“i said that there were passages, that there were maps on maps, i have said ‘vertically,’ and i have said ‘and so forth.’ could there then be other spaces? could there then be other cartographies? yes. at least one other space, that incommensurable space travelled by what used to be called the imagination, and which is none other but that objective imaginary, constellated by symbols, charted by phantasms, scarcely variable in the course of time. a space in ruins, one that endures and is lost in the iterative time of history, traversed by coherency, closures, bridges, cycles; a space where he who remembers can circulate like the argonauts in the kingdom of gold, theseus in the labyrinth, orpheus in the underworld, moses and the chosen people in the desert of exodus, or the little girl in wonderland. an ordered, constraining, logical and compact space of initiatory, fabulous and extraordinary voyages. yet these voyages are vital, familiar, evocative and ordinary—the discovery of visited and unvisited lands of the unknown, of the unknowable, of the night, voyages to the heart of darkness, to the center of the earth.”

book (lovers) - h.s.
a/n: okay i know ive said this about everything ive written but this one takes the cake for being so self indulgent its actually insane. excerpt she reads is from page 425 of ‘kiss the sky’ by kb ritchie :)) enjoy my loves, this is one of my favorite things ive written. oh also this is severely corny LMFAO
Tumblr media
Splayed across the couch, she rested her head against the armrest while her feet lay idle in Harry’s lap, chin downturned as she read the book that dangled above her face, fingers softly tapping against the front and back covers. It was Sunday, and a big part of their ‘weekly reset’ as they liked to call it, entailed a full house clean, and while the dishwasher ran and the clothes were in the washer and dryer, they would read a little bit of their respective books.
However, what never failed to make people laugh, including Harry’s fans, was how drastic of a change their books would be in genre. How Harry would carry around an early century poetry book, while his girlfriend would carry around an annotated copy of a romance book, flashy tabs sticking out of the edges and all. It was always a conversation starter when they would go to cafes, and they would even try to switch books— which never failed to make Y/N laugh at the way Harry scrunched up his nose at the vulgar language on the pages. He almost always asked to switch their books when she ended up on a smut scene. Just his luck, he guesses.
“Switch?” Harry murmured, eyes looking up from his Bukowski book, seeing his sweet girlfriend peek her eyes up from hers.
“Um,” She said quietly, almost mouse-like. “Can we… I just, um, I just got to— a good part?”
“A good pa- oh.” Harry hummed, brows scrunched in confusion until he realized what she meant. “Uh… how about 5 more minutes? Give y’a bit of a head start right now if y’speed read?”
“Yes! Okay, going.” She smiled, eyes trailing back toward her book, flipping through the pages every 30-45 seconds, knowing she was now in a time crunch.
Harry watched in admiration as she grasped her book with one hand, fanning out toward the living room, her face now fully visible to him. He admired the way her brows would scrunch every so often, or how she picked up the habit of pinching her bottom lip between her fingers in concentration like he did. Or how her brows would furrow, and how she would blink the slightest bit faster when she found something cute, as if she was trying to paint a picture in her head without closing her eyes, finding the smallest reprieve in the semi-regular darkness.
She was his own personal jar of perfection. Of sunshine, of love, of happiness. She saved him. In every way a person can be saved.
“Okay, I’m ready,” she grinned with finality, sitting up to meet him halfway, knees hitting the side of his thigh as she held her book out, thumb in place of her spot. He smiled as she shook him right out of his thoughts, a serene glimmer in his eyes, heart nearly falling out of his chest in pure awe. Awe that someone could love him this much, and awe that he could love somebody this much.
This feeling almost felt beyond him.
“C’mere, actually. Lemme read t’you.” He smiled, pulling her into his lap, adjusting her so she rested against the crook of his arm and on the armrest. Clearing his throat, he began reading the first line of the new chapter in her book, pulling her closer every time she would swoon quietly, so quietly, it almost sounded like a bubble in her throat.
Eventually, she takes over, giving him a chance to rest his voice. She croons the words softly, the utmost intimacy permeating the room as she reads the words of of the ivory colored page, committing the inked words to memory.
Breathing softly, her voice light and her hand on Harry’s which rested on her stomach, she read, “‘I realize, in this very moment, that love was the only thing missing from my life. And it’s the only thing that matters to me.’”
“Tha’s so me.” Harry states, making Y/N lift her head up from his chest.
“What?” She guffaws, laughs bubbling from her chest. “Oh my god, I’ve turned you into me.”
“Wha’ d’you mean?” He says confused.
“Never in my entire time of knowing you, Harry Styles, have you ever said ‘that’s so me’. I’m literally turning you into a carbon copy of me. Day by day, baby.” She grins, book face down on the couch so she can talk to him and keep her spot.
“Umm,” He giggles. “Well, y’kinda take up… like… 90 percent of my life. So, I was bound t’pick up your silly lingo.”
“Sure, baby. But, yeah- I agree. Love— our love, really, is one of the only things that matter to me. In a different universe, if I didn’t have this… if I didn’t have you? I think I would be so lost right now.”
“And in every single universe,” he whispers, pecking a soft kiss to her lips. “I will always find you. My perfect Sunny girl.”

i finished batgirl (2000) and i loved it so muchhhh i cant even put it into words aaaaaahhhh
anyways do you have any more recs for Cass, Steph or Babs bc i need more (also any fic recs too?)
OKOK so I recommend this reading list for both steph and cass by @/jlquarterly. they also have a more condensed reading list for steph and cass individually as well as more extensive ones for them too. overall just a great account to follow if you need reading lists.
Some overall reads that I recommend:
Cass:
Batman (1940) #567
Detective Comics (1937) #734
(No Man's Land in general is a good read for cass but these are considered her first appearances)
DC First: Batgirl/Joker
Superboy (1994) #85 (i love this issue it is very dear to me)
Steph:
Detective Comics (1937) #647-649
Secret Origins 80 Page Giant
honestly all of Robin 1993 starting with issue #3
Robin (1993) #88 (Steph and Cass first meeting)
Batman: Huntress/Spoiler- Blunt Trauma (HELENA AND STEPH YIPPEEE)
Batgirl (2009)
Babs:
The Batman Chronicles #5 (Oracle: Year One)
All of Birds of Prey 1999
General "batgirls" recs:
Convergence: Batgirl
Steph works in the medical field, the writers acknowledge her pregnancy, its about her relationship with the batgirl mantle, steph and cass live together and have a pet rat together, it's literally perfect
Batgirls
This is where we play the "pick and choose from canon" game
Fics:
Let's Not Talk About It by Procrastinationfairy
T - 4k
Summary: cass explores how words fail to describe feelings, especially in terms of attraction.
MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH
God this fic....here to start. I'm obsessed with the way it tackles cass’s feelings for steph and the lack of language she would have for her emotions…insane...Her anger at tim for not “properly mourning” steph
If taken, I'm yours by evanescent
T - 8k
Summary: Sheer determination is not everything, though, and after exactly eight seconds Stephanie finds herself laying flat on her back after getting knocked down with a very real-feeling baseball bat. For a moment, she thinks the strange sound is her ears ringing, but then she sits up and finds Batgirl standing next to Batman, her shoulder shaking slightly. She’s laughing, Stephanie realizes. Batgirl must catch her staring because she makes a quick, swiping motion with her hand.
“I think,” Batman says, and Stephanie wonders if she has a concussion after all, because he kind of sounds amused, “she’s telling you to be faster.”
In a world when you have your soulmate's first words to you imprinted in their handwriting somewhere on your body, the fact Stephanie can't decipher hers seems like the least of her problems, most of the time.
A really sweet rewrite of Steph as batgirl
ALSO EMILY DICKINSONS POETRY PLAYS A REALLY BIG ROLE IN THIS <3333
heroes and thieves at my door (i can't seem to tell them apart anymore) by hinn_raven
T - 4k
Summary: Bruce really can’t help but think that Stephanie Brown, pre-medicine, piano player, and honors student, with Leslie vouching for her, would be a far better girlfriend for his daughter than Spoiler, the new vigilante in town.
This one has me kicking and giggling every time i read it
It's delightful and funny and just an overall good time
Now Stick It Thick by thebodydies
E - 1k
Summary: Cass’s body always did exactly what Cass wanted. And now Steph’s body did as well.
nobody look at me
Highly recommend checking out all of Hinn_Raven's works especially if you're a steph fan!

CFWC Writer of the Month: the-pale-goddess
Tumblr media
Each month CFWC highlights one of our talented fanfic writers, and this month’s writer of the month is @the-pale-goddess! We hope you will enjoy learning more about her and her work below! The writer is selected at random. More info can be found on the navigation page.
Quick Links:
Tumblr Blog: the-pale-goddess Blog Masterlist
1- When did you start playing Choices? What was the first book you played?
I downloaded Choices in an extremely terrifying moment of my life in late 2019. I was seeing the ads everywhere and thought that this game might serve as a fairly decent distraction. Well, I wasn’t wrong skfjksjfk
I’m not sure which one was actually the first, but it was either the default TRR or Save The Date promoted at that time.
2- When and why did you join Choices fandom?
My obsession with Open Heart and Ethan Ramsey tied nicely with the release of the second book in 2020. The lockdown allowed me to explore this fictional world further, so I started looking for more content. I found the legendary Denise, aka @justanotherrookie, while lurking on IG. That’s when my long-forgotten Tumblr account came to my mind, and I logged in with the intention of scrolling through the tags to satisfy my EJR thirst.
3- How did you pick your blog name?
Oh, dear…It’s very silly! My skin is extremely pale and I have always been obsessed with music; hence the combo.
Fun fact: this account is quite old (though still not as old as my tumbroke card; I had like three other accounts before this one), and I was slightly embarrassed to enter a new fandom with my dusty aesthetic blog signed by some ominous name, but decided to go with the flow. Then the-pale-goddess has become my brand, and it was too late for any changes–anyone who has changed their URL knows how problematic blogging is afterward.
4- Pull up the first post in your archive, and tell us about it!
My first fandom post was inspired by the frustrating ending of the softball chapter AND the first hiatus announcement…It didn’t age well. As we all know, Ethan & MC didn’t ‘talk about it.’ What’s more, we had to survive a long OH drought before PB decided to resume the second book.
Three years later, the very same shitpost is still the most popular Choices post on my silly little blog lol
5- How long have you been writing fanfiction?
3 years, fanfiction is my pandemic baby! Though I’ve been writing since I was a kid, it was mostly poetry and never in English. But as time passed, I got more occupied with my teenage life and eventually lost motivation to write. That old passion resurfaced several years later, at the beginning of the pandemic. Apart from the obvious need for distraction from the COVID situation, I was frustrated that my English skills were getting rusty, so I decided to dive in.
6- What is your favorite Choices book, and what is your favorite Choices book to write about?
No surprise here: Open Heart (the first book) and Open Heart 😂 I never tried writing about any other Choices book.
7- Share the first fanfic you wrote with us. Do you still like it, or would you change it if you were writing it today?
Miami Heat aka my smutty Miami AU. The concept is brilliant, but the execution…Yikes! I often think of rewriting the entire thing because the writing is amateur at best and my inner perfectionist cringes whenever I think of this mini-series.
8- What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?
It all depends on my mood, so here’s a list of my favorites!
9- Do you have a fic that you didn’t expect to be well received, but it was? What about one you expected to be but found could use a little more love?
Cabin Fever - apparently this 69 plotless smut is iconic for some reason? I don’t really get the hype. It has an insane amount of kudos on ao3, my other fics can’t compare lol
Burnt - Book 1 mutual pining E&T classic and one of my absolute favorites (we’re talking top 3); it could definitely use a little more love!
10- If you could write only angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?
I’ll shock you all and say that I wish I could write fluff for the rest of my life kjgkdgjkdf But since I suck at it, I’d love to be stuck with angst and a dash of smut.
It’s probably a sad thing to admit, but I feel the most comfortable while writing angst. The realism of pain and the emotions that follow are simply very familiar, and it’s easy for me to conjure up a creative image to match the idea. Besides, there’s so much to explore in the angsty realm: all the flavor, nuance, layers, and symbolism. The possibilities are endless!
Smut doesn’t need an explanation, does it? I live on the thirst street 🤡
11- Do you ever recognize yourself in any of your MCs or in your writing?
I do. That’s probably why Open Heart got me sucked right in–OH MC felt very real and relatable, I couldn’t help but see bits of myself in her. Though we share many traits and experiences, Tiffany definitely isn’t an extension of me. I poured my heart and soul into this woman, but she has become her own person and I try to avoid self-projecting into her character unless there’s a clear purpose.
12- What element of writing do you struggle with most?
Recently, I have been struggling with writing in general lol The internet is ruthless!
My biggest issue is that self-loathing perfectionist who doesn’t let me enjoy the process, nothing seems to be good enough for her, and that attitude dims my motivation and hinders creativity.
On a more technical note, I absolutely suck at describing basic movement. I could churn out a long essay on a character’s internal struggle explaining the most complex emotions or a 4K elaborate smut, but when it comes to finding the right words to portray the simplest action, like walking down the stairs or setting the scene for an early morning conversation at the hospital, I feel lost kdhdkhdkdb
13- Do you have any neglected work you really want to finish?
Pretty much all of my WIPs are neglected 🤡 But here are the most important projects I’m hoping to finish at some point in the not-too-distant future:
Home With You AU
Past, Present, Future
My Way Home Is Through You
14- If someone you know in real life (who isn’t involved in fandoms) asked to read your work, would you let them? If yes, what would you recommend they read first?
Since fanfic is based on an existing work of fiction, and the core plotlines and characters should be well-known to the readers, I guess it could be a tedious and confusing read for someone who isn’t involved in the fandom. But then I have received comments from people unfamiliar with OH who have stumbled upon my fics and gave them a chance, so maybe I’m wrong lol
I like to think that I would be okay with sharing my works with someone I know and trust in real life, but let’s be honest: my crippling anxiety would stop me ksjfkjssd However, if I were to pick a fic rec, I’d choose Heaven Upside Down AU because it doesn’t need an extensive OH knowledge. Plus, I’m very proud of this series.
15 - Are there any writers (published authors and/or fanfic writers) who influenced your writing?
While I try to keep my writing style unique and simply mine, there are three lovely ladies who had a huge impact on my writing journey:
@writinghereandthere (aka an actual genius and my writing role model) was the direct source of inspiration behind my fanfic revelation. I fell in love with Ethan and Mariana, Ana’s beautiful prose, her wit, unparalleled talent, and fantastic characterization. Her writing changed the trajectory of my life. Though she left the fandom long ago, her masterlist is a must-read for everyone, trust me! (Ana, if you’re reading this: I miss you more than words can convey. Sorry for the spam I leave in your inbox every now and then skgjksgjk Hope to hear about your original work soon ❤️)
@starrystarrytrouble & @terrm9 - these two literary geniuses have inspired me to follow my own writing path and develop a distinctive style. Their masterpieces offer poetic, raw emotions, encouraging me to allow myself more creative freedom. I’m in constant awe of their unmatched talent and come back to their works whenever I want to feel things ❤️
16- Which one of your stories would you most like to see as a movie/series?
Can I have all of them, please?
I would pay all my money to watch a TV series based on my canon OH plotline…I’m not kidding, I even made a bunch of Netflix edits because I need it in my life. On the other hand, my precious AUs would look amazing on the big screen! The most scrumptious one still hasn’t left my head though, so you have to trust me–the cinematic potential is truly there kdgjkdgjk 17- Do you write original fiction?
I have a few ideas, but they’re so complex I’m stuck on the outlining phase. Mayhaps one day?
18 -  What other hobbies do you have?
I’m a certified music freak and a cinephile. I practice destroying male egos on a daily basis. I love photography, niche sports, playing with my dog, lifting people’s moods, random unhinged facts, and ignoring reality, and I have just entered my skincare expert era.
19 - What’s your favorite emoji?
🥰 + ✨ + 💀
These three emojis perfectly encapsulate who I am as a person, I think: full of love and magic, but also dead inside ksjgksjgks
20: BONUS - tell us anything you’d like (if you want to)
I’d like to thank our lovely admins for giving me this exciting opportunity to ramble about my tiny corner on this hellsite and showcase my word vomit. My heart is full of gratitude! I may not be as active as I used to be, and real life doesn’t allow me to change that, but our fandom will always have a special place in my heart, and I feel very lucky to be a part of this community. Thank you for still putting up with me and supporting my fictional world ❤️❤️❤️

What's your favorite book man
Hello Mr. Madeline 🥛🌙
My favorite book is probably Dhalgren by Samuel R. Delany, a sci-fi, transgressive fiction novel that I believe is just an all-around allegory for low income LGBT neighborhoods & community in 70s New York as a lot of the events seem oddly reminiscent of such.
It’s about 896 pages (in my edition the pages are compressed to 801, if I remember correctly as it’s to save for more pages) & it’s just about this character who randomly steps into a burning city and lots of ppl are black for some reason & everyone’s living under bridges and shit, all they do is try to ease living in the sci-fi ghettos & fight overpowered assholes with bloodlust referred to as ‘scorpions,’ among the people in the city, who use odd energy shields to transform into large animals (ex: chickens, dogs, dragons and actual scorpions)
Over time you kinda realize the main character is not a good person but that’s literally at around page 200 so you’re just stuck going through the book knowing he’s weird as fuck. The character doesn’t know their own name so they go by: Kidd; there’s also a journal that’s found at the beginning of the book and people try to find the author of it.
Reasons I like it:
1) The writing is honestly the best writing I’ve ever seen. Starting off with the book you might be confused but you actually get the hang of it (depending on who you are & your understanding of possibly poetry) as the writing feels almost cryptic at times but the cogs shift and you realize: oh wow, this is actually insane
1.5) The writing feels as if it left a residue on my writing altogether. Samuel R. Delany is probably one of the best writers living today & I find myself resorting to his work at times to figure out unanswered questions in my head about writing in general. I don’t copy him nor “borrow” anything from him as my work focuses a lot on internal monologue & consciousness as a whole but he practically helped me realize what writing can be.
2) The parallels to my actual life. This one is more personal & exclusive to me (and maybe anyone else?) but things in the book began to transpire at the same time similar events happened in my life. (ex: the main character becomes a poet around the time I was already writing poetry & he goes on this spiral about trying to publish his work around the same time I have)
3) The aura behind reading a large book. Reading a Bible-sized novel is honestly something I’ve never been able to do but wanted to since I was 7. I remember picking up Eragon (the books with the funky looking dragons sprawled on the cover) & taking it home trying to read it but my ADHD wouldn’t allow me to continue after 10 pages. A large book to me is like an exercise and a temporary change in life. You wake up with a book to read; it’s practically a part of your life—and due to its length—it is; the book has made itself a focal point & something you need to tend to (not in a weird obsessive manner).
4) Samuel R. Delany essentially making it a book that “drones on” without “reaching any point.” I didn’t know it droned on without reaching much climax but it doesn’t bother me. Not all books exactly need one and I didn’t know it was a thing until Dhalgren was mine; just like in point 1), Samuel R. Delany is showing the reader just what a novel can be and how extreme one can stray from general literary norms & still sell millions of copies regardless of this big part of it. As much as this can be a turn off: I see it as just experiencing the world around the characters and seeing how they live, how they think, what their society is like & all in all just a study of the people in ‘Bellona.’
5) The opening line is one of the most iconic lines in all of literature; it’s a fragment of a presumed poem that tends to kick in randomly throughout the book.
6) I expected Sci-fi and it overall became probably the most randomly profound erotic novel I’ve ever heard of—and I don’t know how I feel about that part but it’s definitely a wide shift from the norm (Which is why it’s considered transgressive fiction).
7) Near the end is a chapter (I haven’t reached yet) in which the text is split into what would be considered “hypertext” and there’s just text resting in horizontal rows & columns, some in bold and others in italics, some in boxes & some in basic horizontal paragraph & I really want to know why
• • •
Long ass explanation but I love to write
Thank you, I love & appreciate you

20 Questions for Writers
Tagged by @oakashandwillow
1. How many works do you have on AO3? 42...the perfect number
2. What's your total AO3 word count? just shy of 500k which is an insane number
3. What fandoms do you write for? >_> look. is the top fandom on my ao3 page supernatural: yes. am I still actively posting spn fic: technically also yes. but the incoherent scum villain tweets that don't make it onto ao3 are where my heart truly lies rn
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
#1 and #2 are the double header of Cumplane (Pairing), an in-universe meta for @cleromancy's threadfic, and Cumplane Forums AU, an archive of @flightlesscrowkids's communal threadfic that I shamelessly enabled. #5 on the list is also a scum villain chatfic, It's Fine Cause I'm Wearing Cat Ears, where shen yuan is still insane on the modern internet but this time binghe and liu qingge are there. thank you cucumber stans for your support and good taste.
#3 is my untamed big bang from these nettles, alms which I cowrote with @zorrosuchil (chengxian, but also wangxian and a lil tiny bit zhanchengxian, much to jiang cheng's disgruntlement).
#4 is my pacific rim reverse bang Our Blood in the Machinery in which raleigh becket is possessed, but joke's on you, he's into that shit.
5. Do you respond to comments? I try but unfortunately I often give myself the fake homework of needing to reply Meaningfully which means it simply does not happen
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? hmm probably the most it-didn't-have-to-be-this-way classic tragedy fic is The Dismemberment Song (the untamed, nieyao); the deadest dove is Jettison (pacific rim, hansens badtouch)
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I was going to say Only Human but then I remembered the last chapter ends with one of the main characters announcing her imminent demise lmao so perhaps my cql fix-it of Waking / Rising
8. Do you get hate on fics? thankfully not, I don't think they get enough attention to have haters lmao
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? only for siblings
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? fandom fusions are my faaaaavorite to spitball. way back in the day I had grand plans for Merlispn which (as the name should make clear) was very silly
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? not to my knowledge but cambionverse did once get cited in an academic paper
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? funnily enough one of my smallest and least-viewed spn fics, Driftwood, was translated into chinese!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? nearly all of them in fact! shout out to @thegeminisage and our series Cambionverse which is old enough to be in middle school now
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? I am a multishipper til death do us part ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? fuckin. Envesseled lmfao. ON GOD WE WILL POST THE LAST FIVE CHAPTERS I JUST DON'T KNOW WHEN
16. What are your writing strengths? *eye* think my own jokes are very funny hahaha and I love to write banter & arguments
17. What are your writing weaknesses? I can brainstorm plots all day long but executing upon them is So Hard
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? as a monolingual it is something I would do very sparingly if at all, and only if there wasn't another way to convey the same tone/emotion
19. First fandom you wrote for? the first thing I ever posted to ao3 was The Quest for Camelot which is found poetry from the merlin fic finders comm. before livejournal I did post a few things to ff.net but they are going with me to the grave
20. Favorite fic you’ve written? listen. I understand why it deals psychic damage for my followers to see supernatural content in the year of our lord 20 whatever. but read Cambion those are my kids

Interview with the vampire episode 5 review:
No wonder I don’t like this version of Claudia. They merged her with Baby Jenks. And I always found Baby Jenks a bit insulting.  That character actually was fourteen-years-old and very vapid.  When I first read the novel Queen of the Damned I was fourteen and characters like Baby Jenks in The Queen of The Damned and Mona Mayfair in the Lives of the Mayfair Witches both insulted me.
Now we have Bruce AKA Killer with his motorcycle and talking about The Fang Gang.  I never expected Claudia to be merged with Baby Jenks.
Claudia’s questioning of if she’ll always be a virgin because she heals down there is right out of True Blood. This isn’t Claudia.  It’s Jessica from True Blood merged with Baby Jenks.
Louis somehow psychically triggered a serious Parkinson’s tremor in Daniel and got a well-deserved slap for it. Claudia is being abused by Bruce.  There’s no elegance in this.  It’s cynical and rather mean spirited and that’s saying something when it’s a vampire story.  There’s no charm, no Gothic poetry.  It’s so... shallow. They even off-handedly tell you Lestat’s not a reader. That he reads the first ten or eleven pages of books to seem “cultured.”  Lestat loved to read in the novels.
Yet again all the characters say that Claudia’s emotional state is the result of perpetual puberty so it’s dismissive. Lestat nearly killed Louis because he was going to leave him.  WTF?!  That is literally the opposite of his character in the books!    This version of Lestat behaves more like Armand, it’s insane. Having Claudia want to kill Lestat because he’s physically abusive to Louis really, really bothers me. They amplified Lestat’s abandonment issues to make him a violent and self-absorbed asshole.
Even hearing the audio preview for the next episode with Daniel mockingly saying “He only beat me the one time, officer.” really bothers me.  It’s cynical and dismissive of cycles of abuse for the sake of plot drama that wasn’t even in the book!
This show runner is awful.   He’s just an awful human being.   His commentary on the behind the scenes video of episode 5 shows his nature.  This is a terrible person running this show.  He trivializes and even seems to mock domestic violence and abuse.   The fact that they added physical and sexual abuse really rubs me the wrong way.  How are we ever supposed to potentially sympathize with Lestat later when he’s portrayed like this?   He would never, ever, ever have harmed Louis in the books, no matter what he did. Something that bugs me is the showrunner actually behaves as if Claudia being raped by Bruce / Killer was some sort of righteous punishment to make her realize her homelife isn’t that bad.  It’s victim blaming for any vulnerable person, especially runaway, or homeless, child who gets sexually assaulted.  And it really rubs me the wrong way.  It’s like the guy hates teenagers, especially girls.  It’s agist and misogynistic and I’m saying this as a forty-year-old woman.   This show is cynical, mean-spirited, unsubtle, in-your-face, blatant, exploitive, and crass. This episode in particular, with its blatant use of modern domestic abuse, and implied sexual abuse, is just mean spirited and it feels exploitive.  I went from disliking this show to starting to feel disgusted by it.

poetry / playscripts - bright dead things, ada limon - dancing in odessa, ilya kaminsky - anecdotal evidence, wendy cope - postcolonial love poem, natalie diaz - cock, mike bartlett (play) on its own, a fairly weak script that’s core concept is “is bisexuality real?” HOWEVER i got my hands on the audio version of the 2009 production with andrew scott, ben whishaw and katherine parkinson and it is absolutely marvelous!!! totally elevates the writing imo - cat on a hot tin roof, tennessee williams (play) - fleabag, the scriptures, phoebe waller-bridge (script)
graphic novels i don’t really read a lot of graphic novels but while trying to break my slump i wanted to be more open to different types of fiction! most of these are short series (5 volumes or less!) - maus I & II, art spiegelman (read in the first half of the year when it became a banned book. devastating and beautiful) - the book tour, andi watson - the delicacy, james albon - the me you love in the dark, skottie young
fiction ok this is long but i wanted to give you my (brief) thoughts on each one!!! the bright lands, john fram (horror) a quarterback goes missing and his brother, shamed out of their small town ten years ago for being gay, returns to find him. this one is hands down the best book i’ve read this year & been chasing the high of reading it since i finished!!! and OKAY i understand that maybe doesn’t sound exciting but trust me it’s a fucking banger and so worth all the football talk, please read it!!!! - thin air, michelle paver (horror, ghosts!) michelle paver is my no 1 arctic ghost queen!!! imo not as good as dark matter, but still so so good. - the last house on needless street, catriona ward (horror) batshit insane, go into this as blind as possible, but be warned it’s v trigger heavy. If you have any q about them i will try to answer as non spoilery as possible. - the hacienda, isabel canas (horror, ghosts!) feels very ‘rebecca’ in the beginning but swiftly moves into it’s own realm of magical realism and the sexual tension between beatriz and the priest that helps her....oof. the ending made me cry. - the last thing to burn, will dean (horror, psychological thriller) big fan of will’s tuva series but his stand alones have been hit and miss (didn’t care for first born) but this one was suffocating, i devoured it in a day. - the count of monte cristo, alexandre dumas (classic, adventure) i read the three musketeers last year and enjoyed it, but absolutely adored the count! dumas has a compelling voice that makes reading 1200 pages fly by - the daughter of doctor moreau, silvia moreno-garcia (science fiction, retelling) much more science fiction-y then i usually go for but i ended up enjoying it more than i thought! - dracula, bram stoker (classic, horror) i mean we all read it this year right! jon x mina 4ever - dubliners, james joyce (classic, short stories) can’t say i enjoyed all the stories in this collection, (my faves were araby, eveline, a little cloud, clay and the dead) but i listened to it via audio read by andrew scott…. absolutely stunnin - small things like these, claire keegan (historical fiction, novella) a sweet christmas time book about ireland's infamous magdalene laundries. ends on a very uplifting note!!
would love to hear what your favourites have been!!! love giving and receiving book recs so pls 🙏

My dear, if I had not sent this letter tomorrow morning for you to receive it Monday after this so arid Sunday, I think I would have waited until the night passed to write to you, for I find myself this evening in such a state of nerves, of extreme fatigue and of dry despair that I can only hope for one thing, a peaceful sleep that does not seem to come. I would have liked to go to bed early, taking advantage of the day off.  It's 1:30 in the morning and I've just gone to bed at the last minute. That's my day.
After a short night (five and a half hours of sleep) and ploughing through insane nightmares, I got up at 7:30, weary, dumb, empty mind, absent heart, my eyes cloudy and shivering from the cold. At 9 o'clock, after looking for a taxi for twenty minutes, I finally arrived at the radio station.  With a hoarse, broken voice, I mumbled the text of a few scenes from The Exchange, but as Germaine Montero was shooting and had to leave at 10:30, we didn't finish the recording, as we had planned. They kept me there until half past twelve - on the pretext of working on my monologue - but for the sole reason that we had to occupy the studios that we'd booked for a certain number of hours until the last minute. I went home, already in a very bad mood. The tyranny of the administration is not made to please me, and my lunch with Wattier lasted until 3:30. She kept talking about numbers, trade ratings, gold weight values, foals, dealers, etc. I was in a very bad mood.
At 3:30 p.m., Pitou had to come. So I waited for her without doing anything at first, until 4:30. I took a book. The first Proust. I hung on to the first page. At 5 o'clock, Pitou called. She could not come. I read all the time. With Angeles being out, she won't be back until tomorrow morning. I prepared and served dinner. Dad was in a bad way. He couldn't talk, let alone eat. From 10:00 to 11:00, we wanted to watch the "Who Are You?" quiz together, but Dad was getting worse and worse and he was getting angry. I decided to get him ready for the night and go to bed. It was 11 o'clock. Alas! By the time I tried to clean the heater, it was too late. The fire was almost out, the stove was cold. Then a scene began - I'll spare the details - in which I tried to convince my father to let me turn it on again. There was nothing to be done. He got more and more angry. He could talk less and less. Just bits and pieces of words. Helpless gestures. Coughing. Choking. I gave up and took the electric heater to his room. Then I helped him change his pajamas. Dream! We started at a quarter to midnight and finished at a quarter to one. An hour and a half to take off a jacket, a wool shirt, and put on a shirt, a jacket, and a sweater! As for me, I didn't burst into tears by some miracle. I could no longer feel pain, pity, helplessness and love.
Now here I am. A little spiky, a little twisted. I'm in pain, my darling, in all that pain you can't do anything about. And this day after day, month after month, year after year. How can he? At last! Let's wait until tomorrow. The first shot of serum. Let's hope so. I've reread your letter. Oh! Yes, you're better and life comes flooding back and I hear again the familiar words ("useless vertigo") and again the fury and the lyricism and the poetry and the demands ("be austere, wear strict clothes, cloister yourself"). Ah! how I love it when you demand! Yes, my darling, here you are strong again, triumphant, alive, wrapped again in all your characters, closed, defended, armed. And if it is infinitely sweet to have you against me, stripped of everything, naked and shivering, I am deeply happy to know you as you are at this moment. Work, laugh, eat, sleep and come back to me radiant with happiness. Oh my love! I'm stopping - tomorrow morning I'll go on. I'll read. I would like to forget myself a little. Good night, darling.
Maria Casarès to Albert Camus, Correspondance, January 20, 1950 [#139]

Enthralling Introduction of Maiden
Glimpses of enchanting ladylove shall paint your conundrum twinkle, for its heavenly to become the sanctum of mankind; Warmest biddings, the name is Okta Arunika—enraptured damsel by the touch of moonbeam. You can simply address me with Okta, Ta, Tata, or any pet names you would love to dedicate for me. I mostly use Jennie, Minju, and Krystal Jung as my faceclaim. My MBTI goes along the line of INFP, with Libra as my zodiac sign and Words of Affirmation as my primary love language. I have reached the legal age, thus rest assured.
Poetical arranged words are something I hold dearly into the depth of my ribcages, for I writes repeatedly—like inhaling amount of air. Poetry is the sweet religion I devoted myself into. Aside that, I am also a huge bookworm, where I put my nose upon the flipping pages of books. I do digital drawing and watercolor painting, where I sketch and try my best to sculpture the scenery surrounding me. My solace of idyllic interest lies on the archaic touch of art, photography, graphic design, and of course, literary.

Aku hanya ingin memberikan kasihku walau pikirku bersimbah luka, aku percaya bahwa kau ialah obatnya. ”

Weird Writer Questions - 5 and 16 and… all of them?
Aw man, I'm so tempted to answer all of them 😂 I answered a few over here already, but as for the rest ... let's see ...
5. Do you have any writing superstitions? What are they and why are they 100% true? Not that I can think of ... although, come to think of it, I'm currently petrified about posting anything that's a WIP with the intention of posting chapters incrementally because I left a fully-framed one abandoned in my last fandom and I'm convinced it'll end up the same way. (I'm almost 10k into a Silrah WIP, which considering my longest work to date was 30k is a lot, and yet it hides in GoogleDocs ...)
16. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever used as a bookmark? On a temporary basis I've used all sorts of wild things because it's literally what's on hand. My normal bookmarks are pretty pedestrian. (This is more of a reader ask, isn't it? 🤣)
Additional answers behind the cut because ... well:
1. What font do you write in? Do you actually care or is that just the default setting? So it's not the font that's notable, it's probably the size. I work in GoogleDocs on my phone, and I'm normally using 8pt Arial. (And yes, that's tiny. And yes, I'm probably a bit insane.) I tend to do my final editing pass in Times or another serif font because it's easier to find the italics for coding, but that's about it.
2. If you had to give up your keyboard and write your stories exclusively by hand, could you do it? If you already write everything by hand, a) are you a wizard and b) pen or pencil? I enjoy writing longhand, though I like the conversion from paper to digital as part of the editing process. Some of how I write -- when I shuffle things around, for example -- would be impossible on paper, though. I'll take a hybrid. (Standard gear: Clairefontaine pocket notebook, Platinum EF fountain pen, various inks.)
6. What is your darkest fear about writing? That nobody likes my stuff because I am a walking bundle of anxiety. Also, not finishing, sob.
7. What is your deepest joy about writing? I really love those moments when you're deep enough into a character's head that you write something down and then end up blinking at the page going, "oh. OH. I never thought about that but it makes perfect sense." (Also, getting a sentence just right, especially if someone swears at me about it later.)
8. If you had to write an entire story without either action or dialogue, which would you choose and how would it go? Okay wait. Is this action as in "action movies" action or as in any sort of movement? Because if the former: BYE ACTION. If the latter, dialogue is getting yeeted SO FAST.
9. Do you believe in ghosts? This isn’t about writing I just wanna know 😂 The house my unbrothers grew up in was haunted and had serious horror-movie-type dolls at the top of the stairs. I'm pretty sure I never had a choice in believeing.
10. Has a piece of writing ever “haunted” you? Has your own writing haunted you? What does that mean to you? Flippant answer: I'm haunted by the ghosts of all the fics I never finished, and they're obnoxious bastards.
11. Do you believe in the old advice to “kill your darlings?” Are you a ruthless darling assassin? What happens to the darlings you murder? Do you have a darling graveyard? Do you grieve? ... does it count if I bring them back? Asking for pretty much every damned ship I've ever had because damn you, canon. (No. I do not murder my darlings. Canon does it, and then I have to fix it. 😭)
Oh man I want to answer so many more of these, except I promised myself I'd write tonight so I'm mostly stopping here ... except for one because I am a goddamned sucker for poetry. (Please feel free to drop more in my inbox if you want though, especially if I didn't hit a specific one you wanted. I will take just about any excuse to babble, hi. 😂)
40. Please share a poem with me, I need it. George Seferis is my current obsession; here's a short one:
Three red pigeons in the light inscribing our fate in the light with colours and gestures of people we once loved

finished my task early and realized that as a byproduct of our capitalist society, im unfortunately happier when i do tasks. here are my rankings of persona 5 awakenings spanning from vanilla to strikers. and i watched all of them again just so i wasn’t biased. i will also be attaching the splash pages they have of the group during awakening scenes because theyre fucking awesome
excluded:
morgana - no awakening, very sad
akechi - just a reveal, but an awesome reveal
10. okumura haru
Tumblr media
it feels like a lie to even say she got an awakening, because they didnt even let her rip off her mask. they gave her a half awakening like it was on clearance. sad stuff, couldve been amazing, instead felt underwhelming since there was no lethargic high point where you feel her anger. i liked the gun reveal though
9. sakura futaba
Tumblr media
same deal as haru, no mask ripping part :( that part of awakenings are very important to me, since its like, the whole deal with awakening your persona. its supposed to hurt, cause it hurts to throw away your facade and be who you really are!! also it just felt long and drawn out, making the tension feel...untensed. pliable, if you will. ranks higher than haru cause it still made me cry--futaba truly has one of the toughest and heart-wrenching motivations to persona awakenings, truly.
8. niijima Makoto
Tumblr media
no splash page for her which makes me sad. love how gritty her mask + scream were afterwards, you can really feel the impact of it. also, editing was great during this scene. ranks low (high?) on the list though because it was pretty unremarkable overall--thats because makoto’s awakening/arc is pretty detached from who she is. its not very personal, since the conflict isn’t specifically about her you know?
7. Kitagawa Yusuke
Tumblr media
a fan favorite and im sorry i couldnt rank it in a better spot. loved the camera work, loved the dialogue and his speech afterwards. it really is poetry infused with pissed-off and ready for revenge. if only the mask removal scene was grittier!! i like seeing them in pain!! it shouldnt be easy to take off the mask!!
6. takamaki ann
Tumblr media
beautiful spectacular awakening that always makes me cry, but docked many points off because of how sexual it is. why are they focusing on her torso when shes crying. enough with the jiggle physics. stop that!!
her rage and swearing is so on point, and i am in love with how she mows down her shadow self in one go. so cool. love ann.
5. Hasegawa Zenkichi
Tumblr media
another fan favorite and its also one of mine as well. yall im just so emotional that an adult actually got a persona awakening. like, an adult who wants change just as desperately as the young people do? that means so much to me. dialogue is great, shadows are great. his mask ripping scene was so fucking intense that he snapped his mask in half like thats so rad
4. yoshizawa sumire
Tumblr media
yeah yeah whatever i love her awakening ok. its big cheating that she got two on camera awakenings, but the first one sucked so its fine. the second one is just so great and i love how quiet the music is . where some awakenings feel very disjointed and impersonal, hers was arguably the most personal out of all of them. like she saw her sister?? and that was what made her awaken for real this time?? fantastic. also her mask removal scene was so intense and i loved that nothing happened at first because it makes you think that something is still wrong. hated the first awakening though--why the magical girl sequence?? what the fuck
3. Sophia
Tumblr media
hehe her awakening is so fucking good. from the line read to the dialogue. this was the only awakening (besides jokers but ill get to that) that truly caught me off guard. i didnt expect that, even though it was the only logical conclusion to her character arc. brillaint. and i cant stress this enough--the line reads. the line reads. are so good.  thank you VA from puyo puyo tetris lmfao
2. Kurusu Akira
Tumblr media
no splash page for him either but i will forgive it since hes the first. this one fucked me over because one: the animation was amazing, two, he awakened for ryuji, and three, his mask removal scene is the best of them all. you can feel every centimeter of his mask forcibly peeling away from his skin and i love it. also, this one scared the fuck out of me because when i bought p5, i didnt know what a fucking persona was. i thought this was like, a high school adventure. so yeah, this had a big impact on me
1. sakamoto Ryuji
Tumblr media
look man. this boy is just so angry. so fucking angry, and so intense about his feelings, and so desperate to help, and all of that accumulates to being the best awakening. where akira has the best mask ripping scene, he has the best scream after he rips his mask--you could feel that shit in your throat, in your lungs, the vibrations in your head. not to mention, he was the only one who was allowed to look fucking insane--rolling on the carpet and shit, sweating his heart out. i love how gritty it is.
Those are my opnions thanks for coming to my ted talk

everyone’s been doing them end of year lists, here i guess is mine:
royal road, by wulian daxiao trans. halfdeadhulijing -- the novel that’s convinced me that what i’ve really been missing in all the novels (web and otherwise) i’ve been reading is 3-page sequences detailing individual events leading to the fall of the western jin dynasty
david lowry’s the green knight, a movie specifically made for the demographic of Me
jean garrigue’s the ego and the centaur, which i picked up at random while trying for several hours to get a library scanner to work -- it didn’t but the poetry was worth it
also her studies for an actress and other poems. i am very picky about poetry and she hits it dead-on
many and various child ballads but especially tam lin, versions A through N, which i have come back to yet again like an old dog to its master
the poem “sea change” (nothing not even time can keep the water out!!!)
[redacted], a magazine from 114 years ago as of tomorrow, full of articles by several quite famous people and many others no-one today has ever heard of
moon knight volume 5 issues 1-6, the first comic i’ve read in a while that really knows what a comic is;
orhan pamuk’s the white castle, a book which i could swear i had read before but i feel like i would remember something that makes me so absolutely insane about doubling and mirrors and memory
dessa’s album ides.
(bonus: [redacted], the f/f novel i found several days ago, read one page of, and then immediately started translating so my friend can also read it)

i’ve been marathoning the harry potter movies since im in quarantine and i’ve been taking some notes. i’ll post them all bc why not
sorcerer’s stone
harry knowing that there’s no post on sunday,, a genius
hedwig’s theme playing when harry looks out of the window and sees an owl flying by, very nice
hagrid doing magic at the house on the rock thing,, wouldnt the ministry be able to track that?? since there’s no wizard that lives there, they should be alerted?? or did they remove the trace from hagrid once he got expelled?? like does it work by the trace only or? bc if it doesn’t work by location then how would they know that a muggle witnessed the magic?? idk anymore
the kids staring at the nimbus 2000 and saying its the fastest model yet,, then the camera zooming on the handle w/ the background blurred -> the most straight forward foreshadowing
hagrid is actually the worst person to take harry on his tour situation,, like bro literally left him in the middle of a train station
the weasleys and harry going to the platform while theres a shit ton of ppl walking around,,, statute of secrecy where??
the great hall is on the first floor?? i thought it was on the ground floor
ew the hats
i wish the movies had dumbledore’s weird few words speeches
“theres not one witch or wizard that went bad that wasnt in slytherin” broooo
mcgonagall is so savage i love her
snape is an asshole
a crap ton of chessboards in the great hall study hall scene,, foreshadowing the challenges?
madam hooch really yeeted herself out of neville’s way
✨🥰 oliver wood 🥰✨✨
harry really wiped the troll buggers on his robe,, disgusting
snapes hair is lowkey on fleek tho,,
making most of the slytherins ugly bc they’re the “evil” house is just a disservice to all the inbreeding
hermione setting snape on fire is truly iconic and very extra tbh like sis why tf would u know a spell like that
seasonal transition wasnt that great tbh
overall the directing style is kinda basic
“not in the restricted section,,” rule breaking hermione is the best hermione
dumbledore’s handwriting is so extra and loopy like tf?? but it fits his character
the hedwig flying season transition was good
“immortal?” “it means you’ll never die.” “i know what it means!”
50 points each for being out of bed??? wtf is this point system
filtch saying there’s werewolves in the forbidden forest,,, thats illegal sir
hagrid calling the trio by their first names but draco by his last,, we love favoritism
harry’s thoughts r so ridiculous,, “snape doesnt want the stone for himself, he wants it for voldemort!” lmaoo wtf,, evidence pls sir,, u don’t even know he was a death eater. was it the bad vibes?? bc same
harry figuring out that the person who gave hagrid the dragon egg is voldy,, a genius
“kill us faster?? now i can relax!!” ron is so iconic i love him
“lucky we didnt panic!” “lucky hermione pays attention in herbology”
how is it that harry’s hand burned quirrel but not the skin on harry’s neck?? that shit makes no sense
yeah i really cant imagine this dumbledore fighting voldy in movie 5
hermione’s headband in the reunion scene is so cute i love it
chamber of secrets:
how is dobby even allowed to just jump on the bed?? like is it bc harry isnt his master that he can do smth like that
“dobby has heard about harry potter’s kindness” or whatever,, bro u work for the malfoys either the elves gossip or draco is waxing poetry about harry
aunt petunia saying “we have ice-cream” after that whole affair is just ridiculous
DIAGONALLY
this seems like the extended version bc i dont remember the borgin and bruks scene to be that long
the close ups with lucius and ginny’s books r insane lmao like chris columbus made it so obvious
also mr weasley’s acting is so funny like its so exaggerated
lucius malfoy is so dramatic and extra we love it
also lucius knowing hermione’s name and “draco’s told me all about you”??? bro whats with draco?? lmaoo
snape really got mad with the whole car business
mandrakes r fucking weird bro how did jkr come up with that
PERCY WALKING WITH PENELOPE CLEARWATER??? HOW DID I MISS THAT??
omg colin had so many lines?? wow
omg erol with the fucking howler,, iconic
ron’s facial expressions?? pure comedy, rupret is so good
LOCKHEART REALLY SAID “GOOD GIRL” THEN WINKED AT HERMIONE
“pesky piksy pescinomy” this bitch dumb
“why is it always me?” poor neville
omfg ✨🥰 oliver wood 🥰✨
ahh using the seeker position for fighting
ew draco used the m-word
the shit the basilisk is saying is so lame lmaoo
how does harry not recognize that he’s hearing a different language?? or does parsaltongue act weird
HOW IS THE WHOLE SCHOOL IN THE SAME CORRIDOR???
“i know the counter-curse that could’ve spared her” bitch the dirty looks he got?? omfg
the movies would’ve been 500% better if they had lee jordan’s iconic quidditch commentary
“scarhead” “TRAINING FOR THE BALLET, POTTER?”
“what did you expect?? pumpkin juice??” madam pomfery is a queen
dobby is dumb dumb
“who am i, hedwig? what am i?”
“reading? i didnt know you could read?”
“look at my face” “look at your tail!”
“you can’t cancel quidditch!”
“oh harry, if you die down there, you’re welcome to share my toilet”
lockheart: do you live here? ron: no *smacks him in the head with a rock*
“voldemort is my past, present and future” are all slytherins this dramatic??
the tension between hermione and ron in the last feast was insane
justin filtch fletchy is so ugly im so sorry i cant
prisoner of azkaban:
im sorry but harry doing underage illegal magic pisses me off every time
aunt marge 🤢
“do they use a cane boy?” “oh yeah, i’ve been beaten loads of times”
that whole scene is so chaotic
“you cant do magic outside of school!” “oh yeah? try me”
sirius really dumb for barking at harry like it makes no sense
the knight bus is probably one of the best things in this movie
“whatcha doing down there??” “i fell over” “whacha fell over for?” “i didnt do it on purpose!” “well come on then, lets not wait for the grass to grow”
harry leans over and looks for the grim, stan: “whatcha looking at?”
“yeah take it away ernie,, its gonna be a bumpy ride”
this whole thing is written and directed so perfectly
i hate how they replaced tom bc it really made no sense
all the bits of magic in the leaky caldron is so genius
fudge reminds me of trump but like dumber
the blue lighting and coloring is just great, it fits the colder vibe of the story (not like HBP with the hazy/blurry effect)
ugh the glass and mirror transitions are one of my favorite things,, alfonso curon really did that
i love the weasleys,, also everyone looks great in this movie
omg the scene with arthur talking to harry about sirius with the sirius poster always being in sight?? amazing
contrast of light and darkness just echos the whole dementor vs patronus situation
i dont even understand why remus took the train other than for the nostalgia
the lights slowly turning off in the different carriages?? amazing
the visual representation of the dementors’ effect is great
REMUS!!!
i wish there was more emotion from remus when he’s talking about sirius,, like that was one of his only friends
snape clapping literally twice for remus,, ajhshsh
ahh the placement of the slytherin and gryffindor tables right beside each other to increase the tension and further the plot
oh yea the new dumbledore, also cool hat he has
omg the new fat lady painting
omg the candy scene?? so cute i love lads being lads. that scene just echo’s dumbledore’s light in the dark quote bc its storming outside at night and they’re creating a happy environment within the dark especially with the dementors
ah yes the clock references + following the bird to show us important parts of hogwarts and putting the whomping willow in the forefront
ron’s reading of harry’s tea leaves,, still on point tho. ron really has a knack for divination
buckbeak! omg drapple
draco is so hot especially with that ring also the slytherin pins??
“oh yeah, terribly funny, really witty. god, this place has gone to the dogs”
the kids look so messy i love it + harry’s uneven tie
HERMIONE CLINGING TO RONS ARM!!
“its killed me! your gonna regret this, you and your bloody chicken”
omg the boggart lesson
“riddikulus!” “this class is ridiculous”
fuck snape!
draco really pushed someone with his bandaged arm
remus is such an amazing professor i love him and i just miss him so much
ugh harry in this hoodie?? amazing
remus and harry’s conversation with the music :(( lily :((
wtf is that eye painting??
percy screaming about being head boy,, bro stfu
sirius is such a dramatic little bitch i love it
seasonal changes marked by the wimping willow
“turn to page 394”

Meeting Your Maker
Another essay I wrote for school.  This one’s about 4 pages and is a reading of Susan Stryker’s  My Words to Victor Frankenstein above the Village of Chamounix, for the benefit of my composition 101 class.
In “My Words to Victor Frankenstein above the Village of Chamounix: Performing Transgender Rage,” Susan Stryker makes an emotionally-powerful statement to the world which has rejected her as a transsexual woman by mobilizing a critical reading of Mary Shelley’s foundational science fiction novel, Frankenstein, to give an account of her situation and to make the case for the transformative power of rage against all that is supposed to be natural from the position of the unnatural. It was originally delivered as a performance piece at California State University in 1993 as part of a conference aimed at theorizing rage.
Stryker grabs the attention of the reader immediately with a few short, rapid-fire sentences: “The transsexual body is an unnatural body. It is the product of medical science. It is a technological construction.” Next, she begins to explain what she means and presents the essential analogy of the piece, adding “It is flesh torn apart and sewn together again in a shape other than that in which it was born. In these circumstances, I find a deep affinity between myself as a transsexual woman and the monster in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.” This identification with the monster’s unnatural origin is central to the piece, but the monster’s rage with its creator and the entirety of the world from which it is excluded is also essential. These two themes, that her body is unnatural and that this unnaturalness is the basis of an exclusion which she feels as an enraging pain, work together to drive the piece to its conclusions.
The tendency to associate transgender bodies with Mary Shelley’s work predates Stryker’s work, though.“I am not the first to link Frankenstein’s monster and the transsexual body,” (Stryker 2) she clarifies. She proceeds to quote the transphobic remarks of Mary Daly and Janice Raymond, a pair of influential feminists, comparing transgender people to Frankenstein’s monster. Her response is to return to the text, arguing that the monster importantly appears in the story as Frankenstein’s “...dark, romantic double,” (Stryker 2) She asks what making such comparisons between transgender people and the Monster might imply about the people making them, “Might I suggest that Daly, Raymond and others of their ilk similarly construct the transsexual as their own particular golem?” (Stryker 2)
Stryker doesn’t shrink away from the monstrous associations such transphobic feminists make, instead she embraces the archetype, turning on them the way the monster turned on its maker. She says, “When such beings as these tell me I war with nature, I find no more reason to mourn my opposition to them—or to the order they claim to represent—than Frankenstein’s monster felt in its enmity to the human race.” (Stryker 3) Indeed, she does not shrink away from these critics’ company, she roars “...gleefully away from it like a Harley-straddling, dildo- packing leatherdyke from hell.” (Stryker 3)
Examining what it means to be labelled a creature, Stryker says that it is essentially to be something (presumably something with a subjective experience) which is created rather than appearing naturally. She does not elaborate on the reasoning behind this premise, but goes a step further to say that people take offense at being called or compared to creatures precisely because most people are accustomed to affording themselves a higher status, that of creator rather than created. Her reactive impulse is markedly different. She says, “I find no shame, however, in acknowledging my egalitarian relationship with non-human material Being; everything emerges from the same matrix of possibilities.” (Stryker 4) She doesn’t see the appeal of the civilizing separation between Man as maker and creator on the one hand, and the rest of the world on the other, which is presumed to be infinitely passive, infinitely subject to use and attribution by others. Instead, she allows this schism to drive her back into solidarity with all that is unnatural.
For Stryker, revulsion toward transgender people stems from their inability or refusal to conform to the supposed natural order, distilled to its most-essential form in the rigid categories of man and woman. Although the transgender body is said to be monstrous because of its artificiality, Stryker says all that is called Nature and used as a cudgel against transgender people is actually just as artificial, just as constructed as the transgender body. She warns the reader against the falsity of Nature as a concept, “Do not trust it to protect you from what I represent, for it is a fabrication that cloaks the groundlessness of the privilege you seek to maintain for yourself at my expense.” Here, she asserts the general threat transgender people pose to the social order, which is to make-visible all of the horrible techniques by which each person is made into themselves. After all, she says, “You are as constructed as me; the same anarchic Womb has birthed us both.” (Stryker 4) The author is attempting to make good on the threats her experience is said to pose toward nature; in fact, this is exactly the way forward she suggests, “Heed my words, and you may well discover the seams and sutures in yourself.” (Stryker 4)
In spite of her close identification with the creature, Stryker specifies that their situations are not the same, noting that, “Unlike the monster, we often successfully cite the culture’s visual norms of gendered embodiment.” (Stryker 4) Transgender people cite these visual norms through the manipulation of subtle signifiers such as hair length, cut of clothing, use of makeup, wearing packers and binders, and medically altering the appearances of their bodies. This becomes subversive, she says, when transgender people, “...declare the unnaturalness of our claim to the subject positions we nevertheless occupy. (Stryker 4)
Stryker reminds us that after Frankenstein’s monster learns the details of its creation, “...rather than bless its creator, the monster curses him.” Frankenstein cannot control the monster’s mind. “It exceeds and refutes his purposes.” (Stryker 5) This is central to one of Stryker’s main uses of the Frankenstein analogy; if the Monster’s mind is not beholden to Frankenstein, the transgender consciousness is also not determined by the doctors who reshape flesh or the entrepreneurs who sell synthetic penises. Although medicine is capable of making a body seem natural to any observer, being the subject of such techniques might permanently alter the way one views nature or medicine in general, or as Stryker says, “engaging with those very techniques produces a subjective experience that belies the naturalistic effect biomedical technology can achieve.” (Stryker 5)
In Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein meets with his creation at last while hiking the glaciers above the village of Chamounix. The two go to a cabin together where the monster spends almost a quarter of the book telling Frankenstein its story from its own perspective to explain why it has turned against him. The essay itself enters Stryker’s analogy, “These are my words to Victor Frankenstein, above the village of Chamounix.” (Stryker 6) She goes on, later in the passage, “I, too, have discovered the journals of the men who made my body, and who have made the bodies of creatures like me since the 1930’s.” (Stryker 6) She is well aware that the scientists who developed sexual reassignment surgical and hormonal treatments did so for wildly different motivations than those that led her to engage in them. However, by nature of her desire to engage in them, she must submit herself to their categorizations, and of course at the time of her writing, to be transgender necessarily meant maintaining a proximity to diagnoses of mental illness. She comments on the effect of this, “Through the filter of this official pathologization, the sounds that come out of my mouth can be summarily dismissed as the confused ranting of a diseased mind.” (Stryker 6) This highlights the uneasy relationship between transgender people and the medical community at large. After all, the doctors who perform sexual reassignment surgeries and the like are not accused of insanity, as are the patients who submit to their care.
The essay shifts into a journal entry about the day the author’s partner gave birth. She describes a powerful and moving birthing process, awkwardly interrupted for her alone by a thoughtless designation by the baby’s biological father, upon seeing the baby’s genitals, “It’s a girl!” (Stryker 7) Returning home, she was filled with a well of pent-up emotions. She says, “To conclude the birth ritual I had participated in, I needed to move something in me as profound as a whole human life.” (Stryker 7)
She looks inward, and backward through time, reflecting on the relationship she had been in when she had her first child, before coming out as a woman. She remembers, “I had always wanted intimacy with women more than intimacy with men, and that wanting had always felt queer to me. She needed it to appear straight.” The author wanted to love women as a woman and her partner needed love from a man. Thus, refusing the gender she was assigned at birth, she refused the love that was predicated on it. In other instances related to the most recent birth, after she came out as a woman, people would ask if she were the baby’s father, of which she says, “It shows so dramatically how much they simply don’t get about what I’m doing with my body.” (Stryker 8) This interconnected web of rejections and losses is perhaps what leads her to conclude that “Nature exerts such a hegemonic oppression.” (Stryker 8)
The text continues in italics, in a more-poetic tone before breaking into poetry completely. The author was reeling from the day’s compressed emotions: the intensity of birthing, the dark cloud of the baby’s gendering, and the recollection of past relationships. She seems sad here, and angry, but also resolute, saying, “I can never be a woman like other women, but I could never be a man.” (Stryker 8) This hard realization drives her to reject that false choice. Instead, she says, “I do war with nature. I am alienated from Being.”
From here she moves on into the actual poetry. She references drowning and becoming water to escape, “If I cannot change my situation I will change myself.” (Stryker 8) This moment of recognition of her existence in an unlivable space and being forced to become something else carries through to the final lines of the poem, “In birthing my rage, / my rage has rebirthed me.” (Stryker) and into the final portion of the essay.
If the categories of gender are transmutable, then anyone with the power to “...cite the culture’s visual norms of gendered embodiment.” (4) also has the ability to reduce all the trappings of identity to a tactical level and explore new possibilities, or as Stryker puts it, “... by mobilizing gendered identities and rendering them provisional, open to strategic development and occupation, this rage enables the establishment of subjects in new modes, regulated by different codes of intelligibility.” (10)
Gender attribution robs individuals of this tactical posture toward gender and expression, pushing them into narrow corridors of expression instead. Babies are unable to choose this fate for themselves. This is critical because fotr Stryker, gendering a child is not a simple labeling, it is a prescription for a lifetime of behaviors that will have to be programmed into the child. She explains, “Gendering is the initial step in this transformation, inseparable from the process of forming an identity by means of which we’re fitted to a system of exchange in a heterosexual economy.” (Stryker 10) This fitting for a system of exchange, she says, is exactly what is meant by phrases like, “It’s a girl.” (Stryker 10) It is for exactly this reason that to be without gender, or even to perform gender incorrectly, would form the basis for social exclusion. If gender is meant to be a universal means of social coding, being able to express one clearly is a precondition to be understood. Stryker puts it this way, “A gendering violence is the founding condition of human subjectivity; having a gender is the tribal tattoo that makes one’s personhood cognizable.” (Stryker 10) Considering her own participation in gendering an infant, she speculates about the baby’s future, “I stood for a moment between the pain of two violations, the mark of gender, and the unlivability of its absence.” (Stryker 10) As violent and painful as her relationship to gender has been, she wonders whether it would be possible for the child to exist at all in our world without a gender, “Could I say which one was worse? Or could I only say which one I felt could best be survived.” (Stryker 10)
In bringing the piece to a close, Stryker continues to look toward the future and its possibilities for herself and other creatures like her. Even if gender presents itself as inescapable, that does not preclude the strategic approach to its expression she suggested earlier, “Though I cannot escape its power, I can move through its medium.” (Stryker 10) Perhaps, she suggests, by using the medium against itself, she can short-circuit the meanings that gendered signification are meant to communicate and even elaborate new and exciting ways to use the social coding of gender to express new ideas, “Though I may not hold the stylus myself, I can move beneath it for my own deep self-sustaining pleasures.” (Stryker 11)
In spite of this optimistic note about the potential to play with gender’s meaning, she holds that transgender people undermine this system’s integrity, because “To encounter the transsexual body, to apprehend a transgendered consciousness articulating itself, is to risk a revelation of the constructedness of the natural order.” (Stryker 11) She also reasserts that one cannot take part in this process without being transformed by it, “Be forewarned, however, that taking up this task will remake you in the process.” (Stryker 11)
The ultimate subversion is that the monstrous are resolute in articulating themselves in spite of the peril such expression spells for civilization. “Like that creature, I assert my worth as a monster in spite of the conditions my monstrosity requires me to face, and redefine a life worth living.” (Stryker 11) After all, Stryker didn’t ask to be born into this particular world. Like the monster, she asks, “Did I request thee, Maker, from my clay to mould me man? Did I solicit thee from darkness to promote me?” (qtd. in Stryker 11)
In the end Stryker parts with her reader with a sort of benediction, “May your rage inform your actions, and your actions transform you as you struggle to transform your world.” (Stryker 11) In the final words of the essay, then, she is returning to one of its central themes. One cannot engage with the world without being changed by it. Perhaps this is the process by which the world moulds monsters from each of us. It is only by investigating our seams and sutures for ourselves that we can learn the impact the world has had on us, or the impact we might have on it.

melon’s comprehensive kinlist!
including name of character, source, image, short personality description, mbti, and then why i kin them! take your time to read, or don’t. i get it if you don’t want to scroll through an entire page just to psychoanalyze me lmao, have a good time
1. wirt (over the garden wall)
Tumblr media
an angsty, socially awkward dweebus who nerds out over interior design and plays the clarinet. fears death. infp.
my first kin! for a month after rewatching otgw i desperately wanted to be him. to be like him. anything!! it eventually wore away but i still feel that urge sometimes - the urge to write r/im14andthisisdeep poetry and to distance one’s self from their siblings... and heck - his tape for sara is indeed just as awkward as he is but let me assure you that his poetry and clarinet are actually pretty cool. 9/10 i need to see him more. give me more otgw comics. ok thanks.
2. snufkin (moomins)
Tumblr media
a philosophical vagabond of vague age. acts stoic all the time but can and will leave every social situation whether or not it’s humanly possible. infp.
after watching some 90s moomin (and later on moominvalley) i realized how much i liked him and how much i was like him; i soon daydreamed of myself, as snufkin, venting to someone. it made me very happy. i vibe with his general demeanor and ideals (minus his gripes about rules, i follow those by the book) and i love psychoanalyzing him. so fun. so fun.
3. arnold perlstein (the magic school bus)
Tumblr media
overly-anxious jewish kid and certified expert on rocks and panicking. owns a pair of fire-proof pyjamas in a lovely shade of green. isfj.
you all saw this one coming. my early childhood lives in my mind rent free and such i can’t help but revisit arn and his character. i’ve always loved him (even in, and quite possibly especially in, the reboot) and i’ve always loved psychoanalyzing every single little thing he does (remember that one time he said he was traumatized? me too). i soon realized a lot of it was me projecting! so sue me. actually, sue miss frizzle. either one of them. i mean, if arnold really didn’t like the field trips he could’ve just filed a restraining order! ...just saying.
4. fluttershy (my little pony)
Tumblr media
anxious pastel butterfly baby child. probably loves animals more than she loves herself. cries upon impact. isfj.
the pony i’d mentally point to and think “me”. i had like 10 fluttershy-related things growing up, like plushies or funko pops or that sdcc guardians of harmony thing. while not shy in the same manner, it was nice having a character i could relate to about so much! i cosplayed as her equestria girls form for my first comic con as well, so that’s pretty cool. in addition, me being a little lepidopterist means i was bound to love her. it was destiny~
5. lammy lamb (um jammer lammy)
Tumblr media
socially anxious and generally anxious rock star who thinks literally everything is a guitar. has an emotional support girlfriend. infp.
man!! she embodies the feeling when you have to go to the eye doctor by yourself to get your glasses fixed or when you have to call someone over the phone... that sheer tension. the panic. the feeling of ‘i want to throw my entire being into the trash can’. but lammy has a bunch of friends to support her, so she’s cool. died by slipping on a banana peel! same, sister. and man would i like to shred on my ukulele now...
6. loser (bfb)
Tumblr media
humble (screw bfb 21), supportive, well-loved cube dude who’s voice is like that of an angel. has an entire fanclub in his honor. enfj.
okay, no, i was never a cool kid or ‘popular’, really, but in school i was never bullied for whatever reason and was generally well-liked; i hung out with a squad of weirdos and yet the cool kids would often talk to me? and try to engage me?? despite my very apparent self-deprecation and awkwardness??? either way i feel like it’s such a blessing to me, that i have so many friends! i often feel like i don’t deserve it, but hey. it’s nice! and heck, back when i was on scratch i had a little fanclub myself :0
7. fan (inanimate insanity)
Tumblr media
nerdy, friendly aspie boyo who subliminally vents via blogging. longs for stability in his life; was best friends with an egg. entp.
ever since i noted his aspergers-like behavior i became super attached to him - whether or not it was intentional, i found it nice having a character i can relate those feelings with. he’s really sweet and dorky and i love how he gets along with test tube, paintbrush, and lightbulb! it makes me really happy to see him whenever i do. it made me really sad when he was eliminated. what the heck. yeah i dunno i don’t kin him super strongly but i love him to bits.
8. spinel (steven universe the movie)
Tumblr media
emotionally unstable clown girl who stood in a garden for thousands of years. patience of a saint. edge like an 11-year-old me. esfp.
uhh um uh totally wasn’t completely disturbed by how much i related to spinel after watching steven universe the movie... totally wasn’t reminded about how and why i hated middle school... totally didn’t rethink my life that day... that’s it. this is all i’m saying.
9. molly blyndeff (epithet erased)
Tumblr media
innocent child who has a terrible father and a wonderful demeanor. teddy bear who needs a hug and a criminal as her new dad. infp.
epithet erased is adorable okay?? i knew molly was infp in the first few minutes... more precisely, i knew she was me. man!! i don’t relate directly to her angst but i still feel it. i can replicate her voice so accurately it’s scary. also, i coined a new thing -  ‘molly cake’! you have a chocolate cake, preferably with chocolate chips inside. use chocolate frosting and add little pastel star sprinkles! on top! my mom would make this cake for us anyway but then i realized it was literally just molly in cake form. and it’s just as sweet!
10. tommy coolatta (hlvrai)
Tumblr media
a 30-something-year-old child who rocks a propeller hat. chose his last name off of a dunkin donuts menu despite the fact that he has a father. infp.
everyone loves tommy. he’s so sweet? and funny and loveable?? often times when i say something funny but bizarre, i just remember that tommy has said ‘soda helps you see faster’ and it makes me happy. if i’m going to be a weirdo i want to be the wholesome weirdo who loves soda and has a .png for a dog! also i legally have to kin tommy. i took a test for it (and i’m not complaining! i find it quite flattering).
11. twyla (monster high)
Tumblr media
the daughter of the boogeyman; would very much like to boogey out of here, if you know what i mean. avoids people like the plague. infj.
seeing her role in the show and in the movies, i really love twyla? first of all, her voice is my new favorite thing. it’s like... gravelly? and soft? she’s the type of person who would very much like to disappear when in a crowd; thankfully, she literally can. i am drawn to any sarcastic, self-deprecating introvert who takes care of their bonkers extrovert friend (in this case howleen), as i often act as such myself. also the phrase ‘boogey sand’ will never leave my mind now :)
12. lapis lazuli (steven universe)
Tumblr media
water gem who wants you to leave. cynical as all heck, sensitive as all hell. is there such thing as a gem therapist? just asking. infp.
in a similar way to twyla, i vibe with lapis’ sarcasm and wit as well as her emotional side. it can be kind of addicting, isolating one’s self. anywho, me and my sister used to do this routine of yelling up to each other this certain dialogue between lapis and peridot when peri was leaving for something (in which lapis replied to everything she said with dry ‘yeah’s); i would always do lapis’ part. i do reply a lot with ‘okay’ or ‘yeah’ or ‘cool’ to things people tell me, as i never really know what to say.
13. brad meltzer (xavier riddle and the secret museum)
Tumblr media
shy jewish butterfly kid who absolutely hates time travel. attracted to people who know how to socialize like a normal human being. infp(?).
okay okay so... combine everything from arnold and everything from fluttershy and that’s basically what brad is to me. a jewish socially anxious nerd who loves butterflies and drawing. badabing badaboom, there i am. that’s it.
and boom! all of the kins i can think of, of course not including comfort characters like will byers from stranger things or isabelle from animal crossing. if you have any kins to suggest to me, i would love it! thank you for taking your time to read this, friend! have a fantastic day :)
