Canada’s first subway opened along Yonge, running 4.6 miles from Union to Eglinton in 1954.
The first stretch of the Yonge Street line took four years to build and was designed to move a peak load of 40,000 people per hour in the downtown core. It opened in 1954.

Stanley Turner (Canadian, 1883–1953) - A War Record
The setting is the intersection of Davisville Avenue and Yonge Street in Toronto, outside the Orthopaedic Military Hospital, which had 180 beds and an artificial limb factory. The graffiti "Wizz-Bang Corner," derived from the name for small caliber enemy shells during the war, may indicate a common gathering spot for veterans to meet, rest, or beg. "Fragments From France," in small lettering above the bench, refers to a publication by famous British cartoonist Bruce Bairnsfather. It also betrays a dark sense of humour, as the veterans pictured here include permanently wounded soldiers, one of them an amputee.
Wounded First World War veterans sit outside the Orthopaedic Military Hospital and artificial limb factory in Toronto. Some veterans informally called the intersection of Davisville Avenue and Yonge Street, “Whizz-Bang Corner,” after a similarly-named spot on the Western Front. The streets of Toronto were not nearly as dangerous, but veterans had new challenges to face as they reintegrated into postwar society. (source)
The Felicity Ace was a 200 m roll-on/roll-off car carrier. On February 10, 2022, she left Emden, Germany for Davisville, Rhode Island, USA, with a cargo of almost 4000 cars of various Volkswagen Group brands, including luxury brands like Porsche, Bentley, and Lamborghini. Six days later, on February 16, a fire started while the Felicity Ace was about 200 nautical miles from the Azores. The 22 crew members were evacuated by the Portuguese navy, leaving the Felicity Ace adrift on fire.
On February 25, the Portuguese navy reported that the fire had gone out and that the Felicity Ace was being towed to a "safe area" off the Azores. However, on March 1, the Felicity Ace capsized and sank in waters some 3000 m deep.
No crew members were injured during the incident. The cause of the fire remains unknown. The cars onboard were estimated to be worth more than $400 million.

Some friends and railroaders gathered in the pouring rain for a little private photo charter on Rhode Island's own little railroad, the Seaview Transportation Company. The little Seaview Transportation Company doesn't have much in the way of scenery or geographic features along its 7 miles of 'mainline' across the Quonset Business Park on the east shore of Narragansett Bay. About the only spot of note is this deep cut through Devil's Foot Rock just west of the US Route 1 overpass at about MP 1.5 where the two legs of the railroad split to the waterfront in Quonset and Davisville respectively. The road's primary locomotive had been hand washed only a few days prior by the road's new VP (and me!) and hasn't looked this good in years. The rain really saturated the fall leaves and the vibrant blue making for a better scene than we expected. SVTX GP10 1855 was built as a GP9 in Aug. 1956 for the Baltimore and Ohio as their #6467. Later rebuilt by ICG's Paducah Shop she bounced around on different shortlines until coming to Rhode Island in 2006 where she was given this snappy paint job.
