Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus)

These shrooms are one of my favorites to forage and eat. They are delicious and can be cooked in several different ways.

These shrooms aren't just yummy. They are CARNIVORES. Oyster mushrooms prey on nematodes by releasing a toxin that paralyzes and causes necrosis in their tiny victims. The nematodes are eventually reduced to a sludge that is easily digested by the oyster mushrooms.

The newly found ability of Amanita phalloides to reproduce asexually means that it can spread faster than before. There aren't as many invasive fungi as there are invasive plants in North America, but this definitely counts as one of them.

One of the things I emphasize multiple times in my foraging classes is that you should never, ever eat something unless you are 100% positive it is an edible species. Many of the poisonings from this species are from folks who grew up eating paddy straw mushrooms (Volvariella volvacea) in Asia, visited or moved to Europe or North America, and mistook A. phalloides for these edibles. And it's important to do your own identifying rather than relying on someone else; there are multiple cases of mushroom poisonings where someone was given the mushrooms by someone else who said they were edible.

When in doubt, throw it out! It is totally okay to want to be an old, rather than bold, mushroom hunter.

I'd like to learn how to identify edible-vs- toxic mushrooms...

I believe, it's a skill acquired with time. You can use the internet, books, apps, the knowledge of other people to learn mushrooms.

There are thousands of mushroom species, so, I think, first you have to learn your local edible mushrooms. Whenever you're not sure what it is, even with slightest doubt - do not take it.

Probably, one the best and most nutritious of edible mushrooms are boletes. There are many species and subspecies of these guys (boletus, leccinum, suillus, xerocomus), most of them are edible.

(Boletus radicans, Boletus calopus, Tylopilus felleus are bitter. Porphyrellus porphyrosporus, Strobilomyces strobilaceus are also inedible. Boletus satanas is toxic.)

Then there are chanterelles:

Honey fungi:

A lot of russula species are edible but they're not too nutritious and some of them can make you sick.

Lactarius sp. are edible, too, but then again woolly milkcap can be slightly toxic, if not prepared properly. Some of lactarius mushrooms are said to have carcinogens in them.

In the end, you have to study the mushrooms. Read about them, look at the photos and videos from every possible angle, learn about the stipe, the gills, the pores, the color, the smell. Don't go mushroom hunting alone, if you have no previous experience whatsoever.

freaking people out when theyre on drugs as a meme on the internet is funny but lately its been becoming a little too prevalent to the point where im starting to get concerned?? i think this needs to be said, please dont do that in real life to a person who is literally tripping. its really not anything to joke about in a real life situation, you can fuck someone up really badly from scaring someone whos high on psychedelics especially. its one of the easiest ways to trigger long-time psychosis, not to mention said person losing their trust for you, and no one deserves any of that.

out of chara , so like i know for the past three years my life has hit a really big blow .  with my pop's cancer diagnosis and subsequent passing in 2020 and then working in the literal ass pit of hell ,  like my mental health has not been on the up and up .  it's gotten slightly better because i'm not working five days in a row ,  but still ?  i have a lot of trauma to work through and my healing journey is filled with reliving things and opening old wounds that i don't usually talk about .  my anti - depressant also isn't working as it usually did so it's been tough  (  and i'm not about trying to find something else ...  i just can't go through all that process again lmao .  ) 

however i'm lucky enough to actually start micro - dosing psilocybin  (  shrooms if you don't know lol  )  in the immediate future .  i'll be going through a whole process with a licensed person and everything ,  only because i've personally never done shooms before ?  so i'd like to take the safest route ,  and yeah ...  hopefully micro - dosing will be able to give me the support i need on my healing journey and maybe even help be creatively and all that .  i'm nervous but excited ,  i'm hoping so hard that this will work because i hate feeling the way i feel and i want to be at peace and happy with things .

Ramaria vinosimaculans- an edible coral fungus that stains reddish brown when touched or handled. These cool looking fungi are found in the PNW during fall.

While this species of ramaria is known in North America as edible, many cultures do not distingush ramaria species from each other. They consider all ramaria species to be edible.

Ramaria can cause mild gastric distress in some people. I've tried this species a couple of times and didn't have any reaction.
