08 MEDIA DIARY: Dan & Phil & Privacy

HELLO INTERNET!!!!!!!! If you didn't know me in 2012-2017, you might not know about my little fixation on these two British men on YouTube. Meet Dan Howell and Phil Lester. They started out as teenagers making silly videos in their bedrooms. Dan inspired by and a fan of Phil, made his own content and - come 2009, ended up meeting Phil.

(Moral of the story: Parasocial relationships work! Sometimes!)

Chaos ensues, they bond for life.

Now you can never really think of one without the other.

Without getting too much into it, yes. You know the internet. There was HEAVY speculation on their relationship and sexuality. I never got into it myself, but it was a huge part of the "phan"dom in the early days. Inescapable. Them openly denying that they were gay while their fanbase wrote insane erotic fanfiction (think: hamsters, peeling of skin), made "evidence" edits, and leaked footage from their private lives - It was a wild ride, and dare I say invasive at times. They did come out as queer at the end of June 2019! In Dan's 45-minute-long video titled "Basically I'm Gay", we get to know a lot of his personal battle with his sexuality, yet while still barely scratching the surface of it all.

"Obviously we were more than friends, but it was more than just romantic. This is someone that genuinely liked me. I trusted them. And for the first time since I was a tiny child, I actually felt safe. And the relationship we formed at that point was something that I needed in my life. We are real best friends, companions through life, like actual soulmates." is what Dan says about Phil, choosing not to elaborate further. He sets a boundary with his audience, stating that he wants to keep his personal life private (and so does Phil).

I respect that dearly, and I am glad that the fanbase has matured a bit more over the years to abide by that boundary (at least from what I've gathered. I hope... Looking up their names seems to say otherwise). Learning what to keep private and what to turn into content is a fascinating practice. Especially when you're a celebrity whose entire brand revolves around your person, stories, and hijinks. There will always be people who you can't control - those who view you as a commodity, a story to unpack and watch unfold. I feel like none of us are built to be seen by this many people at once. On a personal account, everytime I've encountered a brush of virality I go a bit cuckoo and I find myself withdrawing into a shell. It really does take a certain strength/dissociation to be perceived by so many.

Anyways, they uploaded a video on their shared gaming channel recently! "A Fan Perfectly Recreated Our House in Roblox". Self-explanatory, and also not clickbait! It was fun seeing their old apartment perfectly recreated as they occasionally showed clips of videos, reminiscing about their old content.

...Pretty jarring to see their real street views outside their windows, though! (O_o) ( 8:38 ) A bit funny, but also not funny at all. I giggled, had a bit of a haha hehe, but I also worried. There are definitely people out there who stalk creators by going to places they frequent, or even their own homes just from clues online.

Everyone is a content creator to some extent, so we need to be mindful! Digital footprint, guys! Moral of the story is shut your blinds and throw away your phones and delete yourself off the face of the internet and change your name and live off the grid and. I'm kidding... I'm glad you're being productive. I have tried and have failed many times. I am horrible with time management and I procrastinate all the time. I'm still hopeful that I will start picking up better habits after my long awaited vacation from working a new job for months. Anyway, to the anons who are upset with Do's solo schedule not getting posted on NCT account. I'm sorry but I think it's silly. First off, I have a friend who does endorsement deals/content creator on social media. She said you can start with as small as 1,000 followers. You just reach out to the brands you want to do PR for or brands will reach out to you. You basically sign a deal/contract and go from there. My friend says with content she post on instagram and Tik Tok within a week she makes about $400US, (imagine how much money D&G gets from Do's solo stans just clicking on their site or however it works). Also, she's doing this all herself might I add, no one is helping her with her content or posting it for her. Therefore, when NCT account does not post anything about Do's solo schedule I don't think it's a big deal, because Do can post about it himself. He can basically promote himself about his solo projects to his millions of followers on social media (which he does do). Also, when you think about it he has fan accounts that will let his fans know what he is up to, so I don't think it's that big of an issue not getting a post on NCT account. If you want to argue about exposure to his non solo stans, well there are going to be articles with him in the headline with other big name stars for clickbait, so I wouldn't worry too much about not getting exposure. Also, Huh-nim does bring up a good point about the actual brand wanting the exposure for themselves and not SM. SM is basically a third party between Do and D&G. I also just want to add when asking a third party to do the bare minimum it's basically asking "If possible can you post this on social media", (emphasis on if possible, meaning if it can be done). If the third party didn't post about it, well there are other people involved that can do it too. It's really not SM's fault, because they are 1 of 3 (or more) people involved. That's just my whole two cents on this.

Anyway, Huh-nim I have a question. How do you deal with Do's idol image? I love Do's real image. The sass, his kindness, his leadership, his drive, the model son, being the prefect BF and being an overachiever. I would say Do for me is a bias, but lately I am losing interest (possibly getting bored, not sure if this is the proper wording). I think it's because he hasn't done anything new-new. All his OST sound the same (most OST do though), though I do love a good ballad song. He hasn't acted in a different genre or hasn't been in a musical. His covers are good and hearing the improvement is great, but I'm probably being selfish and just want something different vocally and musically. In other words I feel like Do hasn't done something where he is actually challenging himself (MITH was probably most challenging thing he has done last). Also, not including BA for D&G. I am not into brand name fashion, so that does nothing for me. For instance, Jae acted in one romance drama and he said I am going for different types of acting. Which I think is cool, because it shows that he doesn't want to be stuck in a mold. I also think what helps with Jae is he will disappear for a good while and comeback. I always see his fans get excited over the smallest things with him (me included 🫣). Jae could release more music/covers, but that's for a different discussion. However, with Do he's very active, like he is everywhere lol but I think he really sticks too much to his idol mold. He hardly breaks away from it. All in all, I guess I'm asking is how do you always seem to find something that always amazes you about Do when in my mind he hasn't really done anything different... I could also probably be not a good fan, because what interest the majority never interest me. Sorry if my question is not clear. Until next time huh-nim!

I don't stan the idol Doyoung, I stan Kim Dongyoung who makes it in the industry. Therefore more things are of interest to me than just songs. Afterall, if I need a different genre for a change, I can just remember another artist and play his songs (Stromae, Miku, Gotye, Seal, BuckTick (Atsushi), even Eminem, heh).

Doyoung wants to be a singer, to sing. Everything else he does is to secure the fulfillment of this dream. Right now he is doing two things: 1) looks for more opportunities to sing live (K909, LeeMujin, the upcoming D&G thing) and 2) practices arrangement and producing (28 Reasons, Gold Dust, DJJ). As a solo singer he is at the stage of attempting to go international: the OST in Japanese, the collab with a renown Western composer, the upcoming show in Italy. It is him breaking out of his mold. (Originally he was very "I listen only to Korean songs, I need to understand lyrics to care").

As for genres and trying to sing differently: the Japanese song cover, the duet with a traditional Korean singer (which I really love), the rock song covers. He had to learn new techniques to sing in the musical as well. I think you underestimate his versatility as a vocalist, Doyoung makes it look easy.

Acting. He acted twice, and the second role was more demanding than the first one. The bullying scene. You are a bit too early to say he keeps to a mold here. He is still a newbie with first attempts.

What do you even expect to label it "trying something new"? Doyoung to pick up oil painting? Start to rap? Learn how to ride a horse? Out of all neos, he is the one to try new things (covers on YT, basking, acting, KoMS, musicals). Even vlogs were his original idea. He recorded and interviewed neos bts way back before Vlive and NCTchannels.

Watch Lipstick prince (Doyoung as a make up artist) or Law of the Jungle (Doyoung as an explorer) or ISAC (Doyoung as an archer) or Halloween (Doyoung as a cosplayer).

Holy [censored] I just met Bokuto

Okay so there was news about a new resident coming into our apartment, more specifically my neighbouring unit. It was previously occupied by this really old couple and we had this small farewell party. They dropped hints that the new residents might be kind of loud but that they were great.

A few days later, my doorbell rings and who do I see? It’s [censored] Bokuto. Like, straight up. In his casual clothes. Exactly the same as the photo on his Insta page where he said he was moving. Which I liked practically a few hours ago.

He was standing there with the biggest smile and saying that he’s the new resident and that they’re giving out homemade cookies because of the baby and Bokuto’s volume. And invited me to a small dinner. And I’m. Like my brain. Literally. Like my brain is even blank now. Bokuto. Invited me. To his house. So I could have dinner. And see his wife. And little Hana.

Okay so that could only be described as one of the best moments in my entire life. Don’t worry, they said it’s fine if I share this. #actualsaints

So I finally found an outfit and took the chocolate that I was saving for myself, but since I can give my arm and leg for Bokuto what the [censored] is a chocolate, right?

I’m greeted by Wife-sama herself. Like. Less than a metre from me, saying “good afternoon” and smiling like the saint of tranquillity. (A side note but how do you have that when you live with Bokuto? And a child? My brother wants to know your secrets.) And she’s wearing what I think is Bokuto’s shirt since it’s way too big for her, I mean the end comes to her thighs. Sharing shirts is the most romantic thing a couple can do I don’t make the rules I’m just the messenger.

Anyway she invites me into their house, their amazingly aesthetical and cozy house. There’s a display case for all of Bokuto’s trophies, awards, certificates and everything. There are photographs of them together all over the walls, hung from strings spanning the entire house. There was a wall section dedicated entirely to Hana-chan. I felt like an uncivilised cave gremlin there.

Wife-sama was still making dinner and I was going to help her but little Hana-chan came to me. Like, she tottered over to me in the blue frilly dresses and tugged on my pants, babbling and smiling. Y’all I nearly died. I literally saw the gates of heaven and had a foot in but Wife-sama saved me by pulling me back into reality. By asking me if I wanted to play with Hana-chan. Which killed me again. And she was apologetic about it too? Like she doesn’t think I would give my kidney to spend time with her?

So I was playing with Hana but sneakily looking at the two of them being cute as hell in the kitchen. Bokuto was attached to her at the hip for the whole time except for when she asked him to get some ingredients. He was a puppy incarnate. They were sneaking kisses, whispering to each other and it was honestly so cute like I was getting diabetes just from one night. 

The food was amazing, the dinner talk was so fun and delightful, Hana-chan was the cutest little angel ever, this was probably the best day of my life. AND WHEN I LEFT FOR THE NIGHT, THEY BOTH HUGGED ME AND IT WAS LIKE BEING HUGGED BY CLOUDS BUT THEY SMELLED SO NICE!!

I shall never forget this day. Mark my words y’all.

I do not do clickbait, it was genuinely adorable and my cheeks are about to fall off. As was everyone else’s in the entire mall.

I was just doing some shopping, getting some snacks and popcorn for the movie marathon I was going to have and who do I hear? Yeah, it’s Bokuto. And little Hana-chan whining to Wife-sama about how she’s not getting the snacks they want. It’s from memory since I didn’t take a video, I’m not a creep and I understand boundaries unlike some of you assholes, but it went something like this.

Bokuto: But think of all the caramel popcorn we could eat! Hana: Mama, sweeties. Sweeties. (What an angel, am I right?) Wife-sama: I already said no, it’s going to ruin your dinner. It was just this repeated for like 10 minutes with Bokuto and Hana-chan alternating their whines. I would have snapped after 5 times but wow, this lady has the mental fortitude of Fort Knox.

They both sulked and followed her around as she finished her shopping. I can tell Hana is Bokuto’s daughter because her hair droops down like his and a cloud forms over her head. It was practically magic.

In the end, they bought one (1) salted caramel popcorn because Wife-sama is too soft-hearted and they literally clung onto her for 5 minutes peppering her with kisses. And Bokuto actually lifted her in his embrace. In the middle of the sweets section. Where everyone was looking.

Needless to say, she was very very red.

(A story about how the Bad Batch gained a new member)

It’s always been their dream, becoming famous, even if a certain asshole - coff coff, Crosshair, coff coff - likes to act like such childish thoughts are too low for him, and now… well, they haven’t exactly reached it yet, but they’re getting close, Hunter can feel it.

All four of them have always loved music, and they love playing in their band, with Crosshair on guitar, Tech on the keyboard, Wrecker on drums, and Hunter that guides them with his singing. They have been together since they were kids, playing with fake instruments, but as soon as they got old enough, they bought the real deal.

Sure, their music is a bit… particular, to say the least, since none of them has actually studied music - they’ve all learned to play on their own, without the need of a teacher - so it’s not exactly popular, but it’s fine like this: they wouldn’t stand out if they played the same exact shit everyone else plays, right?

 Things are moving up, although slowly, but progress is still progress.

Who would’ve thought that they would be able to find a few gigs around town? Apparently many locals are trying to get some experimental musicians in order to gain attention from the public, whom we know loves curiosities.

It’s their perfect occasion to show others what they’re capable of, getting the local crowd familiar with them and their style of music and publicizing their spotify account as well as their youtube channel, even though they mostly just put their covers there.

 … There’s still something missing to their music, though, something that they could easily fix if they find the right guy: one of the few critiques that they accept about what they produce, is that the baseline is quite weak, because it’s true.

Usually Tech takes care of it, along with Wrecker, but it’s obvious that a proper bassist would make things go way more smoothly.

 There’s only one problem: finding the bassist.

Hunter doesn’t think they’re particularly unlikable, just that they have a quite peculiar dynamic, and yet every time it seems like they’ve found the right one, they always leave in a matter of a couple of days. Oh well, he doesn’t blame them: it’s definitely harder to become famous when you insist on making experimental stuff, rather than following the trends, though where’s the fun in that, he has no idea.

 “We don’t need a bassist,” Crosshair said once.

“Just ‘cause you’re the reason most of them quit, doesn’t mean you have to be an ass about it!” Wrecker replies, but thankfully Tech’s interjection breaks up any potential argument between the two. God knows they have enough of them already.

“It has been proved that adding a base does make our music sound better,” he says, scratching his chin then. “We just need to find someone that gets along with us.”

“Maybe if we ditched Crosshair…”

“Hey!”

“Guys, c’mon,” Hunter intervenes, “there’s no need to fight.”

“Right… Sorry Hunter,” Wrecker mutters, while Crosshair says nothing, though he does lower his gaze.

At that point Hunter sighs, but he goes quickly back to a hopeful demeanor - after all, they all look up to him for guidance, he can’t falter.

“C’mon, let’s not lose hope. We’ll find someone…”

  Indeed, they do find someone.

 It happens almost causally: Crosshair’s browsing the internet, when he stumbles about one of those clickbait-y articles about a talented bassist who’s keeping playing even after losing his arm.

Despite the fact that he’s not expecting to find anything mind-blowing, Crosshair still decides to check the article out of curiosity.

What he finds is the same ol’ tear jerking story that makes him roll his eyes, not because of the story per se, but for how it’s framed. It makes him wonder if the bassist in question, Echo is his name - quite peculiar, it makes him wonder if it’s a stage name like his own is - has read the article beforehand and has approved of what has been written on it. With the way he appears in pictures, he seems humble and nice, so Crosshair doubts it.

Something catches Crosshair’s attention thought: apparently, despite his story, Echo plays solo, but not for personal choice. Just like them, he’s having a hard time finding someone willing to play with him.

At the end of the article, he finds a series of videos in which, he supposes, Echo plays. It’s like they’re taunting him, trying to get him to watch them.

Eh, what the hell, how much could it hurt to give them a peek?

 Well, color Crosshair impressed. He’s not a base expert, of course, but he has never heard someone play like this Echo does; he’s truly a natural. He’s so fast that it seems that he’s barely moving his fingers, to the point that it’s hard for Crosshair to follow each and every movement.

Holy shit, could he be…

“Hunter, come here! You gotta see this guy!”

 Echo manages to charm everyone.

“It’s him!” Wrecker exclaims. “He’s the one!”

“Yes, his addition would be very beneficial to us,” Tech agrees, eyes still peeled to the screen, watching rapt as Echo plays.

Crosshair turns to Hunter. “So? What do you think?”

“He’s good,” Hunter admits, “but I wonder if he’d be willing to give us a chance…”

“He seems nice enough,” Tech comments, but he too seems to share Hunter’s worry.

“In that case, let’s just ask him,” Wrecker suggests. “Didn’t we do the same with the others too?”

“That’s true, it’s worth a shot…”

“C’mon,” Crosshair begins, “we’re all on the same page for once, let’s just do it.”

“Alright,” Hunter concedes, allowing himself to feel hopeful, though then he points at Tech. “But you’re the one writing the e-mail this time.”

Tech chuckles. “Leave it to me.”

  Dear Bad Batch,

I have been a fan of yours for quite some time. I find your take on music refreshing and courageous, which unfortunately isn’t something that I can say for many other artists of this time.

You can imagine how honored I’ve felt reading your e-mail! I’ve never seen myself as someone who can be all that inspiring, so I was surprised to read how much of an impression I’ve made on you.

That said, I would love to meet up and discuss about music and a potential collaboration. Actually, I’m looking forward to it.

These guys — and they are usually guys — love using terms like “logic.” They will tell you, over and over, how they love to use logic, and how the people they follow online also use logic. They are also massive fans of declaring that they have “facts,” that their analysis is “unbiased,” that they only use “‘reason” and “logic” and not “emotions” to make decisions. But for the Logic Guys, the purpose of using these words — the sacred, magic words like “logic,” “objectivity,” “reason,” “rationality,” “fact” — is not to invoke the actual concepts themselves. It’s more a kind of incantation, whereby declaring your argument the single “logical” and “rational” one magically makes it so — and by extension, makes you both smart and correct, regardless of the actual rigor or sources of your beliefs. The “redpill” metaphor here is telling, because it implies that obtaining knowledge and arguing well is not a skill that is slowly and indefinitely improved upon, but an achievement to be unlocked in a single moment: once you’ve swallowed the pill, you turn into a smart person, and from then on, all your opinions are correct. A good, contemporary example of the logic incantation at work can be found in the career of Ben Shapiro. Shapiro, a popular conservative pundit with half a million Youtube subscribers and 1.86 million Twitter followers, is known for his mantra “facts don’t care about your feelings.” Youtube is full of videos titled things like “BRILLIANT Ben Shapiro DESTROYS college feminist with REASON and INTELLIGENCE.” (The prevalence of the term “destroy” is interesting — if you destroy something, it’s not there to bother you anymore, so you don’t have to worry about it any longer. Hmm.) A New York Times profile called Shapiro “the cool kid’s philosopher.” The right-leaning corners of the internet are full of admiration for just how logical he is. This is a testament to the power of branding, because on closer inspection, Shapiro isn’t a very logical person at all. In Current Affairs, Nathan Robinson laid out in a lengthy takedown how Shapiro’s admittedly sharp law-school skills belie the fact that half the time he speaks, he uses insults rather than arguments, and the other half, the arguments are usually fallacious (if you support a higher tax rate on corporations, “why not make tax rates 100 percent”?) and/or based on heavily ideological and emotional presuppositions. Shapiro maintains that gay parents shouldn’t adopt children because “a man and a woman do a better job of raising a child than two men or two women,” relying on an old reactionary trope rather than a preponderance of the evidence that shows children adopted by same-sex couples do as well as those adopted by different-sex couples. He insists on misgendering trans people because he believes that pronouns should be used based on a person’s chromosomes, a position that would get you laughed out of a room either of medical professionals or of linguists. His position on the unlawful actions of the Israeli government, as Robinson illustrates in his takedown, seems to be entirely based on a combination of his personal religious beliefs and an insistence that Palestinian Arab civilians are “evil” (a position which has led him to support ethnic cleansing in the occupied territories). None of this seems like “logic” to me. It seems like a person who has very strongly held presuppositions that they insist on holding onto the way a child holds onto their stuffed animal — stubbornly, and with a comically frowny face you kind of want to tickle under the chin. And yet the brand still endures. According to his supporters, and even many who might not support him, Ben Shapiro loves facts. Why? Well, because he says he loves facts. He’s not basing his assertions on feelings, and we know this because he says that he isn’t. By insisting on this interpretation of his own character, over and over, buoyed by the idolatrous support of his loyal fans and the snarky titles of his clickbait videos, Shapiro conjures into being an image of himself as The Rational Man. Say the magic words enough times, and the spell will be cast over your audience.

On Fandom

Let's open with a few obvious points, regarding Disney's treatment of Star Wars as a franchise.

I wholly understand that the Mouse doesn't ultimately give a shit about canon, and that mischaracterization is likely the least of their concerns if twisting motivations around creates one or two extra opportunities for merch sales. I'm entirely aware that Disney's big tentpoles are ripe for the kind of post-boom cynicism that inevitably follows whenever something occupies the zeitgeist and then punches its ceiling open. I'm aware of it because I'm old enough to remember having seen it happen to other genres, decades ago. Ask my parents, and they'll tell you stories of a decade where everything out of America that made it to Quebec's movie theaters was a Western in theme or setting. Ask me, and I'll remind you that the eighties were the playground of machismo and political revisionism as shaped by right-wing chop-socky screenplay writers. As for the nineties, they were defined by a rising techno-fetishism that ultimately climaxed with 1999's The Matrix.

So yes, the Aughties, 2010s and beyond seem to be marked by the concept of the Superhero, with renewed efforts to also implant the Space Opera as a leading thematic construct. Yes, I'm well aware of how cynical this feels.

However, having been someone who's followed Star Wars from the original trilogy through to the prequels and sequels, and having paid attention to the creatives involved, I can't shake the notion that there's something earnest about Disney's foray into serial, TV-bite-sized Space Opera cruft. I'm not saying that the Mouse cares, because it can't, but I'd bet my ass that Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni and Robert Rodriguez care a whole damn lot about Boba Fett, Din Djarin, Bo-Katan Kryze, Ahsoka Tano and Grogu. The pipeline is agnostic and only cares about the money pouring in, sure, but the stuff that's piped through feels so minutely crafted and so researched that I just can't give any credence to the naysayers from clickbait portals or even to The Guardian's usually-astute Pop Culture sleuths.

The Mandalorian felt like Jon Favreau and Filoni realizing they had a virgin field to liberally seed with intertextual references and aesthetic callbacks - and almost actually felt like what they'd eventually do with Boba Fett, if only structured around the fact that they didn't yet have access to this storied enigma of a character. So, in lieu of filling in Jabba and Bib Fortuna's flying pincushion, they first figured they might flesh out what fans themselves built upon the originally-blank slate of a rejected design for a "Shock Trooper" that became a bounty hunter for hire - essentially Star Wars' answer to the trope of the Ronin, as the representative of a dispossessed culture forced to ply the particulars of its own rites and customs across the stars, as opposed to in service of a leader's goals of expansion or defence.

The first series makes callbacks to Kurosawa both in tone and in visuals, and The Book of Boba Fett takes this one step further by taking the Token Natives and usual tribal annoyances of the setting - the Tusken Raiders - and actually building a culture around their animalistic grunts and bellows. It takes one upending of the variable canon - Boba's Death By Sarlacc - and uses it to construct something that feels solid and tangible; something that feels purposeful, as opposed to the usual reification of the setting that so many fans seem to clamor for.

Dig around the usual platforms and Geek Culture dens, and you'll soon realize that Star Wars is only ever Star Wars if planet-hopping is involved and if Jedi enter the fray within the first narrative arc. To some, Star Wars is only ever Star Wars if we're shown travelling arcs of Coruscant and dry Senatorial meetings where the Newest Slide Into Fascism is given a peppy title and a new dress code. Unsurprisingly, I don't agree with that assessment.

The Galaxy still is as such in their universe, which implies that untold billions of lives will carry out enriching and exciting stories without so much as reaching the closest Lagrangian point or even coming close to engaging Hyperspace. We've grown so used to story arcs that treat the Galaxy like a vertical slice that some fans just can't seem to think of the setting in different terms.

I'll be fair and say that I can't quite suspend my disbelief in an all-Tattooine setting, but only because I just so happen to know most of everything related to Tattooine is and always has been filmed in and around Tunisia. Past that, however, I'm that one weirdo that was excited to see places like Mos Eisley and Espa being given more than a passing glance, and I've been loving the way TBoBF strips down Mos Espa's social dynamics and unapologetically turns hardened mobsters into desperate yokels up to anything and everything so long as the opportunity to make a buck is present. Seeing Fett and Fennec Shand effectively act out the plot of Scarface if Tony Montana had remained sober throughout is amusing to the worldbuilder I am, and the insistence of the locals in referring to the criminals as the Families is a fun eye-opener.

You'd figure that with the popularity of the Found Family trope, Boba Fett's efforts to civilize Tattooine and protect it from the Pyke Syndicate's grabby little hands would've been accepted more broadly, especially how the previously blank loner is now collecting personality traits and friends at an amusingly alarming rate.

Whoops, careful, there! A little more, and we might have to call that Character Development, of all things! Be still my heart - how can the last several decades' Stoic Nothingburger of a character be savaged like so!

Or, well, so seems to be the rhetoric around him, especially considering the fact that Fett is at the crux of five or six distinct timelines, all depending on which comic arc, novel series or unpublished draft you personally choose to elect as your canon.

Again, I'm just glad to see Boba getting gelled into shape, and especially considering how one of his three custodians just so happens to come from a culture that's just as ritualistically martial as the Mandalorians are - if not more. Pay attention, and you'll spot definitively Maöri traits in Fett's story; not the least of which being the importance of the Tusken Dueling Stick in the Raiders' greater imprint.

The problem is that all of the above just bounces back against pundits who either have it in for the source of the project (a media conglomerate) or for those who didn't treat Fett and the Sarlacc Pit like graven idols deserving of bronze casts. One of my cousins is in that camp, and his outrage is more amusing than anything else.

"They're not respecting Boba Fett's legacy," he seems to say, "and his legacy is to die in the jaws of some sand-beast after uttering less than ten words across three movies. His paltry presence is what built his mystique, and the magic is obliterated in their patching him up and gifting him with thoughts, words and ambitions of his own."

It's best to let go, in situations like this. We've seen a lot of discourse on here on the notion of "letting people enjoy things". I'm starting to think that letting folks hate openly matters just as much - especially when the object of that hatred is so transitory and unimportant.

It's Disney we're talking about. They'll throw an Omega Death Star into the mix ten years from now, obliterate the Galaxy's current canon and then reset everything to have an excuse to do one of two things:

an unlikely crossover between Star Wars and the MCU takes place

everything gets rebooted, the original trilogy leaves Disney Canon and A New Hope gets a nice, shiny, IMAX-friendly redo.

I love you and your posts, seeing so many biased posts bashing a character to prop up another had started to make me dislike these proped up characters even though I used to enjoy them, and you're reminding me of why I like them all by reminding everyone how fucked up they all are, bless

This bit o’ mail is certainly a painful reminder of how fandom putting their fave(s) on a pedestal while bashing other character(s) is not just something that exists in its own little consolidated circle jerk and doesn’t affect anyone else. This discourse sucks outsiders into its orbit. It multiplies resentment. The hardcore stan mentality (as I have named it, though maybe “anti” is actually more appropriate here) creates a vicious cycle continuously gaining velocity and size. You prop up your fave, you ignore your fave’s flaws, you pick at every flaw of another character at the same time (sometimes flaws that aren't even fair/don’t really exist). Other people watch you misrepresent and tear apart a character they have found comfort and maybe even their very self reflected in, who they understand implicitly, and they can’t see why you don’t or won’t even try to understand them. They get mad that you reduce a character they love who means a lot to them—suck out that character’s complexity in order to turn them into a punching bag, and they wanna tear down your fave and build theirs up in response. So it all just goes on and on and on. 

This whole situation was a major motivator in me making this blog. I wanted to show that the characters are flawed—ALL of them are, and also that that is OKAY. We can make sense of it, and we can have compassion, and we can understand why they do what they do, and what their intentions were, if we’re actually trying and paying attention (with very few exceptions, in which case I blame writing ;P). I’m not going to pretend SPN is incredible television in terms of writing, but the moral debacles and the conflicts have never completely lacked nuance. Sometimes you have to work more to see one person’s side than another’s, but there has always been understanding to be found, even if not agreement... Even within some of the most ill-advised and morally questionable actions. And fuck—some of these situations... where both sides are written to have a pretty damn complex and interesting and understandable POV... that I see getting reduced to really simple black and white opportunities for harsh judgement just really blows my mind. (Note: I say this knowing memes/jokes also reduce complex situations... but the intent here is different, and memes aren’t intended to show the full complexity of the situation—I’m not big brained enough to be able to fit the full complexity of say, Sam drinking demon blood, or Dean getting Sam possessed, into one meme, but this is also where making many memes about the same situation over time comes in). 

What I did learn from making this blog and gaining a following is that there are a lot of fans who aren't like this... but that extreme opinions are what get attention and notes. You suck your readers in by taking an extreme stance rather than a moderate one. That's what gets people reading—that they're angry—either because they agree with you or because they don’t. It's clickbait. Thus we tend to see fandom’s extremes suck up notes like crazy, and we go, “what the fuck?” thinking those groups actually represent the fandom as a whole, and they... actually don’t. I have 10K followers. I creep on y’alls blogs sometimes... and the vast majority of people don't seem to operate in these extremes. Of course, the irony here is that my content plays into those same clickbait-y elements that get antis notes (though that was not my conscious intention. I also never thought this blog would get big. I thought I would get hate mail a lot when I first started it... I was very wrong about that! =D). All that to say... fandom can feel like a huge bummer, but there are a lot of chill people lurking around, and memes are fun.

Why are you so determined to create drama here when there's literally so much actual drama that happened that we could be talking about? I've handed you all sorts of well-substantiated things that went wrong with Euphoria's season 2 production, things that I blame squarely on Sam Levinson, and instead you want to talk about totally unsubstantiated rumors. I don't get the end game here.

But let's talk about it. As of right now, "there's currently no confirmation that Alexa Demie or Maddy is leaving Euphoria. For now, it all just remains fan speculation based on that one scene." And the scene they're talking about isn't even the gun scene- it's the one where Maddy suggests that she's going to stop being Theo's babysitter. If you want to provide receipts for where she says she's leaving, please do, but I couldn't find that anywhere. The (two) YouTube videos about it are obvious clickbait that are creating a story where there is none. One of them literally starts like this:

It's totally possible that Alexa will leave the show, but I think if that happens, it's more likely because Maddy's character is a high school senior and will be graduating from East Highland High School alongside Nate and Cassie. And I don't think the show is going to sacrifice three of its main characters, so I'm sure they'll find a way to keep her around.

Alexa has said that, "I'm always in, I'm always really open. I believe that there's a spiritual element to acting and to writing.. I feel like subconsciously all of the energies of all the cast members and Sam, it's all kind of blending. And so, I guess personally, I like that we see more vulnerability [in Maddy]. I like that she's a little bit more nuanced and complex this season and not so in your face every second."

And about the gun scene, she seems focused more on the technical difficulty of the scene than the emotional effect of it. She said, "[it was difficult], for many reasons. It was an incredibly difficult scene not only because of the gun to my head, but because it was choreographed in a really specific way. We had to move with the camera movements and it was really broken up, and so it took us two days to shoot. It was basically all we did all day on those days....We didn't have a lot of time. We kind of just jumped into it. We were really figuring it out as we went on and as we were shooting it. Sam was discovering new things with the camera, and Jacob and I were discovering new things with the dynamic between us. There were a couple of moments that were improvised, but not a lot of prep [or] conversation beforehand. And then during, I mean, it's such an intense scene that when you're not filming — because when they break, they're figuring out light and there's a lot going on — as an actor you just have to try to stay in your own world, and I'm definitely not the type of actor that can just break a scene like that and start laughing and joking. I have to kind of stay in my own world and tune everyone else out." She has also said, "it was not an easy scene to film. Really, it's just traumatic [for Maddy] to walk into your bedroom, and someone that you love, and who you thought loved you, is sitting there threatening you with a gun."

Like... again, if she comes out and says, "shooting that scene was really traumatic for me, and Sam forced me to do things I wasn't comfortable with," I'll 100% be on your side. But I'm not hearing that she's leaving the show, or that the gun scene was traumatic for her, or that Sam is a terrible director who forces his actors to do things they don't want to do. I'm mostly just hearing that acting is hard, and technical, and complicated to get right. Which like... yeah, it is. Zendaya has talked about how filming Rue's intervention scene was incredibly emotionally difficult. I'm sure filming the scene where Effy tries to kill herself was emotionally difficult for Kaya. But that doesn't mean that it's bad or that the director is being abusive/manipulative/weird/traumatizing people. It just kind of means that dramatic acting is dramatic.

idunno if anybody took my post the other day as me “cancelling dream for cheating in a videogame”, i posted it mostly out of bemusement of the whole situation, and because that video was really well put-together. (context: his 1.16 speedruns were disqualified by the minecraft speedrun.com moderators & there was a video & document explaining why).

I definitely don’t correlate cheating a speedrun w/ ableism, racism, etc etc. I already knew about a lot of nasty shit dream has done, like the video he did with Notch, and how all of his early content was about pewdiepie, just further normalizing those two to his young audience. I’ve always disliked him for those things, which I’ve been aware of pretty much as long as I’ve known of him, and he has never apologized for those things. It’s why whenever I posted about him before (which was... maybe once or twice?), I always say “don’t stan him or anything he sucks”.

I had no idea there was so much more to it honestly. It’s kind of galling seeing the full context now, because whenever I’ve seen any kind of criticism against him, it’s been him presenting it in an apology. I dunno why I wasn’t suspicious of this given what I already knew about him, but the guy seems to be very clever with how he damage controls any sort of possible controversy regarding him. He presents a really heartfelt, honest apology for whatever happened and gives a few cherrypicked examples of things that people said about him and says how wrong he was and how he doesn’t want to alienate his viewers.

The fact that it’s Dream presenting the evidence of his controversies, means that he gets to control how the conversation goes. Instead of a popular “mcyt” stan account getting to control the conversation, pointing out the shit he’s said and done, he addresses it in a livestream, and does not provide the original context. Huh, I wonder why. It’s almost as if he doesn’t want everyone to see that his mistakes are more than just little “oopsies”, it’s him being actively malicious and getting so defensive that he tells off anybody who could possibly disagree with his view of things.

While his actions and words are pretty horrid on their own, I think the thing that has me most concerned about Dream is... He seems pretty fuckin’ good at manipulating peoples’ perception of him.

After the video about his speedruns being cheated came out the other day, he had this to say on twitter (this is his second, “personal” account):

Now, as I said before, cheating in a videogame isn’t at all comparable to racism or ableism. What I’m trying to point out here is his response to any sort of criticism.

The video he’s referring to is this one, published by Geosquare 2 days ago (dec 11th). What’s interesting to note here is how he singles out Geosquare specifically in this tweet. If you click on the video, the first few seconds establishes that it’s a video made by the entire Minecraft java edition speedrunning mod team (which is made up of a team of over a dozen people). The video and document was a true team effort from every single one of them, and it only got posted to Geosquare’s account (& got his narration) because he’s already a youtuber with a pretty comfortable amount of subscribers.

So, instead of pointing his ire (and those of his many, many fans) at the whole speedrun mod team, instead, he points it squarely on Geosquare, so that people have a convenient name to latch onto. He then accuses Geosquare of using his name as “clickbait” in order to get “easy views”, sowing the seed of this idea that Geosquare is doing this in an opportunistic grab for personal gain. If you clicked on the video and saw the description/pinned comment, you’d see that not only did Geosquare disable monetization on the video, he disabled monetization on his entire channel for as long as this drama goes on (and he knew there would be drama, dream made extra sure to threaten the mods with a video of his own in retaliation if they ended up banning him).

Then, in a reply to the first tweet, he says that there are “multiple moderators” messaging him saying the verdict was “biased” and that they may quit the mod team. He provides no evidence for this. However, if you click on the tweet and view any of the thousands of replies from his fans, it doesn’t matter that he gave no evidence, his word is enough. If you’re wondering, Geosquare and a few other mods have stated many times that it was a group decision on their part, and nobody had any question in their mind that Dream must have cheated. So... Dream, who are these “mods” that are messaging you? He won’t say.

Lastly here, I want to point out that in his next tweet on the matter, he makes this very bitter comment about how useless it was for them to investigate a “16th place run”. It’s a minor detail, but I think it’s worth mentioning; this kind of downplays how impressive his run was at the time. At the time he submitted his sub-20 minute speedrun, it was a top 5 run, in a very competitive category of speedrunning the game. In the 2 months since, several people have passed his time using new strats, but that doesn’t diminish the fact it was a pretty amazing “run”... if it weren’t cheated of course. But, I’m just rambling on about how petty I am about him cheating at this point so let me get back to the main point here.

If you see the numbers on these tweets (hundreds of thousands of likes), you’ll understand why this is pretty scary for those speedrun mods. The same day this happened Geosquare joked around “I’ve only gotten one death threat so far!”. Dream’s fanbase is unparalleled in minecraft youtube, and incredibly sizeable for a youtube channel overall. If you’re not familiar with this new wave of “mcyt” minecraft accounts, it’s... it’s pretty much exclusively because of Dream’s fame. He’s the driving force of minecraft youtube content right now. Any youtuber who even breathes near the guy blows up in subscribers & views. His minecraft server, “Dream SMP”, is like... it has a legitimate cultural impact, whether that sentence disgusts you or not. Especially for young gen Z kids.

The point I’m trying to make is, ever since he came onto the scene in early 2019, he’s grown and grown at exponential rates, and I can’t understate the kind of influence he has on not just his own fans, but the fans of like. Pretty much anyone who is plugged in to anything minecraft youtube related right now.

People have discussed this before, but Dream’s sudden rise to fame happened shockingly quick. So quick that it’s almost impossible it were by accident. He’d spent something like a year or two studying how the youtube algorithm works, how famous youtubers grow their popularity, etc. He spent a lot of time studying, and it paid off for him. It makes me wonder if he’s studied how youtubers deal with controversy as well. Because it seems like he’s doing everything right to keep his fans “loyal” to him.

So I think it’s not unreasonable to say that it is pretty goddamn concerning when he reacts to criticism like this. His immense fanbase, who are often worryingly obsessed with him, of mostly impressionable kids... It’s a recipe for disaster, in the hands of someone so entitled and immature.

I think what really has me worried, though, is a video he published to his second channel the other day. Recently, he published a video about his “stans”. The entire video essentially boiled down to him disputing claims that “dream stans” were toxic, or that stanning people or “stan culture” was creepy/unhealthy. He spent a lot of the video comparing stans of content creators to passionate fans of football teams, and expressed repeatedly how he thought it was normal and OK to be totally obsessed with a content creator and engage in “stan culture”, as long as you weren’t being a legitimate stalker. He pretty much only talked about the positives of being a Dream Stan, and how positive the “community” is. The whole video painted this really idealistic image of what it means to be a Stan of a person, and fandom in general.

Now... I don’t know about everyone else reading this, but I found that video to be... incredibly creepy and weird. It completely ignores any actual arguments about how stan culture can be unhealthy, and how engaging so heavily in parasocial relationships can be quite damaging, especially to younger people.

But, mostly? It seemed like the whole video was basically designed just to reinforce the most unhealthy impulses of his stans, and reward them with the positive encouragement that he actually enjoys it when they are obsessed with him so much that they can’t imagine he could ever possibly do anything wrong.

And that? That is fucking dangerous for a person with such a huge fanbase to be peddling to their fans.

Surely, he must know- a great deal of his fans are so obsessed with him, that they think they know him as well as, if not more than, a personal friend. So that when he does something disagreeable and wrong, and he claims “no that’s not how it happened, they’re biased and trying to cancel me because they’re jealous”, they just take that at face value, because why would he lie? He’s so honest and genuine in his videos and livestreams!

This sort of behavior from Dream, along with his tweets I posted earlier, reads to me as if he knows exactly what he’s doing. I think he is purposefully insulating his fans from the truth of his actions, so that he can present this idealistic picture of him in their mind, so that it seems absurd that he would do something wrong.

I think it’s only a matter of time before it comes out he’s done something much worse, honestly. What it is, is hard to say- he’s already done so much that anyone reading this should rescind their support for him, imo. But, I know that none of this matters to his millions of fans. While I worry for them, I also worry for anyone who becomes a target of Dream. I could see this speedrunning drama being the start of a downward spiral for him. Things could get real ugly with all that minecraft clout getting to his head... I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

TL;DR, dream sucks, and not just because he cheats at videogames.

Was it in the Chosun interview where SR tried to clear his name that among the members, he said that his relationship w/ Daesung is still uneasy? It just occured to me that, aside from making fun of Seunghyun (whom everyone in the group agrees is someone he can't eat alone with as they don't get along well), he was trying to make Dae look bad & drag him knowing that some people still have issues w/ the car accident. During this time, Dae is doing well in the military, he even performs later than Taeyang, who had to introduce him. I saw a news report (MBC i think) with the anchor saying something like "This is why they say Daesung is the best." He has no chance of succeeding in dragging GD & YB, but with Dae there's a chance he could divert the negative attention to him. Just thinking about this possibility makes me angry. That's just so nefarious. He's a literal POS.

I apologize I haven’t been as active on here. I’ve been letting the waters simmer before the awakening (the grand return) therefore there wasn’t much I was missing right now.

To answer this, I wanted to make sure these facts were proven so I dug around a little to assist you with an answer.

On my journey of digging I’ve found an article dated from late 2018 of a clickbait headline?

‘Daesung and Seungri still awkward after 13 years?’

It wasn’t exactly clickbait liked you’d assume. The ot5 bond of never breaking? Well, this article wouldn’t be something you’d want to read then if you believe that title is false.

Back on variety during the last few months of Seungri’s promoting as Bigbang and himself (what a great representation…..) Seungri, whom guest on ‘idol room’ at the time, spoke about the awkwardness him and Daesung still face after 13 years of being in a group together, the claiming of such a strong bond doesn’t seem to fit the narrative. Daesung and Seungri weren’t as close as Maknae line protesters claim. So I find it amusing how so many of Daesung’s fans still leave an open space in their hearts for Seungri when it was clear as ‘dae’ he wasn’t one of Daesung’s close companions. More so what the fans wished. Again… nobody owes Seungri anything, not the other fans of the four, not the members, no one.

Koreboo, im not a fan of this outlet at all though it’s not clickbait as he addressed this on a show. Of course back then it wasn’t mentioned. I suppose yet again this flew over the heads of vips, I don’t remember hearing much about this, which surprises me? You’d think I’d be a conversation vips would ask, how could that be? Why was that said? Well now is a better time to compare and contrast these members. Nothing about it surprises me, Seungri does not ever surprise me with his scummy, selfish, narcissistic built personality. There’s many scraps around to find and realize they aren’t close. Daesung has made this obvious for their whole career.

Im not sure where this was said though I remember reading this off someone explaining the time Daesung was speaking about the others and popularity about himself. He doesn’t like being the most popular, always in the spotlight of attention, he enjoys to stand behind and still shine with the rest! After his car accident where I still see ignorant pests talk ill, not knowing anything about incident neither Daesung himself or what he went through. It’s a shame to still see anyone bring up 2011 without properly knowing. I was not into the group at that time but hearing about it, what actually happened I understand why he felt the way he did, why he almost chose to leave. Back the point, Daesung is humbled enough where doesn’t need to put on a show and use his other members popularity to boost his own. He enjoys being more on the side, private in his own business than to be the topic of every conversation.

Seungri has always been a big ‘POS’ it only took burning sun to proof that and everything else that adds on to the list of his. Looking back there’s so much evidence to pull on Seungri and how he’s not a decent person. Fame and money took over him, he became a monster, money and attention is all Seungri wanted as an idol, enough was never enough he had to start prostitution to earn a few extra bucks on the side.. now look where he is. He deserves to be behind bars, maybe he can also humble himself as he takes time to ‘reflect’ about his behavior.

Hi! I was just wondering if you've ever stumbled across this video on YouTube? The title's pretty eye-catching: An Analysis of the Hidden Misogyny and Racism in Disney Star Wars | Video Essay, but it's not really misleading or clickbait. There's a LOT, and I'd say it feels like a conspiracy theory, but... it seems pretty well-researched (there's sources in the description box), and it has some really interesting points about the sequel trilogy... and I was wondering what you think?

it's a very long video (almost 2 hours), and for me the part that holds the most water is in the final 2 minutes or so, where they say:

As a very ironic conclusion, I have to admit the possibility that all of this is a coincidence... [A] conspiracy theory... just doesn't make sense to [Disney's] overall financial strategy... It's far more likely that the writers and directors just didn't know how to properly write female or minority characters. It's far more likely that most of the writers are white men, that any subconscious biases against minorities leaked into their writing, that they're not even consciously aware that they have these racist tendencies. It's far, far more likely that these hidden biases against women are present in all men, and those biases just leaked through into the scripts. The most logical conclusion is that there is no agenda. There is no conspiracy.

with that part, i agree wholeheartedly

the breakdown of racism and misogyny in the st films itself is mostly fine. they are right that there are a lot of racist and sexist undertones in the st, even though disney tries to sell it as progressive. but i think they're a little too insistent that there must be a conspiracy. the video would be a lot stronger if they used their mountain of evidence to show how people's biases manifest in the work they create, and just how pervasive it is. it happens all the time, without conscious thought, in every little thing we do, and that's why we have to always be actively working to be conscious of our biases

most of the points they make i can attribute to one of these things:

subconscious biases. generally, racist media/actions don't happen because someone sat down and said, 'wow, let's make some racism today.' they happen because people carry biases that shape their work and actions, and because there was nobody in the writer's room to check those biases and say 'hey maybe we shouldn't do that'

capitalism. disney wants to make money. they want to capitalize on the star wars nostalgia, which is why so many things from the ot are still around. they want to make safe storytelling choices that won't alienate large parts of their fanbase, but they also want to seem progressive so they can market their films to women, gays, and poc, regardless of whether the message behind the façade is actually progressive

fan response. this ties into point 2. it's pretty well-known now that things like reylo, kylo ren redemption, finn and rose being sidelined etc happened because enough fans were loud enough about it that disney thought it would make an impact on their bottom line. it's why we know that fans can make a difference in what kind of media is created, and why discussions of racism and sexism in fan spaces is important

just plain bad writing. especially after abrams' recent 'maybe a plan would've been good,' confirming what we pretty much knew all along, that the writers had no idea what they were doing

imo, conspiracy theories only hurt the examination of racism, sexism, etc in media/community spaces. people think, 'well i'm not part of a racist conspiracy,' and then they stop there and don't self-reflect and realize that they too have biases that come out subconsciously

Pokémon Problem

I’m gonna try and collect my thoughts about this but there is an issue that the Pokémon community needs to talk about more to which I don’t see any, or that I just happen to be missing when looking up Pokémon posts on here and Twitter. I don’t know how long this will be and I’ll probably make some spelling errors along the way (though will try to correct any I see A.S.A.P.), so I’ll make a keep reading bar and put my information below.

So we all remember when Logan Paul created his first Pokémon unboxing video last year (or the year before; the pandemic has made my sense of time more terrible than it usually is). 

My brother’s the one that first showed it to me, though I’m not too sure it was this ass’s first video. My brother knew I still loved Pokémon since I always ask for something Pokémon related for one of the options for Christmas and I thought that was sweet of him. 

As a kid, Pokémon was always a big part of my life. I watched a couple of the show’s episodes, played whatever games I was able to get, and collected cards. Out of all of the Pokémon things I tried to own, the cards were usually the easiest to collect. They were cheaper than VHSs/DVDs and the games, and they were very accessible! Whenever my parents went out, and my sister and I came along, we’d usually be able to nab a pack if we went to the gas station. Not only that, but my grandparents even helped us out by buying any cards or packs they saw whenever they went to any garage/yard sales and would gift them to my sister and I.

Back to the issue-

At first, I thought the Pokémon unboxing video was an innocent upload that would help give birth to new fans of the franchise, and in a way it did. Even if that ass might not have changed and gained any morals, he still had tons of impressionable followers and it didn’t seem like there was anything malicious attached to the video at the time. It was only after thinking about what I was watching that some fears about the video pop into my mind. It seemed like there were lots of excited commotions every so often, to which came from finding legendries and holos inside some packs. This would be normally fine, since these are rare cards, but as the video went on and more rare cards were found the more I realized this wasn’t about reliving the feeling of opening cards to add to a collection, this was just about how much a card was worth and how much money they would eventually get once they sold it.

Don’t get me wrong! People can collect for the purpose of price alone, but as Logan uploaded more videos about “finding” crazy expensive cards inside booster packs, the more my fears became front and center. I didn’t even hear about what else Logan did in these videos until the Pokémon problem got really bad and I had to look up how it became a problem.

Apparently there was a “Pokémon card expert” that Logan Paul decided to bring into his videos to tell the audience how much each rare card was worth as well as advise the team on what packs to buy. Hilariously the dude had purchased packs for other people as well, because of his connection to Logan’s unboxing video(s), and they turned out to mainly be useless or at least non-rare cards. There’s a theory that I have about it after watching this video, so I was going to say how ironic it was that it happened at all, but now I’m pretty sure the dude knew what would be in the box and was hoping the group he was with would open the it once he was gone.

Because of things like this, even with the duped “expert’s” purchase, a lot more people have been getting into buying cards. Again, I’m not saying that buying Pokémon cards for profit is a bad thing, but it’s generally a bummer when there’s more competition with people grabbing good packs just to have a better chance at getting the legendries and holos.

Unfortunately the problems don’t end there and it’s not even the worst of it. Because the videos were doing so well, more people decided to take part in buying their own booster packs and record their finds. Even Youtubers that were not known for Pokémon participated! From what I can see, most videos are basically just the creators trying to get in on the bandwagon, getting into the craze to get money as well as to help grow their channel. Obviously nothing bad and there weren't any messages directly towards the audience to buy as many cards as one can.

Even if the other channels weren’t directly responsible, the usual clickbait titles and expressions thumbnails would work like they’re supposed to and get people to check the video out. It was clear Pokémon was popular again and certain money hungry people knew that this was a safe bet to try and get in on the action. Since it was mainly the card collecting of the franchise that was affected, many people started rushing to start a collection for the first time while others dusted off their old collection and restarted buying packs. I, myself, definitely returned to collecting 4 dollar packs at Walmart when I found any available, yet as the pandemic continued and people had the money to spend, a new problem arose. 

Because of the increased popularity of cards, people that think of ways to make a profit have tainted the hobby. People created connections with vendors; they kept schedules of when stores restocked and headed there early just to buy out the store’s card stock and sell for double the price on seller sites or their own.

As of the first of June most if not all stores have pulled cards off shelves and have halted any sales. What used to be a hobby where the products were easy to acquire, now people can really only buy Pokémon cards online. And even then there’s no guarantee... Though I’m only slightly sad for myself for not always being able to get a pack every so often, I’m more frustrated about this situation for the kids. 

When I was their age, even if I didn’t really know how to play the game, I loved collecting Pokémon cards for the art and to possibly get my favorite pokémon. Even if I didn’t get them, there are tons of mons that I liked and get excited to see when opening packs! Now, kids that want to get into collecting, or have been collecting can’t go to Walmart or Target to get their usual packs anymore because of this. Like I stated before and even in the picture above, cards aren’t always available online either! Pages of the Pokémon Center’s TCG inventory have mostly been stamped with a sold out sign most of the time. The only other sites that sell them are from the very same people that created this problem in the first place. Scalpers. 

Guys, we need to do something about this! 

Not just for us to have a better chance at gaining cards, but for kids to be able to actually get a pack for a normal price! The ones who are the actual demographic.

“hey, loser” I say as he walks in with our food and... is that ice cream? “wait, did you get ice cream?” 

“yeah, I got your favorite flavor!” he says with a smile. my heart aches at the kind gesture. “wow your house is so nice” he sets the food on my counter as he glances around. 

“thank you, im really into interior design... and nice houses” i joke as i examine the ice cream David got for me. he chuckles as he gets my food out of the bag and sets it up in my living room. I put on a movie to watch but we end up muting it and just talking instead. our conversations just seem to flow. “what's a memory that stands out to you from your childhood?” I ask him. “there's so many things,” he puts his arm around the back of my couch as we sit sideways to face each other. we finished eating forever ago. “probably just all of high school. I learned so much, from my friends and my teachers. nothing academically, obviously.” he laughs. I smile to him and run my fingers through my hair. he watches my movements and for a moment its quiet.

“I think you're really smart.” I say finally. “I love how you push me, you're always there for me, and you just come up with the best ideas. you're so creative.” 

“wow. what did I do to deserve your kindness?” he asks with a slight laugh.

“I can think of a few things.” our conversation became much lighter after that. after a while we went into my home studio and he helped me write. the night was filled with jokes and endless laughing but also had serious moments too. I shared very personal details about my life. but the best thing of all was that there was no camera in sight. it was just friends being friends. no clickbait. no underlying purpose for the long stay. it was perfect.

“hey have you heard anything from y/n and Charlie? are they dating?” Ilya comes up and whispers to me.

“no man, I haven't heard anything. I was with y/n all night last night and I wasn't exactly begging her to give me details but we did talk for hours about random stuff and she never brought him up or texted anyone. I don't know they might not be.” I say with hope shining through the cracks of my voice.

“I can just ask Charlie?” Ilya offers. he's such a good friend when it matters.

I nod and then head to get something to drink. y/n still wasn't here and I was getting antsy.

just then I hear Natalie let someone in. I peak around the corner and see y/n. she looks drop dead gorgeous. i’ve never seen her dressed up like that. I think she saw right through me and asked if she had something on her face. 

“no, no, I just have never seen you dressed like that. you look great.” I look to the floor. no way she and Charlie aren't an item. they both love music and they're both flawless people. they're a match made in heaven. 

“well, thank you, cowboy.” she says in a funny southern accent. she was so weird. she came in for a hug and she smelled exactly like when I first met her. I put my hand on the small of her back and for a split second I felt her push more into me. 

“so where can I get a drink?” she asked as we pulled apart.

“a drink?” I ask

“yes, i’ve had a bizarre day and I need a drink.”

Im about to ask her what she means when I hear Charlie from behind me 

“hey, babe, you're late.” he says to y/n as he pulls her into a hug. she almost looks uncomfortable. “hey Charles, how are you?” 

“i’m great, i’ve had several drinks and im thinking much clearly-er now”

“I can smell that” she chuckles

I hand her her favorite drink and ask her if she finished the song. after a short conversation Charlie pulls her to the couch where some other friends are doing karaoke. she's basically sitting on his lap and laughing. I grab my camera and record a little outside trying to not think about it.

I honestly think drunk Charlie has forgotten about our conversation from earlier. which i’m relieved because sometimes I just need good ol Charlie and not this new one that was in love with me. sure he's a little touchy but we were always close like that. 

“alright I promised David I would perform an unreleased song tonight. come on I want you to hear it.” he grabs my hand pulls me up. I have a gut feeling I don't want to be here for it.

David set up the mic outside and everyone found a seat. David sat next to me with camera in hand. 

“alright alright” Charlie starts. “hopefully I don't forget the lyrics since i’m a little buzzed.” the audience laughed. “but this song means a lot to me, and I wrote it with someone in mind. someone who has changed my life for the better and made me a better man.”

oh god, please don't say my name 

“y/n. you are everything to me. I wouldn't be able to be who I am today without you.”

everyone looks to me as the music starts. a love song. i place my head in my hands and David nudges me. “you ok?” he whispers.

“can you please get me out of here?” he nods his head and stands up. Charlie is looking down at his guitar lost in his music. I feel bad leaving but how could he not take no as an answer? I follow David out the door and my head is down in shame. he closes the patio door and turns to me. “what is going on? I thought you guys were dating?” 

“oh god, not you too.” I groan. “just please I need to be anywhere but here right now. fast.”

“okay. let’s go.”

we go to his garage and he looks at me. 

“you said fast!” he shrugs as he opens the passenger Ferrari door for me. I laugh with my head thrown back “true. but im going to need a jacket or blanket.”

“here, use mine.” he took off his hoodie and handed it to me. I hopped in the car and we were off.

“anywhere in mind?” he asks as we pull out of the neighborhood.

“nope,” I smile. “im kinda hungry though”

“alright,” he turns the car at the light. “then we’re gonna make this worth our while. I know an overly expensive place with great burgers.” 

I laugh at him as my hair blows in the wind “yes! lets spend all your money!” I lift my arms and scream. David just laughs at me. we speed down the highways. ive never felt so free. 

we finally arrive to the place and get seated.

“so do you wanna tell me why we left my party now?”

“i’m sorry by the way. I didn't mean to drag you from your party but...” I look down and pick at my napkin “Charlie confessed his feelings for me this afternoon.” David looked at me confused. 

“isn't that a good thing?” he asked.

“not if I don't feel the same way.” I sigh and David looks surprised. “I was very clear about my feelings- or lack of. but he had been hitting on me all night and then the song. I know he was drunk but im really worried for my friendship with him.” 

“I can't believe my ears.” he said almost laughing. “you, y/f/n, don't like the guy who seems like he was sent down from the heavens for you?” 

“nope. he just isn't my type I guess, I don't know. I never really thought of him that way and I don't want to.”

“wow, no one will be up to your standards will they?” David laughs as he takes a drink.

“the right guy will be.”

perfect timing. the waitress comes over with our food. we thank her and get eating. he was right. best. burgers. ever! 

I moan as I take another bite.

David looks me up and down with his cheeks full of burger and chuckles. “okay, y/n, calm down. it isn't no Charlie puth.”

I gasp and throw a fry at him playfully, laughing. “no... no it is not!” we both laugh harder. as we finish up David pays despite my best efforts and we head to my house so he can drop me off. the car ride was fun, we listened to all the hits and sang our hearts out. we got tons of funny looks, but nothing mattered. I grabbed his vlog camera he threw to the side and recorded him singing and then popped myself into frame and had the camera aimed at both of us. our hair was crazy and the night was wearing down on us but it didn't matter. we were just happy to be alive. 

as we pulled into my driveway and David put the car in park, I looked to him. “you wanna walk me to my door?” 

“already on it.”

he came around and opened the car door for me and walked me up to my door. 

“thank you for tonight. it was like out of a movie. I really needed it.” I was talking softly now since it was the dead of the night and the only thing heard was the crickets. 

“anytime, y/n.” David also said softly. he kept looking to my lips which made my heart beat faster every time. I know I said I didn't need a guy, but he just looks too good. 

“and congrats on your show, I'm really proud of you.” I step closer. 

“thank you, congrats on staying single another night.” he joked but had his hands gently placed on my forearm. 

“its still early.” I whisper closer to his face now. I can feel his breath and he can feel mine. my heart is going a million beats a minute and the butterflies in my stomach are in a tornado.

“I can't write a song about you, but I can buy you more expensive burgers.”

I laugh leaning my head on his shoulder. “that's all a girl needs anyways.”

he laughs too but gently. I look up at him and his eyes are locked on mine. he places a hand on my cheek and then lower to my neck. I take a sharp breath in and connect our lips. his lips are soft, sweet, and gentle. I pull my arms up around his neck and deepen the kiss. I feel his hands slide down my back to just above my ass. I move my head to the side and open my mouth gently. he knows what to do and opens his mouth too. I feel his tongue dominate my mouth. he retracts and I close my mouth only to bite his bottom lip and then pull away. I let go and we put our foreheads together breathing heavily. 

“I could do that again.” he says.

“wanna come inside?” I whisper, my hands now playing with his hairs at the end of his neck.

“best party ever.” he laughs and I pull him inside. I don't know what im supposed to tell Charlie. the heart wants what it wants?
