Secrets
Jim Street X Reader
Street helps the writer through a panic attack.
A/N: I hope you all like this drabble !!!
Y/N’s POV
Tumblr media
Swat was a amazing job and you were so greatful that you got to be apart of it. Being one of the elites and fiding a family was something that you were beyond greatful for.
But being apart of the elite meant that you had to be on top of everything and leaving no room to have anything wrong.
You knew about your anxiety diagnosis sense you were little it was something that you manged and took medications for. The only problem was that you kept it out of your medical history.
You were afraid they wouldn't think you were quailifed enough and that your dreams would be over before it would start. So you kept it hidden and any time you had a flare up you would say you would try and hide it.
It was nothing personal you just knew you had to keep it to yourself. It wasn't like it was going to affect them. You all were super close but they didn't have to know everything about you.
Usually you were fine you would take your medications and practice your excersies you had. Like breathing techniques and even journaling to help you.
Being on the job for a couple of years know you quickly learned how to take the moments for yourself. To slip away and take the self care you needed.
But it was hard though always wondering if someone was gonna find out. Or wondering you were going to have a panic attack on the scene holding a weapon or fighting with the suspect.
It always just felt like a big ticking bomb that was being held over your head.
Was you making the best descion for you? And was it the best one for your teamates and society. Was this anxiety a big deal or not at all ?
Everytime you thought about it you had a panic attack just thinking about it.
Today was a different day. Today was a hard one it was just call after call and you were high paced all day long.
You could feel your anxiety setting in strong and the panic attacks felt like they were gonna happen.
You couldn't do any of the normal thing you usually did during the day to help.
Your hands were shaking and your leg was bouncing. Thankfully everyone was sitting around and doing their own thing.
You were sitting in the lounge room watching tv with Street and Tan. they were making you watch some show that you weren’t paying attention to.
You were so wrapped in your thoughts. You were thinking about everything and anything at all once.
It just felt like your mind was spinning and you were trying to claw your way out of a hole but couldn’t get out. Street looked over at you and he gave you a concerned look on his face.
But you didn’t even notice. You began to feel you breathing getting labored and you were getting lightheaded. So you got up and ran out of the room. You didn’t know where you were going but you just knew you had to get out of there
You just kept walking and ended walking outside. The warm sunlight was hitting you all over and it did feel nice.
You walked over to the nearest bench and your legs were shaking and you felt like it was taking forever to get there. Each step it just felt like you were getting further and further away.
Suddenly you felt these hands on the back of you trying to give you some support.
You were worried when you realized when someone was behind you. Worrying if it was all going to come out.
But then when you felt the familar warm touch you always craved you knew who it was instanly.
“Hey it’s okay I got you” Street said
You sat on the bench and then he got in front of you an kneeled down. You bent over your hands were cradling your face.
Jim took your hands and removed them from your face. You looked a total mess your face was red and your face was all wet from crying.
He was making you look at him. He had a look of concern written all over his face. Then he took his free hand he had and started rubbing your back which made you feel better and helped you calm down.
“Hey talk to me, okay and breathe just breathe it’s gonna be okay” Street said in a soft voice.
“It’s nothing okay I’m fine” You said breaking eye contact with him.
“It’s not nothing what happened I mean i know it’s been a long day just had a moment” You said not looking at him.
“Is it anxiety or something” Jim asked.
You didn’t really say anything to him just started down at the bottom of your feet.
“Hey don’t do that don’t shut me out i’m just worried about you” Jim said.
You lifted yourself up and sat up straight. Taking your hands and wiping your face.
You started taking deep breaths trying to get yourself back in order. You were struggling on what to answer because you were worried Street would go and tell Hondo or someone because he was worried about you.
You knew he only had pure intentions but you still didn’t want the whole team to know. But the way he was looking at you wanted to just spill your heart out to him.
Looking at him in the eyes you decided to take the gamble and tell him.
“ I have pretty bad anxiety and panic attacks i take medications for” You said.
Jim got up and you started worrying again thinking where the hell was he off to. He sat down next to you. He then took you and pushed you close to him. So you were leaning up against his body.
“I’m not gonna tell anyone. If that’s what your worried about” JIm said.
You felt like a giant weight had been lifted off your chest once he said that.
“Thank you really I mean it’s nothing bad It’s just some stuff I want to be personal” You said.
“No i get that were all together all the time it’s hard to keep some kind of boundary” Jim said.
“So what about you i need a big secret so incase you tell mine i’ll tell yours” You said.
“Now why would I tell you something major then” Jim said laughing.
“Because i know most of your shit so you got something and i need leverage you won’t tell then you got nothing to worry about” You said laughing.
“Fine okay here goes I have a crush on someone from work” Street said.
You got up and looked at him with a surprised face. Not knowing this so this was huge news.
“Well who is it do I know her” You asked.
Street looked at you and smiled. He had this big goofy look on his face.
“Yeah you know her and nope that’s all the information you get’ Street said smiling.
“Wait come on this isn’t fair you gotta tell me something I’ll die if I don’t know” You said pleading with him.
Suddenly the bells went off and that meant you all had to roll.
“This isn’t over Street” You said getting up
You both started jogging over to Black Betty.
“Now we both have secrets” Street said winking at you and getting in the back of the car.
Damn you never regretted something more in your life then you did right now

Wrong Place, Wrong Time - Jim Street (S.W.A.T)
Tumblr media
plot: going into labor while visiting Street at work and being stuck due to a lockdown.
character: Jim Street x pregnant! reader + Deacon x reader + Luca x reader
a/n: Someone requested this but I couldn't stop writing so I turned it into a one-shot 😅 sorry I was so excited!
Tumblr media
It was a busy day at S.W.A.T HQ but you didn’t know that when you made an appearance to say hi to your husband Jim. You were out with friends for brunch before going home you thought about stopping by to say hi to the team. The first person you saw was David, you smiled at him and he came over to greet you.
“Hi Y/n!” he gave you a hug “How are you doing?” he looked you up and down.
“Hi David. I’m good and you?” You asked.
“Just swamped right now but good.” He answered honestly.
“How’s things with being pregnant?” he looked at your belly.
“Ugh so much harder than I thought.” You pouted “I thought it was going to be easy and fun and I’m like a unicorn but no it wasn’t.”
He gave a short laugh “Well don’t worry any day now the baby is coming and it’s gonna be different.”
“Well you are an expert at that so I should take your word for it.” You both smiled at each other.
Just before you could about your husband, he showed up looking worried.
“Y/n!” he came rushing to your side.
“Hey you” you smiled at him.
“What’s wrong? Are you alright? Is it the baby?” he took hold of your hands and started looking for anything that didn’t look right.
“Easy there tiger” David started and that made Jim look at him “She’s here to make your day better.”
He nodded at him then David excused himself. Jim turned his focus on you and gave you a long hug.
“Okay now I gotta ask you.” You said while hugging him back “Are you okay?”
He gave you one of his cute smiles that showed his dimples “Deacon was right I feel much better now.” He didn’t let you go completely and was still holding to your arms.
You were a little suspicion about that, but you knew his job wasn’t that easy. Tan came running and passed you two “Street we got an update.”
“What’s going on in here?” you said looking around, seeing everyone on edge.
“I’m sorry baby it’s just bad timing. We’re dealing with something right now.” Street said while rubbing your arms trying to keep you calm.
“You go help out I’ll leave and see you at home.” He was hesitated to leave you.
“Go” you encouraged him “I’ll be fine.” You gave him a gentle push.
He gave you a soft kiss before running after Tan. You hoped they all ended the day on a good note and prayed silently for their safety. As you were making your way to the door you felt pain, but at this point it was normal because it was close to your due day. You were feeling pain all through your pregnancy but each one was different depending on your stage. You stopped to take deep breaths.
“Oh hey are you alright Y/n?” you heard Luca’s voice before seeing him.
He stepped in to help if he could “Are you alright?” he offered you his hand to grab if you needed it and God you did. You took hold and squeezed.
“Here let’s help you sit down on the chair.” You barley made it to the chair
“Should we call Street?” Luca was rubbing your back to ease the pain.
“No.” You said firmly “There’s no need to scare him.”
The pain stopped “Oh the pain stopped” you stood up straight then looked at Luca.
Before Luca was able to reply the alarm noise boomed in the whole building. Everyone looked around then their training took over, the whole building was on lock down. The alarm scared you and you took hold of Luca’s arm.
“What’s happening?” your voice was shaky.
“We’ve been dealing with hackers all day. If I have to take a guess they must be trying to get into our system.”
Just then Jim came running, he was looking for Luca when he saw you.
“I thought you left?” his eyes were wide.
“Sorry I was double sided a little bit.” You gave him a weak smile.
“Come on we’ll let you rest in Hick’s office until we finish dealing with this.”
You both made your way to Hick’s office, and Jim went out of his way to make you feel comfortable as you will be in there for a while.
“All done” he said as he fluffed the last pillow and turned to see you looking at him with heart eyes.
“What?”
“Nothing” you moved closer to him “I just think you’re the best husband, trying to make me feel comfortable here while your team is out there doing their work.”
“isn’t that why you marry me?” he smiled with those cute dimples.
“That and for many other reasons.” You kissed him.
When you parted he saw your eyes widened, you looked down at your legs and his eyes followed yours.
“I think my water broke!” you said panicking.
“I think so too.”
He grabbed your arms to help you sit down on the sofa, Jim was used to stressful situations and situations that made most people panic and freak out. He knew exactly how to be calm and process everything at once, so when your water broke, he was exactly what you needed by your side. He was there for the birth classes with you, he didn’t miss not one class. He read every book he could find about pregnancy and childbirth, he wanted to be ready for the whole thing just in case something happened.
“You remember the breathing exercises?” you nodded “Well it’s time to put them into test, okay?” he told you in a very calming voice.
“Give me a minute baby I’m gonna call someone” he held his phone to his ears.
He was still holding your hand while he talked to someone on the phone.
“Yeah we’re in the Hick’s office……… yeah her water just broke.” You couldn’t hear the rest of the conversation because of the contraction, you pressed on Jim’s hand hard while controlling your breathing. He ended the phone call and got down to your level.
“Hey sweetheart just keep breathing.” He grabbed your other hand and press a kiss to it.
There was a knock on the door and Deacon showed up “Hey guys I thought you might need a hand here.”
Jim and David did everything they could to make you feel at ease, it was the longest 30 minutes of your entire life. But you had your husband with you the whole time, so you kept on focusing on the positive things and not get your mind the on the negative. David was also here and he has four kids and they all healthy so he’s a trained professional on childbirths right now, when you told him that he laughed “Yeah you’re right about that, so there’s no need to be worried as long as I’m here.”
He also called an ambulance that was waiting for you outside as soon as the lockdown was over. The contractions were getting 4 minutes apart by now, the team was working as fast as they could. Thanks to both Luca and Tan they manage to find their target, the people behind all of this. Even thought Jim was slowly getting stressed about his baby being born here in HQ he wants to make sure that both you and the baby were fine, thankfully David was there.
As soon as the lockdown was lifted the EMT got into the building and head straight to you, they manage to get you to the hospital in record time. Your doctor was already waiting for you, you forced them to let Jim in with you they were against it at first until
“Listen to me if you want to baby to get out of me in the smoothest way possible without any risk of me being stubborn then my husband will be in there with me. You got that?”
You were so serious than the nurse was terrified of you so she let him in. The whole team were waiting for any news about what’s happening in there. After 2 hours Jim Street walks in the waiting room with a big smile on his face.
“It’s a girl!” he announced putting both his arms up “And Y/n is fine, she’s resting.”
A round of hugs and congratulations went around the room.
“Hey Deacon Y/n wants to see you first.” Jim told him.
They both walked in and saw you holding your little girl in your arms, you look happy and tired at the same time. Jim took her from your arms and gave her a kiss before handed her to Deacon.
“Wow she’s so beautiful.” He rocked her lightly looking at both of you.
“We wanted you to be the first to meet her.” Jim started.
“Yeah, we thought that she would want to meet her godfather.” You continued.
David’s head turned towards the both of you shocked “Are you sure?”
“Yeah of course, we’re sure!” you both said.
“She wouldn’t be here without all your help today, David.” You smiled at him “So thank you for everything.”
He smiled “Well let’s just hope she has her daddy’s looks but mother’s behavior.”
Both you and him laughed while Jim acted like he was offended.
“Say that to the poor nurse her mom threatened on the way to the delivery room.”

DOMINIC LUCA ONE-SHOT
Tumblr media
-I don’t think this is a good idea- said Jessica Cortez to her friend
-it’s our only chance- said Maya - plus… I like dancing- Jessica sighted, indeed it was the only way to take down the Russian gang down. The plan was simple, Maya going to the strip club, making the boss ask for a private dance and making him talk.
-Okay, you’re going tomorrow-
-everything is going to be fine- said Maya with a big smile-well I’m going to set everything, see you tomorrow- Maya leave the place while Jessica called her SWAT team.
-Hondo, Luca you’re staying with her as the “bodyguards” if she says bring me the wine is the safe word to attack.-Luca an Hondo hesitated, Maya has never been in action before so they feel nervous about this whole operation. -Deac, Tan, Chris and Street are going to stay outside waiting for your signal to enter Hondo.-
-Okay, let’s get ready- said Hondo watching Luca, and everybody left the room.
•The next day•
-I’m ready- said Maya entering the room with a beautiful (and short) gold dress, her beautiful long hair was loose and her makeup was just sparkling… all of her looked like gold. All the eyes where on her but she didn’t even notice, all her focus was on the operation.
-Okay remember Maya- said Hondo in his bodyguard disguise -you’re Ramona, the star of the strip club and you hire Rooster and Gene as your bodyguards- Maya said yes with your head, she notice how Luca was silent looking at her, he seemed nervous but she couldn’t get why, he was always excited and ready for a mission.
-Yes Gene, don’t worry- Maya winked her eye at both of them- let’s get going, my show is about to start!-
-I’ll be fine- said maya behind the stage with her mic on so Luca and Hondo could hear-I got you guys taking care of me, nothing could go wrong.- with that said Luca smiled.
-And now the star of our show…- began to said the owner of the club
-Okay he’s in the first row- began to said Luca to the mic -white as a ghost, red suit and the ugliest face I’ve ever seen- Maya laughed, she feel relived now that Luca was more calm.
-RAMONA- and with that said, Maya enter the stage dancing, she could feel the lust eyes of Sergej, the Russian, all over her body.
-Hey Luca, when I said eyes on her all the time I don’t meant like THAT- Hondo laughed while looking at Luca, who couldn’t care less about what Hondo was saying, he was only looking at her. But the ones out the strip waiting for Hondo signal where laughing imagining the scene.
-Excuse me, are you Ramona’s bodyguard?- said a guy approaching Luca, who returned to his reality
-Yes, me and my friend Gene over there- said Luca in a serious tone pointing at Hondo who was across the room.
-Good, my boss would like a private time with her- Luca had mixed feelings, happy because everything was going as planned but angry and nervous of that man being too close to Maya.
-Absolutely, do you have the money to pay her private time?
-Of course with do- said that man with a funny tone, making fun of that question.
-Come with us- said Luca and he took the man and Sergej to the room where Maya was.
-You’re absolutely beautiful- said Sergej with a really strong Russian accent and an evil smile -and you’re dance was spectacular!- Maya give a fake smile, but yet, a nice one so Sergej didn’t even notice it wasn’t sincere.
-thank you sir.- Maya begin to say with a flirty tone of voice -youre too kind.- the Russian bodyguard was near Luca and Hondo who were in front of the door watching the whole interaction, but Luca was more focus on her.
-I want you to be my partner, my girlfriend- said the Russian man to her, she was surprised, she wasn’t expecting that preposition - You’re beautiful and I’m going to give you everything you want, you can leave thin place forever.- Luca and Hondo looked at Maya, who was analyzing what to say
-do you know how many man have told me that they’re going to take me out of here?- said Maya getting closer to Sergej -How can I know you’re telling the truth?-
-Tell your bodyguards to leave- said the Russian pointing Hondo and Luca -and I’ll tell you- Luca was worried, and very angry ¿why he wanted them to leave? ¿What if he does something to her?
-Fine- said Maya looking at Luca -but tell also your man to leave- and with that said, Sergej said something in Russian and his man got out the room. -Rooster, Gene- continue Maya -please also leave- Hondo leave but Luca stay a little bit longer, looking at her, promising to himself to always take care of her. And just then, he left the room.-
A few minutes had passed but from outside the room nothing could be heard.
-stop going around so many times, you’re going to make me dizzy- said Hondo looking how Luca was nervously going around
-Sorry man, I’m just nervous- said Luca standing in front of him -I don’t like the silence-
-I know, but everything is going fine, so don’t worry- Luca smiled a little bit
-Rooster, Gene- shouted Maya -Can you bring the wine, please?- Luca and Hondo looked at each other, that was the sign.
-Bring the wine to the star- said Hondo to the mic, for Deac and the other squad to hear. -Let’s go- and with that said, Hondo run to room and shouted -LAPD EVERYBODY TO THE GROUND- the Russian man take out the gun and began to shoot Luca and Hondo, while Sergej punched Maya and took her pointing a gun to her head. Hondo took down the Russian, and Luca looked at Maya.
-Let her go- said Luca furious pointing with his gun at Sergej -NOW- Maya stomped her foot hard with her heel, making the other man shout with pain while Luca shoot him in the shoulder and taking Maya into his arms.
-Hey Rooster- said Maya getting closer to Luca, she was in the doctor the whole night because of the injuries Sergej left to Maya after the hit he gave her, Luca stayed at the hospital waiting for her.
-Hey! Maya- Luca hugged her, he was worried about her -how are you feeling?-
-better, we got him, that’s all that matters- and she have him a huge and beautiful smile.
-I was worried about you.-
-I know-
-how do you know that?- said Luca funny
-You’ve got your mic on this whole time- and then his smile disappeared, she could hear how he admitted to Chris and Street his mad crush on her, how Hondo make fun of him and how obvious he was… his whole face got red while Maya laughed with tenderness.
-Maya… I’m so sorry, I didn’t…- and than she interrupted him with a kiss.-
-I had a big mad crush on you too-

There are so many posts about the weirdness around Nina and Maggie, but the thing that has always bothered me the most is that both of them know Aziraphale but neither one of them seems to know Crowley. Like, at ALL. Not even by sight. Which doesn’t make any sense. For the last four years, Crowley has basically been unemployed and homeless (this sentence made me so sad to type). He has had literally NOTHING to do except hang out at Aziraphale’s bookshop. And the vibe at the beginning of s2 is that he’s there a LOT. Like, multiple times per week (“we both get plenty of use out of it, don’t we”). When Aziraphale calls him in the first episode, he says “2 minutes” the way you tell your spouse how long until you’re home from the grocery store, especially if you were on your way home already.
The dialogue goes to great lengths to highlight that Nina and Maggie SHOULD know Crowley, which just heightens the weirdness of it. When they're at the pub, Crowley asks Aziraphale, “What’s wrong with the cafe?” (implying they usually go to the cafe), but Aziraphale made a point of introducing Crowley to Nina in the first episode. And Nina makes a point of saying to Maggie that she always remembers “the regulars," but she doesn't seem to remember Crowley. Of course, she immediately notices both Jim and Muriel outside the bookshop, so she's clearly paying attention to what's happening in the neighborhood and it seems like she couldn't have failed to spot him coming and going all the time.
And Maggie's situation is even weirder. Her whole back story is that she basically grew up IN the bookshop because her grandmother’s record store was essentially in a corner of the bookshop. And yet, when Maggie and Nina see Crowley on the street right before the lightning strike, Nina says, “Do you see that bloke? Six shots of espresso and he's smoking,” and Maggie responds, “I think that man was just struck by lightning.” Which is something you say about someone you’ve never laid eyes on before. She didn’t say, “Oh, that’s Mr. Fell’s friend,” or “I’ve seen him around. He stops by Mr. Fell’s shop a lot.” And then when he comes back, "It's him. The one who was just struck by lightning. The six shots of espresso." Again, no flash of recognition of anything before the current day. This happens immediately after she's just told Nina about knowing Aziraphale since she was little. It’s just weird. Why build a back story that would put her in extremely close proximity to Crowley LITERALLY her entire life and then write dialogue that makes it clear she's never laid eyes on him before?
You could maybe think, well they're just so used to having to hide...but then I asked myself: Does it make sense that the day that you find out there is an extremely dangerous, existence-threatening problem hiding out in your ineffable husband's bookshop is also the day that you would decide to STOP keeping a low profile and start wandering the streets with abandon, introducing yourself to all the local shopkeepers, and ferrying large plants into and out of said bookshop? No. No, it does not.
In any other show, you could assume that the writers just didn’t think about it very carefully. But, given the layers and layers of meaning and symbolism baked into every detail of this show, from the dialogue, to the costuming, the set design, lighting, blocking, etc., and the way that the story folds back on itself again and again, it just feels significant.

Discussion Film provides a summary of what the extended trailer was geared at Cinemacon 2024.
I’m going to copy the entire blurb here with the link. There’s no need for me to rewrite it.
Tumblr media
CinemaCon 2024 only got a very brief look at Sonic the Hedgehog 3 since it barely wrapped production. The brief teaser showed Jim Carry’s Dr. Robotnik in his lab, but he’s gained weight and has let the place go to the dumps with it being full of junk. He’s let his hair go crazy and now has a noticeable belly. Robotnik jokingly says that he’s been binging “carbohydrates.” His assistant, Agent Stone (Lee Majdoub), comes in and says, “We found him.” Stone presents Robotnik with one of Sonic’s blue electric quills, and, as he’s done before, Robotnik licks it and tweaks out. He yells, “Let’s do this!” to Stone’s face, which then cuts to a montage of Robotnik getting his hair cut by Stone and getting a fresh look with his game-accurate mustache, bald head, and depraved-looking eyes.
The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 footage then cuts to Robotnik and an entire gang of henchmen, all armored with laser guns, waking up Shadow the Hedgehog in a cryotube. Shadow opens his eyes, which are bursting with red electric energy. We then cut to Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and Knuckles (Idris Elba) facing off against Shadow in the middle of a huge city street at night. Shadow is noticeably dead silent as it’s still not revealed who the voice actor is. Knuckles jokes that this new Hedgehog is much stronger than the last one he faced, to which Sonic hilariously replies with, “You Mean me?”
The real money shot of the footage is Shadow the Hedgehog riding a motorcycle in the night sky over some skyscrapers and then using it to bounce himself towards Sonic, who is flying upwards at him at full speed. We see Sonic’s bright blue power clash with Shadow’s bright red energy in the night sky, looking like it’s straight out of an anime. The final shot of the exclusive footage showed Robotnik and Sonic away from a ring portal on an empty road. They both look grumpy and like they can’t stand each other’s company — implying that they’re going to have to work together to defeat Shadow.

Barbara Gordon is a lost Clone of Jazz Fenton
So, years ago the GIW or Vlad or Somebody decided to try and clone Jazz. (Probably GIW)
It was supposed to be an experiment to see how well Liminals could be cloned, or if they could be turned back into a Human/turned even more Liminal. Unfortunately, the experiment took place around the same time Danny began his campaign to take down the GIW, attacking multiple bases across the US. The single Viable Clone that was created escaped the Lab it was held in during the attack and ran into the nearby City, Gotham.
The Clone managed to survive on the streets for a few weeks before being found by a Cop named Jim Gordon, and adopted.
She was given a new name, Barbara Gordon, and she mostly forgot that portion of her life before getting her new Family.
Then, over a decade later, Barbara Gordon was shot in the Spine and paralyzed. Or, she should have been. See, as it turns out the Scientists managed to impart just a little bit of Liminality into her when they made her, not enough to be noticeable but just enough to let her heal from wounds that should have been permanent. (Basically any wound will heal if given enough time, nothing is permanent)
It did take a while, but since the wound never stopped healing like it should have, she eventually regained the ability to use her legs after about 3 years.
Also, while her spine was healing her Linimal Powers were activate for the first time in her life, meaning her Ecto-Signature was more powerful than usual. That meant that it could be sensed for the first time ever.
So one day, after a shift at the Library, Barbara is on her way home when a lady walking past her stops and starts stating intently at her.
Ellie didn't expect to meet her new sister like this, but life (afterlife?) works in strange ways.

Uptight – Jim Halpert
This is just a little cutesy one-shot with our favorite golden retriever: Jim Halpert. I think he needs more writings done with readers or even Pam. Honestly, it would just be fun to read about him more. I kinda wanna do a part 2 on this... idk... I hope you like it!!
Tumblr media
Everyone knew Jim Halpert. Jim Halpert knew everyone well enough. He talked to people, smiled and laughed with them, and pranked stuck up asses.
Well… except you…
You were uptight, in a work way. You never slacked off, only took off when you were sick. Which was never.
You sat with Jim and Dwight, usually typing and helping clients set up their paper orders.
Jim thought you were beautiful. So average, so basic, so perfect. Sometimes, he would wonder to himself, as he glanced at you, how different would you act outside of work?
His small friendly crush was a secret to everyone, especially you. Jim knew I’d you found out, his life, with you, would be over. Forever.
Today was a normal day in the office— you working your ass off while Jim annoyed Dwight a little by talking louder than usual.
It annoyed you as well, but you didn’t say anything.
“Anyways” Jim said to nobody on the phone, “I cannot believe that that happened!” He half yelled, making you sigh.
Jim glanced at you, his face falling. You were annoyed. He could tell by the cute frown on your face and the face you were chewing your gum a bit harsher then normal.
“I have to get back to you,” he said quietly, glancing away, “bye,”
Although it was a fake call, he set the phone down.
Glancing over at you, seeing that you were already staring back at him, made his heart flutter softly.
“Thanks,” was all you said to him, the first thing you said to him since yesterday, and soon, the receiver was up to your ear from an incoming call.
Jim felt his heart warm at your cold statement. You were like a cat, he was like a dog. How funny.
——
The rest of the day went by smoothly, in your opinion. The room had finally been put at a comfortable temperature, since some people liked it colder than others.
You looked at the clock and hummed. Exactly five, so you got up and grabbed your old red leather purse and the cardigan you brought.
Without saying goodbye, you pushed in your chair and left the office, hearing scrapes from other people’s desk chairs as they left.
Leaving the reception, when you stepped out the rain that was forecasted earlier had come ten times harder than told in the weather news this morning.
Your umbrella was in your car, which was across the street.
“Oh my gosh…” you whispered angrily to yourself, watching the cloud.
Jim walked out a few seconds behind you, seeing that you were trying to drape your favorite cardigan over your head, now looking rather annoyed.
He could help but smile, seeing he could be the knight in shining armor.
“You want me to walk you?” Jim said to your right. You looked up slightly to see the sweet smile of Jim Halpert, holding a black umbrella in between the two of you.
You hummed, looking down to hide a smile. “Yes, please,” you whispered shamefully, “I didn’t know it was going to rain this hard…”
Jim laughed. “Nor did I. This is Michael’s umbrella,”
You gasped, your eyebrows furrowing. “Jim!” You said, about to tell him off.
With the happiest laugh you heard, Jim started chuckling, showing off his cute lopsided smile.
A warmth bubbled in your stomach, your heart beating ever so much faster.
“I’m just joking,” he said cheekily, “let’s go,”
The two walked in silence, you blushing like mad, Jim smiling like a goon. It was cute for the cameras to record.
Michael watched through the blinds with the cameras, sighing.
“Office romance: the sweetest kind of romance, in my opinion."

How to Survive Gotham as a Goon
Late one evening, a goon is there to witness his boss – Red Hood – shoot at Robin. Which means he goes through the five stages of grief as he imagines all the ways Batman will skin them, trying to get Red Hood to stop before it’s too late, which only leaves him with more questions.
On AO3.
Ships: none
Warnings: references to violence & gun shots

Joseph does not want to die. He especially does not want to die at the hands of Batman. It might seem unlikely that that will ever happen, even if Joseph is a henchman, however watching his boss whip out a gun to shoot at Robin, he knows it might only be a matter of time.
It’s kind of the unspoken rule of the goon and henchpeople underworld to not hurt the kid in a way that’s permanent. While the big villains don’t keep to that rule, Joseph had hoped that Red Hood, with all his rules surrounding children, would be different.
However, all that hope is snuffed out when the two of them are taking a smoke break and Hood spots the kid on a warehouse across from their own.
Joseph is immediately on guard as he goes to scan around for the Batman, despite knowing it’s quite useless. But Hood stiffens in anger and screams: “You!” as points at Robin.
The giggle Robin lets out is heard easily as it echoes across the yard. It sends shivers down Joseph’s spine. He knows Robin is just a kid, but all goons and henchpeople have learned to fear the sound of that laugh and it isn’t any less intimidating when he can see the kid giving them a jaunty wave.
Hood’s street instincts must be broken, though, because he doesn’t do any of the things you’re supposed to, instead scrambling for his gun. Joseph is so in shock that he doesn’t even stop him when the first few shots ring out.
Across from them, Robin back flips away from where he was just sat, thankfully not getting hit by any of the bullets.
Robin starts to run and Hood follows him with a spray of bullets, yeering loudly: “Yeah, fucker, ya better run! Ya better fuckin’ run! If ya ever pull tha’ shit again, I’m killin’ you. Killin’ you! Ya hear me?”
Joseph gathers his senses and against the better instinct of keeping his boss on his side, jumps Hood, pushing his gun away as he exclaims: “Are you crazy!?” while Robin disappears over the rooftops.
Hood pushes him off and Joseph lets him, though he likely couldn’t have stopped Hood even if he wanted to, the man is built like a brick house. “What’re you onnabout?” Hood frowns, like he truly doesn’t realize who he just shot at.
“You shootin’ at Robin,” Joseph exclaims. “Do you have any idea the kind of carnage ya would’ve brought down on us if ya’d hit ‘im?”
“What?” Hood asks, sounding truly confused and a little taken aback.
“Do you really not know? By your accent I would’ve sworn ya were from ‘round these parts,” Joseph replies, more confused than normal by his enigma of a boss.
“Well, I’ve been outta the loop for a bit,” Hood grouches. “Explain.”
“I mean, most of the big fish don’t keep to it, but it’s common knowledge to not hurt Robin too bad unless ya want the big Bat to rock your shit,” Joseph explains. “I was already in the henchin’ business when the little guy first hit the street. Course we were all wary of ‘im but what ya gonna do? Fight a little kid?”
Hood lets out a bitter snort, commenting: “Yeah, who’d do that.”
Joseph isn’t sure where that comes from and hesitates for a second, then cautiously goes on: “But the kid was good, better than any of us thought. Fuckin’ embarrassing tha’ was. So we started fighin’ back a little, ya know. Actually punching the kid here and there. It was Jimmy who first truly hurt the kid.”
“Wait, Vegetable Jim?” Hood asks.
“Yeah, isn’t a vegetable anymore. Sonnabitch’s damn lucky that Wayne Enterprises offers compensation for those hurt while working, including hench work,” Joseph laughs a little bashful and awkward. “He clipped the kid with a baseball bat, broke his arm. God, I never heard a kid wail like that,” Joseph grimaces at the memory. “What’s worse is that the kid called for his dad. His dad.”
“Wait, tell me more,” Hood asks, sounding gleeful now, which weirds Joseph out a little. “Like was it super pathetic? Did he really just break his arm, nothing more?”
“No, nothin’ more, just the arm,” Joseph answers carefully. “And ya know how kids can get, it was piercin’ and whinin’. Why’d ya wanna know? Poor fella did nothin’ to ya. You’re to young for that.”
“Nah, I know that, just gonna bully the shit outta him when I see him,” Hood grins and now Joseph is fully confused, because from what he’s heard their first baby Robin is now Nightwing in Blüdhaven and they’re not planning to expand that way. However, before he can ask, Hood says: “Sorry, continue.”
“Well, uhm, Batman came immediately. It was carnage, like I said,” Joseph replied. “Jimmy became a vegetable for a year and a half. Bats usually tries to give us injuries that’ll only last a few weeks max, so we all knew we’d fucked up with that.”
Hood is quiet at that and Joseph explains: “Jimmy was the first and one of the worst, but all the goons tha’ ended up in the hospital for longer than three months hurt a Robin. I think the worst might be those tha’ helped, uhm, that villain kill the second Robin. His organization’s still recoverin’ from tha’ one. Think it’s the closest the Bat ever got to killin’ a man.”
Joseph knows that Hood has some deep seated grudge and hatred for Joker, despite taking his old moniker. So, he isn’t sure how well it will land.
He holds his breath as he watches how his boss will react, hoping he isn’t about to get a bullet in the leg. With Hood you’re less likely to get one in the head, but he’s absolutely not above taking out your femur or kneecap and that also sucks.
However, Hood surprises him. Joseph has always guessed that Hood is younger than he pretends to be, but he now sounds like a lost kid as he asks: “Really?”
“Yeah, boss, the Bat don’t play around when it comes to his Robin,” Joseph answers, suddenly feeling like he’s talking to his own son, instead of his crime lord boss. “New kid’s lucky. I mean, he made Batman nicer, god was he fucked when the second one died. But Stan over at Mr. Freeze’s operation cracked a few of his ribs by accident a coupla weeks after the Bat took ‘im in, I hear he still eatin’ out of a tube now. Bat’s gotten more vicious.”
Hood doesn’t say anything and to avoid feeling awkward Joseph just keeps talking: “Heard through the grapevine tha’ the kid got attacked pretty bad at that fancy Tower they’ve got out there, if the guy who did tha’s capable of thought, it’ll surprise me.”
At that Hood shifts slightly and Joseph is surprised to see a bit of guilt in his stance. It’s not something they see often from their boss. Like everything this smoke break, Joseph has no clue how to react to it.
Fortunately, he doesn’t have to, because Hood speaks first. Softly he says: “Guess the kid’s lucky. Just hope the Bat’s nearby when he needs ‘im.”
“Yeah, suppose,” Joseph agrees. “Though he usually is. Never seem ‘im leave the kid alone, especially this one.”
“Good, I’d kill ‘im otherwise,” Hood grunts.
While it fits with Hood’s penchant for protecting kids, Joseph is still thrown off by it, since Hood was shooting at Robin earlier. So he gives him a look, before saying: “I mean, ‘s good tha’ he worries. Kid’s a sprout. Must be older than my boy with the way he talks, but by god is he skinny.” Joseph laughs. “It’s almost funny tha’ I worry for the kid.”
“Nah, worry’s good,” Hood surprisingly assures him. “Wouldn’t be the same if he weren’t jumpin’ ‘round, even if he’s a nuisance.”
“That why ya were shootin’ at ‘im?” Joseph can’t help but ask, even though he knows it’s stupid. It is just- he can’t help it. Not after this strange conversation.
“Kinda,” Hood shrugs. “Little shit needs to learn not to touch my shit. Fucker moved my furniture, I like where my furniture is.”
“He was in your home?” Joseph exclaims, because what the fuck? Why didn’t they hear about it. If the Bats are investigating them close enough to break into their boss’s home, they have a big problem. Very big.
“Yeah, fucked up my alarms too, even though he got a perfectly good key,” Hood mopes and Joseph’s brain screeches to a halt.
Almost as if he’s misheard he asks: “He got a key? Robin got a key? A key to your home?”
“Not voluntarily,” Hood sulks, seemingly not aware of how fucked up that is. “He’s a little stalker. Still. Stole it and copied it.”
“We need to change the locks,” Joseph says, getting up immediately to get going. “Who knows what they’re after. You- you need a protective detail. We need to up security.”
Next to him Hood startles, looking surprised. Then he laughs and waves him away: “Nah, nah, no worries, Joseph. No worries. The Bats ain’t after us.”
“They broke into your home,” Joseph feels the need to point out, because that’s a very important and very worrying detail.
“Just Robin. And just to move my shit and eat my leftovers, which is fuckin’ rude, he has his own chef at home, I have to cook all by myself and it isn’t like he chips in for the groceries,” Hood complains, while Joseph just stares at him, bug eyed.
After a beat, Joseph says: “Uhm, boss, I- uh, I hafta ask. How- how close are ya to the Bats, because that ain’t normal. No- uh no ‘fence.”
“Batman can go suck a dick and Robin needs to go back to school,” Hood scowls. “Kid shouldn’t be out here and I’m not talkin’ to the old man. But he’s a persistent little shit, I haven’t shaken him yet. Doesn’t look like I will.”
That answers absolutely nothing, but does tell Joseph that he doesn’t really want to know, because his brain is putting things together, but not things he wants to think about, because if he thinks about it, he might realize that his boss is a teen and he doesn’t think he can handle the mental weight of knowingly working for a teen.
So, Joseph follows another unspoken rule of the goon and henchpeople underworld and keeps his mouth shut when the boss is spewing nonsense.
He already has a kid to raise, he doesn’t want to think about raising his boss and by the sounds of it, the boss already got people looking after him. Even if they annoy him. Joseph is just going to be grateful about that and ignore the rest.
And pray each Sunday in the Church he doesn’t go to anymore that Hood is gonna keep missing the kid when he shoots. He hasn’t faced that sort of wrath from the Bat yet and he doesn’t plan on ever doing so.
Best to keep his head down and follow all the unspoken rules. Next time he’s smoking alone or with more people than just the boss. He has his blood pressure to think about.

Things that can be explained by POV switches
If you haven't read this analysis, you should start with that!
A list:
Crowley's hair and sideburns changing.
2. The Bentley changing. When it's Aziraphale's perspective, it's a four-door. From Crowley's it's two-door.
3. Gabriel's statue and the disappearing cross. From Gabriel's perspective, there's a cross. From Beelzebub's there is not. I wonder if it's because Gabriel sees himself as bearing some sort of burden?
4. Honolulu roast sign in Nina's shop. I wonder if that's because we switch to Nina's perspective, she knows the sign is there, she hung it. But someone notices it and someone doesn't.
5. Differing title/location cards? I bet they will give us a clue as to whose perspective we're about to see through if we pay attention to how they change.
6. The drawing of Gabriel being different when Aziraphale draws it versus when he shows it in the pub. When he draws it, we're seeing through his eyes, but when he shows it, we're seeing through Crowley's.
7. Possibly the Resurrectionist pub sign -- one of Mr. Dalrymple with a cleaver, one of him with a scalpel. Someone remembers him as a butcher, someone remembers him as a surgeon. I think we can tell who.
8. The vanishing/reappearing storefront signs in Whickber street. Someone knows exactly what shops are where, someone doesn't notice.
9. The streets and castle in Edinburgh when Aziraphale visits -- cobblestones versus paved; the castle in the background in every shot from every angle.
10. Several of the weird background noises can be explained by POV, but I don't think all of them.
11. Crowley's sunglasses changing? That one is iffy to me. Because they're silver for half the show, then black for the second half. If that were a POV switch, you'd think they'd change back and forth more often.
12. Crowley throwing books. And being nice to Jim. And wearing sleeve garters. He's telling Aziraphale on the phone what's going on, and we're seeing Aziraphale's image of it in his mind. That's almost certainly not what happened, but the gist is close enough.
13. Aziraphale's over-the-top reporter cosplay right after he is gently amused at Muriel's over-the-top constable cosplay. He's telling Crowley on the phone what's happening, and Crowley is imagining how it's going. Aziraphale's reporter persona is probably not as inconspicuous as he thinks, but it's probably not as cute and silly as Crowley imagines.
14. Gabriel not coming down the lift in the Dirty Donkey. Maggie and Nina see him first, they don't know about the lift, so they see him just walking down the street, not getting off a Heavenly elevator. He probably wasn't wandering around anywhere else -- but he does say he had to carry the box for soooo long, so maybe he was roaming around . . .
15. The high number of queer couples in the show. Both Crowley and Aziraphale are more highly tuned to humans who present as they do when in human form. It's probably not that there are more queer couples around, just that A and C take more note of them.
That's everything from my Murder Board that I think POV can explain. If anyone has other weird things that can be explained by seeing them through various character's eyes, I'd love to know!
And there is still PLENTY that can't be explained by POV. PLENTY. AND the POV changes mean we're not only seeing what they think is happening rather than what is, we're also NOT seeing anything they don't want known. We have to look where the furniture isn't.

Close Call
Tumblr media
A/N: If you like my work please comment like and reblog ! It means a lot to see interactions on my work
Chris and Y/N are going through a rough patch but then a recent close call buts things into perspectives
Chris Alonso X Reader
You and Chris had been dating for over a year.  The two of you meant through mutual friends and hit it off right away.
Chris was so sweet and kind and always made you feel good. Though the only thing is you have yet to meet her team.
Her swat family was her family and it bothered you that you never meant them yet. It sometimes made you question why. I
mean it’s not like the relationship was new. It was the opposite you guys were getting more and more serious about each other.
You really thought she was the one. The one you knew you were going to spend the rest of your life with.
But there was always a part of you that wondered if she felt the same way.
You knew that Chris had been through a lot. With her mom and other things . So you always tried to be understanding on why she might be so hesitant about everything.
If she really was the one for you then you could work with her. Is what you told yourself
But honestly you were starting to pull away from the relationship. You tried so hard but you were tired of being the only who felt like they were putting the work in.
Chris had always made some excuse or something with work. It felt like you were living with a ghost.
This morning Chris had already left for work or didn’t even come home. Sometimes it was hard to tell.
You worked in the entertainment business .Working as a director and writer and even a producer.
Wearing multiple job roles means that you would be gone from home a lot. Which also means you didn’t see Chris some days. Which worked for the two of you.
Today you had a busy day ahead of you. You were finishing the script to a big show you were going to pitch.
You also were executing a big tv network show so you had to add the final editing on the show.
So you got up for the day. Making some breakfast and then getting your self together.
You checked your phone and saw nothing from Chris. So you texted her good morning and hoped she was staying safe.
The little bubbles went off like she was going to say something but didn’t. You tried not take it personally. But lately it was just getting hard not to
You had a big office that you worked out of. It was in a nice building in the heart of LA. It had a stunning view and was something that you were really proud of.  You made your way in and got started for the day.
You had a lot to do that and didn’t waste anytime. When you got working you got stuck in your own little bubble and the world seemed to disappear for a while.
Hours has passed and you didn’t even realize it. You heard yelling and panic and  that is what broke you out of your trance. You popped your head went outside to see what was going on.
Everyone was just kind of running around like a chicken with their head cut off. You saw one of your friends from the building Kayla. So you walked over over to her to see if she knew what was going on.
“Hey what happened what’s going on” You asked
She looked at you with a confused and panicked looked on her face.
“You didn’t hear it went to everyone’s phone ” She said
“Hear what I have no clue what is going on” You said
“Someone called in a bomb threat and the  LAPD seems to think it’s real. They locked us all in there” Kayla said
“How could they do that we need to be able to leave get out” You said the anxiety was growing and the panic setting in.
“The call came in from the office and they threatened other buildings in the area so no one in and no one out. “Kayla said
“How can they just leave us in here like this” You asked
“There worried that if is real the then the person behind it could get away with it.” Kayla said.
“Wait let me see if Chris can tell us anything” You said
You pulled out your phone and called her. Of course there was no answer.
So you texted her
“Hey do you know anything going on” You sent her.
There was no reply or anything of course you figured.
Someone started yelling from downstairs so the two of you looked over the railing and saw Dan.
He worked as an editor in the building. He was always a weird guy and didn’t really talk to anyone.
He was running around around and was going off about something it was hard to make.
“Everyone is going to know my name and the true meaning” Is what he was yelling.
“Maybe we should” Kayla said
You knew she was right that you needed to get the hell out of there but there was a also a part of you that couldn’t leave.
You were like glued just watching what was going on down there.
Dan just kept going on and on that the world was watching and people were going to pay. You had no clue what he could possibly be talking about.
“Hey Let’s go right now” Kayla yelled pulling you.
The two of you made your way into your office. You shut the door behind you and sat on the couch in your office.
You weren’t really sure what to do in this scenario. If it was a bomb where do you even go to hide ?
Your anxiety was just going through the roof. You always either wrote about these scenarios or saw about the on tv. Never did you think you were going to actually live it.
Chris’s POV
We all had to head in early this morning. We were tracking down a radical group who was involved with multiple bomb threats around town.
Were all in on this case and it was taking a lot.
I left early this morning. Y/n was still sleeping when I left and I didn’t have the heart to wake them up.
Or maybe I was just avoiding them. We had been going through a lot lately.
I know it was more on me and them. They tried so hard but I always kept pulling back.
Things were getting serious between us and that scared me. I was afraid I would loose them or something would happen .
I was also afraid of driving a wedge between us. Why did I always have to complicate things.
Y/N texted me good morning and I was just starting at my phone deciding on what to say. See what I mean about complicating things
“Hey you good” Street asked me
“Yeah I’m good what’s up” I asked walking into the room where the team was.
“Were rolling out we a bomb threat called into to a building downtown LA address is 212 west hollywood drive” Hondo said.
My heart broke into a million pieces. I knew that is where Y/N was and my anxiety was at an all time high.
“Let’s roll and stay fluid” Hondo yelled.
We all pilled into black betty. I kept picking at my fingers and trying not to freak out.
“You good you seem really nervous” Jim asked.
“Yeah of course I’m all good” I said lying.
Days like today I wish i wasn’t so secretive about everything. Because I knew my team would be here for me if i only let them.
We reached the destination in no time and we all pilled out. Our target dan was inside going crazy we could hear it.
“All right me and Deac will go in front , Jim and Chris go to the side ways and Tan and Luca go up top.” Hondo said.
We all nodded and go into position. Dan was waving around a gun and there were people every where. They were all scared.
He had a backpack on and no one what was inside.
“Come on man doesn’t have to be like this” Hondo yelled trying to calm him down.
I scanned around the room hoping to see Y/N but no luck. I was partly relieved and also very nervous.
Hondo kept trying to talk him down but he kept getting more erratic. So Hodo had no choice to take him out.
Deac walked over and cleared the backpack and it was a decoy thank goddess. Me and Street them moved to clear out the upstairs.
We went in a couple of rooms and no Y/N
“Damn it” I yelled
“You good” Jim asked
“I’m sorry didn’t mean that” I said
Finally on our way to check the last room I saw Y/N and a girl crowded into each other. I ran over to them.
I opened up the door and walked over to Y/N
“Hey It’s Okay It's just me ” I said
Thank god I found the safe
Y/N’S POV
Your hands were shaking and you kept looking down at your phone and nothing. Kayla grabbed your hands and gave you a squeeze.
“Hey look at me it’s going to be okay” Kayla said
“I know I know” You said
You both jumped when you heard a loud band followed by some pops. You both kind of leaned into each other.
You heard some footsteps and your heart felt like it was going to explode. You never felt pure fear like this before. You didn’t even notice the tears were falling down your face.
The door opened up slowly. And not trying to be dramatic but your life flashed before your eyes. Thinking about anyone and everyone you ever loved.
You squeezed your eyes shut and then a small hand was placed on your back.
“Y/N Y/N hey it’s just me” You heard a familiar voice say.
You slowly opened your eyes and turned around and saw Chris standing there. You felt like a giant weight was taken off your shoulder. You got up and ran over to her.
You embraced her in a big hug and you could feel her wrap her arms around you squeezing you tight.
“Hey It’s okay It’s just me” Chris said
“Thank god what happened” You asked
“Dan Williams he was tied to a pretty radical group he’s gone now though we got him” Chris said
She placed her hands on your face and leaned in and kissed you softly.
“Whoa whoa who’s this” You heard a  man’s voice ask
“This is um Y/N my partner we been dating a year now” Chris said
“Jim street finally nice to meet the person who has been making Chris so happy” Jim said.
“I know but you know how private Chris can be” You said
“Oh trust me I know but now we know we can finally complain about Chris together” Jim said
“Trust me I have so many stories you need to hear” You said
“Nice try you two let’s go” Chris said
You all walked out and Chris held your hand squeezing it the whole time . When you walked out there was a group of people with SWAT on their uniforms.
Who looked up at you with a confused look.
Chris looked over at you and smiled.
“Come on I have some people I want you to meet” Chris said
You smiled at her and nodded.
“Hey everyone this is Y/N my partner we been dating a year now” Chris said smiling
“It’s about damn time we meet them” A tall muscular man yelled.
“Nice to meet you all finally thank you for helping us in their and you know saving our lives” You said
“Of course it’s our jobs happy to be of service” A older man with gray in his hair said.
“Hey come over here for a minute” You whispered to Chris
“Excuse us for a second” Chris said
You two walked out the way and got to a private space.
“Hey what happened to you this morning” You asked
“Sorry we had an early call time” Chris said
“Is everything okay and I don’t mean with just this morning” You asked
“I know I’m sorry I just been going through some things at work” Chris said, then she grabbed your hands.
“I promise I’m going to do better. I really want this to work. I love you I mean it was a hell of a wake up call when I heard the bomber was at your work. I panicked so hard and I felt scared and worried” Chris said
“Look I know things have kind of unstable between us but i want to change that what ever it takes” Chris said
“I love you to when I was in that room I thought of you not being able to see you again and it killed me I just want us to go back like when we first meant” You said.
Chris leaned in and kissed you. And you kissed her back and it was slow and sweet.
When the kiss broke Chris looked at you and smiled
“Come on there are some people who you need to be properly introduced to” Chris said
She grabbed your hand and walked you over to the team.
“Hey so this is Hondo , Deacon, Tan and Luca and you already meant Street” Chris said
“Nice finally properly meeting you all” You said
“You to wish it was under different circumstances though” Luca said.
“Maybe we all can go out and grab a drink tonight I have so many stories to tell” You said
“Were in sounds amazing” Hondo said.
Suddenly over the walkie they got a call they had to clear out. Chris grabbed you and gave you a kiss and then ran off.
When you woke up this morning you were not expecting this turn of events. But you were glad it ended the way it did.
Things were going to change overnight but you were glad it was headed in that direction. She was the one you were meant to be with.

marys song - jack hughes
in which, you had always loved the boy next door.
Tumblr media
your parents had been best friends with ellen and jim hughes long before you were ever born. so, it was no surprise that you had grown up alongside the hughes boys.
quinn was like an older brother you never had. he was the one you would run to when luke or jack were being too mean or when you had fallen off your scooter trying to beat luke in a race. he always took your side, even when you were in the wrong.
you and luke had been the closest growing up, since you two were the same age. he was your best friend. you helped him get girls and he scared away all the guys that were ever interested in you. you two stayed up all night, communicating through your bedroom windows. he was your partner in crime.
and jack? jack and you had always had a strange relationship. you had realised you liked him when you were six and he was hanging out with another girl that lived on the same street at you. her name was sally and you hated her guts from the second you saw jack tie her shoe lace. seriously, who even wore laces back then? it was all about the velcro.
age seven
you had found jack sulking in his backyard, kicking the grass with his shoed foot. you didn't know why he was upset, you were simply looking for luke.
"what's wrong with you?" you had asked him, your arms crossed and head turned up. you were quite angry with him that day, you had seen him kiss sally on the cheek during a game of truth and dare that you weren't allowed to play in earlier that week.
"no one here to play with me." he sulked, once again taking his anger out on a patch of grass. "where is everyone?" you had responded, slowly taking a seat next to him on the grass field. "luke got hockey and quinn at the movies with his friends, he said i wasn't allowed t come."
"why didn't you ask me to play?" you had asked the boy, who barely shot you a glance before shrugging his shoulders. "yous been moody all week."
you glared at the boy, "i'm not moody, maybe you just annoying."
"i'm not annoying, you're annoying!" he shot back, standing up from the grass and over you. you stood up just as quick, crossing your arms and standing on your tippy toes to seem taller than him. "you're always annoying me, jack!" you shouted.
jack rolled his eyes, "you should go home 'fore i beat you up."
jack would never have touched you, he was always threatening everyone with the same stuff. but you took it to heart anyways, tears filling your eyes. "i don't like you anymore, jack."
and with that, you were off back to your own home.
jim had watched the whole interaction with a small smile, he had an ongoing bet with your own father that you and jack were gonna end up together. it was all for laughs, something to bring up every christmas dinner.
little did he know.
age sixteen
you were practically bubbling with anticipation as you bounded down the stairs of your summer house, phone in hand with the text message from luke saying they had arrived on the screen.
you had seen luke all year, of course. but you hadn't seen quinn or jack since christmas last year due to hockey. you also knew that they had both brought some friends they had met through hockey, and had always had a thing for hockey players.
"bye mom! bye dad!" you yelled as you slammed the front door behind you and bounced over to the hughes household. luke had told you to just walk in, like you weren't already planning on it.
the hughes house had always been significantly louder than your own, you being an only child and there being three of them. but the noise that greeted you when you walked in was other worldly.
screams were heard, along with heavy footsteps as people ran around. you smiled to yourself as you crossed the barrier into the living room.
luke had an unfamiliar boy on top of him, holding a pillow over his head. jack laughed as he held back quinn, who was attempting to help luke. and two more unfamiliar boys yelled at the tv screen as they played some sort of hockey based video game.
"jesus, what in a warzone is going on here?" you laughed at the sight, and six pairs of heads snapped towards you. the boy on top of luke fell off him, as luke bounded to his feet and marched over to you.
"come on, holly. we're leaving these psychos to their own devices." luke stated as he grabbed your hand and attempted to drag you off to his room. but you stood your ground, ripping your hand from his before bounding over to quinn.
"quinny!" you exclaimed before enveloping him into a hug. the boy groaned at the sudden impact, before mumbling a small "hello bug."
as you released him, you turned to jack. the boy smiled at you and time seemed to stop. you hated how all this time and distance would never put your mind at ease when it came to jack hughes.
he opened his mouth to say something before the boy who was previously suffocating your best friend with a pillow intercepted him. "trevor. trevor zegras. it's lovely to meet you. have you seen the house? let me give you a tour." you had practically grown up in the hughes summer house, but you decided to not tell the excited boy that as you allowed him to grab your hand and guide you upstairs.
you turned back to look at jack, who already seemed to be staring at you. you offered him a shy wave and smile before turning back around.
no one seemed to realise how jack's eyes lingered on your retreating figure, no one except quinn who smirked at the sight.
he so couldn't wait to tell jim.
age twenty one
you mumbled small apologies as you pushed passed people in order to get to the authorised portion of the prudential centre. jack had just won his game with an overtime shot, and you were bubbling with excitement for him.
finally finding where you were supposed to be, you quickly flashed your pass before being let through by security. you passed many devils players that you had met over the passed year or two, offering them small congratulations.
you found luke before jack, crushing the taller boy into a hug before shaking his shoulders aggressively. "you were so good, lukey!"
luke simply shook your hands off him, his face stuck in a permanent fixture of smiles, before telling you he'd meet you at the car. you nodded your head before walking off, eyes searching for the middle hughes child.
when you spotted him, he was just wrapping up a conversation with his captain, nico.
"jack!" you exclaimed to get his attention, he seemed to look around aimlessly for a few moments before his eyes landed on you, a large smile overtaking his features as he began his trek in your direction.
upon reaching you, he wrapped his arms around your waist, "hey baby."
you smiled as you wrapped your own arms around his neck, offering him a kiss as a congratulations. his lips chased yours, but you were quick to pull away. laughing at his pout, "i'm proud of you."
the boy simply hummed before reconnecting his lips to yours. you pulled away again, "and i love you."
"i love you too." he smiled before reconnecting his lips to yours once more, groaning when you pulled away again. "and luke's waiting for us by the car."
and with that, you were dragging a sulking jack through the prudential centre.

“Hey, sleepyhead, you’re not on vacation anymore. We gotta get up.”
You sigh and roll closer to Deacon as you argue, “Maternity leave is not vacation. And I’ll remind you that it’s your fault.”
Deacon chuckles as he pushes your hair out of your face and kisses your forehead. “Your brother will kill me if you don’t come in with me.”
“You can take Jim,” you murmur as you press your face against Deacon’s chest. “Do I really have to get up right now?”
“Five minutes,” Deacon answers. “Or I’m pulling you out of bed.”
“I’m sure that was supposed to be a threat, but it didn’t sound like one.”
The baby monitor beside your bed crackles before you hear your family’s newest addition whine. Deacon pats your hip and reminds you to get up as he goes to check on his youngest child. You stand, too, and answer your phone when it rings.
“Good morning,” you greet as you walk to the bathroom to get ready. “And before you ask, yes, I’m up.”
“Whoa, take it easy. I’m just excited to have you back at work,” your brother Street replies. “You plan on being this grumpy all day?”
You chuckle at Street and smile when you hear Deacon having a one-sided conversation.
“Are you nervous?” Street asks.
“No, I’m actually really excited. I’ve loved being home with the kids, but I miss it.”
“You mean you miss me.”
“You’ve been here every single day, Jim. I wish I could miss you, but you don’t let me.”
“You love me.”
“Luckily for you,” you tease.
“How’s Deac? Nervous for you?”
You glance toward the nursery and lower your voice to say, “If he is, he isn’t showing it.”
Street hums before he says, “I’ll see you at HQ. Love you.”
“I love you, too. See you in a bit.”
You get ready quickly, growing more excited to get back to work. You love your family, but S.W.A.T. has been part of your life for a long time, and you missed it during maternity leave. While you anticipate what your first day may be like, Deacon lets your sitter into the house. When it’s time to leave, Deacon takes your hand and walks you to the car, promising to be by your side at work just as he is at home.
✯✯✯✯✯
“There they are!” Hondo yells when you and Deacon walk into S.W.A.T. HQ.
“So glad to see you,” Luca says. He smiles, hugs you, and whispers, “You look amazing.”
“Thanks, Luca,” you respond. “Thank you, all of you, for everything over the past few months.”
“She’s mostly talking to me,” Street interjects.
“You didn’t do it alone, Street,” Deacon argues.
“Okay,” you call, raising your hands. “Thank you Deacon and Street for single-handedly getting me physically ready to come back to work.”
Street smiles as he says, “You’re welcome.”
“Not like I’m the one who had a baby and then beat my PFQ records or anything.”
“No way!” Luca exclaims. “New records?”
“Shaved five seconds off my run time and got another pull-up. That obstacle course seemed pretty easy after dealing with four kids, too,” you answer.
“Congratulations.”
Hondo is smiling but looking at you a bit too intently.
“What?” you ask.
“I’m just wondering if we should apologize in advance,” he explains. “We’re going to be more protective than ever.”
“More than these two?” you ask as you point at Deacon and Street.
“Well, there’s more of us now. We just need to make sure you go home to all those babies every night.”
“I appreciate it, Hondo. And, trust me, I remember last time, so I’m prepared for the helicoptering.”
“20-David!” Hicks yells. “50 squad needs backup at a barricade in Norwalk.”
“Let’s roll!” Hondo adds.
Hicks smiles when he sees you, and when Street and Deacon arrange themselves on either side of you, he shakes his head. Whatever level of protectiveness you expect is underestimating how much your team cares about you.
✯✯✯✯✯
“Rocker said they were called to a noise disturbance after the suspect barricaded himself in the house and opened fire on the responding patrol officers. Apparently he winged one of them, and they can’t track him in the house,” Hondo explains.
“What’s the plan?” Luca asks from Black Betty’s driver seat.
“50-David tried breaching, but the house has reinforced steel beams, and the pulls didn’t work. They suspect that he has more weaponry, so they don’t want to get too close.”
“What’s behind the house?” you ask.
“Uh, a tiny yard that backs up to an alley,” Street answers, looking at a satellite view of the area. "It has an Abingdon Street address, but there’s an alley between it and the house it backs to on Excelsior Drive.”
“Black Betty can’t pull from an alley, but we can hop a fence,” you suggest.
Hondo nods, flipping the map to find an approach route.
“Three side on the back… If we approach on foot from the other side of the alley, Grayland Avenue, he shouldn’t see us coming,” he says. “Let’s do it. Luca, you’re with me, we’ll join Rocker at Elaine and Abingdon. Street, you and Deacon lead the approach from the back.”
You nod when Hondo tells you to go with Deacon and Street. When Luca turns on to Grayland, you jump out of the back of Black Betty and move down the alley.
“Go inside,” you whisper to a child playing in an unfenced backyard.
Deacon raises a hand and signals for you to stop. Street stops directly to your left and waits for more information from Deacon.
“This is 30-David, I have visual of the house from the back alley. There’s a camera on the opposite corner from my location. Do we know if his surveillance works?” Deacon radios.
“One second, 30-David,” a tech back at HQ replies. “I’ll check.”
“This is a boring story,” Street whispers. “Your first call is a noise complaint gone wrong.”
“The automatic weapon adds a bit of suspense,” you reply with a smile.
“30-David, the camera is a fake. Clear to continue,” the tech alerts.
Deacon gestures for you to follow him in a single-file formation, and you end up in the middle. As you approach the fence, Deacon looks through the boards to see the back of the house and shakes his head.
“The windows are blacked out on this side, too. Except for one in the corner.”
“Then that’s the one we need,” Street replies.
Deacon jumps the fence and raises his weapon to cover the backyard while you and Street join him. He extends an arm toward you quickly when you land but moves it back when you nod.
“30-David, approaching the southeast window,” Deacon radios.
Before you take a step, the window slides open, and the barrel of an automatic rifle comes out.
“Go, go, go!” Deacon yells, shooting a nonlethal round into the window.
The suspect inside opens fire as the beanbag enters; the firing is unplanned and erratic. You duck toward the ground and follow Deacon toward the opposite side of the house to exfil.
“Deac, where are those shots coming from?” Hondo demands.
“Southeast window!” Deacon answers. “We’re moving to the west side.”
“Deac!” you call, watching as a matching window on the west side comes into view.
“Hondo, we’re stuck in a corner,” Street says. “Now would be a great time to say you have a plan!”
“We’re working on something, hold tight.”
“Kind of hard to do with someone shooting at us,” you mutter.
“Where’d he go?” Street asks.
“Both windows are closed now,” Deacon answers. “Maybe he saw the cops out front.”
You shake your head and point to a window further up. It’s blacked out but slightly ajar, so you suspect he’s still on this side of the house.
“Hondo,” Deacon radios. “Get a plan.”
“We’re trying, Deac,” Hondo answers.
“Try faster,” you add.
✯✯✯✯✯
“Luca, how would you feel about running Black Betty into the front of the house?” Hondo asks.
“What? Why?” Luca asks.
“They’re trapped at one of the back corners. Can’t get out without taking more fire,” Hondo says quietly, not wanting to concern the other police officers waiting nearby.
Deacon radios about getting a plan before Luca can answer. Hondo looks toward the house and doesn’t have time to reply to you before the suspect opens fire again.
The shots are concentrated at the back of the house, and Hondo rushes toward the front door and kicks it in while the shots are still ringing through the air. He takes careful turns as he moves toward the back corner. When the suspect comes into view, Hondo fires a beanbag round into his leg, knocking him to the ground.
“You’re under arrest,” Hondo says, kneeling beside the man as he handcuffs him.
“Deac, Street, someone give me an update!” Luca radios, moving toward the gate entrance at the side of the house.
“Suspect in custody,” Hondo alerts. “Deacon!”
✯✯✯✯✯
When the bullets begin ripping through the stucco on the exterior of the house, you, Deacon, and Street fall to the ground and cover your heads. Your adrenaline spikes as the shots continue. When they stop abruptly, you wait a moment before raising your head. The shots were close, so your ears ring as you move to your hands and knees.
“You okay?” Street asks though it’s muffled.
Luca asks something through the radio, but you can’t tell what he’s saying either. You drop your head and notice a growing puddle of blood underneath you. When you try to lift a hand to find the source, everything goes dark as you fall onto the concrete.
✯✯✯✯✯
Street yells your name when you tip forward, drawing Deacon’s attention.
“No, no, no,” Deacon repeats as he carefully turns you onto your back.
They see the blood pooling under you and have to fight not to panic. Deacon finds the hole in your vest and pulls his hand back up, swallowing as he sees your blood covering his hand. He moves out from under you to put pressure on the wound.
“Take her vest off and then go get the med bag from Betty,” Deacon tells Street.
Your brother freezes, and Deacon repeats himself. Street nods before he carefully removes your bulletproof vest, exhaling sharply at the sigh of the clean hole through the Kevlar. Deacon lifts you gently so Street can pull the vest from behind your back and checks for an exit wound, but as he suspected, there isn’t one.
“Med bag,” Deacon reminds Street.
As Street stands, Deacon realizes he can’t feel your heartbeat below his hands anymore. He moves one hand up to your neck, but as he leaves stains on your skin, he can’t find any sign of a heartbeat.
“Street!” he yells.
At Deacon’s pained yell, Street immediately turns back and rushes to your side.
“Keep pressure on this,” Deacon demands.
Street kneels over your thighs and presses both hands against your side as Deacon moves forward. It isn’t until Deacon begins chest compressions that Street realizes you’re gone.
“Tell… Hondo,” Deacon grunts between compressions.
“Hondo,” Street radios. “We need an R/A.”
“What happened, kid? We can’t get to the backyard from the front or through the house, so we’re coming around the back. You and Deac stopped respo- who’s hit?” Hondo interrupts himself when he realizes that he didn’t get a response because someone couldn’t respond.
Street says your name as he watches Deacon begin mouth to mouth.
“Hondo, get somebody to pass the med bag over the west fence,” Street adds.
Deacon hears Hondo yelling orders in the front yard, but his complete attention is on you. He tells Street to apply more pressure to stop the bleeding, and he begins another round of chest compressions. When he breathes into your mouth this time, you cough before gasping.
“Street!” Luca yells from the other side of the fence. “I’ve got the med bag.”
Deacon stands and pulls himself onto the top of the fence, taking it from Luca. When Luca sees the blood covering Deacon’s hands and smeared across his chest, he fears the worst.
“Pull this fence down if you have to, Luca. We have to get her out of here right now,” Deacon explains before jumping back down to help you. “Street, we’re packing the wound. She’s losing too much blood.”
“Deac,” you whimper.
“I got you, sweetheart. We’re not leaving you,” he promises.
Deacon nods at Street, and Street trades places with him. You stretch your hand out toward Street, and he takes your hand in his. When you notice that his hand is covered in your blood, you whisper a thank you for all they are doing to save you.
“I can’t breathe,” you pant.
Deacon looks up from your side and watches you take short, fast breaths. He asks Street to check your heart rate, and Street gives him an elevated number.
“Luca!” Deacon yells.
“Yeah, Deac?” Luca replies.
“Where’s the ambulance?”
“A minute out.”
Deacon licks his lips and turns back to packing your wound.
“Elevate her legs, Street. Twelve inches off the ground,” Deacon says. “Sweetheart, this is going to hurt. I’m sorry.”
You release a muffled scream as Deacon wraps a bandage around your torso and pulls it tightly to keep pressure on the wound. Sirens sound as the ambulance approaches, but there is no way to get you out of the backyard safely.
“Deac,” Hondo says, raising himself over the fence. He stops for a moment when he sees you, and Street and Deacon are covered in your blood, which doesn’t help his concern any. “We’re pulling the fence down right now.”
“Thanks, Hondo,” Deacon replies.
Deacon situates himself between you and the fence and keeps a hand pressed to your pulse point. When your elevated heart rate suddenly plummets, Deacon says your name. You don’t reply, and Deacon apologizes before he puts more pressure on the wound. The resulting adrenaline spike brings you back, and Deacon closes his eyes when you yell in pain. The fence comes down harshly and loudly, but you don’t react to any of it.
“Oh, no,” Luca mumbles when he sees you, Deacon, and Street.
“What’ve we got here?” the first EMT asks as he runs over the destroyed fence.
“GSW to the lower right abdomen and possible hemorrhagic shock.” Deacon lowers his voice to add, “Her heart stopped twice already and she’s still losing blood.”
“Know her blood type?”
Deacon nods and tells him your blood type. Two more EMTs join the first with a gurney, and Deacon has to pull Street away so they can move you onto it.
“Go with her,” Hondo says. “We’ll be by later.”
Deacon and Street climb into the ambulance and sit beside you. The EMTs work quickly, leaving Deacon’s makeshift tourniquet in place.
“Heart rate and BP are plummeting,” one of the EMTs alerts.
Deacon and Street can only watch, helpless, as the EMTs prepare the equipment to shock your heart back into a normal rhythm.
“Is she going to make it?” Street whispers.
“I- she’s a fighter, but I really don’t know, Street,” Deacon answers honestly.
✯✯✯✯✯
Hondo and Luca are waiting impatiently at S.W.A.T. HQ when Deacon finally calls.
“Deac, tell me you have good news,” Hondo answers.
“She- she’s in emergency surgery and they had some trouble finding all of the bullet fragments. Doc said she should be out in about twenty minutes, though, and her heart rate has been stable,” Deacon replies.
“Has been stable?” Luca repeats. “Was it not before?”
“Her heart stopped once in the backyard, and nearly stopped twice more while I was with her. Apparently there were a few more close calls when they first started the surgery.”
“Do they know if she’ll recover?” Hondo asks.
“They don’t know anything for sure. Just, uh, if you want to come down now, you can.”
“We’ll be there, Deac,” Luca replies. “Need anything?”
“No. Thanks, though, for everything.”
✯✯✯✯✯
As Deacon ends the call with Hondo, he gets another call from Hicks.
“Commander,” Deacon greets, hoping he won’t have to leave you.
“Deacon, I just wanted to tell you that I’ve taken 20-David off call, so you’re all free to stay with her unless there’s some kind of emergency,” Hicks says.
“I appreciate that, sir.”
“Just make sure she’s alright, Deac.”
A few minutes later, Hondo and Luca rush into the waiting room. Street and Deacon have changed out of the blood-soaked clothes from earlier and removed your blood from their skin, but they can still feel it.
“Deac,” Hondo sighs as he pulls him into a quick hug. “I’m so sorry.”
“Tell me what you need,” Luca offers.
“I already called our sitter, and she’s going to stay the night,” Deacon replies. “I don’t know what else I need to do.”
“You need to be here for her,” Hondo answers.
Luca moves to Street’s side to check on him as Deacon and Hondo sit down. Deacon recounts what happened, how one of the windows was open before the shots came through the wall.
Nearly an hour later, the doctor finally returns and says your name. Every waiting member of 20-David stands, eager to hear how you are.
“How is she?” Deacon asks.
“She is stable and in a room. She owes her life to your team, gentlemen. The first aid you performed and the speed with which you got her here is the only reason she’s still alive,” the doctor answers. “I can only let family come back at the moment, but I’ll ensure she knows you’re all here for her.”
Deacon and Street follow him into your room, and they’re both surprised to see you are conscious. You smile at them when they enter, and they rush to either side of your bed to hug you.
“The bullet damaged an artery in her torso, which we’ve repaired, and there was no other internal damage,” the doctor adds. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
“Where are the kids?” you ask Deacon. “The sitter-“
“Is staying the night. I called a while ago and told her what happened, and she was happy to stay with them,” Deacon assures you.
“And I can go stay with them after, for as long as you need,” Street offers.
You can tell that they’re upset, but you are too. Lying in your own blood like that and not knowing if you’d get to see your babies again was terrifying, yet there are only two things you want to do: hug your kids and go back to work.
“How long do you think I’ll be benched?” you ask.
“That’s what you’re worried about?” Street responds as he rolls his eyes. “I’m considering quitting and you’re ready to go back?”
“Are you really?”
“I don’t know,” he admits while taking your offered hand. “That was terrifying, and I don’t want to think about losing anyone else.”
“Jim, you saved my life. And I will never leave you, okay?”
Street nods, and you squeeze his hand to remind him that you’re still beside him.
“Can I get some comfort now? Because I was covered in your blood earlier and just want a hug,” Deacon interjects.
You turn toward him and raise your other arm. Deacon hugs you, mindful of your side, and sighs against your neck.
“I love you,” Deacon whispers.
“I love you,” you reply. “And thanks for saving my life.”
“I didn’t-“
“I remember more than you think,” you argue with a smile. “Hey, is everyone here?”
“We’re family and you want Hondo and Luca?” Street asks obnoxiously.
You nod, and Street sighs as he pulls his hand away to get them for you.
“I need to hug our kids as soon as possible,” you tell Deacon.
Deacon smiles as he moves closer to you. “Soon,” he promises.
“Now that just ain’t fair,” Hondo says as he walks inside. “You still look like that after everything you’ve been through?”
“Don’t flirt with my wife, Hondo,” Deacon replies jokingly.
“I don’t know, I kind of like the attention,” you add. “Maybe we should do this more often.”
“Don’t ever say that again,” Luca demands as he lays a kind hand on your shoulder. “Glad you’re feeling good enough to make fun of us and our worry though.”
“Speaking of worry,” Hondo begins. “Street tells us you want to come back to work?”
You nod, and Hondo continues, “Then we will be with you through it all. Recovery, training, we got your back.”
“Thank you,” you say quietly. “Seriously. I know I’ve been joking, mostly to distract myself, but I wouldn’t even be here without all of you, and I can’t thank you enough for that. My- our kids wouldn’t have me anymore, and there’s nothing I can say to make you understand what all of you mean to me and how much I appreciate what you did for me today – and do for me every day.”
“Did your family grow while I was away?” the doctor asks as he returns.
“No, it’s always been this big,” you reply. “Ask them, they love me.”
The guys nod, and the doctor shakes his head before telling you and your visitors you should be healthy again in just a few weeks. Then he says that visiting hours are over and politely asks everyone to leave.
“I’m her husband,” Deacon offers.
“Oh, my apologies. You’re free to stay for the night,” the doctor replies.
“I’m her brother,” Street adds.
“Would you like me to gather cots for everyone, ma’am?”
“We’re heading out,” Hondo says with a chuckle. “We’ll be back by in the morning. Have a good night and call if you need anything.”
“Seriously,” Luca adds. “I live closer than Hondo, so call me first, though.”
Hondo and Luca argue as they leave, and you smile. The doctor talks for a while, but you focus on Deacon’s hand in yours. He cleaned his ring at some point because it is no longer covered in your blood. Your wedding ring is at home, but the silicone ring you wear at work was taken off when you got to the hospital. As you slide Deacon’s wedding ring off, he glances at you but continues listening to the doctor. With Deacon’s ring on your finger, you feel more complete, even if you are in pain and miss your kids.
“I’m going to go find some food,” Street says after the doctor leaves. “You want anything?”
You smile, and Street sighs as he agrees to find your favorite food.
“You’re the best brother ever!” you call after him. “I love you!”
“Luckily for you I love you too,” he replies with a wide smile.
When it’s only you and Deacon, you slide over and pat the bed, asking him to join you. He smiles at the sight of his ring on your finger as he sits, letting you lean against his side.
“I’m sorry for scaring you,” you whisper. “But I’m glad you were with me.”
“I am too,” Deacon replies. “But when you’re released, we’re going home and sitting with all of the kids for as long as possible.”
“That sounds perfect. I love you, Deacon, and you’re the best thing that has ever happened to me.”
“I love you,” Deacon replies, kissing your cheek.
Street returns faster than expected, and when he pushes the door open and says, “I can’t believe I said your first day back was going to be boring,” you can’t help but laugh, even though it hurts your side.
You are alive because of your family, both your real family and your work family, though those lines blur more each day. There is nothing you wouldn’t do for all of them, and you know the opposite is true; they will be with you through everything, just as they promised. While you sit between your husband and brother, you know that you owe more than your heartbeat to your family.

Lynching victim Rubin Stacy’s story being told by his family in film screening at NSU
Tumblr media
Anne Naves knew something bad had happened to her uncle when her male relatives came home from fishing, each wearing a pall of silence. Dad wasn’t cracking jokes like usual. Grandfather looked grave. And her uncle, Rubin Stacy, hadn’t come back. The next day, someone from the funeral home said a body had been dropped off.
Naves, 8 years old at the time, only discovered the full gruesome truth about her uncle years later. On July 19, 1935, acting on an unproven accusation from a white woman, a masked lynch mob strung up Stacy under a Fort Lauderdale tree, hanged him and shot him 17 times as spectators gawked and children laughed.
The brutality and silence of Stacy’s lynching is revisited in the new documentary, “Rubin,” which will screen on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Nova Southeastern University. In the hourlong film, the farmhand’s death is recounted through the eyes of his surviving descendants, but mainly through Naves, who was the last living eyewitness to the trauma — and to the secrecy — that followed.
The film, the first to be made by relatives of Stacy’s family, also chronicles the history of lynchings in America, used as a tool of punishment and to foster silence.
“I think (my family) knew that, without telling us (kids) what really happened, they would save us a lot of trauma,” Naves says in the documentary. “The neighbors and our church members respected our silence, too, because they knew that if it could happen to our family, it could happen to theirs.”
For “Rubin” director Tenille Brown, who is a cousin of Rubin Stacy, the film has in recent weeks also morphed into something else: a posthumous tribute to Naves. After filming her interviews for the documentary, she died on Sept. 18 at age 96, leaving behind a strong legacy: She was a Broward County educator for 25 years, teaching at Pines Middle and other schools.
“The biggest piece of the film was Anne,” Brown says in an interview with the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “Without her, there’s no story. She’s the driving force. She was ready to talk. She told me to record her. She really pushed me when I didn’t feel confident and said, ‘Record me anyway. Just go.’ ”
The rest of America witnessed the cruelty of Stacy’s lynching long before Naves did. A series of photos immortalize the moment when a white crowd gathered around Stacy’s body hanging from a tree. These images ran in newspapers nationwide, were published by the NAACP, Life magazine and National Geographic, and are now archived in the Library of Congress.
It was a tale of Jim Crow-era racism that Fort Lauderdale would’ve rather forgotten — the brother of a corrupt Broward County sheriff participated in the lynching — but city officials have made strides in recent years to acknowledge the tragedy by placing memorial markers around Fort Lauderdale. One is on Davie Boulevard and Southwest 31st Avenue, also known as Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, near where Stacy took his last breath. There’s another on the 800 block of Northwest Second Street, where he lived, and a third at Woodlawn Cemetery, his final resting place. In February 2022, a section of Davie Boulevard was renamed Rubin Stacy Memorial Boulevard.
“I’m glad they acknowledged it,” says Brown, of Pompano Beach. “These stories make some people in the state uncomfortable, but if they are based on fact, we need to tell the truth. You can’t turn your head. These are things you can’t ignore.”
For Brown, it was these memorials — and Naves’ willingness to break her silence — that motivated her to reconstruct Stacy’s story. To do so, she also interviewed Ken Cutler, Parkland commissioner and historian, and Tameka Bradley Hobbs, library regional manager of Fort Lauderdale’s African American Research Library and Cultural Center.
“My family didn’t want to talk about it out of fear for years,” Brown says. “There was shame. There’s an element of hurt, and you can hear that emotion in Anne’s voice. Now it feels freeing. This is a story that was suppressed for years and by sharing it, this is how we overcome.”
Michael Anderson, a producer for “Rubin,” says the film also tackles what too many school textbooks don’t stress enough: the history of Black lynchings.
“For Black youth to know their stories, they have to know the history of lynchings,” Anderson says. “They still don’t know how lynchings were used as a weapon to keep a community quiet. That’s exactly what it did to Rubin Stacy’s family.”
