Shout out to my family for tolerating me even though I cannot watch anything with Peter Krause without saying "Did you realize he has been the lead on a TV show basically continuously since 1998? Three of them long-lasting and very popular or critically acclaimed? Come look at his Wikipedia with me!"

Hello lovely humans!
I’ve recently hit the 500 follower milestone and want to celebrate with another challenge! This time, dark fics are welcome!
I have a lot of prompts here and what doesn’t get used will probably be put aside for a future challenge. I like to make sure there is a wide array of prompts to be chosen from and tend to go overboard. Whoops.
The Rules:
1. Use the hashtag #JBBNN500
2. Dark fics are welcome - Just be sure to utilize trigger warnings and indicate that it is a dark fic.
3. Even if you aren’t writing a dark fic, use trigger warnings if the content warrants it. If you write something that has heavier themes, like those that delve into mental health topics, be sure to label it appropriately.
4. Selecting Prompts: Just let me know which one you want to do! 2 people per prompt! Tell me which subheading and the number of the prompt so I can mark it down! If it’s a lyric prompt, please give me the song and the number!
5. You don’t have to be following to participate!
6. Deadline: January 11, 2021
Yes, I’m giving about 3 months for this. January 11 also happens to be my birthday, so I figured that would be a good date to choose.
The subheadings are: dialogue prompts, sentence prompts, quotes from popular media, and song lyrics!
Find the prompts under the cut!
Dialogue Prompts
“Life is made up of maybes and regrets. I don’t want this to be one of them.”
“You can’t do this. It’s my choice to make, and mine alone. If you don’t agree with it, the door is there. Feel free to use it.”
“I used to be afraid of the dark, you know. Until I learned that the real monsters thrive in the light.”
“So, what you’re saying is if I gave you a nickel, you’d do it.”
“No, I don’t know how the cheese got there, and honestly, I don’t think I want to know.”
“You’re sounding more like a cult leader every time you open your mouth. Don’t think I’ll be accepting any Flavor Aid from you anytime soon.”
“How did you...you know what, I’m going to forget I saw a thing, and go read a book. Or bathe in Holy Water. Or both. Both is good.”
“If you say one more word I swear--” “One more word” “I hate you”
“You can’t come in here singing my favorite song and expect forgiveness, that’s not how this works!”
“No. You mean nothing to me. You never did. You never will.”
“But if it did, it would work and you can’t convince me otherwise.”
“You are simultaneously the smartest and least intelligent person I have ever meant. Truly, an amazing accomplishment.” @bonkywobble
“Next thing you’re going to say is that ghosts are real...please tell me that’s a joke”
“All I’m saying is, I could do that blindfolded.”
“But why was there pizza on the ceiling?”
“If you write me a four thousand word essay on why you think that’s a good idea, then sure.”
“I didn’t think you were serious. Do you know how illegal this is?!”
Sentence Prompts
Feel free to change the pronouns used to suit your needs, even if they aren’t bracketed! You can also change the tense if you need to!
The January rain fell, feeling like razors against [your/her/their] skin as [you/she/they] stared out over the horizon.
This was it, the moment where life as [you/she/they] knew it ended.
[His/her/their] gaze fell on [her/you], like a lion circling its prey.
You never thought that it would come to this, come to being the one to end it all.
You took a moment to calculate [his/her/their] next move, figuring out the perfect counter.
Hanging by your ankles from a tree was most definitely not how you planned on spending your Saturday.
Glancing around the room at the decor, one thing was obvious: it was [his/her/their] doing.
Hurt was the only thing you felt, the only thing you could cling to in this abyss.
Lies, it had all been lies and they were crumbling around you.
The screech of tires on the pavement sent a shiver down your spine.
He/She used to love this time of year, the beauty of it all.
It was like climbing Everest: ambitious, dangerous, and maybe a little insane.
Forgiveness was not something you were willing to offer so freely, not this time.
Chaos may as well have been the code name of this mission. @nekoannie-chan
Silence was your new best friend, one that never seemed to leave you alone.
That smile, that smile was something you could get used to waking up to every day.
Your face twisted in disgust as you realized what you had fallen into.
You were beginning to wish you had taken [him/her/them] up on that trip to Madrid.
Quotes from Popular Media:
With these prompts specifically, you can use the full thing, paraphrase, etc, since some of them are quite long, or just write something based off an idea it sparks.
“There are so many stories where some brave hero decides to give their life to save the day, and because of their sacrifice, the good guys win, the survivors all cheer, and everybody lives happily ever after. But the hero... never gets to see that ending. They'll never know if their sacrifice actually made a difference. They'll never know if the day was really saved. In the end, they just have to have faith. Ain't that a bitch.” -Epsilon, Season 13, Red vs Blue
“We're so arrogant, aren't we? So afraid of age, we do everything we can to prevent it. We don't realize what a privilege it is to grow old with someone. Someone who doesn't drive you to commit murder or doesn't humiliate you beyond repair.” - Daniel, P.S I Love You
“After centuries of men looking at my tits instead of my eyes and pinching my ass instead of shaking my hand, I now have the divine right to stare at a man's backside with vulgar, cheap appreciation if I want to!” - Denise, P.S. I Love You
“Life isn't just death. Don't ignore the living.” - Vada Sultenfuss, My Girl
“Life's full of barbaric customs. But I hope they all end with a kiss like that.” - Vada Sultenfuss, My Girl
"You're a little scary sometimes, you know that? Brilliant ... but scary." - Ron Weasley, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
"It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends." - Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
"I’ll be in my bedroom, making no noise and pretending I’m not there." - Harry Potter, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
“Sweetie, this is one of those times when I know what's right and everybody else is confused.” - Angela Montenegro, Bones, Season 3
“Oh, God. I'm in the middle of something, aren't I? Oh, look! Dead guy!” - Cam Saroyan, Bones, Season 5
“Don’t make it sound trivial when you know it isn’t. You keep talking about how we just need a little more time, but you’re not the one having to struggle.” -Nora, RWBY, Volume 7
“It's called survival. But I forgot, you two at best are functional morons.” - Crowley, Supernatural, Season 5, Episode 10
“I once had to judge a tighty-whitey contest for Lambda Kappa Pi. Trust me, I can handle anything.” - Elle Woods, Legally Blonde
“How were we supposed to know? It's not like we run background checks on all her boyfriends.” - Kathryn Kennish, Switched at Birth
“Don’t try to get on my good side. I no longer have a good one” - Ouiser, Steel Magnolias
“I would rather have thirty minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special.” - Shelby, Steel Magnolias
“You have the handwriting of a serial killer” - Clairee, Steel Magnolias
“I didn’t know if you would hire someone who might be married to someone who may or may not be a criminal” - Annelle, Steel Magnolias

Do you tell her not to fight?
Can you look her in the face and promise her that things will change?

This is really late
But I am watching Parenthood for the first time and I am really... irritated with Sarah’s love life. I watched this out of love for Lauren Graham and I completely fell in love with her character and Mark as a ship. (Not to mention he’s actually pretty hot in an adorable puppy way, so.) They were so cute and at ease with each other. She laughs and smiles and he’s just so pure and good. Age is a number. On the one hand, I know he’s young and might regret never having children, but on the other, he’s a grown man and can make that choice with certainty.  I really dislike Hank and not because he broke up my preferred ship. I would’ve disliked him regardless. Because Mark was so much younger, I had a feeling they wouldn’t be endgame. I didn’t expect the typical trope of another guy coming between them, but. This show is a drama, and it’s one of those dramas with a sense of realism. Which is to be expected, coming from the creators of Friday Night Lights. Whether one half of a relationship is younger or not, if one person wants children and the other doesn’t, that can be a pretty big deciding factor in a break-up. They went through this rough patch and I feel like it would’ve been better for them to decide they wanted different things. I kind of feel like that would’ve been better than how it actually played out. It would’ve cast Hank in a more favorable light even if he isn’t altogether as likable as Mark.  So, Sarah starts working for Hank. Who is really weird and stand-offish and I don’t at all get what she sees in him. He kisses an engaged woman without her consent. He’s that creepy boss that makes girls uncomfortable. I know that he’s one of those guys that buries his feelings because he’s been cut by love so deeply in the past and they overwhelmed him so he kissed her, but it’s still just gross and it doesn’t make him look like a good guy. I get to a small degree Sarah not telling Mark about it too, even though I wish she had earlier. It was, in her mind at the time, a genuine mistake and crossing of wires. I get her wanting to put it behind her.  Then the entire drama with his needing to travel to see his daughter comes up. I think that Sarah’s heart was in the right place. I do. She is a mother and I don’t think it would’ve been too hard for her to imagine what it must be like to be in that position. However, this is no reason why he couldn’t go alone. He didn’t want it to seem like he was going there to stop the move?? Really? Dude, grow a pair and fight for the right to see your kid. It was wrong of Sarah to once again put another guy before Mark, even if I think she did a nice thing by trying to help someone in need. (Her ex husband was very different. He was the father of her children, but Hank?) Sarah is big-hearted and often takes care of others at her own expense--and a lot of the time at the expense of the people she loves most. I do see why Mark feels Hank’s actions were manipulative. They were, even if it was unintentional. Even if it was subconscious. He didn’t need her to go. While attending a wedding might seem like a smaller deal than someone’s relationship with their child being at stake, it still wasn’t... it wasn’t Sarah’s problem, frankly. It was important to Mark. I kept watching those episodes play out and asking “girl, what are you doing?” over and over. I thought it was a fair compromise, for her to meet him there, but I really, really understood why he was so upset. I saw the breakup coming at that point from a mile away. I hate to say it, but I’ve been liking Sarah a lot less since too.  I really don’t see any evidence in the writing or acting that Sarah loves Hank more than Mark and that Hank is better for her than Mark is. While there were some bumps in the road, he overall made her way happier than Hank has thus far. The guy literally takes off and leaves the state without telling her until he’s walking out the door. By the look on her face, I hoped that was going to be the end of them right there, her realizing it was a mistake, but nope. I really had hope when Mark showed up to declare his love and told her to decide. The way she smiled when he talked, the way she looked it at him.. she looked like someone hearing an “I love you” from someone she desperately wanted it from, not from a guy she didn’t love anymore. I have watched Gilmore Girls like 6 times. When you love a show so much, you get acquainted with the actors’ acting. That was not her “I really wish I loved you Christopher, but I don’t, I love Luke face.” I have never heard her speak on it but I think it’s kind of obvious who Lauren anyway, might’ve preferred. That sweet man literally laid his heart at her feet and then gave her the space to decide what she wanted to do. I guess Hank did the same, but not before laying on a heavy dose of guilt.  “I like this, so that means of course you’re going to leave me.”  I get it. He’s depressed, he’s self deprecating, but... come on. I know that doesn’t make him a bad person, but it still... ugh, I don’t know, I just don’t like this character.  She literally says to Mark, as she says her final goodbye, “I can’t describe how much I love you, but I’m going to make it work with Hank.”  She’s going to make it work with Hank. She loves Mark, but she’s going to make it work with Hank. Why? What? When she tells Hank she loves him later, it’s... it’s hard to buy it. Lauren and Ray have 0 chemistry. I get that Jason Ritter probably wanted to leave the show, but an earlier breakup, or even a different kind of breakup, would’ve been better and more believable.  In my view, Sarah majorly settled for Hank. Which doesn’t make sense, because puppy eyes was over here fighting hard for her and she could’ve chosen him. I never got why in an earlier episode, right after they broke up, her father says that he wasn’t the right guy. Back that up with some evidence because I can’t find it.  I know they get married in the end, but the fact that he moved away and left her makes the entire thing so much worse. I know she couldn’t turn around and go get Mark after that, but a part of me wished she would. Like honestly, fuck Hank. There was nothing likable about him and nothing shippable about them. Just because he’s the “proper age” for her doesn’t make him the better man or the right man. They are just.. so awkward and they don’t fit. I get that Ray’s character is supposed to be shy and awkward and that he’s warming up and becoming less so around her, but somehow... I don’t know. It just doesn’t work for me.  Anyways, I don’t have anyone to talk about this show with so I wanted to complain somewhere.

Tell me aaaaaall about Sofya, Helena, Valerie, and Kiara. Put it under a cut if you have to!! I want all the tea!!!
Tumblr media
ahhh i love you so much jen!!! you really came through for me 💖💖 okay this is gonna get hella long so i’m gonna put my answers under the cut bc there’s just so much i gotta say!!
Tumblr media
SOFYA VOLKOVA
so here’s the tea on sofya volkova! her story is called “budapest” she’s paired up with my queen, natasha romanoff. and her story is full of sadness lol. on new years day in 1937 (aka her 9th birthday), her parents who were well respected scientists for the soviet union were killed in her home and she witnessed their death. she was later taken in by a name named viktor grankin, who encouraged her to join the red room academy under the idea that she could one day get revenge for her parents’ death. it’s during this time that she meets natalia romanova, and the two often clashed that lasted nearly a decade. but they eventually came to respect one another as assassins and eventually led to a relationship that remained hidden from their handlers.
viktor grankin was her handler during her time and he set her on missions that they believed would lead her to her parents’ killer. she would later earn the alias “sparrow” which was given to her by viktor himself. during one mission, she learned that the man behind her parents’ death was none other than viktor. she tried to take him out but failed, but she faked her death (also ending her relationship with natasha) and remained in hiding as she worked up a plan to ruin viktor and kill him.
she was inspired by the infamous line in the avengers where natasha and clint mention budapest. and since we don’t know what happens, i decided to make sofya and she’s the budapest mission lol. basically clint and natasha get word of a dangerous assassin that they’re meant to take out, and nat is SHOOK bc her old girlfriend is alive and well but also dead set on killing viktor (who basically was given something similar to natasha and sofya).
her story is so sad bc she’s lost so much and was used by viktor for 21 years. and in order to get her revenge, she had to leave the only person she’s loved since her parents??? and now she’s like a stranger in natasha’s eyes but natasha doesn’t want to lose her again?? i love angst lol!!
Tumblr media
HELENA HARTLEY
here’s the tea on my mom, helena hartley! her story is called “second chances”. so’s a revived oc of mine from yeeears ago and i think i love her a lot more now than i did before lol. but she’s the ex-girlfriend of tony stark and the mother of the beautiful lauren stark. she met tony back in 1990 at a science convention and she honestly couldn’t stand him but he always flirted with her and it was cute as heck. they clashed a lot on ideas but they also really enjoyed the bickering?? and formed an interesting friendship. but after the death of tony’s parents, helena was always there for him and something more bloomed.
tony didn’t admit his feelings until like 1992. tony was always supportive of helena’s dreams of being an engineer and even got her a job at stark industries. their relationship resulted in the birth of their daughter in 2001, but they never got married. there were also a LOT of cute dad!tony moments like he spoiled lauren to the point where her only way to sleep was on someone’s chest and listening to their heartbeat. or he loved mentioning her whenever he could during an interview bc he was so proud!!
but tony was prone to self-desctruction and it put a strain on their relationship that eventually ended in 2005. but despite their breakup, they always made sure lauren wasn’t too negatively affected and remained coordial for her sake. helena left stark industries and became an engineer at northrop grumman. but when tony needs help making the jericho missile, the first person he wants on his team is helena (but honestly it’s partially bc he misses her and is still in love with her).
their story is gonna be filled with angst (especially during the iron man movies) bc helena is trying to date other men but tony keeps finding his way back into her life, then tony goes missing and it messes up helena AND lauren (who’s like really young during this time so OW) and then when tony becomes iron man and how lauren is constantly worried about her dad.
i’ve also planned to have helena being an inhuman but it doesn’t get found out until later. and her power was going to be technology manipulation bc i didn’t want her to be a full on hero but have something a little different.
Tumblr media
VALERIE BYERS
um so i really love my time traveling bby girl!! she’s one of the three main characters of my fic, “timeless,” and the other main characters are my cyborg bby boy jai graham (who was created by the queen shuri herself) and sarah wilson, who’s the younger sister of sam wilson. so valerie is the only child of tony stark and her mother was an old girlfriend of his named susan byers. their relationship was never liked among susan’s parents and though it ended, susan found out that she was pregnant but never told tony. in fact, valerie never found out about tony being her father until she was 15.
valerie would try to find ways to meet tony, such as going to different conventions he held or was a guest at. but after the battle of new york, she realized how much she needed her father. her mom was paralyzed during the event and it wasn’t until valerie was 20 when susan finally passed. valerie then made it her business to get a job at stark industries, which she luckily did. she would work under tony, but never tell him the fact that she was his daughter.
but due to the events of infinity war, and tony is believed to have died after last being seen going into space, and the avengers fail to save the world from thanos, valerie’s life goes to shit.
since “timeless” is basically one big au and my own spin on infinity war, thanos actually takes control of earth after the big snap and the chitauri still roam earth. it’s kinda like an apocalyptic setting and humans aren’t as free to do much and the chitauri controls a lot of what happens???
but anyway, valerie meets jai and sarah when she’s out looking for scraps to build stuff and jai and sarah and they come up with the idea fo build a time machine and valerie is the perfect brain needed for the job to help create it. their plan is to go back to different points in time to assist the avengers and stop them from breaking up (bc they believe them being apart was a downfall) and try to find the infinity stones and destroy them so thanos can’t get his hands on them.
and they all lost something in the war; valerie lost her father, jai lost his creator/mother (he really never got to meet her bc she died and her last thing she did was setting him free), and sarah lost her brother who turned to ash. but one happy thing is that valerie is paired up with jai but they’re gonna be hella cute and make s.carlet.vision look like nothing compared to them lmaoo.
Tumblr media
KIARA WILLIAMS
finally, we have my pretty bird kiara! her story is “icarus” and i created her maybe a year or two ago??? she was inspired by the line where sam mentions wanting to impress the lady who worked at the va, and kiara is that lady!! she’s got a younger sister named layla and kiara is also an inhuman (the mcu has ignored them and i love them so i gotta include them lol). her father, raymond, is also an inhuman and he brought her to afterlife where she got the help after going through terrigenesis in her early teen years and gained the power of wing manifestation. when she finally returned to society, her relationship with layla was strained, but they’ve been working hard on fixing it.
she tried her best to live a normal life, getting a job as a receptionist at the va in washington dc and eventually meeting sam wilson (who she’d admire from a distance lol). but when steve rogers comes in and plays a wingman for sam, they start to become friends that eventually leads to something more.
kiara eventually becomes an avenger and gains the alias “icarus” thanks to a cute interaction she had with sam years prior. basically when it was believed that shield attacked afterlife (which kiara just so happened to be at the moment) kiara was hit in the line of fire and barely made it out with her life and it’s that day when sam finds out about her being an inhuman and her powers. he’s really sweet and helps her heal and he makes a joke saying “i guess icarus flew too close to the sun” and it’s just been her nickname ever since.

CaptainSwan One-shots FanFiction Recs p.6
Hello CS Fandom, I present to you my newest list of One-shots!  I would like to thank all those talended authors for sharing their stories with us, so that we can see our favorite couple fall in love again and again! Hope you enjoy!  😍 ❣️
The Swan Princess, @xemmaloveskillianx
The angel was clear, the little cygnet needed to be protected, he was to be her hero, and at the young age of five, Killian Jones is all too willing to take on that task. Little does he know, the cygnet is more than what she appears.
Sliding Down the Hill, @welllpthisishappening
Emma Swan's phone rings and she makes a quick, split second decision. She keeps doing that. She makes choice after choice and change after change and, suddenly, she's crying on ESPN. That's probably the last thing she expects.
Or: A not-quite a Little League World Series AU.
Marriage, Mistakes, and Maybe Fate, @sotheylived
After a drunken mistake, Killian and Emma strike a deal; if he can't convince her to stay married to him in three months time, he'll back off and they'll go back to being nothing more than friends.
Lost in the Supermarket, @allrightfine
There's a headache blooming behind her right eye, Elsa's about to leave for a summer-long vacation, and if Mary Margaret gets back and catches sight of the Teddy Grahams and Hi-C in her basket, she's going to have to endure yet another impassioned speech about healthy eating. That's three — count 'em, three — good reasons for the way she snaps at the new guy from seafood.
present all your pretty feelings, @julietohara
Emma doesn’t know Killian Jones very well. At all, really, he’s just sort of a name she hears on occasion with a vague image of a man to go along with it. A friend of a friend of a friend and all that. She’s probably spent time in the same room as him all of three times. Definitely not enough time for him to be hiding love letters inside of her European Lit textbook.
So, what she knows about Killian Jones now boils down to this; He’s kind of a creep. A sappy creep.
Prompt, @icapturedkindness
“We accidentally got married in Vegas oops”.
Killian, the Bail Bonds Assisting Barista, @jmosfreckles
This isn’t exactly fluffy but it is a coffee shop au.
Penetration Testing, @ripplestitchskein
Emma Swan is the head of security at a major corporation, and always thought she was pretty good at it, that is until Killian Jones auditions for a job and seems determined to keep her on her toes.
morning sex is for lovers, @swallowedsong
modern au. rated m. trope: waking up hungover in a strangers bed.
Come Unstuck,  only_halfway_there
Mary Margaret and David have this habit of setting Emma up on blind dates and they never go well, so Emma isn’t exactly looking forward to the latest one. However, things don’t always go as planned ...
Thinking About You, @seriouslyhooked
This chapter was prompted by a reader who wanted an AU where Emma and Killian have a fight. Emma’s instinct was that they’re over and Killian is done with her. She goes out with her friends looking for distraction, and then Killian shows up. There will be some angst (see perceived break up) but a cute little reunion to follow. Accompanying song is ‘Thinking About’ by Lauren Aquilina.
Perception, @dassala
Emma Swan's coming out ball is largely a success, but all of the suitors seem to blend together. Except for one.
Never Forget You, @katie-dub
Emma Swan needs a break - and to stop crashing into a mysterious stranger who she just can't get out of her head. Unfortunately the universe has other plans.
To Repair a Heart, @icecubelotr44
In the 1950’s Pediatric Cardiology was a fairly new field. But that didn’t stop Doctor Killian Jones from accepting that as a challenge. When Emma Swan brings her young son Henry to his office with a rare birth defect that threatens his very life, they will have to fight together in order to save his life. That’s all there is - she’s his patient’s mother and he’s her son’s doctor. Until that isn’t all there is.
The Code, @kat2609
“i use morse code to talk to my friend during class but it turns out you know morse code too and now you know that i think you have a cute butt” au
Rescue Me, @phiralovesloki
Is your date scaring the crap out of you? Are they so boring you think you might die? Did they make a casually racist comment halfway through dinner? Welcome to Hinder, the app that sets you up with an easy excuse to get the hell out of there!
Prompt, @piratesails
“I do not snore, do I?” “Like a chainsaw.”
Thank you for falling in love with me, @rouhn
Emma Swan is Killian Jones’ best friend - Killian Jones is Emma Swan’s best friend, but they both are secretly in love with each other. What happens when one of them finally confesses their feeling?
Gone, But Not Forgotten, @everlastingcaptainswan
Princess Emma needs to get out of Misthaven. Really she needs to stop being a Princess. She's always wanted to be normal, so for now she's running away. She's running away from a lot of things.
and your lucky numbers are..., @captainnagata
“And here comes the White Swan, gracing us with her presence.” (“It makes sense, etymologically speaking. Emma Blanchard. Your mother is the White Brigand.”) Emma flips him the bird, just to keep with the ornithology theme.

Because I Said So (USA, 2007)
Tumblr media
Predictions: We kind of knew that Diane Keaton was Mandy Moore’s mom, so...maybe Diane Keaton says, “Because I said so” a lot???? Does she disapprove of some guy Mandy Moore is seeing? Is she an insufferable know-it-all? Hard to say.
Plot: We were definitely not wrong. It seems like “because I said so” is Diane Keaton’s catchphrase, and she does in fact disapprove of Mandy Moore’s life choices. She’s also really crazily preoccupied with the fact that Mandy Moore can’t lock down a man, largely (it seems) because of her own deep-seated insecurities (she wasn’t able to hang on to Dad and thus as a single mom raised three daughters and is now all alone). Apparently Diane Keaton can imagine nothing worse than Mandy Moore being single. Seems a bit much, but okay.
Anyway, Diane Keaton’s solution is to write a personal ad in order to vet a date for Mandy Moore. Yup, totally fine and normal thing for a mother to do. Most of the men who answer this ad are, of course, terrible, but she also happens upon Gabriel Macht, a fedora-wearing guitarist, who seems like he’s open to dating Mandy Moore. But Diane Keaton is like, “NOPE. CAN’T HAVE YOU. YOU’RE NOT A SERIOUS PROSPECT,” and ignores him in favor of Tom Everett Scott, an architect. Unbeknownst to Diane Keaton, though, Gabriel Macht sees Mandy Moore’s business card and decides to track her down himself. Yup, yup. Also super fine and normal. But whatever; it’s not like Diane Keaton notices, since she’s so busy masterminding Mandy Moore’s romance with Tom Everett Scott.
Mandy Moore ends up meeting and dating both men. Gabriel Macht has a kid and is, like, really obsessed with fedoras and terrible vests and lives by the Venice canals because somehow he can afford that???? Tom Everett Scott is an obnoxious snob who wants four kids, but he’s all fancy and shit, so it seems Mandy Moore’s kind of into that, too. Sidebar: at some point Diane Keaton meets Gabriel Macht’s dad and is pretty into him.
Of course, this man-juggling eventually bites Mandy Moore in the ass, because for some reason she’s never had a conversation with either guy about exclusivity???? Gabriel Macht catches her leaving a date with Tom Everett Scott and is like, “I DON’T EVEN KNOW YOU ANYMORE,” and is a tiny bit slut-shame-y (auuuugh!!!! NO) -- though, it’s true, she should have told him. BUT THEN, she finds out that Tom Everett Scott was actually her mom’s plot all along and storms out. Yeah, okay. That’s understandable.
In the end, Diane Keaton apologizes and encourages Mandy Moore to go after the guy she really wants, which apparently is fedora-wearing Gabriel Macht. Diane Keaton ends up marrying Gabriel Macht’s dad (weird), and everyone lives happily (and slightly incestuously) ever after.
Best Scene: Wellllll, this movie was a little thin on good scenes...or lines...or characters or plot. Probably the best scene is when Mandy Moore breaks a plate in Gabriel Macht’s kitchen and kind of loses it, and Gabriel Macht, kindly and reasonably, is like, “It’s okay. We all have off days. Chill.” Even though Mandy Moore is your typical ridiculously klutzy romcom heroine (not just on her off days, mind you), he seems to accept her.
Worst Scene: At one point Diane Keaton has laryngitis and, incapable of taking care of herself (apparently), has a sleepover at Mandy Moore’s, where she asks her daughter what an orgasm feels like. Mandy Moore spends at least two to three minutes trying to describe it, and it’s...terrible. We have never been so uncomfortable in our own home/s.
Best Line: … *long silence; crickets*
Worst Line: “I love that when I breathe you in you smell like cake batter. And I love that you have this insane way of talking in circles that makes perfect sense.” — Gabriel Macht to Mandy Moore, at the end of the film. But honestly, this was only marginally worse than every other line. This movie was not good.
Highlights of the Watching Experience: This movie was so bad that we were able to write the plot summary while watching it. So much time saved! But really, spare yourself. Never see this.
How Many POC in the Film: Not a one that wasn’t racistly portrayed, from the Korean women working at the spa to the Indian guy who answers Diane Keaton’s ad. Yes, this happened to our eyeballs.
Alternate Scenes: Hmmmm. Well, Lauren Graham and Piper Perabo play Mandy Moore’s sisters, and they seem perfectly pleasant and normal. Lauren Graham was very charming as Lauren Graham, one of our favorite Lauren Graham roles. So, if you took out Diane Keaton and the men, and this was just a feel-good movie about three sisters -- Lauren Graham, Piper Perabo, and Mandy Moore -- we probably would have enjoyed it.
Was the Poster Better or Worse than the Film: Better. The poster very accurately represents the film and thus serves the practical purpose of warning viewers away (while the film itself serves no purpose at all). We could have seen this poster and said to ourselves, “Better not see this movie. It doesn’t look very good,” and so we would have saved ourselves. Alas, we have this blog, so, in spite of the poster’s warning... Sigh. How we suffer for our art.
Score: 3 out of 10 excessively-close-family smooches.
Ranking: 91, out of the 107 movies we’ve seen so far. This was worse than Jersey Girl. Let that sink in.

My attempt to exorcise some decade-old showrunner related demons (you’ll never guess which show, will you)
Tumblr media
(disclaimer: I don’t have sources for any of the stuff I am going to talk about. Heck, I can’t even remember what publications these interviews actually appeared in. We’re talking about stuff that goes back to 2002 or so. You’ll either have to indulge me or believe that I was making this all up).
I was initially involved in the original Gilmore Girls fandom, which meant that I followed this show while it was first going on. This was well before the age of social media, so this meant a lot of poking around on Internet forums (hello TWOP!) and scouring media interviews for clues on what was actually going on. It was a lot different then than it is now.
Unfortunately, ASP was just as difficult then as she is today.
I will tell you that from early on ASP expressed an aversion to hooking Luke and Lorelai up because she didn’t think she could get it right. Jess was brought in as an obstacle, and then Digger. The ratings dipped at the end of season 4 (Rory was boring without the love triangle, and nobody liked Digger as much as ASP did) and ASP was forced to stop stalling on the show’s core couple in order to save it.
She later said that she wouldn’t have hooked Luke and Lorelai up if David Sutcliffe hadn’t been available for Christopher to cause “problems” for them.
So let’s skip to season six, when April is brought in as an obstacle, and everything is destroyed in as disastrous and painful a manner as humanly possible while the Palladinos are in the midst of a contract dispute. There’s a popular contention out there that ASP purposely torpedoed the show either to punish the WB for not agreeing to her demands or to set up a situation where only she could fix it. I don’t know if this is worse or better than what I believe actually happened, but I don’t think that’s all there is to it.
Both ASP and Lauren Graham directly gave interviews at the end of season six where they stated that it was time for Christopher to show how good he was at a relationship.
Excuse me, I have to take a moment here.
Tumblr media
I believe there was also talk bandied around to the effect that if it didn’t work out that Christopher and Lorelai would have to remain friends like they had before and that Luke would just have to accept it if he wanted to have a relationship with her again as if nothing had happened.
Tumblr media
I don’t blame Lauren for this. At the time, I thought she was interfering in the show for stuff she wanted to happen, but she was just really good at PR. A few years after the show ended, she and Alexis were doing interviews about all the babies Luke and Lorelai probably ended up having (how could Lauren know what the eventual game plan was?) so I think she’s just really good at selling whatever she’s given at the moment. I do blame ASP. I think the main reason everything happened in season six the way it did was because she really wanted Christopher and Lorelai to happen. I think she was also slowly losing her mind over the contract negotiations and she figured she might as well bring the show down with her if she was going to be pushed out.
Of course, karma backfired on her and she never got to do the grand Christopher/Lorelai relationship she wanted. Sometimes people do get what they deserve.
Tumblr media
Even now, I still don’t trust ASP on this issue. In the post-revival interviews she always talks about the L/L nuptials as being something she had to do because the fans demanded it, but she is more than willing to go on and on about how gorgeous David Sutcliffe is. If given a chance, I don’t trust that she wouldn’t ruin everything again just because she could. I think that maybe she still partly sees Christopher as the charming bad boy who can make everything disappear if he waves enough money around, and she doesn’t understand that the majority of her audience just didn’t buy into that at all. This is why I so resent that ASP made Lorelai become the needy, insecure, irrational person she became at the end of season six, the kind of person who would obliterate everything and everyone around her because she wanted to be married so badly.
And Christopher was going to be the white knight who comes in with his bucket full of cash and gives Lorelai the fairy-tale wedding and future that suddenly was more important than anything else.
(I’m fully aware that there are some Christopher fans who still expected this to happen, even though the actor who plays him was not one of them. They occasionally come into the shipper tags and proclaim how terrible they think Luke is).
Seriously, woman. For the gazillionth time, I’m glad you got kicked off your own show.
Tumblr media
Am I overreacting here? Um, yes. I’m the one that refused to go near the show after the sixth season (in part because of ASP and Lauren’s PR blitz which made things worse as far as I was concerned) and didn’t even want to see the part where what was so badly broken had been fixed. When I learned (years later) that what ASP broke had actually been fixed by other people, I became quite convinced that this was the only reason it had been fixed. I didn’t want ASP near these characters again because I thought she had planned an entirely different ending for Lorelai and would gladly redo the Christopher/Lorelai thing again because she didn’t get to do it the way she wanted the first time.
I’m a Southern woman. We’re crazy, and we hold grudges. It’s what we do.
Besides, given what actually went down with the other Gilmore Girl during the revival, does anyone here doubt that ASP is petulant and stubborn enough to do that if she really wanted to?
Tumblr media
Of course, on this I was wrong. Very, very wrong.
There was a lot to complain about in the revival, and I’ve contributed my fair share to it. I do think the Christopher issue was handled a lot better than I ever thought ASP was capable of. It’s made clear that Lorelai and Christopher are not in contact at all. Lorelai speaks of their relationship entirely in the past tense, and directly states that that she thinks their entire relationship/marriage experiment was a mistake. While even I’m not sure things needed to be that drastic, Lorelai did need to set boundaries in order to avoid the same patterns she’d fallen into over and over. She did need to do something concrete so that Luke could fully trust her again and not fear that she’d run off to Christopher every time something went wrong.
Like Rory once said, it always ends up with Lorelai crying and alone. That relationship needed to end. Christopher appears to respect these boundaries, and knows that the best thing for Lorelai is to leave her alone and stop interfering in her life. He knows that she was in love with someone else all along, and he accepts that, and wants her to be happy.
It meant a lot that ASP explicitly wrote these things into the text, and lays it out that Lorelai is devoted to Luke, and that Christopher is not a viable alternative anymore and has not been for a very, very long time. It meant a lot that she directly states that the relationship she tore her show down for was a charade, and that Lorelai loved Luke all along. It’s definitely a positive development that all three parties accept this, and affirm that the happy ending we got is the one we were meant to have all along.
I’m not sure if it counts as an apology, but I’ll take it.
I still refuse to watch another show from the Palladinos ever again, though.

Glee Memories: 1x14 Hell-O
A long, long time ago, as Glee was approaching graduation in Season 3, I found myself nostalgic with some rare free time on my hands. So I decided to rewatch the series from the beginning and jot down some memories, discrepancies that have arisen since, fave quotes, tally solos - all that good stuff, strictly for shits and giggles.
8 years later (eek!) and once more I find myself with an unexpected abundance of free time. With so many revisiting or being newly introduced to the show between binge watching during Quarantine and all the tragedy that has surrounded the show since it went off the air, I figured I’d finish what I started. And by finish, I mean go through the end of S3. Cause I truly cannot acknowledge what happened after that. Except for 5B.
Kicking this off by reposting the first 15 episodes I already went through. Enjoy!
1x14 Hell-O Let the record show: the “So here’s what you missed on Glee” guy is now the guy we have come to know and love (Ian Brennan, right?)
“We’re glitterati. I feel like Lady Gaga.”
Add Mercedes to the list of Glee clubbers who’ve been slushied!! So it’s Rachel, Finn, Quinn, Kurt, Puck, Mr. Schue, and Mercedes. Leaving…Santana, Britany (has she EVER been slushied?), Artie, Matt and Mike. Right?
Will: Now you’re saying we have to place at Regionals or the Glee club’s gone? Me: That’s what he said in the first place!! What is going on?! Figgins; Schue, that was the deal from the beginning. Me: *satisfied* Hooray for continuity!
“Those spotlights in the auditorium don’t run on dreams.”
Sue’s back!
haha. Sue blowing on Figgins’ ear ‘romantically’
“Would’ve gotten you one, Will, but…I don’t like you.”
So…Finn sucks at basketball and is depressed.
Yeah, Puck just told Quinn he’s not break ing up with her but she needs to stop supersizing cause he doesn’t dig on fat chicks. A couple things: 1. Last episode didn’t she turn him down saying she was doing this on her own? In the words of my one true love Trouty Mouth, “that’s what I thought.” 2. Puck doesn’t dig on ‘fat chicks’? #oops Glee.
“I’m pregnant!” “And that’s MY fault?” …Puck might be as simple-minded as Finn.
So Finn and Rachel are dating now. When did that start? Who decided that? Might’ve been nice to see…
Oh yeah. Sue drugged Figgins and blackmailed him to get reinstated. Damn, I miss when this show had balls to do stuff like this and not apologize for laughing hysterically at it.
Damn, Figgins is hairy as hell.
“What do you guys say when you answer the phone?” “Waddup?” “Who dis be?” “No, she’s dead. This is her son.” HA!
Did Alexander Graham Bell really answer his phone “Ahoy ahoy!”? Can I start answering my phone like that? I CAN AND I WILL!
haha. Rachel wears training bras.
“Only this time I can just lean over and kiss you if I want to…and I want to.” Still makes my ovaries tingle. Lalalerr.
“We were seduced by the glitz and glamour of showbiz”
I’ve just pinpointed my problem (if you can call it that) with the Will/Finn relationship: I feel like we never really saw it start. It just doesn’t sit right with me. It’s always felt forced and like “look at how close and father/son they are” but…when did that start or develop into that so we could fall in love with it along the way? Answer: it didn’t. They just started saying it was already to that point rather than showing us how they got there, if that makes sense. Compare that to the Sue/Becky relationship and how we’ve watched it progress and how invested I am in that and there’s a clear difference. I wonder why they did this this way. And how much more I might care if they hadn’t. Hmm.
“Oh you mean like, meeting other girls? Cause I think I’m dating Rachel. At least she sure thinks I am.” #BlessFinnsHeart Also, why does Glee leave this unclear? :(
Mr. Schue just told Finn he wants him to sing. Finn’s response “so that’s why the band’s here” and a dopey grin. #BlessFinnsHeart
Ok. I’ve never been the biggest fan of Finn. I think he’s funny when they let him be humorous. But he’s never been my dreamboat on this show. HOWEVER…Finn in pursuit of a lady is Finn at his hottest in my opinion. I pay attention when that’s happening, lol.
Apparantly Kurt agrees. He is like a cat in heat over there. Lordy!
Aw, Brittana walk with linked pinkies. Forgot about that being their thing. I love that Quinn sees that and immediately knows they’re up to something, lol.
So…Finn thinks he’s dating Rachel…and agrees to go on a threesome date with Brittana…and when Rachel kinda catches him, he lies. Oh boy. Why did they make this unhealthy from the start if we were supposed to be rooting for this as the power couple on the show?
Rachel’s speech to Finn when he says he doesn’t wanna be her boyfriend is effing spot on.
God. I’ve been in Rachel’s position where her andFinn just ended things and he’s immediately flirting very openly with other girls right in front of her like he could give a shit. I feel your pain, girl.
Aw. Puck and Quinn are being supercute during this song.
“I’m sorry. I was just focusing on the first syllable.”
“Your rendition of Don’t Rain On My Parade was flawed. You totally lack Barbara’s emotional depth.” PREACH!
Haha. Jesse reads celebrity biographies for lifestyle tips.
I love Jonathon Groff on this show. LOVED him in Spring Awakening and was so stoked to hear he’d be on this show. I gotta say, his chemistry with Lea Michele is flawless.
Haha. Confession: I love Lionel Ritchie. And this song makes me giggle cause of the video he did for it.Heeee!
Aw. Finn was a dipshit and dumped her and now the star of Vocal Adrenaline, who is just as crazy driven as she is, asked her out. Even rewatching it I’m happy for Rachel Berry.
“There was a mouse in mine.”
I love Brittana talking about the hottest guys in school right in front of Finn like he’s not even there.
Is it just me, or is it gross that they put a lemon slice on your spaghetti at Breadstix? Yuck.
“You buy us dinner, and we make out in front of you.” Oh Brittana. :)
“Those sweaters make her look homeschooled.”
“Don’t make fun of Rachel. She’s kinda cool….” “Finn. That’s mean.”
“Did you know that dolphins are just gay sharks?”
Ugh. I still hate this Wemma scene to Hello Again. So boring.
“I dunno why but…I’ve always had a soft spot for this song” Oh ouch. Knowing now why…ouch.
Emma’s a virgin. I remember thinking “well damn. This’ll drag out forever…”
What. The hell. Is that picture Rachel has in her locker of Jesse? It looks like she drew it herself in crayon. Omg. How’d I never notice that before. Ha!
Ok, WORST way to get a girl back EVER: repeat Finn’s words to Rachel right now. “I realized I don’t wanna date other girls. Only you. You do talk too much and usually you just talk about yourself but…at least I don’t feel alone when I’m with you.” – EFF YOU, FINN! Also, remember when Mr. Schue told Rachel she’d find a boy whose favorite parts about Rachel would be the bad stuff? Yeah, so far that’s not Finn.
Atta girl, Rachel!
I’m sorry, but it’s douchey that Finn ran to Mr. Schue to tattle on Rachel dating the competition. Like…so what? My God. My students date kids in other showchoirs all the time. In real life, kids make great friendships with kids in other choirs. …but it’s Glee.
“I didn’t wear a bra and I had them turn on the air-conditioning.”
“I am engorged with venom and triumph.”
Vocal Adrenaline are inhumanly good dancers. My. God.
Yaaaaay, Idina Menzel!
“You wanna look so talented it’s literally hurting you. I want a look so optimistic it could cure Cancer.”
Will is concerned with the ‘fraternizing with the enemy’ aspect of the Rachel/Jesse relationship. Oh my God. Get over yourself or you’re in for a lot of trouble over the years,Will. How can he do this and then preach that he wants to blur the lines between Football/Cheerios and Glee Club? Double-standard hypocrite. I’m annoyed with him.
And now Will and Shelby are makin’ out. While he’s still pursuing Emma. Oh boy. You jerk. Also, as hot as Matthew Morrison is, I still watch this and think this couldn’t be fun for Idina. Cause she’s married to Taye Diggs and I imagine nothing compares to the kisses of Chocolate Lovin’ (as I call him).
“Are you gay? Cause most of the showchoir directors I make out with are gay.”
“Cut the butter, Benedict Arnold.”
Okay, I will say, as much as it annoys me, the way Tina, Artie, Kurt and Mercedes are presenting their concerns over Rachel being with Jesse makes perfect sense and kinda won me over. They’re only asking her to hold off until after Regionals so they don’t risk a repeat of what happened at Sectionals. Mercedes said they’re all happy that she’s happy but they’re worried he might be playing her. This sounds like genuine concern for her and hesitancy to trust the competition. Very different than the game Schue and Finn are playing.
“Look, we not saying that dude is playing you-“ “He’s playing you.” Kurtcedes love.
It is sad to watch them threaten to quit or kick her out if she doesn’t break up with him and she’s being vulnerable and asking how they could do that to her.
Aw. Poor Rachel. :( Jesse’s so good for her!
“Everyone is replaceable. Even you.” I love that someone (Kurt) said this to Rachel. And meant it. I hate that the show has since forgotten that nugget of truth though.
The McKinley High Old Maids Club.
Another Lauren Zizes sighting! Yay!
This Emma and Terri scene makes me so uncomfortable.
“I carry a rape whistle!”
Rachel is talking crazy and Jesse just laughed at how cute she is and how much more of a drama queen she is than him. Listen, I didn’t LOVE this pairing the first time around, but right now…perfection.
Hello was Terri and Will’s junior prom song. Ouch.
This is very smart and mature that Emma and Will are not pursuing their relationship yet because he needs to be alone for awhile. It made me sad at the time but…it’s ridiculous to think for a second that he doesn’t need a break between divorcing the woman he’s been with since he was 15 and heading into another relationship. Well done, Glee.
Rachel tells Finn to spread the word she ended things with Jesse. He tells her he wants to be with her and that he circled some dates on her ‘crazy calendar’ (eff you, Finn). Um, wtf? She just broke up with someone else that she didn’t want to break up with (well, not really but, as far as Finn is concerned) and he’s assuming she’ll want to get back together with him? Ugh. Douche Finn.
haha, Finn seems extremely confused that Rachel is rejecting HIM for a change. I actually really like this dynamic.
I hate to admit it, but…Finn is super hot in Goodbye/Hello. I’m tellin’ ya, the only dreamboat Finn in my world is a Finn in pursuit of a lady…
SOLOS: Finn (2), Rachel (3), Jesse (2)
