A Principal Wardwell I sketched on International Smirkers’ Workers' Day, 2023.
This outfit will be burnt into my mind forever. I added the bead choker from later in 2.1. that she wears with the black blazer, because I like neck decoration. But boy was it a struggle to decide which Principal outfit to draw. In the end, I went with the autumn print dress, for the sake of an overall natural palette, and because the gathered fabric is fun to draw. Sketched on pape, inked with ballpoint, then shaded with graphite (HB, 2B and 6B) before scanning into PS.

More art? On an art blog? Unprecedented. This is my work from drawing class and its homework. Many many still lifes.
Tumblr media
Each of the five still lifes from class were made within 10 minutes. This first one, we were supposed to explore shapes and not focus on details. I think I added a bit too much detail for the assignment, but I do like how it turned out.
Tumblr media
In the second one, we were tasked to draw one object first, then measure the others from there. I drew the can first. This is probably my favourite of the five - it only gets worse from here :) I did somehow fuck up measuring the side of that book though.
Tumblr media
The next assignment was to only use the side of the charcoal, to create shapes instead of lines. I didn't like this one when I first finished it, but looking back, I think I did a very good job of showing the different shapes.
Tumblr media
The fourth drawing was the same as the third, with the twist that we weren't allowed to take the charcoal off the paper at all. This was mostly just very hard. It was difficult for me to visually differentiate the shapes when I couldn't physically lift my pencil to start a new one.
Tumblr media
And lastly, this deformed masterpiece. The reason it turned out this deformed, was that we weren't supposed to look at the paper. Just at the examples. I did have a lot of fun drawing this one, and laughing at it when I was done. Goes to show that art doesn't have to be good to be fun.
During class we were supposed to learn about composition, linework, shapes, arranging them, contour, and analysing your example (and own work!) I regret to say that I didn't really pay attention to the composition of my works, but I did get a better feel for lines and shapes.
For homework, we were tasked to set up our own still life and draw it (in graphite) from three different perspectives. I added in the twist of using different pencils for each: an HB, 2B, and 6B

So I decided to try some sketching for the first time in ages and it's very smudgy but I think it actually came out pretty well overall? Drawn using a 6B and HB graphite pencil:

hi!! i’m starting my first ever realistic human sketch.. do you have any tips? (i picked Louis, as one does :))
i adore all your art, and I’m just super in awe of everything you make.
thankyou in advance!!
Hello!
I want to start by saying that I'm honored you came to me to ask this question! Also thank you so much <3
So I never got an art education or something so everything I learned works specifically for me bc i got it all on my own. That is if youtube videos and social medias don't count as teaching method.
By realistic human sketch I'm assuming you want to make a proper portrait? For the basic sketch you can do it studying the shapes and putting them down lightly and adding details only after you have the whole face shape. Idk if this makes sense skdjdjdjd
Or you could use the grid method, wich is probably long and a bit boring but it kinda allows you to focus more on the shading bc the basic sketch, at least for me, is easier to draw with a grid. Now I use this method for big drawings like my 50x70 cm portraits (bc I suck at proportions on big surfaces) so it's probably not the best for smaller drawings.
For the shading there are so many different methods not even I know all of them.
I usually go for graphite bc I like the final result and I like the contrast bc I use like a charcoal pencil for the darkest shade and a barely there shade with a hb2 for the lighter shade if I'm not wrong. I use also a 5b, a 6b and a 0. I recommend using different pencils for shading to create more contrast and not risk losing all the shadows.
Also I usually start with the lighter shade as a base, I put it all over the portion I want to color in and then I use a napkin to smooth it without pressing to hard. Then I build the shadows, always from lighter to darker. Here's a visual if it helps
Try not to touch the drawing a lot to avoid handprints and spots, put a sheet of paper under your hand when you need to rest it on the drawing and don't drag it, pick it up to move it.
Also keep the sketch light so you can give it volumes drawing darker lines and lighter lines based on the light while you're coloring it in.
Of course this is in no way the correct method, it is just the way I do it so you'll find your own technique with time. Just don't give up, keep practing and everything will work out. The more you do it the better it gets!
I hope this helps a bit. If you need something more specific or have other questions pls don't be afraid to ask!!
Louis is a great subject to draw I hope you have fun with it!! And pls do show me the final result if you want 👀

Hm for the art supplies, maybe try collages? Clay modeling? Idk if u have this, but there’s a whole array of graphite pencils. Maybe get some of those if u don’t have them? H, 2H, 6H, HB, 5B, 6B, F, etc. (I know there’s a lot more but these are just the ones I can remember rn). If u use mechanical pencils instead, they do make different kinds of lead (outside of size, I mean). Also! Chalk? Oil pastels? Charcoal? -Forrest 💜💜
Ooh thank you for the suggestions!! I'm interested in chalk pastels but they look really messy 😣 oils and graphite aren't really my thing
And as fun as a collages and pottery sound, I'm really bad at crafts other than sewing lol

Baby feets. I love baby feets they’re so precious and perfect and teeny. Plus you imagine the places they’ll travel, the journey those feets will take them on.
Each journey starts with some teeny feet. It’s also been a journey watching these feets grow, and get more independent. I was feeling all nostalgic because there’s Mother’s Day banners up everywhere, it isn’t Mother’s Day for a while yet but I had to draw something.
I’m having a lot of fun with graphite. It’s so much easier using just a few pencils rather than more than I can count when I do coloured pencil work I feel myself connecting to what I’m producing more because I don’t have to concentrate on which colour I need next, and can free ball it a lot more because you can erase graphite if you do a layer wrong lol. However I might blow this up and do a coloured pencil version but I was feeling the monochrome for this.
Anyway yeah, feets and feels.
I used faber castell mechanical pencil, polychromos black pencil and a staedtler mars black 6B pencil that came in upcrate to do the inbetween black tones. This is 10x7 Bristol sketchbook :)

So I tried learning to draw when I was in high school but I got frustrated but I've decided to try and pick it back up in my old age. So I wanted to know, what kind of pencils are the best to use when just starting out?
Literally any pencil. If you’re really just starting out, you don’t need to worry too much about materials. Of course some materials are better quality than others, but at least in my opinion in that phase you should really just worry about having fun.
Also, at least in my experience there isn’t a huge difference in quality between brands with graphite pencils. The paper matters much more in that regards. If you’re really looking into something more specific and of slightly higher quality than a regular hb pencil and printer paper, I’d say probably get an H (for sketching) a B or2B (depending on your preference) and if you want then another 5 or 6B for those really dark shades. There are a lot of brands that make affordable pencils and papers for a decent price, and they change a lot from location to location. The seller at your local art supply store will be able to point you to good materials sold in your area.
Have fun :)

What would you recommend a novice buy to get started sketching?
Okay hopefully this post doesn’t look terribly intimidating. I am anything but brief. The tl;dr is “buy 2B, HB, and 2H pencils, a sketchbook, and go”.
Pencils
Drawing pencils come in a variety of hardnesses. You’ll usually see them range from 6H (very “hard”, or light) to 6B (very “bold/black”, or dark), though higher numbers exist. An HB pencil is a very middle-of-the-road pencil. Your old yellow No. 2 pencil is usually somewhere around an HB.
You can go buy a variety pack, or pick an assortment of loose pencils. A 4H, 2H, HB, 2B, and 4B will cover all of your needs. Use a B pencil for darker lines, an H for lighter ones. B pencils are softer and will need to be sharpened more regularly; H pencils have a higher clay content and hold their point for longer, and won’t get as dark as a B pencil naturally will.
(Note: One brand’s HB might be equivalent to another brand’s 2B. It’s easiest to stick within one brand so that you know your scale is consistent.)
I also love Col-Erase pencils. I use them for sketching, not for colored-in work. They kind of just make everything ~feel~ like a sketch rather than a serious drawing, you know? It’s purely psychological but I feel less critical when my drawing looks like a draft. Pick up regular pencils, but you might find these fun too. (You can also do rough sketches in colored lines and then refine them with regular pencil!)
Papers
Go into an art store, find something cheap labeled “drawing paper”. Done.
If you feel like the choices are overwhelming and you just want a specific recommendation: Strathmore 300 series is available pretty much everywhere. It’s the one with the bright yellow cover. (You may see other Strathmore drawing papers labeled 400 or 500 series - those are higher quality papers. No need to spend the extra money, 300 is a good paper when you’re starting out.)
The main point is just to not use lined paper or printer paper or stationary paper; grab something that was manufactured for drawing. I have Paper Opinions (and some fairly arbitrary loyalties) nowadays but a lot of it comes down to personal preference. I can now tell whether I’ll like a paper for a given medium by its touch but I only figured that out by drawing on a lot of different common drawing papers.
Miscellaneous Stuff
Get a half-decent sharpener, I guess?? I usually just grab whatever metal thing is near the store register, often this cheap little guy (beware, this is a pack of 25 lol). Some people have much stricter sharpener opinions than I do. Do keep your pencil sharp, though.
Good erasers! I have a few go-tos…
A vinyl block eraser, I personally swear by Pentel’s Hi-Polymer eraser. Good for just picking up a whole area.
A retractable eraser. I use any old one that looks like this, but if you want super detailed erases you may want the Tombow MONO Zero which has a tiny point.
I like kneaded erasers too. You can gently press them on an area to lighten, but not totally erase, a line. You can shape it to get fine points and details. When they get dirty, just stretch them out a few times to ‘clean’ it (though at some point it will be too full of graphite to continue using). Bonus: Great for stress relief and idle fidgeting. :D
A lot of other tools exist in the art world. Blenders. Transfer paper. Compasses. Lead holders and point sharpeners. Different types of papers like bristol and hot/cold-press. They have their place, but when starting out I think they just complicate things. You can make great sketches with a shitty pencil and a pad of paper.
p.s. all these links are for online stores but if you have a local independent art store pls go support your local art store
Other Words That Form Sentences
Your techniques are far more important than your tools. Good tools can make your life easier but you can’t buy your way to the art you want to make.
Do observational drawings. Find a flower or a sleeping pet or any other object, draw it. It might suck. Turn the page, draw more. Use references. (Drawing from imagination is fun! But learn to use references.)
Work on controlling your hand. This is, imo, an artist’s most important technical skill. Learn to make really, really faint lines regardless of the pencil you’re using - you don’t want to carve into your paper, you want to just leave graphite on top of the surface. Tilt your pencil, learn what kind of lines you can get from the side of the pencil vs. the tip. Adjust your grip, make different lines with different hand positions. Your average “writing” grip is good for tight drawings, but for loose sketching you’ll want to hold farther away from the tip.
Experiment. Your drawing paper isn’t sacred, don’t be afraid to ruin a page. Make note of what you do and don’t like.
I can do an actual Techniques For Making Lines On Paper And Lines That Look Like Things post if there’s interest for that. But hopefully the above was helpful in buying your first set of art supplies!

We started the day off with a couple of 2 minute drawings, I used a 6B graphite stick to keep the lines simple and bold. Drawing up boxes we then filled them with more 2 minute sketches. I enjoyed using different colour pastels to give a colourful comic style look. I'd love to do this more often.
Later in the session we looked at old victorian christmas cards so we could get inspiration while drawing. For each pose we picked a different card to incorporate with it. Although the cards were quite weird, I found it really fun :)

FAQ:
Where do you get your blinkies/dividers?
I make a few blinkies for myself. But most I get from blogs like @animatedglittergraphics-n-more
What do you use to draw?
I have an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. I use Procreate as my program
What brushes are you using?
I usually use a downloaded brush called “THAT graphite” for sketching and most coloring. Otherwise it’s the 6B Pencil, slightly modified, Syrup brush with 40-50% streamline, Gouache, Spectra and Round Brush that Procreate comes with for most other applications that are not specialized (glitter, lace, chains, pearls, etc.)
Do you stream?
Not currently just because getting an iPad to stream to OBS is annoying as hell and streaming directly from my iPad to twitch seems to break within 30 minutes of the stream.
When you do time lapses, what do you use?
Procreate auto records the full time lapse, so I use that file and download the audio I want before editing it together on Premiere Rush
Do you take commissions?
My commissions are currently open year-round. The pricing info and contact methods are linked in the pinned post.

Creative thinking 1- Music, drawing and expression
For the second half of the day, we began to think about how we can respond to to objects/stimuli (ie sounds etc) through materials and mark making. As I have an interest in art therapy, I found this exercise very intriguing. We listened to three pieces of music and had to respond via mark making.
Steve Reich- Pulses/ Section I/ Section II (1998)
youtube
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We weren’t allowed to use colour for this response, so I used charcoal, pencil, 6B graphite stick and ink. It was really interesting to explore mark making and how to translate my response without use of colour- as colour itself can be emotive. I ended up creating several pages for different sections within the music piece. The music was layered, atmospheric and varied from gentle to pulsing. I interpreted the gentle sounds of pulsing with quick, small waving lines and layered the mark making to reflect layering of sounds. Louder sounds were reflected with heavier mark making. The end fades out to silence and represented this with rubbing out the charcoal to faint marks.
John Zorn- The Interpretation of Dreams (2017)
youtube
Tumblr media
This creative response was very lively and experimental, just like the music! We were now allowed to use colour and whatever mediums we liked. As the the piece was so energetic and layered, I used a variety of materials for mark making on two sheets of A3 paper. I used oil pastels, colour pencils and Acrylics. I also explored different paint techniques such as Impasto and scraffito to create interesting marks. I had also used my fingers to smear paint on, as well as directly from the tube. I used bright colours to reflect the energy of the piece- it was fun piece to make!
Brian Eno- Thursday Afternoon (2005 Digital remaster)
youtube
Tumblr media
The music for this piece was a stark contrast compared to the last one! It was calm, dreamy and ambient. It was also meditative and found myself creating marks that reflected this- with loose, sweeping motions. I had used diluted ink to represent the flow within the music and gentle layers. The colours are more muted and calming, using blue, green and purples that can be associated with calm and relaxation. For the chimes within the music, I used undiluted ink and dropped it onto the water saturated paper to create a burst effect. I then gently swept over it with more water to soften the blots.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this exercise and has made me think how stimuli such as music can create art. It has helped me think about mark making more and the variety of ways I can represent a feeling. I also found the session to be quite therapeutic and think it is a great way of dealing with creative block- this is an exercise I’ll definitely keep in mind when that happens! I am also curious to explore this with further projects, perhaps for my final project where I can incorporate mark making of my feelings into my final piece.

Y'all. This is my most complex drawing in my entire art career... I've come close.. But never as detailed as this. It was a lot of work, a lot of pain for my hand, but a lot of fun, too. "Keep Your Secrets" Approximately 11"x13" Graphite on acid free fine art paper. I used a mix of pencils for this: mechanical HB pencils, Blackwing Matte, Blackwing 602, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B, 8B, and 9B. #fineart #graphitework #graphite #portraits #portraiture #crows #ravens #darkart #darkartists #darkartwork #ethereal #birdwings #anatomicalheart #figuredrawing #contemporaryart #contemporaryartist #surrealart https://www.instagram.com/p/CE64TzunH_4/?igshid=1pyif6xhm2yn7

I'm not a lifting blog but I wanted to know if you highly recommend any art products for semi-beginners. Obviously I'm starting for fun and for stress relief but I do still want to take it seriously
Uhhh I mean art stores can be tricky so I’d be careful if I were you. I lift at this big art store in my city or Michaels is good too. Paints are sometimes tagged so be careful. id stay away from store brand paints if you’re lifting cause they’re usually garbage lol go for the good stuff. Winsor&newton are amazing especially for watercolor. I wouldn’t recommend oils for a beginner but if you do want to try it a good brand is grumbacher. I recommend watercolors for beginners tho they’re fun and easy!! Lift a watercolor sketchbook while you’re at it. Different pencils (HB, 2B, 4B, 6B are what I get, the number is how dark the graphite is). Charcoal is good too but messy, easy to lift tho. Markers are the hardest cause they're always locked up but if you can get your hands on some copics go for it!! Hope this helps!!

If you might be a backyard mechanic and provide an ATV, odds are you've considered tinkering by using it to enhance performance or just to it your own. Although these vehicles can be fun to ride and economical to maintain, there are critical factors to take into account when driving them.
