CHAPTER ONE
ᴍᴀꜱᴛᴇʀʟɪꜱᴛ
𝚂𝙴𝙸𝙴𝚂 𝙼𝙰𝚂𝚃𝙴𝚁𝙻𝙸𝚂𝚃
To your surprise, you hadn't been pushed out of your group of friends. Most of them had been friends with Kelly longer than they had been with you so you had expected them to choose her over you. They stopped inviting her whenever they did something.
Everyone agreed that she went too far, plus they noticed they had so much more fun when she wasn't around. There was no one to be a bitch to make herself look good.
It took 2 weeks before you agreed to go out with them again, still too humiliated to look anyone in the eyes.
Ransom had tried to get you out of your apartment but failed every time. He swore to himself that if he ever saw that Trey guy again, he'd break his nose for making you cry.
They invited you every time, telling you to take your time. Whenever you were ready, they'd be there waiting for you.
Two weeks after the incident, Emma called you to tell you they were going to the fair. There's always one around this time of the year and they decided to all go. You had politely declined her invitation, again.
"Don't worry about it. We all get it. We miss you though. We'll be meeting in front of the fair at 6:30 tomorrow night, if you change your mind. We can't wait to see you again. Especially Ransom. He's been a pain in the ass since you stopped showing up."
You chuckled. "Isn't he always a pain in the ass?"
"Believe it or not, it got worse."
‘’I’ll do my best.’’ You promised her.
Then you went on to talk about her relationship with Jax. From the moment they met they were inseparable and you thought it was adorable.
When you got home the next day after work, you started thinking about going to meet them. Today’s Friday, so if anything happens you’ll be able to hide in your apartment until Monday. Emma said that everyone wants to see you, and Kelly is smart enough not to show up, especially not with Trey.
You traded your work clothes for a pair of blue jeans, a white t-shirt and your leather jacket. It was finally cool enough outside for you to wear it. As you put on your shoes, you checked the clock on the wall to see that it was 6:10 pm. You have 20 minutes to get there and meet them at the front, otherwise you’ll never be able to find them in the crowd.
You had decided to call a taxi instead of driving there, parking would most definitely be a bitch and you didn’t feel like parking 10 streets away and having to walk for close to an hour just to get there.
The closer you got to the fair, the more anxious you felt. You took several deep breaths as the driver pulled up to the curb. You paid him and got out. The moment the door was closed, he was back on the road. Looks like you can’t change your mind now.
Just like Emma had said, they were all waiting at the front at exactly 6:30. You loved having punctual friends.
You walked up to them quietly.
‘’Ransom, you could at least wait until we’re inside before you start bitching.’’ Emma rolled her eyes.
You smiled, nothing seemed to have changed.
They all had your backs to you, hunched up over a small map of the fair to maximize their time there and try to do as many things as possible.
‘’I think the best way to start would be here.’’ She pointed at the map. ‘’Which would be right over there.’’ She turned around to point to the actual fair.
Emma’s eyes widened when she saw you, a big grin on her face. You waved shyly at her. She pulled away from the group and quickly came to hug you, almost knocking the wind out of you.
‘’You came!’’ She stepped back, putting her hands on your shoulders to take a good look at you. ‘’God, I love that jacket.’’
‘’Don’t try to steal it again.’’ You warned her.
‘’I make no promises.’’
You rolled your eyes, laughing.
Ransom froze when he heard your laugh. He thought maybe it was just his imagination, wishful thinking, but then he saw that Emma had left their little circle.
‘’Jax, where’s Emma?’’ He asked him, he didn’t want to turn around in case he’d be disappointed. Again. He lost count of how many times he thought he had your voice or your laugh but it was never you.
‘’I don’t know.’’ He shrugged and turned around. ‘’Well, well, well.’’ He smiled when he saw you and walked over to greet you. Jaz wrapped his arm around his girlfriend’s shoulders.
‘’Look at you with the leather jacket. Is that why you weren’t around? You were touring the world with your rock band?’’ He teased.
You laughed. ‘’You got me.’’
Ransom finally found the courage to turn around and boy was he glad that he did. He thought about playing it cool but literally everyone knew you had him wrapped around your finger and he didn’t even care.
He let go of the map to come meet you instead.
‘’I thought you weren’t coming.’’
You looked in Ransom’s direction and greeted him with a bigger smile than you had for Emma and Jax. Even if you stopped hanging out with everyone for a little while, you talked with Ransom every day. Whether it was by texts or calls, you were constantly talking to each other and you had grown much closer.
‘’I can leave if you don’t want me here.’’ You teased him.
All 3 of them said ‘’NO!!’’ at the same time, making you laugh some more.
‘’I was just kidding, but I appreciate the enthusiasm.’’
Emma dragged Jax away, leaving you alone with Ransom. Not without winking at you over her shoulder.
It didn’t take more than a couple of seconds for Ransom to pull you into a hug after they were gone. His arms went to your waist while your arms went around his neck, slightly pulling him down.
‘’Hi.’’ He said, close to your ear.
‘’Hi.’’ You smiled.
‘’How are you feeling?’’ He kissed your forehead and then looked down at you.
‘’Same as this morning, but a lot more anxious.’’
He had asked you the same question this morning when he called you to chat while you were getting ready to go to work.
‘’The fair is going to help make you feel better.’’ He took a step back. ‘’You’re coming in, right?’’
You nodded. ‘’Yep.
‘’Great.’’ He grinned.
Emma called out both your names, it was your turn to get in. It was odd to see Ransom wearing jeans, he usually always has dress pants on. The sweater stayed though. He probably didn’t want to risk ruining an expensive pair of pants.
‘’You should take a picture, it’ll last longer.’’ Ransom said to you as you walked to your friends.
‘’Uh?’’ You looked up at him.
‘’You couldn’t stop checking out my ass. You can take a picture.’’
‘’It’ll probably disappoint you, but I was actually looking at your jeans. I think it’s the first time I’ve seen you wear them.’’
Ransom pouted. ‘’You could have lied and said you were daydreaming about my ass.’’
‘’Aw.’’ You patted his shoulder. ‘’I’m sorry. I was totally checking out your ass.’’
‘’Thank you.’’ He sighed with pretend relief.
You paid for your ticket and walked over to the guy who had to put on your bracelet that would allow you to come in and out of the fair for the night. He was struggling a little bit and ended up having to cut it to give you another one.
‘’Jesus, how complicated is it to put a bracelet on someone?’’
‘’I am so sorry.’’ You apologized for Ransom. ‘’You’re doing great.’’ You smiled to encourage him.
Ransom snorted behind you and you gave another apologetic smile to the employee.
As soon as your bracelet was one, you started walking away without waiting for Ransom.
He quickly caught up with you.
‘’Why didn’t you wait for me?’’
You stopped walking and turned to look at him. ‘’Did you really need to be rude to the guy?’’
‘’A monkey could do his job.’’ He rolled his eyes.
‘’So? He was probably 16 years old, have you thought about the fact that maybe it was his first job? His first day? He was trying really hard and his nerves got to him. It happens to everyone.’’ You shook your head. ‘’That was not ok.’’
You started to move again, trying to catch up with the rest of the group. Ransom just stared at you as you walked away from him. He had been looking forward to seeing you again since he dropped you off at your place weeks ago, even more after spending so much time getting close to you. You were finally opening yourself up to him and you even thought that he wasn’t a bad person anymore.
Yet, he managed to ruin all the progress he had made with you because he couldn’t keep his mouth shut.
When Emma saw you, she looked around and frowned. ‘’Where’s Ransom?’’
You shrugged. ‘’I don’t know.’’
She sighed. ‘’What happened?’’
‘’What makes you think something happened?’’
‘’Because 10 minutes ago you were all over each other, he’s been bitching and moaning every day when you didn’t show up, and the second he saw you he was on you. So, what happened?’’
‘’He was rude to the teenager at the gate who put on our bracelets. He made fun of him, in his face.’’
Emma groaned. ‘’I miss when it was just us girls.’’
You chuckled. ‘’Well, it’s all your fault. If you hadn’t fallen for Jax, we wouldn’t be here.’’
‘’Let’s blame Jax.’’
You nodded. ‘’Let’s.’’
You hooked your arm through hers and you started walking again. By the time you reached the first game, Ransom had caught up to the group but he didn’t say a word.
‘’Let’s do that one.’’ Jax pointed to a precision game.
There were targets that you needed to hit with soft bullets from a fake gun.
‘’Get me the big stuffed animal.’’ Emma grinned at her boyfriend.
‘’You got it baby.’’ He winked and they each tried, failing miserably.
‘’Miss, wanna try?’’ The guy working the booth asked, looking at you.
‘’Sure.’’ You stepped up and grabbed the gun. ‘’Which one do I need to hit for the big panda?’’
He pointed to one of the smaller targets at the back. You got into position, held the gun with both hands, tilted your head to the side, took a deep breath and pulled the trigger. You put the gun down and smiled.
‘’Bullseye.’’ The guy said, impressed.
He handed you the big panda and you gave it to Emma. ‘’There you go, baby.’’ You teased Jax.
They all looked at you with wide eyes.
You frowned. ‘’What?’’
‘’Where did you learn to shoot like that?’’ Jax asked the question everyone wanted answers to.
‘’My dad taught me when I was a kid and I just kept practicing. I still do.’’ You shrugged.
‘’I’m gonna go ahead and say it, because we’re all thinking it: that was hot as fuck.’’ Emma said.
You felt heat rush to your cheeks. You were suddenly very uncomfortable with everyone’s gaze on you.
‘’You’re only saying that because I gave you a big ass bear.’’ You joked, trying to move the focus away from you.
Emma quickly noticed you getting uncomfortable so she played along. ‘’Thank goodness for you, my boyfriend was useless.’’
‘’Hey!’’ Jax said. ‘’I’m right here.’’
‘’Oops.’’ Emma grinned.
‘’You probably should go put it in your car, unless you want to carry it around the whole time.’’ You suggested.
‘’Great idea.’’ She gave the bear to Jax. ‘’Babe, go put my bear in the car.’’
Jax took the bear and grabbed Emma’s hand, pulling her close to him. ‘’You’re coming with me.’’
‘’We’ll wait here.’’ You said before they walked away.
You put your hands in the front pockets of your jeans and looked around to see what else you could do once they were back.
‘’I went back and apologized.’’ Ransom said after a few minutes of awkward silence.
You turned around to look at him. ‘’You did?’’
He nodded.
‘’That’s really good.’’
He took a few steps towards you. ‘’Are you mad at me?’’
‘’I’m not mad, but I’m not happy either.’’
‘’I’m sorry.’’ He said, sincerely. ‘’Can you forgive me?’’
Ransom really was sorry. Sorry that he made you mad, sorry that his attitude affected you and that it made you push him away. In all honesty, he couldn’t care less about the 16 year old boy who can’t put on a bracelet to save his life. He apologized because that’s what you would have done and Ransom wants to be good for you. He doesn’t care about anyone else, even less about their feelings. But for you? He’d be willing to apologize to every single person he’s ever been rude to in his life. That’s a lot of people to apologize to, but if you asked him he’d do it in a heartbeat.
You wanted to tell him no, that you weren’t going to forgive him. Ransom’s always going to be this way, you know that. He’s been like this for far too long for him to change now, and you doubt he even wants to. But with you he’s the softest man you’ve ever met and that’s what keeps pulling you in. You absolutely hate the way he treats other people but you love the way he treats you. Your brain and your heart are constantly at war when it comes to Ransom.
You sighed. ‘’I forgive you, but you need to stop treating people like dirt.’’
‘’I will.’’ He promised.
At least when you’re there, he doesn’t promise he’ll behave when you aren’t around to hear him.
It took about an hour before you had completely warmed up to Ransom again. Soon, he had his arm wrapped around your shoulders as you walked around with the rest of the group. He quickly gave up on that though, because people kept bumping into you and he was starting to get pissed off. His arm dropped back down to his side, a few seconds later he brushed his hand against yours and that gave him the idea to hold your hand instead. He slid his hand into yours and waited to see if you were going to pull away but when you didn’t move, he took it as a good sign.
Even better than that, you intertwined your fingers with his and held onto him. He couldn’t stop the smile that spread on his face, no matter how hard he tried.
You stayed like this for the entire night. If one of you had to let go or pull away, your hands would find each other again soon after.
The fair was closing soon, it was very dark outside so everyone wanted to go ride the ferris wheel.
You let go of Ransom’s hand. ‘’I’ll wait for you guys here.’’
Ransom frowned. ‘’Why?’’
‘’I’m scared of heights, and it’s windy up there.’’
‘’I’ll hold your hand.’’ He grinned.
You smiled but shook your head. ‘’It won’t be fun for anyone if I get on. It terrifies me. Go, I’ll wait on the bench over there.’’
‘’We’ll take pictures for you.’’ Emma said.
You smiled. ‘’Thanks. Have fun.’’
You turned around and walked over to the bench. You sat facing the wheel to try to see your friends.
Too busy looking up, you didn’t see Ransom coming until he sat next to you.
‘’What are you doing?’’ You asked, surprised. ‘’I thought you wanted to go with everyone else.’’
He shook his head. ‘’Not everyone else, just you but you’re sitting over here so there’s no point on being over there.’’
‘’Since when did Ransom Drysdale become a big softie?’’ You teased, trying to hide how much what he was saying affected you.
‘’Since he met you.’’
Ransom’s answer came out sounding so sincere, it made your heart flutter. You wished he had kissed you then, but your friends came back and the moment had passed.
Your hands found each other again as you walked out of the fair and into the street.
‘’Where are you parked?’’ Emma asked, looking for your car.
‘’I took a cab, I didn’t drive.’’ You pulled out your phone with your free hand. ‘’There should be another one in about 15-20 minutes.’’
‘’Nah, come on. We’ll drive you home.’’ Jax offered.
‘’Or I can do it.’’ Ransom quickly added.
Emma smirked. ‘’We should let Ransom take her home, there’s no room in the backseat because of the panda.’’ She said as she looked at her boyfriend with big eyes that were saying ‘’let them leave together or I will hurt you’’.
‘’Oh, yeah. Right. Sorry, princess.’’
‘’It’s ok, thank you.’’ You smiled at him and looked at Ransom. ‘’Are you sure? I don’t mind waiting.’’
‘’I’m sure. We’ll have to walk a bit, but I’m driving you home.’’
‘’Ok then, thank you.’’
Emma and Jax had been lucky enough to park close to the fair and you waved at them as they sat in Jax’s car.
When they pulled away, Ransom looked down at you. ‘’Ready?’’
‘’Yes. Lead the way.’’
Ransom was parked a few streets away, but he wasn’t mad about it and neither were you. It gave you an opportunity to walk and hold hands for a little while longer. Though tonight had a rocky start, it was still a really good night.
‘’Are you happy you decided to come tonight?’’ Ransom asked when you spotted his car.
‘’I am.’’ You smiled at him and he smiled right back at you.
The street was empty, aside from a few stray cars but there was no one, no sound. It was peaceful.
You both stopped next to Ransom’s car while he pulled out his car keys from his pocket. You let go of his hand and stepped aside to let him unlock the door. You looked around while you waited but instead of hearing the door being unlocked and pulled open, you heard Ransom whisper ‘’fuck it’’ and before you had time to ask him what was wrong he had grabbed you by the hips and spinned you around, trapping you between his car and his body, your back resting on the side of his car.
‘’I wanted to wait, but I can’t wait anymore.’’
He pressed two fingers under your chin to slightly tilt your head back to have better access as he leaned in and he pressed his lips to yours. Both of your hands flew up to his chest and for a second Ransom thought you were going to push him away, but instead you grabbed him by the sweater and pulled him even closer, if it was possible. His hands moved to hold your hips, keeping you in place as he brushed his tongue over your bottom lip, silently asking to deepen the kiss. Which you gladly did, making him groan.
His hold on your hips tightened as the need for oxygen started to be too much.
You’re the one who broke the kiss, it felt like Ransom would have chosen to pass out instead of getting some much needed air back into his lungs.
You were both panting as you laid your hands flat on his chest, letting go of the fistfuls of his sweater.
‘’Damn, baby.’’ He chuckled, breathless. ‘’It was even better than I thought it was going to be, and I had big expectations.’’
You chuckled. ‘’I agree.’’ Your tongue peaked out to wet your lips and Ransom was quick to kiss them again.
He rested his forehead against yours, holding you as you both caught your breath. He moved one of his hands away from your hips and cupped your cheek, his thumb gently stroking your skin.
"It was about time." Ransom said, smiling.
"What?" You laughed quietly.
"I've been waiting for this for months."
"Really?" You asked, surprised.
"Since the night at the bar. Why did you think I came over and asked to join you girls?" It was his time to chuckle.
"Honestly? For the same reason guys usually do, because they are trying to get with Emma or Kelly." You shrugged.
"Nope. It was all about you."
You didn't know what to say to that, you weren't really used to being someone's first, and only choice. There was this little voice at the back of your head who kept saying "now he wants you, but he'll lose interest quickly like every other guy before him" and it scared you.
You usually take things slow with guys, you keep them at arm's length and you try to not get attached too rapidly but with Ransom it's complicated because you are friends. He has already weaseled his way into your life and it's too late to keep him at a distance.
When he'll get bored of you and leave, it'll hurt even more and it'll be even more humiliating.
"Hey." Ransom's soft voice pulled you out of your thoughts. "Where did you just go?" He looked at you, slightly frowning and clearly worried.
"Sorry." You gave him a small smile. "I'm just tired."
He could tell you were lying. "Did I do something or say something I shouldn't have? Am I coming on too strong? You can tell me."
"No, no. It's not you." You shook your head. "Don't worry."
He looked in your eyes, trying to see if he could find even the slightest clue of what's been going through your mind.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes." You smiled, this time you were a little more convincing. "Can we sit in the car? I'm freezing."
That was the truth, he could tell from the look in your eyes and the fact that you were shivering.
"Yes, let's get you home."
He moved to kiss you again but he wasn't sure if he should so instead he settled with kissing your forehead before stepping back to leave you enough space to pull yourself away from his car.
Your heart tugged a little when you saw him hesitate and again when he kissed your forehead.
See? He's already getting bored is all you could think as you sat in the passenger's seat.
The whole ride home, Ransom kept glancing at you unsure of what just happened. Maybe he did something wrong? Could he have misread the situation?
As he parked in front of your apartment building, he took a deep breath and turned to face you once the car was completely stopped.
‘’I’m sorry.’’ He said, looking at you.
You turned to face him, surprised by his words. Have you missed something? Why was he apologizing to you?
‘’Wh- What?’’
‘’I made you uncomfortable, I’m sorry. I thought you wanted me too, but you’re clearly regretting everything.’’
‘’I don’t regret anything. I’m just…’’ You sigh, trying to find the courage to tell him how you really feel. You averted your eyes, looking everywhere but in his eyes. ‘’I’m scared.’’ You finally admitted.
You quickly turned back around to face the front of the car and you stared in front of you, nervously fidgeting.
‘’Scared of what? Of me?’’ He sounded almost sad, disappointed even but not at you. At himself, for making you feel like he couldn’t be trusted.
You shook your head no but kept your eyes to the front. ‘’I’m scared of trusting people. It never ends well.’’
Ransom lifted his hand to your right cheek and cupped the side of your face, applying just a little bit of pressure to get you to look at him. Once you did, he brushed his thumb across your cheek.
‘’We’ll go slow, ok? If you want us to be together.’’ He smiled as you nodded shyly. ‘’I’m not going anywhere, I’ll show you that you can trust me.’’
You leaned into Ransom’s touch, making his heart jump in his chest.
‘’C’mere.’’ He whispered, leaning in closer to you.
You mirrored his action, feeling chills run down your spine when your lips met for the second time tonight. He moved his hand from your cheek to the back of your head, holding you close while he kissed you. He bit down gently on your bottom lip a few times before completely letting go of your lips as he left the both of you out of breath.
He leaned back in his seat to take a good look at you, his hand slid away from the back of your head, down your shoulder and ran down your arm until it was back to his side.
‘’Good night.’’ Ransom tilted his head to the side, looking at you with a devilish grin.
The tip of his tongue peeked from between his lips as he wet them, you stared a little longer than you would have liked before shaking your head and turning around to open the door. You smiled at him, wishing him a good night before getting out and closing the door.
You’re relieved that he didn’t try to walk you to your apartment, it would have been embarrassing if he saw where you lived, how it looked inside.
The next day, Ransom took you out on your first official date.
