best part of mdzs is meeting lan zhan for the first time and he's strange and cool and doesn't talk much and i initially chalked his weird ethereal vibes up to being something innate to the lan clan and the juniors just weren't there yet, and then you meet his brother and he's just a completely normal guy

Plus it’s just a fun word to say, Mangelwurzel.

[E]very [interspecies] meeting in fact reminds us that the being we meet is and always shall be strange to us […]. When beings meet there is a distance between, such that in encountering the slug we also encounter something beyond the slug – a multitude of life we cannot sense. [...] So despite shared histories and the close proximity in which slugs and [humans] live, the slug retains a certain darkness as a creature apart; something is held in reserve […]. And so fleeting awareness of the irretrievability of the lives of others intensifies poignancy, such that despite a gulf separating the [human] from other creatures, some connection, however fleeting, is made to something – however strange. Refusing to dismiss the everyday and the banal is an ethical response. […] Slugs are there: sliming, chomping, and oozing around quietly and that should be enough to give them consideration.
[Text by: Franklin Ginn. “Sticky lives: Slugs, detachment and more-than-human ethics in the garden.” Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers, Volume 39, Issue 4. 2013. Bold emphasis added by me.]
---
So, can an insect speak? And if yes, do we understand it? Wittgenstein maintained that ‘if a lion could speak we would not understand him’, by which he implied that we do not share the ‘form of lion-life’ that would make lion language fully transparent to us […]. A similar insight was [...] expressed by [...] [a twentieth-century] honeybee researcher [...]: Beyond the appreciable facts of their life we know but little of the bees. And the closer our acquaintance becomes, the nearer is our ignorance brought to us of the depths of their real existence. But such ignorance is better than the other kind, which is unconscious and satisfied.
[Text by: Eileen Crist. “Can an Insect Speak?: The Case of the Honeybee Dance Language.” Social Studies of Science, Volume 34, Issue 1. 2004. Bold emphasis added.]
---
Animal studies scholarship tends to emphasize animal-human relations, encounters, and similarities. […] Jellyfish and other gelatinous creatures [...], however, float at the far reaches of our ability to construct sturdy interspecies connections [...]. Uexkull’s theory […] insists upon multiple worlds […], a capacious admission that a multitude of other creatures dwell as part of worlds that humans cannot readily or completely access or grasp. Three-quarters of a century later Terry Tempest Williams wonders what it would be like to be a jellyfish. […] [She] writes: “Perhaps this is what moves me most about jellies – their sensory intelligence […] the great hunger that is sent outward through the feathery reach of their tentacles. Imagine the information sought and returned.”
[Text by: Stacy Alaimo. “Jellyfish Science, Jellyfish Aesthetics: Posthuman Reconfigurations of the Sensible”. In: Thinking with Water. 2013. Bold emphasis added.]
---
Although we cannot ‘speak’ with nonhumans in any straightforward way, what we can and more importantly do do is become articulate with them in various ways. [...] If there is a way out of this historical impasse [alienation, climate crisis, global ecological degradation], [for some] it is not to be found in attributing some of ‘our’ qualities to ‘them’. It “would not be a matter of ‘giving speech back’ to animals […]. Perhaps the task is not to seek to compare the dance language of bees […] with human language, the ‘intelligence’ […] of Monarch butterflies with human intelligence, […] but rather (or at least in addition) to find a way of thinking about these ‘remarkable things’ that grants them positive ontological difference in their own right. […] [It] is concerned with what is always a multitude of others rather than a singular other […]; and it is radically nonanthropocentric […].
[Text by: Nick Bingham. “Bees, Butterflies, and Bacteria: Biotechnology and the Politics of Nonhuman Friendship.” Environment and Planning A: Economy and Space, Volume 38, Issue 3. 2006. Bold emphasis added.]
---
Starfish may seem to be still, but longer attention [...] shows them [slowly] moving, changing. [...] Then there are beings [like some insects] that experience hundreds, thousands of generations within a human lifetime. For such beings, the memories, learnings and modes of passing on experience are, it almost goes without saying (yet it must be said as it is so often not), radically different from any human’s in terms of the ways they experience change. The immensity of the alterity is, literally, incomprehensible to humans. We can't know what these beings know. But we can be aware that they have knowledges and experiences beyond us. [...] [W]e should know they live and experience and think beyond us. We should seek respect and be aware of how our lives are entangled […]. It is not abstract, or empty.

The Alû [Babylonian, Mesopotamian mythology]
In ancient Babylon, belief in possessing demons or spirits was not uncommon, and these entities were often used to explain symptoms or diseases. Often, specific demons were blamed for pains and illnesses of specific body parts: the ‘Utukku’ demon was associated with the human neck, the ‘Gallu’ usually attacked hands, and the evil invisible ‘Alû’ demon was more associated with the chest.
When an Alû possessed someone, the victim would often become very warm (I assume this refers to a fever) and fall unconscious while their eyes remain open, as if fixating on something. This creature was associated with sleep (usually attacking sleeping victims), and their victims would lose the ability to speak during possession. Furthermore, being possessed by one of these beings would make people hear a ringing noise and lose strength in their limbs. The next morning, when the victim awoke, they felt weak and drained of energy.
If you have ever experienced sleep paralysis, these symptoms might sound familiar. Indeed, it is thought that the story of the Alû arose as a way to explain sleep paralysis. Because of this ‘draining’ property, I have found that these creatures are sometimes associated with vampires today.
While these are the specific symptoms for the Alû demon, the term was also used as a general word for possessing demons and was sometimes used interchangeably with ‘Utukku’.

and speaking of sexual/suggestive content in YA, lord of the white hell by ginn hale is technically YA, and it contains sex, and i think it at least handles it better by allowing that awkwardness and vulnerability to breathe. by focusing on the fact that its characters are on the cusp of adulthood and are still figuring things out. that their feelings for each other are very adolescent, but have the potential to mature with time and age.
you cant write teenagers behaving with both the maturity and fervor of fully developed adults and expect it to be convincing or poignant. what are we even doing here. these kids should be in school. making mistakes. having hormonal meltdowns. not having the deepest most incredible romance of their lives

some highlights from this interview:
"To speak with Iero about his relationship to the music on Past Lives and the impact of the record, he puts it rather simply, “I have a very hard time saying no to things that sound fun.” "
“Within this band, the five individuals are very open,” he explains.
“It’s fucking scary just how accepting of challenges and supportive everyone is of everyone else doing what they do, and how they do it. Going back and revising. Serving the sound is always paramount, and it’s so rare.”
“We’ve all been around the block quite a few times and I think that we’ve all learned that shit doesn’t mean anything if the song’s not good.”
The shows have been an opportunity for Iero to reconnect with Australian fans, and the response has been unsurprisingly, mega. However at the same time, Iero continues to write; his focus is definitely buzzed and energetic when it comes to the sophomore L.S. Dunes project, already underway.
“I’ve been in bands before, where you write together and then you get out on the road and you’re like, “Oh fuck, I never wanna play with these people again,” and that’s fine too!” Iero laughs.
“Not every relationship is going to end in marriage. These dudes though, I like them a lot! We’re gonna stay married for a little while, we’re going steady.”
“I can tab out what Greg Ginn plays in Black Flag. I can tab out the things that Thurston Moore plays in Sonic Youth,” Iero continues. “[But] him playing those parts is different to me playing those parts. It’s going to feel totally different. It’s about the soul behind it.”

SGU Week Day 2 (still????): Favorite Character (another one????)
I already stayed up all night writing a damn novel about why I'm obsessed with a character that only showed up in 4 episodes, but while Amanda is definitely Best Girl, I'd be remiss in leaving out Best Boy.
Tumblr media
Master Sergeant Ronald Greer~
I really wasn't sure what to think of Greer at first. He seemed like kind of a wild card, eager to shoot first and ask questions later, but also super wholesome and selfless, always putting others first. Towards the end of the series, he had secured his place in my heart as Best Boy (sorry Eli).
Here are some of my favorite memes I've made starring Greer.
Tumblr media
This is the second SGU meme I ever made, a Rick and Morty mashup. I thought Greer and Krombopulos Michael were similar, in that they're both surprisingly wholesome despite their chosen professions.
Tumblr media
Given Greer's expert marksmanship and his eagerness to show it off, I was reminded of this scene from My Cousin Vinny, featuring Vanessa delivering the deer monologue.
Tumblr media
I was 100% on board with Dale x Lisa until Ronald Greer entered the chat. They are so precious together. It's so rare that I like canon ships because they always feel so forced, but SGU is so good that I can't think of a canon ship I actually dislike. The characters are so fleshed out, even the obvious "designated love interests," that they feel like people who came together naturally instead of being forced together by writers who want pretty people to suck face for ratings.
Anyway!!! Apparently Lisa said her favorite food was chicken parmesan, but in The Hunt, she declares herself a vegetarian. She's not a biologist, so I guess we can give her a pass.
Tumblr media
Speaking of meat... Anyway, I'd love to know how the conversation that led Rush to assert that there's no beef jerky in space started.
Tumblr media
This is an excerpt from a longer comic, but I think it can stand alone. Most of my content takes place after the show's end, but this one takes place between Hope and Seizure (or idk, maybe post-stasis after Waifu_01.exe and Waifu_02.exe are jailbroken [jailbreaked???], and Greer somehow missed all of that drama before because he had actual work to do), as himbo Greer grapples with the logistics of how one might date a ghost.
Tumblr media
Speaking of ghosts, I loved how Greer was Eli's wingman. It was so sweet, and I loved seeing their friendship.
Also my thought is that, due to its numerous cutaways, Eli shows Ginn Family Guy to teach her about earth culture. It's actually not a terrible idea, except that it's definitely a terrible idea.
Tumblr media
I'm gonna post the context for this on my Day 3 post. For now, POV you are Lisa Park and your himbo boyfriend is really excited about nonsense 💖💚

Las Mordidas – Ex-Voto LP (L.G.)
Tumblr media
Never-thought-I’d-see-it-in-this-lifetime release of an album-length Las Mordidas record. Back in ’93-’94 when 7” singles were largely all I could afford, much less sneak back into my teenage bedroom, these guys put out a really great one, and little else (a split I didn’t find, comp tracks I couldn’t scope and a demo cassette well out of my reach). The 10 songs on Ex-Voto get most of it but not all of it, apparently the best of the tapes that could be baked, but that’s fine. It’s good to leave some mystery now and then. Las Mordidas was the connective in between Circus Lupus and The Monorchid for all-timer frontman Chris Thomson, joined here by John Kirtschen (Chris Bald’s little bro, also of Rain) on guitar, Beefeater/All-Scar Dug E. Bird on bass, and late-era Fugazi aux drummer Jerry Busher, and they really beat on those bookends, so much more “pro” than either it’s almost a shame things didn’t move beyond the semester or two they were active. Chris T is always a god-level vocalist, one of the best to ever do it, no arguments heard or even considered, so let’s keep going. I saw The Monorchid twice when Jerry was drumming and it was an entirely together, locomoting experience, playing about twice as fast as they could with Tom (who, understandably, was dealing with a drum kit that was always falling apart mid-set), and we get the benefit of that here, along with the versatility and inherent funkiness of the Birdzell bass. Jon K. is a lone guitarist who plays like he’s backing behind an evil twin hiding behind a full stack, rippin’ out these rhythmic crossover-style leads with a thick distorted sound that cuts like Vernon Reid meets Greg Ginn – he is the real secret weapon here, a very under-utilized guitarist following this group. One of the initial releases off this new reissue imprint, headed up by Monorchid/Skull Kontrol bassist Andy Coronado, with thick vinyl, tip-on sleeves and no digital counterparts to speak of from the looks of things. Other titles out include a reissue of the Fury EP (Chris fronting Swiz, a complete legend), the Milk Music demo (once shat on in these pages or ones like them by Dais co-capt. Ryan Martin), and some songs from Tarot Bolero pre/post party Decapitated Lovers. If you want these you have to engage in retail or mailorder, and good for you because you’re definitely gonna want this one. Let’s Go. (Doug Mosurock)

So what did you think of the G-Witch trailer? I already have an HG Gundam Aerial and Figure-Rise Suletta pre-ordered. Also RG Burning/God Gundam, but that's unrelated.
It looks so pretty!! and the music creates such a cool vibe. the animation style is very pleasing to look at, and the mechs so far look like they'll make for some great fight scenes. That one part where the Aerial is holding out it's hands.... very Unicorn reminiscent lol. I'm very excited to see more of it. I also like the few glimpses of characters we have so far- that shot where the two girls are causally waving at a suit and it turns to look at them... I love the atmosphere
Tumblr media
The suit is a monoeye too.... It looks like it might be some sort of training suit, just from the blocky-ness and how basic it looks.
I really do like the artstyle for this one- the shapes all look so nice plus the hair movement has been great. Plus I love characters with distinct eyebrow shapes and this series seems to be rife with them. And the colors!!!! the colors have been so pretty!!!
Tumblr media
the red and blue lighting!! and her expression!! Suletta is so cool!
the short fight scenes shown definitely give Unicorn vibes- which is nothing but a plus in my book.
one thing that struck me was how in the beginning, Suletta isn't the one piloting the Ariel. She's watching it reach out to her. Does she get inspired by seeing it Setsuna style? she has what looks like luggage and some sort of mobile device floating around her, so it could be a rescue of some sort- but she also has her helmet off so it might not be anything that dire. Speaking of helmets, we get to see the smallest bit of normal suit in that shot! I'm a sucker for the chunky normal suits so hopefully the final product is something I'll enjoy.
I'm jumping around a bit, so bear with me- but during one of the fights shown we see this guy:
Tumblr media
Now that's a familiar design! A heaping spoonful of Zaku, a bit of Ginn with those shoulder shields, and honestly a bit of Kastrysha with that body type and head shape.
Tumblr media
LOOK AT HIMMMMM!!!!!! He's so pretty! that beauty mark isn't playing fair... I can tell I'm either going to love him or hate him. But right now I love his energy and general vibe. He's got a big old pink beetle mech and I love him for it.
Tumblr media
And how could I forget her! Miorine!!! Honestly I do think she will be more of a rival character and not the char clone- she just seems to be too close to the mc, if that makes sense? Like not in a friend way more like in a proximity way lol. If I remember correctly, on the website she does not have a mech associated with her, which is interesting. Is she there only for the education part of the school? She's the daughter of the chairman so she has some major association with it. My own theory right now is that she pilots the Ariel first and ends up having to share it or even give it up to Suletta, causing a divide between them. Ariel is a very nice mech so it would make sense that the chairman's daughter would be the one to use it. Can't wait to see what's up with her.
And lucky!!! I hope to get my hands on the Ariel hg some day. The god gundam is pretty sick, just in general. I can't speak for the rg but i do have the mg, which is pretty sweet

alastor hazbinhotel was really fun to watch progress as a character because at first i thought 'okay hes a spooky weirdo lets see what hes got going on' and then come episode 2 im thinking 'oh i see hes something way bigger and scarier and the funny deer is just a meat puppet that he puts on to be slightly less unnerving' and then by the finale i realized,
ohhh. he's a person.
yes obviously by the show's premise i knew he was human once, but the fact that his humanity is shown to be largely in tact despite being an eldritch horror masquerading as a deer was a genuine shock to me. he's not a vague incomprehensible threat like i thought, he's a guy crafting the worlds most dangerous jenga tower out of his own mistakes putting a smokescreen over all that so people can't see how little control he actually has and that's super interesting
the fact that he wants to be in control and be the ultimate puppetmaster or whatever and the fact that he pretty obviously cares about charlie (at least a little bit. probably not as much as youd think but still way more than he'd like) are at war with each other. my guess for where his character will go is that he's going to try way harder to shove down and eradicate any bit of goodness he's developed because he absolutely cannot get his ass kicked again
also he's ace and i just think that's neat

“On February 22, 1876, Thaté Iyóhiwiŋ, a Yankton Dakota woman living on the Yankton Indiana Reservation in South Dakota, and her European American mate, Felker Simmons, brought their daughter, Zitkála-Šá, into the world. Simmons would abandon mother and child, yet Zitkála-Šá describes the first 8 years of her life on the reservation as happy and safe. All that changed in 1884 when missionaries came to “save” the children.
Even though White's Indiana Manual Labor Institute was a Quaker project, it still forced the children who attended to adapt to the Quaker way of doing things, including taking new names. Zitkála-Šá was renamed Gertrude Simmons. In her biographies, Zitkála-Šá describes deep conflict between her native identity and the dominant white culture, the sorrow of being separated from her mother, and her joy in learning to read, write, and play the violin.
Zitkála-Šá returned to the reservation in 1887, but after 3 years she decided she wanted to further her education and returned to the Institute again. She taught music while attending school from 1891 to 1895, when she earned her first diploma. Her speech at graduation tackled the issue of women’s inequality and was praised in local newspapers. She had a gift of public speaking and music, and put both to good use during her life.
In 1895 Zitkála-Šá earned a scholarship to attend Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. While in college she gave public speeches and even translated Native American legends into Latin and English for children. In 1887, mere weeks from graduation, her health took a turn for the worse; her scholarship did not cover all expenses, so she had to drop out.
After college Zitkála-Šá used her musical talents to make a living. From 1897-1899, she played violin with the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. She then took a job teaching music at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, where she also hosted debates on the issue of Native American treatment. The school used her to recruit students and impress the world, but her speaking out against their rigid indoctrination of native children into white culture resulted in her dismissal in 1901.
Concerned about her mother’s health, Zitkála-Šá returned to the reservation. While there she began to collect the stories of her people and translate them into English. She found a publisher in Ginn and Company, and they put out her collection of these stories as Old Indian Legends in 1901. Like most authors, she took another job at the Bureau of Indian Affairs as her principal support. It was at this job in 1902 that she met and married Captain Raymond Bonnin, a mixed-race Nakota man.
The couple moved to work on the Uintah-Ouray Reservation in Utah for the next 14 years. They had one son, named Ohiya. Zitkála-Šá met and began to collaborate with William F. Hanson, a composer at Brigham Young University. Together they created The Sun Dance, the first opera co-written by a Native American. The opera used the backdrop of the Ute Sun Dance to explore Ute and Yankton Dakota cultures. It premiered in 1913 and was originally performed by Ute actors and singers. Choosing such a topic for the opera would have been a way to strike back at forced enculturation, because the ritual itself had been outlawed by the Federal Government in 1883 and remained so until 1933. Much later, in 1938, The Sun Dance came to The Broadway Theatre in New York City.
From 1902-1916, Zitkála-Šá published several articles about her life and native legends for English readers. Her works appeared in Atlantic Monthly and Harper’s Monthly, magazines with primarily a white readership. Her essays also appeared in American Indian Magazine. While these pieces were often autobiographical, they were still political and social commentary that showed her increased frustration with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, which fired the couple in 1916.
In 1916, the couple moved to Washington D.C., where Zitkála-Šá served as the secretary of the Society of the American Indian. In 1926, she founded the National Council of American Indians, an organization that worked to improve the treatment and lives of Native Americans. By 1928, she was an advisor to the Meriam Commission, which would lead to several improvements in how the Federal Government treated native peoples.
Zitkála-Šá continued writing, and her books and essays became more political in such works as American Indian Stories (1921) and “Oklahoma’s Poor Rich Indians,” published in 1923 by the Indian Rights Association. She spoke out for Indian’s rights and women’s rights up until her death in 1938 at the age of 61"
