I put together a little tutorial on how I approach master studies!
There isn't enough space on the images for full alt text, so please view this document: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GmDA4u4sqUoYxtRy7JMcIQ13xMSHO1HZqpsLbRCP_dk/edit?usp=sharing
Thank you for reading, I hope this helps! I purposefully had it centre on fundamentals that will apply to any study and software/brushes, but if you want to know more about how I painted any particular part/what brushes I used, feel free to ask.
Master study of Mucha’s 1900 “Spring” merged with fanart of Baldur’s Gate 3’s Shadowheart
Symbolism, inspiration, and such below the cut!
I went with a redeemed/Selûnite version of Shadowheart, since that’s the route she took in my main playthrough of the game. All the flowers in her bouquet lean into that symbology, as well as her role as healer.
Night orchids: her favorite flower
Bay laurel: ambition, success
Blackthorn: hope against adversity, good fortune, protection
Did a master study today of Hans Zatka's "Two Fairies Embracing in a Landscape with a Swan", but instead I used it as a chance to draw Aziraphale n Crowley🥰
It's finished! I painted The Crow as "The Fallen Angel" by Alexandre Cabanel. A study of one of my favorite paintings mixed with the character from one of my favorite movies. I did this all with oil paint brushes, which is not my usual choice at all, but I'm really happy with this piece. **Swipe for zoomed details and the original/reference. When I was a kid I’d spend hours just looking at manga and trying to draw it, the heavy abstraction always really messed with me even though I find it beautiful and I never got it looking right. I think I’m starting to get it now? I’m so excited to be getting a better grasp on how to use my inking brushes too :’) <3 As a transmasc teen who didn’t know they were on the spectrum there was something about the patterning of masculinity found within seinen and BL manga that always felt very understandable and doable. Idk, just spouting off. was doign master studies and thought why not manga again 🤣✨
I spent this past semester doing as many value studies as I could make time for. Value studies are SO IMPORTANT for learning composition. I'm trying to catch up with my peer who did literally hundreds.
