#feral opress headcanons
Note
Oh great Wishmonger - I'm curious. What were the bros like when pursuing an intended mate when they were just starting out? Before Savage was magically enhanced? Before Maul's fall on Naboo? Before Feral had his first kiss? Not necessarily a first time in bed - just how did they show interest Before the galaxy cruelly shaped them into their deadliest selves?
I struggled with this one a bit, I'll be honest, anon -- I try to respond to the fantasy often but there are occasions where the headcanon is so strong that it sometimes makes it prohibitive.
Permit me to explain myself, and apologies if this wasn't what you were hoping for:
I think "mate" is a very strong term that imparts significance to a zabrak's chosen partner -- not to serve some biological imperative, because it's free of sex or gender -- but because it implies a connection that's deeper than boyfriend/girlfriend/significant other/partner/wife/husband/in singular or plural. A "mate" is someone to whom their soul is connected. It's forever.
Given what we know of Maul's upbringing under Sidious, even and especially if we considered Wrath as canon, he would not have had that opportunity. His Master's Grand Plan was too deeply inculcated. He had a purpose and he was forged for that mission alone -- and even if he had met his soul's connection in some dingy alley in the depths of an ecumenopolis somewhere, or on a prison satellite, or at an auction where he might've met his enemy for the first time, or top of a reactor shaft where he nearly lost his life... he wouldn't have recognized that flicker between him and another being that sparked recognition, and if he did, he wouldn't know what it meant. The don't call it "the Tragedy of Darth Maul" for nothing.
As for Savage and Feral, selecting a mate wasn't an option for them. They were chosen by Nightsisters as breeding stock, their candidacy determined through brutal Selection to determine the most viable Nightbrother partners. (I don't like the Nightsisters much for various reasons, but this is definitely one of them.) If we assume that Nightbrothers had any agency whatsoever, their relationships were with each other, and those connections were fleeting, given the precedent. I don't think many Nightbrothers had the opportunity to pair off with their hearts' chosen, and if they were among the clans, then the risk of losing them because of the Nightsisters government is practically a given. And I don't want to think about what it means for two people to be torn apart like that. (I mean, yes I do because the side of my work that I don't often share on this blog is driven by angst and I think there's a good story there, but it causes me pain when paired with Feral and Savage in particular, and I will fiercely protect their hearts from anyone who tries to break them.)
"But what if they could?" you're asking. "What if we re-wrote the history completely?"
Fine, then. Have it your way.
Feral would likely do something outlandish, like carving your name into the bare patch of skin over his hearts with diluted hydraatis acid to declare how very serious he is about courting you
Savage would come by your hut every day, morning, noon, and night to escort you everywhere so everyone in the village understands his claim, bringing you little trinkets that he's made for you. It's a task because you know he was keeping one eye on his little brother (doing stupid things with corrosive materials, as previously mentioned.)
Maul will drop the carcass of your enemies on your doorstep to prove his commitment and declare his intentions towards you. The bigger and more deadly they are, the greater his sentiments.

Purring headcanons
Maul: Only purrs when around his brothers, but is pretty reluctant to purr at all. The small moments he does allow himself to do so, it's low, quiet, and broken up due to a lack of use.
Feral: PURRS ALL THE TIME- doesn't really matter who he's around. He's Zabrak, proud of it, and when he's content he will show it. The pitch is higher, rougher than his brothers, but very relaxing.
Savvy: Is less strict about the people he purrs around in comparison to Maul, but doesn't do it as often as Feral. He's choosy. When he does, it's DEEP, loud, and rumbly. He's a living massage chair.

StarWars/Maul Headcanon (I will not write this, it does nothing besides amuse me, but if someone does plz God lmk I will read it 10000x): if Maul were ever (unwillingly) reunited with his entire immediate biological family (Kycina, not Talzin, cos VOM, + whoever the fuck Dad is & the bros opress), he would become instantly, furiously, BITTERLY aware that he is at least six inches shorter than everyone else including Mom, and would reject them all immediately based on that alone.
Bonus points if there is a younger female sibling who has not yet hit puberty and can look him dead in the eye.

Random headcanon I think the Feral that Savage killed was a fake created with magic or something. It makes no sense to me for Mother Talzin end her own bloodline so easily just to help an estranged nightsister get revenge on Dooku. Even if they're not actually her sons, they are still Maul's blood, potentially powerful Force users. She was already sending one of them away on a purpose he would likely not return from, why kill the other and destroy a promising family.

How strong are the Nightbrother's physically before and after their infusion with ichor?
Your ask implies what happened to Savage Opress in the aftermath of his Selection was a common practice but I don't think that's the case.
TW: Oppression (Nightsisters), violent death (Feral's)
Ventress and Talzin had a very specific agenda to get revenge against Dooku, and they needed a tool that would be powerful enough in the Force to be considered an acceptable offering by Sith/Dark Acolyte standards, but loyal to them, hence Savage's conditioning (which is why Feral's murder was the final test of Savage's devotion, because if he'd been in his full faculties, he wouldn't have snapped the neck of his beloved brother. Think about that for a second: Feral wasn't choked to death. His spine was broken one-handed. That's not an effortless death.)
I suspect that the Nightsisters aren't so generous unless it serves their ends specifically, because not only was Savage's size, strength, and speed bolstered, but he was also given an ichor-infused weapon (a pike made by some variety of conjuration), and presumably his armour was also enchanted (because it evanesced at the time of his death along with the changes made to his body.)
For the before and after aspect of your ask, things are going to get a bit more speculative from here out because of the details introduced by Ahsoka about the Witch Kingdom of the Dathomiri, and specifically what physiological differences exist between Dathomirian and Iridonian zabrak, and their consistencies.
To date I've assumed that there are similarities between the two species, as both Dathomirian and Iridonian zabrak are warrior cultures familiar to the often brutal conditions of their homeworlds, but Dathomirian zabrak also have the misfortune of suffering the harsh conditions of living beneath their oppressors. I think Nightbrothers were largely self-sustaining and share similar values with ancient warrior-centric civilizations (Sparta comes to mind, as two-second answers go, but this is a tangent) which might've influenced how they trained and fought and lived as a brotherhood.
Apart from the standard: faster, harder, more acrobatic, more resilient, more resistant to pain than humans, how much of that comes from biology and evolution and how much is a product of their aptitude to survive against all odds is up to you to hash out with the new information we're getting.
The tl;dr is that I think Nightbrothers were a hard people whose values allowed them to survive some pretty shitty conditions, but their circumstances didn't allow them to thrive, and there isn't a Nightsister out there who, with an instinct for maintaining the status quo, would give their power to the people they've enslaved.
I do think about what might happen if the Nightbrothers gained control over the ichor, though, specifically with the intention to do exactly what you're proposing, and more. I think about what it might be like if they could wield it. I think about insurgence and uprising, and overthrowing their oppressors. I think about how it might've allowed them to change the game, to take back their power.
I think about that a lot, actually.

Can we have some headcannons about the Opress siblings dynamics?
YES YES ABSOLUTELY 💛❤🧡🖤
because we all know how normal i am about the Brothers Opress 😅
(i'm going off of my own AU if that's ok :3)
As a Trio
Tumblr media
Overall, the three of them get along well, and they work together even better. With all of their resourceful qualities combined, they've made themselves quite the unstoppable trio.
They tend to stay in their own lanes when they have some extra downtime, which usually consists of Maul in the dark of his quarters meditating, Savage sitting around the main deck reading, and Feral sitting among the cargo tinkering with a small ongoing project.
Since he doesn't have an outstanding criminal record which includes multiple war crimes, Feral is usually tasked with being the public face of their work, because the more attention is drawn to him, the less attention is placed upon his brothers.
Once they're in the rental, they're very good about keeping the house clean, and having the rent ready whenever it was time. After all, the objective was to keep a low profile.
Savage usually cooks, and because of this he was assigned by default as the one who usually makes dinner (thankfully Savage is an excellent cook, because it's goddamn tough to get Maul to actually eat something)
Maul and Savage
Tumblr media
They're obviously a force to be reckoned with when they're together. However, it's not just that. Maul feels as though Savage understands him in a way that not many do, therefore, he tends to stay closer to him.
Savage has never genuinely called his brother Master, even though Maul constantly calls him his Apprentice. Savage has always seen him as his younger brother.
They meditate a lot together. During these sessions, Maul would slowly sneak in doctrines of his own trainings and that of the Dark Side (Savage knew to take these words with a grain of salt ;3).
Savage would occasionally get awakened by Maul who had a question about things back at the village. This would turn into hours of Savage talking about their own culture, since unfortunately, Maul wasn't around Dathomir long enough to experience it. :(
Savage and Feral
Tumblr media
Savage is more of himself when he's around Feral, but it's not because he doesn't trust Maul, it's because that Savage and Feral literally grew up together, and that's a certain kind of connection that he wasn't able to have with Maul. :(
Savage continuously regrets what he had done to Feral, but Feral insists that he's not affected by it anymore (he occasionally flinches if Savage does something that reminds him of that night :( )
They would sometimes get high together (since, back in the day, Savage was considered the plug of the village secretly), which sparked either some really existential conversations, or laughing at the dumbest shit possible. XD
They both still like to spar, even though Savage has changed significantly physically, it reminds them of home.
Feral and Maul (the twins hehe)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When they first were reunited with each other, it was definitely a rocky start, and because tensions were high, they would fight a lot.
Maul is technically older by a few minutes, and he doesn't let Feral forget it.
Feral could not care less about that and will still tease him a lot. XD
Savage has had to break up more than a couple scuffles between the two of them, and now knows when to intervene before any arguments escalate to blows.
Even though it started out so sketchy, Maul still cares about Feral, and would kill for him if a situation demanded it.
Maul always saw Feral as the more "naive" of the three of them, but he did not know what Feral had gone through at the village growing up. :(

Per All Saints’ Day - a take on the nightbrothers and death.
There is a tale, spoken in bare murmurs amongst the brothers who surround the blaze of fire, that those who die with no fear walk amongst the ether of glory. Their names, still carved along dome mountains, bring good fortune to those who follow in their footsteps, enlightening to those who step away far enough from the horizon to see their way back. Back, amongst the kneeling men who have the symbols of glory traced into their skin with weathered inks and minds threaded with what they’ve been told since youth.
Beginnings have no glory, birth is rarely celebrated - it is the privilege of champions to be passed down far beyond death to cultivating minds. Warriors aren’t born. They are shaped, by the weather surrounding them and every painful breath amongst the winters, moulded by hard yet silently considerate hands of their brothers - there is nuance to this kind of love. These feelings aren’t spoken aloud, though ever-present through hardship of their fate. To be cared for is to be spoken of when the sky fades into black and men huddle near the flames, to be cared for is to be prayed for over foraged berries melted in steel pots, to be the wisdom of those still developing horns and passing rites.
There is honour in death, a rite of passage itself from a brother to a tale of wisdom, from a man to a legend whose name will be mixed with another as the night goes on and fire licks the darkened skies. Bittersweet wines, glazed meats mixed with sour preserves give way to a flurry of stories told louder each time, each hailed and not once weeped over. There is no place for sadness amongst the memory of those who fade into the gold horizons, candles still lit as the stars die down and festivities reach their end.

With as much as I want a big, dramatic, loving, touching moment about Feral being alive and finally coming home, and it's a whole big thing-
I think It's a fuck-ton more on-brand and hilarious to just have him... appear one day.
Like he's in the house. He's there. Suddenly. Neither of the two other brothers even knew he entered the house.
Like, there's no previous context given, Feral doesn't remember the details, Savy-boy can't stop crying, and Maul is just standing severely confused.
The Opress family seems to have a habit of... appearing again. Alive. Out of nowhere. For no reason.

As the foremost expert on the Zabrak, help me to understand: are the male's nails always long, or are they like vampires, where they extend in times of excitement (sexual of violent)? I can't find the barometer for this but I'm inclined to think it's the latter - fancy extendo-predatory magic.
I don't think I'm the foremost expert in anything least of all zabrak but thanks for thinking of me.
There's no "evidence" in the media we've got to suggest they can grow them at will and as necessary, although that's a cool concept and worth exploring — possibly as something that incorporates a little Dathomiri folklore or legend tripping...
Think Nightbrothers sharing stories around the bonfire in the deepest parts of night, telling tales about mythical creatures who roamed the swamps and old stones of the wild landscape they called home: a creature so fearsome that its horns stood as tall as a child and had claws so long and sharp that they could slice a gravethorn in half in a single stroke; its burning eyes as bright as the fire itself — glowing under the sickle moons — waiting for unsuspecting Nightbrother boys to cross into its territory to fill its belly. You know those tales; the cautionary ones.
I think under normal circumstances it's likely they elect to grow them out and file them into claws, or not: Savage wears them long, but Feral wears them blunted and squarish, for example. It might be a mark of status too, or serve practical functions when in battle. They are a warring people, after all.
Same as their horns, I imagine they require a bit of upkeep too.
(Ask Savage what colour claw polish he prefers, and whether he'd like them poison-tipped when he goes to the manicurist.)

maulkie actually means everything to maul. genuinely. his existence changes maul in a way he didn’t think possible. while his need to get revenge against sidious is still very much a driving force for him, his need to keep maulkie safe is stronger. initially he thinks maulkie could be a key part of helping him take down sidious. now the thought of losing maulkie is more terrifying than the thought of facing sidious alone (he’s not dumb tho so he’s not gonna do that either). maulkie is the first person maul truly cares about since savage and he has no intentions of repeating the same mistakes he did with his brother. BUT ALSO. i think the relationship with maulkie is gonna fuck up his connection to the force bc he’s essentially (trying) to let go of his revenge needs for maulkie’s benefit. SO HIS LITTLE PRINCE MEANS EVERYTHING TO HIM.
quinlan,,, the first time maul lets his need for companionship win. for one night,, but it was worth it lol. he’s reaping the benefits of kilindi and komari coming before him bc while maul is good at living in denial about both situations, the need to have what he lost is still there. maul is so terrible at letting his guard down around anyone, but quinlan is so good at getting him to do it anyway. touching him without any intentions of hurting him. loving him and being devoted to him with no catch, no ulterior motives, just wanting the feelings to be reciprocated. i know we were joking about the power imbalance ships ndkfnjfknjgk but this is actually the first relationship he’s experienced without that imbalance. they’re equals and maul doesn’t (usually) feel the need to assert dominance like dear old daddy palps always taught him.
i’ve rambled now but he loves his kids too. cal and galen are his little guys. they’re a big deal for him too bc they’re the first time he has the position to train how he was trained, to punish how he was punished but he can’t. he can’t put someone through the same things he was put through.
FERAL. maul thinks feral was born with the instructions to purposely piss him off everyday. but he loves him. would do anything for him. i love the relationship arcs they go through and feral ultimately being the voice of reason.
and finally maul respects rook which is saying a lot considering how he treats most of his… soldiers?? employees???? while he will direct her towards potential death should he need to, he would always prefer it if she didn’t die.
What does my Muse mean to yours?
I love this so much AAAAAAAAAAAAA
Maulkie loves Maul. He looks up to him both as an example that someone can walk away from Sidious and live, which gives him more hopes for the future than he ever thought he'd get to have, as a cautionary tale on what to avoid doing (don't go after Obi-Wan Kenobi, basically), and also as the father he never thought could want him considering he was created to kill him. He's learning so much from Maul and is really grateful.
Quinlan feels safe with Maul, which is a little ironic considering everyone is constantly telling him that Maul is incredibly dangerous. But Maul is the first person he's felt he's an equal to, Maul doesn't judge him for his 'crazy' thoughts or because he fell to the dark side and committed atrocities.
Cal and Galen both have different approaches to being mentored by Maul. Cal was used to the boogeyman-like tales about Darth Maul all through the clone wars and even before that, but then he meets Maul and it's... different, Maul is far from a good person, but he's trying to be a Master to Cal. As for Galen... well, he's used to his mentors being Vader, who was quite neglectful, distant and violent when it came to training him, and Proxy, who was supportive and his only comfort... when his primary directive wasn't making him try to kill Galen; but Maul is different from Vader, and Galen sees a lot of himself on Maul- like Maul is the adult version of the child taken away from his family by a Sith that Galen is.
Feral grew up in Maul's shadow, actually meeting him was something he never thought he'd get to do and it's... strange. He's not disappointed, far from it. It's actually a breath of fresh air to see that Maul is just some guy. Yes, he's powerful and he's different, but he's also just a mortal Zabrak just like him- one that Feral feels he can actually teach some things to, mostly about their culture and heritage.
Rook admires Maul. Ironically, he brought her hope that perhaps Mandalore could go back to its former glory. Perhaps the Death Watch was not the way, but Maul's lead was by far better than Vizsla's. Even if he had ulterior motives, he had actual goals and was ambitious and determined to reach them, not just wanting the throne because some ancestors of his used to sit on it. She also respects strength and Maul is the strongest person she's ever met, so it's easy to follow him.

The consequences of losing the Great Negotiator at the start of the War?
The consequences of an abandoned Anakin?

Savage and Feral very much alive, with their brother living in darkness on Lotho Minor?
