Jan Van Eyck…. “100 Great Artists” by Charlotte Gerlings. Born in Maaseyck (Maaseik) Belgium about 1390, he was a Diplomat for John of Bavaria in The Hague (1422-1424) and was appointed Court painter and valet to Philip the Good of Burgundy in 1425. The foremost Flemish painter of the 15th-century led a double life for the first half of his career. His initial appointment to Philip the Good was a useful cover for secret diplomatic missions to Spain and Portugal. However, after his move to Bruges (1433-33), where they welcomed him as both an artist and a city councilor, he produced several signed and dated works without interruption. 1) The Madonna with Canon Joris van der Paele (detail) (1436). The inclusion of the Canon’s spectacles is significant. 2) The Arnolfini Portrait (1416) This is probably not a marriage portrait; civil registers in Lille date Giovanni Arnolfini’s marriage as 1447, thirteen yrs later. So, who is the woman in green? The Arnolfini Portrait 1434, Jan van Eyck Oil on oak 82.2 x 60 cm This work is a portrait of Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife, but is not intended as a record of their wedding. His wife is not pregnant, as is often thought, but holding up her full-skirted dress in the contemporary fashion. Arnolfini was a member of a merchant family from Lucca living in Bruges. The couple are shown in a well-appointed interior. The ornate Latin signature translates as 'Jan van Eyck was here 1434'. The similarity to modern graffiti is not accidental. Van Eyck often inscribed his pictures in a witty way. The mirror reflects two figures in the doorway. One may be the painter himself. Arnolfini raises his right hand as he faces them, perhaps as a greeting.
