Very attached to the idea that if Percy had been a woman she would have been named Ariadne. Like, I know that Persephone is a popular fanon name for female Percy because it's a nice way to keep her nickname. I've also seen Andromeda used by some because she lives a long life with Perseus in the myths. But Sally would have at least considered it right? Because Ariadne's a popular female figure in mythology, linked to both Theseus and Dionysus, two other famous figures in mythology. She was a clever mortal princess who was dealt a bad hand because her father's arrogance allowed him to think that he could get away with defying a god, just like how Poseidon's arrogance allowed him to think that he could get away with breaking the pact he made with Zeus and Hades. And in the end, Ariadne survived both her family's legacy and Theseus's abandonment, becoming Dionysus's immortal wife in both the PJO universe and in many retellings of the myth of the Minotaur and Theseus in real life. Ariadne got to live out her happy ending just like how Perseus did in mythology, which is the main reason why Sally even gave Percy the name Perseus to begin with. Am I delusional to think that Sally would have given a female Percy the name Ariadne? Who the fuck knows. But I'm so attached to the idea that it literally just supersedes any other name I could have come up with

Percí hadn't meant to pseudo-adopt the homeless kid that lived in her garbage can. And, now that she was thinking about it, she had never meant to adopt a kid at all. Her family was crazy enough. They didn't need her to continue the bloodline, no matter how much her father pestered. Besides, who would she copulate with? All of her friends were hooked up - except Nico but even she could see the thing he had for Will. Thus, she had come to the conclusion that she'd take up the mantle of crazy cat lady. And she'd already gotten started! Well, actually, Mrs O'Leary was a dog but that was a technicality. Anyway, back to her Incredibly Important Point. She did not want to have/adopt any kids. But...
The kid had been injured. Clearly he was getting kicked around and damn her, she had a soft heart. Gabe had done the same thing to her but, in this case, the kid didn't have a mother willing to commit murder. At least, Percí didn't think he did. So, on the fourth night that he chose to sleep on her garbage, she threw on a bathrobe and slipped Anaklusmos into her pocket. Then she went to introduce herself.
The kid was more injured than she had thought. He looked sickly, his bones were thin, bruises littered his face. Someone was definitely kicking this kid around. Percí cursed her hero-thing and nudged the kid. He must've been really out of it cause he didn't budge nor wake. She stares at the clouds like Zeus would give her some answer. Then she slid her arms around the kid and brought him inside. He was thin. Thinner than Nico, and Nico survived on pomegranates and grapes. Percí settled the kid on her couch then searched her thoughts. What would Mom do?
Percí grinned and moved into her kitchen to grab the bruise salve. Will had designed it for Rachel after the redhead had sword played with Percí and gotten a concussion for the fifth time. To be fair, Percí had gone easy on her. Mortals were just built like eggs. Either way, it'd work fine for the kid. He looked to be about twelve - which only made her want to help more - and was already on his way to becoming what one of the Aphrodite kids would call a 'heartbreaker'.
That being said, they called her a 'heartbreaker' and she wasn't even dating anyone!
Anyway, the kid. He was muscular for a preteen. Black hair windswept to one side. A pale face with a strong jaw. He was lean and tall and his torso looked like hell. She sighed and applied the salve, gently bandaging what had to be bruised ribs - if not broken. When she finished, she went back into the kitchen and dialled a familiar number. The phone beeped and Percí left what was most likely not the most disturbing message Sally Jackson had ever gotten. "Hey, mom. I kidnapped a kid and you're now a grandmother. If he doesn't run away, I'll bring him by for the holidays. Love you."
Then Percí did the healthy thing. She turned on her coffee machine and prepared herself for a long night of keeping watch, downing caffeine, and cursing the gods!
The kid woke up around three in the morning. Percí took a sip from her coffee to mask her reaction to the kids electric blue eyes. Eyes that were eerily similar to Jason. Dammit, Zeus, what'd you do now? The kid watched her warily then examines the bandages with narrowed eyes.
"Who the fuck are you?" the kid asked.
Potty mouth, Percí noted. "You can call me Blue," she responded, her New York accent clashing gently with his Midwestern one. "And you?"
"Kon-El," he replied, as if in habit before wincing. "I mean, uh, Conner."
Percí smirked. "Well, Conner, care to tell me why I found you passed out in my garbage?"

Gender-bent Percy Jackson!
I thought it would be funny if Sally and Poseidon had named female Percy after the princess Perseus saved, Andromeda. 🤣

Reading Percy Jackson
Posted another chapter of Reading the Books!
Hades: Stay out of my domain.
Percy, straight face: Uncle, I would never enter in your domain.
A few moments later
Percy, with an hamburger and a coca cola: So, uncle, you'd never guess what happened today.
A very tired Hades: I am not paied enough for this.

Terrible Fic Idea #88: Percy Jackson, but make it Ptolemaic
Since I inexplicably seem to have fallen back into the PJO fandom, my plan for this terrible fic idea was to expound upon the fluff hinted at in #87... but once again got derailed as my mind dredged up a fic idea I'd long ago discarded as being too terrible.
Or: What if, instead of hating his demigod half-sibling at first sight, Triton fell in love with them instead?
Just imagine it:
Everything happens according to canon, with two exceptions: 1) Sally Jackson gives birth to a daughter, who she names Andromeda; and 2) Zeus' lightening bolt is not stolen until the summer Andy is set to turn 15, which means she never faces a Fury while on a field trip to a museum, which means Grover and Chiron never realize she's a demigod who needs to be taken to camp.
Because of this, Sally is not able to get rid of Smelly Gabe with Medusa's head the summer Andy would turn 13. In fact, she's forced to double down on the relationship, thinking his scent is the only thing keep her little girl safe-
-which Sally very much comes to regret the year Andy turns 14, when puberty starts turning her from an awkward, coltish child into someone who will clearly become a beautiful woman. The looks Gabe starts sending her daughter's way during Thanksgiving Break are enough for Sally to start drawing up divorce paperwork, but these things take time and Andy is forced to spend Winter Break mostly alone in Gabe's apartment with Sally working double shifts to make ends meet.
The first time Gabe makes a pass at Andy, every single pipe in the apartment bursts - and when he comes at her a few minutes later, thinking it was her idea of a prank, the water seems to trip Gabe and hold him down until he drowns in the three inches of water on their kitchen floor.
Naturally, Andy is freaked out in every possible way by the time Sally makes it home. Sally is equally worried, with a double dose of guilt for bringing someone who'd try to assault her daughter into their home and not getting rid of him sooner once she realized what he was capable of. She realizes that she has no choice but to take Andy to CHB.
Camp Half-Blood is a little different than the books - more small polis than summer camp, with each of the major gods having their own compound within the camp where their children and those of related gods reside. (i.e., the children of various water nymph and water deities, along with a handful of water nymphs themselves, have a compound on the waterfront, which would be headed by the oldest child of Poseidon, if there was one).
Andy is immediately assumed to be the child of a river god because of what happened with the pipes - likely Asopus, who has a history of intervening on behalf of his daughters - and not a particularly powerful one, otherwise she'd have been identified long before her 14th birthday when Chiron taught at her school. The thought of her being a child of the Big Three never enters anyone's mind.
And so Andy, slightly more traumatized with slightly lower self-esteem, finds herself living at camp full time, believing herself to be the daughter of an undetermined minor water deity.
Enter Triton.
He doesn't set out to fall in love with a mortal. In fact, Triton's first instinct when he hears the gossip about Andy is one of irritation at his father for being a little too interested in the affairs of a pretty demigod. He decides to check out the situation and see if it can't be headed off at the pass.
Triton first sees Andy alone one the beach in the moonlight and immediately understands why any number of beings would risk her presumed father's wrath to gain a sliver of her attention. He finds himself drawn to her, coming back night for a week until he finally works up the nerve to approach her - and rather than run away, Andy invites him to join her wave watching.
Their friendship begins slowly - Andy is somewhat leery of men after her experience with Gabe, but a male water spirit seems safer to be around than some of the older campers - but grows startlingly quickly, especially after Triton starts teaching her how to protect herself with both her powers and the trident she found in the armory. By the time June rolls around, Andy can safely call Triton the best friend she's ever had.
But then the situation with Zeus' bolt heats up. Andy is claimed, sent on a quest, and prevents a war. And somewhere along the way she learns the water spirit that's been flirting with her - who gifted her a necklace with his own symbol, to protect her if anyone tried to repeat Gabe's actions - is her half-brother.
Being mortal and having mortal morals, Andy naturally finds this uncomfortable. But the problem is Triton is really has become her dearest friend and probably the only guy she feels comfortable enough around to even consider dating. Triton, being a god, doesn't have nearly the number of hangups Andy has with the revelation - though he is rather peeved with his father for breaking his oath and potentially dooming them all.
This situation goes on for a while.
Meanwhile, we speed run through the next few quests, with SoM, TTC, and BotL all happening in the nine months immediately following Andy's 15th birthday. Only instead of being sent to Ogygia after blowing up Mount St. Helens, Andy lands at Triton's summer home in the Mariana Islands and things between them come to a head. Dealer's choice on the details, Andy eventually decides her feelings for Triton will never change, so she might as well be happy with him rather than hurt them both apart.
And so Andy and her immortal half-brother start dating on the DL.
TLO happens as per canon, the only difference being that Nico - Andy's adoptive baby brother - not Annabeth is her tie to mortality. Despite her new relationship with Triton, Andy still refuses godhood to ensure demigods are recognized by their parents.
It's not until Juno kidnaps Andy that Olympus and CHB learn of her relationship with Triton. The campers naturally find this uncomfortable, and it taints the perceptions Piper, Jason, and Leo have of her when they arrive.
(Poseidon is actually quite pleased by the news, and it should be suggested he waited as long to claim Andy as he did because he knew of Triton's visits to her and didn't want to scare her off something that could make both his children so happy.)
SoN follows canon, although the conch necklace Andy arrives wearing lead most to think her a granddaughter of Neptune rather than an actual daughter, though her treatment is the same regardless. This should lead to all the awkwardness when Andy regains her memories and admits to Frank and Hazel that Triton isn't her father, as they assumed, but her lover.
Andy begins her ascent to godhood in Tartarus when she takes control of Akhlys' poison. In her halfway state she's able to defeat Polybotes on her own, which propels her to full godhood. Her domains leave her something of the aquatic equivalent of Pan, with her ability over poison coming from her ability to clean polluted waters.
CHB and CJ are never quite sure what to make of Andromeda, the ascended goddess that each knew for a time. Though a superb fighter, she never really fit into either camp - a little too withdrawn because of her traumas for CHB, too untamable for CJ. She's respected, but not beloved as she might have been had she started camp earlier. In the end, her story becomes warning about the dangers of catching the eye of a god, as revisionist as that history is.
Bonuses include:
For all Andy loves her mother, her relationship with Sally never quite recovers after Gabe's attempted assault. For all she understands her mother's reasoning in marrying him, she never can quite forgive her for bringing such a monster into their lives. Though she honestly, truly tries, Andy never feels safe enough around mortal men to return home during the school year or form a real relationship with her new stepfather, Paul. She leaves the mortal world behind long before attaining godhood, preferring monsters she can recognize and kill to mortals.
Andy always being considered the odd one out at camp for forming closer relationships with nature spirits than other campers. Her relationship with Annabeth is never as close as in the books - more Gilmore Girls Paris and Rory rivalry than genuine friendship - while her friendship with Grover and Chiron is always tainted by the fact they never realized she was a demigod and thus forced her to endure two more years of Smelly Gabe. Nico is the one exception to this, with Andy declaring herself Nico's ersatz older sister the moment Bianca joins the Hunt; and
Everything about PJO being aged up accordingly, including the myths. None of the stories are sanitized, and so part of camp is being forced to come to terms with the often awful things the Gods (their parents/uncles/cousins) have done - as well as the awful things many demigods (their siblings/cousins) have done historically.
...And that's all I have. Despite the will they/won't they tension being largely glossed over in this outline, that's where I see the bulk of the drama (and thus the fic) coming from, but what can you do? Anyway, feel free to adopt this bun, just link back if you ever do anything with it.

Percy: "Mum...?"
Sally: "What's wrong, Sweetie?"
Percy: Me. "Nevermind..."
Sally: walks closer to her biological child then stops, standing in front of the 13-year-old with the adult's arms spread.
Sally: "Is it okay if I hug you, Percy?"
Percy: throws her arms around her mother, who returns the embrace then their cuddle ends a moment later.
Sally: places her hands on her kid's shoulders "You know that you can tell me anything, right?"
Percy: "...If I had been born a girl, what would you have named me?"
Sally: confused "A girl?"
Percy: steps backwards a few times, her mum's hands falling off the teen's shoulders "Nevermind."
Sally: "Percy, if you had been a girl instead of a boy, I would have named you Psyche. There was a Greek princess long ago. She endured despite all the hardships and found happiness, much like Perseus did."
Percy: frowns Nancy and other bullies would've called me Psycho for sure.
Sally: "Percy, what's on your mind?"
Percy: "It's nothing, Mum."
Percy: goes into her bedroom.
Percy a week later: "Mum, I'm a girl."
Sally (who had done research after what to her had been a strange conversation with her "son"): "Thank you, Percy, for trusting me. Do you want to change your name?"
Percy: "Wait, that's it? You believe me?"
Sally: holds her arms wide.
Percy: hugs her mum who returns the embrace.
Sally: "You're my daughter. Of course I trust you to tell me the truth."
Percy: silently cries against her mum's upper chest.
Sally: "Do you want to keep Percy as your name or choose a new one?"
Percy: "Both. I wanna replace Perseus with something that's pretty and can easily be shortened to Percy."
Sally: "How about Persephone?"
Percy: "Wasn't she kidnapped?"
Sally: "...Maybe not Persephone. But you didn't seem to like the name Psyche last week."
Percy: "Mum, do you know any other names?"
Sally: "There is Percilla. It's from the Latin word priscus, meaning venerable."
Percy: grins "Perfect!! Thank you, Mum!!"

Dear Fanfiction writers, If you want to do a female Percy Jackson Fanfiction or a Percy Jackson's sister fanfiction, for fuck's sake, stop calling her Persephone? Must I remind you, that Sally Jackson named Percy "Perseus" because he was one of the few greek heroes, who had a happy ending? Do you really believe she would go:" My son? Oh, I'm gonna name him after one of the few heroes survived in hopes that he will have a happy ending himself" just so she can go like two seconds later "Well, my daughter? How about naming her after the goddess that was kidnapped by the god of the underworld and was forced to marry him and is probably really unhappy about this, because this way, she can't see her mother, who she dearly loved, in one third of the year. Yeah, a brilliant idea. Let's hope she won't end this way!" Like, common. That doesn't make sense. And please, don't come at me like:" This isn't true, I've read in this and that retelling, that she went down there by her own will and-" Shut up.
I don't know if this is true. But even in the books of Rick Riordan it is clear, that she was kidnapped so we go along with this in this universe.
Why can't you name her after a person, that actually had a happy ending? What about Ariadne? I know, that she had quite a shitty life for some time, but in the end, she married the man she loved and even became a goddess! And can you imagine the face of Dionysus when he realises that the sister of this annoying child is named after his wife? Would he pissed or would he have a little soft spot for her, because she acts so much like her and could be Ariadne's daughter? Or Psyche. I mean, she too had a rough life ( What hero didn't) but she too had her kind of happy ending. She too became a goddess, married the man she loved ( at least in the versin of the myth Riordan chose) and her name even starts with a P. Or use a name of one of the muses. Just, stop with this persephone thing. Please, after what feels like thousands of fanfics it starts to become boring.

So pjo Fandom,
A question and a protential story/AU idea. FREETO USE
1. Does anyone know any fanfiction where percy(either regular male or female) comes to camp early and/or alongside other campers? I know one where a female percy is the third on the run with thalia and luke instead of annabeth.
Other protential campers I honestly would like to see are campers like silena and Charles or the stoll brothers.
Mayhaps campers like with no known background like Evette and Dennis?
Or maybe Ethan nakamura and Chiara Benvenuti?

a story as endless as the ocean
the titan's curse
0.0 prologue
warnings : a lot of underage drinking, mentions of a club, mentions of a pretty toxic work environment, monster attack, allie kinda has a breakdown at the end
word count : 3.2k
Tumblr media Tumblr media
early december, a club in new york city.
“Where are you?” Danny demanded over the phone the moment the call connected.
I looked around at the mass amount of people around me. “... Nowhere?”
I could hear Danny scoff over the call, despite the blaring music from speakers around the club I was standing in. “Was that a question or an answer?”
“... An answer?”
Instead of a scoff, this time it was a sigh. “You’re out drinking again, aren’t you?”
I paused. “I’m inclined to lie to you, just so you have plausible deniability if I ever get caught and kicked out and/or arrested for underage drinking.”
I wasn’t really sure when I’d decided going out drinking was the best course of action for the night.
To be honest, I should’ve known better than to let my friends take me out. I should’ve known better than to let my guard down. I should’ve known better than to think everything would be okay.
I should’ve known better.
My night had been shitty well before the end of it. I had locked myself in my at-home studio about six days prior, refusing to be dragged out and only allowing Danny in to bring me water bottles and food. With album finalizations due by the end of the month and three songs still needing to be written and two needing to be produced, I’d decided the best way to finish things up as quickly as possible (mostly in order to have more time to fix any mistakes and make everything perfect) was to lock myself in my room and forbid myself from coming out until everything was finished.
To the surprise of many (read: Danny), it was actually working. The two songs that needed to be produced had been finished, and I was pretty satisfied with two of the songs I’d written, but things hit a bit of a roadblock whenever I’d gotten to the last song. Normally I was pretty good at being able to write lyrics to an already-produced song, but this one was… different.
No matter how much I ingrained each cord into my brain, no song lyrics could come to the forefront of my mind. There was no way only three albums into my music career I’d run out of things to say, right?
Well, that wasn’t exactly fair. I had a lot I felt like I needed to say, but most of it had to do with the Greek side of my life— the side I wasn’t really allowed to mention while out in public. Plus, how many times could I curse out the gods before they finally realized I wasn’t just singing in hypotheticals?
I wasn’t sure what exactly Danny had told my group of outside-world friends, but they’d managed to drag me from my self-imposed lockdown when they mentioned that our friend, Minnie, was in town. She was a K-Pop Idol and hardly had any time to be in the States with us, but she just so happened to be in between comebacks and had a little bit of time off to spend in her home state. Since I didn’t know when I’d get to see her next, I hadn’t put up much of a fight. Plus, I kinda needed the drink.
I had simply… forgotten to tell Danny where I was going. So when he arrived back at my at-home studio to check on me and bring me dinner, all he found was an empty desk chair and a pile of trashed pieces of paper containing failed lyrics.
“Are you at least out with the girls?” Danny finally asked, in a small bit of silence between songs.
I nodded, even though I knew he couldn’t see me. “They’ll keep me safe. Plus, I know my limits.”
His silence told me everything I knew he wouldn’t say aloud to me. “Just be safe. If you aren’t back here by three, I’m coming to get you and the girls. Take care of them, too.”
Aside from the fact that Danny had my location tracked through Find My Friends and Life360, I knew he would be able to find me because I always went to the same club— it was the only one I knew I’d be able to drink at without being 21 and knew I wouldn’t get caught by paparazzi.
“I will. Talk to you later.”
Danny sighed one final time. “You better.”
Without another thought, I ended the call, taking no note of the extra beep at the end of it, which would’ve alerted me that the monster protection on the phone needed to be strengthened.
“That Danny?”
I nodded at Tori, grabbing the shot of whatever that she offered me. “Of course. He’s always assuming I’m getting myself into trouble.”
She snorted. “Well, you are in a club underage drinking. I think that maybe might constitute ‘getting yourself into trouble’.”
I took the shot and gave her a raised eyebrow. “Technically speaking, you, Rena, and Minnie brought me out here, so I don’t think that should apply to getting myself into trouble.” I paused, taking a sip of a margarita that Minnie, who’d joined us at the bar, slid me. “Besides, I can drink circles around you guys.”
“Oh, you wanna bet?!”
***
I think it was by the time they played my song all-american bitch for the third time that I finally realized I was hitting my limit. Or. Well. Maybe I had hit my limit two shots ago, when I was still insisting I could keep going despite all of my friends tapping out.
Should’ve known better.
Tori had long since joined the dance floor with a random guy (she’d ignored my obnoxious call of “make sure he signs an NDA!”), Rena had left a few minutes prior, her girlfriend waiting to pick her up outside the club once she’d realized her social battery was quickly running out, and Minnie was still stuck beside me at the bar, her company-mandated dating ban keeping her from finding company other than me.
I pouted, my arms crossed over my chest. “I don’ wanna go on a blind date.”
Minnie huffed into her cup of plain Coke. “But you don’t date anyone, Alls. Like, I don’t get how you can write all these songs about boys breaking your heart and love when you haven’t had a kiss outside of your acting roles.”
“Hey,” I complained, sitting up a little to grab the cup of water I’d finally decided on getting instead of another Moonshine Mule. “I’ll have you know I’ve kissed plenty of boys without it having to do with work.”
“How many of those were while you’d been drinking?”
I sputtered out a sound of objection. “You make me sound like an alcoholic!”
“Alls, come oooooon! Tae’s really sweet. You’d really get along with him, and he thinks you’re really pretty and your music is incredible. Which, he’s not wrong, but still.”
I rolled my eyes, but didn’t shoot back a response immediately. Truthfully, it had been a while since I’d gotten myself involved with someone. Of course, I knew why. There was a very large elephant in the room in the form of Luke. We were friends. But we also both knew that what we had went a hell of a lot further than friends. I wasn’t taken, but I was also, like, pretty much a step away from married.
But that also had its own problem: I couldn’t exactly tell my real-world friends about Luke. Because telling them about Luke meant telling them about how I’d met him, and where. It’s not like I couldn’t just tell them a lie, but they were close friends of mine. I didn’t want to lie straight to their faces. Lying by omission was much easier. Especially when I knew the truth would never get out unless I wanted it to.
“If you think Tae is sooo sweet, you should just date him,” I finally replied.
Minnie frowned. “Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t. You know that.”
I grimaced. I probably shouldn’t have said it— Minnie always got really touchy over the subject of her dating ban. I was lucky with my career in that, I was so well established that I could date whoever I wanted with little to no repercussions coming as a result. Maybe a couple of angry fans here or there, but nothing Earth-shattering. Minnie not only had the dating ban, but there was also the looming threat that coming across as taken in her industry could possibly mean the end of her career. When she was still a trainee, only dreaming of being able to debut, she’d had a boyfriend— her high school sweetheart. When that contract holding the dating ban had been slapped in front of her, she thought she’d be able to hide it. They would sneak around, but ended up getting caught by cameras one night. Her company had paid the news site off to keep it hidden, but she’d been forced to break up with her boyfriend. She hadn’t been able to talk to him since.
I sighed. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have brought it up. I know it makes you sad.”
Minnie sniffled a little, but didn’t let any tears fall. Finally, she looked up and gave me a small smile. “It’s alright, Alls. You know I just want you to be happy, right?”
“‘Course,” I replied. “I want the same for you, too.”
We sat in silence for a few moments, letting the sounds of Usher’s Yeah! fill our ears.
Finally, I chugged the rest of my water and sat up. “I think I need to head back to my studio.”
Minnie’s face brightened. “Yeah? Are you ready to go? I think I’m gonna head out, too.”

Minnie had wanted to wait for Danny to get there to pick me up, but I’d insisted she go ahead and get back to her hotel room. Her ride had gotten there much sooner than Danny due to how close her hotel was, but she told me she wasn’t above making him wait. I knew she wasn’t bluffing, but I also knew Minnie was getting to the end of her energy. We’d drank a lot, and I knew she’d be out like a light soon, in a bed or not.
I made sure I was sharing my location with her and she’d begrudgingly crawled into the car, waving as the car started driving.
When she was out of sight, I sighed and pulled my coat closer to myself. The December air was unforgiving and the wind caused by the tall New York skyscrapers didn’t help any.
The drunken yelling of men from across the street set my fight or flight off. I wasn’t sure if they were directing their calls at me, or if they were just being loud in general, but I figured it would be best to not find out. I didn’t want to stray far, but finding a hiding spot nearby wouldn’t be too bad, right?
My first step forward hit me like a truck.
While talking to Minnie, I could push aside the feeling of the alcohol flowing through my system, but now that the only thing I could concentrate on was how cold it was, it seemed my competitive drinking from earlier was ready to hit me with a vengeance.
I huffed out a breath, the air fogging as it left my lips. With a determined step forward, I stumbled over to the mouth of an alleyway, holding myself up against the wall as I willed away the feeling of sickness that was creeping up my throat.
Just when I thought my stupidity had to have met its only consequences, the world decided it was going to show me real bad luck.
A growl rumbled through the air.
My head shot up, sending another wave of nausea through me.
I was in no shape to fight. The world around me was spinning enough as it was. The cold was making my fingertips numb. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to hold a sword, much less swing it.
I looked further down the alleyway. Two glimmering red eyes shone toward the back. A Hellhound.
Even with the alcohol flowing through my veins, I knew I couldn’t let it leave the confines of the alley. I couldn’t let it get out in the open where the mortals could be put in danger. Of course, they wouldn’t see it for what it was, but that didn’t mean they wouldn’t be in harm’s way.
I’d only come into contact with a Hellhound up close and personal once. When I was seventeen and still in my first few days at camp, one had been summoned into the borders of camp to attack me. I’d gotten my chest clawed open before I was carried into the water to be healed. I wasn’t exactly looking forward to meeting another.
I took unsteady steps forward, bringing a trembling hand up to my neck where Riptide, my first sword, sat in necklace form. Pressing the diamond hanging from the chain would spring it into sword form, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do that yet. Even though I’d taken a few steps forward, the Hellhound hadn’t moved an inch. Maybe it was hoping I wouldn’t do anything and would just walk toward my death with no fight.
Finally, I stopped a few paces away from where it was still standing, not moving an inch. A low growl settled in its throat, making goosebumps rise on my arms for reasons other than the chill in the air.
I should’ve known better. I shouldn’t have drank so much. Every limb on my body felt like it was treading water every time I needed to move them. How was I supposed to fight like this?
My hand was still curled around the gem of Riptide.
In an instant, the Hellhound settled back on its hind legs and jolted, as though it was going to jump at me.
My shot nerves caused me to overreact and, with a stumble, I ended up on the ground.
The pain didn’t hit me. My eyes couldn’t leave the beast in front of me, getting in position to lunge at me for real this time. Trying to scramble back in my drunkenness was difficult, and even though adrenaline was pulsing through my veins, it still felt like my reaction time was seconds behind.
Finally, the Hellhound had enough of playing with its food and lunged. I rolled out of the way, summoning Riptide once I was on my knees.
The Hellhound skidded on the ground, its claws making a grating noise against the asphalt as it did, and turned back toward me with a growl. It tensed at the sight of the celestial bronze of Riptide, but seemed to know that I was off my A-game and if it tried a little harder would get an easy snack.
My chest heaved. For a moment, I actually doubted I’d be able to get myself out of this one.
I finally got to my feet, trying not to fall back down when my knees shook with the exertion.
The Hellhound swatted at me with one of its large paws, but I was able to keep it away from me with Riptide.
It advanced toward me, slower this time. I backed up with it, until my back touched the wall.
It was now or never. I was only going to be able to fight off the effects of the alcohol for so long and the longer I took to fight back, the more likely it was that I was going to lose this fight.
When it got close enough, this time I braced myself against the wall. Steadying myself, all I could think about was making it through this fight. Once I won, I could break down.
With a final growl, the Hellhound lunged.
I used the wall to push off of as I went toward the ground once more, this time prepared to do so as I came face-to-face with the belly of the monster. Without another thought, and before it could come down on my legs and trap me, I thrust my sword up and into its stomach.
It howled in pain, but wasn’t a strong enough monster to fight the deadly effects of celestial bronze. As the blood-curdling howl cut through the air, the Hellhound crumbled into golden dust.
I panted as I sat there for a moment, the dust falling on my head like confetti.
“Allie?”
The sound of my name made my breath hitch. Because it wasn’t Danny’s voice I heard, it was—
“Luke?” I called back, my voice strained.
He appeared at the mouth of the alleyway like a guardian angel brought to save me. My breath hitched.
I struggled to my feet for what would hopefully be the last time that night.
He walked toward me as I stumbled toward him. My heel caught on a rock and I almost tumbled back to the ground, but Luke caught me. Like always.
His skin was warm despite him not wearing anything other than a hoodie I’d gotten him for his birthday and some jeans. He always ran warmer than I did.
“Danny called me a few hours ago saying he was sending a car to come get me. Something about you being really stressed? Are you okay?” he said, bringing a hand up to shake the golden dust off of my hair.
I shook my head. “I drank too much,” I replied pitifully. “And the Hellhound— I didn’t think— it really scared me. And I can’t think of this stupid song. And I haven’t gotten any sleep for— for like a week. And— and I drank too much.”
Once all of the dust was out of my hair, he kept his hand there, smoothing the loose strands as a way to soothe me. “Shh, hey, Angel, it’s alright. You’re okay. I’ve got you.”
As he pulled me closer, letting me rest my head against his chest, I finally broke down, his words letting me know I was safe to do so.
“It’s okay, baby. You’re alright,” he continued, slowly rocking me back and forth, still petting my head.
“I wanna go home,” I whispered tearfully, clutching the material of his hoodie in my fists.
He nodded, pressing a kiss on the top of my head and keeping his lips there as he said, “Okay, Angel. We can go home.”
