Hello! For the ask game, how about All Might?

My first impression: I'm glad you asked about him because that means I can tell you this. When I first saw All Might, it was through a meme. And not just a meme, it was a YGO meme! I laughed so hard when I saw it and had to know what anime he was from. So everyone thank All Might for getting me into BNHA. (The meme is below with the other pictures.)

My impression now: He has became one of my favorite anime teachers, that's for sure.

Favorite thing about that character: Hard to choose since I find Toshinori very enjoyable. His personality is a plus, but I have to say that laugh he does.

Least favorite thing: I hate that some people labels him as a "bad" teacher. No, the guy is a new one. He has his flaws and he's never actually mentored anyone. Toshinori is still learning himself. Keep in mind, his predecessor died when he was still a teenager and he was left to learn from Gran Torino. Vigilantes also showcases how overworked he is, so by the way we get to the canon story's start, of course that's the All Might we're going to get!

Favorite line/scene: I will forever be salty (not really) that the scene where Toshinori gives the kids cotton candy got cut short. His pun and everything about that scene was too funny and adorable. I also like the "OH MY GOOOOODNESS" line from season 1. From Izuku yelling to Toshinori arriving and that line is glorious!

Favorite interaction that character has with another: Well, duh, Izuku. But in general, all the kids. Also, his interactions with Naomasa are gems. Especially in Vigilantes.

A character that I wish that character would interact with more: I love that we do get him interacting with the students (even naming his mech moves after them) and I want more of that. But I would also love to have seen Toshinori and Inko interact more. Especially, during the Dark Hero Arc. Like, did they ever talk again after the whole "moving into the dorms" situation?

Another character from another fandom that reminds me of that character: Funny enough, he may look like Yugi, but he reminds me of Yugi's grandfather.

A headcanon about that character: That yellow suit will always be iconic and you cannot tell me he doesn't have an abundance of suits like that. Just like Midoriya, you know this man got to have a lot of silly attire.

A song that reminds of that character: I can't think of any! 😭

An unpopular opinion about that character: Panning back to my earlier point, I love that All Might isn't just some mentor dude who has train others before and made them great. No, he's a legend but he also has to learn some things. He still has room to grow. He's a new teacher, not a bad one.

Favorite picture: Another moment I love that one snippet we get of him and his mom. It's so wholesome, but it tickles me because Toshinori looks like a feral child. Other images I think back to is when he has this insanely long neck and that one scene when he's holding a pipe (I think). That one image alone is like "nothing is more dangerous than a teen who will do anything to beat ass and save people". Looking at you to, Izuku!

the year before they go off to college, when the hormones are at maximum hormone, quinn gets something spilled on his sweatshirt and borrows one of brady's to wear for the night and seeing quinn walk around in HIS sweatshirt that is a size too large, smelling like HIM, absolutely serves as a sexual awakening moment for brady.

he feels really really guilty about jerking off about it in the shower because quinn is his best friend and he hasn't even felt like this about anyone, really, let alone best friends who are probably supposed to be off limits (and only ever seem to date nice beta girls, which is doubly the opposite of brady) but also like. quinn in his sweatshirt. what is brady supposed to do about that

and if it's what he thinks about the next three -- or five -- times he gets off, well--

okay so it is a crush. it's a big, horrible, awful crush, but brady is going to get through this. he is not going to ruin the best friendship he has. there are plenty of fish in the sea. even if he doesn't really want to do the whole courting thing, finds the whole idea kind of weird and it's not like he’s ever found an omega he likes the smell of anyway, he can date other people. try it out. he's friendly, and he's big, and there's plenty of folks who aren't looking for a bond but are for a good time. it's fine.

and it's been years of this -- years of wanting and waiting and being so fucking scared to try -- when they're on the phone, like normal, and quinn's bitching about something, like normal, and it hits brady like a sledgehammer to the chest that like, he’s gonna keep wanting this. it isn't going away. he might as well try.

quinn takes a breath and he blurts out, quick, would you want to go out with me?

quinn keeps going. the pause wasn’t a real pause. brady tries again.

quinn stops talking. he makes a funny noise. what?

i was saying, brady says, i -- i fucking like you. actually i'm kind of in love with you, and like -- do you want to go out with me?

there's a long moment where all brady can hear is quinn breathing. then he says, are you really asking this over the phone?

brady's holding his phone so hard the plastic case is creaking. is that a no?

quinn says, i can't believe you're asking me out over the phone, but

3 and 4 (worst take you've ever seen on tumblr/what was the last strae that made you block someone) I'm combining into one cause I fortunately haven't dealt with anyone actually harassing me on here, over fandom drama specifically anyway (yet). OKAY so you all are going to hear about the cold take I saw that lives in my brain rent free that made me unfollow and block a mutual in a fit of rage and bafflement.

Picture being me, a month or two ago. I'd recently followed someone on the spot cause they'd had such a good meta about queer!Rose headcanons. They followed me back. Cool. Everything's Gucci. And then I realize how much of their blog is Dreamling. Okay, I can tag filter or unfollow if it bothers me.

And then I saw them dead ass go into the part of the comics where Ishtar is talking to Dream in Brief Lives, and she says "You really don't like women, do you?"

(Which, ouch, but given his previous behavior, not at all an unfair comment.)

And this person's takeaway was, I shitteth you not, a rambling diatribe about how maybe the reason all Dream's relationships keep failing meanwhile he's friends with Hob Gadling, is that maybe...he's not that Into Women!!

Yeah. Seriously. Definitely not the emotional problems, lack of consistent communication and ability to maintain a relationship long term for various reasons, Definitely not the pride and anger problem that got him to send Nada to hell, which literally the entire arc of Season of Mists involved him trying to fix, no, all this can be waved away with what might as well have been a longer-winded version of that corny ass 2000s era meme "Sometimes a man...hurts a woman...because his soulmate is a man!!" And before you ask - no, this person didn't appear to be joking. I seriously wanted to believe it was satire but NOPE. So now you all have to suffer the knowledge that some people (because it was being just reblogged uncritically to praise) seriously think like this. I swear I lost braincells that day.

7. What character did you begin to hate not because of canon but the way the fandom acts about them? Well...oh you know. Hobert Gadling. Easy.

Look, I was never His Biggest Fan for. Obvious reasons stated below, but he's interesting when you look at him as a direct parallel and contrast to Dream - both of these men/man-shaped beings are immortal and have done absolutely horrendous, unforgivable things to others in their long lives, between Dream's sending a woman he supposedly loved to Hell for breaking it off with him, and Hob's participation in the slave trade. And now, the question is...what do they do with this? How do you live with yourselves, having done things you can never make up for? DO you choose to go on living? Then again the critical difference between them among others - Hob has the ability to choose to maintain his immortality, or not. Dream doesn't - or doesn't feel he can safely choose to abandon the role he was born into.

But the sheer SCALE to which the fandom has constantly, utterly erased the worst of this man's atrocities, like flat out refuses to acknowledge they even exist in both show and comics (it would be one thing entirely if they cut that bit out of the show I'd understand people going feral over show Hob then, but. They did not so where's people's excuse) so they can push him and Morpheus into the mold of their ship is...honestly kind of amazing (derogatory) and has driven me to wanting to grind my teeth every time I saw the ship and eventually, him, until I recently finally wised up and filtered tags. And what also irks me - that they've taken OVER the fandom to the point where it's getting genuinely hard to impossible to go into the tags of any other characters including Rose and Lucienne especially without MOST OF IT being about them being sidelined as cheerleaders in some way for this ship. And if you tag filter and block then that just means their tags are suddenly vastly diminished or full of "this post has filtered tags" "this post has filtered tags" "this post-" ughhhhhh.

As he looks back up at Yukichi, that bright, beaming smile appearing on his face once again, a matching smile spreads across Yukichi's face as well as they hear Natsume speak again: "And now, having proclaimed your love and commitment to one another in the eyes of these loved ones, and with the power vested in me, I am finally happy to pronounce you, husband and husband. You may kiss!" And though he says it, both Yukichi and Ougai stop listening after the official pronouncement, because they are only focused on each other at that moment. As soon as the words are spoken, Yukichi wraps his arms around Ougai's waist, then leans forward, pulls him close, and kisses him, deeply, passionately, barely noticing how the taste of salt from both of their happy tears mingles with the taste of his husband's- his husband's- lips, as he is only focused on this moment between them, on how Ougai's arms wrap around his shoulders, how his hands gently curl into Yukichi's hair. And nothing else matters to Yukichi and Ougai Fukuzawa, except for each other, and the beautiful promise of the life they are building, and have built, together.

As soon as he notices the dangerous tremble in her legs, Osamu rushes forward faster, gathering Fumiko in his arms as she collapses against him, wraps her arms around his midsection, and lets out a terrible, anguished wail. "He killed him, Pa!" She says in a choked sob, curling her hands into fists against his back as Osamu, too, squeezes her tight in a hug of comfort and protection both. "He killed him, he killed Kona!" Feeling his heart shattering into thousands of sharp, painful pieces, Osamu bites down hard on his lip to keep himself from crying for the time being, curling his upper body around Fumiko as he gently presses his hand to the back of her head, holding her close to his chest, threading his fingers through her fiery red hair. Bright red yew berries - sorrow, they whisper through her tears - and dark green leaves blossom all throughout her hair, but they lack the typical spiky exterior of their naturally-occurring wild brethren; Fumiko's ability can affect how the flowers and plants themselves grow, and Osamu has no doubt that's what's happening here. Even in her despair, she doesn't want to hurt someone she loves, and someone who loves her just as much. That is far more than Osamu can say about himself, at least. "I know, baby," Osamu finally murmurs to his daughter, still holding her close and tight. "I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry." It's all he can do and say for the time being. He knows that, right now, nothing he does will be able to soothe the pain, anger, guilt, and sorrow within her, but he at least has to try. That is his job as her father, after all, and right now, she needs him to do it to the fullest more than ever before.

"Never seen you around here before," the voice of a stranger says. Since he has no impressions he needs to be making here, Ougai doesn't fight the urge to curl his lip, wrapping his fingers tightly around the glass of the drink Yukichi got for him a while ago. He doesn't drink much normally, especially not liquor or anything that's not dessert wine, but he figured it wouldn't be a problem for him to indulge just a little tonight. Hopefully, it doesn't end up working against him. "I don't make it a habit to visit places I dislike often." Hopefully the other man takes the hint from Ougai's tone and leaves him alone, but he can tell from the laughter which comes from him that it hasn't been noticed (or, if it has, it's been ignored). Noticing no visible change in the man's demeanor, Ougai adopts an even more unimpressed expression; if looks could kill, this stranger would be dead ten times over, but sadly for everyone involved, they cannot, and he remains breathing. If he wanted to, Ougai could very easily end this man's life, right here, right now, but considering he's out in a public bar far outside of Port Mafia-controlled territory, and therefore at risk of bringing unnecessary attention to himself and everyone associated with him (including his partner), that would be a foolish move, to say the least. In theory, he could also get Yukichi's attention fairly quickly if he wanted to, even without violence, but he's hesitant to do that. This was his idea, after all, and the last thing Ougai wants to do is make him feel guilty for a situation he had no control over to start with. Instead, he decides to take a more commonly used and less homicidally violent approach. His next words are tense, growled out from between his teeth: "I also don't make it a habit to speak to men in bars I'm unfamiliar with."

Definitely! It depends on what you are looking for, so here's a few of my faves in a couple different categories:

***Edit: I'm adding a cut bc it's just occurred to me to mention, anyone new who's not done the series but is seeing this - I do have a spoiler-safe fics list that Scotti and I were working on at one point, so if there's a specific season you're looking for, but not wanting to know what twists come after (or if you're looking for fic for a specific episode or event), feel free to inbox me and I'll send some links. :)

Below this cut there are descriptions that spoil all sorts of things, so.....***

For Jeller, everything by @indelibleevidence is outstanding. I'm gonna start out saying probably a majority of it has passages that are NSFW so if you're a minor or not into that, tread lightly. I'm currently revisiting Remember to Forgive, which has late-season 3 Weller suffering amnesia that takes him mentally back to early season 2; you know, when he couldn't stand to be in the same room as his wife. The angst! It's a fave and totally my jam, I could probably quote it. Torture Without You is... well. Read it. Amazing. I'm a big Remi fan, and here you will also find one of our two Reller champions: the Damaged Goods series is so dark (also very NSFW) but soooo good.

@idealisticrealism is another that everyone should definitely read, imo. The Fire is basically my favorite one-shot ever, and she's our other Reller champion - as complete AUs go I can not possibly overstate my love for From the Ashes and Into Flames. I could literally quote them both to you.

@gypsyscarfwoman is responsible for my other favorite one-shot, Nothing Can Come Between Us, which is Jeller after season 2, but from Sarah Weller's POV. It's just a tiny bit angsty but fluffy and sweet. I love the way she describes the interactions between Jeller as viewed by a concerned third party. There's also Shelter From Your Storm, which is another season 2 AU except that post compound raid there's legitimate concern Nas might throw Jane under the bus and let the CIA have her, so Weller fake marries her to legitimize and protect her.

@ladyriot recently did a lovely retelling of s2 but as a Jane/Patterson slow burn. The way they low key agonize over each other is tragic, but the ending is so sweet without being completely saccharine, and it's definitely worth a look.

I haven't read much Zapatterson but @narvaldetierra is actively writing them. I read Remembers from September and No Good Deed Goes Unpunished a while ago, and I'm excited to reread them soon and then keep working through this ship 😁

Dylan Cruca is worth checking out if you want a bit of season 2/3 Jeller canon divergence/extra scenes, or Jeller/Reller AUs - I thought their post-season 1 AU ended up being a particularly interesting twist - but they're not for everyone.

I could go on but I'll end with one that's basically the fic equivalent to a playlist of Sad Songs to Sob To: Silence Speaks by lochness20, in which Jane's black site escape attempt fails, and when they find her, she is in a REALLY bad state. Warning that it's pretty dark and brutal and tw for suicidal thoughts and an eventual very graphic murder.

🏷 Is there a tag you like to search for when looking for fanfics to read?

I don't really look for specific tags; it's not a huge fandom so there's not a ton of room to be choosy. I can say that straight whump isn't my thing, nor is pure domestic stuff, and I generally steer clear of pregnancy/kidfic unless there's some other compelling plot alongside the kids. I guess I basically love angst most of all 😍

I have been listening to this song for more than 15 years (I was born in 95). I was introduced to the song by a friend who was like a big brother. One of my all time favourite songs, never tire of listening it and always go back to listen when I'm in the mood.

I have looked high and low to figure out what they mean when they say "it's time to Galvanize" I still don't get it but love it all the same.

no.3 - Moonbound by Anzo

Easily one of the songs I've listened to the most in 2022. It's like it says, Moonbound. Listening to this song just takes me out of my body into deep thoughts and I love it. It's like there is a promised land of happiness in the neon light and synthwave. This song inspired a whole playlist dedicated to similar songs as I realized how much I love synthwave, EDM and Melodic House. Here is the link, in case if anyone likes synthwave. I know there aren't many of us out there.

no.2 - Tali by Jack Wall

I play a lot of games along with Sims and Mass Effect is easily the one I love the most out of all. If there are any Mass Effect nerds out there who reads this, they'll know when this song plays. It's when you go to help one of your mates, named Tali, who's in trouble. I died so many times when I did that mission. So, so many times when I just couldn't figure out which route to take on the battlefield. All that time this song was playing but it was the most fun I had even though I died countless times.

no.1 - Sunrise Prelude by Daft Punk

I know that this film, when it came out in 2010 (I believe) wasn't the best received films. A quick look at some reviews in Youtube will tell you that is not the case anymore. It was one of the first films which used the de-aging technology which was mind blowing to me back then. The graphics, music, story, the neon design everything about it I was in love with.

There are no words to describe how happy watching that film makes me. I watched it over and over again, late at nights, whenever I was alone for 13 years now. This goes for the music album as well. A lot of young people knows, or heard about Daft Punk thanks to their collabs but to me, songs for this film and this whole album is their masterpiece. These days, the album is my go to when I am out jogging. I re-live the film every time I'm out there and I've pavloved myself further with the endorphin of jogging mixing with the music so I become happier when I listen to it.

This song comes up when Sam and Quorra are looking into what Quorra imagines to be the sunrise. Someone who looks out into sunsets and general horizons often when brooding, the moment just speaks to me in my soul.

This is my playlist for the album in order of appearance in the film. I doubt I'll find another nerd who loves the movie as much as I do but just in case.

I doubt many people will read this long ass post but for those who did thank you! I know you don't recognise most of these and it's okay. Music is the most personal thing anyone can listen to imo. No one will ever feel the way I feel when listening to these and I won't be able to do the same for others, and that's okay. I enjoyed writing a little homage to some of my favourites.

preference of communication:  mainly tumblr IMs these days, but i have discord and wire and occasionally i will drop my info on tumblr, give it out privately if asked, or add if someone else is looking to add. it can take me a while to work up the courage to message someone in the first place and i'm really... not good at the usual social cues of "hey how are you/good how are you?/what have you been up to?" but i'm usually game to chat about other stuff

most active muse:  Caleb. i've had a lot of other muses but he's been the one i've been most consistently able to write in the slightly over 3 years since i first started writing him.

experience/how many years:  i had a couple false starts trying to set up rp blogs for Samwise Gamgee from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Wirt from Over the Garden Wall back in 2014 and 2015? but i just never really managed to get off the ground and start writing in-character for them because i was super heavily intimidated by the rpc and too nervous to approach anyone. finally in january 2017 i stumbled across a parody of Portal 2 on youtube called the Unauthorized Musical and discovered that there were already a handful of muns on tumblr who had picked up characters specifically based on that production and regularly hosted rabbit streams where they'd watch the video again together and welcomed anyone who wanted to join to do so. i noticed nobody was really writing any antagonistic characters against them so i wound up setting up a blog for GLaDOS and following everybody i met during the stream and that was essentially how i became hooked on tumblr rp. i've been kicking around on and off for about 7 years now.

best experience: there's so many to choose from, but i think i'd have to say my best experience was when i started writing Caleb. i was just fresh off watching Westworld season 3, i was actually feeling more compelled at the time to try and write either Dolores, Maeve, Clementine or Teddy but i felt like i wouldn't do any of 'em justice. i ended up making a sideblog to my old multimuse after deciding i would try writing Caleb, and that's where i almost immediately connected with melody/aworldofyou/copiesofme and was enthusiastically introduced to a bunch of other muns residing in the tiny but mighty westworld rpc. 🥰

rp pet peeves: one is pretty much the same as Sandra said; making a new main blog in the spur of the moment. exhausting all energy on curating a distinct aesthetic for icons/banners/promos/custom themes/etc, and then completely losing interest in a week or 2 without ever getting to write that character. and then more often than not the process gets repeated down the line until that person either becomes overwhelmed from having too many blogs to manage or too many memes to answer or too many starters to write.

i also don't particularly love memes that promote making rp into a popularity contest or seeking an almost constant stream of validation from other people. things like "send a _ and i'll rate your blog on a scale of 1 to 10/using a scale template" i try to stay far away from. arguably every notification you get on tumblr is an instant dopamine hit just like all social media is but. idk there was just something about those blog rating/character rating memes that made them feel more addictive to send and receive than like, taking the time to give someone your honest opinion on how you feel about them as a person or on their writing and characters and such.

another similar thing is reblog chains to the effect of 'reblog this if you actually like following me/seeing me on the dash.' i really don't like these. there's a level of self-deprecation and guilt-tripping involved and when people already feel awfully low and vulnerable to negative self image this just makes it worse. especially when people post with side commentary like 'oh nobody will reblog this from me lol.' and i don't think they're always necessarily aware that this is manipulative behavior, but...it is. even just the way the source post is typically phrased, it preys on insecurity and it makes me sad when i do see mutuals reblogging posts written like this because then i'm like. just sitting there thinking "i'm not a spambot so...if i didn't like following you or seeing you on my dash i would not be following you??"

other forms of reblog chains like 'reblog to give the person you're reblogging from a hug' or 'reblog this and say something nice about the person you reblogged from' are far better in my opinion because they don't inherently contain that same level of insecurity. they put the focus on lifting up and supporting the person you're reblogging from instead of centering on yourself.

plots or memes: i like both but i am very much a memes person because i feel like i'm not very good at plotting.

long or short replies: i don't really have a preference! but lately my thing generally seems to be letting the length creep up so my replies just get longer and longer over time. i never expect anyone to match me, but like. the one thing that would crush my soul is me posting like. 5-7 paragraphs and getting back a one sentence or one word response 😭

are you like your muses: i have a few things in common with caleb, one of them being that we're both neurodivergent and just trying to exist in a society where it is typically seen as undesirable to be classed as such. i stumbled across a venn diagram a while back comparing and contrasting common traits associated with ptsd and autism and it has given me a lot to take into consideration in the way that i portray caleb

the first character i ever fell in love with: Scarlet. As soon as I saw her, that was it, game over, everyone else step aside

a character that i used to love/like, but now do not: Saizo. I liked the idea of him and Kaze working as a parallel to Corrin and their sibs on opposite sides (at least if you do Conquest), but ultimately he fizzled for me

a ship that i used to love/like, but now do not: Kagero/Orochi. I still like them, but I guess I like the memory of liking them? The fandom never really gave me the dynamic I craved, and I wasn't put together enough to ever write anything for them myself.

my ultimate favorite character™: Mozu. I know the Donnel archetype annoys a lot of people but I love her for it. Get big and strong, my daughter. Kill god. Rebuild your village. You deserve the world.

prettiest character: a ridiculously hard question when the whole cast is pretty (at minimum in the generic way) but I'd have to say Reina. That's just a pretty lady right there.

my most hated character: there is competition for this one because the characters I hate I really hate, but I think the winner for Tokyo's Most Hated is Laslow. I hate his stupid face. Why are you even here. Go bother someone who likes your trope.

my OTP: oh god this one is also hard if only because none of the ships really make OTP status for me. If I had to pick, I'd say probably Charlotte/money just kidding mostly Sakura/Hana

Honestly? They could be fun-- non-functional, but fun. They one-hundred percent start off as a terrible one night stand. Maybe Vox is at the 666 News that day, maybe Tom is pitching a new idea. And then whoops! There's a story that neither of them is ever gonna let anyone know.

And then maybe it happens again.

One big problem is that I don't think that Vox likes the idea of dating a subordinate, which a not... insignificant number of people in the Pride Ring are exactly that. He would also never be able to not be critical about Tom's work as news anchor-- he did that job, for years. It would be a tumultuous relationship, but I can see it!

Moxxie:

I feel like these two could be hilariously stable, sort of domestic. Also a hot mess, but it's Hell. That sort of comes with the territory. The fact that Moxxie isn't a sinner would be an immediate "oh that's weird". With the sinners, there's no linger attachments in the same way, unless you know your family is down there, whereas the Hellborn have families! They have the ability to go between the rings! These are all things that Vox, despite being the advocate of everything for a price, cannot do.

And I mean, Vox wants love, he wants attention, and we saw Moxxie's willingness to be a romantic that I think could work well. As a ship, it does just sort of feel fundamentally baffling though, you know? Like I think it could be a delight to explore, and I would 100% be game, but also it confuses me. And I mean Moxxie and Milie are really sweet, I'm hard pressed to break them up!

Also while I'm at it, I'll throw in some gushing over my boys and horses if you don't mind:

Jack's not much of a horserider but he loves being around them and handles horses well enough that I've let him tag along for the slower rides we take after the horses on after they've had a long ride, to let them cool down a little.

He's doing great so far and it's a nice sight to see him on horseback.

Cas and I are still doing our regular rides and it's still a super lovely way to spend time with him.

I remember mentioning (probably when answering some ask) that Cas usually goes for the stallions 'cause he thinks the mares are too jumpy and geldings are "boring". I sually go for the geldings.

Also if Cas is judging my horse choice when I pick a gelding my favourite comeback is "You better watch out or I'll turn you into one." (Geldings are male horse that have had their 🍒 snipped off) It's all fun and games and to be taken with a grain of salt but I did love to watch the colour drain from his face the first time I said it.

even if he favours stallions he always goes for the lazier kind, he loves riding and a bit off a challenge but won't risk a serious injury on too difficult a horse.

And then there's Cowboy (incase you didn't read the recent ask, this is just good old platonic friendship)

When I tell you, this man has no sense of self-preservation whatsoever when it comes to horses (that's why I'm there to make sure he doesn't get himself killed) (he says that "getting 'almost' killed isn't a thing because if something 'almost' happened it doesn't count")

I worry over him sometimes but then again, he's an excellent horseman and at the end of the day I trust him not to take too big risks.

He's the one I usually take the horses out with to let off some steam, just letting them hallop their hearts out.

Don't tell anyone but sometimes we have do some racing for fun, galloping so fast it's all a blur, not really knowing where the horse ends and you begin. It's the best thing ✨

Magda, oh my goodness, look how much thought/effort/work/love you put into this ask I'm shaking🥺🥺🥺 I did ask for some good vibes, life's been kicking me while I'm down for the entire month, and it's not been kind to the rest of my family either. Without going in to much personal detail, I'm traveling out of town for a funeral this weekend, among all of life's other hellishness it's been throwing my way.

Spoilers for my Kiribaku (Bakugou centric) fanfic In the Roaring Autumn are below the cut. If you haven’t read it yet, click the link to the story and take a gander! These answers are in response to this fanfic ask meme I reblogged yesterday.

1. If you had to create a soundtrack for your story, what songs would you choose? Why?

This is such a great question, and I’m going to interpret it more as songs that remind me of my story and the characters than as if I were constructing a film with background music.

The Lakes - Taylor Swift

This song is one I heard well into the writing process of In the Roaring Autumn, but it was one of those situations where I felt like my brain had been hacked and the guts of my story were spilled out in this gorgeous, cottagecore-esque song. The idea of running away into nature—away from society and the eyes that are always watching a little too closely—is so true to Katsuki’s desires in the story.

Lines like “I’m not cut out for all these cynical clones/ these hunters with cell phones” and “what should be over burrowed under my skin in heart-stopping waves of hurt/ I’ve come too far to watch some name-dropping sleaze tell me what are my words worth” stand out to me in particular. They really speak to Katsuki’s struggle to let go of his own past and all the devastation and guilt he feels because of it, and also the ways in which other people in his life (primarily Midoriya in this case) have tried to tell Katsuki what he meant with his own actions and what he must do in order to redeem himself.

And of course the fact that the narrator of the song isn’t escaping alone. They’re going to the lakes to look over cliff sides and be with the only person they trust—the only person who can understand the ways which they’ve been cast out. One might even say Kirishima is the “red rose” that “grew up from ice frozen ground.” Katsuki is escaping the bounds of society, but as the song says in its final line, not without his muse—not without Kirishima.

I Was an Island - Allison Weiss

I have no idea whether anyone else in the world knows this song or not (it could be a beloved classic or a complete unknown for all I know), but in my opinion it is THE quintessential Kiribaku song, and therefore it must be included. I have a feeling that it works in most any universe that includes Kiribaku, even (and especially) canon. But, I think of it particularly in regards to the last third or so of the story where Katsuki begins to pull back out of fear, deciding it’s better to avoid Kirishima altogether than to tell the truth about his struggles. The song deals with a lot of the same things Katsuki is going through—this idea that he was a loner and he liked it that way, and then Kirishima came along and changed all of that.

I imagine that Katsuki would particularly resonate with lines like “I was a fighter and I was so brave/ but I lowered my sword when you held me and swore you’d stay stay stay” “I was a wolf dear/ apart from the pack/ but you heard my cry in the dead of the night and told me that you had my back” and “I’m no good on my own anymore/ what did I do to deserve this/ what did you do to me/ baby come back, you know I don’t wanna be free”.

Medicine - Daughter

This song is so heavy and angsty and I love it for Autumn. I imagine that it could be from either/both Katsuki and Eijirou’s perspectives and they try to help each other out of unhealthy coping mechanisms and numbness. It’s all about how they both see each other’s worth and wish to communicate that. It’s about encouraging the best in each other, encouraging accountability, but also saying “hey, if you mess up once in a while, that doesn’t change who you are and what you’re capable of”. The opening line starts it off right for me “Pick it up/ Pick it all up/ And start again./ You’ve got a second chance/ You could go home/ Escape it all, it’s just irrelevant.”

Don’t mistake my brevity for lack of love for this song. I just thing the song really speaks for itself. If somehow you haven’t heard it in the blessed year of 2021, please go listen now! It’s one of my favorites.

That’s enough songs I suppose 😅 considering I rambled so much.

4. What are your main character(s) motivations? What do you consider their main drivers?

This question actually made me pause! I think because it’s been a while since Autumn ended and I want to get it right. At the time of writing I was very connected to Katsuki as a character, so while I didn’t necessarily ever put this into words, I definitely knew his motivation. I’ll start with him and try to put myself back in his shoes for a moment.

Katsuki’s motivation more than anything else, I think, is to feel safe. There may have been a time when he wanted to be the best, but we come into his life at a point where he’s kind of thrown his hands up and said “Fuck that bullshit!” It’s something that Katsuki realizes is out of character for himself—so out of character that he no longer knows how to function. He’s living his life on the run in a way, choosing isolation as a means of protecting himself from things that he sees as threats to his well-being: consequences, human relationships, the wrestling team as a whole, and the concept of processing his trauma. We see him build wall after wall throughout the story, but we also see Kirishima peeling those walls away brick by brick. Soon enough Katsuki stops looking at Kirishima as a threat to his safety, and he begins to see him as a help to his safety. It’s a beautiful change, but through it all Katsuki’s motivation stays the same. I would say even with the lessons that Katsuki learns and the ways he grows, the moral is never that he was wrong for prioritizing his mental health and well-being. That was very important to me.

Kirishima’s motivation is a little more difficult for me to pin down (haha, wrestling puns), especially in hindsight. I think I’m looking for some sort of deep or abstract answer when in reality, the thing driving Kiri is the desire to be good. He’s made some poor choices in the past, and they were choices he knew were poor even when acting them out. It’s something that weighs heavily on him—something that has altered the way that he lives his life in a very permanent sense. Kirishima wants to do the right thing; it’s the reason he’s so willing to examine Midoriya’s actions and motives when (as Katsuki mentions) everyone else sees Midoriya’s gentle demeanor and assumes the best in him. It’s also the reason that Kirishima emphasizes Katsuki’s own goodness to him. Kirishima knows what it’s like to feel less than, or to feel that you’ve fucked up so supremely that you have no honor at all. Not only does he want to prevent Katsuki from feeling those things, he actually views Katsuki as the morally superior between the two of them and looks to Katsuki as an example of authenticity, honesty, heart, and goodness.

Thank you for sending in these lovely questions! It was so fun to recall where my brain was at the time of writing this story and in some ways examining it from a deeper perspective. I really need to dedicate more time to writing my upcoming fic because CLEARLY I have the urge to spill a lot of words into the universe right now.

“Send down a basket!” Jazz called up the makeshift shaft. He turned to Prowl. “Why are ya still standin’? Sit!”

“I would rather not,” Prowl replied. He gestured to the scattered struts. “These are the struts of my ancestors. I emerged here. My procreators were interred here, and theirs before them.”

“Ya lost’em before the war?”

“Before I ever left Praxus.”

Bluestreak clung to Prowl, and he almost mindlessly stroked the mechling’s back. There was really nothing he could think to say to Bluestreak. He had no platitudes to offer. It was not alright. It would not be okay. For the rest of his life, Bluestreak would remember the mega-cycles he had been trapped down here as his originator had slowly died, and he was going to remember those unanswered screams for help. In time maybe he would hate them, hate Prowl, for taking too long to find him. Against his neck, Bluestreak whimpered and his tears fell down Prowl’s shoulder, Prowl rumbled his engine in a low pitch, and rubbed his shoulders. Prowl did not tell him not to cry; Bluestreak had every right to his tears.

“Ya got a way wit sparklings,” Jazz observed. Prowl huffed a denial.

“I do not.”

“Hmm.”

Jazz had a familiar smirk on his lipplates. Prowl looked away. It was a knowing look. If anyone thought they knew Prowl, it was Jazz. If anyone thought they understood Prowl, it was Jazz. They had worked both alongside and against each other for vorns. Over that time they had come to some sort of an understanding. Even if Prowl often did not approve of Jazz’s methods he knew that Jazz’s intentions were good, and those methods Prowl did not approve of, perhaps mostly because he did not understand, generally produced results. He thought Jazz felt similar respect for him.

“Here it comes,” Jazz said as the basket rattled down the shaft. “Ya should probably go along wit’m in the basket, Prowl. Bet he’d feel safer for it. Right? Bluestreak?”

“Please?” Bluestreak asked. He looked up from Prowl’s shoulder. His optics shown with tears, and his lower lip quivered. “Please?”

“As you like.”

That was a dirty trick. Jazz was an effective operative, and an effective officer because he had an excellent read on mechanism. He had made an accurate analysis of Prowl in regards to the mechling, and was using it to his advantage. Prowl was not stubborn enough to resist for resistance’s sake. It would be an ugly thing to do to Bluestreak for no other reason than to preserve his pride. This was not something Prowl would do, and Jazz had known. Jazz might have thought better of Prowl than anyone else did.

“I’ll strap ya in, and follow behind to steer ya along,” Jazz said as the basket appeared. He gently stroked Bluestreak’s helm and spoke to him with a reassuring smile. “It’s gonna be a lil bumpy. Just hang on to Prowl ‘n you’ll be just fine.”

Prowl’s doorwings protested bitterly when he lay on his back in the basket. He was careful not to so much as hint to his discomfort as Bluestreak laid on top of him. The mechling curled his digits around the edge of Prowl’s chassis armour, and Prowl wrapped his arms around the mechling, below his doorwings and rumbled his engine in a low and continuous hum. Jazz smiled down at them and Prowl looked up at him with suspicion.

“‘M gonna  put a blanket o’er ya now, okay Bluestreak?” Jazz said.

“Mhm.”

“There ya go,” Jazz said, and he draped a blanket over them and tucked it in around them. “‘M gonna strap ya in now. Ya just snuggle wit Prowl. Y’re gonna be back on the surfaced before ya know it.”

The ascent was considerably slower than Prowl’s descent had been, and considerably smoother. Jazz did exactly as he had said he would do, he steered the basket from below as the long cable hooked to the top of the basket was slowly retracted. Bluestreak quivered and Prowl just held him, what else could he do? Daylight lit up the dark shaft as they slowly approached the surface and Prowl remembered just what that surface looked like. He pulled the blanket over Bluestreak’s helm. This was not something the mechling needed to see.

“A’ight, hook’em up,” Jazz ordered as he pushed the basket from below and guided it back out onto the surface.

Prowl looked up and saw Blades hovering above them. It had been his cable that had guided them back up from the crypt. Hot Spot hooked another three cables to the basket, and Prowl realized they were about to be medevaced. The sound overhead frightened Bluestreak and he cried  and shivered.

“You are safe,” Prowl hushed him. Hot Spot started.

“You... you found a survivor? Sir! Should be go down there?”

“I do not believe there is anyone else,” Prowl said. “But if a search can be done safely, do it.”

“Blades is gonna fly ya out,” Jazz said. “See ya at HQ.”

The flight was mercifully brief. Prowl did not enjoy the way the air lashed at his face but he was grateful for the blanket that was shielding Bluestreak and the bulk of his own plating from the vicious lashing. He might have covered his face with a servo but Prowl could not imagine letting go of Bluestreak even that much, so he endured. It was something he as good at. News of the mechling’s discovery had spread as gossip so often did within the army, like a wildfire. A team of medics met Blades as he lowered the basket to the ground. They quickly threw off the straps and pushed aside the blanket. Someone grabbed Bluestreak’s shoulders and he screamed.

“No! No! No!”

“You are alright, Bluestreak,” Prowl said as he sat up and gave the impetuous medic a withering glare. He cradled the sparkling against his chassis. “You are safe.”

“This isn’t a sideshow, give them space,” the medics and gawkers backed away at Ratchets command. The crowd split as Ratchet walked through. Bluestreak clung to Prowl and hid his face in the crook of his neck. Prowl rumbled his engine continuously as he rubbed the mechling’s back.

“Ratchet is a medic, Bluestreak,” he explained. “He will not hurt you. He only wants to make sure that you are healthy.”

“Don’t let them take me away,” Bluestreak begged.

“No one is taking you anywhere until you’re ready to go,” Ratchet said, and he crouched next to the basket. “Are you hurting anywhere?”

“No,” Bluestreak said. He turned his helm to look at the medic but clung tightly to Prowl’s neck.

“Do you mind if I run a couple of scans to make sure?” The medic asked.

“Do I have to leave Prowl?”

“No, mechling. You can stay right where you are.”

Ratchet ran his scans.

“You’re fit. Even your fuel levels are good.”

“Prowl gave me rust sticks,” Bluestreak said.

“Rust sticks? That would be the fuel you’d cart around,” Ratchet levelled Prowl with a stern glare, Prowl did as he always did. He pretended he did not notice. “A transport will be landing in a joor to take you to Iacon. In the meantime you can rest up in my medtent and have some real fuel.”

“You’re going to come with me, aren’t you Prowl?” Bluestreak asked.

“Yes, of course.”

“There you go. On your peds, Bluestreak,” Ratchet ordered. Tentatively, Bluestreak reached for the medic’s proffered servo and climbed out of the basket. Prowl moved to follow him, but when he tried to stand his peds screamed and his struts were like gel, he fell awkwardly back on his aft, and his doorwings absolutely throbbed.

“Ratchet?” Prowl said.

“What?” The medic asked.

"I am not sure I can walk on my own," Prowl replied. He tried again to stand but he could not push himself upright. “In fact, I do not believe I can stand.”

“Alright,” Ratchet said, his optics flashed dangerously. “What have you done to yourself this time?”
