hello I just saw your tma AU for mdzs and I gotta say it’s the best fucking thing I’ve seen in ages. I love it so much, the character design lives rent free in my head. Absolutely impeccable. Please give the juniors shitty merch for their YouTube channel.
I did one, then i did two and then i did several. You opened the door for the eldritch beings to whisper sweet nothings in my ear and compel me to spend the whole day on these. Hope you're happy with what you have unleashed upon the world. (but seriously, these were so fun to make i could not stop)
I like to think Lan Jingyi would've been in charge of designing the merch, with some helpful suggestions here and there and our boy did not disappoint, although Jin Ling would like to disagree (except for the fairy merch, which is perfect no flaws).

Hello! Sorry if this is an unconventional ask, but I really want to find an art work/blog in the mdzs fandom. All I really remember is that it had a lot of art, and it featured semi-realistic pencil sketches of the characters. Not the types where there's a single page portrait, but more like a pages with a bunch of sketches each. I remember seeing a Jingyi sketch and a WWX sketch at the least. The faces were not anime, but more like a slightly simplified rendering of The Untamed actors.
Thank you guys! None of these were the one I was thinking of, but I appreciate the help! @fael-draws comes close to the style, but I remember it being on traditional sketchbook pages rather than scanned digital ones. The style favors clean lines over soft rendering.
basically, I'd use this as an example (sorry, it's pinterest) except with more Asian looking features
...
I FOUND IT OMGGGGGG
it was extraterezi's art
Honestly, I can think of multiple blogs like this 😅 Does anyone here know which blog they might be talking about?

aliasblack73 said: @littlesmartart does a lot of great sketches. Scrolling through my archive I found this one
eldritch-bisexual said: @the-pudding-is-a-lie is the one that comes to mind
ereshai said: No idea who the artist might be, but @mdzsartreblogs might have reblogged them. There are all kinds of categorization tags, including Media Types and Work Formats, which might help narrow down the search

Trick or treat!
Happy Halloween! ^_^ You get a snippet from one of the fics I'm working on right now!
Once he was off the country roads and could get a signal again, Xichen called Sizhui to let him know, "I'm bringing a guest back with me." He could very nearly hear Sizhui blinking. "From Carp Manor? Is Ms. Jiang visiting? I can make up the guest room on the ground floor so she doesn't need to manage the stairs, if that'd help." "Not Ms. Jiang, no, although that's a very thoughtful offer. I, ah." Xichen paused, trying to figure out how to phrase his request, while in the passenger's seat next to him Meng Yao's eyes watched with some interest. The rest of him was mostly a vaguely humanoid cloud, which he'd said was the easiest visible state for him. "I need you and Jingyi to take down the spirit exclusion wards. We'll put them back up when I arrive, but I'll need to add in some exceptions." More audible blinking before Sizhui replied. "You're…bringing home a ghost, aren't you." "Very perceptive of you, Sizhui." "Thank you, bobo, but I wouldn't really say so? It's just sort of the fashionable thing now, all of the best exorcists are friends with ghosts. Or. Whatever Mr. Wei is." "I think he's currently insisting on 'eldritch horror.' In any case, please take down the wards, I'll introduce you when we arrive."

Untamed Winter Fest Day 26
Surprise
Another Eldritch!Lan AU, following directly after Anticipation (Untamed Winter Fest Day 24) and features more found family (Xicheng+Jingyi) than any pairings.
“Jingyi?“ Jiang Cheng calls out as he walks into Lan Jingyi’s room.
Jiang Cheng and Lan Xichen had a very, very long talk about Lan Xichen’s otherness and now Jiang Cheng wants to tell Lan Jingyi hat he knows about them, and whenever Lan Jingyi is at Lotus Pier, he’s free to be who he really is there as well.
He would never admit it out loud, but he took quite the liking to Lan Jingyi and his loud mouth and his unapologetic behaviour. He knows he favours him amongst the disciples that are not Jin Ling, but Jiang Cheng can’t and won’t change that.
And Jiang Cheng wants him to know that he accepts Lan Jingyi completely.
Except, when he enters the room he’s met with a form so completely different from Lan Xichen’s that he stops dead in his tracks.
“What the fuck!” he yells out and stumbles back, because those sure are a lot of jaws on one relatively small form and he isn’t sure just how friendly it is.
Very friendly, he realizes, when the form compresses into the familiar shape of Lan Jingyi.
“Sandu Shengshou,” Lan Jingyi whispers, voice small and he hunches in on himself, takes a few steps back from Jiang Cheng.
“Holy ancestors, is that what you look like?” Jiang Cheng blurts out because Lan Xichen did not mention that they didn’t all look the same.
“I’m sorry,” Lan Jingyi says and makes himself even smaller. “I’m not dangerous, I promise, Sandu Shengshou, please don’t think of me as a threat.”
“What did I say about using that title?” Jiang Cheng wants to know on autopilot and he finally shakes the surprise off.
“To not use it,” Lan Jingyi mumbles and then bows towards Jiang Cheng. “This disciple apologizes.”
Jiang Cheng shudders with the formality in this words and he swiftly walks forward, intends to bring Lan Jingyi out of the bow, but Lan Jingyi scrambles back, presses against the wall and won’t meet Jiang Cheng’s eyes.
“I never hurt anyone,” he rushes out and Jiang Cheng stops in his tracks.
“What do you think I’m going to do, Jingyi?” he asks carefully as he takes a step away from Lan Jingyi.
“I don’t know,” Lan Jingyi whispers, and he wrings his hands in front of his chest.
“I know that none of you Lan’s are humans,” Jiang Cheng tells him. “Xichen told me, a week ago.”
“Oh,” Lan Jingyi breathes out, but he doesn’t relax. “I’m sorry you had to find out about my form this way,” he then tacks on.
“It would have been nice to know that not all of you look like Xichen, that was quite the surprise,” Jiang Cheng admits, because he expected all of them to look like Lan Xichen.
Especially since Lan Xichen never mentioned any other forms.
Jiang Cheng hopes Lan Jingyi will relax now, but he doesn’t.
“Jingyi,” he says and Lan Jingyi jerks under his voice. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s just me,” he mumbles, so lowly that Jiang Cheng can barely hear him.
“It’s just you what?” he asks for clarification.
“It’s just me who is different,” Lan Jingyi says and Jiang Cheng is horrified to hear how choked up he sounds. “Just me who won’t fit. I’m sorry you had to see, I’ll make sure it won’t happen anymore.”
“Jingyi,” Jiang Cheng softly says and carefully walks closer until he can put his hand on Lan Jingyi’s shoulder, who is shaking under his hand.
“I was just surprised. Xichen didn’t mention other forms, and I got used to his eyes already. It was a surprise,” he reiterates, but he can tell that Lan Jingyi isn’t reassured.
He decides to just fuck it and pulls Lan Jingyi into a hug. The boy is shaking in his arms and Jiang Cheng just holds him tighter.
“Of course you would be special in both your forms,” Jiang Cheng whispers and he must have said the right thing, because Lan Jingyi clings to him.
“You’re not disgusted?” he asks, voice horribly wobbly, and Jiang Cheng pushes him away to look him in the eyes.
“I am not disgusted,” he seriously tells him. “It was a surprise, and I’m sorry that I reacted badly.”
“I’m sorry you had to see,” Lan Jingyi mumbles but Jiang Cheng shakes his head.
“No, I’m not. I want to know these things. I want to know you,” he tells him and it seems that slowly, Lan Jingyi starts to believe him. “I came here to tell you not to hide at Lotus Pier. If you are with me or Xichen, you can take your form.”
“Even though I’m so different?” Lan Jingyi wants to know and Jiang Cheng sighs.
“Especially because you are different,” he says. “You’re not human. You shouldn’t have pretend to be one.”
“But I’m not like them, either,” Lan Jingyi mumbles and Jiang Cheng wonders if he needs to have words with Lan Qiren, or gods forbid, even Lan Xichen.
He will if they made Lan Jingyi think he’s worth less for being different.
“And I am not like you,” Jiang Cheng says, though he’s aware that it’s a poor comparison. “I’m not like Wei Wuxian or Lan Sizhui or even anyone else at Lotus Pier, either. No two humans are the same, and it would surprise me if two of your kind were the same.”
Lan Jingyi is quiet for a long moment and Jiang Cheng lets him think.
“None of them has mouths like I do,” he eventually brings out and Jiang Cheng rolls his eyes at that.
“Well, their loss if they can’t eat,” he gives back and it startles a laugh out of Lan Jingyi.
Though it does make Jiang Cheng curious.
“Is that why you always eat so much?” he wants to know and is horrified to see that Lan Jingyi shrinks in on himself again.
“I’m sorry, I don’t mean to eat so much, I know I take more than the normal ration, I’m sorry.”
Jiang Cheng takes a few deep breaths, wonders again just who here he needs to beat up for making Lan Jingyi think like this, before he pushes it all away for a later time.
“Jingyi, you should always eat as much as you need. Do we not give you enough? You have to let me know so I can make sure you get enough food until you’re no longer hungry.”
“I wouldn’t want to impose,” Lan Jingyi brings out.
“Family can’t impose,” Jiang Cheng blurts out and only realizes what he has said when Lan Jingyi turns wide eyes on him.
“What?” he breathlessly asks and Jiang Cheng decides to just fuck it.
He can’t take it back, won’t take it back and make Lan Jingyi think that he didn’t mean it. He can deal with a little bit of embarrassment. Lan Jingyi shouldn’t have to deal with a lie.
“I said, family can’t impose.”
“But I’m not,” Lan Jingyi says with a frown. “I’m not family.”
“Aren’t you?” Jiang Cheng asks. “You are aware that Xichen sees you as his adopted son, right?” Jiang Cheng asks. “And I’m sorry I’m not so good with showing emotions, but I do consider you family.”
“It always felt like you singled me out,” Lan Jingyi admits and Jiang Cheng sighs.
“I’m sorry about that, but you’re the only Lan disciple I actually more than care for,” he says and then curses his inability to just tell the boy he loves him.
He has the same problem with Jin Ling.
“I didn’t know that,” Lan Jingyi says with a happy blush and Jiang Cheng vows to do better from now on.
“You do now, so no more pretending, okay? If you need something at Lotus Pier you just ask.”
“Alright,” Lan Jingyi agrees and then darts in for a hug again. “Thank you for not hating me,” Lan Jingyi whispers and Jiang Cheng returns the hug.
“Who do I have to fight for making you think that? Do I have to fight my own cultivation partner?” he wants to know, but before he can answer, said partner storms into the room.
“Jiang Cheng, I forgot to say—,” Lan Xichen starts, but he trails off when he sees Jiang Cheng and Lan Jingyi in a hug.
“That he’s special in every way?” Jiang Cheng wants to know. “Yeah, I already figured that one out myself.”
“I can see that,” Lan Xichen says and then eyes the hand Jiang Cheng still has on Lan Jingyi’s shoulder, even after they part. “And I can also see that you don’t mind,” he says with a small smile and something in Jiang Cheng relaxes.
“So I don’t have to fight you?” he asks and while Lan Xichen stares at him in confusion, Lan Jingyi laughs.
“No, you don’t have to fight him,” he tells them. “Zewu-Jun is the only one who was never put off by my form.”
“What did I say about the title?” Lan Xichen asks and Jiang Cheng laughs at the déjà vu that sentence brings on.
“To not use it,” Lan Jingyi mumbles and then takes a step closer to Jiang Cheng before he carefully asks: “Do you really consider me to be your adopted son?”
He’s nervous, they can both tell, and Lan Xichen and Jiang Cheng share a look in the silence that question leaves behind, until Lan Xichen walks forwards and takes Lan Jingyi’s hands in his.
“I’m sorry I never told you, but I do.”
Orphans are typically raised by the sect as a whole, and it’s not unusual to not have adopted parents. Wei Wuxian was different, because he didn’t have a sect, but Lan Jingyi does. So of course he wouldn’t have assumed anything.
Instead of an answer Lan Jingyi throws his arms around Lan Xichen’s neck, who promptly slings his arms around Lan Jingyi as well.
Lan Xichen and Jiang Cheng share another look, before Lan Xichen smirks at him. Before Jiang Cheng can take a wary step back, Lan Xichen already pulled him into the hug as well.
Lan Jingyi makes a little sound of surprise, but he doesn’t complain, and really, there are worse fates than hugging the man Jiang Cheng loves and the kid he sees as family as well.

im absolutely tickled by the fact that between wwx and lwj, wwx is the team mom. like yes he loves teaching the little juniors their lessons and is stereotypically the more physically affectionate one but also the fact that these poor juniors have a fucking feral gremlin man who loves digging graves and dead bodies as their team mom is very funny and good

@lanzhanshands and I were having a conversation about LXC being everyone’s emergency contact and --
Jiang Cheng could understand Lan Jingyi. Not, like, in general-- kid talked up a storm and, as far as Jiang Cheng could tell, had never followed through on a thought in his life-- but he could understand why he'd put down his...uncle? How were the two of them related? Anyway, why he'd put Lan Xichen down as his emergency contact, while his parents were off on sabbatical. (Jiang Cheng was sure he'd heard that, somewhere. He'd never actually met Lan Jingyi's parents, come to think of it. Not that he needed to meet everyone, but….well, the world of modern cultivation tended to be fairly small, by necessity.) (Maybe he should look into that.) He could even understand Lan Sizhui-- his fathers were both terrible at picking up their phones, and tended towards the type of work besides that put them in deep secret locations with poor cell service and difficulty leaving in a hurry. A little unconventional, maybe, but hey, Jiang Cheng had had enough experience with the ways the conventional fell short of the necessary mark. What he didn't get was why-- "WEI YING! What the FUCK!"
"Ah! A-Cheng!" His brother had the grace to look guilty, at least-- unless that was just the pallor from the bloodloss. "What are you doing here?" "I'm dropping Jin Ling off, because his friends," Jiang Cheng said, stalking forward, "got sent to the ER, and I think now I have a good idea how."
"This one wasn't my idea!" Wei Ying held up his hands, pleading. His right arm was in a cast. Wei Ying saw Jiang Cheng glaring at it and hid it quickly under the scratchy-looking hospital sheet. "Ask them! I'm innocent!" "Sir, please stay still," said the nurse, attempting to fasten a blood pressure cuff around Wei Ying's flailing, un-broken arm. The man's name tag said his name was Wen Ning; the circles under his eyes said he'd been on shift for too many hours. Poor guy looked dead. How could he be sure he was doing things correctly, then? Jiang Chang eyed him suspiciously. "You could handcuff me to the bed," Wei Ying suggested cheerfully. The nurse paused, blinked slowly, and then resumed attempting to fasten the velcro cuff. Jiang Cheng opened his mouth to yell at his brother, because you shouldn't flirt with people at their jobs, and besides he had a husband, and-- and that was the whole point! "Why is he your emergency contact, and not the one you're married to?" Jiang Cheng said, waving a hand towards Lan Xichen. The man was standing at the end of Lan Sizuhi's bed, speaking with an intern with a clipboard. He was as serene and well-put-together as ever. Every time they were in the same room Jiang Cheng was painfully aware of how his hair never lay down flat, and his shirts always seemed to come untucked in the back. "Lan Zhan worries so much," Wei Ying said, pulling a face so sappy Jiang Cheng wanted to punch it off. Except there was a lot of bruising there already, kind of an alarming overripe fruit color, and couldn't he stay out of trouble for one week, one fucking week while Jiang Cheng tried to keep the sect from curdling around their ears? The nurse had progressed to tucking his stethoscope under the cuff and listening to his pulse, which greatly restricted the breadth of Wei Ying's gestures. Something in Jiang Cheng's chest squeezed, so tight it hurt. "And he gets all frowny, and I like it when he's frowny but not at me--" "THAT'S NOT A GOOD ENOUGH--" "Shhhh, no yelling," said Lan Jingyi from the next bed. He flapped his hands from beneath the tangle of arms caging him in. Jin Ling and that Ouyang kid seemed to have performed some eldritch summoning charm to allow them to stretch across the beds of both of their friends at the same time. The Ouyang kid had also procured handmade cards, which was impressive considering how little lead time he must've had. (Not that Jin Ling had told Jiang Cheng that he'd be picking up Ouyang Zizhen as well as him, on this one-of-too-many-before-it hospital trip. Because Jiang Cheng was apparently a chauffeur service for his nephew's friends now. Great.) (He remembered painfully what it had been like before Jin Ling had had any friends at all, and how much happier he was now. So what if he was a little indulgent? A-Ling deserved that!)
"They gave him a sedative," Lan Sizhui said apologetically, beneath his own multitudinous embrace. "I think it hit him pretty hard. He was going on about the new drama he's watching…" "Everyone should watch it," Lan Jingyi said, in a slow, sing-song voice. He opened his mouth, as if to yawn, and then frowned when nothing happened. He smacked his lips and tried again. And again. He was distracted from trying a fourth time by Jin Ling shoving a cup of water in his face. A bit forceful, maybe, considering how half of it slopped down Lan Jingyi's front, but Jiang Cheng figured his nephew had the right caring spirit. Lan Xichen's smile was beginning to look slightly concerned. "I wasn't aware your brother hadn't informed you he was in the hospital," he said to Jiang Cheng; ostensibly, it was a murmur, but the general noise of the ER around them made it closer to normal volume. "I apologize if I've overstepped." "You haven't," Jiang Cheng said automatically, because it was impossible to be rude to Lan Xichen without feeling some kind of guilty about it; it was like kicking a baby….small animal thing. Like a chipmunk? No, bigger than that. He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, blocking out the whole mess before him for a few blessed moments. When he opened his eyes again he discovered Wei Ying had taken those few moments to open a bag of vending machine gummy worms, one-handed, and spill them all over the bed. "Should you even be eating those?" Jiang Cheng asked, dodging Nurse Wen-- who had moved on to attempt the blood pressure cuff on Lan Jingyi, a better patient only in the context of having Wei Ying go before him-- and picking up the now-empty bag to check the label. Sugar dust poured out of the rip down the center, sticking to Jiang Cheng's hands. He sighed again, pointedly, at Wei Ying. "Mm-mm," said Wei Ying through a mouthful of gummy worms, shrugging. Jiang Cheng threw the bag at his face. It fluttered disappointingly through the air between them, coming to a gentle rest on Wei Ying's blanketed knee.
"If you don't want a Lan as your emergency contact, you could have just put me," Jiang Cheng said. He raised a hand as he saw Wei Ying's eyes bulge, mouth opening to show half-chewed gummies (gross). "Don't! Don't say anything! Whatever you're about to say, stop it!" "You do love me!" Wei Ying said anyway, in blatant disregard of Jiang Cheng's express orders. Jiang Cheng felt his face flush hot, and he stepped back as fast as he could, dodging the clumsy sweep of Wei Ying's arm. "A-Yuan, he's being mean to me," Wei Ying whined, turning on his side. He got caught on the tube from his IV; grumbling, Jiang Cheng moved to drape it safely over the back of his pillow. "I think you might deserve it this time, dad." "Hey! Hey!" "Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" "Please stop moving, I'm almost finished I promise--"

first lines: fic-writers meme
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (if you have less than 20, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favourite opening line. Then tag 10 of your favourite authors!
I was tagged by @la-muerta! I've mostly been archiving my kissing fics on AO3 lately, so that's what these will be, probably. I'm going to skip the ones where the first line was given to me by another person, since those are not illustrative. I am also skipping my filks. XD
1. Terms of Care - in answer to the prompt: "wei wuxian & wen ning + forehead kisses"
“Ah, Wen Ning, come join me!” Wei Wuxian exclaimed, waving Wen Ning over to his spot in the bunny clearing.
2. Not To Be Alone - in answer to the prompt: "jiang cheng/song lan - hating separation"
“I was in shock still, and I said such awful things… So I’m looking for him now, to apologise. To say: traveling with you is better than traveling without you.”
3. This One's Spicy - in answer to the prompt: "lan jingyi/lan sizhui - yi city"
Lan Jingyi was still making elaborate disgusted faces, scraping his teeth over his tongue and the like.
4. fell through the cracks, but we're okay - in answer to the prompt: "oyzz/a-qing, au where they meet when they're both alive"
“Excuse me, are there any powerful people around here? Powerful people who cultivate?”
5. All This Burning Sexual Tension - in answer to the prompt: "wei wuxian/wen qing + laughter"
“Qing jiějiě!” Wei Wuxian shouts, bursting into the mess. “Jiang Cheng has brought it to my attention that we need to work out the unbearable sexual tension between us.”
6. In the Officers' Baths - in answer to the prompt: "mu nihuang/xia dong - something fun and not sad"
“Jùnzhǔ!”
7. in this great golden tower - in answer to the prompt: "qin su/wen qing, koi tower"
Qin Su has never asked xiǎo-Qing about her past.
8. sharp words, soft hands - in answer to the prompt: "chengxuan after like a big battle or something and one of them is hurt and the other one is worried and expressing it through getting snappy?"
Jin Zixuan opens his mouth to speak when Jiang Wanyin strides into his tent, but before he can say anything, the Jiang sect leader snaps, “Don’t bother. I saw exactly how it happened. You’d think someone raised in the great Lanling Jin sect would have learned a modicum of tactics.”
9. corpse kiss - in answer to the prompt: "how about wn/jzx with the prompt “qiongqi path”" (content warning: this one is noncon)
There was no longer a flute playing, but Wen Ning was still rushing toward Jin Zixuan like a hurricane in human form.
10. Closed Fist, Warm Mouth - in answer to the prompt: "xianxuan, in the middle of an argument"
It was lucky that Jin Zixuan had stomped away from his entourage as well as from the Jiang contingent, because it meant that there was no one to stop Wei Wuxian from throwing a punch this time.
11. Growing Things - in answer to the prompt: "lan sizhui & ouyang zizhen (my underappreciated boi!), growing things"
The Baling gardens were one of Lan Sizhui’s favorite places.
12. what's left when revenge is over - in answer to the prompt: "Sisi/Nie Huaisang post Guanyin temple"
“It’s done, then,” Sisi says, standing behind Nie Huaisang and beginning to take his hair down.
13. a good bruise - in answer to the prompt: "chengqing, jiang-furen wen qing. after training disciples"
They have been married for just over a year, but it still somehow seems scandalous to Wen Qing that she gets to be here, in Sect Master Jiang’s own personal quarters, as he gets ready for his post-training bath; that she gets to pull at the ties on his outer robes, skim her fingers along his collarbones to feel him shiver, help him shrug off each successive layer of clothes until all that’s left between her and his sweat-slick skin are her own clothes.
14. why the hell not - in answer to the prompt: "wwx/nhs, burial mounds. why the hell not"
“Nie xiong, what the hell are you doing here?”
15. Rivers and Lakes, Towns and Cities - a prequel of my Songxiao Middle Earth AU, where the Elf Xiao Xingchen meets the Human Song Lan after leaving Baoshan Sanren's mountain (which is, like, an Asian equivalent of Rivendell)
Baoshan Sanren always said that the world west of the Mountain was full of corruption and iniquity, that the Western Elves were liars to a one, and that the gods they called the Valar were betrayers.
16. A Hundred Beautiful Things - The Untamed (TV) fandom, Jiang Yanli/Nie Huaisang political marriage set after the Qishan indoctrination arc.
It was an adjustment, to be sure.
17. Taste You In My Core - 魔道祖师/Mo Dao Zu Shi novel fandom, Nie Huaisang/Xiao Xingchen monster4monster porn with Eldritch Xiao Xingchen and Beast Nie Huaisang.
“Are you all right, gōngzǐ?" the young man asks, and Nie Huaisang does his best not to laugh.
18. A Fruitful Correspondence - The Untamed (TV) fandom, Lan Wangji is forcibly befriended by Jiang Yanli (and by extension Jin Zixuan and Jiang Cheng) during the time that Wei Wuxian and the Wens are holed up in the Burial Mounds.
Lan Wangji’s plan upon attending the wedding between Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli is to put in the bare minimum of appearances and then go home at the earliest opportunity.
19. Bored - Leverage (!!) fandom, in Season 2, Episode 1, Parker mentioned stealing the Hope Diamond and then putting it back. This is the story of that heist.
Planning the heist still carries the same thrill as it always does: scoping out guard rotations, evaluating the schematics for their new security system (laughable, even with the increased bandwidth to support a greater number of security cameras), visiting the museum as a paying guest… Parker loves this part, and it’s good to stretch her muscles in this way, relying on no one but herself.
20. Best Friends for Best Friends - The Untamed/MDZS fandom (could go with either canon) fic for Jin Ling's birthday featuring the Juniors quartet and a whole litter of puppies - this is an archived threadfic that was cleaned up and then thrown on AO3.
Jin Ling totally forgot about the "no pets at Cloud Recesses" rule, okay?
--
I've noticed that I tend to like to start with some kind of dialogue most frequently; otherwise, something to establish the POV character's interiority. The big exception is the Middle Earth fic where I was emulating Tolkien's narrator, somewhat.
I think of these twenty, my favorite opening line is probably either 7 or 16. They're so sparse, but still set up a lot.
Tagging @hunxi-guilai, @iamwestiec, @bladedweaponsandswishycoats, @shadaras, @withbroombefore, @vyther15, @vivisextion if y'all wanna play! If not, no worries ofc :3

MDZS Fic Rec List 2/∞
Just some more of my fav fics. Sorry I keep putting WIP fics on these lists but I love making myself wait for updates.
Part 1
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
to victory belongs by yonaka_tan (T, WIP, Wangxian & MXY/LJY)
Oof. This fic. I love MXY so much and I think he deserves so much love. And that is what this fic is doing for him. Giving him the love he deserves. This author is doing a fantastic job keeping everyone in character and even the few OC characters they’ve added just feel like they belong in the MDZS world. There are a few trigger warnings but the author has them all tagged and also mentions them in the notes on the chapters that require them. Just read it okay.
Until It’s Dark by suzvoy (M, WIP but almost finished, Wangxian)
I’m a sucker for any fic that has the whole golden core issue at its heart and this one sucked me right in. As I read this one I began to worry that I wouldn’t like the direction the author was going with how they characterized LWJ but I fell in love with his character development. This fic has a little angst but also so much fluff it almost suffocation (but it’s not. I love it).
Something Yet to Learn by Glitterbombshell (T, Complete, Wangxian)
Teacher WWX. Another weakness of mine. LQR having to rely on WWX for help? another weakness. This fic hist all the right spots for me in terms of a lighthearted fluff fic with a lil bit of angst sprinkled on top, as a treat. Only 4 chapters long its a quick read but oh so satisfying. I really do hope the author comes back to this or writes a sequel.
Eldritch!Lans AU Series by syriala (G, Oneshots, JC/LXC, Wangxian, LJY/LSH)
Oh my goooooooood. These fics. So so so amazing I could die. I didn’t realize how much I needed some good LXC/JC content in my life until these fics and damn if the author didn’t deliver. Also, Eldritch creatures? Definitely something I didn't know I needed until I read these fics. And now I just want so much more of this universe the author has created. So far there’s 8 parts of this series though almost all of them can be read as stand alones. The only one I haven’t read is the JingYi/Sizhui pairing one as that is not a ship I particularly like though I have no doubt that one is just as good as the other 7 fics. The author is here on tumblr, lurking.
Just the sight of you (is getting the best out of me) by Ibijau (E, WIP, Jin Ling/Lan Sizhui, background Wangxian)
This one I read when it was just a wee one shot and then the author gave us a gift of another chapter. This one can still be read as a one-shot as the rest of the chapters are kinda just extras and a look into other characters POV’s during the main events. It is a A/B/O fic and i have to admit, I basically never touch these fics. But this one? Killed me. Lots of pining and the author lets Sizhui bottom which I don't often see in this pairing (which is really weird to me considering their personalities but that’s neither here nor there). This fic is mostly in the POV of Jin Ling and I loved his character growth and all the interactions he had with not only Jiang Cheng but Wei Wuxian as well. All in all a good solid read if you're in the mood for a bit of pining and angst.

I might just be figuring out this website.  So @bloody-bee-tea wrote this drabble as part of the Eldritch!lan AU and I had to draw Jingyi because honestly that would be me. Always hungry

*sizhui steps in to save wwx from being pierced by a sword*
Grief had been a constant companion to Wei Wuxian, he blamed no one for this. It was his own world, his own doings. He had stepped into the boots he wore. Than Mo had called him, summoned him back and gave up a body forcing him to continue a life--forced to seek revenge for something that if he was honest with himself he would have stopped had he known and been alive to do so.
Where had he been. He had been gone. He had been somewhere dark. It had not been a hell had it ? He didn't remember. He was doing the best with what he was given, his Swiss cheese memory did not aid him, at random times he had flashes of his past. He had brief glimpses in the before.
He was the master of the Stygian Tiger Seal. He had not bothered to re-craft it. He didn't need to. He was a wizard. He might never again wield his blade, but he made himself useful in other ways. His inventions were unique and quiet useful. He trained students, he had a surprising knack for that ! He wouldn't have imagined and he often traveled with Lan Zhan and the Kids, he had labeled them his Kids, not even jokingly.
Wei Ying had been worried all day, there was something in the air that made him shiver and it wasn't from cold or from the touch of his husband who was settling a dispute at the Koi Tower. Temperament change, he knew was the concern. He was not speaking or chatting away about something that had caught his attention and he was constantly twirling the flute between his fingers. He was worried for what he didn’t know--he wished Lan Zhan was here on this night hunt.
The signal that went off had his attention instantly, he had been sitting having tea talking to the local Inkeeper. It didn't take him long to settle his bill and be off.
Arriving on the scene it was strangely calm. That set off alarm bells to.
"Senior we found her." his second son pointed out. He might not be Lan like but Wei Ying liked him just the same. He was pointed to a little girl, who was dressed in ragged traveling clothing and clutching a duffel in her arms. She seemed afraid of the boy's and shied from them.
"Now, than who are you ?" he asked the little girl. There was something not right about her and the moment she lay eyes on him it was clear that she recognized him for what he was.  She took a few steps back from Wei Wuxian who took two steps towards her. Something was NOT right.  Children unlike animals seemed to love him. He could never be rid of them.
"Where did you find her ?" he asked as his fingers quickly went through the motions of a spell, he was going to find out what was truly going on here. The girl's form blurred and overlapped for a brief instant with something else.  Gray eyes went wide. "Boy's get back." he snapped that out immediately and he didn't have time for a talisman, quickly he bit his finger and inscribed a talisman into his palm. He sent it out to protect the boy's the netting ward he was fond of surrounded them it would protect from something of this level.
“The road.” Jin Ling called answering the question even though he cursed about being bound.
He could deal with the demon but he knew the boy's couldn't so when it struck out at him he knew he wasn't fast enough. Not while trying to craft the rune that would banish it. He would have to take the hit, he was braced for it. Pain was no stranger to him neither was being badly hurt, he could cast through the pain.
It was the blur of white, and all he could think was that Yuan was so like his father, the sudden movement the sudden defense, but he did not have the years or the skill that Lan Zhan had. he was not the swordsman that Wangji was, he was still young yet. He might yet match the Second Jade, but not today.  So when He landed in front of his father, his footing wasn't as sure and the bone creatures spear like weapon pierced the boy, who crumpled.
"YUUUUUAAANNNN" the scream tore out of him and in that instant there was a flash of Yiling Patriarch in all of his glory. The wind fluttered around him spun like one might see a tornado. His hands clenched at his sides even as he caught the boy as he fell. He was NOT a healer, Not capable of energy transference like his husband, he was not able to staunch wounds save the old fashioned way, he was not useful in this situation. His Golden Core was not much of a flicker even in Mo's body.  He wanted to defy the Heavens.  There was still a bleakness in him, that darkness that only Lan Zhan saw the brief flashes of and lit for him, because he kept it tapped down, bound deep inside. Least he repeat mistakes of his past life.
He touched on it, he opened to box and he let it out. He pulled from the ground the dark shadows that began to leak up from the earth. There were naturally occurring pockets of yin energy and he was more than capable of channeling them. In his state of terror and numbness he let them in. They flowed through him like blood in his veins, his eyes took on the hint of red that they always did. At his side the flute floated on the current.
Eager to do what it had been crafted for.
The bone demon that thought it had time to gloat at its success was on limited time. It just didn't know it yet. It would NOT return to what ever hell it had sprung from. That would be too kind. The flute music rang out loud and piercing, it shattered the night the way his heart was shattering. He felt what it did to his body and he didn't care not in the moment. "Get up." he commanded darkly to the ground. Beneath the long dead that had been left on this mountain battle field pulled themselves from the ground.  A shadow passed over the moon above them. It passed over his soul as well.
Jin Ling who had been unofficially adopted into the small squad was screaming as well. At the stillness of the boy that was on the ground. Wrapped in the outer cloak of his father.  Jin Ling had grown close to him over the time night hunting with the group.
Lan Jingyi who had never seen Seinor Wei in such a light was afraid , still he shook Jin Ling. "SEND LAN ZHAN THE MESSAGE BUTTERFLY." he screamed at him. He doubted even one of them had a chance of getting through to the flutist as he floated up into the air, the shadowy energy seemed to respond to him as though it had missed him.It was around him like a whippoorwill.
The Bone Demon was unaware of what was going on, it had turned from hunter to hunted in the span of a few minutes. It was an elderly thing, crafty eldritch and wily. It did not recognize the soft seeming man for the power that was now binding it to the ground. Even as the dead made themselves known, some had rusty swords and other had nothing but their hands. It fought ferociously but it was no match for anything Wei Wuxian enforced.
It was haunting to watch, the boy's in the safe net got a show. It was unlike his playful ways. This was pure and simple vengeance walking. The bone creature also known as Bai Gu Jing. Wei Wuxian leveled a gaze at it as it was simply over powered by the force of his undead and his will. Blood leaked from his nose and he brought his sleeve up to wipe it away he could deal with that later. His hand went to the tassel at his hip it was part of a matching set, its mate was with his beloved. He snapped it off his belt and tossed it out blood smeared across it in binding symbols. The White Bone Demon had no chance to even know what was happening it was being pulled into the impromptu talisman. It was of high quality, it had not been inexpensive, or a mere item of show, it was infused with love and affection, it was the worse thing that Wei Ying could do to it. A prison where it would continue to burn with the energies of light. Instilled by Lan Zhan.
He spun he was not going to loose control. Not this time. Not when his kids needed him.
"Senior Wei ?" the voice came to him. "Jin Ling has sent for Lan Zhan."
He smiled faintly at the mention of his love.
"Good." he said simply and turned to the dead "Protect them, you may rest again once you hear Clarity " he commanded them. Blinking back the tears of blood that burned his eyes. He motioned to free the boy's from the net of protection. Though they scooted away from the dead, they were not in the least afraid of Wei Ying. He had protected them and saved them numerous times. “Stay back.” he cautioned them.
He had dropped from where he had been floating, his flute tucked back into his belt. He took a few steps himself before swaying and dropping next to Shizhui "Stay with me Yuan." he whispered. A spirit bag in his hand, this one very elegant, embroidered both lotus and clouds. He set it near the boy. Just in case, if the soul fled--he would be able to drag it back.
Kicking and screaming if need be.
He had to shake his head he had over done it his mind was fuzzy.  He drew his son into his arms and clutched him the bag between them. He felt the world spin and the concerned questions of the boy's around him. He didn't understand the words though. He couldn't tell them he'd be fine words weren't coming He clutched the charm in one hand. his outward robe around his son. He didn't know if the boy would live, but he would keep him warm and loved.
Darkness sparked the edges of his vision and for once it was a welcome thing. When the wave of exhaustion washed over him. He allowed it to take him. It was better than the voices he heard pleading with him not to leave, his sister, his mother, his father, his chosen family in the Burial Mounds.  Still echoing as he slumped forward.
"Wei Ying." he heard the plea of his name than the darkness had swept everything away.

Note
i know this isn't sad angst per se but i think it fits enough for this blog ; i found a fic where Lan Sizhui is a hidden eldritch abomination and Jin Ling is supposedly the only one in cloud recesses who notices and panics and paranoies when he realizes, should i send it ?
Oh! Are you talking about Lurking? Because I’ve read that and I love it! I dont normally go for horror, but this fic is wonderful! Jin Ling’s growing paranoia and terror and then the hurt and loneliness he goes through after he begins avoiding Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi~ Its all so great!
I’ve also not been able to stop thinking about how Eldritch!LZS would react to someone else flirting with JL but thats neither here nor there

Untamed Winter Fest Day 12
Sparkle
This is yet again set in the Eldritch!Lan AU from the anon on @angstymdzsthoughts (I’m planning to do one for all the sects are monsters, too because I am weak and it’s just all too good) Previous part
Lan Jingyi doesn’t know how to start. He’s wringing his hands in front of his chest, Lan Sizhui watching him with a patience Lan Jingyi envies him for and Lan Jingyi just can’t find the words.
It’s not even just about telling Lan Sizhui that he’s in love with him. That would be almost easy, compared to the other thing he has to tell him.
“Jingyi, why don’t you just spit it out?” Lan Sizhui asks him and Lan Jingyi sees how his eyes sparkle, so he’s clearly amused at the whole situation.
Lan Jingyi wishes he could say the same.
“It’s not that easy,” he hisses, because it’s not.
It’s really, really not.
Lan Jingyi knows, logically, that Hanguang-Jun or Zewu-Jun have probably already told Lan Sizhui about their other forms, about their true forms, but just like in all things, Jingyi has to be different in this one as well.
He can feel his form shift, can feel his many jaws press against the human skin he wraps himself in, and he wants to do nothing more than run away and hide, and let Lan Sizhui believe that he’s like his father and uncle.
“So, I’m not human,” Lan Jingyi eventually just blurts out, encouraged by Lan Sizhui’s still patient, if amused, glance and Lan Sizhui sucks in a breath, clearly waiting for more.
“Jingyi, not to ruin this for you, but you know I know that, right?” he wants to know and it’s exactly like Lan Jingyi expected.
Of course his father already told him.
“No offence to your ability to appear human, you’re very good at that now, but you had trouble maintaining your form when we were little. You once swallowed a whole chicken, Jingyi, that’s hardly normal,” Lan Sizhui explains and Lan Jingyi almost dares to relax.
If he doesn’t know how Hanguang-Jun and Zewu-Jun look, then his form won’t even strike him as that strange.
“And besides, father already told me. I know what you look like”
And there goes Lan Jingyi’s hope.
“Oh,” he breathes out, his jaws opening all at once in a silent scream, and he prays to all the ancestors that his skin will hold.
It does, if just barely, and Lan Jingyi wraps his arms around himself, tries to keep himself together. It’s not always easy.
“Jingyi?” Lan Sizhui asks in concern, clearly seeing his distress on his face and he takes a cautious step forwards, just as Lan Jingyi takes a step back.
“What’s wrong?” Lan Sizhui wants to know, but Lan Jingyi shakes his head.
“Nothing, nothing at all, why would you say something is wrong?” Lan Jingyi tries to play it off, tries to act like nothing at all is wrong, but Lan Sizhui knows him way too well for that.
“Jingyi, tell me,” he almost demands, but Lan Jingyi barely hears him.
His jaws are opening and closing constantly now, shifting agitatedly and trying to break through, but he can’t let Lan Sizhui see, not if he knows how they are supposed to look like. He closes his eyes, tries to take deep and calming breaths, like Zewu-Jun taught him once, but it’s barely helping.
“Jingyi,” Lan Sizhui suddenly whispers from way too close and Lan Jingyi startles when he puts his hands on his shoulders. “Tell me what’s wrong.”
“I’m not—,” he starts and then has to swallow to keep his jaw from unhinging mid word before he can continue. “I’m not like your father.”
“I should hope not,” Lan Sizhui says with a teasing sparkle in his eyes and while Lan Jingyi appreciates his attempt, he shakes his head.
“No, you don’t understand. I’m not—they are all shapeless and beautiful, covered in eyes. I’m not like that,” Lan Jingyi tries to explain, but he knows it’s difficult for Lan Sizhui to understand without actually seeing it.
Lan Jingyi hasn’t shifted in a long time in the presence of someone other that Zewu-Jun, in fear of mockery and rejection. Zewu-Jun has always accepted him like he was, without judging his form, but Lan Jingyi knows not all of the Lans do that.
Lan Qiren is very adamant that something with Lan Jingyi must be wrong, for him to take the form he has. It’s not his loudness that has brought him the title of the un-lanest Lan that has ever been.
“Jingyi, why don’t you just show me?” Lan Sizhui wants to know but Lan Jingyi shakes his head.
“Sizhui, why won’t you understand? You’ll be disgusted and then you’ll leave.”
“You’re an idiot,” Lan Sizhui tells him with a smile and leans forward to softly brush his lips over Lan Jingyi’s, who immediately flinches back and covers his mouth with his hands when he feels his jaw opening wide. Wider than any human jaw can.
“Jingyi?” Lan Sizhui asks, and for the first time he sounds unsure. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed,” Lan Sizhui mutters but Lan Jingyi furiously shakes his head, still trying to get his jaw to cooperate.
He has always reacted way too strongly to emotions. It’s one of his many problems, as Lan Qiren never tires to tell him.
“I’m not mad about that,” Lan Jingyi tries, and he cringes when his voice still comes out distorted and wrong. He works his jaw a few times, forces it into the human form again and then tries once more. “Really, I’m not. That’s the second thing I wanted to tell you, actually,” he tells Lan Sizhui who’s staring with wide eyes at him.
“You wanted to tell me you love me?” Lan Sizhui asks and Lan Jingyi nods, and this time he’s prepared for when Lan Sizhui enters his space again. “You dummy,” Lan Sizhui breathes out and pulls Lan Jingyi into a hug. “Of course I know you love me. Don’t you know I love you, too?”
Lan Jingyi can do nothing but nod, because he has known, that’s why that part of the confession today was the easy one.
“I know that,” he gives back, needs to reassure Lan Sizhui that that was never even the question, but he also gently pushes Lan Sizhui away from him. “It’s just, this form. You won’t like it,” he tells him, because Lan Jingyi knows he won’t.
Even Zewu-Jun needed some time to get used to it.
“Why don’t you just show me and let me be the judge of that?” Lan Sizhui asks and Lan Jingyi knows he should do it, it’s actually what he set out to do today, but the thought is still terrifying to him.
“I never shifted with a human present,” Lan Jingyi explains and when Lan Sizhui makes a face at that, Lan Jingyi lightly slaps him. “Shut up, I didn’t fully shift, not even as a kid!”
“True,” Lan Sizhui allows and darts forward to press a kiss to his cheek. “Let me see, Jingyi.”
“You can’t—you have to remember that I would never hurt you,” Lan Jingyi tells him and Lan Sizhui frowns at him.
“I know that, Jingyi, why would you even say that. No matter what form you take, it’s still you.”
“I’m hard to look at,” Lan Jingyi whispers. “Please don’t be disgusted.”
“Jingyi, I love you. I won’t be, I promise.”
Lan Jingyi nods at that, though he still hesitates for a few more seconds. This is it. Either, Lan Sizhui is telling the truth, or he’ll be calling Lan Jingyi a monster in just a few moments.
Lan Jingyi isn’t sure he could stand that.
“Okay,” he finally says and then just lets go of his human form all at once.
His human skin drops immediately and he expands, his form finally taking the room it deserves. He knows he’s small, not even half as big as the other Lan’s, and it has nothing to do with his age.
Where the others are sleek black, swirling tentacles and countless eyes, Lan Jingyi is not. He’s small, and compact; he’s edges everywhere and the color he takes can barely even be described as grey.
But most unsettling of all is that he has gaping maws all over his body. His jaws are huge, his teeth white and sharp, and he’s covered in them.
Where others have eyes, he has this.
Lan Jingyi is so concerned with Lan Sizhui’s reaction, that he doesn’t even notice that shifting in the presence of a human feels stranger than normal. Like he’s even more exposed.
He doesn’t have any eyes in this form; isn’t sure he could ever adequately describe how he sees without any, but he does, and that’s the only important part.
So he sees Lan Sizhui’s eyes go big, sees them dart all over his body, and Lan Jingyi tries to make himself smaller, pulls his limbs closer to himself, but he knows it doesn’t help. The jaws don’t go anywhere. He doesn’t even have lips to cover his teeth with.
He knows he makes a sound, something wretched; it’s just another thing none of the others can do, and he sees Lan Sizhui startle.
“I didn’t know you could make a sound,” Lan Sizhui tells him, explains his reaction and Lan Jingyi relaxes, just the tiniest bit.
He makes a questioning sound, most of his jaws opening to let it out, and Lan Sizhui cringes with the sheer volume of it. Lan Jingyi never learned to regulate that.
“It’s just a bit loud,” Lan Sizhui reassures him as well, and then he smiles at Lan Jingyi. “Jingyi, you’re adorable!”
Lan Jingyi bristles, instinct making him bigger, trying for a more menacing look by allowing his jaws to open wide, but Lan Sizhui just laughs.
“Don’t be offended,” he chastises him. “It’s the truth.”
Lan Jingyi starts to pull himself together again, compresses his form into the human skin again, but Lan Sizhui reaches out with a gasp.
“No! Don’t, Jingyi, let me look some more. Can I touch you?” he wants to know and Lan Jingyi hovers in his half form, unsure where to go from there.
But Lan Sizhui seems honest in his request and so Lan Jingyi takes his normal form with a sigh again. It’s easier expanding than compressing himself, after all.
Lan Sizhui carefully steps closer, clearly wary of startling Lan Jingyi again, and when his hand just hovers over one of Lan Jingyi’s few tentacles, Lan Jingyi takes the initiative.
He pressed forward, allows Lan Sizhui’s hand to make contact, and he gasps at the feeling of a hand on him.
It’s entirely different than having the smooth tentacles of the others come into contact with his form, and no one in human form has ever touched him. They are afraid of getting hurt by his jaws, Lan Jingyi knows it. He can’t even be mad about that.
But Lan Sizhui doesn’t seem to have the same concerns, because he brushes his fingers over some of his teeth, careful not to get nicked by them, and he doesn’t seem disgusted in the slightest.
“Can you eat with all of them?” Lan Sizhui wants to know and Lan Jingyi nods with the tentacle he thinks of as his head.
“No wonder you’re always hungry,” Lan Sizhui mutters under his breath and Lan Jingyi blushes, even in this form.
When Lan Sizhui notices it, he lets out a delighted laugh.
“You are adorable,” Lan Sizhui reiterates again, and Lan Jingyi huffs but he bumps his tentacle into Lan Sizhui’s hand again.
He enjoys being touched like this.
Lan Sizhui finds one of the rare spots without a jaw and starts to scratch Lan Jingyi, like he would a dog. Lan Jingyi would take offence to that, if he wasn’t busy melting into the floor.
“I didn’t know you could liquify,” Lan Sizhui teasingly tells him and Lan Jingyi swiftly takes his human form again, just so he can glare at Lan Sizhui.
“It’s not funny,” he mutters. “I’m not used to being touched in that form.”
“Well, that’s something we have to change then,” Lan Sizhui decisively says and grabs Lan Jingyi by the lapels.
He pulls him up almost effortlessly and drags him right into a kiss.
“I love you,” Lan Sizhui breathes against his lips, “and that means I love you in both forms.”
Lan Jingyi can feel some tears sting at his eyes, so he flings his arms around Lan Sizhui and buries his face in his neck.
“I love you, too,” he mumbles, words almost swallowed by Lan Sizhui’s robes, but Lan Jingyi knows that Lan Sizhui heard him when his arms tighten around Lan Jingyi’s middle.
“No more hiding, okay?” Lan Sizhui asks him and Lan Jingyi can do nothing but agree to that.
Not that there is anything he has left to hide. Lan Sizhui knows all of him, now.
