“I’ve got my fuzzy socks on and I’m ready for summer”

You arrive in New York at 10 AM. What's the first thing you do? Find a nice, cute cafe to get a coffee and pastry from and chill at for a bit while sorting out my plans for the day. You go by your locker & your bf/gf is cheating on you. What comes to mind? I’m not in school anymore, but hypothetically I’m sure I would feel a lot of emotions--angry, hurt, upset, confused... like wtf?? And damn, right in front of everyone, too? That would be humiliating.

You have to take out the trash & clean your room. Your reaction? I’m 31 years old, you gotta do that kinda stuff when you’re adult. I don’t personally take out the trash because it would be really difficult for me to do in a wheelchair, but I have other stuff I have to do. I don’t particularly enjoy it, it just is what it is.

How many siblings do you have? I have two brothers.

Have you ever made fun of a homeless/ mentally challenged person? No. What a shitty thing to.

Make up a funny word with your first name in it. I don’t know.

Do you like campfires? Yes. I love the smell, it makes me think of fall. And just the coziness of it.

What's your favorite color to write with? Black.

Do you write poetry? No.

When's your 20th birthday? [Day & Month is fine. Year if you want.] I turned 20 back in July 2009.

Do you spit in public? Ew, no. I don’t spit at all except for when rinsing my mouth after brushing my teeth. It makes me gag seeing people spit. I also have to watch out for that when wheeling around outside because I would DIE if it got on my wheels and then me. akjkslfjldsfjkldsfjkl. I’m going to throw up just thinking about it.

Are you in high school/middle school/college? I’m done with school.

How many push ups can you do? Zero.

How would you react if your cat/dog died? I’ve been through that twice before with my doggos, it’s absolutely heartbreaking and devastating. My dogs are my family. It’s no different than losing any loved one; they’re a loved one, too. I had a really hard time when my dog, Brandie, passed. It was so sudden and unexpected.

Are you trustworthy? Yes.

Do you play video games often? I’ve been playing Animal Crossing just about everyday since earlier this year. Prior to that, I’ve played a few other games in their entirety since having my Nintendo Switch that I got over a year ago.

Have you ever had fruit pizza? No.

Would you like to learn karate? No.

Do you think it would have been cool to live in the 80s? Maybe.

Do you think we'll have robots in the future? They’re already a thing, they’re just not like easily, readily available to everyone like a Rosie from The Jetsons or something.

Was the sun out today? Not yet cause it’s 5:54AM and it’s still pitch black, but it will be.

Does it get up to 100 degrees where you live? Ugh, yes. And higher. D:

When you play video games, do you like the sound on or off? I generally have it low or off.

When's the last time you saw fireworks? Fourth of July.

Will you be seeing the new Transformer movie? I never saw any of them. Not my thing.

What made this week, one to never forget? Election 2020 will be talked about forever. This year in its entirety will be, but this election was a huge one.

Do you hope you live to be the age 70 or older? I don’t want to think about dying.

Did you go to preschool? Yep.

Do you usually wear your hair up when it's hot out? Yeah. I wear my hair up all the time cause I don’t have the energy or motivation to do anything else with it.

Where were you when 9/11 happened? I was bedridden at home because I had spinal surgery a couple weeks prior.

Which would you rather play: guitar or drums? Guitar.

Have you ever gotten detention? No.

When you were little, did you used to watch Franklin? Yeah. Aww, he’s adorable.

What's the most exciting thing that's happened during your lifetime? 9/11 and this pandemic are definitely the most memorable, but I wouldn’t use the term “exciting” to describe them. A few of our blizzards, perhaps. <<< Yeah, definitely not exciting, but certainly major, life changing, go-down-in-history events.

How high can you count in a foreign language? I could go on and on in Spanish like I could English, but let’s be real I’d stop at 100 haha.

What's the best thing to do on a hot day? Stay indoors with the AC or go to the beach.

Would you like to go to Rome? Sure.

Do you use Febreeze? Sometimes. I prefer my Bath & Body Works room sprays, though.

Have you ever been to a rainforest? No.

How many days of school are left for you? I’m done with school.

How do you usually get tan? That only happens when I go to the beach. Sadly, I didn’t get to go this year.

Have you ever tried to sleep on an airplane? I tried, but couldn’t.

Ever thought about becoming a cop? No. A cop in a wheelchair... that’d be interesting.

Have you ever tried sushi? Ew, it’s disgusting.

Do you like store bought cakes or homemade ones better? I’d enjoy either one.

Do you think your a good kisser? No. Now I’m really out of practice.

Do you like long or short sleeves better? I like my sleeves to be like halfway from my elbow if that makes sense. Not a quarter sleeve, but a bit above that. Unless it’s cold, then I like long sleeves. I love when the sleeves are long enough to be able to pull down over my hands, but it’s hard to get the perfect fit when you have long arms like I do.

Do you like the name Jacob for a boy? Sure.

Could you live without electricity? Like, for how long? It would be a struggle, no denying that. I’ve never experienced going more than a few hours without it. I know people have to experience long periods without it sometimes or not have it at all, so I’m definitely fortunate.

Have you ever ate/drank something that was blue? Blue Gatorade, Pepsi Blue, the blue Mountain Dew, Kool-Aid, blue candies and cakes.

When is your last day of summer this year? I’m not in school, so no summer break anymore. However, summer is over and it has just recently started to feel like fall, so I’m quite happy about that.

Would you rather hang out with people who are loud or quiet? Quiet.

Have you ever had a pet turtle? No.

Do you want an iPad? Nah.

If you got dared to dye your hair purple, would you? No. I dye my hair red and I want to keep it that way. It would be a big, annoying process to do another color and then to go back if I wanted, so nah.

How many contacts do you have in your cell phone? Not many.

Do you own earmuffs? No. It doesn’t get cold enough for them here.

Nothing worse than being sunburnt, don’t you agree? I’ve experienced much worse, but they are awful.

| requested: yep - Hey (: Just found your blog and I've reading your fics all day long, I love the way you write. I have a request, and it is something like this: Van having like crazy intense nightmares very often for months that wake him up in the middle of the night and the only thing he wants is to be held by his gf and feel protected but also he doesn't want to feel like he's not strong/brave?. | summary: you and young van find yourself sharing beds, possibly more often than you should. And as much as you loved the time spent sleeping as close as possible, you were little worried about Van’s nightmares. | word count: 2600

‘So, I’ve sorted my bed out for you, and I’ve sorted myself out a space too. It’s in here just because there’s still a lot of drunk idiots and it means I can keep an eye of ya. Y’know make sure everything is okay.’

What a boy, what a sweet, kind boy. And he was still just a boy, just pushing eighteen made Van still a boy, although he would argue he was a man through and through.You would never call him a boy to his face, but he was, and it wasn’t a bad thing, there was something about his youthfulness and almost innocence to the harshness of the world that made your heart fill a little more every time you saw him. It was one of your favourite things about him.

As Van spoke, you looked around the room, where was he going to sleep? You soon saw a pile of blankets and cushions on the floor. He wouldn’t? Would he?No. Nope. Not happening. You couldn’t sleep in his bed and make him sleep on the floor. No way. His bed was pretty big, you could definitely fit two people in it.

He was right, although the party was dying down there was still a lot of people around. Mary and Bernie were away for the weekend so Van had invited a ‘few’ friends over. Needless to say there were still many people draped across various furniture in Van’s living room, a lot of people you didn’t know, something that made you a little uneasy, but with Van here, in bed with you, then you’d manage much easier.

‘Why don’t we just share?’ A sentence you almost started to regret as you watched Van’s face. ‘I mean, here,’ you picked up the cushions and placed them down the middle of the bed. ‘Look it’s a pillow wall, that’s okay right? I’m not okay with you sleeping on the floor Van, it’s either in the bed with me or another room.’

He wanted to be in here with you, hell, he wanted to be in the same bed of course he did. The idea of your smell lingering on his sheets made his heart swell. He wanted to say yes.

So he did, he allowed himself that closeness with you, and although it probably wouldn’t help his feelings towards you, his friend, he found himself desperate at this point, he felt he had to allow it. Or maybe he was going to burst.

‘Okay, yeah, okay. I can do that.’ Van took off his jeans leaving himself in his t-shirt and his boxers and climbed into the right side of the bed, you didn’t move however you just looked at him.

‘Erm, Van? Do you have anything I can sleep in? This dress is gonna be un-comfy. Can I have your top please?’ You asked so politely in the hopes he would slip it off and hand it to you.

‘Yeah, I’ll get you one, hold on.’ You didn’t know whether he had misheard you or didn’t want to have the awkward conversation of him telling you that wearing his clothes would be over the line. You didn’t know this though, it was just one possibility, ‘Be brave y/n.’ You thought.

‘No Van, can I have yours?’ You gestured to his top, biting your lip nervously. This could be too far, he could say no, he could be weirded out, he could tell you no that he was uncomfortable with it. But he didn’t. He smiled, removed his top and handed it to you.

‘Here.’

When you changed he covered his eyes and you soon found yourself on the left side of the bed. Neither of you were tired enough for sleep so Van opted for some TV. He didn’t have a TV in his room, instead his laptop was placed on one of the cushions in the middle, positioned so you both could see. Both of you were pushed up as much as you could against the cushions, you gravitated towards each other, although you convinced yourself it was so you could see the screen. It didn’t take much for you to drift off, but you were soon woken up again.

One thing you had yet to learn about Van was how much of a snorer he was, like really. The boy could snore. So much so, he’d managed to wake you up with it. You wanted to complain, you wanted to moody, after all he did disrupt your sleep. However, there was something cute about it that made you insides flutter as you watched his chest rise and fall. You shuffled around a bit and with your actions you woke him too. You didn’t mean too, you were just a little too loud.

‘You snore you know?’

Van sighed into his pillow and then laughed a bit. ‘I snore?’

‘Yeah, you snore.’

‘Well you steal the blankets, look at this!’ He started to grab at his duvet which was more stretched over you than him. Significantly so.

You redistributed the duvet and Van made a promise how would try his best not to snore. This time you were a little further into Van’s space, nothing too much. The pillows had been disrupted in the night letting you edge that little bit closer, you didn’t touch Van, you just lay as close as you could without touching. He didn’t have much on and you were worried it would feel as if you were overstepping the line.

He was the first to drift off, in his tiredness his arm pushed you closer, closing the gap between the two of you, you were pressed into his side. There was something about sleeping like this, with a shirtless Van that made you smile. It wasn’t his lack of clothes, it was more the intimacy. There was something that felt intimate about seeing him without a shirt, touching him without a shirt. Something that was almost indescribable, it just made you feel special. To be in this moment.

You didn’t sleep for much longer after you eventually dropped off, you were soon woken again. This time to a much different sound. Van was thrashing about; violently.

You watched for a few seconds, you were half asleep, and you couldn’t work our what he was doing for a while. It soon hit you though, he was having a nightmare.

His legs were kicking around under his covers, and his arms were pushing whatever it was in the nightmare away. He was tossing and turning and sweating a lot, his face was red and his hair was sticking to him.

‘Van?’ Van, come on, you need to wake up.’ He didn’t stop, it made you panic a little, you hated seeing him like this.

Van!’ you spoke much louder this time, rubbing his chest. This time it worked, he jolted awake, looking around the room frantically before his eyes settled on you. They relaxed then.

It was silent for a few seconds, you didn’t know what to say and Van was still coming round from his nightmare.

‘Van,’ you said it much more softly this time, and once you did the silence was broken.

‘Shit, shit, sorry. Sorry y/n.’ He started getting up quickly, stumbling into the bathroom, mumbling something about using the bathroom. The sheets were wet with sweat so you didn’t need to change them for him, but you did rearrange the pillows, completely removing the remains of the pillow wall and fixing the crumpled covers for him. Doing this gave him a few minutes alone. You didn’t want to impede on his privacy.

After another few moments. Van returned from the bathroom, looking, well to be honest; awful.

‘Sorry y/n, I didn’t mean to wake you up.’

‘Van are you okay? Was it a nightmare? We can talk about it if you want.’

He shuffled back into bed next to you but left the covers off, he was no doubt still warm.

‘It’s okay, It was just a nightmare, get them loads. Nothing you need to worry about darlin’.’

You couldn’t leave it at that, why hadn’t he told you about these nightmares before?

‘Van,’ You didn’t want to push, you just wanted to help, so you chose your words carefully. ‘Is there anything that makes them stop? Just for tonight, if there’s anything I can do tell me.’

Van hesitated, but soon spoke. ‘When I was a kid, mum would let me sleep in their bed and she’d cuddle me in and play with my hair. But you don’t have to do that darlin’ I know it’s a lot to ask.’

Of course you’d do this for him, of course you would. ‘I can do this, here,’ You lay Van down into the pillows, and cuddled into him, this time fully. You keep the duvet off of him, but covered yourself as much as you could. Your head lay on his chest and your arm reached up to play with his hair. He seemed to like it most when you scratched gently at his scalp.

He soon drifted off again, and so did you; peacefully this time.

When you woke, light was coming through Van’s curtains, just enough for you to see it was morning.

Van was sleeping, and peacefully at that. Something that you were grateful to see after the incident earlier in the night. You let him wake naturally, although it didn’t take long. And when he did, he smiled. He looked happy. You’d made him happy like that. It was an amazing feeling.

Few words were exchanged as you both first got up, mainly due to tiredness. Although there was something comfortable about the silence between you two.

‘Y/n, yer can say no and I won’t be mad, like it won’t change anything. I mean, think of what i’m about to ask you as hypothetical if it helps yer, but could this be a thing? You sleeping in bed with me, Usually I wake up loads and always feel knackered, but it’s all good today y’know?’

You had to take a moment, Van wanted last night, one of the best nights of your life, to become a more permanent arrangement. Part of you wondered if you hadn’t woken up at all, if you were still dreaming, did he really ask that?

‘Yeah, yeah I’d like that a lot.’

And you did, it became a thing, you and Van would spend alternating nights in each others beds, one night in Van’s, one in yours. It was the only way you could get your mum to agree with you being away so much. It was good though, after a few weeks things fell into place. You began to keep clothes at each other’s place, Van had even given you a key to make it easier.

Van made you promise not to tell your mum exactly why you were staying, so you didn’t you told her you liked spending time with him, which wasn’t a lie. It just wasn’t the truth, that’s all. You were worried about him though, he had told his mum and dad the real reason why you were sleeping together so much, but he would shut off whenever they tried to talk to him about it any more than that.

You had to try, although he let you be around him and help him that way, the conversation around it would forever be avoided or shut down. You were in a weird place with Van, not bad, but weird. The lines between friendship and more had been completely blurred, Van’s nicknames for you had become more and more flirty and you’d begin to let yourself feel things for Van you had previously tried to suppress. On a night, kisses would be placed on open skin, shoulders, neck, cheek, wherever he could reach. You did it too, although Van did it more.

‘We need to talk about it Van,’ you were in your room with him, it was the night to be at yours and maybe it was the familiarity of your home that gave you the courage to bring this up, but either way it was a conversation that needed to be had.

‘No we don’t, it’s getting better, don’t need to talk about summit that’s getting better.’ It was true, things were getting better with him, but the point still stood. He was downplaying the whole thing,

‘Van, talk to me. I’m worried about you, why won’t you talk to me?’ Van looked tired as you spoke, not physically tired but tired of having to keep all this to himself, to deal with this by himself. He was tired really.

‘I don’t want you to not think I’m brave, I want you to feel safe around me and not like i’m this weak person. I want you to feel like I’m here for you and I can look after you y’know?’ You looked at Van for a few seconds, you could never think that.

‘Van I always feel safe around you, always. Don’t worry about that, having nightmares doesn’t make you weak. I used to get nightmares too! This stuff happens! I promise you I feel safe around you, and I know you’re here for me Van. I appreciate everything you do for me more than you know.’ There was something about Van being honest that lifted a weight from him, it was visible on his face. He felt better already, that was all you wanted.

Things had changed in your friendship/relationship with Van, he was much more honest with you about what was happening, and since then, things were progressing much faster. Your feelings were growing for this boy by the day.

You used your key to get in to Van’s, you’d had to stop off home first, but you soon met up with Van back at his, he had created a cocoon for himself on the sofa, tucked into as many blankets as possible.

‘Hey babe look!’ When you glanced back over all you could see was the top of Van’s messy hair, he had delved further into the mess on the sofa. How cute could he be? You weren’t sure what this meant but you couldn’t hate it.

You climbed next to him on the sofa, pushing aside the blankets in order to find him underneath. He let you in to his almost-fort, before returning to the blankets to their original position, trapping you in. It was a little stuffy and it definitely wasn’t the most comfortable position but the closeness you had to Van in this moment made it worth it.

Under the blanket it stopped, under the blanket felt liminal, as if was not here nor there, as if you were nowhere. As if it was just you and Van. Nothing else. Maybe Van felt it too, it looked like he felt something. He leaned down just a little, tracing his nose along the side of yours before he kissed you. Gently, it was soft and slow, and his lips felt warm and nice. He pulled away shortly after but your faces barely separated, his eyes met yours and you laughed. Both of you. Soft giggles. It stopped after a few seconds and you just looked at each other.

‘Fuck, I wish i’d done this earlier y/n.’

‘Me too.’
