A Really Hot Day.
The hallways of Evergreen Academy were bustling with life, except for the one that led straight to the greenhouse. The late afternoon sun streamed in through the completely glass atrium, heating up the ground to near unbearable levels, and making Cassius all the more annoyed with his companions to his botany class with Miss Delaney.
He could feel the sweat soaking into his uniform and melting the gel in his hair as he scanned the spacious hallway for an escape. There was zero reason for it to be so hot. English weather always got more drab and dreary during autumn, which was the season they unfortunately found themselves in, not happier.
The sun felt like it increased the intensity just to spite him. He felt like pulling out a bag of buttered popcorn to spite it back.
A deep, feminine voice with a Yorkshire accent brought him out of his annoyance.
“She’s sooo fit,” Gen Breckenridge said from beside him.
Gen had long, shiny brown hair that seemed to blow in the most cinematic way whenever the lightest breeze blew by. She also had some of the bluest eyes he had ever seen, only edged out by a mutual friend, Charles.
And Cassius had only ever met one other person who hated their full name like Gen did. Her full name was Genevieve, which was nowhere near as bad as ‘Edgar’, the second person he knew. She hated it anyways, and would sock anyone who called her that in the jaw, unless they were a teacher.
“Gen,” Cassius groaned, “sock it about Helena for a second.”
“Shhh!” She hissed. Her face cheeks were a light shade of red. “Don’t say her name out loud! What if someone else heard you!”
“No-one else is here, Gen,” Lisette Mistry said from beside Gen. “Relax.”
Lisette was Gen’s roommate. Even though it physically pained him to say so, Lissy was the George to Gen’s Cassius. Aside from a few differences in the thickness of their eyebrows, the bridges of their noses and their ears—Lissy had thicker eyebrows and a stronger bridge, while George had slightly bigger ears—Lissy and George looked very vaguely alike: short brown hair, brown eyes, fair skin, and long, long necks.
George even had a growth spurt recently, finally making him taller than Cassius and everyone else in their eight person friend group. So in revenge, Cassius took to calling him a giraffe.
He chuckled a little as he imagined George telling him to shut up in his Californian accent. Warmth spread through his chest as he then thought of George’s stupid little smirk that lit up Cassius’ day, and the sparkle of his eyes whenever Cassius said something that George found remotely funny, and the way his heart would flutter any time George laughed.
Even though he was a sweaty mess, the warmth he felt relaxed his muscles and brought a small and slightly dumb smile onto his face.
Thank goodness I have my next class with him, he thought. I get how Gen feels. Maybe I should stop saying Helena’s name…
“Cass!” Lissy yelled right in his ear. Her voice echoed around the atrium. “Were you listening to a word we were saying?”
“Huh?” Cassius replied. “Sorry, but no.”
“Cass!” Gen admonished, rather dramatically. “This is serious. What do I do?”
“What do you do about what?” Cassius asked. The next word he said left his mouth before he could even stop himself. “Helena?”
Cassius slapped a hand over his mouth.
“Shhh!” Lissy and Gen hissed. Gen managed to get even redder.
“Gen,” Cassius started, “I’m sorry—”
Gen held up a hand to stop him.
“Can’t you understand why I don’t want you yapping about her name everywhere?” Gen asked, exasperated. She shook her head and scoffed. “I don’t even know why I thought you would understand. You wouldn’t.”
Cassius did understand, even though he only reached that understanding right before he opened his mouth.
“Gen—” Cassius started. But she was on a roll.
“You never think, Cass,” Gen sneered. “It’s always about Cassius Grey. It’s always about you. You’re a real arse sometimes. Do you ever think about how the things you say affect people?”
Cassius frowned. “I said I was sorry—”
“Apologies won’t change anything.”
“But—”
Cassius’ frown deepened. Gen always did this. He agreed she had a right to be upset this time, but she never let people finish their apologies and would ice them out for weeks after. Then when asked why, she would say they didn’t apologise. And she acted this way even when she was in the wrong.
“She’s sort of right, y’know?” Lissy said. “Saying sorry won’t change it.”
Cassius rather angrily noted Lisette would make matters worse by always agreeing with Gen. He understood, because he would do the same for George, and George would do the same for him. He definitely understood that some arguments needed to be let go for the sake of cohabitation, but Lisette took it to another level. No matter what Gen said, she would nod or give a word of support. At least he and George had limits.
What he couldn’t was understand why.
“Exactly,” Gen said. A smug smile stretched over her lips. “But I guess I shouldn’t have expected anything different.”
“Look who’s talking,” Cassius snapped. “Clearly you’ve lost the plot since you think I’m the self-centred one here.”
“I haven't lost the plot,” Gen replied. Her accent got thicker. “I just see things for what they are.”
Cassius’ annoyance mounted. He grumbled and fanned himself furiously. The warmth from before had turned into a fire, and definitely not a good one.
“By gum,” Gen said, fanning herself. “It’s maftin’ in here.”
“Oh, you’re just noticing?” Cassius snapped. “I guess you’re not just self-centred, you’re also daft.”
“Cass!” Lissy admonished. “Now you’ve gone too far.”
“Really?” Cassius said incredulously. “I’ll show you too far.”
He glared at them both and imagined Gen’s expensive leather tote bag bursting into flame. He would have imagined it blowing up outright, but he decided to be nice and give her a chance to put out the flames.
Gen and Lissy screamed as flames erupted from the bottom of the bag. Gen threw it on the ground.
“Cass, stop!” Gen yelled. She pulled out a short stick—her wand—from her blazer pocket and aimed it at the bag.
Cass folded his arms. “No.”
Gen and Lissy glared at him.
“Cass,” Lissy warned.
Cassius raised an eyebrow. “D’you want me to do the same to your backpack?”
Lisette gave him a hurt look, but still shook her head. She offered to try and put out the flames with her foot, but Gen held up a hand with a fiercely defiant look on her face.
Gen stared hard at the bag, said two words in French and a powerful blast of water shot out from the tip of her wand, dousing the flames that left only a small column of smoke to show they were ever there.
Then, as soon as the smoke cleared, Gen aimed the jet of water at Cassius, and kept it aimed at him for a long time. He was soaked from head to toe by the time the water had stopped.
Lissy and Gen chuckled with their hands clasped over their mouths as Cassius wiped the water from his face with a completely neutral expression, but his internal thoughts raged like the fire he now wished he set on Gen’s head.
Lissy noticed. He hated her empathetic magic, mostly because it meant he couldn’t keep a secret or lie. It would have upset him, but he wasn’t necessarily trying to hide his emotions at that moment.
“Okay, Cass, calm down,” Lissy pleaded. “Gen, let’s calm down. Dry him off.”
“Why should I?” Gen hissed. “He’s the berk here, not me. And I’ll definitely not dry him off if my bag’s damaged.”
“That ugly thing?” Cassius asked. “I’d be doing you a favour.”
Gen glared at him and aimed her wand at him again. White sparks blossomed from the tip, like she was charging up a firecracker. Cassius kept his neutral expression and kept calm. Electricity was connected to fire, and fire was one thing Cassius knew how to control well.
“Stop!” Lissy yelled. “Gen, just check your bag.”
Gen gingerly picked up her bag and noticed there was no damage to the ridiculously expensive leather. Cassius wished he actually made it a damaging spell, but the poor animal that died to make that ugly, green, monstrosity of a bag didn’t deserve to be further disgraced.
“Oh,” Gen said, turning it over. “My bag is fine.”
“So what exactly were you trying to tell me about Helena, again?” Cassius asked. His tone dripped with so much annoyance and anger it could’ve drowned all three of them in the hallway.
Wait, hallway, Cassius thought. I forgot about class. Shoot.
Gen opened her mouth, no doubt to hiss at Cassius for daring to mention the untouchable Helena Wallis by name once again, as if saying her name three times would summon her right from the middle of her arithmetics class—and he only knew that because Gen just had to tell both Cassius and Lissy about Helena’s daily timetable.
But Lissy read his mind and spoke before the sound could even leave Gen’s lips.
“We’re late for class,” Lissy said, panicked. “Miss Delaney is going to bury us under the yarrows!”
The three teens stared at each other in turn, and bolted down the way they were walking before. Gen pushed Cassius, which would have normally tumbled him to the ground, but his body had gotten far more solid over the summer, and he barely stumbled.
As the rush of movement pushed Cassius’ tie and hair around and made them flap in the wind, he couldn’t help but think of two things.
First, hanging out at lunch would be extremely uncomfortable until Gen calmed down or decided she needed something from him. Second, the water may have cooled him down from the heat outside, but it washed away all of his hair gel. His hair had already started sticking up.
He vowed to get Gen back for that.

‘Can you go pick Hércules up?’
‘Me? Why me?’
‘Because you’re also his older sister?’
Oh. True. Sometimes Cass forgot her and Hércules weren’t the same age, since they behaved pretty much like twins. Tweedledee and Tweedledum. Or, if you wanted something slightly more national, as the siblings were Spanish… Zipi and Zape.
She nodded in Andro’s direction, watching as she disappeared.
It was weird for Cass to feel that she was so close to Hércules, who was two years her junior, and to see Andro so, so far, even if she was merely a year older. So distant. Like something that you see is there but can’t quite grasp, like grains of sand escaping your closed fist at the Beach, doing it so at an alarming rate…
She sighed. It wasn’t like it was Andro’s fault. The black-haired woman just acted that way because her parents had never really stepped up and proven worthy of the title of mum and dad. Just those words made Cass cringe. Mum. Dad. People you could look at, recognize certain features from: the slanted eyes belonged to Fernando, the crooked grin was clearly María’s, as were the red curls that only Cass had inherited… but the moment they opened their mouths and tried their hardest to strike a conversation: nothing. A blank page, waiting to be filled.
They had shared so many moments, spent so many years in the same home. But they were strangers.
That’s why Andro and her hadn’t moved to the student’s residence hall, and were still living at the family house. Because Hérc had to be in high school for a couple of years more and they couldn’t really do that to him, leave him alone with the ghosts that once had been their loving parents.
Substance abuse did that to you.
She didn’t have class until after lunch, so she went to the library, carrying a pink backpack in one shoulder, filled to the brim with painting tools, with notebooks that she used both for drawing and taking notes, and a pencil case. She didn’t really use her laptop, preferring to do things the traditional way. And… also, she was very scatterbrained. Cass was certain that if she had brought a computer, she would end up the class watching the weirdest YouTube videos about urban legends and random fun facts she had no one to tell them to.
But… that wasn’t completely right, was it?
Cass had always been a loner. For the entirety of high school, and starting university hadn’t really changed that fact. It was not like she didn’t have any friends. She did, just very few of them, and ones she had a pretty impersonal relationship with. Her only real connections in this world were Hércules, Andro and their friend Airi, or so it had been up until a few months ago, when she had met Alex.
Curious circumstances, that which had brought them together. A group of students from the Communications major had appeared a random day in Cass’ drawing class, asking if someone could help them with a quick issue. They were doing a video on the university, and needed a person who could do an illustration for the cover. Something that would draw attention, something that would make people immediately click on it, but that was true to the spirit of the institution.
Luck had it, Cass had just had a bad experience with one of her teachers, because he had criticized one of her drawings for being too shocking, too attention grabbing, and had asked her to stay in line because the dean doesn’t approve of this sort of things…
By the end of that day, those Communications students had a digital drawing sent to their emails, greatly inspired by 1984, George Orwell’s book: a picture of the university dean in a huge TV, sporting a mustache not unlike Hitler’s, and dozens of students dressed in prison uniforms, crying and begging and throwing money in the air, all because they wanted a piece of paper in which the word ‘Degree’ could be read.
Of course, they hadn’t chosen it. But Alex and her had become friends ever since.
Cass wouldn’t say it out loud, but she liked him. She liked him very, very much. But he was not into her – that much was painfully obvious. They had even slept together a few times, after parties that had gotten out of control… but just slept. They had both woken up in each other arms, their bodies still covered with the same number of clothes they had the night before. There had been some moments something deep inside of Cass had screamed yes, yes, yes, now is the time, first kiss… but no. Nothing.
It was fine, however. Having him as a friend was better than not having him in her life at all.
And it was not like she was going to confess out loud and ruin the whole thing.
And yet… the idea of it was always lingering, floating around her, especially when she saw him. Like now, in the library, with his headphones on, hunched over a computer, working on some project whose deadline was approaching at vertiginous speed, probably.
Cass approached him from behind. She thought about scaring him, but if she did, she would undoubtedly get scolded by the librarian or any of the many students around. So she contented herself with lightly tapping his shoulder, giving him a kiss in the cheek before plummeting to the chair next to him, leaving her backpack on the table.
‘Guess who has to go pick up her little brother after class?’ Cass pointed to herself, rolling her eyes. ‘Andro can’t. Probably sleeping with some substitute teacher, or something.’ She chuckled, moving her body so that it was closer to his, placing her chin on his shoulder to get a view of his laptop’s screen.
‘What are you doing?’
Her fingers, covered in dry paint, were now playing with his blond curls. Anyone who saw them would have thought they were a couple… better, Cass thought to herself, because she knew the moment Alex found a girlfriend would be a very, very, very sad day for her.
Cass wasn’t stupid. He was incredibly handsome. He was kind, generous, caring, intelligent, had a tragic backstory, a beautiful singing voice and played almost any instrument. He was about to be done with university, too. All of these things made him the perfect boy, and a lot of other girls seemed to think so, too.
She had heard them whisper around the corridors. In parties, they always tried to approach him. Why, exactly, he preferred spending time with her than with them, Cass didn’t quite know, but she was thankful for it.
‘Did you listen to Vessel’s show yesterday?’
Vessel was the host of a radio show in the university radio. He ran the night slot, where he talked about random stuff, played some weird and cryptic music. Cass had kind of started listening to it as a joke, but now, she didn’t miss a day. She hate-listened to it, because she disagreed with most of the young man’s opinions about music. How dared he play Katatonia at three in the morning, when she was studying for exams, instead of something a little bit more cheerful, a little bit more… alive!?
‘I called again. He probably hates me by now.’ Cass showed her shark-like grin, full of teeth, cheeky, and slightly lopsided. ‘I just wish I knew who he was! He does have a nice voice. I would love to share a coffee with him.’
Cass shrugged. She had told this to Airi and Andro earlier that morning, and both had agreed that next time she called she needed to ask him on a date.
‘But Alex…’
‘This has been going on for months! Are you going to confess?’
‘And ruin our friendship? Nuh uh. Plus, I’ve told you this, I don’t think he likes me…’
‘I mean, you have a point. If he did, he would have tried something with you already. All the more reason to ask this Vessel guy out.’
Maybe she actually would. Why not? She didn’t think she would like him as much as she liked Alex, but well… perhaps she could try, see if something came out of it.

Fleur de Louve Month Day 4: Soulmates AU
Prompt: Stargazing - 886 words
They’re not soulmates.
Sarah’s soulmate is dead, her mark a faded white line on her wrist, a fleur de lis to go with the small boat on her husband’s arm. They’d had a good life together - two kids, a house, everything she ever dreamed of, but cancer is cancer and it’s just how the world works, sometimes.
She misses George, always. Sometimes she catches herself tracing her soulmark with gentle fingers, smiling down at it and hoping George is somewhere better, healthy and happy and not miserable with chemotherapy.
They’re not soulmates.
James - she refuses to call a grown man Bucky - shows up in Delacroix and says hi, Sarah and smiles at her, and she can’t help smiling back. He’s charming, charismatic, handsome, and she thinks that perhaps he might be what she’s looking for…
But he’s not her soulmate.
If he has a mark, she’s never seen it. When he steps out of the bathroom, a towel wrapped around his waist, steam billowing out behind him, she catches herself scanning his chest, looking for the telltale bright colours of a soulmark. Instead she finds only smooth skin, still damp, rivulets of water streaming down his chest and onto his abs, and she wants.
He gives her a soft smile, says excuse me, and steps back into the guest bedroom to change. Her eyes follow him until the door closes, and she wonders what the fuck she is doing.
Because he’s not her soulmate.
When she was a little girl, her mama sat her down and explained the fleur de lis on her arm, told her that most people hide their marks until they find the one. Soulmates are a precious thing, a cherished thing. George was the love of her life, her second half, but he’s gone now. Is she allowed to love again?
If he’s not her soulmate?
It happens slowly. James comes to Delacroix more often, stops using Sam as an excuse to be around her. He plays with AJ and Cass and helps them with their homework and makes dinner in her kitchen - his cooking skills are not a product of his time, thank god - and gives her a goddamn break, and she thinks that it might work.
Even if he’s not her soulmate.
They kiss the first time in her kitchen, soft and chaste and almost an afterthought. It feels natural, so natural that the enormity of the moment doesn’t hit her until after.
James’ eyes widen and he goes very still. “I’m sorry,” he blurts. “God, I-”
“Don’t be,” she says, and kisses him again.
Even though he’s not her soulmate.
Things happen a lot faster after that. James starts taking up more space in her life, fitting in with her and AJ and Cass as if he’s always been there. They kiss often, unabashedly, publicly, and she feels wanted. He tells her he loves her for the first time at the docks, and she says it back without thinking, because she does love him, maybe she always has, and loving James is the most natural thing in the world.
Even though he’s not her soulmate.
They make love for the first time when AJ and Cass are with George’s parents for a weekend, the house silent around them, and he touches her reverently, carefully, runs pale hands down her dark skin and kisses her deeply like there’s nothing else he’d rather be doing. He kisses the stretch marks on her stomach, down to the matching ones on her thighs, spends a hell of a lot of time between them doing ungentlemanly things, and by the end she’s gasping for breath and clutching her hands in his hair and he’s got a self-satisfied smirk on his face.
He tells her he loves her, over and over and over again as they rock together, gentle and passionate, slow, so goddamn good that she’s seeing stars.
After, she sees his mark for the first time. Faded white on his left hip bone, a small spider. She traces it with her fingers and he doesn’t stop her.
“Does it bother you?” she asks. “That we’re not soulmates.”
James smiles softly at her and kisses her hair. “Not at all,” he says, and she believes it with her whole heart.
They’re not soulmates.
They lay under the stars that night, wrapped in blankets, pointing out constellations to each other. He knows some she doesn’t, she knows some he doesn’t. It’s fun, carefree, the cool breeze off the water making it easy to slip under his arm, to curl into the warmth of him. He’s strong and sure and steady, lets her lean on him without ever making her feel less for it, and she thinks that maybe, this is exactly what she needs right now.
He traces the fleur de lis on her wrist with gentle fingers and she lets him. The touch is light, soothing, and she draws comfort from the calluses on his fingertips scratching against her delicate skin.
“I’ll always love him,” she says.
“I know,” Bucky says. “And I’ll always love her. But I can love you, too. It’s not a limited resource.”
She thinks that’s kind of beautiful.
Even if they’re not soulmates.

A tiny thesis on platonic love...
And why destiel shippers are so ignorant to it.
There was a show called Being Human (UK) years ago and it was about a werewolf a vampire and a ghost that were roommates and trying to navigate the world and find their place. It was hilarious and also moving, a brilliant and witty supernatural comedy/drama.
The werewolf and vampire, George and Mitchell, were best friends, they went through so much, helped each other, hated each other at times but always supported one another as difficult as things got, they always cared, deep down.
Anyway to cut it short in series 3, Mitchell who had struggled with drinking blood as he tried desperately to fit in with humans, went too far, killed too many, was gonna get dragged back into the darkness. The prophecy was a werewolf would kill him and we all thought it would be another one in the show. But it wasn’t. It was George in the end who killed his best friend. Mitchell initially asked him to kill him and George did it to release him and to protect people. It was mercy.
In the scene linked here George is clearly emotional and this is the hardest thing he’s ever had to do. He tells his friend “I’m doing this because I love you.” So that Mitchell will understand the other reasons why, it’s not just because he’s trying to protect humans, it’s to end Mitchell’s suffering.
This was 2011 I would have been on Tumblr but anyway I don’t remember people saying ‘oh they were romantically in love it’s a confession blah blah’ NO because platonic love is a thing that exists and it’s beautiful and underrated and not nearly portrayed in enough media. I always loved this moment between them it was devastating but emotionally raw and a fitting end for their particular journey.
Now I very much dislike the destiel scene in 15x18 it had bad dialogue and came out of nowhere but tbh makes more sense as a brotherly love thing.
And the main take from Supernatural is that platonic love wins. Sam and Dean’s bond is everything (and though it’s more complex and deep than possibly a lot of other portrayed platonic love) in canon, we got the most beautiful platonic love between them. It’s so powerful, such an important thing for aces and anyone who values those relationships above romance. The fact we got that is incredibly important and special. Sam and Dean chose each other AGAIN and with free will stayed together and would have if not for the tragedy of hunting.
My main point I’m trying to reach is that I find it so upsetting and disappointing that people cannot value platonic love (I dislike Cass relationship with Dean but would 100% respect people who valued it as a platonic friendship and thats the confession we got imo)
The confession by Dean to Sam in the barn was deeply moving, raw and also platonic but on another level because their bond and love for one another exceeded everything else in their lives.
It’s the devaluing of platonic love I dislike and I hate destiel being pushed as something romantic (fine if shippers did that in peace and on A03 with no abuse of tags or fans and cast but they invade everything and claim it was canon) NO. In canon it was platonic love (mostly from Cass side) and not anywhere near as deep as Sam and Dean’s of course, but platonic love.is no less valuable. It’s sad that destiel shippers can’t see any other type of love than romantic/sexual, that those are the only ones worth having.
The Being Human scene I linked makes me cry to this day. Platonic love is kind of indefinable but I am so proud and grateful that Supernatural ended with that message, that soulmates can be brothers, that their love for each other was so strong it both broke and made the world and themselves a thousand times.

Boom!
BOOM!
George looked up from the wires of the disassembled phone that lay in front of him. He had concentrated to finally crack its hard, plastic outer shell, but now his focus had shattered like the glass of the screen.
He glared at the door of his dorm room.
“Dammit, Cass! What did you do?”
His roommate, Cassius, ran into the room with dirty grey spots all over his face. George noticed it looked suspiciously like ash. Some of it coated his hair, turning it from light brown to almost black. All the hair product he had put into it earlier in the morning for school to tame it was gone.
George thought he looked very much like a scarecrow. A spooked one.
“Something accidentally blew up,” Cassius said, slamming the door behind him. “It wasn’t me though.”
George crossed his arms. “Then who was it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Cass—”
“Who even says ‘dammit’?” Cassius wondered. He played up his London accent for this bit.
“You’re so American.”
George rolled his eyes. “Shut up.”
A stern male voice echoed through the halls of their school house.
“Cassius Grey!” Their assistant house parent, Flint Lockhurst bellowed. “Get down to this kitchen at once!”
Cassius’ mouth went into a small ‘o’, before he swore and bolted towards his wardrobe and shut himself in.
“George, you have to hide me!” He said, his voice muffled by the thick oak wood the door was made out of.
George groaned and face-palmed.
“I hate you.”
Careful to be light on his toes, George kicked the phone pieces firmly under the heavy wooden desk and plucked a red leather-bound book off of his shelf. The name, written on the spine in gold letters, was Marceline. The cursive style reminded him of his aunt; a tall, airy and rich Englishwoman, who introduced him to classics like the one he just picked up.
He settled himself into bed right on top of his dark brown, fluffy duvet, and opened Marceline to about three-fourths of the way through. If the plan to make him look studious was to be believable, he had to pretend.
I’ll just read the rest later, he thought.
He waited in faux contemplative silence until Mr. Lockhurst’s heavy footsteps paused for a moment outside his dorm room. A loud crack sounded before the door was forced open.
“Evening, Mr. Lockhurst,” he said, calmly, as if Lockhurst hadn’t just kicked a hole in his door.
Lockhurst was not-so-affectionately called ‘the Ogre’ by three-fourths of the boys in his house, Pendleton. Lockhurst had a chest the length of two wooden barrels, a head the size of a massive basketball—it was also completely bald, and it reflected all the light wherever he went to blinding proportions. He had massive tree-trunk-like arms and legs, and he was six-foot-four.
He sneered at George, his eyes bulging, face red, and teeth yellow.
“Do you want me to tell you about my book?” he asked with a touch of fake innocence. “It’s a rather riveting tale of—"
“Where. Is. Cassius?” Mr. Lockhurst punctuated each word with a grunt.
“I don’t know.” George took a breath. “Sir.”
“You liar!” he yelled. For such a big man, Lockhurst moved fast. Before George knew it, his house wear, a black t-shirt with blue sleeves and the school crest sewn on the left of his chest, was bunched up in Lockhurst’s hand by the neck.
Lockhurst shook him like a ragdoll and yelled in his face once again. George winced as he felt the full force of Lockhurst’s hot garlic breath right in his face, and droplets of angry spittle landed on his cheeks.
“I’m not lying,” he said, calmly. “He ran in here first and then ran off.”
“To where!”
George took a deep breath and closed his eyes. A flash of annoyance went through him.
“I don’t know,” he forced out through his teeth. “Now let go.”
George gripped Mr. Lockhurst’s thick wrist and twisted. The older man yowled in pain and dropped George onto the ground. He landed with a loud ‘oof’, right on his bottom.
“You…” Mr. Lockhurst spat. His eyes bulged further. He looked like he was going to burst. “You… Reynolds! I’ll get you!”
Lockhurst lunged towards George again, but suddenly, Cassius burst out of his wardrobe with a loud war cry.
“Yah!”
He jumped on Lockhurst’s back and sent them both tumbling to the hard and unforgiving blue carpeted floor of the room, with Cassius sprawled on Lockhurst’s back. He reached back, grabbed Cassius by his shirt and threw him to the ground. Lockhurst rose his fist over Cassius’s head, but George gave him a heavy kick to the head before he could swing.
Lockhurst collapsed on his back in a heaving, wheezing mess. His skin was red, and his eyes bulged. Veins were visible underneath his skin.
He screamed, and then exploded into a ball of pink, flesh-coloured confetti. There was no blood, nor gore.
George groaned. “We broke Lockhurst again! Look what you did!”
“Relax, yeah?” Cassius said. “We can put him back together.”
“The whole house probably heard.”
“Yeah, and they’ll probably thank us. No Lockhurst for a week.”
“But we’ll still have to answer to Mr. Isely-Lyle.”
“Don’t get your knickers in a twist,” Cassius drawled in his London accent. “We’ll be fine.”
“If you get me in trouble…”
“No trouble. I owe you.”

Dick Grayson received condolences wherever he went. Recently, people in ‘Haven and on the force about everything he lost during the Blockbuster debacle (and he lost a lot.) Press and the public turning their faces down in a mask of sorrow after Jason, telling him it must have been so hard for him to lose a brother. And before that, when he first came to live with Bruce, every socialite looking at him through diamond-studded fingers wrapped around a bubbly champagne glass, telling him how sorry they were he lost his parents, how difficult it must have been to see them fall, how much he misses his family.
For once, they were right. Even after all these years, Dick missed his family more than anything. Dya and Dat were his parents, of course he missed them. But other than Bruce, the elite of Gotham had a rigid definition of family, and it would take far too much energy for Dick to explain to them why they were wrong.
Haleé was an old man, gruff in the way most people like him were. He was the patriarch of their cobbled-together family, someone who built up his life’s dream with nothing but a couple euros, the calluses on his hands, an old performer’s cane, and a recipe for chili that his Cajun mother had given him. He clasped everyone on the shoulder and taught Dick how to captivate an audience with a couple gestures. And every time Bruce looked up at him, concealed pride in his eyes but a mouth barking at him to try again, to do better this time, Dick took a deep breath and reminded himself that Haleé had left with the circus.
Georges the Strongman was one of the few Frenchmen Dick had ever met, but he was under the impression they weren’t supposed to be so...large. Dya had scolded him disapprovingly, and told him that was rude. Dat had snorted and agreed with him. Then again, Dya was Rom and had been to France before, while Dat grew up in Turkmenistan and his first trip to Europe had been with the troupe, so Dya was probably right. Either way, Georges’ muscles were larger than Dick’s head and he used them to sweep Dick up in hugs. He could do handstands on Georges’ shoulders, and his deep, rumbling chuckles were a staple of Circ d’Haleé, often accompanied by Dick’s own breathless laughter. (The few times Dick managed to get Jason to actually laugh, he had to blink back memories. And whenever he used Jason’s shoulders as a springboard, both in the field and for fun, those same breathless giggles came out when he heard Jason’s indignant sputters and curses.)
Befrî and Cemre were the most talented acrobats and contortionists Dick had ever met. The main reason Dick himself was so flexible was the routines they had taught him, practicing them early in the morning with a couple other members of the circus. Befrî and Cemre were from Buraydah, and though they told absolutely grand stories to Dick all the time, they refused to go back. Their bodies were lean and quick and clever, their minds even more so. Sly comments and remarks had Dick bursting out in peals of laughter, their determination and dedication to their art pushing Dick to do the same. (Even though he often reminded everyone he wasn’t a contortionist, it was always worth it to see his friends’ faces when he pulled his limbs into a position more than a touch unnatural.) Dick often caught Befrî in Tim’s clever little smirk, and Cemre’s eyes were narrowed in determination as he worked on a case. Then Dick blinked, and Tim was just Tim again.
Guillermina was just a teenager, but she could swallow fire. Dick remembered the night he met her. A stowaway from Mexico, she stumbled around Egypt, lost in a foreign land, before coming across Circ d’Haleé. Haleé had said, in that gruff manner of his, their troop was closed for the night and would not be accepting questions or paparazzo. In response, Guillermina stuck flames down her throat and juggled broken beer bottles she found on the floor, then begged in a hoarse voice, if she couldn’t stay could she at least have a meal. Haleé had stared at her, then asked if she went by Guillermina or Mina. She said neither, she went by Yiye, and after eavesdropping on the conversation, Dick had run up to give her a hug. Yiye was bold and reckless and utterly unafraid of the world, and Dick adored her. She taught Dick to juggle and she taught Dick to ride a unicycle and she taught Dick to throw his entire body and passion into everything he did. Whenever Dick found himself about to scold Damian for his daredevil, he caught sight of Yiye’s fire in his eyes, and found himself getting strung along.
There was a fortune teller in Circ d’Haleé. She went by Tsetvanya, except when she went by Apolonia, expect when she went by Mieczysław. (Isn’t Mieczysław a boy’s name? Dick had asked. She had laughed and said yes, yes it was.) She was Polish, except when she said she was swore up and down she was born and raised in Andorra, except when she said lightly she had always traveled and had long since had her roots ripped out. (An American had once asked if that made her a gypsy. He had meant it as some sort of backwards compliment. No one else even had to intervene because she had slapped him hard enough for her rings to cut into his face and make him bleed. Dya pulled the man away and explained, sternly, how rude that was. Dick doubts the man ever visited the Middle East again.) Whoever the fortune teller was, no matter what lies dripped from her lips, she still found the time to show Dick her hand-painted Tarot cards, to tell him stories, to warn him of the world’s dangers everyone else shielded him from. Her bones were brittle and her makeup was extravagant and her hugs were bony and every time someone brought up Alfred’s vast knowledge of the life and fierce protectiveness and general worldliness, Dick smiled to himself and thought, I think Alfred may have a contender.
Emilie the Lion tamer could read Dick as well as Cass and Raymond may have just worked behind the scenes but his homemade meals made everyone gather together just like Steph making breakfast and Tanuja’s kindness towards the troop and mischievousness towards the crowds was so much like Duke that it hurt. Dick had warred with himself over using Bruce’s and the League’s resources to find them, track them, check if they were okay, see if they remembered him. He always backed down.
They say after you lose someone, you can see signs of them everywhere you go, in the people you meet. Dick was constantly surrounded by his family, both versions of them, and the juxtaposition made him laugh, made him cry, made him miss Circ d’Haleé like a physical ache, made him beyond relieved he wasn’t with them anymore.
Because that night, Dick didn’t just lose his Dya and Dat, didn’t just loose his parents. He lost his entire family.
*bangs pots and pans together* IF YOU’RE GONNA WRITE ROM DICK GRAYSON FUCKING DO IT RIGHT. or, not really Rom, just not classically American in general. anyway, i bet you could guess how i had no idea how to end this thing. but here it is.

Chapter Two - The Pink Toad
Dean woke up, shivering slightly in the drafty dormitories – with all the magic in Hogwarts he thought someone would have taken the initiative to make the castle warmer. He was in a bad mood already and for a moment he couldn’t think why and then, it hit him like a ton of bricks. The 5th year Gryffindors and Slytherins were going to be having their first lesson with Umbridge in Defence Against the Dark Arts. To hear other people talk about it, it seemed like she didn’t know what she was doing, they said that she should have stayed at the Ministry.
He mulled over his thoughts as he walked over to the window and watched the quiet grounds begin to stir beneath the glow of the rising sun. Dean couldn’t deal with another shit Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor. Dumbledore should have brought Lupin back – even if he was a werewolf – he had been the best Professor they’d ever had.
Though, it wasn’t all that bad, today Quidditch try outs were taking place tonight, he had wanted to try out for the team last year but all of the matches had been cancelled due to the Triwizard Tournament. He was itching to climb onto his broom and zip through the late summer air. Once Seamus was awake – he didn’t say a word to Dean, Seamus was the worst person ever in the morning – they both got dressed and made their way to The Great Hall. Dean’s insides were already aching with hunger.
Dean perked up even more when he smelled all the amazing breakfast food and he sat by Fred and George Weasley, piling toast and bacon onto his plate.
“You trying out for the team then, Thomas?” Fred asked – or it might have been George – the twins both had identical smirks on their faces. The Weasley twins had been on the Quidditch team since Dean’s first year, they were extraordinary beaters.
“Of course,” Dean grinned, feeling excitement course through his body, “tonight’s try outs are going to be a blast!”
“You guys haven’t heard?” Dean looked around at the sound of a voice and his heart dropped when he saw Harry nervously running his fingers through his hair, “the Slytherins must have gotten wind of our try outs tonight because they booked the pitch before Angelina had the chance. Our try outs have been pushed to Saturday,” he scowled.
“What?” the four boys gasped in horror and Dean looked over at the Slytherin table.
Cass was laughing with her friends as she raised a mug to her lips; her eyes flickered over to Dean for a moment before she looked back at her friends. She looked radiant and beautiful, like she didn’t have a care in the world and that pissed Dean off, he turned back to his friends with a frown.
“I bet that Cass had something to do with this, this is so like her,” he moodily stabbed at his food.
Seamus rolled his eyes as he shoved a piece of bacon into his mouth, “mate,” he started with his voice muffled, “you say that you don’t give a shit about her but, Merlin, I think you’re obsessed. Not everything that happens is her fault.”
In the back of Dean’s mind he knew himself that Seamus was right and it had probably had nothing to do with Cass. However, he was still so annoyed with her that he wouldn’t even entertain that idea.
On their way to class, Dean’s eyes impatiently searched through the sea of people in the corridor, “this isn’t a good idea mate,” Seamus scoffed.
“Please, just give us a second, yeah?” he offered his best mate a smile before going back to the task at hand and he spotted Cass as she was about to walk into class.
“Oi, Cass!” he called out to her, making her stop in her track and she gave him a surprised look as he caught up with her, “why would your team book the damn pitch for tonight? We were supposed to have our try outs.”
Cass rolled her eyes and Dean noticed the glimmer of disappointment in them and he almost felt guilty, “do I look like the team captain? Everything that goes wrong in your life isn’t my fault you know,” she hissed before storming into the classroom.
“Told ya,” Seamus snickered.
Umbridge hadn’t come down from her office yet so Dean contented himself with doodling a lion devouring a snake while Lavender and Parvati made a bird out of paper and had charmed it to soar through the air. As it flew over to Dean and Seamus, Dean laughed, “go on, Seamus. Hit it!” he goaded his best friend and Seamus landed a successful hit, blowing it off course. In the next second, it burst into flames making the class jump.
Dean scowled as a toad like woman stood at the front of the class wearing the ugliest shade of pink ever seen. He wrinkled his nose in disgust as a sickly sweet perfume smell wafted towards him. Umbridge started like all the other teaches had by explaining the importance of OWLS, before she handed out a beginners handbook.
“Your introduction to this subject has been uneven, probably due to the fact that you’ve had half breeds teaching you and whatnot,” there was mirth in her voice and it annoyed Dean massively.
“If you must know, Professor Lupin was the best teacher we’ve ever had. So what if he’s a werewolf?” most of the class murmured in agreement and Dean clenched his teeth in anger as Umbridge gave him a sweet smile.
“That will be five points from Gryffindor, Mr Thomas,” she let out a high pitched laugh that went right through Dean.
“Dean is right though! How is it Remus’ fault that he got bitten? He didn’t ask for that to happen! It shouldn’t make it impossible for him to get a job, he’s not dangerous,” Cass piped up.
Dean whirled around to look at her; her usually warm eyes were hard as she stared at Umbridge with a furious expression. Dean agreed with Cass though he hated to admit it and would never say it out loud. Cass made eye contact with Dean and her eyes softened as she smiled at him gratefully. Dean gulped and looked away.
Umbridge smirked as her nostrils flared but she didn’t tell Cass off. Instead, she smiled at a couple of people on the front row who had got their wands out, “oh, you can put those away, my dears.”
“We’re not going to be using magic?” Ron mumbled, his voice held all of the confusion that everyone else was feeling.
“Why on earth would you need to use magic dear?” she let out another annoying high pitched laugh.
“Oh, of course,” Harry gasped as he slapped a hand against his forehead, “because when Voldemort comes after all of us, the last thing we’ll need to know is defensive magic, dear me, the thought of it. Ron, how could you ask such a silly question?” sarcasm laced Harry’s voice, making Dean smirk to himself as everyone waited for Umbridge’s response with baited breath.
Umbridge barely flinched at the use of You-Know-Who’s real name and her sickly sweet smile almost faltered, “you and your tall tales, Mr Potter. The Ministry would be protecting everyone if the Dark Lord was back.”
Dean glanced over at Harry when he let out a scoff to see that Harry had his hands on the table, clenching his fists, “so, Cedric Diggory spontaneously combusted did he?” Harry’s tone was dry as he glared at Umbridge, “Voldemort killed him! And you’re an idiot for not admitting it!”
Someone near the back of the room gasped at Harry’s words and everyone got ready to watch Umbridge murder Harry. Umbridge’s face was drained of colour as she scrawled on a piece of parchment and simply said in a steady voice, “come here, Mr Potter,” when Harry stormed up to her desk, she gave him the parchment, “take this to Professor McGonagall, off you go dear,” Harry scoffed as he snatched it off her and stormed out of the room, not looking back.
The rest of the lesson continued in silence, nobody dared to speak to one another. At the end of the class, Cass caught up with Dean, “intense huh?”
Dean was still reeling from the shock of Harry’s words that he momentarily forgot the bitterness he had towards her, “yeah,” he laughed, scuffing his shoe against the floor.
“It was nice of you to speak up for Remus,” she smiled, leaning against the cold stone wall.
Dean shrugged nonchalantly as his cheeks grew hot and he tried to ignore the peaceful feeling in his chest, “thought it was only fair to defend the guy when he wasn’t there to defend himself,” he cleared his throat, “it was good of you to speak up for him too.”
“I would do anything and say anything for the people that I care about,” she looked up at him from beneath her eyelashes as she bit her lower lip and Dean swallowed nervously, “I thought you would know that by now,” she gave him a small smile and pushed off from the wall, “see you around,” she nodded at him and then she was off, walking down the corridor with Astoria.
“So, the both of you can have a civil conversation without biting each other’s head off,” Seamus smirked.
------------------------------------
As you stood with your back against the Quidditch stands you shivered in the freezing evening air as you watched the try outs, waiting for your turn to try out for the position of Keeper. Your teeth chattered as you stuck your hands in the inside of your coat and pulled the letter from your dad out of the inside pocket. You smiled down at the piece of parchment as you read over the words again in the perfect script. He was wishing you luck at the try outs, he knew how important Quidditch was to you.
All you wanted to do was make him proud, you knew that Harry made him proud but Harry had that effect on the adults in his life who loved him. It seemed so easy for him, he was a hero. You just wanted to make Sirius proud of who you were. Your breath came out as smoke as you watched your housemates zip through the sky in all directions. All you wanted to do was zip through the sky with them; hopefully it would warm you up. It was strange that Draco wasn’t trying out this year; he loved a bit of attention.
You jumped slightly as you felt warmth against your elbow and you glanced to the side to see Astoria holding a steaming cup of something hot, “this is for you, you look freezing,” she laughed as she passed you the cup.
You grinned at her as you lifted the cup to your lips and swallowed down the hot chocolate, humming at the thickness of it, it burned your tongue slightly but you didn’t care all that much, you were just thankful for the heat, “thank you so much,” you licked your lips as the hot drink warmed your insides, “what are you doing here? You hate Quidditch,” you narrowed your eyes as you realised just why she was here, “Draco’s not playing this year, sorry to disappoint you,” you laughed as she rolled her eyes.
“I’m not here for him Cass, I’m here for you. I know that I hate Quidditch, just don’t see the point of it all but I know how much you love it and you’re my best friend, so I came here to support you.”
Astoria’s words were so sweet and kind that you threw your arms around her in a tight hug, “I love you, you’re amazing. You know that?”
“Of course I know that,” she laughed, winking at you as she linked your arm through yours and leaned her head on your shoulder, “uh oh, incoming.”
You bit your lip as Dean, Harry, Seamus and Ron were coming out of the castle heading for the stands behind you. It seemed as though Harry and Seamus had put aside their rivalry in the name of Quidditch, the thought made you roll your eyes. What were they doing here? Were they here to sabotage you?
“What the hell are you guys doing here?” you turned around to face the Gryffindor boys, shouting against the howling wind.
Dean smirked, just enough for his dimples to be on display and even from here you could see his eyes flash with an emotion that you didn’t recognise, “I’ve missed out on Quidditch for the past two years, I’m not waiting till Saturday to be able to watch some! It’s got nothing to do with you,” he raised an eyebrow at you as he slouched against his chair, making you scowl at him.
Harry laughed as he shot you a smile, “and we wanted to see what form your players were on!” he would never tell you outright but you knew he was here to offer you some support and you appreciated it. You shook your head at the boys before turning back to watch the try outs, painfully aware of their eyes on you.
Finally, the captain looked at you, “Cass? C’mon, let’s go!” Astoria gave you a supportive smile and a pat on your shoulder as you walked onto the pitch, mounting your broom as you soared through the air to guard the hoops.
The first couple of throws the captain directed at you were easy saves; there wasn’t much spin on the Quaffle so you could have saved it with your eyes closed. However, every time you made a mediocre save, you could hear Astoria screaming as if you had made an amazing save and it made you laugh, she really didn’t understand Quidditch. You didn’t feel the cold anymore; the adrenaline you felt made it all go away
“C’mon! Give me a challenge!” you shouted to the troll like boy who was hovering on his broom, holding the Quaffle, he smirked at you as he sent the ball hard and fast with a lot of spin on it.
You kicked, caught and booted the ball with the end of your broomstick, sending it back to him and every time he caught it with a taken aback look on his face. There was a save that you almost didn’t make, it was too far off to the side but you caught it between the tips of your fingers. You heard the small crowd below you gasp and you glanced down to see Dean looked impressed – though he would never admit it – it only made him more handsome.
By the end of try outs, it was no question that you had been the best Keeper, and you were looking forward to practise the following week. As you walked towards Astoria she grinned at you, throwing an arm around your shoulders, “that was amazing! I can’t believe that you’re my best friend.”
You rolled your eyes at her words but you couldn’t help but smile a little, as you walked back into the castle together, desperate to get out of the cold night air, “oi, Cass!” you whipped around as you heard Dean calling after you.
Astoria gasped a little in delight as Dean jogged towards you, a competitive glint in his eye, “Gryffindor are going to kick your arse in the first match,” you laughed and it felt like things were better between you and Dean.
However, as the rest of the boys ran up to you, Dean’s expression dropped and his eyes went hard and cold again. It was obvious that apart from the competitive banter, nothing had changed.

Deep End
John Shelby x Reader
Set in Series Three, 1924. John is 29, and Reader is 28.
“I don’t want this to break you, but I’ve got no one else to talk to.”
The kitchen was silent, completely and utterly, the opposite of usual, when you would have five small children screaming and causing mischief. Your hands were wrapped around a cooling mug of coffee, a cigarette dangling from your lips, a plate of uneaten plain toast in front of you, from hours ago, made by Polly, before she took the kids to hers. You couldn’t have them here, not tonight, not after the bombshell Poll had dropped on you this morning.
Well, perhaps ‘bombshell’ was not the right word. You’d had an inkling for weeks, one that you pushed out of your mind, stomach bubbling with stress (or morning sickness, maybe). Because, of course, some part of you knew that you were pregnant - of course you did, hell, you’d already had five of them. This, however, would be the first pregnancy you had cried about ; really, truly, sadly, cried about, since you discovered about the existence of Katie, on your sixteenth birthday. Katie, however, had turned into a surprise you became ecstatic about.
You couldn’t see that happening, this time, though.
You twisted the wedding ring on your finger, the one that you had taken off several times this week, telling yourself it was just because of how swollen your fingers were. It wasn’t, deep down, you knew that. For the first time in twelve years of marriage, you were suddenly thinking of not being married at all. You and John had had some horrific arguments over the years, but somehow, it was the not arguing that made you contemplate leaving John. The traitorous thoughts had been whirling in your head for a while, making you cry yourself to sleep in the cold empty bed half the time - because John never came home before the early morning anymore.
It was the long nights, the worry and the crippling fear, that his work would result in a terrible ending - with either he, or one of your children dead. It hadn’t ever been something you had thought so in depth about before, as the children grew up without incident ( Katie being thirteen in a few weeks ), but with the knowledge of a new baby, came the anxieties you always had when pregnant, but this time ten-fold. Your brain had been haunted all day, with images of your newborn being targeted by one of the many enemies the Shelby’s had, or taken like Charlie had been. It occurred to you, how naive you had been before, to let the children roam the street, alone. You couldn’t help but -
The door opened, loudly, creaking hinges that John had promised to fix months ago. You jumped in fright, hand almost reaching towards the cool gun that lay on the counter top, before you heard the familiar sound of John kicking off his shoes in the hall, making more of the familiar scuff marks on the wallpaper you’d picked out yourself when John first showed you this house, when he put his hands over your eyes, guided you down the street carefully, Katie, a small toddler at the point, hanging off his back. When he’d laughed, as you opened your eyes, given you the cold keys, when you’d cried with hormonal joy, throwing your arms around him. When he still had the time to be around his family, when you felt more like a treasure than a burden.
“Hey.” His voice was hoarse, like he’d yelled a lot today, and preoccupied, like his mind wasn’t really in the room.
You didn’t look up, surprised he was home so early, just swirled the tea around in your cup, watching the pale liquid move back and forth in little waves. Usually, you’d get up and put the kettle on the stove to warm, or pour a drink of whiskey, depending on the hour, but your ankles were sore and you felt sick, and most of all, your emotions were churning.
“Hey.” You spoke quietly, running your nail through the grains in the wooden table, dented from years of raucous family dinners.
You heard the clinking of a glass, the slight strain to reach the tallest shelf, where the liquor was kept, far enough to evade the grabby hands of the mischievous younger children.
“Where’s the kids?”
“Polly said she’d have them tonight.” You couldn’t stand staying sat, staying still, so you went to the fridge, began to pull out food that you could cook for dinner.
He let out a humoured snort. “God help her. They’ll fuckin’ destroy her house like they ‘ave ours.”
“Or maybe that’s you when you’re pissed off your head.” You snapped.
“What’s up with you?” His voice was half confused, half irritated. “You’ve been in a foul mood all week.”
You snorted, pulling out a frying pan from the jumbled cupboard, one of Edwards stuffed teddies falling out along with it, god knows why.
“I’m surprised you’ve noticed.”
“Hey.” His voice was quiet, hand tugging on your wrist gently. “What is it?”
You pulled away from him, tugging at the material of your dress absently, not able to meet his eye.
“I need to tell you.. Well, I need to talk to you.”
He laughed, but it was anxious. “What is it then? Come out with it.”
“I’m pregnant.” It was blunt, not said with tears or smiles or laughs. Said with a sad voice and blank eyes, and a heavy heart.
His mouth lifted up at the corners in a wide smile. Every single one of the kids, John had been overjoyed with, and you knew this one was the same.
“That’s what you’ve been upset about, eh? That’s good, ain’t it?”
He almost moved to hug you, but you turned away, throwing some vegetables into the pan.
“No. No, it’s really not, John.” Your voice cracked.
“Y/N, you’re scaring me , now.. What’s up - I thought you’d be happy-“
“How can I be happy, John, eh? I’m fucking exhausted. I’m tired, of running after the kids all day and all night because heaven forbid Edward sleeps through the night. Or George wets the bed and wakes up the other lads. Or Elizabeth has a bad dream. And you know, they all want you, but you’re never fucking here, and so I get it. And I get hit with the ‘where’s daddy?’ Over and over and over. And I can’t fucking tell them because I don’t know myself, do I? Should I tell them their dads at some whore house, or in London, or at Uncle Tommy’s, or Pols? Cause I surely don’t fucking know.”
Your words jumbled together, talking so fast you barely said a word, desperate to get the words out, off your chest.
“Would you prefer me not to work then? For us to live in this shitty house for the rest of our lives, with the kids crowded into two bedrooms?”
“This shitty house was enough for you, once.”
“This family was enough for you once. But clearly we’re all a burden to you, eh?” He was angry, but his eyes flickered, as if dreading your response.
“Don’t you say that! Don’t you say my children are a burden to me, John Shelby!”
“So it’s just me that is, then! Have you finally decided I’m not good enough, then? God knows your fucking mother tried to tell you enough times-“
“When have I ever said you’re not enough!”
“It was only time before you got sick of this life wasn’t it? Before you wished you had your old life back with your big fancy country house and your parents posh bloody titles, and-“ John continued, lighting a cigar, his hands shaking.
“I’ve never missed that! This is the life I chose, okay! You know what I do miss, John? I miss the old you. The one who would bring flowers home, or dance in the kitchen with me while the baby’s bottle was warming up, or take us on day trips to the country. I miss the husband who was there for me. Who didn’t take the risks that put our whole fucking family in danger.”
John was silent for a few moments, as you breathed heavily, your eyes full of tears, and not from the cooking onions. You heard him get up from the chair behind you, and you turned, to see him hold out a hand.
“Can I have this dance, then?” He spoke quietly.
You sniffled, wiping your nose with your hand, like a child, but took his hand all the same. Because it was John, and you could never resist John. Because you loved him, because you were loyal to him, because you wanted so desperately to keep the family you adored.
Your chests were close together, his heart beat - faster than usual - pressed against your ear as you cried quietly into his striped shirt.
“I can’t keep doing this. I can’t.”
“I know. I’m sorry. I know.” He spoke, hands running through your tangled hair.
“I just miss you. I just want you home.”
“Please stay. I’ll make it work, okay? I’ll be home more, I’ll help with the kids more - I’ll make it work. I’ll make you happy again.”
You nodded your head. You weren’t sure if everything was going to work out, or if you would be having this conversation in a few weeks time with a different outcome. But for now, with the promises from John, and his strong heartbeat in your ear, you knew you would stay.
Because, whether it be for an hour or for a month or for the rest of time, you had your husband back, the same boy you’d known when you were sixteen, who’d promised you the world.
