Building up colour on a large [60 x 150 cm] drawing of the view from Studenica Monastery in Serbia. Alice falls down the rabbit hole! I did this back in college (quite a while ago at this point), with non-photo blue pencils and my still functioning Staedtler-Mars Marsmatic technical pens, so I apologize for any goofy anatomy. 3 staedtler marsmatic pens and I was only able to fix one....so I created nonsense with it

3 years ago I quit smoking. I didn’t quit because of health reasons, rather, I quit because I had failed on being able to craft smoke ships floating through smoke rings like Gandalf/Olórin. I needed to find another way to earn my place as a member of the Istari. I am still trying. It was at that point I realised just how much time can be saved when you quit smoking anyways. And, thus I found rejuvenated vigour in putting pen and ink to paper (after a period of hibernation that seemed to last an eternity), and concentrated less on creating and moving pixels on a screen.

1 year after quitting, my dad gave me a set of his old Staedtler Marsmatic 700 series pens. He was an artist/creative, something that I am still persevering towards. What wonderful pens they are! Every non-ball point pen piece I’ve created over the last couple years used these pens in some form. They are perfect for those tiny lines and detailing that I very much enjoy doing. Some of those pieces got some attention. ‘Young Hodor’ (ala Game of Thrones) has one and 20th Century Fox used another to promote the Blu Ray/DVD release of Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children via social media. I’ld like to think that those are pretty awesome accolades that could not have been possible without those pens.

My dad transitioned peacefully on the 9th January, 2018, 142 days shy of his 80th year on this plane of existence. Not too bad an innings considering he surpassed the biblical three score and ten. This piece was the last one I completed 5 days prior to his journey onwards. The pen shown is one of those pens that I use on all my drawings (excluding ball point). It’s also my favourite of the multitude of pens that I possess. I dedicate this one to him.
