🙃 Regular reminder that while Hozier has amazing love songs, he is ALSO very outspoken about his leftist politics, specifically anti-fascism, anti-racism, reproductive rights, Palestinian rights and more.
Take Me To Church and Foreigner’s God are scathing critiques of organized religion, specifically the Catholic Church and the colonization of Ireland.
Moment’s Silence is about oral sex but it’s ALSO about how that specific sexual act is often distorted to a show of power rather than that of love.
Nina Cried Power is an homage to various (mostly Black) civil rights activists from the US and Ireland and a call to follow their path.
Be criticizes anti-migrant policies and Trump and his ilk.
Jackboot Jump is about the global wave of fascism and about protest and resistance.
Swan Upon Leda is about reproductive rights and the violent colonial oppression of Ireland and Palestine.
Eat Your Young is about the ruinous way the 1%/capitalism and arms dealers prioritize short-term profit over everything else to the detriment of the youth/99%
Butchered Tongue is about Irish and other indigenous languages being suppressed and erased by imperial powers.
If any of the above surprised you, please, please delve deeper into Hozier’s music, you’re missing such an important part of his work.

idk where the idea that hymns should be sung solemnly and slowly came from, but someday I want to participate in singing them with others as they should be sung, as the bops and jams they rightfully are

I just realized something kinda annoying about engstars, they let Ra*bits call Nazuna "Ni-chan", but Eichi is referred to as "Brother Eichi" :/ I wish they'd just stick with one rather than make it confusing (especially for people that only have/use the official translation)
Brother eichi sounds like they're in a monastery i'll never get over that. I hear gongs in my head every time i read it. Im sorry to anyone that only uses the official translation though:( for many reasons i wont get into cuz i think i'll sound annoying if i do. Anyway. Rinne and Niki calling Anzu sister is funny tho, i'll give eng that, it adds a vague 2010s american gay layer to their characters that was definitely not intentional but it's there now

life has been crazy and chaotic lately but i’m somehow pushing through. my mental health is in the trash, i’ve tried everything and there’s no change. on the bright side, things at work have been going great. i’m a 911 dispatcher, i’ve been working in this field for nearly 4 years now but the agency that i’m currently with is incredible. i love you guys, i’m so happy to be back 🖤

i know chase obviously wins the religious trauma competition but can we please talk about how foreman was not only raised by a deeply religious father, but was most likely raised BAPTIST. no wonder he’s so repressed. the baptist experience is like. you’re in church every sunday listening to a man scream about how love is something that should hurt. you believe in a good, loving god - but to believe, you have to accept that true love is painful. that to be a good person, you must suffer. to love is to endure it, to work mercilessly. you’re not worthy of the love of The Almighty, and you never will be, and that sense of unworthiness is fundamental to having faith. when you sin, you don’t just hurt Him, you hurt everyone around you. you make the world worse because you have dared commit the sin of existence — to be human is to be sinful. to be loved is to feel unworthy and pathetic and hopeless. like YEAH no wonder foreman self isolates and is emotionally closed off. he was taught from BIRTH that he is fundamentally unworthy of love, and that in accepting love, he is also accepting that he truly is worthless.

what I have learned from Hozier is that, as a lover, I will carry the weight of past relationship trauma for me and my partner, but just don’t expect to do it silently

Serious question:
Is it normal that I want to analyze each and every one of Hozier's songs?
Like, read the lyrics, listen to the song. Analyze each verse, each word. Know the reason and the meaning behind it.
Writing this I just realized that it isn't. Nevermind.
Anyway. I'm going to do it regardless.

i might do a part 2 so please tell me which songs i missed

when hozier said “but still my heart is heavy with the hate of some other man’s beliefs” and when hozier said “and have my foreign ear made fresh again on each unlikely sound” and when hozier said “i’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies” and when hozier said “the problem brought its own solution”

People seem to have taken my 'medieval piety/child faith/stay in ur lane' vibe as an endorsement of the Benedict option and let me stay. Absolutely the fuck not.
I don't actually think monasticism is bad! It is extremely sanctifying for some!!! But the Benedict option as a dogwhistle for retreat from the world into insular communities and radtrad attitudes?? Hate that shit. I am in and, for now, of the world! I live here! Creation is good! No Gnosticism or Manichaenism here!! There is good to do here and now! Not just in some nebulous far off future!
It's ecumenical! It's universal! It's ignoring church politics, not because I'm horrified by the liberalism or w/e (actually be MORE extreme justice&praxis oriented thanks), but because they're exhausting and I'll never be able to change them and while everyone sits and argues about whether or not we ought to be radical, and to what extent, I'm going to go roll up my sleeves and try to BE radical. Dorothy Day 'everyone wants a revolution but no one wants to do the dishes' mentality.
