Hard like the fist of an angry god

The day felt cotton-like, the exhaustion constricting me like a snake its suffocating prey. The sun kept laughing at the shyness of autumn, the bright blue sky its mischievous ally. Only the rusty bits of the chestnut tree leafs, softly moving in the lukewarm wind, were testament to the unexpected radiance of this sunday-like Monday. I spent the morning heavily asleep in the roasted depths of the bed, only to come back to it in the midst of the afternoon when my eyelids felt heavy again, as the golden sun reached at its highest oblique. The cries of excited children, prisoners on leave on this special holiday, ricocheted on the quiet buildings around before dropping in the empty space of the bedroom like coins in the transparent water of an ancient fountain. I zoned out and zoned in, faking a fight against this much needed nap, until it really got to me and the sky had turned dusky purple, the buildings grey and the air around me atomised.

I can change position, sit at the table, lay on the couch, jump on the bed, stand by the sink, embrace my sister-friend, dive in my lady-love’s gaze but it will never precisely tell me where to look for the true me, although it will provide coordinates by proxy, the inverted self-image of a reverberated volume. The longest-run jokes, the slowest-walked strolls, the steepest-stalled markets, the richest-colored salads, the honest-heart conversations, all of this add to the exquisitely refined portrait of mine, one that I can only continue painting with lonely and shared time and love. There are also the silences, those who allow listening, or focusing, or creating. From my mouth-spring to my mouth-well, it is a loop on itself, a meaning-making spiral of letting go of scrapped pieces of past which still stick to my skin like unwanted old gum or like, for a few of them only, tiny grains of sand after a dreamt afternoon at the beach as a kid. It is however as much a spiral of building up this tower of my humble(-bragging) ego, the power to erect new ways, diagonals of learnt frames, as much as the pride to shine far away, sun-basking inside-out.

Life is brutal. You are raised to be moulded from these aspirations of others and from those you make up after them. The matter can only recover freedom when a lock was misplaced and popped open under the pressure of the creative flux, or when, in the midst of the now dry structure, a high opening is planned for a direct connection with nature to finally occur. Decades ago, as I felt utter joy springing through me while wheel-flying, I just stopped, threw my bike on the side and lied on the yellow grass: the puffy clouds were quickly moving across the charged sky, changing the direction of the few passing through rays. As if the earth was spinning around me, I was the well of love from which the beauty of this world erupted. Decades later, now become a superstructure of knowledge, I realize all the extraroom inside me, space that requires my attention and my care, a whole large bedroom where I can rest, and imagine, and plan, and build. Its window is wide and sheltered. Time paints the view but spares the viewer inside. Sacred is the hidden softness of one’s rebirth.
