In un celebre passo dell'𝑂𝑟𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑜 𝐹𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑠𝑜 - il duello tra Orlando e Cimosco - Ludovico Ariosto descrive un tentativo di imboscata del secondo, armato di un'arcaica arma da fuoco, ai danni del primo. L'appostamento di Cimosco è paragonato a quello di un cacciatore, che attende il cinghiale con l'arma e "cani armati" (XII, 73).

Era consuetudine all'epoca provvedere alla difesa dei cani da caccia, in genere con strutture difensive in tessuto (fig. in alto a destra: due esempli in lino seicenteschi, Veste Coburg). A questi andava l'ingrato compito di "accompagnare alla morte" il cinghiale, in genere già ferito dal cacciatore con uno spiedo.

Seppur rari, esistono pure alcuni esemplari di armature canine in piastre di ferro. L'esemplare più famoso è conservato nell'Armeria Reale di Madrid (inv. 254235) e appartenne all'imperatore Carlo V. E' stata realizzata da Desiderius Helmschmid di Augusta intorno al 1540 e presenta, incisa all'acquaforte, l'immagine di un cacciatore che infilza un cinghiale con uno spiedo.

In a famous passage from the 𝐹𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑠𝑜 - the duel between Orlando and Cimosco - Ludovico Ariosto describes an ambush attempt: Cimosco, armed with an archaic firearm, tries to surprise and kill Orlando. The ambush of Cimosco is compared to the ambush of a hunter, who awaits the wild boar with the weapon and "armoured dogs" (XII, 73).

It was customary at the time to provide for the defense of hunting dogs, generally with defensive structures in fabric (fig. above right: two examples in linen, 17th centuruy, Veste Coburg). The dogs had to "accompany to death" the wild boar, usually already wounded by the hunter.

Although rare, there are also some examples of canine armor in iron plates. The most famous specimen is housed in the Real Armeria of Madrid (inv. 254235) and belonged to the Emperor Charles V. It was made by Desiderius Helmschmid of Ausburg around 1540 and has etched a hunter spearing a wild boar with a spear.

The difference 😭

So for context, I think we all know by now about Howard Da Silva and his temper issues behind the scenes, how he would scream at everybody nearly every day. He was supposed to DIRECT 1776, but then Hunt was brought in and Da Silva didn’t like that. Bill Daniels was pretty much the only one who could calm him down and was fine with him because they had worked together before 1776 and they were friends. But no one else was his friend until Betty Buckley got him to open up but that’s a whole different story.

So the photo on the left is David Ford and Bill Daniels, and they both seem happy and in a good mood judging by their smirking. And on the right is Howard Da Silva and David Ford and David does not look very thrilled to be next to him. He looks almost sad I guess and maybe a little anxious incase Howard decides to blow up or something.

I don’t think for these particular photos, anyone was in character because if you know the show you know that No one is smiling during the process of signing the declaration. So in the photo of the left, I think they’re joking around or something and in the photo on the right, David Ford is afraid to say anything incase Da Silva starts lunging at him or something. It’s really sad that whole situation. But thankfully Da Silva changed and he was a trooper for the most part during the filming of the movie.

I should also mention that during out of town in Washington DC, Da Silva’s big song “Increase and Multiply” was cut, and he was FURIOUS, so he quit the show temporarily and they brought in Rex Everhart, who was a huge help and would end up being with the show for years. Obviously we all know that he had to take over for Da Silva for the first months on broadway because of his heart attack. So thank goodness they got him during DC.

But it’s clear by these two photos that David Ford wasn’t happy with Da Silva at first. I don’t blame him.

I wasn't sure if I should do this chronologically, or in order of how much I've simped for these people, so let's just get to it:

P.S.: you'll get kudos (and maybe candy) if you pick up on the common themes here.

1. Zuko - ATLA

He was my first fictional crush.

I would write self insert fic about him (which never saw the light of AO3 thankfully), and I would rewatch all of ATLA just to his character go from "I can fix him" brat to adorkable edgy brat.

2. Bill Cipher - Gravity Falls

He had what I at the time called the "sexy British accent". I never even joined the school of thought "he'd burn the whole world down but me". I was chill with burning.

3. Bucky Barnes - MCU

And the bad boy parade continues. I firmly believed that I could fix him, and going back to the (once again thankfully unpublished) self insert slash fics of the time, I realise that I had no idea what in him needed fixing.

4. John Hancock - Fallout 4

Nothing makes me fall harder for a sad meow meow than him going "I'm gonna stop bugging you with my problems, I know I'm too fucked up to love".

I have a save file right before that convo, and I like to revisit it every so often.

5. Egor Serling - Deathloop

While on the topic of sad meow meows, let me introduce you to mister "I've been invisible my whole life 🥺". He's pathetic and slightly unhinged, what is there not to love? ( y/n in my fic about him agrees).

6. David Sarif - Deus Ex

It's hard to pick only one character from the DX games, but I think "Daddy Sarif", as I affectionately call him whenever he's brought up in conversation, belongs here.

He is rich, smart, and believes the illuminati want to tear down his company (and has 0 evidence to back that up).

7. Crosshair - Clone Wars: the Bad Batch

A sad meow meow, a bad boy, and white hair? Can a man be more perfect? Well he's also a sniper ...

He's like Egor, but he'll talk back when you tell him to get on his knees, you know?

8. Billie Lurk - Dishonored

You know the jist by this point, sad, with questionable morals, daddy issues, and missing an arm.

My favourite thing about her is how she goes "this is a robbery" with an audible smirk, as she robs a bank. And also that she kept the creepy art project her girlfriend gave her a decade ago. How sweet is that?

I need to write a self-insert x her fic. But I don't have any Dishonored OCs :/

9. Alyx Vance - Half Life

She was my first girl crush. And I still remember the exact moment I went "damn that chick is cool". It was shortly after reuniting with Barney, when I had to shoot my way through some stupid combine stronghold, and Alyx just crawled through the vents and waited for me on the other side.

(She is the reason I have £500 saved to one day buy a VR set)

10. Bo-Katan Kryze - the Mandalorian (no this isn't cheating, it's a different sub-fandom XP)

Is she just a mommy version of Alyx? Maybe. But the Mandalorian (the TV series), sure helped with the popularity of her character... (I'm talking about that one ass scene).

She also has that sad kitty side to her, when she sits alone in her massive space castle after all her friends have left her.
