Working on a new au, thinking about robot Remus made entirely out of other scrapped bots<3
I'm not in love with this version but it is a good starting point for figuring him out. Wanna see anyone in particular next?

Logan: Remus, keep an eye on Roman today. He's going to say something to the wrong person and get punched.
Remus: Sure, I'd love to see Roman get punched!
Logan, sighs: Try again.
Remus, sighing: I will try to stop Roman from getting punched.

I've noticed that Light Sides have to be summoned, Dark Sides can just show up.
While this isn't always true, overall, this happens.
Several times, especially in earlier videos, Thomas would say, out loud, that he wants one of the Sides, Patton, Logan, or Roman.
If they were talking, and felt they needed Roman, Thomas, or one of the other Sides, could call him up.
Even when he didn't come up, we heard him and Patton say something. (I can't remember, but I think this was during the episode where Thomas forgot his lines during a play audition)
When Virgil was introduced, he was just. there.
Virgil shows up when he wants to, or whenever he finds it necessary. He even commented on not being used to being called up.
But as the videos went on, he showed up less, and was called up more. Currently, it's relatively even.
Janus has only appeared as someone else, I'm pretty sure. Unless you count that one time when they watched movies.
When Patton showed up in Can Lying Be Good, Thomas commented on not noticing Patton come up.
You could say that Remus popped up, but, eh, he rose up behind a television, I don't think that counts.
Virgil, like I said, sometimes is called up, and sometimes just shows up.
Guess who else shows up, and is called?
Logan.

Hello :) Your compilation of Logan getting cut off popped up on my youtube feed and I recognized the url from my dsmp phase as that nice mod who helped run dsmp-analysis. I've been hfx on sanders sides for weeks now and I'm starving for some good analysis, so I immediately run to your blog and wasn't disappointed to find some good shit. I don't agree with everything, but it's certainly well-reasoned and stays far away from common apologist/moralistic discourse pitfalls (it's really sad how such a thing is so rare nowadays).
I'm glad you like Remus because his character is so fascinating. I've been looping forbidden fruit for a few days now and I can't get over how for all that he's labeled "taboo creativity" the song talks about honesty/knowledge/self awareness most of all, Remus ideas about right and wrong second, and his opinions on creativity are the topic least discussed there. Like, his character is so much more than the gross and disturbing imagery he conjures up.
YOU!! I RECOGNIZE UR URL!!!!! HI HELLO YES WELCOME!!!
BUT THANK U FOR DWELLING AT MY ANALYSIS HOUSE... IT DOES MEAN A LOT... and omg i fucking LOVE remus too!!!! i feel like i dont have enough posts abt remus even if i have a Shit ton. his character is just SO fascinating, esp with the mysteriousness in goals + the way he Clearly is Thinking and Plotting Something. like yeah he uses gross imagery yada yada yadda but he is so much more than that, and im soooo excited to see where it goes in the long run

Do you have any ships you don't like?
Ever just look into your inbox and realize you have a bunch of asks you forgot about? Ha could be me
That was going to say couldn't be me but auto correct changed it and it's not wrong so I'm leaving it
Anywho, ships I don't like? Yes of course, I have many.
Obviously there's the forbidden ship r*mr*m that shouldn't even be a thing so I'm not going to dignify it with a paragraph
Then there's Logicality which I've written about before. I used to like it, but after rewatching Sanders Sides twice I realized they aren't very healthy for each other in a romantic sense. Patton seems to make Logan out to be the bad guy when he's just trying to help, and Logan tends to snap when his patience runs thin. Also the Skip incident in SVS Redux, where Patton asked for Logan's input before silencing him because Logan's opinion went against his.
Then there's Intruality, I love it in AUs under certain circumstances, but it's a big fat No in cannon. It doesn't work because if you look at Sanders Sides from Remus's perspective, Patton is a manipulative abuser. If you look at Sanders Sides from Patton's perspective, Remus is a bad guy that lashes out for no reason. Like, sure, one could say that they might work through that and think they misunderstood each other. However, neither of them are technically wrong. Besides, considering that Remus exists because his version of creativity was morally frowned upon, and was therefore repressed so that Roman could be a morally appropriate version of creativity, a romantic relationship would be awkward at absolute best. Honestly if they do somehow work on their issues with each other, the best outcome would be that Remus and Patton's relationship would become a sort of father that abandoned his son and now they're reconnecting kind of thing.
Then there's Moxiety, this one is just because I see Patton and Virgil in a father/son relationship. Also, the fact that Virgil is Thomas's fears and fear is an emotion, which Patton has dominion over, it's possible that Patton is actually Virgil's father in the same way that Roman and Remus are brothers. I also believe that the Orange Side is anger, and if that's the case, he would be Patton's son as well.
I can go into that theory in another post though.
Next is Royality, and yes I know, you're probably sensing a pattern.
Now, don't get me wrong. While Patton is my least favourite character, that doesn't mean I hate him. I actually love Patton, especially in episodes like the puppet episode where he shows incredible emotional maturity that is really helpful to Thomas.
I also love how complicated of a character he is, and it's sad that the fandom simplifies him to just a happy, nice, cute, silly character, because he's more than that. He has severe depression, and a lot of issues that come from that. He also grew up taking catholic views to heart, following all the morals Thomas was taught as well as he can.
On top of that, he manages emotions, which is such an incredibly complicated thing to be in charge of. He manages instincts, like when Thomas feels good for doing something good, or when Thomas is hungry, or thirsty, or whatever else. He manages a large percentage of Thomas's likes, dislikes, sense of humour, inner child, and more. Patton has a large mountain of responsibilities, which adds to the complexity of his character.
He also appears to be very manipulative, whether or not he intends to be using manipulation tactics, I don't know. I think his character's too complicated to know that for sure. However, he's done a lot of love bombing, guilt tripping, and other manipulative actions that make him out to be this innocent good guy and anyone that disagrees with him to look like a bad guy.
Due to how complex of a character Patton is, and due to how he has made himself a father figure to most of the sides, it's hard to enjoy him in most ships in cannon. The only ship that works well for him is Moceit, in my opinion, because Janus is working with him to help Patton work through these issues. Patton is also good for Janus because Janus needs to learn how to communicate in a way that doesn't seem like he's attacking or sabotaging Thomas/the other sides.
Now, with that aside, back to Royality.
Royality is a very best friend or father/son relationship. More best friend in AUs and Father/Son in both cannon and AUs. I say more father son in cannon, because Roman has shown a desire to gain Patton's approval. He tries to follow Patton's rules, even though every time he finally manages to meet Patton's impossible standards, suddenly they change and turn around completely. (I have ranted about this several times and will likely do it again in future posts.)
Now, with those out of the way, yes there is more.
Next is Logince
I like Logince in AUs, and it's not that I don't think Logan and Roman's dynamic is amazing, it's not that I think they wouldn't work romantically, I just see them more as a brotherly relationship. Roman treats Logan like an older brother that he fights a lot with, but at the end of the day he just wants to be good enough for Logan. The way they talk about Patton to each other is a lot like Roman being a teenage brother complaining about their Dad and how lame/strict/embarrassing/etc he is to his adult brother.
Then there's Anxceit. This one I don't like because I see Janus as a mother figure to Virgil and Remus. I guess it could work in AUs, but to get their dynamic right, it would probably be a friends to enemies to lovers situation. Like Catradora. Also Janus and Virgil still have a lot of bad blood to work through, so if I'm wrong about the mother/son bond and they were just friends before, then Anxceit would probably have a lot of work to do and an awkward patching up before they can be in a healthy relationship.
Now there's Demus and Roceit. Which, maybe they shouldn't be on this list, because I do like these ships, but I do want to talk about them.
Demus I tend to feel meh about, it's basically dark side Royality. They work as a mother/son dynamic or best friends, not really romantic partners. However, I love them when it's Intruloceit, because I love Loceit and Intrulogical.
Roceit, this is friends to enemies to lovers galore. Roceit is not a healthy ship currently, but it's definitely an entertaining one. Due to Roman's insecurities and Janus using Roman for his greater plan, however, I don't know if a romantic relationship would work in cannon. It depends on where the story goes from where we are right now. However this is the perfect enemies to lovers ship for AUs if you get bored of Prinxiety's popularity.
Now what's interesting about Demus and Roceit is that if you believe in the theory that Roman and Remus were once King Creativity, which I do, and if you've seen the King AU, which I have, that adds all kinds of layers of complicated to Demus and Roceit. Of course, I may go over that in a future post.
Sorry this was so long, I hope you enjoyed my infodump!

Forbidden Fruit: The Duchess Edition
(This is just an idea of mine of a Sanders Sides genderbend edition)
Thomasine: CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHO SHE IS?!
Patricia: It's kind of hard to explain...
Riley: What? No, it's not! Let's start at the very beginning...
Adam and Eve bought knowledge for the small price of a little sin. They also lost eternal life, but what's fruit without the pits? I am the Duchess, and it's high time that I dropped in. And since you haven't puked yet, we'll know they're wrong when they call you sick.
It's unicorn horns and dragon tails, Reyna's dull creativity. If you want the spectrum A to Z, then you'll need a little help from me! From unicorn porn to rats impaled, I give these thoughts generously! If you really want to challenge your viewership, then you need to stop limiting me!
Thomasine: What in the… have I been drinking?
Laura: It's fine.
Patricia: It isn't you these thoughts you're thinking!
Violet: Alright! You've got to stop this gal from singin'!
Riley: I love how hard you try. It's so cute, let's resume!
Sure, people don't like me much, Thomasine, But that's only just cause I'm honest, gee! Good and bad is all made-up nonsense, see?
Reyna: Bruh, I'm gonna whip your butt!
Riley: Do ya promise me?
Thomasine, Speaking of honesty, Recently a snake offered me a morsel from the Tree of Knowledge:
She said "You're wanting to be more honest, and be direct dealing with your issues. No longer will you deceive yourself about the ugliness within you." Neat!
You wanna face facts? I've got one: Your late-night thoughts get pretty sick, dude. If you shared those musings with your friends, I doubt they would forgive you. Even though everybody sins, everybody dies, Why deny yourself knowledge, say knowledge of yourself?
You don't need to feel ashamed with your dear old Duchess You need not feign decency Do you see this house on fire? I see it too, Cause you've got a fiend in me!
So clap your feet, and stomp your hands, And dance off your booty cheeks! You can then bet your bottom, I'll still be around When all your loved ones leave!
Imagine with me! Licking the blowhole of a dolphin! Your best bud trapped inside a coffin! Your grandma choking on a lozenge! Your pet dog stuffed into a sausage! These sort of things are only thought in The mind of a person whose soul is truly rotten, So let all your hopes of heaven be forgotten, Cause your head's not in the gutter, pal! It's in hell! Hell, hell! The kind of mind you'd only find in hell!
(Janus's genderbend name is Josie)

The whole thing with Flynn getting all upset over Sega not canonizing Tangle/Whisp angers me all the more when there's cases where creators were legitimately creatively fucked over by the companies due to homophobia. The creator of Monster High, Garrett Sander, wanted a character to come out as gay but was told by Mattel that "it wasn't the right time", on top of him and the rest of the creative staff constantly being undermined because of outdated beliefs that girls don't like this and that. Then there's Rebecca Sugar, who was forced to end and wrap up Steven Universe earlier than she wanted to because she refused to budge with Ruby and Sapphire's wedding, on top of all the censorship other countries imposed on the show when it was brought over to them. But, sure, Sega are just a bunch of big mean homophobes pandering to the male demographic, and not because they don't want romance as the focul point of Sonic especially with the last time that happened in Archie.
Flynn worked for Archie
He has seen what happened to Archie because of Penders, who also added romance and sex where they didn't belong
He should know that Sonic has never been a romantic franchise, and the closest thing to romance is Amy's silly crush on Sonic
But I bet that he considers himself better and more influencial than Penders :\
(don't forget about Alex Hirsch who was forbidden from depicting a gay relationship unless it was played for laughs)

Why How to Train Your Dragon’s music score is so good
"The term "fantasy" can mean different things to different people. It can range from knights in shining armor rescuing damsels in distress to children learning magic at a school to heroes gallivanting across space. (Finnegan) Unlike other fantasy films like Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon focuses on realism. Harry Potter focuses on world-building and the struggle of good versus evil.
In contrast, How to Train Your Dragon focuses on a family conflict between  Hiccup and his father over their view on dragons.
Both fantasy worlds have their own signature elements.
In addition, both are presented in both books and movies. In translating fantasy novels to films, filmmakers must use music,  cinematography, and animation tricks to get the audience to feel what Hiccup and Harry feel in their fantasy worlds.
Music is often overlooked when talking about films. However, music is constantly helping audiences follow along with the story emotionally. Each character has their own theme music; in How to Train Your Dragon, Hiccup and Toothless themes are meant to be heard and felt together. The friends' themes complete each other.
Tumblr media
Photo by Weston M. from Unsplash
The unified theme is played triumphantly as Hiccup flies with Toothless untethered for the first time. Hiccup and Toothless' themes are played on top of one another as Hiccup releases Toothless from his trap and also in the track called Forbidden Friendship. which plays as Hiccup learns more about Toothless in the woods. The song titled Test drive plays as Hiccup and Toothless solo for the first time. "When flying, they must almost become one. In a  do or die exercise that forces both of them to let go and trust each other completely, no cheat cheats, and the music also has to do this" (Phoebe-Kate). The themes can be played in major or minor to induce different emotions. Hiccup and Toothless' themes embody friendship as Toothless' theme is not completed until the test drive.
"As Phoebe-Kate says, Hiccup's theme is played 31 times in the movie. This is a great demonstration of the brilliance of theme writing in movie scores. And we've seen it in so many scores in the past. For  decades this is how composers have created themes that make you  subconsciously remember parts of movies." (Charles Cornell) Memorable films are well directed and well scored. Those moments of tension in the final battle and the reveal of Hiccup's prosthetic leg are supported by music. That's why they are emotional and memorable.
Tumblr media
The co-directors Sanders and DeBlois strived to make the film as "live-action" as possible.
This included having actors record together. This captured real connections and grounded the fantasy film in reality. When Hiccup became an amputee, the directors knew it wasn't realistic for there to be no long-lasting consequences. Their disabilities are not presented simply as challenges. Instead, both adapt and grow closer from their experience. Maturing involves loss and change. It forces people to let go of innocent naivete. Hiccup grapples with being the chief of Berk and letting go of Toothless, and the innocence of forbidden friendship. After his father dies, he has to find his place among his people again. Hiccup's fantasy world has genuine moments of loss and change. This realism allows these animated "children's movies" to resonate with their audiences. Childhood doesn't last forever.

Based off a conversation with my friend:
Roman: Space is terrifying.. There's so much that hasn't been explored . . .
Logan: I don't know. The same can be said about the ocean. There's still so much of the ocean we haven't explored.Creatures we have yet to discover. . .
Remus: The ocean has mermaids who sing and talk about feet!
Roman and Logan:
Remus: What? Isn't that what "The Little Mermaid" is about?

Dark vs Light: Basic Theory
(This was kind of far on my Queue, but I just had a huge breakthrou theory so I'm getting it out there. I'm going to probably get all of this out today)
So this is going to be a big theory to cover, so I'm letting it out in chunks.
The basic idea of this theory is that each Light Side has a Dark Side.
But unlike many theories, guessing that it's the opposite, my theory is based on the idea of each opposite being the 'evil' or 'good' version of one concept.
Roman and Remus, the 'good' and 'evil' creativity.
Patton and Janus, the 'good' and 'evil' morality.
Logan's opposite will be discussed.
Virgil doesn't have an opposite. He is not good, he is not bad.
I will have at least four more parts in this, going in-depth on why each character parallels another, as well as speculating what Logan's opposite will be.
