Today's Problematic Ship is the Satoshi

The Satoshi was a cruise ship owned by Ocean Builders, a company dedicated to "seasteading," an attempt to create a seabourne community free of laws imposed on dry land, with strong ties to the cryptocurrency movement.

The 1991-built ship, originally named Regal Princess but renamed Pacific Dawn in 2007, was purchased by Ocean Builders in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. The idea was to permanently anchor the ship in Panamian waters, as the central hub of an eventual community of "SeaPods", essentially individual houses at sea, which would be arranged around the Satoshi in the form of a Bitcoin B.

It quickly became evident that the people running Ocean Builders had no understanding of how to operate a ship: they initially failed to ensure their ship had certificate of seaworthiness to allow it to sail to Panama (where the venture was to be based), and even after this no-one was willing to insure the ship, making it impossible for passengers to live onboard. They also planned to re-engine the ship while it was out at sea, a physically impossible task to accomplish without sinking the ship in the process.

The leadership of Ocean Builders blamed all this on shipping being "plagued by over-regulation." (Many of our entries here at Today's Problematic Ship demonstrate those regulations exist for a reason). The end result was predictable: by the time the Satoshi arrived in Panama it had been sold to an Indian shipbreaker.

Except Ocean Builders had signed a contract they could not honour: according to the Basel Convention, which covers the disposal of hazardous waste, they weren’t allowed to send the ship from a signatory country (Panama) to a non-signatory country (India). Thus the sale was cancelled, and subsequently the ship was arrested by Panamian authorities.

Eventually, the Satoshi was sold in 2021 a different startup company, Ambassador Cruise Line. The new venture, who actually knew how to operate a cruise ship, started successful operations with the former Satoshi, now renamed Ambience, in 2022.

This is problematic in-canon, and is explicitly addressed as problematic in-canon by a character or narrator.

This is problematic in-canon, but it isn't directly called out. Characters still directly experience negative concequences as a result, but the author expects you to do the math.

There is evidence that this is problematic in-canon, but nothing bad ever comes of it. This could be because the author doesn't realize the implications, or simply doesn't want to go there.

The problematic subtext is there, but not everyone is looking for it or cares about it.

This ship COULD be read as problematic, but it could also be read as perfectly normal. It's ambiguous.

This would be horrible in-real life, but relationships of this nature frequently go unaddressed in canon, so it's very likely it wouldn't be seen as such in-universe.

This is problematic, but due to the canonical setting, most relationships are. (picture the lack of female agency in historical fiction.) And it frustrates me that these are all considered the same amount of bad. Stop lumping things under "icky" and have an honest talk with how the subject-matter is portrayed. But you won't, because you have no media analysis skills, and make it everyone's problem.

this ship deserves more tbh. They don’t even have a little nickname or anything that separates them from mcu or itsv so they don’t get confused with peter b parker and tom hollands peter parker (despite the facial similarites the games are not part of the mcu so its not the same peter) or vice versa with miles morales from itsv. (Yet)

Today's Problematic Shipping trend is the drought affecting the Panama Canal

The Panama Canal is a series of locks, artificial waterways, and lakes connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans across the Isthmus of Panama. Allowing ships to avoid sailing around South America, it is one of the most important shipping lanes in the world. Some 40% of the world's cargo traffic passes through the Panama Canal.

The Panama Canal is above sea level and is fed by rainwater. Additionally, operating the locks to raise and lower ships drains large amounts of fresh water from the canal into the ocean, on the order of several hundred thousand cubic metres per ship.

Due to a severe drought in Panama water levels in the canal are unusually low. This has reduced the number of ships passing through the canal. Furthermore, ships have had to carry as much as 40% less cargo to sit high enough in the water. Some ships have arrived too heavy and had to divert around South America.

Droughts like this are expected to become more common in the future as the climate changes and becomes hotter. Ricaurte Vasquez Morales, the canal's administrator, told CBS News "We are climate dependent so this issue of climate change to us is real."

💄 TODAY'S PROBLEMATIC SHIP 🐞

AbbaGio is a ship that I adore endlessly, and for good reason. It has the perfect concoction of some of my favourite tropes for a good, problematic ship. Such tropes include:

Age Gap (15 x 20)

Power Imbalance

Threats and Intimidation galore

From the moment they're on screen together, there's instant tension. Immediately, Abbacchio isn't taking kindly to a new addition to their little group, and sets about hazing and harassing said new addition... to no avail. This sets off a series of increasingly homoerotic moments of Abbacchio trying to physically intimidate Giorno (and or threaten him with words) to put him in his place.

Giorno, however, does not cave in so easily and continues to outdo Abbacchio and not be deterred by his threats. The seething hate Abbacchio has for Giorno is such a draw, the way he's so angrily obsessed with keeping Giorno a peg below him.

It makes you wonder why this 20 year old mafioso is so obsessed with teaching a 15 year old boy these kinds of lessons, or why his first thought upon seeing Giorno... was to haze him with piss drinking. Let me remind you, that trick Giorno pulled didn't absorb all of Abbacchio's 'tea'. Some of that still got swallowed, keep in mind.

There's a lot of rivals (?) to lovers potential, a lot of unresolved tension and biting sexual tension. Perhaps in future, Don Giono ends up trying to bond with his dear underling Abbacchio... or up and coming Gang-Star Giorno is merely trying to get closer to Abbacchio and ease the tension, but little does he know, he's making it far worse...

The juxtaposition between Giorno's cool, calm and cunning persona and Abbacchio's aggressive, intimidating and yet capable persona... it's too good not to think about.

aight just bc i saw a certain artist again i must rant about this herobrine x null/entity 303 and null x 303 are problematic ships first of all, 303 and null would canonically try murdering herobrine (and 303 HAS DONE SO in his creepypasta, evidence below)

and i DOUBT null would like herobrine because, like 303, null is evil and herobrine was trying to warn the protagonist about null, like how in 303's creepypasta herobrine was trying to warn players about him (evidence below)

as for null x 303, that is also highly unlikely since they'd probably be enemies, acquaintances at most and even then they'd try killing each other at least one a day

every time i see a ship relating to them (especially considering i have a 303 alter) makes me feel extreme discomfort

I dunno, maybe Im just old school or what, but if I dislike something, especially if it involves media like movies, genres, or ships... I just don't look at it. Worst case scenario, I mute the hashtag or block fan accounts if it's unavoidable.

However for many people, not only do they dislike something, they actively seek out said media, post their dislike in the "we like this media" section, find specific fans of the media, go to their accounts, post anons about how they're insane/horrible people for liking said media, argue with people in comment sections about their dislike for said media, and hang out with other people who hate said media in Discords, actively planning hate bombing campaigns like a supervillain league?
