So in the latest "ban books!" controversy there's a picture book for pre-schoolers called "Grandad's Pride" the objection is that some of the illustrations of Pride involve men in leather

and I could go on and on about how yes that is in fact something you might see at Pride out in public so why would you not include it but.....

here's an unrelated image of popular children's cartoon character He-Man in a Harness (and fury underpants) if its only a problem when gay men do it, thats homophobia...

Everyone thank He-Man (1983) for establishing the rule that each team of photogenic twentysomethings with fabulous magical powers must be accompanied by one (1) middle-aged man with a beard and/or moustache and a bangin' dad bod who has no particular powers of his own, but punches way above his weight class because while everybody else is busy doing backflips and shooting sparkle rays at each other, he just hits things until they stop moving.

The cartoons I watched growing up had a lot of 'pro-social' messages, as all cartoons do. Very often they were of dubious intent ("the naysayer is always wrong" as epitomized by Eric in the D&D cartoon) or hamfisted and easily ignored (any anti-drug episode except the Bravestarr one)

Not this one though...

"The bad guys don't even treat their 'friends' well" was among the most obvious, but we didn't notice we were learning it because it makes for entertaining, bickering villains doing three stooges routines to each other and finding elaborate ways to call their subordinates idiots.

But I think of this in every "leopards ate my face" situation.

You joined the evil forces of Snake Mountain, what did you expect? A dental plan?

How weird is it to have the knowledge that Skeletor is basically He-Man's Uncle? (In some versions at least).

very weird. I take my role as an uncle very seriously. Evil uncles, nemesis uncles, give all us uncles a bad name. For this Skeletor has much to answer for.

Sucks so much that Mantenna was Hordak's go-to lovable comic relief underling in the original She-Ra but the She-Ra reboot wasn't legally allowed to use him, because he was one of several She-Characters that got licensed out only for He-Man projects.

And in the six years since Stevenson's She-Ra wrapped up, what has anyone done with the cartoon rights to Mantenna???

Ten or fifteen seconds in the most recent He-Man reboot where he has no speaking lines and is defeated by Orko. This is also the second time he's shown in a cartoon since the 80's and both times tried to make him a scary badass monster that just shrieks. HE IS SILLY DAMN IT. LET HIM BE SILLY. COWARDS. I bet Nate Stevenson's She-Ra would have let him be silly again. I bet that show would've been nice to him too. Or rather I bet Entrapta would've been nice to him, you know, while she was dating his boss or whatever that was. Like a cool new mom that lets the stepkid get away with shit.

The sound on the version of this that’s making the rounds seems to be borked. It’s also been kinda cut to ribbons… and everybody deserves to see the full work.

So here’s the whole commercial as it appeared on British/Irish TV. (And it has to be said that I still wonder what that period’s ad agency was [singly or collectively] smoking. But the ads were a huge success from the moment they appeared…)

When I was working on a development project at Filmation, my office was down the hall from Arthur Nadel’s—he being the producer of the first He-Man series. There was a lot of socializing between my office and Art’s (not to mention the office between, where Robby London and Paul Dini worked)… and from knowing Art, I strongly suspect he’d have found this completely hilarious.
