Worldbuilding Rambling: Von Brauns vs Varaikonnens

I know I've made a lot of mention of the Von Brauns on my blog: Morgan and Jasmine Von Braun have a lot of posted art, I believe, and I've never really elaborated upon what the family does. Figure the best way to do that is to bring in the Varaikonnens, who are the Von Braun family's primary rivals -- or were, before the Von Braun's criminal spine collapsed. The Von Brauns were a family of smugglers and black-market tech creators. The head of the family at the time of its being brought down as an underworld power was Hestia Von Braun, who experimented on her own children, who are -- with two exceptions -- natural shapeshifters. The Von Braun family gained its riches generations ago with Ragnkyndr Von Braun, an elf who found a god's corpse and, as all enterprising folks would, pillaged it for parts. Ragnkyndr managed to create quite the fortune for himself off of the back of the selling of Godsoils and various other black-market goods; he took his gains, and began to field his family as he saw fit. However, over time, due to the cruelty of the family heads towards the children and peripheral members, the Von Brauns began to experience dissent and, worse, runaway connections. Notably, Jack Von Braun fled after being forcibly fused with the corpse of a "godspawn" entity, and before her time, the once-heir Seion Von Braun fled after his wife and children died as a result of his father's testing.

Given the Von Braun products, however, escaping was next to impossible: Jack's flight resulted in one of her exes being given her location, which in turn almost resulted in her murder. Seion was found having been tortured and killed -- notably, the products of the torture were all VB-Brand weapons. The Von Braun family finally collapsed -- and those who wanted to be free of it finally were -- when Hestia Von Braun overestimated the tolerance of a rival. Nobody knows quite what happened; all that is known is that Hestia was found having been ritually killed in the name of the god of storms, Matha Aror. In direct opposition to the Von Brauns were the Varaikonnens. A family headed by Angelique Varaikonnen and her two partners (husband Cignus and wife Kyla) and their numerous children, the Varaikonnens are brutal, ruthless, and unforgiving. They are one of the few openly pious groups in the city; all members of the Varaikonnen family worship Khoval Kor Brukh, a goddess of blood, song, and triumph. Their business? Murder, kidnapping, and all other sorts of abysmal things. Angelique runs the family like a cult. New recruits -- and new spawn -- are broken into the cult mindset. Their loyalty is absolute because it is all they know. In the cases of her children, Angelique has had two of them assassinated when they tried to flee. She's not above having outsiders brought to her and fracturing their minds into being able to serve her, by use of technological implants and curses.

Her oldest daughter, Ange, is rarely seen; there are doubts as to her existence on the outside world. In reality, Ange has been planning a coup against her mother for years. She has grown up in a hellish environment and seeks to break it. To do this, she has enlisted her sisters -- Bayeur and Asteria -- to utilize their own contacts. The purge will be quick and merciless. Ange, of course, will fill the power vacuum when it comes. All of the main Varaikonnen girls are heavily augmented to do their jobs better: Bayeur, for example, has both the flesh-blessing of the family Goddess and augments to her senses to better be able to track enemies by scent and sound alone.

Not that I think losing crime is bad, but it certainly would be interesting to explore the financial consequences to a massive city like Gotham where crime does pay for half or more (of everything) and drives the local economy, as partly illegal shipping for gangsters also moves legal products to buyers. Or that working for mobsters is stable enough to feed families.

As Batman succeeds and dismantles these power structures and pseudo industries, what happens to the city? Is there even a way to disentangle all of it from the corruption that runs it (seen when Jim Gordon has to hire cops investigated by internal affairs because they've all been investigated).

Would Wayne Enterprises just have to fill in all the gaps? WE shipping, catering, et cetera to replace lost jobs and income? Or would Batman have to reckon with the fact that he can't shut down everything? At least not as bluntly as he does.

There are so many reasons that Barba defending Wheatley was a dumb ass choice for the show.

But. One that really, really bugs me is his doing it to protect Olivia. And while it's so paternalistic and annoying it's not what really gets my goat.

No. It's the fact that we're supposed to believe that Rafael Barba did not prepare and plan for the eventuality that a defense attorney would question her credibility waaay back in 2014 when her confession press conference first aired.

Or at least once she was not indicted and was back on the job.

There is NO WAY he did not run thru this possibility with Liv at the time. No way he did not come up with strategies. No way he didn't fucking grill her on handling these questions, getting comfortable with some verbal tap dancing to avoid committing further perjury but not actual admit to the perjury committed at the Lewis trial.

NO WAY he just crossed his fingers that it would never come up during a trial.

Also, we're expected to believe that no defense attorney went after her about this on cross? For what, 8 fucking years? That the first time any of the various defense attorneys brought it up was because...Richard Wheatley was the defendant?

Not any of the high powered or connected defendants that have been tried in the past 8 years? Just an attorney for Wheatley would play that card.
