Sketch dump be upon ye
I was looking through my camera roll for a reference photo and I unearthed these sketches from last year that I did while I was still working my way through watching the UC timeline for Gundam with my old man and I partially forgot that I did these in the first place. My art definitely has developed a bit since then I’ve realised, but it’s nice to look back on regardless.

Alright so.
1: This is likely someone who is doing screenshot redraws from the same images I did that came from a published show that is accessible to millions.
2: Tracing is actually a great way to learn.
Now, credit should be given obviously but there is a huge stigma from folks online about tracing. I can almost promise you that some of your favorite artists out there will look at a work they like and go 'how did they do this?'
Best way to get into the head of another artist? Trace it.
I've done traces of other artists that I admired and honestly I learned a lot from doing so. Did I post these or ever claim them as my own? Absolutely not, that is when you're stealing.
Thousands of professional comic artists, or almost every skilled artist you can think of has traced. This little waltz is like a baby bird taking its first haphazardly drunk steps across a ice pit. We call them screenshot redraws today, but in the fine arts spectrum, they're called Master Studies.

Because you're looking at someone who has already accomplished something and you want to see how they did it, how you can apply it, and how you as an artist can grow.
The beauty of art is that we can take aspects of things we like and add onto our own work. Its an amalgamation of influences that compound together to create the concept we call an artist. I love seeing where people draw their inspiration from.
3: Personally, I think that it's good that this person is taking some steps into digital and learning. Looking at the line weight and the way they use their tools it seems that they're still learning how they want to navigate the digital platform. This is a great way for them to improve an if they had, allegedly, used my images at reference then I'm honored they saw something to admire in it!
The fact that they practiced at all is way more than I can say for others that say they want to improve but don't put the effort in.
4: Now, final point here.
In the future, please do not come to me like this.
I appreciate you trying to give me a heads up, but I'm not going to sit here and reprimand or police people. This kind of message to me feels like a rather deliberate attempt to stir up drama, which if it was not your intention and you genuinely were just looking out for me, I appreciate you trying. The way I see it though, reporting people like this or going after what may very well be kids trying to learn creates a toxic mentality that I don't want anything to do with. I've been there, done that, and been on the receiving end of that nastiness.
I've learned a lot through my time online and the big lesson sometimes is just to let people do what they're gonna do.
Seriously though, who ever did this has a very cute style. I like the smile headshot there in the middle.

Hi everybody!  
It's May (my birth month!) so it's time for another site update and to thank all our wonderful Patreon supporters!
First, we're still updating the site layout to be more user friendly.  Mobile users should have noticed that the site is a lot easier to navigate and no longer has the floating widget that blocks most of the image.  The desktop web browser layout is next to get an overhaul which I hope will make the front page more engaging.  We'll also be adding a tag cloud and a glossary and index of tags so it'll be easier for people to look through the archives. The glossary should explain what some of the terms like "boobsocks" (clothing that encases each breast separately like socks), "boob flounder" (both breasts on one side of the body), etc... mean.
If anybody has any other suggestions to improve the site's usability and readability, please let me know.  I'm very interested in feedback. 
A reminder, for those who want to follow us without using Tumblr, we have an RSS feed. (For newbies, RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is basically a feed you can read using an RSS reader. Simply copy and paste https://eschergirls.com/rss.xml into an RSS reader and it will keep you up to date on Escher Girls!)
Second, as usual, I've been working through restoring all the broken/poorly formatted/un-alt-texted posts from the past.  That's like 10 years of posts, so it takes a while.  This month my major restorations are these 3 "Legacy of the Phoenix" Marvel Max covers which has that infamous "peeling thong" image, this Magic Knight Armageddon card of a sexy elven Spartan, and the entire "Chronicles of the Dragon Knights"/"La Geste de Chevaliers Dragons" tag which includes 2 posts that have lengthy discussions from commenters about the work and what they think of it which may or may not be interesting to people. There's also a submission and redraw of a Tetris girl by Junodog.
I'm still working my way through the Tumblr inbox backlog, so if you submitted a post a long time ago, you might see it pop up in the near future.  I'm really sorry how long it takes for me to get to older submissions, Tumblr's inbox works in reverse chronological order so things get buried really easily.  I'm also still appealing the many incorrectly flagged posts on Tumblr, but the responses are automated and arbitrary (the algorithm seems to have a hard time knowing what actual nudity is because they constantly flag single coloured full bodysuits as nudity xD ).
Anyway, now I want to thank all of the wonderful Patreon supporters.  I really appreciate the support on Patreon and Ko-Fi because it helps me keep the site independently run from having to rely just on Tumblr or any other platform, and allows us to make site upgrades and make the site more accessible to people with disabilities.  Your support helps me pay for the domain, hosting, and other upgrades. <3

I've been wanting to write/draw stories about Chuuya joining ADA for a while now but my sketches are all very unorganised throughout a timeline I have in my head. So I will take this opportunity to rant about my headcanon of the possibility alternate universe that Asagiri hinted at the end of Beast: "leaves the Port Mafia and follows Dazai"
'Take this opportunity' because Tumblr has unlimited characters and I'm basically talking to air where I can comfortably get it off my mind and archive my ideas. Nobody is going to read this.
In my head, they are two possible ways this can play out:
Like Beast, shifting reality with the power of the book
No book, have Dazai manipulate the situation so Chuuya leaves Port Mafia

Like Beast, shifting reality with the power of the book
Beast AU Dazai had the knowledge of what happens in other realities or at least from the 'original' which is the main storyline. That means:
Dazai knows Paul Verlaine will come
Paul Verlaine would kill the Flags
The book still require some coherent storyline for it to shift reality. So with the power of the book Dazai can write that Chuuya knew that if he stayed in the Mafia, Paul Verlaine would come and kill the Flags. For the sake of the Flags, Chuuya would leave the Port Mafia along with Dazai.
Do they go straight to the ADA after this? Would ADA be able to prevent the catastrophe Verlaine would bring?
ADA has Yosano and Ranpo on board so I'd think they have a chance? Plus they would have plenty more time to prepare for Verlaine's arrival (get the damn Special Ability Division on board if they have to)
Dazai & Chuuya: We bring trouble to you all please adopt us
Fukuzawa: wtf
Which is why I had this headcanon drawn, of what Chuuya would wear if he made it into ADA at the age of 16 after the King of Assassin event. I posted on my Instagram with plans for a redraw in the future

There are undoubtedly consequences to this reality shift with the biggest one being the Flags surviving but becoming Chuuya's enemy
Chuuya would stay with the ADA since he "betrayed the Mafia" for the Flags? But at the same time he becomes their enemy? But he also can't really explain to them why he had to do what he had done? Because it doesn't matter either way they were going to be enemies? And Chuuya is fine with it because he cares for the Flags and didn't mind seen as the enemy CAUSE THAT'S THE KIND OF THING HE DOES LIKE WITH SHIRASE AND THE SHEEP-

Now I actually prefer this storyline than the one with the book because this has to happen after the death of the Flags and Odasaku - cements the reason for Dazai to leave the Mafia. Which makes it even more challenging for ADA Chuuya to happen but that's where✨character development✨ kicks in. If Akutagawa can join the ADA in Beast no doubt my boy Chuuya can.
The kick starter of this event will begin on the night Dazai choose to disappear from the organisation. Remember that whole blowing up Chuuya's car thing? There's a headcanon Dazai did that so Chuuya wouldn't go look for him which may arouse suspicion upon Chuuya and Dazai.
Well let's say Dazai choose NOT to blow up that car, Chuuya goes to look for him, and the dominoes starts tumbling from there.
So Dazai manage to find Chief Taneda, Chairman of the Special Ability Division. This wasn't animated in the anime but the light novel mentioned about a drinking competition between the two? And Taneda would help Dazai find a legal job if he win or something- I don't remember who won but I'd like to imagine Chuuya stomping in at this moment-
"How would Chuuya know where to find hi-" I'd ask the same in Dead Apple but they got some connection or something, they can sniff each other from miles away I guess.
Anyway, Chuuya stomping in for an explanation but he wouldn't act recklessly if the Chief of Special Ability Division is around. Now it's Dazai's turn to pull some strings around here because as you imagine, drinking competition + Chuuya's lightweight = hangover and a potential plot expansion
Chuuya: *blackout*
Dazai: Actually.....do you mind introducing a job for both of us? :)
Now this is rather non-consensual but Dazai will need to pull some similar shit like he did with the Sheep to get Chuuya out of PM, probably even more extreme. They are both the pillars of the Port Mafia. One executive running away is shit but at least one half of Soukoku is in PM which balances out, in the original timeline.
But two of them gone? Now Mori feels the heat of trouble, he wouldn't sit still.
Mori, as the leader of PM, he wouldn't doubt Chuuya's loyalty. Chuuya has proven himself within the 4 years of Mafia life. All he has to do is wait for Chuuya to return with an explanation and all will be well.
Chuuya's loyalty is not easily wavered. Dazai alone is not enough to change Chuuya's mind, this is where the ADA comes in. (Assuming Kunikida is still a math teacher) Fukuzawa, Ranpo and Yosano would play an important role.
Fukuzawa: The strongest cage is not of steel but of mind.

Some of you, who have been following me for a long time, remember my Mega Man OCs Aiden, Slate, Emma and Yuki…? Well, I have decided to draw them again, but with different outfits and changing Mega Man OCs to human characters (except Yuki) who are having a crazy, magical and paranormal adventure, similar to Gravity Falls and Dead End: Paranormal Park.
I missed drawing my first two OCs (along with Emma and Yuki) back when I started drawing my own art and posted it on my social media. Since I’m not interested in drawing Mega Man characters anymore and left the fandom, I decided to change the descriptions about Aiden, Slate and Emma so that it wouldn’t confuse others and show they are completely different, separate characters in a different world. I change Slate’s name into “Rian”, which I think fits better. (Also, I think Rian is pronounced Ryan.)
I also want to change Yuki’s species into called an Ice Fox as a mythical creature instead called a Spirit. His story will be very different than in Mega Man fanfic, and how he met Aiden and his family.
Yuki’s appearance remains the same, but his character description will change a little. Same with his powers. Yuki doesn’t have the ability to grow plants anymore because he is an Ice Fox so it would make sense. Yuki’s powers are Cryokinesis (controlling snow, ice and frost), healing powers, and the ability to walk on water.
Just want to let you know that Yuki does NOT have telepathy to speak to others in their head anymore in the other world. I thought it would be confusing to other people hearing who Aiden and his siblings are talking to if Yuki is directly talking to them using telepathy. So in the other universe, Yuki CAN talk, having the ability to speak human language.
He also does not age, but that doesn’t mean he’s immortal. His age is unknown, but he is mentally 6 years old. He is a mythical, elemental creature that lives from a different dimension.
I may not draw them often like I used to. But maybe in the future when I have an idea I want to draw, I could show some part of their adventures (and maybe I’ll redraw their parents in the future?). However, I probably won’t. Who knows. I’m not sure yet.
I’m also NOT planning to write a story because now I enjoy drawing more than writing and because it will take so long to finish the story. And I don’t think I would have the time because I’ve been busy with college and other stuff. So it would stress me out and get me exhausted. I moved on not too long ago, so I won’t make any stories to make for my OCs.
Anyway, that’s all I have to say. I’m planning to draw Aiden along with Slate/Rian, Emma and Yuki. ^_^

Stoic. Strategic. Secretive. Always businesslike, Always poise. Unfeeling.
Those are words used to describe Mayuu, the Ramshackle prefect and the head of the Overblot Protection and Prevention Administration, OPPA for short. With her group of hand-picked, qualified young men, she defeats any overblots that cross her path.
But no one is without secrets, without weakness. And if you earn her trust, she may share some of them. Specifically business-related ones only, of course! This little lady keeps her cards close to her chest.
She is usually found snooping around in the campus or scheming in the Ramshackle meeting room, the old Ramshackle dormhead's room. If not, then you can assume shes in one of her part time jobs. Though at times she lingers close to the light music club room. Probably to check up on Lilia or Cater. No other reason, right?

Yet in truth, Mayuu would much prefer battling 2 insanely op overblots to a pop quiz in Animal Linguistics. Though, at the very least, she has better grades than Deuce.
Not-So-Fun tidbit: Often times, she locks herself up inside her room. Most presume she does it to keep her future plans secret, safe from prying eyes. Yet some say they heard whimpering from the other side of the door, accompanied with a foreign melody.

"Tattoo Tango"
Tattoo Tango lets the wielder insert voices in the target's conscience. If the wielder is close with the target or is highly informed of the target's critical weakness, the wielder could accompany images with the voices. Sensory images, like the ripple of the ocean or the heat of the scalding sands, will be created.
An unfortunate side effect though is the user experiencing the same thing as their target. Their pain, their despair. And Mayuu uses this to her advantage, to make sure the overblot would happen where no outside party would be affected.
Another physical side effect on the wielder is that whatever image they created shall be imprinted on their chest, maui style.
But one must be careful when wielding such powerful magic. For if the image is too concrete, the wielder's soul may enter the illusion, leaving their body unconscious.

An Artist Beware
I don't do these very often, but this is something I feel warrants a warning because this is something that could, potentially, do real harm.
Without further ado
The user in question is a person named Zoffu. (Here and on Toyhouse, as well as YCH Commishes, and I think Instagram) I am going to explain what happened, and warn others from buying from them in the future.
It started with this whole fiasco. I won an auction on an adoptable that I saw a few times and liked. It was a cute design. I enjoyed the colors, but there were a couple things I would change if I won. The bidding was at $8 so I figured might as well. I was going to redraw it or have them do edits, because it had human feet on an anthro which I don't like. I personally prefer digitigrade feet, humanoid feet just look off on anthro characters.
They refused to sell an adoptable that I won the bidding on, and THEN accused me of being a zoophile to somebody else. Why? Because I gave a code to somebody for their friend. Guy said his name was Ethan, wasn't really into the adoptable scene that much, just liked looking at the creative character designs and art.
Of course I was happy to help! I love Toyhouse, and I love buying and selling adopts! I honestly wanted to find the person and give them some characters from my sales account once the invite was used, just to get them started, when they reached out to me and told me that Zoffu LITERALLY TOLD THEM I WAS A ZOOPHILE!!!!!!! That is not ok. That is in no way ok. Baseless accusations like that can really damage a person.
He said he wanted to ask me directly because that was a big accusation, and also said that he felt I was in the right to know that this person may have been going around saying that shit about me. I wouldn't know. The fucker blocked me over some petty bullshit.
They wanted to control what you have in your gallery. Their TOS said they "check their sold designs regularly" to "Make sure you aren't breaking their TOS" and it's like. Why does it matter? When you sell something to me, it stops belonging to you, and starts belonging to me. You can't control what I did with it. It's mine. I paid you. What's stopping somebody from reselling it in the future and me getting ahold of it?
Honestly, if they want to control what happens to designs they make so badly, maybe they just shouldn't make and sell designs.
ANYWAY. The reason for this beware is that the person accused me of being a zoophile, to another person, in a way where they could easily find me. They straight up just referred me to me as "A zoophile they blocked". False accusations are extremely damaging, because a LOT of people just believe everything at face value.
Be REALLY!!!! careful when getting anything from this artist. Extremely careful. Unless, of course, you want to be accused of being a zoophile and have that accusion spread to other people who may or may not have even a very thin connection to you!

individual 2023 artworks below (plus some thoughts on them because why not. Said thoughts will include me critiquing some of the pieces, especially the ones from earlier in the year.)

JANUARY - Art piece i did right before For the Future aired of Luz and the rest of the hexsquad having a much-needed group hug. I didn't really look at any references for this one (apart from for the character's designs) so the poses look really awkward and stiff tbh 😭. That being said, I'm still glad I gave it a shot, and it looks a lot better than the one I did before Thanks to Them's release, since I was more used to drawing the characters.
I'm not going to go too much into some of the... questionable... anatomy choices I made, since they aren't exclusive to this artwork in particular, nor is this the worst example of them (*cough cough* my old King's Tide screenshot redraw).
Overall I think this is an okay art piece. Definitely could have been improved by actually using references for the pose though.

FEBRUARY - This one is actually another redraw of a REALLY old piece I drew in 2021. With my finger. Not a good combination to say the least. This one is miles better especially in terms of anatomy, facial expressions and composition.
That's not to say that it's without it's flaws. I do think that lining up Betty and Amber's poses better would have improved the overall look of the piece. Another thing that I did end up changing a little while after I drew this was removing the shine from the black parts of the mirror to make it look like it was actually cracked, which I didn't do in the original version (that one's on my scratch account if you want to see it). It's a subtle difference, but I think it makes the piece look a lot better.
Again, I think this is an okay piece overall. Looks like the mona lisa compared to the 2021 version, but honestly I think anything would.

MARCH - Yet another Owl House artwork (bet u guys cant guess what my favourite tv show is). This one I created for a zine which I was working on for my multimedia class (this artwork in particular was supposed to be an advertisement for the finale). You can kinda tell I still wasn't that confident in drawing King, since his pose is pretty stiff (I don't think I ever really got used to drawing him tbh).
I do think this piece would have benefited from some more shading and lighting that wasn't the singular multiply layer I placed over the characters then erased some parts of. (There is some other shading but there's no other lighting).
Most of the other issues I have with this pieces are just issues I have with my old art in general so I'll leave it there.

APRIL - This is the last Owl House artwork I promise. I made this one for Zeez Vov Gee 2's watching and dreaming art contest. I actually do still quite like this one, which might partly be to do with the fact that I really like all of the character's timeskip designs, but whatever.
Some of the proportions on the hands are a bit weird, and I REALLY wish I put the shading on the lineart as well, considering how light of a colour it is.
One thing I do really like which I didn't notice while I was drawing it, is the pose Luz and Amity are in forms a sort of heart shape, which is really adorable akdjfhskhdf ;w;
Anyway, overall a pretty good piece, might remake it later. Who knows 👀

MAY - as you may immediately be able to tell, I did not make that much art in May (I might've had a few tests on at the time. Or I was just lazy). This one is actually OC art for once (wow shocking never seen before).
It's kinda just a doodle/a more doodley art piece, but it's pretty alright. I actually really like the pose that Robyn (the OC in the drawing) is in. This is also kinda the first time I drew their design, so yeah. The background isn't great, but I can't really expect that much from a doodle -v-
overall, pretty decent doodle. (for anyone wondering if I'll ever post more about Robyn... maybe? I'm mainly using their story for writing practice, but I think I posted something from it on here)

JUNE - June was literally the polar opposite of May. I'm not kidding, there were like 3 artworks that I was debating putting for June (this one, some deltarune fanart and a TOH screenshot redraw). I eventually went with this one because HOLY CRAP am I proud of that background.
This one was really heavily influenced by cartoon backgrounds (in particular ones from Gravity Falls and Hilda), and while I do think there are a few things that could be improved (like some of the trees), this was the first time in a while that i'd tried drawing a background that wasn't grass and a couple of trees (and i think the first time ever that i'd done something this complex).
I think another reason that this one turned out so good is that it was a birthday card for a friend. And if there is anything that I am constantly trying to do better at every time I redraw it, it's birthday cards (probably bc they're for my friends, love you guys sm /p).
anyways, overall a really good piece, 11/10 background.

JULY - behold... the first artwork I posted on Tumblr! I drew this shortly after seeing Across the Spiderverse in cinemas (which I have to say was one of the greatest experiences of my life).
I wanted to mess around with lineless art a bit on this one, as well as sort of try to give it a watercolour feel like earth-65. And I gotta say, I think it turned out pretty good. Though I did spend a good 15 minutes looking for references because ATSV wasn't out digitally yet ;w;
overall, I like this piece, I tried something new and I made fanart for the greatest movie of all time (in my opinion)

AUGUST - I don't think I drew nearly enough Omori fanart when I was super into the game, so I'm making up for it now. I wanted to redraw one of my favourite photos from the photo album for this one.
I probably could have put a bit more detail into the background for this one, but I really like the warm lighting, and the dappled light effect that I used for the characters. The lineart is also a bit sketchy, but I was (and sort of still am) in the process of figuring out how I actually want my lineart to look.
overall, I really like this one, nice colours, nice lighting, has the omori characters being happy in it :]

SEPTEMBER - like in May, I didn't get as much Art Stuff TM done, so it's just a doodle of some of my OCS (except this time it's Copper, Lapis and Peg, who I have posted about before).
I kinda just wanted to draw something cozy, so I didn't put too much effort into the background and stuff. One thing I will say, is that I wish I drew them looking a bit older, since they are all 16-17 lol.
overall, this one's ok. Could be better, but it's just a doodle.

OCTOBER - ohohohohoho we are SO back. Yet another birthday card. I love the perspective and poses on this one (because, you guessed it, I used references for them). Everything about this artwork was really fun to draw (especially the characters).

NOVEMBER - redraw of an artwork from 2021 part 2: electric boogaloo. I remember being so proud of the original artwork, so I wanted to make this one an artwork I was proud of too (which was a success).
One of the main things I wanted to do for this one was to actually draw a background, instead of getting one off google. The one I drew was simple, but I think it really works, because I wanted the focus to be on the character, not the background. I also added some slight perspective to the drawing to make it look a bit more interesting.

DECEMBER - and finally... December's artwork! Aka my banner. I wanted to do something kinda simple for this, because I'm probably going to redraw it or make a new one later. I really like the contrast between the colours in the foreground (which is supposed to be inside a train, but it's kinda hard to tell), and the background.
Also something I've started doing for a few artworks is making a duplicate of the artwork, blurring it slightly and lowering the opacity, which makes it look a lot more visually interesting :0
overall, love this one, good artwork to end the year off with :] (i'll prolly still draw more stuff tho)
(fun fact - I was going to put the redraw I did of the 'get in loser we're going shopping' scene with the characters from TMC for December because it's the highest quality meme i've ever made but it looked weird next to the other ones bc it was in black and white 😭)

Oh, you dumb motherfucker I am bout to info dump on your ass. Fucking had me redraw this wriggler just so I can show you some half decent art of what they used to look like. Cause there was no way in hell I was gonna show you my initial drawing of him from when I was still in middle school. You better buckle in bucko this is a long one.

The character you are referring to is Rakker Dolika. The name "Rakker" means "a rascal, a tomboy, a scamp," which points to his mischievous nature. I also chose the name because it sounds close to "wrecker," which I think fits a destructive clown boy. "Dolika" means "doll," which correlates with how he does his makeup and how he dresses up.
Rakker was created when I was working on a stupid project. The idea was to take Wonderland characters and turn them into trolls. These trolls would be part of a circus/carnival that would buy low-blood slaves and make them perform. They would try to sway the public's opinion about the church by using the supposedly not-enslaved performers as an example. They would claim that the low bloods had seen the light of the mirthful messiahs and converted to believers.

I ultimately scrapped the idea, but I enjoyed Rakker a lot and ended up keeping him. I can't tell you what character in Alice in Wonderland he was supposed to embody, because it was a very obscure one.

(The art is bad I know. it's just to help you visualize em. I did not spend a whole lot of time on it. wasn't gonna go all out when I plan to revamp the design later to something I like more. would've been a waste of time really.) Originally, Rakker was supposed to follow the Alice in Wonderland theme and look like a character from the book. However, I strayed away from that theme and instead made him look like a ventriloquist dummy. I thought the face paint design was interesting, and I never really had an idea for his horns, so I didn't draw them in the image above. Because ya know I had nothing to go off of. So this is close to how Rakker originally looked without having to show you my horrible old art work.

For the revamp version of Rakker, I have some things figured out. Some of those things include his sign and horns. His horns are designed after his sign. I took the weird circle thing on the left side of the sign and rotated it upside down. That ended up being his horn design.
As for what his future revamp design will be, I'm currently on the fence about that. I thought about changing him from a ventriloquist dummy to a Harlequin. I will eventually get around to drawing him and figuring him out fully.

Story wise, with this revamped version since the carnival doesn't exist anymore, I've been fussing around with some ideas. I was thinking he was kind of like an internet troll. He plays pranks on the elders at the church and starts really stupid online debates. He acts like those 14-year-olds you see on the internet who think being obnoxious is a charming personality. He is only 13 though.

That age there actually has me a little worried about adding him to my blog. So, he has a personality, but I may more so only show art I make of him and will refrain from using him in rps. He will also most likely not be included in the narrative I might build up for my blog.
Rakker is a character that I created specifically for my own enjoyment. He isn't complex with some insane backstory. His only real story is his relationship with his best friend, Angora, who is the same age as him. He is supposed to simply be a character that brings me back childhood nostalgia. I could go into more detail about Angora, but since you only asked about Rakker, I will spare you. Need to show you some mercy after this if you even read it all lol.

It’s so nice that everything’s back to normal at the office now, isn’t it? If “normal” means mass layoffs, empty office buildings, confusing return-to-office policies, AI panic, and the whiplash-y feeling that just when employees were starting to redraw some boundaries between work and home, an economic downturn has forced society to fret even more about work. Managers are channeling this too by emphasizing “efficiency”—at least if they’re not among the many managers Mark Zuckerberg has laid off in his quest for, well, efficiency.
In this sense, Simone Stolzoff’s new book couldn’t be better-timed. The Good Enough Job: Reclaiming Life from Work posits that we—and Americans, especially—have fetishized work to the point that we’ve lost our identities to it. “For white-collar professionals, jobs have become akin to a religious identity: In addition to a paycheck, they provide meaning, community, and a sense of purpose,” says Stolzoff, a designer who has worked at IDEO and written for The Atlantic, Quartz, and WIRED.
The book kicks off with a parable about an MBA type urging a fisherman to scale his business into a global operation. The fisherman replies that he already has what the MBA is promising he could achieve in the long term: enough success to feed himself and his family, as well as plenty of time for leisure. The MBA is, of course, befuddled. It’s a tiny but meaningful story that goes down as easy as an oyster; the book makes a tasty meal of snackable tales and anecdotes. 
The Good Enough Job, which I’ve been reading this week, also includes reporting on the decline of organized religion, the rise of always-online work culture, and our willingness to use work as a means of self-actualization. It all adds up to a stark portrait of a society truly obsessed with work. That’s risky, Stolzoff says, especially in light of the recent layoffs in the tech sector. I talked with him about our relationship to work and whether it’s possible to achieve any kind of work-life equilibrium in the modern era. The book comes out in the US on May 23. 
WIRED: Why is office work so weird right now? Assuming you agree that it is, in fact, weird. 
Simone Stolzoff: Yeah. I’m reminded of when I worked as a summer camp counselor growing up and during our training the camp’s director always said, “Kids’ biggest fear is that no one is in control.” And I think that is happening for office workers right now, without a clear mandate or a clear vision of what the future of the workplace looks like. It feels like everything is in flux. Managers are dealing with their own uncertainty around the reevaluation of the role of work in their lives while they’re also trying to be leaders and speak with confidence about a future that no one can really predict.
Just yesterday someone told me, “I am a manager and my employees are coming to me and being forthright about the fact that they’re updating their LinkedIn profiles and their resumes.” She has been telling them that she’s doing the same. Increased uncertainty has led to much more open communication about the fact that even jobs that felt stable, are not necessarily such. But this also speaks to the fact that no one really knows what the future of work holds and people are making it up as they go along.
It sounds like a continuation of the pandemic, in the sense that this has all led to some people being their most vulnerable and transparent at the workplace. 
It’s a combination of both the pandemic and the economic climate. An employee at YouTube was telling me about how Alphabet is making workers come into the office three days a week. And she said that on the one hand she thinks it’s bullshit and that the company is just trying to justify the capital expenditures that they’ve made on offices. But she also admitted it makes sense because morale is low and employee workplace culture is nonexistent and coming back to the office is really one of the better ways managers have found to facilitate a more collectivist identity.
You write about “workism,” a phrase coined by Derek Thompson from The Atlantic. How does it play into the current workplace dynamic? 
The basic idea that Derek laid out is that workism is treating work akin to a religious identity. It’s looking to work not just for a paycheck but also for a community, a sense of identity and purpose and meaning in your life. 
There are a few risks to that. One is that it’s just not a burden our jobs are designed to bear. When we look to work for transcendence, it creates these massive expectations, and jobs can’t always deliver on those expectations. A second risk is that over-investing in just one aspect of who we are is risky because those other aspects of our life might be underinvested in. We’re not just workers, we’re also friends, siblings, parents, neighbors, and citizens. As so many people found out during the pandemic, if your job is your sole source of identity and you lose it—what’s left?
You argue that workism is generationally distinctive and write about your own Italian family and how your grandparents worked to live—and the emphasis was really on live. They had structure to their days, but there was that long break in the middle of the day where they went home and ate orecchiette with the family. Work-as-a-religion seems relatively new, or at least industrial age new.
There are many possible explanations of how we got here—economic explanations, historical explanations, political and cultural explanations. The one I focus on in the book is this huge objective value that Americans give to the workplace. You know, we’re an incredibly individualistic country, where we treat CEOs as celebrities and we plaster “Always do what you love” on the walls of our coworking spaces. There’s this push toward wanting work to be our means of self-actualization.
You can pair that with some historical trends, for example the decline of organized religion over the course of the past 40 years, which has left a spiritual void in many American lives. You look at policy decisions in this country, the way that we tie health care to full-time employment for so many people. You look at the historical factors, how our country was founded and the way capitalism and the Protestant work ethic were the two strands entwined to form our country’s DNA. 
And what we’ve found is that, unlike our peer nations, like France and Germany, where at-work time has steadily decreased since the beginning of the 20th century, certain subsets of Americans are working more than ever. And this is a historical anomaly. In the past, the richer a person or a country was, the less they worked, because they could afford not to.
Of course, the majority of people not just in the US but in the world do not work to self-actualize, they work to survive. Wages have been stagnant for the past 40 years, so they’ve had to work harder to buy the same loaf of bread. But the argument of my book is that regardless of what type of job you’re in, we now all live in this culture of productivity and thinking our self-worth is somehow tied to our output at work.
The danger of that, you write, is that we end up taking work events quite personally if they don’t go right. 
Totally, yeah. There is research around the value of what researchers call self-complexity, or just kind of cultivating different aspects of who we are. This also makes sense intuitively, right? If you’re rising and falling with the professional successes in your life, then one piece of negative feedback, one comment from a coworker can throw your life into a funk. But if you’ve cultivated other aspects of who you are, then maybe you’re having a bad day at the office but you feel like you have a very supportive partner or you’re having a good day with that recreational softball team you play on, then there are other aspects of your life that make you feel whole and aren’t predicated on market forces or what your manager or boss says.
The tricky question is where to draw the line. We need money to survive in this world. But as you write, work can be incredibly paternalistic and often exploits people who are most dutiful and hard-working. Is there a formula for finding the right amount to invest in work?
If there was one main question driving the book, it’s how to balance the pursuit of meaningful work without letting work take over your life. I’m not anti-work. We work more hours than we spend doing just about anything else in our lives, so how we spend that time matters. But I also think that the more we can be clear-headed about work’s role in our lives and understand that fundamentally it’s an economic relationship, the better.
We’ve been told that jobs are meant to be callings and vocations, and thinking of it as an exchange of your time and your labor for money is not the most sexy thing in the world. But I actually think that a more transactional approach to work can liberate both employers and employees. It frees employers to focus on setting clear expectations about what good work looks like, and it frees employees to, for example, advocate for fair compensation. More broadly, it frees employees to treat work as a living and not the entirety of their lives.
This is something that so many tech workers in particular have discovered recently, especially at companies like Meta and Twitter and Microsoft and other places that have had layoffs. I’ve spoken to so many employees that say, basically, “I used to think this was my life’s work, my dream job, and the past year has shown me that this is just a job.”
I’m trying to introduce the framework of the “good enough” job. For one person that could mean working in a particular industry or having a certain job title, and for another it’s getting off work at a certain hour so you can pick your kids up from elementary school. Rather than thinking about work as this endless pursuit of perfection, it’s more about having an approach that allows you to understand that what you do for work is not the entirety of who you are as a person.

Hello all!! It’s been a while, and my lovely editor and I have an announcement to make:
BLOOD/LINE IS RETURNING!
But not only that, no! After looking into the story and it’s plans, we have decided to not only return Blood/line-
But we’re also rewriting the story!!
The whole thing. We’re rewriting it.
I have decided that the plans and original layout of Blood/line in short, sucked. The base of the story was based on an idea I had when I was younger and made it grow from there. But the story itself I began to have no fun with, and I see the critics of people saying the plot and way it’s written feels faulty and unfair - And I agree!! 
So my editor and I had been reworking the whole story into something more fun, something more enjoyable. The rewrite has a shift in its plot, its story, and theme. But do not worry! The spine of the story is still there, with the MC having horns and a monstrous society being involved (and your loving father Phil is still there). 
I have grown as a writer, and I am excited to show everyone such growth.
Onto some questions and answers:
When will the new rewrite be out?
I am not so sure, but it may be a while. While I am a writer, I’m also an artist, and I have a lot of my focus on my artwork. The editor, Racooby, also has their own life and work. We both do not have as much free time as we did when Blood/line first began. Updates to the story itself may take more than 2 months, so we’d appreciate some help on keeping the topic alive.
BUT… You can still view previews of Blood/line.
What do you mean by that?
I am planning on putting some snippets of Blood/line in my Patreon for $1 a month. For my $1 tier I have weekly wips, and am considering putting some WIPS of Blood/line chapters in that tier.
If possible, I can even have people gain early access to the prologue when I finish writing it. Blood/line of course still will be free to view, just some wips and possible early access (still thinking about it).
You said the theme changed, what’s changed?
Blood/line is now a sci-fi/supernatural story!! 
Instead of being set in our modern days, it will be set a bit in the future. There will be some high-tech, a different way of life, and a change in atmosphere.
What else can we know about the rewrite?
We will only share a bit, but:
The MC is disabled, and you get to choose how so (It deals with the five senses)
The ROs are still the same, but have been tweaked. We are going to redraw the ROs when we get the chance.
You don’t go to college in Moonspot
There’s a different sense of urgency in the plotline
We’re gonna add in more horror. My lovely editor Racooby is going to help me with that.
What about the old story? What will happen?
The original Blood/line is now no longer available.
I know some do enjoy the story, but I myself just don’t like it. I’d rather not have it up anymore.

Zombie Apocalypse AU
Just in case, why Principal doesn't trusting or believing zombies? Because he's gaining courage after zombie apocalypse begun. The man who shot all the zombies was survived from getting bitten by them. But... Things go get really right in time as Neko-Sufi, who's now half-human and half-zombie flied to that zombie to save him.
After she done eating meat from that zombie, she saw Principal, causing him to get screwed, he knows it's not her, she's zombie now. Principal tried to shoot her to death, but run out of bullet. What he will do now?? *Sighs* There was nothing to do, he was expecting his death....
Half-human and half-zombie Neko-Sufi walked to Principal with smile, but as for him, his time has come.... He'll get attacked by her to become like others... That's why he thought Real Neko is dead for good... Goodbye, Principal, you'll always be remembered by everyone, including your manager, and.... Neko.... 😔

So he wanted to find somebody who would be a full time live-in artist who would draw pictures of him or whatever he wanted for a shit ton of money. That's where Tippy comes in. Tippy won the art contest because Dio thought their art was funny.
(EDIT: Changed it a little bit. Dio wanted a stand user specifically. So he asked people to redraw one of 8 pictures of him. Tippy was the only one who could see his stand and drew him alongside Dio. So he was like,"Cool we got ourselves a stand user now..." It turns out it wasn't Dio's stand, it was Cream as a substitute because Dio didn't want anyone seeing The World just yet. Also I crossed some things out. I might actually make a short one off fanfic about the Sapphire Heartverse in the future!)
One of the requirements to live in Dio's mansion is that you have to have a stand. Tippy has Sapphire Heart but doesn't like to use them unless it's just for fun. Dio told Vanilla to keep an eye on Tippy and make sure they don't get into any trouble, as well as protect them. Tippy became real annoying real fast to Vanilla and got into a bunch of shenanigans that drove him up a wall. Tippy didn't like to be watched all hours of the day by some weirdo in a leotard, so they would sometimes use invisibreak to get away from him.
One day, Tippy used invisibreak for too long and fainted in front of Vanilla. Luckily he caught them in his arms and stayed with them until they came to. Vanilla asked wtf that was all about and they explained to him that they don't know how to use that ability without passing out.
Vanilla realizes that they may have a similar type of stand... He reveals that he used to not be able to use Cream that well- Tippy laughs because his stand's name is funny. It wasn't so funny once they saw how fucking terrifying that thing was. Slowly but surely, Vanilla taught Tippy how to use their stand to their benefit better than escaping from him and stealing things.
Dio grew quite fond of Tippy as a friend and would often give them gifts and coo over how precious he finds them. Vanilla would be silently jealous of all the attention they got which would result in the two arguing and calling one another names.
Vanilla's go to insult would be to call Tippy "Termite" because of how short they are compared to him (Vanilla: 6'7, Tippy: 5'3). Tippy's insult for him would be "Lucky Charms" because of all the charms and pendants he wears. Though they fight a lot, they don't seem to mind each other's company for the most part. The two find ways to irritate the hell out of each other, sometimes on purpose, sometimes on accident.
Sometimes Hol Horse would just hang out with Tippy while they draw and would talk about anything and everything. They were actually friends way before Tippy got hired by Dio... Hmmmmm
Tippy's relationship with Dio got stronger as he began to talk to them more and more. The vampire asked about their life and how they like it there so far. The blonde admired their enthusiasm and became enchanted by them. Tippy and Dio soon had nightly chats and their company was greatly welcomed by Dio. After a while, he finally decided to take them on a date and had Vanilla cook a nice dinner with wine for them. Dio confessed his feelings in his own way and Tippy was very flattered and fell for him as well. Vanilla watched all this and, though he was happy for his Lord Dio, he wished so badly he could have been the one in his arms.
Dio overheard Tippy and Vanilla talking and would watch them interact with each other. He thought their little rivalry was quite charming and kind of shipped them tbh-
He could tell the two, though they seemed to have a surface dislike for each other, really enjoyed hanging out together. Dio devised a plan to get them to fall in love with each other, so he would do all kinds of things involving stopping time and putting Vanilla and Tippy into fun little situations to get them even closer.
One time Dio made Tippy fall off a ladder to see if Vanilla would catch them. Vanilla didn't hesitate to save them and got all flustered when Tippy thanked him. He's always had a soft side for the little termite.
Dio would frequently talk to the both of them together and tease them, suggesting that they might be in a relationship. He would call it an "office romance" and tell Vanilla to bring his "little lover" into his office so he could speak to them.
Dio's plan finally came into fruition when he found Vanilla and Tippy kissing in the hallway. Vanilla thought his lord would be enraged but, to his surprise, Dio was ecstatic and even yelled,"YOU OWE ME 20 BUCKS, N'DOUL!! Oh that's right, he can't hear me." To which N'Doul yelled back,"I'M BLIND NOT DEAF, YOU IDIOT- I MEAN MR DIO SIR."
And after the good ending happened, Tippy and Vanilla decided to travel the world together and get married 💙💜
