I feel like if Kai had a partner who introduced him to some modern music he would be into the band cigarettes after sex

oooh okay, so admittedly i had never listened to this band before getting this ask, so i immediately went and listened to most of their discography! after that, i can confidently agree he would be a fan.

no warnings below, the "keep reading" feature is only there to divide the long-ish post!

first of all, i love the idea of him being with someone who introduces him to all the great music he missed out on. he'd probably be so happy to hear something other than pre-1994 music, and would definitely lean towards that grunge sound. he still loves a lot of his 90s music, but is excited to hear what the new decades have brought up.

you'd be equally excited to play it for him, because it's one of your favorites, and matches his vibe. maybe you put it on as background music, driving in the car or while you're cooking. at first, he just enjoys the tune, but then he really listens to the lyrics.

maybe, also, you play it for him when he has trouble sleeping because of nightmares keeping him up. sometimes it works immediately, but sometimes he just stares at the ceiling and listens. on those nights, whether or not he falls asleep, he's able to relax.

i can see him kinda staring at the wall and just letting the lyrics melt into his brain. some of the songs bring him back to his childhood & he is reminded of the pain it brought. some songs make him think of you & how much he loves you & values the relationship the two of you share.

also, a lot of people have told me "seven" (taylor swift) reminds them of kai's childhood, to which i completely agree. but i was listening to "apocalypse" (cigs after sex) while driving home from work the other day and picked out these lyrics,

sharing all your secrets with each other, since you were kids

sleeping soundly with the locket that she gave you, clutched in your fist

and felt like they related the lyrics in "seven," which then relates back to kai. once i get more into this band, i may come back to this post and drop more songs / lyrics that really stick out to me about him!

HISTORY;

Growing up, it was her, her mother, her brother Peter and her father. When she was three, her mother left them, leaving her father to be a single one even though he was struggling with an alcohol addiction, making it hard for him to be present even when he tried to be. So, it left five year old Peter to do his best on taking care of her.

Peter and Parker were as thick as thieves the older she got. It was clear he was protective and someone who was willing to throw hands to anyone who even looked at her wrong.

In high school, she thrived in being a social butterfly, she was kind and talked to pretty much anyone no matter what their what their social circle was. School was one of her favorite places to be because it got her out of the house away from her father.

She was on the cheering leading and was a member of the track team; both of these hobbies were passions of hers, it was her way of being lost in something so she didn't have to think about the things at home.

Dare nights were the most fun; she liked the way everyone came together to hang out and bond. It was until the night Chris took a dare, jumping into that water and never resurfacing.

It was terrifying and difficult to live with the secret of what that night did to all of them. She went forth, graduating and moving into college.

Peter ended up leaving town after dare night, needing to life his life in freedom and leaving Parker behind. It was something she understood but deep down she couldn't bring herself to leave their father who had been trying to get sober since the news of Christopher's death hit the town.

About a year into college, her father was diagnosed with cancer. She ended up dropping out of college and moving back into her childhood home to help him out. She ended up getting two jobs, one at the local bookstores and one of the bars at night. It was the only way to keep up with the hospital bill payments.

CONNECTIONS;

christopher wilder — they were teammates on the track team, she used to hang out with him after school. she thought he was a super neat guy and his death was harder than she would ever admit. it haunts her sometimes at night, wondering if there was something she could have done to prevent it.

river calloway — high school sweetheart, they were together from sophomore to senior year. he's pretty much the one who got away since he pushed her away after the scandal over his father came out. she tried so hard to pretend that losing him wasn't hard on her but it in fact was.

cherry amin — her ride or die; the two of have been thick as thieves their whole lives and she wouldn't be where she is today without them.

kai wilder — the two have had tension for years, something parker didn't even think twice about when she was with river but it's always bubbled to the surface when it wasn't supposed to... little does she know the tension will remain.

zeppelin cardoso — they've been friends for years; they are practically attached to the hip and lately their friendship has been blurred by their hook ups. zep has feelings and parker is completely oblivious to them.

michael geary — have hooked up before, this hook up was one of the ones to rattle her because she thought maybe there could have been something here but clearly that wasn't the case.

childhood friends — friends she grew up with, her little circle. she's pretty much a friendly person so she tends to build them up. she's loyal and will do anything for those she cares about.

hook ups/exes — she tries not to get into relationships because of the broken heart she got in high school. so, she usually sticks to hook ups. these can go either way, i'm totally down for whatever.

You hit play, and the face of the weird... influencer? appears on screen. You have this vague idea that you were going to watch something else. But your 'watch later' playlist now consists of three hundred videos, and the electronic noise of non-stop brainless entertainment makes you dizzy and zombie-like. You have a strong urge to log off, close the laptop and look out the window, but this guy's face glues you to the screen. For some reason seeing him in this format in 4K feels insidious, like he's a danger not only to you but also to others. Whoever watches. Like he's somehow connected to snuff... your brain, decomposing from all of the internet commotion, tired with endless sounds and buzzwords, feels physically tired. You rub your face. He is just like the others, has a Youtube channel where he babbles away about his business which nobody asked for. Another attention seeker, full of himself in the idea that people will stick and reflect on his miserable life.

He looks like a pop corn American movie embodied. White shiny teeth, glistening eyes, tiny dimples on his cheeks. A shirt you're sure you saw in Crop recently. Everything a teenage girl needs. Apalled, you contemplate how many of his followers actually have a crush on him just because he represents their Youtube dream. Neat, smily, white guy who gives you an idea that the world exists in a shiny rectangle.

You're immersed in your thoughts until your ear catches something off - that meaning, something actually interesting. His voice buzzes with excitement.

"The last time I told you about hell. But you asked me about, like, whether I have normal - real - stories. Well, I do, and I can even tell you about some of my art. Actually, I do it all the time. You know, I write songs in my dreams all the time", he fidgets in his place like a kid. He can't sit straight and is constantly moving his torso, his hands, as of hypnotizing you. He looks like he watches himself on the screen with one eye, and acts very well, actually. Not the most typical narcissistic type, but the well hidden one. He sure admires himself, but looks cool doing it. You start questioning yourself whether fifteen minutes of this bullshit will make you crush on him just a little.

"Yeah, and it's always something, you know... like I would call it cosmic confusion. So you know how there's cosmic horror? That, but confusion. I get these very soft, ambient melodies, which I don't like very much by the way, but my girlfriend does".

Gasp. Followers lost. You never say you have a partner if you have that kind of smile that holds your whole channel together.

"And the lyrics are like puzzles that I can't seem to gather together. It's been going on for years. What if I'm dreaming a whole discography that's a mysterious code at the same time? And of course when I wake up I completely forget, like, ninety percet of that. Only remnants, but they qickly escape my head. But!" he yells out, making you jump a little, "recently I got this huge idea... I started recording myself on my phone so that if I ever meet a very cool musician, I can play it to them, and they will write the music for me, and I'll... anyway, listen to this".

He takes out his phone and reaches the microphone. The space of the audibe field is filled with his sleepy voice, singing some gibberish, missing every possible note as if on purpose. You instinctively switch off, drowning in memories. Actually, that happened to you too. You dreamt of a black room with a yellow chair in the middle that played music. It was... surprisingly like... what's his name... you look at the name of the channel again - CovenMaster - Jesus - said. Cosmic confusion, like you're lost, but you're not scared because the dimension you got stuck in is too eerie for human brain.

And the only line that was in this song that you remembered to this day was,

When's the boy coming back?

You look back at him, and now he doesn't seem Disney foolish. He looks straight at you from your screen, listening to the end of his ugly song.

"There", he says quietly, "now you know I'm a genius. You can't match me". There's a flicker of well-masked humor in this, like you're supposed to be in on the joke.

"And most importantly, you can't pin me down. I go up every time, don't I?"

Against all reason, you nod, like somebody is standing behind you and has a hand on your head.

"The dark abyss of oblivion, the hell, nothing can hold me for long".

There's silence.

"And?" you ask out loud.

"Oh, it's another one, the other song I didn't record. Jeez, I should really head to SoundCloud", he mumbles. In a second his face lights up, and everything is the same again.

"Anyway, today I wanted to tell you about how I invented a new type of slime! I heard kids were crazy about it!"

You sigh and reach out to close your laptop. Not just click away from the page, but close it completely, to not see any flat screen.

"Wait! Okay, okay", he snaps suddenly. You freeze in front of him.

"Don't go just now, I gotta tell you something", CovenMaster has his palm outstretched and looks straight at you.

You keep silent, he does, too, for a couple of seconds. The shivers run down your shoulders and arms.

"This video is sponsored by Cheetos", he smiles widely, like a prankster. You groan and slap your laptop closed, with such force that you feel sorry immediately, fearing for the screen.

You get up and go to your window to look out the street. A typical nice neighborhood in Ohio, who wouldn't want to live here? The houses around are so familiar, the cars of neighbors roll patiently down the road. Muffled music playing somewhere a house away.

Everything is perfect, and you're glad. But the question still remains,

When's the boy coming back?

🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately?

sometimes, yes! especially if it's a fic that i'm very specifically trying to get a song's vibe to. like blood on my shirt, heart in my hand is the literal reason why teeth by 5 seconds of summer ended up being my top song on spotify wrapped this year because i looped it so many damn times to get the vibes just right with that fic lol. and i've listened to coast by hailee steinfeld an obscene amount of times in the planning for (you guessed it) coast lol plus i have a full playlist i made for that fic i've listened to a bunch. you got the antidote i sometimes loop daylight by harry styles bc it's where the title comes from. put us on ice i have a short little playlist of a few songs that are reg's skate programs! so it varies, but ultimately, yes is the answer lol.

his brother moved out as soon as he turned 18, leaving link behind with their mother another three years in which they endured even more gaslighting and fighting with her. he did try so hard to see her in the way a child is supposed to see their mother, but that was too hard to hold onto the more they grew older. as for his brother, he hasn’t seen him so much since, and hasn’t quite forgiven him for leaving him behind so quickly. this is where he got his “people are temporary” mindset

learned from all her lying, learned how to fight back against her — everything that she showed him growing up molded him into the person he was today (derogatory). at a young age, link was able to mirror other people and allow them to hear what they wanted to hear in order to get his way, and to get by in his life. to him, it was about survival — but how long would he use that excuse for?

had an old, but still functioning, camera and mostly kept to himself, realizing he really enjoyed taking pictures and got better and better at it over time.

learned how to become independent at a very young age and that the world wasn’t going to do you any favors, applied to colleges on his own. luckily, he was an intelligent kid and had really good grades, which got him an academic scholarship at ogden — without that, he would have never been able to go.

moved into housing, got a job as a cashier and as a tattoo artist at the record store to pay that one off since it wasn’t part of his scholarship.

met greer, became suspiciously close to her despite their vast differences. they hung out with her crowd a lot more, and put those skills he learned in high school to use. link became a mirror to almost everyone at ogden, and climbed his way to the top through gaslighting, gatekeeping, and girlbossing (but in the male manipulator way)

they still feel like no one really truly knows who they really are, and that they need to put on a face for everyone. link fully believed that if they were going to be themself 100% of the time, they would be cast out and despised — if this boy loved himself don’t u think he would be healthy ???? damn.

ON THE OUTSIDE, link is a smug, sarcastic, witty guy who seems to be able to fit into most groups that he interacts with. a good number can probably see through his bullshit, but he’ll keep denying it. fake it till you make it is his motto, and it’s worked out well for him so far — it seems to have worked out great with greer. it honestly depends on who they’re talking to — they’ll either be a grade A dickhead, or the nicest boy you’ll ever meet, or someone who’s really into you. but whatever it was, it was almost always a performance.

ON THE INSIDE, he’s extremely smart, and in reality, is still just a kid who’s looking for someone to have his back the way that no one in his family ever did. his issue is that he wants someone to lean on so badly, but refuses to let anyone close enough for that to happen. he still feels abandoned by his brother, and unsupported by his mother... and that’s the kind of thing that he desperately needs but will make it extremely hard for anyone who tries — he trusts absolutely no one. all of his moves, everything he does and everything he says, are carefully calculated and crafted. he looks at people as a vessel for him to get to what he wants… attention, feeling in control, playing with people like puppets before they did that to him first.

OVERALL HES KIND OF EVIL DONT TRUST HIM

their moral compass has been fucked up their whole life — for example, the camera he has that they’ve had their entire life was actually stolen. and he’s not opposed to stealing / shoplifting some more. they’re definitely comfortable lying to people but also comfortable with telling certain people exactly how he felt about them and what he thought about them to their face, if he had nothing to gain from them.

he’s a closeted nerd. if they weren’t studying journalism, they would probably be doing something that had to do with astrophysics, but imposter syndrome is strong within this one.

he’s a lil emo gothy punky mf. some mix between all three, and it shows in their wardrobe and aesthetic (see pinterest board). nu metal whore!

THE ONLY TIME you will see link being genuinely happy and most himself is when he visits his aunt, his mother’s sister, and her wife. sometimes it feels like she was the only person he had left in the world, and she had decided to take him in after witnessing all that shitshow with his mom and brother.
