JUST MERCY: IT SHOWED HOPE
Tumblr media
BY Y
A racial, unfair and devastating movie that takes place while people are awaiting the electric chair, the death penalty... A movie inspired to show the movement of those who were unfairly convicted yet unfairly or wrongfully represented in the court of law. The movie titled Just Mercy directed by Destin Daniel Cretton was released in 2019. This movie received much recognition with nominations such as the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role, BET Award for Best Movie, NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Breakthrough Role in a Motion Picture, and NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Writing in a Motion Picture.
After graduating from Harvard University, actor Bryan Stevenson led his way to Alabama to help those who were awaiting years with no advocate on their side. He wanted to defend those who were on death row, sentenced to die with either not enough supporting evidence to prove their “guiltiness” or just sentenced with no reasoning behind it. Throughout the years of him working, Bryan faced racism as well with legal political scheming as he attacked the cases of people on death row lives.  A specific moment that stood out to me was when Bryan took his first ever trip down to the jail to deliver news to a person in prison. He told the person that he would no longer be executed this year, which was the best news the person had ever received while being on death row because not only can his family come visit him but  he will no longer die. This moment stood out to me because it showed hope, the way the his face lit up made me feel so bad it made me feel sympathy.
Although this film didn't have the best quality or best up to date trending outfits or songs, it was based off of a true story. I personally recommend this movie 100% to anyone to show how unfair the justice system is, to show how one’s color can detect what they will be doing for the rest of their lives. 5/5 stars.

If you want to find a good movie to watch to educate yourselves in black lives matter, watch Just Medcy. Amazon prime has made it free to rent. You can also read the book. The author/ main character just so happens to be from my home town.

Just Mercy (2019)
Tumblr media
You practically go into Just Mercy knowing you’ll like it. A young, idealistic black lawyer choosing to set up a practice in Alabama to fight for the wrongfully convicted? You're guaranteed powerful emotions as our protagonist faces off against a corrupt, racist system and since they hardly ever make movies about people who fail… you’ll get a good serving of righteous anger before the conclusion replaces your outrage with joy. Certain aspects of Just Mercy are formulaic but this real-life story is shining a light on an important issue so you won't mind.
In 1986, Alabama, Walter McMillan (Jamie Foxx) is wrongfully arrested for the murder of a white woman, put on trial and swiftly condemned to death. Hope fades until attorney Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan), an attorney committed to fighting for those placed on death row unjustly, takes a look at the case.
Multiple pictures could be made about Bryan Stevenson's exploits but director Destin Daniel Cretton (who co-wrote the screenplay with Andrew Lanham) focusses primarily on a single case with a couple of side stories to give you an idea of how big the problem he's tackling is. The film seeks to honor Stevenson, which is perhaps why the character comes off as a bit one-dimensional. It would've been nice to see a little bit more of him in his downtime to understand what he does when he isn’t practicing. You get that with Jamie Foxx’s portrayal of Walter McMillian. He’s a victim but is neither simple nor perfect. Death row has drained all hope from him, making the first opponent Stevenson has to defeat the very man he seeks to save.
The supporting cast is also strong, with Brie Larson and Timothy Blake Nelson standing out. In the obligatory "real-person epilogue", you see what the real-life Ralph Myers looked like and Nelson got him down to a tee. Larson? She doesn’t have that big of a part but her scenes pack a punch.
The enjoyment you get from a story like this is measured by how close to your boiling point it brings you. No one likes to hear about the state-sanctioned murder of innocents but in a safe environment like this one, you relish in mentally writing down the names of the judge, the sheriff, the DA, etc. who allowed the injustice we see to take place just in case you happen to bump into them one day - they better pray you don't. The story deals with racism but it's more complicated than just "these people good, these people bad". There are obvious villains but there are shades of gray too. Particularly with the side stories, the answers aren't clear-cut.
Just Mercy sits somewhere between a truly life-altering experience and a crowd-pleaser. Much could be said about the death penalty but by keeping its focus on Bryan Stevenson's work and his environment, you come to your own conclusions. You'll be moved, you'll enjoy yourself. (Theatrical version on the big screen, January 8, 2020)

Today started off with a buzz. I jumped from ministry to work to cooking to connecting with friends...and then this: a group of our BEING family decided to go see Just Mercy, the film about Bryan Stevenson and the @eji_org I was deeply moved. Tears flowed. My heart leapt numerous times. And I left filled with hope and with a renewed sense of purpose as a filmmaker. These are precisely the types of films I want to make, the types of stories I want to tell. @michaelbjordan and @iamjamiefoxx did an incredible job carrying the weight of their characters. Michael B. has found himself in an interesting spot - to be afforded so many monumental roles, and it’s a joy to watch him grow in his greatness. Jamie has always been a fave of mine. His biopic work in Ray still leaves me breathless. I’m so glad I got to see this with the fam. Even our time processing afterward was so fulfilling and charging. You can’t walk away from a film like that and not want to talk and move your emotions around in you and through you so you can make sense of life and calling and responsibility as humans. Bryan Stevenson will truly go down as one of the greatest heroes of our day. Let us send him his roses while he breathes on this side of heaven! I am forever grateful for his sacrifice, grit, and courage. He is what so many of us dream to be...a man of virtue and justice and truth. My hat is off to you. May we all find our deepest convictions and pursue them at the level of being willing to die for them. The world will have no other choice but to change for the better. #justmercy #eji #bryanstevenson #racism #hope #justice #deathrow #redemption https://www.instagram.com/p/B7NoqGunQjL/?igshid=1gncavzphi6r0

Repost (60secdocs) • • • • • • Lawyer Bryan Stevenson’s career took an unusual direction after a judge asked him not to take on the case of Walter McMillian, a man wrongly accused of murder. Known by dozens of witnesses to be innocent, McMillian was initially sent pre-trial to Alabama’s Death Row without even a conviction. Seeking to challenge the biases he’d witnessed against the poor and minorities, and to empower the wrongfully convicted, Stevenson didn’t listen to the judge -- and took the case on. Today, he runs the Equal Justice Initiative (eji_org) and has freed 100+ people from unjust convictions. The powerful true story of real-life hero Bryan Stevenson, JUST MERCY is in theaters everywhere January 10th.
