Place Of Words - Cover Draft
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I chose this magazine to use as inspiration because i had alot of the main qualities i wanted to include within my cover. The large full-bleed image used as a background and the title large and bold along the top, i want to have mine centred and larger than this one but i do want to use this as inspiration because of the tagline. I want to be able to include a tagline on mine because the title of “RELAY” does not really fit my topic so the tagline will be used to link the two and bring it all together. The way this magazine has included a date and issue number is something i want to copy from them because i feel it will help with making my magazine look more like a streetwear style production. For mine i will include an long sideways barcode aligned along the left hand side, this is mainly used by comic books which is where i will be using for the inspiration.

Testing out front covers on InDesign: Design 1
Here is my first design for the front cover of my mini magazine. It includes a chosen image, the logo, barcode and additional illustration. When designing this front cover, I wanted it to be simplistic. Not over powering, but eye-catching enough for my market. I said previously I wanted to add illustration in my work. I found this out during my visual communication research where I discovered cottage core drawings in children's books like the tales of Beatrix Potter and the secret garden. I think adding illustration in my magazine will express the cottage core aesthetic more, Plus I love doing artwork so I want to add a personal touch within this. I have done this by adding a flower illustration throughout as you can see on the front cover. I really like this touch towards my magazine. Its modern and adds a distinctive look towards the brand.
Even better if? Although I love this front cover, I do want to experiment further and not just choose the first design I make. I want to test out imagery, compositions etc.

31+ Totally Free Resources For Living with Celiac Disease
New blog post! I LOVE finding new resources that help people living with celiac disease...and I LOVE those resources even more when they're free! Going gluten free after a celiac disease diagnosis can be expensive since you often need to re-stock your pantry with gluten free foods and have medical bills to pay.
So I thought I'd round up 31+ resources that are totally FREE and can help anyone living with celiac disease! If you've recently received a celiac diagnosis, I hope this list provides you with valuable tools to make your transition to a gluten free diet even easier. And if you've lived with celiac disease for years, I hope this list helps you discover some new gluten free resources to take advantage of!
31+ TOTALLY FREE RESOURCES TO HELP ANYONE LIVING WITH CELIAC DISEASE:
1. Eat Out using Find Me Gluten Free.
This app makes life SO much easier when you want to eat out but need to adhere to a gluten free diet. You can enter an address or use your current location and find reviews and menus of nearby restaurants with gluten free options.
2. Save Money.
Ibotta is a money-saving app that lets you submit photographs of your receipts and get a small amount of cash back on certain products. Tons of stores participate in Ibotta, ranging from Walmart to Home Depot to Safeway, so you can get money back on more than just groceries. The cash-back products also change monthly, and I often see cash-back deals on gluten free brands like Bob's Red Mill and Enjoy Life Foods. If you want to give Ibotta a try, sign up using my referral code "qiarlqs" or by clicking this link -> Save Money With Ibotta, and you can earn a $10 welcome bonus.
3. When You Need a Laugh.
If you've yet to discover Gluten Free Street Gang on Instagram, change that ASAP. This Instagram profile always makes me laugh and hits home about many aspects of a gluten free diet.
4. Find New Gluten Free Foods.
Celiac and the Beast is a renowned gluten free blogger in the industry for MANY reasons...but I especially love that she regularly shares some of the latest and greatest gluten free products to hit the market.
5. Get a BS-Free Perspective on Celiac Life.
Gluten Dude and all of his posts always say it like it is, whether he's calling out someone for harming the celiac community or offering advice to one of his many emailers.
6. Learn More About Celiac Disease and Eating Gluten Free.
MI Gluten Free Gal is another one of my favorite gluten free bloggers because not only does she share delicious recipes, but she also regularly shares graphics and posts on important topics for the celiac community, such as how to get a proper celiac disease diagnosis.
7. Cook Gluten Free Like a Pro.
There are plenty of amazing gluten free bloggers sharing equally amazing gluten free recipes, but a few of my favorite resources include:
Vegetarian Mamma
Mama Knows Gluten Free
My Gluten-Free Kitchen
8. Make New Friends
Spokin is another phone app allows you to look for gluten free (and allergy friendly) restaurants nearby, but it also gives users access to product reviews, allergy friendly travel guides and educational articles. Spokin is a social networking app to some extent, too, as you can follow other people after you’ve set up your own account
9. Find Back-To-School Tips.
Are you the parent of a child with celiac disease or do you have celiac disease and you're going to school? Then check out this extensive list of back-to-school resources from the National Celiac Association. And if you're a college student with celiac disease (or you're about to head to college), I highly recommend my thorough post about being gluten free in college!
10. Grocery Shop Like a Master.
One of the most popular gluten free apps on iTunes is The Gluten Free Scanner, which lets you scan a product’s barcode and receive a quick report on whether it’s gluten free or not.
I personally prefer scanning product labels myself because I know technology - just like people - can make mistakes. As a result, I’d encourage you to read a product’s ingredient labels yourself even if The Gluten Free Scanner says the product is gluten free. However, especially if you’re newly diagnosed and still wondering, "What is gluten anyway?", this free scanner could make shopping for gluten free products a lot quicker, easier and less stressful.
11. Stay Up-To-Date.
Beyond Celiac is another awesome celiac disease organization that provides plenty of gluten free recipes, tips on living with celiac disease and news updates.
12. Access Gluten Free Food in a Time of Need.
The Food Equality Initiative is a new organization to me, but I love their mission of making gluten free food (and food free from other allergens) more accessible to everyone. They also provide access to a gluten free food pantry to those in need.
13. Connect with Fellow Gluten Free Teens.
Generation GF is an AMAZING program that provides a variety of resources to gluten free kids and teens, including educational resources, local support groups and virtual chats that allow gluten free teens to connect even if they don't live in the same area.
The Gluten Free Intolerance Group is also who hosts the GF Teen Summit!
14. Get Safety Alerts.
The Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO) provide independent verification of gluten free products, and their symbol indicates that a product meets the strictest of gluten free standards. But I also love that they regularly release safety alerts on gluten free products.
15. Meet Up with Other Gluten Free Folks.
Search for the local gluten-free community in your area, or start a group of your own, on Meetup.com.
16. Learn about Research on a Cure for Celiac Disease.
The University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center is on a mission to find a cure for celiac disease, and you can learn more about their work here.
17. Avoid the Top 10 Allergens.
Allergy Eats is another phone app that is very similar to Find Me Gluten Free except you can search for restaurants free of any of the top 10 allergens instead of just gluten. People can leave ratings and reviews, which, at least in my experience, makes eating out gluten free or allergy friendly a lot easier (and less scary) since you don't feel like you're making as "blind" of a restaurant choice.
18. Read Honest, Helpful Advice.
The information you can find on Reddit's gluten free channel - /r/GlutenFree - isn't always accurate or appropriate for all readers. However, you can find plenty of honest, helpful advice.
19. Download Gluten Free Restaurant Cards.
Make traveling a little easier with gluten free restaurant cards you can download in different languages.
20. Find the Best Gluten Free Products.
As regular readers know, I share gluten free product reviews pretty often on my blog and social media channels. But if you're looking for the best gluten free products to buy when you're just going gluten free, this post should definitely be on your reading list!
21. Kick Back with a Magazine.
It's amazing how many gluten-free-related magazines there are available nowadays. If you're looking for some reading material, you might look into:
Allergic Living
Delight Gluten Free
GFF Magazine
Gluten-Free Living
Gluten Free & More (formerly Living Without)
Simply Gluten Free
22. Save Money on Taxes.
Did you know you can receive tax deductions for gluten free food if you have celiac disease? Learn more here!
23. My blog and all my social media channels :)
As always, I'm here to offer as much support and education as I can. I may not always respond right away, but for the quickest response, DM me on Instagram.
My Goal With Sharing These Resources on Living With Celiac Disease
Depending on where you are in your celiac journey, you may be familiar with many of the gluten free resources on this list. But I hope even one of these links helps you feel less alone with celiac disease, less frustrated with a gluten free diet or more hopeful in how enjoyable living with celiac disease can be! Are there any other resources you would add to this list? Let me know in the comments! via Blogger https://ift.tt/35e79WS

Short stories of working at Jo-Ann’s.
• I’m a crafter, and I’m not 100% familiar with all of our fabrics and sewing items. Which by proxy means I don’t know how to sew in any way except for how to make a pillowcase like I learned in 8th grade. I had a lady come in and I’m back up register so I’m available to help so I offered help when she said she had a question. She proceeded to badger me on how to make a dress. I told her I’m not familiar with how, but one of my managers (who does drag and makes BEAUTIFUL dresses) is. “I saw him earlier but I don’t know if he’s still here. You make go back to the cutting counter to see or ask.” She’s huffy I won’t follow her (I’m clearly doing an important project). She comes back to ask when he works next. I saw I don’t know, I don’t know his schedule. She turns red and leaves.
• Around the start of Black Friday sales ( the first time around, I just made it one year) I was put to train on the cut counter. I’ve done a couple simple cuts before to help out. But I was only trained for less than an hour before I was needed at the register. SM scheduled me for counter my next shift and I was immediately overwhelmed by the line, what people wanted cut, I literally didn’t know what I was doing, it was just me and one other person who was already cutting so she couldn’t teach me, no one could, and I was eventually sent to the back to take care of my first massive panic attack in years. I’m still a little traumatized and have refused to cut since.
• Our store doesn’t sell sewing machines. Instead we have an independent stored that rents floor space from us to sell sewing machines and their other various items. They close at 6, it is 6:10, they are gone, and a lady comes to the register with three of their items and one of ours. Here’s how the conversation went:
ME: Sorry ma’am, I can’t sell you these three items. They are not ours.
LADY: What do you mean? They’re in your store and I need them.
ME: They belong to the independent store in the carpeted area. Their barcodes are made clearly different, and we cannot sell them. You can come back tomorrow to get them. They unfortunately closed at 6.
LADY: You don’t understand, I need them for a project I have to finish tonight. Can I just give you money in and envelope to leave for them.
ME: Logically and morally I cannot do that, ma’am. It would be categorized as stealing as I can’t sell another store’s items.
LADY: You know what? I’ll find someone else to help me.
She proceeds to take all items. Throws the one that was ours onto a random shelf as I watched. Screaming that it was terrible customer service for not doing what she asked. (And as I learned after she left) Yelled at my manager for saying the exact same thing I did, angry that she too wouldn’t steal from another store for her. Then power walked out in a huff. That same manager asked me if she bought anything else, worried she’d leave a stupid survey that would hurt our scores. I simply said no she only wanted those.
• All the customers that complain that our fabrics is a mess and our store is a “mess” are the same ones doing it because we all watched them.
• Bless the few mothers that actually control their kids, instead of letting them run around the store using anything and everything as a toy. Such as the family that let their kids break a big glass vase and proceeded to tell no one. But said “oh at that was us” when a manager found them still looking in that area.
• I had a woman tell me that all of our gift cards were disgusting and that she was super mad that we didn’t have birthday themed ones, nor did we have envelopes for them.
• Customers that say “Oh it was this way not too long ago” and roll their eyes when I say “oh well it’s been like this since before I started working here over year ago and when I shopped here before then”
• “The packaging is a little damaged, can I get a discount?
• All of the empty packaging hidden and plainly visible we see all over the store. Clearance, regular, and sometimes empty bolts stuffed into fabric clearance.
• (I was here this day but I know the story) One day, receiving a large truck load, there was a woman looking for an item that wasn’t on the shelf. She then took it upon herself to go into our freight room to look through boxes and totes for her item. One of the managers eventually yelled at her, threw the tote the lady was looking in at that moment out the door, and slammed it shut when she had followed it.
• One lady was looking for an extremely large sized pillow. And was mad that I told her we don’t carry it instead of looking for it. (I was the only one on register are pillows are in the back.) She said she would call back later to ask again. She never did.
• One much older gentleman (who seemed to have a ferret up his but the moment he came into the store) was first angry that he had to take a number to ask for help because it was busy at the counter. It was empty at the register I really don’t know why he didn’t ask me. He refused to have our female manager help him. He turned the male manager, who was cutting for someone else, to ask him for a pattern for a robe. He was told where and how to find them, as my managers were too busy to leave the counter. The gentleman proceeds to just come up to the register. At the same time counter person came back from lunch. MM ran to help me at the register since there was now a rush. The gentleman comes to me and asks if I’m the manager. I say “no it’s the gentleman next m-”. MM interrupting “yes me and the woman in the back.” The gentleman decided to ignore my manager and complain to me like I’m the manager and can do anything about it. Then asks if I can help him find the pattern. I tell him the exact same thing and apologized that I could not leave as we don’t have the people to cover the line. He turns around, fuming, but following my directions. We get through the line and I’m sent to lunch just as the gentleman comes back and he stares at me as I come out from behind the counter, turning as I went around him. “I’m terribly sorry sir but I have to go lunch now as we behind”. His response was to huff and slam the pattern book he had on the register counter my manager was at. Yelling at him to find it. He did, the gentleman then left.
• One time I was trying to get to the register to help out. But I was stuck behind a gaggle of later 20-early 30s women moving two steps at time, blocking the whole walkway between the aisle. They scoffed at me as I said “pardon me” and squeezed between them.
• Hearing “do you work here?” ten times a day, wearing the bright green apron, having all the gear, and doing my job.
• “I found this on your website, why can’t I find it here?!” Clearly says online only or not available in my store.
• Over Christmas a lady tried to return a Christmas light necklace without a receipt, that was clearly different in design and packaging of what we had on display right next to us, claiming she bought it last week. No you didn’t honey.
• We’re still working on a mega huge yarn reset, and there is nothing but complaints about the boxes in the aisles when they should know by now that we obviously don’t have a back room based on the up stock shelves and that we don’t have enough people because they definitely would’ve been working on getting the yarn out.
There’s more than just customer stories though.
• we had 8 stackout fixtures, they took away four, ands expect us to have 20 set
Be creative!
•magazines were moved to right in front of registers, dropping magazine sales, queue item sales, and causing traffic jams when we busy and people are shopping the magazines.
Be creative!
• we are literally drowning in clearance, we have to have it throughout the store including on queue panels, even though they started wanted us to set 11 queue panels months ago with us only really having 10
Be creative!
• they sent over 50 planograms to be done in one week and as I far as I’ve heard that was legit and not an accident which is ridiculous. Being as hours has been cut so much there had only been one or two people able to work in planograms in general
Be creative!
• sending a million sequin ty animals of all sizes to be set in a tiny display and a million boxes of each type of seasonal candy and only giving tiny sections put it. Such as the Easter candy stackout that had three different peeps in one two foot basket and sending five boxes of each one
Be creative!
I don’t understand how much more creative we can get when it feels like our store is getting smaller and smaller as fixtures are taken away or filled and boxes of overstock just keep coming. I love my job, it’s just extremely frustrating how the uppers and customers are treating us.

WEEK TEN: ASSIGNMENT (PROGRESS)
From the beginning of my Assignment #3 brainstorming, I aimed to produce my interview in an A3 poster format, as I wanted to produce an end result that looked like an artwork itself. This meant that my questions and answers had to be precise (which fit into the ‘personality’ that I aimed to display for my subject, the Wassily Chair) as well as choosing images that are of high enough resolution. The main reasoning behind this design choice was that I wanted to be extremely motivated to design something that I myself, would hang on my wall.
During Week 10′s workshop, we focused on the format of a zine, either holding eight or sixteen pages. While doing so, I was starting to think about how much more freedom and space my assignment content could have if I were to choose this format instead. I remembered the zines at the Melbourne Art Book Fair that took different artistic choices, whether it be abstract or following the traditional design of a zine, including page numbers (something I didn’t want to follow as I’ve done this before and wanted to take on a different direction). Choosing a zine format would let me include more elements that I’ve experimented with during workshops such as collage work (sadly would just be digital), adding different typefaces (inspired by the grid typefaces we created in Week 6′s workshop) as well as more images and drawings.
Here are some zine designs I found very inspiring, all following a different approach, and that have now created confusion on which format I would like to do. I was lucky to find a good website that offered all these lovely designs.
Tumblr media
(Bedspread Zine)
I love the way the images are scattered unevenly on the pages.
Tumblr media
(Subjectively Objective)
A simplistic, minimal approach, which my zine will follow as well.
Tumblr media
(Staple Magazine)
This gave me an idea of adding a barcode to my own zine, but creating the lines with my reference list.
Tumblr media
(The Editorial Magazine)
This reminds me of the magazines I used to love when I was younger (eg. Girlfriend Magazine) and their glitzy, crowded, PINK cover designs. Except this is approached in a different way because while Girlfriend magazine’s layout matched its content with shopping and make-up which became a bit overbearing, this magazine’s content contrasts its magazine cover with subjects on literature and music, making it balanced.

Writing!
I'm writing a story about a team of modern operatives sent into the Feywild. It's been loosely inspired by SCP, hard science fiction, changelings, and the fey stories I've read around Tumblr. This is what I've got so far, let me know what you think- I'm always open for constructive criticism! So, without further ado...
“Sir, your son is stable. We’re still waiting for the test results back, but-”
“It’s not my son.”
The doctor fidgeted with her name badge as she sighed. “Professor Mann, I know it’s hard to accept that your child has a cognitive dysfunction, but this hospital has several qualified professionals who-”
“I know all about ‘cognitive dysfunction,’ you bitch. That thing is not my son. My son could feel. Could love. Could-” The man in the sweater choked slightly as he held up a hand, tears in his eyes. “Excuse me… I just…”
The one in the white coat looked down before looking at the one in the sweater. “You haven’t lost him, Professor. He’s still your son, he’ll just be… Different in how he communicates.”
The one in the sweater sighed as he put on his coat. “For the last time. It’s not my son.”
The one in the white coat raised her hand as Mann stormed out of the waiting room, before lowering it with a defeated sigh.
As Dr. Mann got into his car, he simply sat in front of the steering wheel, tears in his eyes as he looked ahead. Looked at the forest where that cursed creature came from. in the rearview mirror to the backseat where his son sat on the way to school. To the passenger-side seat, on which was lying a simple manilla folder with a sheaf of papers sticking out. He slowly looked out to the dark, strange woods surrounding this town before he started his car.
He was going to get his son back.
***
Jonathan Parker sat in the back of a nondescript white van, looking warily at the man across from him. Jonathan was wearing simple attire for this kind of mission- a simple shirt and jeans, on top of which was a tactical vest, containing magazines of rifle ammunition chambered for the ACR that hung from a sling around his shoulder. On his head was a simple combat helmet, a pair of night-vision goggles strapped to it along with a simple headset. On his arms and thighs were thick composite armor, strapped tight to his limbs with Kevlar and Velcro, and on his shoulders were two patches- one distinctive of the American Marines, and the other showing exemplary service in wartime.
The man across from him, on the other hand, was dressed in a black suit, with a red tie hanging in front of his black undershirt and Kevlar vest, which carried only a few magazines for the pistol that was no doubt holstered just under his jacket. His body was deathly thin, and his face deathly pale. What cemented Jon’s distrust, though, was the silver barcode running across the right side of the man’s forehead, accompanied by silver, mechanical eyes and two gloved hands that moved a bit too precisely to be human as the man looked Jon up and down.
“You got a problem?”
Jon was taken aback by the statement, before he spoke in an even, metered voice, choosing his words carefully. “What’s with the barcode?”
“What,” the man barked back in a thick Cockney accent, “you got some kinda issue with Amalgams?”
“No,” he lied, “I just know where they come from.”
“Oooooh, lookit big Mister Pureblood over here, thinkin’ he can judge anyone he frickin’ wants. Yeah, I grew up in the Lowers, so what? Ya think you know everyone’s story just ‘cuz they got augs? Ya don’t even know my name.”
“Fine… What is your name, anyway?”
“Steele Armstrong. Forensic Anthropologist for the FB-goddamn-I. Not all of us are loony cultists, ya prick.”
Jon nodded as he eyed the cyborg. “Steele… Virtue names, right?”
“Yeah. Virtue names. Wanna see why they named me that, ya bigoted arsewipe?”
“He has a point,” chirped a female, static-laced voice next to Jon. “Racism doesn’t tend to be the best first impression.”
Jon turned to look at the slim, catlike robotic frame sitting next to him on the van’s floor, looking rather like a dog as she sat. Her “face” was a small, simple screen, showing lines of diagnostic data as a camera mounted on top of the “head” stared at him, unblinking. An arm sat on her back, folded, but clearly ready for use if needed. Jon, nonetheless, spoke.
"You haven't seen what I've seen."
"If you're referring to your combat record, I’ve seen plenty of footage in your file. Including the seven Geneva violations committed during the Human-Amalgam war and the fifteen committed during your employment with Artemis, Inc."
Steele laughed as laid back in his seat. “Good girl.”
The robot simply looked at Steele in a way that almost conveyed a glare. “I appreciate the solidarity, but my designation is LY0726-B, or ‘Ellie’ if you are feeling cordial. Or 'sir,' if you wish to address me in your proper place," she chirped in an eternally cheerful tone.
“Oooooh,” Steele said as he chuckled some more, “I like this one.”
“If you wish, as your handler for this mission, I could always suspend your participation from this contract. That would, of course, nullify any payment you may have negotiated.”
That, for whatever reason, seemed to immediately shut Steele up. Now it was Jon’s turn to give a brief chuckle before clearing his throat.
“How far out are we?”
“Seven klicks,” said the van’s driver in a voice that exuded boredom.
“You know, I always wanted to see Ireland.”
Ellie turned her head to Jon. “Forgive me for stationing you in a place that values mission-relevance to tourist attractions.”
The two sat, the van filled with nothing but silent, constricting tension, Ellie looking between the two, as if sizing them up, evaluating whether they were really the type who could complete this mission.
“So,” Steele ventured, breaking the silence, “What do you make of the intel?”
Ellie tilted her head to the side. “I do not understand what you mean.”
Jon shrugged. “I’m with the bot. Doesn’t really seem to be anything to make of it. This Mann guy worked a blacksite, his kid went nuts, he blamed it on the stuff he worked with. Open-and-shut case of a pissed employee.”
Steele looked at Ellie, waving dismissively at Jon. “You gotta learn to question things, meatsack. The file said they just found some weird plant growth and a few undocumented species. Why the hell would they lock that down?”
Ellie simply turned her head and stood up. “We do not have sufficient information, and you do not have sufficient clearance, Mr. Armstrong.”
The van suddenly came to a halt, signaling the two to get up as Ellie’s arm pushed the van doors open, the bright light of the outside grating on Jon’s eyes as he climbed out of the van and shut the door behind him, signalling the driver to simply speed off down the road.
Immediately, Jon was on alert. The woods made him uncomfortable as his instincts from his Marine days kicked in. At any point, from any number of angles, a hostile could be watching. Waiting. Taking aim. It certainly didn’t help that, for some reason, in these woods more than any other, he felt as if there were hundreds of eyes staring at him, taking stock of his every move. As his ears strained for the sounds of crunching leaves or breaking twigs, Ellie’s voice cut through the still forest.
“Satellite footage indicates that Dr. Mann entered the forest on an unmarked path near this location. Mr. Parker, seeing as you are the most protected of us, I recommend you lead the way.”
Jon nodded as he shouldered his rifle and the three made their way forwards, slowly disappearing into the dark, warm forest.

Evaluation week 4
This week was the week when I got to start writing my main content for my magazine. To start this week off we had a journalism workshop where I looked at different articles in different magazine so I could know the type of language they use and the tone of the language. With these articles I also looked at the topics they wrote about and how the formatted the page. The articles were from Empire and GQ. The Empire article shows an insight about the Thor Ragnarök, about the cast and why they went with Taika Waititi as a director and why he could do a better job to make the new movie than the previous director. I compared this article with the GQ article of Tom holland. This article shows how Tom Holland’s career progressed from his role in Billie Elliot, to Marvel to his new adult movie Cherry. When comparing I looked at the similarities and differences between the articles, so I know how to write an article.
For task 2 in the workshop, I decided to write my article on how gender is portrayed different in marvel. For this article I wrote mainly about how women is presented in these films and how the Marvel films have been out since 2008 and only recently in 2021 they are getting their own movies and Tv shows. In this article I choose 4 female characters in the marvel cinematic universe and wrote about how they are been presented. The characters I choose was Captain Marvel, Black widow, Lady Sif, and Peggy Carter and showed in each way how they are presented compared to Male superheroes like Captain America, Iron man and Thor. With this I also took a paragraph from my article and wrote it 3 time for 3 different magazines. When doing this I considered tone, language, and structure of the paragraphs. The magazines I choose was Vogue, Elle and Cosmopolitan.
The next thing I did this week was one of my favorites this and this was a perfume advert. For this task I decided to take photo of 6 different perfumes I had. This included Connect her by Fcuk, Rive Gauche by Yves saint Laurent, pure orchid by Halle, a perfume by Nicole, princess by Vera Wang and Live Luxe by Jenifer Lopez. I then picked 3 perfumes and created them into adverts using Canva and procreate. To do these perfumes I removed the background form the perfume images and place them onto the document and created cool background by using a gradient or blurring images of flowers. One of the adverts I decided to do an advertorial and write 2 paragraphs about the product with a discount code, pull quote and a reflect from the perfume and the objects that come with the perfume.
The next thing I did this week was make my front cover for my magazine. With this part I had to overcome one major obstacle which was my Master head I had to change my master head from Enchantress to Amoura as the word Enchantress was too long and it didn’t fit on the magazine cover unless I changed the font size but then I thought it wouldn’t stand out. The title I choose was still similar as it its enchantress from the marvel comics first name and it also means love. I created my cover on Canva and used one of the images I already took when I was creating the T shirt advert. This is so I can use this image and it doesn’t go to waste. I then enhance the image to make it more photogenic and stand out more against the typography of the coverlines and articles with this I also added a barcode, the issue type and the month and year that this edition would come out in. By adding these can make it seem more like a mainstream magazine than an independent magazine.
I also decided to work on some more journalism pieces for my magazine. To do this I looked at 3 mainstream lifestyle fashion magazines that I have at home and thought about the articles and pages I wanted to produce. I then decided to create a new upcoming series and seasons to look forward to this year. This page shows 8 of the top seasons and series that will be coming out in 2022, when creating this page I decided to choose series that interest me and things I’ve seen so I can write about, this allowed me to use my memory and knowledge about the series and write about what we expect to see from the trailer, the ending of the seasons and what the directors and cast have told us about the series and seasons. The next page I wrote about is a music page for the top 10. I thought that I should keep this page simplistic as the readers will only be interested in the songs and not the writing on the page, this led me to using a website I found and logging in with my Spotify login so I can find my top 10 songs of the month and show it on a receipt, which can make my magazine unique and one of a kind.

Magazine Proposal
DESIGN STUDIO II ASSIGNMENT #3 : PROPOSAL FOR MAGAZINE/BOOK (15%)
I want to make a magazine about Emma Chamberlain, showcasing a timeline of the evolution of her success. As a high school dropout, Chamberlain started her journey on YouTube to now owning her coffee brand business and being the face of a famous fashion brand that grant her access to fashion shows and galas. This magazine will present the most significant milestones that she acquired in less than five years, as she is only 20 years old that succeed because of her supporters on social media. My goal is to show who is Emma Chamberlain and give pertinent information to have more people following her journey. I will be exploring different stages of her life through the themes of influence, fashion, growth, mental health, and success.
The magazine will be divided into three segments of her life: 1) her life before YouTube (OR her life when starting YouTube, before the fame), 2) when she got famous (the opportunities that she got, how her life changed), and 3) her life now:
ONE would show the reason why she started YouTube and her school life at that moment.
TWO will show her influence as a YouTuber for her teen audience, the beginning of sponsorships/collaborations, and her life in Los Angeles.
THREE will show her life now, all the opportunities that she got because of social media: magazine covers, podcast, Louis Vuitton, coffee brand, Adidas sponsorship.
My inspiration is based on the concept of a biography book. I will gather information throughout the Internet, specifically articles about her and interviews. I can check what is accurate (public information) as I’ve been following her on the Internet early on in her career. I have in my possession an autobiographical book by a duo of Youtubers called “Don't Try This at Home!” by Jc Caylen and Kian Lawley. I will investigate what type of information I can search for and add to my magazine to be relevant. For example, in Caylen and Lawley's book, there are several excerpts of interviews (dialogues), which I will add in my magazine to diversify from big chunks of text.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My inspiration also will be from the DIY Magazine, based in United Kingdom, that offers a free printed and an online version. What I like about their online is that since it’s a music publication, it is interactive; they use HTML links that offers the possibility to be directed to places they put (the artist’s social media links). Also, the magazine itself is designed in a way that it is probably directed to young adults, because the pages are very colourful and a lot of fun fonts. I like their advertisement pages, where there’s a poster of an artist or band. I would like to do so with my subject’s coffee brand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My information (content for the magazine) will be gathered from liable websites like ABC News, Cosmopolitan UK, Vogue, and more.
The magazine will be available online for the possibility to include hyperlinks for the reader to be able to click a link to jump to other locations (websites, documents, ...) in the same document. QR codes will also be added for the possibility to still go to other locations by scanning the barcodes if the magazine is printed. As she is an Internet sensation, it is fundamental to keep the concept of a digital magazine. The possibility of an online magazine gives the possibility to not only add links, but also videos as she is initially a YouTuber and is still uploading new videos each week as we are speaking. Additionally, she had an online shop for her coffee brand (Chamberlain Coffee), a merchandise online store, and a podcast (‎Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain) available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
The magazine will take the usual dimension on a standard magazine, which is approximatively 8.5 by 11 inches for a page. I will be using InDesign to create all my spreads. I will be using some skills I learned in my Design Studio 1 course as well as looking into online tutorials to learn how to include hyperlinks, for example. I will probably work equally on Photoshop and Illustrator to edit some images or design a graphic to add in my InDesign document.
Depending on the content of the pages, I will be switching from a grid layout (Making the Grid) to something more abstract (Breaking the Grid). ‘’Choosing or developing a grid for a project depends on understanding these qualities, knowing what kinds of grids there are, and the possibilities for how type (and images) might interact within the structure.’’ (20) However, most of my pages’ layout will be based following the grid method primarily and then do modification or add elements that I find interesting from “Breaking the Grid” that I can combine.
I feel it would be important to keep a grid layout for my table of content and to keep the format structures of the page number and the runner so that readers won’t feel lost when searching for a specific page based on those components. As my magazine is to present this “Internet sensation”, the pages need to be readable. (22) However, I also want to integrate more creative pages where I break the conventions of the pages and play with the design, as Emma Chamberlain is a creative individual when it comes to styling fashion or editting videos.
I also would like to include dramatic margins following the block text that is positioned lower on the page and a bit off the center—to leave space for images or shapes—or just putting a blank margin when other components are not necessary (will make the page too heavy) (25).
Column grids will be the most useful and the grid that I will be taking inspiration from to layout my text or images, even if I decide to distort my text to not be rectangular anymore (27).
Textual inclusions are essential to catch the reader’s attention away from the main paragraph/text to give reading break. The chosen quote also serves as a hook to foreshadow in the reading. I like the example where the textual inclusion is moved away from the main text column (37).
Other pages that might inspire me are page 41 (adding lines), 55, 97 (titles), and 98 (modular grids, boxes).
Now for “Breaking the Grid”: In the pages on “Splitting, Splicing, and Shifting”, I like this idea of juxtaposing titles and texts on top of each other and playing with slicing images to step away from what is conventional (from Tenazas Design):
Images that might originally have occupied left- and right-hand columns have been spliced and reordered to create a strong vertical substructure (137).
As this example is with images, the same thing can be done with titles.
The concept of changing the shape of the text box to create a new shape is also something that I find interesting enough to integrate into my magazine. The example shown in the textbook is from Timothy Samara on page 139, where he curves the text boxes to look like waves. It is possible to wrap text around a specific silhouette, so I want to take from this idea of curvilinear deformations for inspiration. For example, I can deform my text column to resemble a set of stairs when talking about my subject’s appearance in fashion festivals.
Page 147 gives numerous compositional structures that can be used to display images. The ones that got my attention is rational, radial, and chaining/helical. Radial inspires me to put images of my subject from the same photoshoot to show the variety of poses.
Other pages that can be useful are page 159 (text following a path shaped like the image), 161 (photo strips), and 162 (vernacularism, or more like pictorializing on page 170).

Front cover edit process 1
Tumblr media
Firstly i created a gradient going across a A4 page. I used colours that i thought would have been used in the 80s. They had to be cheerful and be of at least 4 different colours, so i used pastel pink, yellow, green and blue. I then cut out a image of a authentic 80s fashion photo, then made 3 more copies and added a different colour overlay to each that was already used within the gradient to keep the the colour scheme i had chosen to use. I then placed these behind the original image and offset each overlay under the other so that you could see a slither of each colour. I thought that the effect that it created when i did this made the image stand out as a main component of the design. I then drew in some shapes and placed them at either corner of the design. I added a leopard print to one of them as this was a vector that is common in 80s style design. I wanted my design to look framed so i used the rectangle tool to create a border on the design and added the same gradient i used in the background to the stroke, which made the design look more structured.
Tumblr media
I then added a series of thin diamond shaped white lines to the top left hand corner to add more vectors and geometrical components to my design. I also added in a yellow circle and then beveled the circle along with the shape in the bottom right hand corner of the design. I did this to make them look 3D and add a component of depth to the front cover. I also assed some thin rectangles in to the design and made them pink, blue and pink.
Tumblr media
Finally i created another circle but left the fill blank and the stroke a thin white. I then erased sections on the circle to make it look dotted, once this was done i then slightly offset this white circle from the original yellow one. I then found images of a moon, palm trees and New York and proceeded to cut these out and add colour overlays to them that were already included within my colour scheme. I decreased the opacity of these colour overlays so that some of the details within the images were still visible. I did this because if i didn't they would just be blocks of colour and would look very out of place and boring. Lastly i added the logo to the center of the design so it was a main component of the design.
After reflection, I regretted not referencing my blog research as i found that this design i had created looked nothing like a magazine cover. I came to this conclusion because the design was lacking some main components that would make the design recognizable as a cover of a magazine. Some of these include; a barcode, a header, short sentences advertising what is in the magazine, more imagery and more vectors. So i will keep the colour scheme and some of the imagery but the design will need to be heavily altered.
