Yet Another Comparison Of  ‘90-’99 And ‘14-’23 Anime Girls
Used in-episode screenshots and semi-neutral expressions to keep some semblance of consistency for accurate comparisons, and only used tv anime so no golden boys or makoto shinkais
Feel free to comment on this post or add to it- I know I had a lot more children's anime in the 90s than in the 10ishs but there were also a lot less shows back then
List of series and thoughts under the cut
90-99
knights of ramune \ nadia
goldfish warning\ future gpx
dog of flanders\yyh
akazukin chacha\slam dunk
tenchi universe/ eva
escaflone/ those who hunt elves
kero kero chime/utena
akihabara/ devilman lady
tenshi ni narumon/gto
14-23
yuki yuna/garo
rakudai kini no cavalry/ nisekoi
kuma miko/ maisou gakuen
urara meirochou/tsugumomo
a place further than our universe/ happy sugar life
endro/carole and tuesday
bna/ interspecies reviewers
drugstore in another world/blue period
lyrocois recoil/birdy wing
revolution magical world yuri/ ice guy and cool colleague
I tried to keep it younger characters/older characters for the 90s and that was not an option for the recent anime series because
There are way too many damn anime nowadays.
I tried to just get a general assortment of different character designers for both but feel free to tell me what a bad job I did for the modern stuff. Pretty sure I don’t have any dupes for the 90s ladies
personally the issue with modern anime is less ‘uwu moe moe kyun isekai harem bullshit’ and more ‘heres a single cour cheaply made no ending adaptaion of a manga or light novel why don’t you go check those out’ big budget ads of which there are too many
i’d like to run the numbers to see if the percentage of original anime has gone down or if the original works are just being flooded out by the sea of overworked nothings that are being constantly rushed out the door
yes obviously not all original works are good (or finish well rip wep) and there are good adaptations but when people think anime once they're past shounen jump series 1-500 the biggest names are original works and sure you might end up with an fma or ouran but your bebops your evas your utenas are originals. or media mixes which are weird collabs we could get into but let’s not today
i won’t disagree that there’s too many anime nowadays targeting lolicons (yeah yeah any anime for them is too much but we’re talking about comparing eras not judging content here) but I /think/ 80s and 90s relegated that type of stuff to OVAs generally. Don’t have the data to back that up but between ovas nowadays being only just for porn and the lemony history of ovas since the 80s.... there were just More ovas back when as well
doing a loose count on mal of all ovas from 90-99  1050 to about 750 total for 14-23. given the tv ratio for 95-19 being  around 1:6
yes yes these numbers are fast and loose and theres chinese animation in there and we can get finicky about What Is Anime but this was a conversation about what era of anime stylization is better
it’s the late 90s btw
but that’s a personal preference of course because art is subjective blah blah blah 90s character driven comedy fantasy/scifi ova are peak
PER SON A LLY
did I have more thoughts?
probably
i started this over two hours ago make less anime
Tumblr media
Make less anime and put more effort into what you do make
less anime. more episodes. more pay. more breaks. take longer. more original stuff
stop remaking shittttttt. you already wasted time and money and effort on a mid anime adaptation of a manga. don’t do it againnnnnn
anyway watch kero kero chime
appended thoughts the next morning less on art style and more on volume
as of mid 2023 for completed series we are at halfway of all anime having been made after ~2011 this adds up to a reddit post I found with some very nice data https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/lvvexe/chart_of_number_of_anime_per_year_over_time/  40 was a nice number of series a year about 10 a season starting and older ones continuing. 200+ is.
yes numbers are iffy with second seasons listed as different series like sailor moon r s supers stars and mha 2 3 4 5 6 ect so for accurate numbers a human touch would be needed there is semi-finite air time to work with- obviously some companies could make new tv and satellite stations just to house their garbage but i think there is a cap somewhere in sight if anyone did crunch the numbers more accurately, total episode count is necessary. one 80s robot show of 60-80 epis is equal to 4-6 modern single cour isekais
make less anime

I am kind of a starter with regards to Japanese dramas; do you think you could recommend some?
Friend! hmmmmmm I shall recommend you dramas/movies that I think most jwatchers (that I know) have seen and still enjoy/liked. The first couple of these are early 2000ish that are "old" starter pack ones they are so many gems from that time so ill list only 7.
Hana Yori Dango (all seasons +the remake) I think almost every jdrama watcher has watched AT LEAST the first season. like you gotta try it friend you just gottaaaa. Everytime i hear Planetarium or flavor of life my eyes tear still up and I start belting the lyrics.
Long Vacation a 90's age gap goodie.
Hana kimi (+the remake) I didnt watch the remake but I find the original is the best iteration of all the countries. Again I'm sure 98% of jdrama watchers have seen this. Bonus Pretty boi galore and antics.
Sky of love/Koizora (movie/drama) You are gonna feel for the youngins and then cry.
Nana (movie) music and female friendship.
GTO (all versions) the original 90's is a classic teacher one thats still good and it's better than the remake to me.
Gokusen (all seasons) everyone and their grandchildren probably watched this. It's another classic teacher one. It feels old? nostalgic and cheesy life lessony but still fun. I'd give it try for the female lead cause I still love her spunk to this day. Bonus all the guys in it were hotties at the time so pretty boi galore lol.
Juhan Shuttai! serotonin boost work related drama female lead.
Boku no Ita Jikan your gonna be sad and cry but its a gem.
Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu more recent and a romcom contract marriage goodie.
99.9: Keiji Senmon Bengoshi I don't know if you like law dramas but this is one and its fun.
Ouroboros Crime drama + Bromance
Kimi ni todoke (movie) your romance one. i love lovee this movie. I have seen it literalllyyy so many times I could quote this movie lol.
Koi wa Tsuzuku yo Doko Made romcom everyone I know watched this and loved it. I didn't particularly enjoy it tho but i have questionable taste so lolol
Tonbi (2013 movie) heartwarming family drama.
Mother (2010 drama) not for everyone kinda drama but ohhh your gonna cry cause it cutssss you.
Okitegami Kyoko no Biboroku a light private detective one with romance and i think its just niceeee.
I tend to watch shows for a particular feeling. So if there is a particular actor you want to see more of... or a specific feeling you like, I can rec something similar to that. Be warned friend.. i don't tend to watch masterpieces or award winning stuff so that kind list would be very small... im not that deep lolol. And most of these have romances sorry lolol so if you don't want that i can rec something else.
p.s. If you hate all of these than I'm sorry 😂😂😂😂😂

Mogami Kyoko - portrayed by Hashimoto Kanna - I tried to find an actress who was as close to Kyoko’s age as possible but also has a rather versatile look to her and has a charismatic aura. Plus, have you seen her in Animal Unit?! She is just so darn adorable and earnest! Total Kyoko vibes!
Tsuruga Ren - portrayed by Mackenyu Arata - In a perfect world, my Ren would be played by the legendary Hiroshi Tamaki but seeing as he is well passed the age bracket to play Ren/Kuon, I was happy to cast Arata-kun in his place as he is a rising star in his own right and would be perfect for the role. (My second choice would have been Yamashita Tomohisa but despite enjoying his roles in both Nobuta wo Produce and Kurosagi, I still feel as though he lacks the range to bring depth to Ren’s character. Thus… Arata-kun! :D) Plus, he’s just so pretty. *_*
Fuwa Sho - portrayed by Yokohama Ryusei - Also, in said perfect world, Sho would be played by too-cool-for-you, bad-boy Akanishi Jin. Alas, he too is a bit too old to portray the young, up and coming rock star so I decided on Ryusei Yokohama, pink hair and all! I actually really dig this look on him and know that he could have a lot of fun verbal sparing with with Kanna’s Kyoko!
Kotonami Kanae - portrayed by Kawaguchi Haruna - Yes, yes, the new GTO remake was kind of a hot mess due to sub-par acting and “recycled” script but do you know who was anything but forgettable and cringe-worthy? Haruna Kawaguchi. She was twisted, devious, and had the most layered character in the bunch. I can totally see her bringing Moko-san to life with her too cool for “feelings” but also knows how to tell it like it is!
Yashiro Yukihito - portrayed by Kaname Jun - I loved Jun from waaaaay back when he played a lovelorn heir to a restaurant empire looking for the perfect Hayashi Rice in “Ryusei no Kizuna”. His character was just so darn endearing and on top of that he can totally nail the comedy timing that is needed to bring, arguably, my favorite character from Skip Beat to life.
Takarada Lori - portrayed by Kubozuka Yosuke - Finding the perfect Lori was SO HARD! Because it’s a balancing act with his character. He had to be an actor who’s a bit older but still retains that youthfulness with his eccentricities. Kubozuka-san certainly has the acting chops to bring an air of coolness and sophistication to Lori’s character which was what was lacking in my initial choices for the role. My only worry is that he might be a smidgen too young for Arata-kun’s Ren to convincingly look to him as a father figure.
Kuu Hizuri - portrayed by Kaneshiro Takeshi - If I thought finding someone for Lori was hard, I was totally on the fence for the perfect Kuu right up until I made that graphic. He is suppose to be this legendary, international superstar - “the actor that Japan could be proud of”. Like Ken Watanabe level of notoriety and infamy. So yeah, a bit tricky to cast. In the end, I decided on Kaneshiro-san since he is an international star in both the Asian cinema scene and the American movie scene. Plus, his face structure is vaguely similar to Arata-kun’s. xD
Reino - portrayed by Miyavi - Hmm, besides the obvious reason, I think that Miyavi can rise to the occasion and deliver a subdued but eccentric Reino for Kyoko to really hate. xD
There are so many other characters from this behemoth of a series (Maria-chan, Amamiya-san, Kijima, Ogata-san, and the fascinating/misunderstood, Saena Mogami - Kyoko’s mother) but there just wasn’t enough time. So I hope that I might make a mini-part 2 and be able to add a few more characters.

What are your top 5-10 old tv shows you'd love to see get a reboot/reunion?
Hm.  This is a difficult question, since I have never seen a television program before.  I’ll just throw darts at a board labeled with every show made that’s older than 10 years and see what comes out:
Neon Genesis REIvangelion: I love you Shinji but this time it’s all about Rei and her triumphs.  It’ll be a cinematic masterpiece of a work
That ‘70s Show: But with a completely different cast and characters, no laugh track, shot as a single-camera dramedy instead of a multi-camera sitcom, greater introspection on the troubles of adolescence that both resonates with current teens while giving an accurate picture of the time period, and is basically the Freaks and Geeks revamp I ACTUALLY want but without me having to specifically ask “Freaks and Geeks reboot” because I don’t want James Franco to come knocking at my door with pitch ideas
Revolutionary Girl Utena: Flip the script from above; shot-for-shot remake, hell, it could just be the original footage remastered, just packaged like it was debuting as a wholly new program.  It could just be the original VHS-stretchmark footage.  I just feel that Utena could really capture the modern zeitgeist all rules of basic marketing be damned
The Lost Boys: Did NOT have a TV show like I suspected so it.  It needs to be replaced on this list
Eyeshield 21: One of my favorite manga ever, and everything I heard about/seen from the anime is…bad.  The comic had the same artist as OPM, so it can be much more fluid a show than it was; the only issue is I don’t think there’s even remotely a market for sports anime like this, with modern stuff being softer and reserved, whereas ES21 had an expertly-timed screwball manic energy to it
She-ra and th wait, they’re already doing this?  Great
GTO: …No jokes here, I just felt the anime/manga dropped the ball and we could do better
Anyway, my point is I kind of despise reboots and find them a symptom of our country’s apocalypse fetishism and inability to see new art as anything but derivative, thank you for coming to my TED talk

Ulasan J-Drama: GTO 1998 & 2012 (Remake)
Manga-nya bahkan punya prekuel, spin-off, dan sekuel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gambar Atas: GTO 1998, Gambar Bawah: GTO 2012 (Remake)
Lo nggak tahu perjuangan mati-matian gue buat mendaftar!”
Kita lihat perbedaan lainnya.
Maklum, 25 volume + 9 volume spin-off dipadatkan menjadi 11 episode.
Kisah Doujima Seiya (dari spin off)
Entah bagaimana jika drama 2012 hanya sekedar pengulangan drama 1998, pasti kalah total.

DeLorean Set to Remake the Iconic 'Back To The Future' DMC
By Dave Ashton
Rumors and whispers have been floating around for years about a possible new/remake/reimagining of the iconic DeLorean. The car was initially made famous for starring in the ‘Back to the Future’ movie trilogy. The three surviving cars from the movie, being owned by Universal Studios and the Petersen Automotive Museum.
Checking out the DeLorean Wikipedia page states that DMC Texas have had the idea since 2007 for a remake, but with legal wranglings and setbacks, it’s only now with regulation changes that a modern interpretation can be made. Quite a gap in time considering the last official versions were produced in 1982.
Interestingly, a limited run of vehicles was expected to be released in 2017, but the Wikipedia page says production is projected to start in 2021. For the life of me, I cannot find any indications of a production date on either of the DeLorean websites(more on that below…)
The new regulations allow low-volume automakers to produce up to 325 vehicles each year that resemble production cars manufactured over 25 years ago. All vehicles must adhere to the Clean Air Act standards as per the year they were produced. In essence, the low volume of vehicles are allowed if engines and emissions equipment are used from another automaker, e.g. GM, Ford. In a statement to Hagerty, Vice President of DMC Texas, James Espey, stated the company were gearing up to produce the vehicle once again, with a new version of the original design.
The New Design
As for body reworkings, engine specs., flux capacitor designs and such, the official websites don’t give anything away. The only hints to a possible design come from the video below produced at the end of 2016. From which you can see a screenshot at the top of the page. The video shows a flattened car design with gull wing doors and a healthy amount of glass fiber and brushed stainless steel.
If the rendering is anything to go off, the design looks more like a Lamborghini Countach, which themselves are horrendous to see out of the back of, along with being a tight squeeze for anybody who is over a regular size. Which means the rendering can only be taken as a possible interpretation of things to come.
youtube
At the time of writing, trawling through the DeLorean website, there is mention of how the new legislation will allow limited production runs of the vehicle, but nothing concrete about a new design – images or specifications. There are sections on the website for buying parts, servicing and restorations, but no sign of the new vehicle.
There also seems to be another DeLorean website, ‘newDeLorean.com‘ which shows a preview video of the old vehicle, with the blog section only mentioning the new regulations. Thus, it’s down to speculation at this point of how the new vehicle will turn out. If the Wikipedia production date is correct, then it may simply be early days before anything solid is released.
If a possible 325 vehicles can be produced by the company each year, they are bound to be fans of the original car and the movie franchise, who will be most interested. As for the purist muscle car fan, the John DeLorean connection is the most fascinating, being one of the originators of the classic Pontiac GTO. The original DMC had more European influences than anything else. A 2.85 L (2,849 cc) V6 engine produced by Peugeot-Renault-Volvo with 130 hp and a five-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission by the same company. With a manual transmission, performance figures came in at 0–60mph in 8.8 seconds, with the automatic transmission taking 10.5 seconds and a top speed of 109mph.
Still, performance figures don’t really count when you’re talking about such an iconic and recognizable vehicle. We just hope that this new DeLorean will be the most advanced and high-tech vehicle around. If it can run off items found in the trash, just like the end of the first movie, all the better.

The first step towards Pontiac’s 1960s success came with Semon E. “Bunkie” Knudsen’s appointment to run the division. That was on July 1, 1956. 1957’s Pontiacs were only a few weeks from production, and all he could do was to pry off the old “Silver Streak,” a Pontiac hallmark since 1935. A lovely streamline moderne detail when Frank Hershey designed them, they were old fashioned in 1956. As Knudsen said, “You can sell a young man’s car to an old man, but you can’t sell an old man’s car to a young man.” Knudsen famously recruited John Z. DeLorean and Elliot “Pete” Estes to remake the brand as a youth favorite. But a less well known recruit, Jack Humbert, oversaw style at Pontiac in the dominant era that was to come. One of Humbert’s biggest achievements was the 1965 Pontiac full-size line. - Like DeLorean and Estes, Humbert was a young man. At 34, he was the youngest person ever to be placed in charge of a GM styling studio when he was promoted to head Pontiac’s styling in the spring of 1959.  His second-in-command, Glen Wintersheidt, had come over from Cadillac. The first cars Humbert oversaw entirely were the 1963 models, with their stacked headlights. The biggest deal at Pontiac that year was the new Grand Prix. Clean and unadorned, the fancy coupe pointed at things to come. - A much more sculptured “coke bottle” look characterized all of the all-new ‘65s, which also had new perimeter frames underneath. They were all powered by ever-stronger versions of Pontiac’s V8s. The volume leader was the entry-level Catalina. The Catalina that gets the most attention in this era is the 2+2 - an option and then a model meant to imitate the GTO on a larger scale, but most Catalinas were more quietly optioned - the most popular model was the 2-door hardtop with its long, flowing roof. The regular Catalinas came with a base 289 V8, but could be optioned all the way to an earthshaking tri-power 421. - By then large performance cars were playing second fiddle to muscle cars, so the 2+2 never got much market traction, but the big flashy full-sizers were extremely popular - almost half a million were made in 1965 and the most popular style was the sleek Catalina 2-door hardtop. https://www.instagram.com/p/B7RG1tSlX8_/?igshid=lbiaelqa3xnf

nac: what do you and your followers think are the representative J-dramas of this decade? In the 2000s, we had Hana Yori Dango, Hana Kimi, Gokusen, Great Teacher Onizuka, 1 Litre of Tears, Nobuta wo Produce, Dragon Zakura, and Nodame Cantabile as the representative dramas of the decade, but which dramas do you think are representative of the current decade?
Sorry for the so very late answer.
Although not as iconic as the ones you mentioned, I think we’ve got some pretty good dramas in the last 7 years. When it comes to popular dramas after 2010, the following come to my mind:  GTO (the remake),  Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de, Ikemen desu ne, Switch girl, Karamazov no kyodai, Kazoku Game, Last Cinderella, N no tame ni, Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo N, Ouroboros, Kaitou Tantei Yamaneko (among others).
Of course, this is really based on my own preference, but I feel like some of those were generally popular with most jdrama fans.

TV- Ani ni Aisaresugite Komattemasu
Tumblr media
High school girl has been rejected 12 times since elementary school. Desperate to fall in love, she discovers her older brother has been scaring her crushes away. He claims to be protecting her, but they’re both oblivious to how far his feelings go. With the return of her childhood crush and a handsome playboy she finally starts to experience her first love (only with whom is the question). I know, it sounds like trash and I had low expectations since I didn’t like the manga, but the show does a better job at setting up the possible romance for the movie (released June 30 so you’ll have to wait). Great casting. Tao is perfectly naive and gutsy; I much prefer this over her shy, sweet high school roles. She and Ryota have cute chemistry, both as siblings and love interests. Ryota surprised me; it’s only his second drama since Season 2 of the GTO remake and though it’s not much of a step up premise/production wise, I find him natural and easily able to switch from brother to lover. Low budget and cheesiness will never stop me from enjoying a drama (ex: Mischievous Kiss: Love in Tokyo).
Spotlighting: Tao Tsuchiya, Ryota Katayose, Yudai Chiba, Ito Ono, Takuya Kusakawa, Yosuke Sugino
(NOT REALLY A) SPOILER: You find out immediately in the manga but if you’re wondering why I’m recommending a show about incest, the sister is adopted.

10 Random Facts About Me:
1. even though all my life everybody said i was “extremely intelligent and mature” i dropped out of high school a few years back, not even the final year, after having redone the first year. suddenly people saw me as the dumb class clown and i still have issues about that
hitting with the heavy stuff head first yo
2. you probably didn’t know that but i like video games a lot
3. you probably didn’t know that but i like buff women a lot
also i’m bi
4. once in elementary school i was going to school then i stopped walking all of a sudden, i don’t know why, and then a huge-ass brick came crashing down right in front of me. if i had kept walking it would’ve crushed my brain for sure because 1) i was 8 or 9 2) i tried to lift that brick but i couldn’t, too heavy
5. once in middle school me and my two friends were playing in an industrial site and I ran an iron bar through my left hand (not completely but hey) by accident, I was so afraid I’d get grounded or something that I kept the wound secret to everybody but my friends. the wound turned purple and orange in a matter of days and then it just quietly healed. that was extremely stupid of me because that shit could’ve easily gotten infected
6. in my stupid kid years i had three crushes a day, one time when i was harassing the shit out of one girl she stood up in front of the whole class and said that, well, i was a stupid kid that couldn’t stop harassing her. the embarrassment and shame i felt from that prevented me from actually looking to start a relationship with anybody else and made me believe that nobody would fall in love with me (i still have trouble with this tbh), even though she was 100% in the right and i frankly needed this
7. also every single one of my friends up until 2012 or so figuratively fucked me behind my back, as a result i have tremendous trust issues, can only have a couple friends at a time, and i have troubles speaking of what i like, what i do with my life or my feelings. also it’s absolutely not my desire to do so but i believe that every human being is evil at their core, although i know that’s stupid because hey @palmer-eldritch-on-holiday exists
8. once about a decade ago i spent 130€ or so on mobile games in a week. my mom caught me and gave me a rough time, told me never to do it again. being the little shit that i was, a year later i did it again
9. with a few exceptions, i still feel that any of the social links in Persona 3 & 4 were more “real” than any actual relationships Ive had up until the point I finished them
10. don’t worry buddy, i also happen to know the best hentai artists out there
5 OTPs
i really don’t think about that stuff much, sorry lmao

11 questions that will BLOW perception of the ending to the Last of Us, from me:
1. Keyboard and mouse or controller, which do you generally prefer for games?
controller. i grew to hate first person shooters so I really have no need to play with a M&KB in most of my games, if a game has controller support i’ll just hook my pad up
2. What is the most you have eaten in one go?
two huge pizzas and a half in front of my family. they didn’t think i could do it. they didn’t think i would continue to eat after the first pizza. they didn’t think they’d see my mouth completely red one day, the blood of my enemies dripping down from the corners of my mouth

a sequel to persona 2
a new splinter cell game, shut the fuck up blacklist was easily top 3

9. The historical figure you would chain to a table, and spank with a paddle?
Rouss-
i’m not aware of any historically buff girls so none
10. What’s a piece of media you were eh on, but improved in retrospect? If that’s unavailable, the thing you liked but seemed to get worse the more you thought about it?
metal gear solid 4
at first i thought it was a decent game but with a bit too many cutscenes, and then i wised up and saw that the real game was in first half of act 1 and first half of act 2, then you can practically never play metal gear solid again. second half of second half of act 2 has you desperately trying to sneak through a warzone overrun with constant respawning enemies and then puts you through a fucking turret section IN THE SECOND ACT, act 3 is just peekaboo and cutscenes, act 4 is mgs 1 nostalgia with nothing to do and cutscenes, act 5 is impossible to sneak through, weird fight scene, button mashing and cutscenes.
“but dust, mgs 3 also had many long cutscenes !” 1) they were easily understandable, 2) they were fun to watch
good lord they devised the best gameplay in the entire series and they did NOTHING with it i’m still pissed ten years later
11. Black jeans or blue jeans?
bleached blue jeans are cool but black jeans are my jam
