I was fortunate to be given a Hippeastrum 'Exotic Striped' (amaryllis) bulb just over six weeks ago. This tender bulb needs to be planted in a pot indoors and after flowering the leaves will develop. The plant can then be placed outside or in the greenhouse during the summer months, but shaded them from scorching sunshine and water regularly. My friend has had the same Hippeastrum plant for nearly 40 years.

This Amaryllis Dancing Queen has been with me for more than ten years crowded into a pot with another plus an offspring bulb. Until three weeks ago when I found time to repot it did it decided to bloom. I love this double varieties for its flamboyant red and white striped petals. There are a total of three buds on the stalk so it should last for more than a week.

I cannot remember where I gotten this beautiful Dancing Queen Hippeastrum. It is either from Keukenhof, Netherlands when I was there or online from Royal Colors though I can’t seem to find their online presence now.

The flowers of the species Hippeastrum papilio (butterfly amaryllis) are so sophisticated compared to many of the cultivars. The blooms have a distinctive colouring with greenish-white tepals strongly streaked and edged with dark red. This vigorous species can be evergreen and may flower twice a year, in spring and autumn.

Hippeastrum (not Amaryllis) {often sold incorrectly as amaryllis, which come from Africa} these come from South America. There are over 600 hybrids and people have been breeding these things since 1799. The striped ones I posted in October are all finished by the time these orange ones bloom in November. Either buy named bulbs or divide an existing clump and get more free plants.
