i fucking love ben grimm. he's the character of all time. he's jewish. he's a new yorker. he's an astronaut. he's a street tough. he's a golem. he's the heart and soul of the fantastic four. he loves cigars, hoagies, and his sweet aunt petunia. he's best friends with she-hulk. he loves people. he wants to protect them, even when they're scared of him. he's always the last one to go down in a fight and the first one to get back up again. he can go toe to toe with the hulk. he sends a hanukkah letter to moon knight every year. a freaking elder of the universe realized that he'd never be able to beat him, never be able to actually break his spirit. and you know why? because he's the ever-lovin’ blue-eyed thing.

On this date in 1983, the ever-lovin' blue-eyed Thing jumped into his own solo title by John Byrne, Ron Wilson and Joe Sinnott. The title followed the long-running Marvel Two-In-One, which the Thing headlined along with another Marvel character for 100 issues.

The early issues of the Thing put the spotlight on Ben Grimm's history and humanity, and featured appearances by the Yancy Street Gang, the Inhumans, Puppet Master and more. And when the first Secret Wars hit, Ben would decide to stay behind on Battleworld, and the story morphed into something closer to science fiction or fantasy as he explored the planet the Beyonder had created.

The Thing lasted for 36 issues, and it wouldn't be until 2006 that Aunt Petunia's favorite nephew got another shot at a solo title.

peter pwease for the character ask game

ahh....the person brave enough to ask the peter guy about peter. step into my parlor.

one aspect about them i love

there's something peter says to flash thompson that basically describes one of my favorite things about spider-man: "you don't quit until ten minutes after you're dead!" like. my god. not "you don't quit until you drop dead" but, even after you're dead, you keep kicking and hitting and fighting tooth and nail. which is, of course, impossible. WHICH leads me to another line that encapsulates the same thing: thanos (long story) says to peter, "it's too late. you can't save anyone anymore. you're trying to do the impossible." for the record, peter is dead here. he's in a confrontation with thanos and Death after failing to save a little girl and, like, having a heart attack and dying. anyway, peter responds, "yeah? so what. so what?" peter has this unfathomable arrogance in the face of death and he has it on PURPOSE. he CHOOSES to look death in the face and say "so?" he's fucking crazy. he literally gets buried alive for two weeks and crawls out of the grave just because he wants to see his wife. what the hell is his problem

one aspect i wish more people understood about them

(concrete scraping) only one? ok. i wish people understood the Audacity he possesses more. i talk a lot about how i wish his anger issues weren't phased out of his character so often, but i think his sheer audacity goes hand-in-hand with that. this guy isn't socially anxious. in fact, it might be for the good of society at large if he was MORE socially anxious. half the reason peter is such a Figure in the vigilante game (from a watsonian perspective) is because since the jump he's been putting his foot down and telling people how things were going to go even if he had no right or position to do so. sometimes this makes him a jackass. sometimes this makes him one of the best of them

one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character

his teeth are pretty messed up because he couldn't afford to see the dentist as a kid and he doesn't feel like getting adult braces. he has Wife Merch that he wears in public and points to and goes Guess what? That's My Wife. Jealous? what else....... oh. NSAID painkillers (like ibuprofen) don't work on me so they don't work on him either.

hmmm........ ben grimm. the ever-lovin' blue-eyed thing probably reminds peter a lot of his uncle (older jewish guy named ben with a penchant for mischief). i don't think peter sees ben as a paternal figure or anything, i just think he appreciates his company and ben's always the one telling peter he's part of the family. i want them to hang out more and clobber people

he's definitely been on Talk Daredevil Down From Mania-Induced Behavior more than once. i know this happens, like, canonically, but the visual of peter trying his best to calm matt down and then sighing loudly and just cocooning him in a web and dragging him kicking and screaming back to foggy is very funny to me.They're buddies

August 28th - The Thing

Benjamin J. Grimm grew up in the tough Yancy Street neighborhood of Manhattan's Lower East Side.  His parents passed away when he was quite young and Ben was taken in by his kindly aunt, Petunia.  He went to Empire State University on a football scholarship where he was roommates with Reed Richards.  After graduation, Grimm joined the Air Force and became a combat pilot and, later, an astronaut.  

Grimm was recruited by his old friend Richards to pilot an experimental rocket into a cosmic radiation storm in outer space.  Grimm was opposed to the idea, warning that the ship's shielding might prove to be inadequate protection from the radiation.  And yet he agreed to pilot the mission because he knew Richards would go through with it regardless.  The pair were joined by Richard's girlfriend, Susan Storm, and her young brother, Johnny.

Passing through the cosmic radiation belt exposed them all to a strange mutagen that profoundly altered their physiology.  Grimm was transformed into a rock-like monster with incredible strength and durability.  The other three member of the crew were transformed and also bestowed super powers.  Yet, while the others were each able to revert to their original appearance, Grimm was stuck in his monstrous form.  

Richards convinced the others that they should use their new powers for the good of humanity as members of a team named the Fantastic Four. Richards called himself Mister Fantastic, Susan and Johnny Storm took the names of the Invisible Girl (later Invisible Woman) and the Human Torch; Grimm, morose over his new grotesque appearance, named himself ‘The Thing.”  Under Richards' leadership the Fantastic Four has become Earth's most honored team of superhuman adventurers and have saved the world from conquest or destruction on numerous occasions.

The Fantastic Four were not just Ben's friends, they became his surrogate family, and he was like a beloved uncle to Reed and Sue's children, Franklin and Valeria. He also often assisted his teammate Johnny during the young man's solo adventures.

All the while, Richards worked tirelessly to try to discover a means of returning Grimm to his human form.  These efforts sometimes succeeded for a short while but ultimately proved futile and Grimm has come to accept his fate as the ‘blue-eyed ever-lovin’ Thing’

As The Thing, Grimm would have countless adventures all over the world and throughout the cosmos.  Along with his participation with The Fantastic Four, The Thing has also been a member of The West Coast Avengers, The Defenders, The New Avengers, The Guardians of The Galaxy and The Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation.   

Grimm met the blind sculptress Alicia Masters early on in his career during an adventure where Alicia’s step-father, the villainous Puppet Master attacked the Fantastic Four.  Ben and Alicia would go on to have a tumultuous relationship for many years, mostly due to Ben’s unwillingness to accept that someone as gentle and kind as Alicia could ever love someone who looked the way he did.  Finally getting over himself, The Thing proposed marriage to Alicia and she accepted.  They were married and have recently found themselves acting as parental guardians to a pair of child alien warriors rescued from the Profiteer’s gladiatorial arena.  

The Thing has yet to appear in the marvel Cinematic Universe, but has featured in a number of Fantastic Four movies where the character was portrayed by actors Michael Bailey Smith, Michael Chiklis and Jamie Bell.

The Thing first appeared in the pages of Fantastic Four Vol. 1 #1 (1961).
