Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Camouflage is a valuable skill in the animal kingdom, and what better way to do it than to make yourself see-through? Glass frogs accomplish this by storing most of their blood in their livers while they sleep, rendering them almost completely transparent! When awake, they appear mostly green, except for their undersides which remain partially translucent.

Muppet Fact #1037
The Hyalinobatrachium dianae, a Costa Rican species of glass frog discovered in 2015 bears a striking resemblance to Kermit the Frog. Brian Kubicki, the man who discovered the frog said this in relation to the media's comparisons to the real frog and the Muppet:
"Prior to the media making the link between Hyalinobatrachium dianae and Kermit the Frog I had no thought about the resemblance, but I can see where they came up with this idea that has created such a sensation with this newly described species. I am glad that this species has ended up getting so much international attention, and in doing so it is highlighting the amazing amphibians that are native to Costa Rica and the need to continue exploring and studying the country's amazing tropical forests.
The frog was named after Brian Kubicki's mother Janet Diana Kubicki, and the Roman goddess Diana.

Here have a froggy!

Adorable. /g
Have a fun fact so you know I mean it:
Glass frogs are transparent because they hide their red blood cells in their liver.
To protect themselves from predators while resting on leaves, these tiny frogs make their skin nearly transparent by packing their red blood cells into their livers.
Since nearly 90% of their blood cells are collected in one place, the rest of the body appears virtually invisible.
@veeswims you might enjoy this fact too.

Frogs are so cute! Have you seen glass frogs? They're almost completely clear! Except their blood. When they want to hide they pull their blood into, iirc, their livers. They end up looking kinda like gummies. Highly recommend you look them up to see the cuties yourself

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but when glass frogs sleep, they conceal most of their red blood cells in their livers so they’re not given away by red blood flowing through their veins

Glass frogs Hyalinobatrachium fleischmanni have transparent bellies to allow sunlight to pass through them, which camouflages them to skyward looking predators like birds and snakes. However, their blood and network of blood vessels are highly visible and a dead giveaway. To work around this, these frogs hide by pumping all their blood into their liver, which is coated with light reflecting crystals. During this time, the rest of the frog's body enters a typically fatal oxygen deprived state, yet the little frog somehow survives.

for when your gender is related to faden quartz, glass frogs, and, perhaps, glass frogs... made of faden quartz?
(this is the best idea i could come up with for colorless, sorry)

An op ed piece written by Barry regarding the glass frog pet trade.
Glass frogs are in high demand by the exotic pet trade; they are see-through mini frogs, some with weird eyes, deemed fashionable because they remind folks of Kermit. [...] The International Union for Conservation of Nature considers more than half of known glass frog species to be threatened with extinction. Habitat destruction and effects of climate change take a toll. Since the 1950s, chytrid fungus, a pathogen that kills amphibians globally, is blamed for the near or total extinction of over 200 amphibian species. It can’t be eradicated and was known to destroy an entire population of one glass frog species that had been common in Peru’s Manú National Park and surrounding area in the Cusco region, where it has not been found since 2005.

Glass Frogs
(you can see their organs, so I'm putting the rest under the cut)
Tumblr media
AKA the Centrolenidae family
Wowzers!! You can see their organs!!
Glass frogs are a family of over 60 species, with varying levels of see-through-ness to their skin!! In some, you can even see their heart beating!!
They hail from Central or South America, and mostly live in trees. Apparently being transparent makes them a bit harder to make out on the leaves, like a funky new sort of camouflage!
