Note
It could come up to because Dan wants to talk about things that rhyme with his name right? Dan/man. Phil will make a joke about Danscaping and then phanscaping and Dan will be like haha I can't believe I'm buying a house with you.
Stop it...

Sew…. It took me almost two weeks of fiddling to get the foundation fabric of this camping quilt to look reasonably like the photo: darks on the left, lights on the right, and the implication of shrubs using printed fabrics vs fabrics that “read” solid like the grass. Sewing them together was yet another challenge. But in spite of all the curves and angles, only the last piece had to be top-stitched because there were just too many of curves and angles involved. The next step for me is to add dimension and texture which I hope will make the hillside come to life.
A tatted seam treatment
Green tatted chains cover some of the seams. (Please visit The Traveling Tatter for explanations of these tatting terms.) Long picots on these tatted chains represent grass. On other seams, I have couched strands of a furry fiber in variegated shades of green. Crazy Quilt embroidery techniques were used on several other seams.
I have fashioned a shrub with wrapped floral wire and a few beads representing leaves for the main shrub.
The solitary tree is well on its way to completion but I have a little more fussing to do with it. I have added medium sized branches to the tree by attaching short lengths of wrapped floral wire to the fabric-based trunk. The finer branches and the bird will be added via thread painting towards the completion of the quilt.
Silk Ribbon Embroidery and Pinching
Contrary to my previous statement that only the tree and one bush will have dimension, I have decided to add a few dimensional bushes. I have embellished some with French Knots and others with silk ribbon embroidery. Others have been done with “Fabric Manipulation”, such as pleating and a very rudimentary smocking technique.
Textured Fabric
Very Basic Smocking
Smocking and Pleating
Texturing tool, costs about $10
In an effort to make the “shrubbery” 3-dimensional, I tried using Texture Magic, which shrinks 30% in all directions with applied heat. It worked as described but I was unable to get the effect I wanted. I resorted to making tiny pleats in the fabric, which did result in a textured piece of fabric that might pass as a shrub. Since this was essentially a bust, I’ve decided to use one of the more traditional forms of fabric manipulation.
“Fabric Manipulation” is any technique that reshapes the surface of a fabric. Pleating, couching, beading, and cutwork are just a few of the possible techniques.  These are relatively new to the quilting world but fashion designers have been manipulating fabric for decades. I have added a few shrubs using some of these techniques for interest but the scene was originally a somber one so there won’t be anything fancy or sparkly like beads or sequins.
For the sky, I found the greatest fabric online at Thousands of Bolts.com. Even though it
The sky really makes this quilt!
isn’t, having the sky in place makes the quilt look finished to me. I think the sky is perfect and I’ll most likely be ordering more of this fabric from Danscapes by RJR, Pattern: 7500 Color: 23. It is a marvelous border print with varying shades and amounts of gray mixed with white. Sections along the fold are almost a solid gray, whereas this section was along one salvage of the cloth. Danscapes has several colors and scenes available in the line. Doesn’t it just make the whole scene?
I have one more large area to add an extra layer of batting, a few more seams to finish off and then the final quilting and binding. Once these are done, I’ll add the tree and primary shrub. These will be covered in Camping Quilt; Part III next week. In that post, I will also give a brief tutorial on piecing curves, which I learned to do from a YouTube video. It’s really simple once you learn the tricks! Follow my blog and see how my first camping quilt turns out!
Writing the story of my life must include quilting about the difficult times, as well…
