klance soccer au
the paladins minus shiro play on the altea lions varsity team
keith is a centerback: everyone thinks hes a striker when they first meet him because Look At Him. but hes so centerback. the last line of defense, willing to injure himself beyond repair for his team, steady. strong. a pillar. co-captain. holds the record for most yellow cards.
allura is their center striker: no one would expect a pretty, effervescent girl like allura to be a striker, but on the turf she is quick, effective, and ruthless. lefthand top corner shots are her deadly weapon.
pidge is an outside defender, usually on keith’s right side. shes fast and tough, excellent at shielding and forcing opposing teams towards keith. usually comes off with turf burns but shes happy about it.
hunk is their keeper: light on his feet, high jump height. knows when to dive and when to drop to his knees. his nose is slightly crooked from ramming into the side of the goal once or twice. long punts, allowing allura and lance to chase them up the field.
lance is a midfielder, usually out on the wings. he has excellent precision and dribbling skills, but has a tendency to get carded for mouthing off at the ref. him and allura have their give and go down to a science, just one look between the two of them set off a chain reaction that ruins lives. co-captain.
they all play in semi-unison with shiro and coran coaching, but when allura’s season ends unexpectedly due to a broken ankle, their center striker position is open for the taking. and guess what. keith and lance want that spot so bad it might actually kill them.

A post about Freddy Carter in the 2016 play CIRCA, with some info about the play in here too.
If you repost pics from this elsewhere please remember to:
a) credit the photographer/photo source
and
b) mention me as having found them (I'm purpleyindom on insta if anyone reposts there) since it took a fair bit of time/effort to research this play.
Photo sources: tratcliffe15, 2 -__circa & 3 - the VAULTS performance crowdfunder page and others sources mentioned later
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The play was written by Tom Ratcliffe who is friends with Freddy - he was at Oxford Drama School with Freddy, as well as starring in "The Wars of the Roses" (Rose Theatre) with him in 2015.
CIRCA was first performed as a sell-out research & development showing at the Old Red Lion Theatre, Islington in November 2015. After that a crowdfunding campaign was started to raise money for putting on the world premiere of the play in Amsterdam.
10 minutes of CIRCA were also performed as part of Wildcard Theatre's Christmas fundraiser December 1st 2015, with Freddy playing The First Love and Tom Ratcliffe playing The Young Man, and Jamie Jackson directing. Photographer: Ali Wright

The Amsterdam performance happened 8th January 2016 as part of Festival Contact at the Theater de Meervaart. Some behind the scene shots + some more from the performance itself (EDIT: the lefthand side sofa pic I'd included is actually from the 2015 London performance instead - the righthand side one is the Amsterdam set).

Following Amsterdam, another crowdfunding campaign was started to raise money for the plays UK première as part of 2016 Pride in London. Here's pics for the readthrough, rehearsals & preview show. Freddy plays The First Love and The Younger Man.

The play ran June 21st-25th, directed by Joe Allan, performed at The VAULTS, Waterloo. As mentioned by a londontheatre1, the actors changed into dark clothes to double up as stagehands like in pic 5. As far as I can tell there's no public recordings of the play, just a very brief insta reel of applause for one of the shows.

CIRCA had another run in March 2019 - for 4 weeks this time - again at The Old Red Lion Theatre, with a smaller cast of 5: Antony Gabriel, Daniel Abelson, Jenna Fincken, Joseph Rowe, and Thomas Flynn. Maybe CIRCA will return sometime potentially but it seems unlikely it would be with Freddy again. I very much wish I could see it tbh but I'll probably have to satisfy myself buying the script sometime.

For anyone curious about the play more generally, Tom Ratcliffe has interviews about the 2019 run linked on his website under 'Press' further down on his writer's CV page. There are reviews for the 2016 Vaults performance here. CIRCA is also published, and there were some quotes from the play released as part of promo tweets - they're behind the read more.
"That’s what everyone says isn't it? Gay men shag everything. Disease and all that. My mum, when I came out, the first thing she said to me was ‘don’t get AIDS'...But things are different now. They’ll be different for us."
"Have you ever played the Game of Life?"
"Most people get to be happy with just one person. I don't see why I should have it any different."
"You have this thing where you don't let it define you... I'm not going to apologise"
"Everybody loves a drag queen but nobody will ever love a drag queen"
"No one sleeps with one person forever. You can't be so naive."
"This must be a dream."

Assigning squishmallows to the Wonderful Ones + Immorta & Vorkken
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reasoning under the cut
From top lefthand corner: Cardinal/Wonder Red, Peacock/WonderBlue, Apple/WonderGreen, Fox/WonderPink, Cat/WonderWhite, Lion/WonderYellow, Penguin/WonderBlack, Cardinal/Vorkken, Pink Cat/Immorta
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Octopi is a symbol of creativity and overcoming challenges, a major theme of the game. Who better than the lead hero to have this plush? Being a teacher and all Wonder Red is already pretty smart, can think outside the box and gets everyone to cooperate for the best results. Octopi is also said to show willpower coincidentally Red's civilian name is Will
Wonder Blue is one of the most prideful members of the team. He also likes to show off his power and good looks, similar to a male peacock. Peacocks represent protection and sisterhood; Blue learned the importance of brotherhood and protecting others. The irony is the peacock squishmallow is actually a girl named Priscilla 😂
Apple represents plus the irony of a fresh fruit for a charcater obsessed with sweets (it's even said in canon that junk food is his forbidden fruit)
I was going to give Wonder Pink a cat but a better animal for her would be a Fox. Because of her beauty, teasing and temper, a fox embodies those traits. But is also means protection, which we see in her career as a hero and her caring behavior towards Luka. And tbh I know she got a shirt to match the tiedye patterns!
On the other hand, a cat fits Momoe's personality perfectly. Specifically a white cat. Besides symbolizing good luck something the team had a lot of it also represents purity and Momoe is one of the least flawed members of the team.
Wonder Yellow's strength doesn't just come from his muscles but from his heart. So a lion best fits that. Lions also go with military power and it seems that Wonder Yellow has that sort of aesthetic. Plus it would be so cliche to give the Russian guy a bear and it doesn't fit him anyways.
It was challenging finding a squishmallow for Wonder Black that isn't a cat or a bat. But I figured a penguin fits, as that animal symbolizes adaptability, a trait Wonder Black utilizes in his crafts. And being a gamer you have to adapt to whatever level you're playing. Plus the irony of an apathetic person carrying around a cheery lookin toy is freaking hilarious! XD
Now I wanted to make cardinal Wonder Red's plush since it goes with his story, but it fits Vorkken more. Someone trapped by his tragic past and had to learn to let it go.
We got another feline everyone! Immorta would love a cat because of its elegance, but also it is usually a symbol of femininity (her heart motif) and independence.
Tumblr media
BONUS! My self insert Wonder Lavender/Wonder Angel would have a stingray to show her struggles with choosing a path in life but learning to simply experience life; her/my high sensitivity and valuing peace and harmony over blind chaos. Plus I had a stingray squishmallow! Or a unicorn, representing mystery/mystical, purity health and joy, which are also traits my SI have being the "shield" of the core team.

August History and Holidays
In the original 10 month Roman calendar, August was the sixth month with 30 days and was originally named Sextilis. In 8 BC, the Roman Senate rewarded Octavian Augustus a month in his honor.  The founder and first emperor of the Roman Empire, Octavian Augustus selected Sextilis, which under the Julian calendar was the eighth month with the addition of January and February.
Renamed to Augustus, there remained the issue of the month having fewer days than Julius (July). Whether Octavian adjusted the number of days to match that of July is uncertain, but the result left February with 28 days except in a leap year and September and November each gave up a day to October and December to avoid a trifecta of 31 days in a row. For hubris or pride or both, the Julian calendar came to be.
Weather & Seasons
Today, August is the eighth month of the modern calendar with 31 days. It also wraps up the summer months in the Northern Hemisphere and that also includes the Dog Days of Summer. This traditionally hot and humid time lures people to pools and beaches to cool off. In the Southern Hemisphere, winter still reigns.
August’s moon is called the Sturgeon Moon, named after the ancient fish that swim in North America. They were once abundant and easily caught during the heat of August summer.
In the sporting world, the U.S. Open Tennis Championships begin at the end of August while the National Football League kicks off its preseason matchups.
What’s Your Sign?
If you’re born in August, chances are your sign is either Leo or Virgo. Leo represents the lion and Virgo means the virgin and is represented by a maiden or goddess.
August birthdays celebrate with the gladiolus and poppy. Other flowers coming into bloom in August include goldenrod and salvia.

Man, I love this blog...any quotes about wrath and wolves? Please?
Thank you so much. ❤️
That's so lovely to hear, thank you 🖤
On wrath:
"I have love in me the likes of which you can scarcely imagine and rage the likes of which you would not believe. If I cannot satisfy the one, I will indulge the other."
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, dir. Kenneth Branagh (1994)
"I shall take two huge handfuls of his rustling hair as he lies half dreaming, half waking, and wind them into ropes, very softly, so he will not wake up, and, softly, with hands as gentle as rain, I shall strangle him with them."
— Angela Carter, The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories; ‘The Erl-King’
"Grown weary of these sacrilegious thrills / The time will come to tear his breast apart; / My dainty, deadly hands with harpy nails / Can claw their way into his beating heart."
— Charles Baudelaire, Complete Poems; ‘Spleen and Ideal’ from 'Benediction’, tr. Walter Martin
"I have a violence in me that is hot as death-blood. I can kill myself or – I know it now – even kill another."
— Sylvia Plath, from 'The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath'
"There are no bargains between lions and men. I will kill you and eat you raw."
— Madeline Miller, from 'The Song of Achilles'
"Now I will burn you back, I will burn you through,"
— Charlotte Mew, from 'In Nunhead Cemetery', published in 'The New Faber Book of Love Poems', ed. James Fenton
"You have not known horror until I have shown it to you."
— Penny Dreadful, from ‘Resurrection’
"Out of the ash / I rise with my red hair / And I eat men like air."
— Sylvia Plath, Ariel; from ‘Lady Lazarus’
"Aaaagh! This man I hate! / This man who swore eternity in my arms! / Let me live to see him and his bride as broken bodies in the dust of their palace."
— Euripides, from 'Medea', tr. Nicholas Rudall
"Have a care: I will work at your destruction, nor finish until I desolate your heart, so that you shall curse the hour of your birth."
— Mary Shelley, from 'Frankenstein'
"Give me a drill. I will bore holes in his shoes and spy on him as he walks. Eyes beneath the pavement will be watching him. While he sleeps I will trepan the back of his head and with my fingers pull out his dreams of her."
— Jeanette Winterson, from 'Gut Symmetries'
"Like all good storytellers, Hermes knew to save the best for last. One evening, he told me of a trick Pasiphaë had played upon Minos in the early days of their marriage. Minos used to order any girl he liked to his bedchamber in front of her face. So she cursed him with a spell that turned his seed to snakes and scorpions. Whenever he lay with a woman, they stung her to death from the inside."
— Madeline Miller, from 'Circe'
Also - 'Medusa' and 'Havisham' by Carol Ann Duffy
On wolves:
"There is a vast melancholy in the canticles of the wolves, melancholy as infinite as the forest, endless as these long nights of winter …"
— Angela Carter, The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories; from ‘The Company of Wolves’
"I met the wolf alone / And was devoured in peace."
— Edna St. Vincent Millay, from 'The True Encounter'
"Fear and flee the wolf; for, worst of all, the wolf may be more than he seems."
— Angela Carter, The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories; from ‘The Company of Wolves’
"I look up someone grins / you're a bloody feral wolf-face I like you."
— Alice Notley, Disobedience; from 'I suppose this is all a lefthand path'
"We love the wolf. We love the love of the wolf. We love the fear of the wolf. We’re afraid of the wolf: there is love in our fear. Fear is in love with the wolf."
— Hélène Cixous, Stigmata: Escaping Texts; from ‘Love of the Wolf’, tr. Keith Cohen
"They will be like shadows, they will be like wraiths, grey members of a congregation of nightmare; hark! his long, wavering howl…"
— Angela Carter, The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories; from ‘The Company of Wolves’
"They were waiting in a quiet part of the wood for the hunters to appear, when a single wolf passed by their tree. He was the handsomest of his kind, with fine, dark eyes and a pelt the colour of wet slate. He looked up into the tree and addressed the gentleman in a language that sounded like the chatter of water over stones and the sighing of wind amongst bare branches and the crackle of fire consuming dead leaves."
— Susanna Clarke, from ‘Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell’
"The wolf is carnivore incarnate."
— Angela Carter, The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories; ‘The Company of Wolves’
"All stories are about wolves. All worth repeating, that is. Anything else is sentimental drivel."
— Margaret Atwood, from 'The Blind Assassin'

thoughts on fe echoes: shadows of valentia
I lied, and Valenta is next! Tellius who, amirite?
Again, I have a rough idea of what happens in the plot (Celica and Alm have different paths, Celica dies?? but marries Alm I think??? And Faye is a yandere apparently? and apparently Archers are the best class but it can’t be as good as Paladins right. Also I hear the map design sucks ass), but not the details. Normal mode because I’m a chicken and want to experience the story without the gameplay.
Damn the title screen is so good and calming. Also Alm and Celica as children is so cute
I absolutely LOVE the art in this game but sometimes when people are having supports with each other I laugh because Python and Lukas have red and blue colour schemes and look like a rainbow (you know what I mean). Idk but it feels less anime tropey uwu than Kozaki’s art (maybe it’s to do with the sexualisation? I’m not sure) which is a nice fresh air and really great.
The voice direction for everyone is great, especially in the supports. It just reminds me of how much Awakening, Fates, and Three Houses supports pale in comparison honestly (talking on a battlefield vs at peacetime really makes a big difference)
I checked some guides and eventually went Merc Gray, Cav Tobin, Mage Kliff, and Cleric Faye. RIP to Tobin he was useless for a lot of the game because Paladins were nerfed to hell and back with no range (give Javelin on Alm’s side plx)
I left Faye on Celica’s side because I thought Faye would be creepy yandere. But after looking at her support online with Silque I understand her a lot better now and she’s fine. She’s blunt about who she likes but also accepting that Alm doesn’t like her that way.
Also me thinking ‘is Leon... gay?’ throughout the whole game is a mood. Went to read up his supports and was pleasantly surprised.
Overally the supports in this game are fantastic (I think the best lot of all the games), though I wish some were be longer I also think making them longer could have subtracted from their amazingness.
I love Mae and Boey so goddamn much. Their art design, their voice acting, their sarcasm and friendly banter, the two retainers honestly make Celica’s path so good (along with Daddy Saber). Tobin and Gray’s commentary suck ass on the other side. Yes I am a sucker for white haired people. Also Boey is voiced by Dimitri??? man with the 3DS voice quality I couldn’t tell...
Clive was so shit he had 1 Res and kept being killed by enemy teleporting Witches like bruh. He is a good meatshield but unfortunately there are too many Magic units in this game to use him properly. Now Mathilda, that’s where it’s at.
I find Delthea a lil’ bitch, I hate her uppity attitude and god-complex, and she has no right being mean to Luthier. I respect that she shows that it’s implied she does love Luthier but sheesh. Well at least she’s a kid.
Saber is insanely good unit that can kill mages, except he had like no attack in my run so lmao fountains and stat boosters here I come
I actually like Valbar a lot? His backstory of getting revenge but not letting himself feel down was such a refreshing take, and I’d thought he’d be like a Dimitri (or Deen) but apparently not?? Also he held chokepoints really well in the Act he appears in so
Python is my MVP sniper who sniper what sniper everywhere on Alm’s route. He gets to Bow Knight eventually, unlike Leon (rest in peace....). But he get’s killed if he tries to Hunter’s Volley against the final boss because he doesn’t have enough HP..... so he just normal attack’d with the Killer Bow
Alm is stupid broken with Double Lion and 1-3 free bow range without needing to equip a bow. Also he has convoy and can swap weapons freely. He’s just my boss killer but I hope he doesn’t die because you can’t Mila’s Turnwheel that lmao. Also he’s lefthanded!!! Very cool
I’m so sick and tired of Gray’s crit animation filling up my screen stop it he looks so blazed
Something strange happened to me at the start of the game - I kept getting crits so often, even at percentages like 6 or 7 or <10. Weird. Everyone kept getting doubled but still lived because their speed was low but their HP was tanky. I later found out how speed worked in this game, which is weird to say the least. 1 more than enemy causes you to double? Insane.
Everyone’s growth rates all suck in this game it’s so stupid. I didn’t check up anything at all but hell I only get 1-2 stat levels on average. I kept wishing for ATK and SPD because those two are the only stats that matter in the game tbh. DEF is just eh cos Magic units are more of the problem and DEF problems can be solved with Shields anyway. I think Silque once got a 5-6 stat boost upon level up and that was the rarest most joyous moment ever. And when I checked... 0 Res growths, really, game? Clair is basically useless because of this...
Exp gains in this game is also dummy smol, it’s so laughable even with bonus experience
And Hit Rates in this game are ass, but I feel it adds charm to the game, unlike Binding Blade. Game would be too easy otherwise, what with Hunter’s Volley and other broken mechanics.
Man the map is so small but the movement of everyone is small so it checks out
Also idc what everyone says I actually LOVE the map design in the game???? The closed off environment of fortress maps makes me feel like I’m actually storming fortresses and taking them, there’s chokepoints  at cramped doorways, only Archers and Mages with fixed accuracy can get to enemies inside easily but tiles inside make fortresses hard, Fliers can fly over but get stomped by enemy Archers inside (have I mentioned how dank cool height on maps is in this game??), Swamp maps aren’t that bad if you get Saints and Faye’s Physic on the other side (yes I am dumb and put Faye on the other side...).
Even that Desert Fortress level on Celica’s side was fun, you had restricted movement but so did the enemy so you weren’t ganged up as you tried to reach the enemy who had archers inside which you could easily take out with your army of mages.
But also fuck open grassy plain maps with enemy Cavaliers and divided units, YES I’M LOOKING AT YOU BERKUT MAP
Duma’s Gate is Inigo’s map from Awakening! Pretty cool, though I wonder which one was conceived first, with Echoes being a remake and all
I hate roaming monsters on the map though. It’s like Sacred Stones but put to the extreme. I can’t go anywhere without a new monster spawning ffs
Fuck cantors they aren’t hard just difficult to kill
Witch Warp spells are. There. Broken since they can teleport anywhere (bruh) and their targeting UI is weird.
Invoke is so dumb broken on Genny and Silque, the Soldiers get targeted by enemies and Dread Fighters just kill everyone so Cantors aren’t really a problem
Wait wtf you only get back Celica’s people in the endgame? But I haven’t classed everyone into their final class!!! Saber is still a Level 17 Myrmidon and Leon is still a Sniper!!! ......Ok then
That one map in Act 5 where the map is divided into a bottom grassy mountain and an upper mountain and you gotta climb your way to the to the boss? So dank cool when you zoom out. The height difference really got me going ‘wow....’.
Faye and Zeke died in the endgame but they can be revived in the Shrine of revival, so.... lmao
MVPs of my game:
Alm’s Side: Python (bosskiller with Killer Bow Hunter’s Volley), Alm (bosskiller), Silque (Warp + Invoke bro, and Expel), Tatiana (Physic and then Fortify in late game bro also Faye was on Celica’s side lmao I suffered hard for Act 1-2) > Kliff and Luthier (1-3 range with Sagittae are automatically good) > Mathilda (just good bases bro) > everyone else
Celica’s Side: Saber (bosskiller), Leon (bosskiller with a Steel Bow lmao), Genny (Invoke + Physic, and Expel), Faye (Physic Physic Physic Physic) Celica (kinda helping to bosskill?), Mae (Holy crap her Magic and Speed are so good), Boey (just a tank boi) > everyone else
Honestly I feel that the game has a lot of replayability due to gameplay, with dungeon grinding and relatively short maps and Mila’s Turnwheel. I’m already thinking of doing Hard Mode (haven’t done Act 6 yet) with a 100% completion on quests.
Thoughts about the story itself:
When I first saw Fernand, I thought it would be cool if he had an arc and joined us back later. He was misguided but that could be changed. Same for Berkut. With a cool redemption arc. But both definitely should NOT their ‘nobles rule, commoners should stay down’ brushed over when they died. Like seriously, Clive?
I like how Rudolph wasn’t really evil cos ‘all he did was invade to seal Mila’ and he actually loved Alm and that was supposed to be his redeeming point and show he’s not all that evil but... bro. He let Jedah, Nuibaba, and Jerome go free. He didn’t kill Duma first with the Falchion even though Duma is a bigger threat than Mila. He taught Berkut (even though he supposedly cares for Berkut) that strength is everything and led him down a spiralling path. Good intentions but still murder bro
Now that I think about it, he basically did an Edelgard? When Alm killed him he was like ‘aight imma peace out’ but also there’s this true villain you gotta fight, help me clean up my mess, thanks? and died. Really?
I could go on and on about how the villains in this game were well-nuanced but redeemed badly but eh. Overall, the story is good, a great remake that polishes a lot of stuff from Gaiden (as I watched in a YT video), but the plot holes take away from it somewhat.
Prologue is very cute. I love the babies and Mycen killing everything in the way. No Jagen though.... and Act 5 Mycen is sadge
Act 1 is very cool with Lukas’s handsome face a warm welcome to the village. This is when Tobin and Gray start to get annoying though.
Act 2 is Celica with the best 2 characters, Mae and Boey. Oh, and Saber. I dunno why people say Celica is indecisive unlike Alm, I think she’s just fine in the first few Acts. It’s only Act 4-5 when Jedah appears that she gets... truly a bruh moment. Her fight with Alm seems very real as she wants to resolve fighting without Alm having to go out to fight, seeing Alm having unnecessary bloodshed (which is true... given that Rudolf’s motives are complex and probably wouldn’t kill Zofia too much?? idfk man Rudolf has a weird redemption but hey the Echoes writer had to make do man). Her reveal that she actually set out to find Mila to pray for Alm is very beautiful, given that they haven’t met for years lmao.
‘We hire Saber with the Golden Dagger then we take is back’ is just so funny
Alm/Celica’s good luck charm is mentioned once later on and never again. Man
I find it funny that Alm’s plot is about slaying Rigel enemies in a crusade while Celica’s path is just ‘we’re on a journey to Mila’s Temple but eh we can make some detours to kill some pirates while we’re at it’
Come to think of it how can Jedah even enter the Royal Treasury if only those of royal blood can enter? That’s kinda stupid
But HOLY CRAP when you get to the ending and adult Alm and Celica hold hands and walk together in the title screen. The amount of emotional pain and amazement it gave me. Like Echoes was actually a great game (even though it had it’s.... eh moments)
DID GENNY MARRY SABER???? WHY ARE THEIR END CARDS SO MYSTERIOUS ABOUT THEIR S/O BRO
Overall Mae and Boey are the best couple followed by Alm and Celica ig. (Who falls in love and stays that way for so many years? but I digress). Then Clive and Mathilda, which honestly have the best ‘couple working it out’ dynamic between them with each complementing each other’s inferiority complex/validation complex issues. Fernand who. Why does he even have a crush on Mathilda he should have just had a crush on Clive lmao in fact make him bi
I also like how Celica and Alm get a portrait change after Act 4? Really shows that the story takes over a period of time and how they’ve grown. Apparently Alm gets more serious/depressed after killing his father too, when selecting him and such. (Kinda weird for him to feel for a father he’s never met but sure, he’s highly emotional and grew up longing for family even with Mycen ig)
But seriously. No support log in the menu? Really, IS?

The motto Tanem at circenses
True to the motto Tanem at circenses” – “(Give the people) bread and circuses’ , the Roman administration ordered some constructional “improvements” to be made so as to use the theater fully. It was to be adapted for gladiatorial combats. As we know, the ancient Greeks loved sports and built stadiums, whereas the Romans went in for bloody entertainment Holes have been found in the parapet of the first row seats, which served to put up safety barriers and networks. An underground passage passed under the scene, proscene and the orchestra. A vertical shaft led to the surface of this orchestra. Inside must have been installed a hoisting device to lift animals Cor gladiators) to the arena. In the back row there were other holes meant for standing iron poles, to which a skin or textile shed was attached to keep the audience from the sun and rain. The combats with wild animals and the gladiatorial games were free of charge in the Roman Empire. From Philippopolis we have several inscriptions, which mention gladiators. We learn their names, native parts, nicknames and triumphs. A tombstone bears the following text: “Here I lie, Victor the lefthander. My native place is Thessalonica. I was killed by some deity and not by the perjurer Pinas. But let not Pinas boast because my comrade-in-arms Polinic killed him and revenged me. Claudius Tallus erected this tombstone with the money Victor left.”
A large stadium was built in Philippopolis, which rivaled the stadium in the capital Perinthos. It is next to the forum to the northwest, between the hills Taximtepe and Sahattepe. The stadium was most probably built around the middle of the 2nd century and existed till the reign of Constantine the Great (306-337). The northern semicircular part of the facility has been uncovered with presently preserved 13-14 rows of marble seats, which are separated from the field level by a 1.80 m tall podium. At places however the vertical aisles reach the field level. Recently, in another sector were explored straight-line rows along the longitudinal side of the stadium. This sports facility was on two floors and seated more than 20,000. Excavations also unearthed five tall marble pilasters – three of them bear images of Hermes, and two depict Heracles’ attributes (crook, the skin of the Nemean Lion and a quiver) wooden workmanship byzantium. In 214 big sports competitions were organized here with the participation of professional athletes from different parts of the
province and outside of it. Pentathlon was on the program of the games. This included javelin, discus throwing, long jump, wrestling and the most spectacular and perilous contest – pankrateon – a mixture of boxing and wrestling. Everything was organized on behalf of the Thracian koinon on the occasion of the visit of Emperor Caracalla on his way to Asia Minor. The games were called Alexandria- Pythia in honor of Alexander the Great and were organized on the model of the Pythian Games in Delphi. This event was marked by the issuing of various emissions of bronze medallions and coins. The Pythian Games were organized in the city again a little after the middle of the third century.
During the reign of Emperor Elagabal (Heliogabal – 218-222) in 218 the sports games in Philippopolis were renewed but now they were dedicated to the chief deity here – Apollo Kendrisos, and financed by the city administration. We learn of these big sport events not only from the coin emissions but also from the inscriptions found in the city. There were competitions for juniors and for men. Famous athletes came here from Thrace and the neighboring provinces. One tough athlete was 40 times winner in pankrateon (what we today call catch-as-catch-can) and 9 times in the Graeco-Roman style. In such contests were drawn lots. Little plates, couples of them bearing the same letter, were put in a silver cup. Those who drew the same letters played elimination matches. The stadium could have been used for gladiatorial games too.
Religious tolerance accommodates the different
In the city there was a chief temple of the supreme Roman deity – Jupiter (Zeus). On certain holidays sacrifices were offered for the health and prosperity of the Emperor and the citizens of Philippopolis. The local Thracian population worshipped above all their Heros (Thracian Horseman), and Dionysus, who in fact originated in Thrace. In Philippopolis they honored the cult of Eumolp – a mythical Thracian king, after whom the settlement was originally called. Owing to the mixed ethnic composition of the population, deities from the Thraco-Hellenic mythology were worshipped here. Apollo was the favorite. In time, however, he acquired the epithet Kendrisos, which is Thracian.
The goddess Bendida, greatly worshipped in the area, was identified with the Greek Artemis. Asclepius and Hygeia were universally respected health-giving deities. Heracles was the personification of virility and strength. Archaeological explorations in Plovdiv have uncovered the ruins of an interesting cult building, which at the time was in the eastern quarters of the city. In the central room, the prayer hall, two mosaics were found one on top of the other. This shows that the building had undergone several reconstructions.
