i decided to watch drifting home on netflix to accompany me during breakfast and oh my god am i sobbing right now. i didn’t end up finishing my food because i was crying so much :,,)

the story and the characters are just so good and the visuals are just absolutely gorgeous. the movie really showed how someone can struggle with feeling they belong or if they’re even doing anything right,, especially when everything seems to go wrong. it’s also about grief and letting go of long time guilt. the bond between friends even when you don’t get along with each other at that moment, the care and determination to keep them safe, really makes up for some emotional scenes. there’s definitely comedic characters and moments to make up for it all for sure! keep in mind they’re all elementary school students :,,) some physically and emotionally tough kids for sure.

i believe this one is done by the same studio that did a whisker away which is also one of my favourite comfort films.

definitely prepare your tissues. or not. just maybe don’t salt your food with tears like i did.

Drifting Home

I’ve just finished watching Drifting Home and i am absolutely shattered. I cried like 5 times?? 

The whole movie just felt so? I don’t know how to describe it. It’s just, it hurt so much but it also made me feel happy? The movie felt like a dream idk. And all the characters are so good, like actually, all of their friendships made me sob in the best way possible. Especially Natsume, Kousuke and Noppo’s bond???? It was so heart wrenching, like?? Genuine shivers. 

The story in itself is also REALLY interesting. The whole concept of an entire building suddenly floating on the sea and no one know how it happened? And everyone seems to see stuff from their memories? And again, the relationships between the characters are so well done. Like, they do act and feel like 11 year olds, and that just made it 100 times more intense? methinks. Like they’re so young, they’re literal babies. /affectionate

And also can we talk about the ANIMATION????? Absolutely fucking gorgeous, i’ll never get over it. It had this Studio Ghibli atmosphere in some moments, especially this one!!

The color palettes, the lights, everything!!

Honestly i suck at reviews, simply because most of the time i can’t describe how i’m feeling, but yeah, this movie was so good, genuienly. It made me feel so sad for so many reasons but a good kind of sad? Is that even a thing? 

YES also the character designs??? They all look so cute ahh! My favorite one was definitely Noppo! Second fav might be Taishi?? THEY ALL LOOK GREAT IT’S HARD TO CHOOSE!!!!

Btw i’m pretty sure Yuzuru’s voice actor is also Izuku’s??? WHICH MADE ME MELT especially since they kinda have the same personality?? 

Um idk what else to add haha. I could add on about everyone’s relationship with each other and the whole found family trope that i absolutely adore, and how they’re all blushing all the time which is also super adorable!!! And uh Noppo pains me like i love him so much he’s my blorbo!!!! He needs to be hugged. THE LOVE HE HOLDS FOR KOUSUKE AND NATSUME PAINS ME SO MUCH!!! It’s soooo i don’t even know anymore. I think i should stop writing or i’ll go on forever and no one will want to read all that!! Sorry!!

Shinobu’s stance with the situation being that it does not fit her “girl next door” image is absolutely hilarious. Also, notice that the guys were rewritten to simply THINK perverted thoughts rather than voice them. So, a bit toned down there. Same with Ryuunosuke’s clothing situation being a bit less extreme. Great chomp though.

Okay so in the wake of the new UY All Stars trailer here are some wild conclusions I am jumping to:

It looks like the reboot will be including episodes from the earliest introduction chapters, though earlier articles said it would only be adapting new material. This is probably for the best to introduce the new audience to the characters, but the reason I’m a little worred is that the first <50 chapters are not very good, mainly just bc it was the Takahashi's first series and she kept trying different things to see what would stick. The early chapters also play issues of consent even more casually and insensitively than the later chapters, iirc.

That being said, it looks like they are moving roughly chronologically through the series/following the manga still, since Ten is not yet present. He first appears in ~chapter 60 of the manga, but episode 2 of the 80s anime. Gives me hope they aren’t going for the same vibe as the old anime. They also appear to be introducing characters like Sakura and Mendo over the aliens (Rei, Benten, Oyuki, Kurama) despite the aliens appearing earlier in most cases. I actually think this is a good choice because comparatively they are more minor characters, and if the goal is to condense the early manga material, to eventually get to new stories, focusing on the most necessary characters makes sense.

In the trailer we have what appear to be bits from chapters 1 (the race), 4 (Sakura’s introduction story), 15 (the yellow ribbon), and 22 (Mendo’s introduction). 1, 4 and 22 make sense to adapt early on, but I am a tad apprehensive bc of the content of chapter 15. Also I know it’s petty but even if that chapter is used, I do not want to see the stormtroopers much after. Their exclusion was something I was excited for, and I’m hoping this series goes the way of the 2008 OVA, relegating them to background characters soon even if they show up in these early chapters. Give me Kosuke!!

I am HELLA hype for Lum’s hair though. Maintaining the classic look but going rainbow when she uses her powers is a great touch.
