December 17 - 20, DY 26

Zilybar is sitting with his back to a tree looking up the mountain road towards the gate to Homlich House. He is polishing his cornetto. In the woods down the hill behind him, the rest of the party sits about idly in a makeshift camp. So focused on the gate, whence nothing has issued since the beginning of his watch just before dawn, the roguish gnome is taken off guard by a voice from behind him.

The voice is soft and feminine and says, “Is that a cornetto?”

Zilybar whirls around and finds himself looking at a young woman in her late teens or early twenties, dressed in luxury motley as if she stole garments from brothers or servants. A soft couch blanket is thrown over her shoulder, of a dark blue.

“Sorry to come up on you like this, but my friend - he’s really into theatre and there’s this trilogy he really loves. The Cornetto Trilogy, it’s called - the stories aren’t really all that connected, but the director - um,” she struggles to recall the name - “Nedgar Bright or something? He just works a cornetto into each play. But,” she says excitedly, “they never actually play it or anything! So I’ve never heard what the instrument sounds like! And I just, I just saw you sitting here with your cornetto and thought I’d ask - um, would you be willing to play me a tune?”

Zilybar never passes up an opportunity to perform for an eager audience, so he puts his lips to the horn and teases out a brilliant melody.

Unfortunately, his companions below think the blowing of a horn is a call to action, and rush up the hill with their weapons drawn.

Consequently, a bluff is required to stop the young woman from running away, and Zilybar elects to go with the theatre theme: the gang is a theatre troupe, rehearsing an avant-garde performance up here in the mountains away from the city so as not to disturb anyone.

The young woman buys into the tale. She introduces herself as Lavender Ellis Homlich, youngest daughter of the ancient patriarch of the family. Drawn into the liberality of her conversation partners, she accidentally reveals that she had snuck away from her home late at night to meet her paramour in Alfomb - an elf named Bread (“His parents don’t speak Common - they thought it was a beautiful, exotic name!”).

Well, well, well - ain’t this a convenient opening! The gang doesn’t pass it up.

“We’re looking for a place to perform our show, actually,” starts Nur. “We hear your family is throwing a party soon - perhaps we could feature?”

Zilybar adds that they wouldn’t ask for any compensation - so there would be no need for Lavender to tell her father about it. In fact, as long as Lavender provides them access into the party, she doesn’t need to be attached to the show at all, in case it is not received well. “But,” says Zilybar, “you strike me as a gal who appreciates art but rarely gets the chance to. We’d like to give you a chance to bring art home!”

Lavender is keen. She tells them about a secret entrance under a false boulder along the road that comes out into one of Homlich House’s many cellars - but then she has to get going, because her father or one or her father-aged brothers is going to barge into her room soon to wake her up for manners lessons or whatever shortly and they mustn’t find her absent!

The party watches her confirm the truth of the secret boulder entrance, then head down to Alfomb to prepare for their assault upon Homlich House on the day of the party, three days later.

Their preparations are not of particular quality, but they only consider their unpreparedness when they pass through the secret entrance and find themselves in one of the wine cellars of the Homlichs. A locker along one wall teases the provision of servants’ garb for disguises, but provides nothing, so the gang disperses through the party, already in full swing above them.

Zilybar acquires the outfit of a waiter from the kitchens after griping about the role of underbutler to a sous chef, who points the gnome to an extra costume hanging nearby - “More hands are always needed here!”

Arlex follows a tall master server to a marble bathroom, where the poor serviceman strips out of his outer garments before going insides-out in a stall, victim of too much undercooked shellfish.

Nur takes out a waiter in an alcove, scattering the selfsame hors d'oeuvres across the floor, and throws the person’s outfit over their own shepherd’s garb.

Roy, meanwhile, remains in the cellar and waits for his companions, using simple magic to alter his appearance.

Soon, they all convene again - and at this point realize that their unpreparedness extended from costume to the tools necessary to harvest the wood they have come for! So they begin looking around - and find a door that cannot fail to pique their interest. Made entirely of gold and with the bas relief of a skull upon its center, it doesn’t suggest saws or axes, but it certainly suggests something interesting! The party sets to work dismantling the chains draped across it and its many locks.

The final padlock falls to the floor, screaming like a banshee, but this does not deter our stalwart party. They open the door onto a stair, descending downwards into dim recesses. Nur slips upon a top stair and tumbles to the bottom, so is the first to see the horrible sight in the room beyond the stair.

A large basin near one wall contains an exsanguinated corpse. Desiccated lumber lies discarded along another wall. Alembics, beakers, and valves stand in a disorganized chaos upon tables and upon the floor, filled with various liquids, and each drips or steams into organic piping. All the tubes lead towards the center of the room, where, sitting upon a throne of yellowed bones, is a cadaverous man, his body almost disguised by needles and tubes.

As the rest of the gang arrives at the bottom of the stair, this man begins to laugh a horrible, rumbling laugh. He stands from the throne, and the needles fall from his body. For a moment, the wounds bleed a faintly glowing substance before his skin reforms, lush and young.

The party decides to look for woodworking equipment elsewhere.

As they spill out the top of the stairway, a cadre of guards are spilling down the stairway into the cellar, drawn by the screeching padlock, and a chase ensues through the Homlichs’ warren of cellars.

After going up, down, around, and back, our party has gained some distance on their pursuers and pause for breath among some impressively large barrels. 

“Hey,” says a drunk youth, wandering with her friends into the aisle, “Lavender told us to fetch the wine for the secret party. She’s, like, super pissed, because a theatre troupe or something was supposed to perform but they never showed up?”

Our quick-thinking adventurers immediately volunteer to help carry the wine to Lavender’s secret party, and soon arrive at a sub-cellar full of magical dancing lights and bumping music. For a time, they remain anonymous in the dimness, but Lavender, pissed in two senses, happens upon them as investigating guards enter the space looking for the four interlopers.

Zilybar decides that their explanation for Lavender can happen on the run, and the pursuit takes off again, this time into the conventional party happening upstairs. The explanation is something like as follows: the performance is already happening, and this is part of it. Lavender is not a fan of this performance and asks for another one, so when the gang throws off their pursuit once again, they put on a grand show for the young woman: a vanishing act.

They scarper out of the mansion and find themselves laying low outside of a large barn or shed. Peering in through the open door, Arlex spots a large open-bed cart piled up with months-aged timber in full logs. It’s clear to the gang that this is the very buoyant wood they have come here to pilfer, all packed up conveniently for them!

The gang enters the shed to come up with a plan and observes that the cart has been counterweighed to compensate for the antimass of the logs. Arlex tells her companions to step back and collects herself before uttering a word in Old Orcish and slamming her palm to the ground.

Fire erupts in a circle upon the ground, and from the scorched earth emerges a winged drake! 

“She can pull the cart,” explains Arlex. And sure enough, the powerful beast does not find it strenuous at all - it seems the counterweights have brought the cart back up to the weight of an empty cart!

The drake is harnessed in and the party heads out of the shed and towards the gate. They throw it open and head off down the mountain road; behind them, the skeleton crew upon the wall is racing back to Homlich House to collect a pursuit team.

The cart clatters down the road as quickly as the drake can pull it, but its lightweight proves a curse as it bounces up at every pebble. Only a few hundred yards from the gate, a bounce of particular height breaks the rim of one wheel, and suddenly the axebeak cavalry is upon the thieves!

The lances of the leaders prove dangerous weapons upon the charge, but our adventurers turn the tide after the initial rush, and soon Nur and Arlex have chopped to bits their opponents.

Shortly, Zilybar is the only one left with an adversary, but his situation has grown strange indeed! The story is this: His first move of the combat had been to tackle a halfling guard from his mount, which he did with impressive agility, sending the halfling to the ground and retaining a seat upon the axebeak. Then the halfling had adroitly returned the favour; only, he did it by putting a foot in a stirrup (to have the height) and lifting Zilybar from the saddle by the waist.

As if that wasn’t sexy enough, the pair set to wrassling! And as Zilybar went for a leg grab, he may have thrown a little tickle in there to confuse his opponent.

Soon enough, as has already been said, all the guards have been taken down, and everyone is watching Zilybar and his opponent roll about in the alpine grass. Zilybar pulls a particularly dominant reversal and ends up on top of the halfling, their faces almost touching.

“My name is Trevayne,” the halfling says breathlessly; “Trevayne Montmorency.”

Zilybar approves of the halfling’s Clark Gable mustache and determines that yes, the combat is over. He gives Trevayne a hand up.

Looking at the carnage nearer the cart, the halfling explains his apathy: “They were all pretty hypermasculine and made fun of me for knitting and living with my grandmother. It was just a job, and this - ” gesturing at the corpses - “is a hazard we’re all aware of when we sign up as guards in this violent world.”

“Wanna hop on my wood?” asks Zilybar, inviting Trevayne to join him on top of the cart of buoyant logs.

Trevayne is keen, and the gang +1 heads down the slope towards Alfomb and Principality Elvis.

There, they put out feelers and ask their refugee friends to do the same, looking for ship’s designers willing to design a vessel using a very unique material . . .

Sophie Ellis-Bextor shares her creative process

Where does the impulse to create something come from for you? What role do often-quoted sources of inspiration like dreams, other forms of art, personal relationships, politics etc play?

I can get ideas anywhere and everywhere. I think the impulse comes from an instinctive feeling that I need to express a pent up emotion. When I make new music, I feel better. Lighter. With my lastest albums my collaborator Ed Harcourt and I have been inspired by imaginary landscapes. Our 3rd record together, HANA, took us to Japan. Not literally Japan, but a dreamlike kaleidoscopic version. Fun!

For you to get started, do there need to be concrete ideas – or what some have called a 'visualisation' of the finished work? What does the balance between planning and chance look like for you?

Erm no ... I’m more a ‘go with your gut’ gal. It’s not super organised. I just start chipping away with ideas and themes and keep going until I feel like it’s done.

Is there a preparation phase for your process? Do you require your tools to be laid out in a particular way, for example, do you need to do 'research' or create 'early versions'?

No I’m pretty rough and ready. All I like is a studio, a co-writer as I writer better when I have someone I trust to bounce ideas off, and ideally that person can do all the tech side. Or we need someone who can. If I write alone it’s with an iPhone voice recorder and me singing into it! Possibly badly accompanying myself on piano.

Do you have certain rituals to get you into the right mindset for creating? What role do certain foods or stimulants like coffee, lighting, scents, exercise or reading poetry play?

Cup of tea please. I’m british. And something to eat at mealtimes. I can’t be hungry or I’ll get distracted.

What do you start with? How difficult is that first line of text, the first note?

When do the lyrics enter the picture? Where do they come from? Do lyrics need to grow together with the music or can they emerge from a place of their own?

Mostly the melody is first but occasionally it’s the other way round. The words need to fit the melody and usually once I have a tune, I get an idea of the topic and the attitude the song needs.

What makes lyrics good in your opinion? What are your own ambitions and challenges in this regard?

Good lyrics should lift off the page and feel like a real sentiment. You shouldn’t think about the writing process when you hear a song, just what it makes you feel.

Once you've started, how does the work gradually emerge?

I’m quite a quick writer once the mood is right. It should come naturally so if you’re spending ages trying to make it ‘click’ then I tend to think it’s not right.

Many writers have claimed that as soon as they enter into the process, certain aspects of the narrative are out of their hands. Do you like to keep strict control over the process or is there a sense of following things where they lead you?

If you’re writing with the right people it shouldn’t feel like that but definitely you can go down a rabbit hole with an idea and loose track of the initial good thought. I think that’s part of the magic though ... it should be a bit of luck to get it right or it would get boring.

Often, while writing, new ideas and alternative roads will open themselves up, pulling and pushing the creator in a different direction. Does this happen to you, too, and how do you deal with it? What do you do with these ideas?

That sounds like part of the fun to me. Creating something new is all in the moment and a little bit of problem solving. But ultimately if it makes you feel how you think you’re supposed to feel when you hear it back, you’re on the right track.

There are many descriptions of the creative state. How would you describe it for you personally? Is there an element of spirituality to what you do?

I suppose there’s a bit of ‘flow’. I work best when I’m walking or doing something else without the pressure of finishing a song or coming up with a new idea. Then it can just pop into my head! I love that.

Especially in the digital age, the writing and production process tends towards the infinite. What marks the end of the process? How do you finish a work?

Hard to explain, but I just know when it’s done. I think that’s actually a good thing as if you’re too much of a perfectionist you’ll never sign it off. You’ve got to know when to walk away.

Once a piece is finished, how important is it for you to let it lie and evaluate it later on? How much improvement and refinement do you personally allow until you're satisfied with a piece? What does this process look like in practise?

I don’t tend to over think it. I go with my gut. If it sounds good, it’s good. My husband is more meticulous so I love hearing his opinion and he’s been a brilliant support with getting things over the line.

What's your take on the role and importance of production, including mixing and mastering for you personally? How involved do you get in this?

I can mix and produce with my ears and instinct but I can’t tell you what the buttons do.

After finishing a piece or album and releasing something into the world, there can be a sense of emptiness. Can you relate to this – and how do you return to the state of creativity after experiencing it?

I don’t feel empty. I feel excited! It’s part of the process. I’ve never had the feeling of emptiness after release.

Creativity can reach many different corners of our lives. Do you personally feel as though writing a piece of music is inherently different from something like making a great cup of coffee? What do you express through music that you couldn't or wouldn't in more 'mundane' tasks?

Music is definitely more than coffee. It’s a chance to explain the human condition. To unite. To feel less alone. To articulate what it is to be alive. It’s the best. I do love a great cup of coffee too though.

The bright light shining through your window and the loud ass sound of alarm woke you up from a nightmare. Another day in this shitty life. You woke up with a frown on your face, wishing you died in your sleep peacefully. You sat up and reach for the cigarette that is peacefully waiting in the table beside your bed.

Life is a challenge, rather asshole for you. It's like everything is against you, You tried everything in your power to become stronger but the more you try, the more you realize your just weak.

Years have been past since your parents divorced, Your friends leaving you because their just not true friends, You broke up with your boyfriend knowing that he cheated on you. You hooked up with other guys and gals, and the one and only person who undertsands you died because of an accident.

"It really is hell"  you spoke quietly.

After reminscing and regretting memories, you finally went to shower, preparing for work.

"Your late again, ms. y/n" , your co-worker muttered. You mentally rolled your eyes, whispering a "sorry" before preparing yourself to face a shit ton of costumers.

Throughout the day, your manager came by and went to inspect how everyone is doing. And as he inspects you, you notice that his looking at you in an unreadable expression. You just shook your head.

Finally after pacing back and forth, faking a smile, lifting boxes, it's finally time to end your shift.

You wave goodbye to your co-workers when your manager went to call your name on his small office. "Hello there ms. y/n, we need to talk." The manager seem didn't look so happy when he sees you.

"Hi sir, what's up?" you reluctantly asked, as he invites you to sit across him. "Im very sorry to tell you that your fired." The manager avoids your gaze, scratching his beard. "But why-"

"I just notice your lack of participation ms. y/n, I notice you've been late around these days according to Leland"

"Excuse me?-"

"And you've been a little tired ms. y/n, im starting to worry this work affects your health badly."

"What? No! Im totally fine, I promise I will work harder, its my only hope."

The manager just ignores you and politely ask you to leave. You've begged and begged but the manager called the guard to let you out.

"My only hope...my only fucking hope.. what a joke." You sob, walking down the streets. You bowed down your head to hide your tears when you bump into a man.

"Woah, damn mommy. I didn't know you were that strong" The blonde guy laugh, you just gave him a short glance and started to walk away but you were suddenly grab on the wrist.

"Hey baby cakes, what's wrong?" the blonde guy grips your wrist tighter, "Im fine" You retorted. Trying to get away from his grip. He was strong.

"Excuse me, let go of me-"

The guy pulled you into a little more private area, pushing you against the wall and gripping your forearms inorder for you to not move. "Who are you?! Fuck. Help!" you whined, trying to get away from the guys embrace.

"its...okay..mhmm.. pretty girl.." the blonde guy spoke, smelling you. You tried pushing him away but he was too strong.

You were screaming for help but no one seem to heard you. His fingers are now playing with your hair, feeling his thigh between your legs.

You cried harder, whining and screaming.

"Lucas!! Get your ass over here! The fuck are you doing huh?" A woman about 40s came out of nowhere and yelled at the blonde guy.

"Fuck, mom." The blonde guy angrily ran away. "Motherfucker. Are you okay, young lady? did he do something?" the woman asked.

"Im okay" You sobbed and swiftly walk away from the woman.

You hurriedly went inside your apartment, crying harder than ever before. You notice there were papers under the door, asking for you to pay your bills or taxes and threatening you to leave if not to pay sooner.

The next few seconds were a blur, the shower turn on, you hear the water spilling.

You felt the cold water unto your body and a cold object on your hand.

You felt a slight pain in your wrist. Now realizing to what you are doing, you screamed and throw away the sharp object.

You cried. Cried that you lost your job, cried that a man assaulted you, cried that you couldn't even do it when you wanted it all the time, cried that you lost everything.

But something makes you keep going on...

You went to bed that night, tossing and turning. Regretting the things that happened today that you didn't even realize it was 2 in the morning but your still not sleeping.

In your right mind, you should forget about it and went to sleep but suddenly you found yourself riding on a train, traveling in the middle of the night. (Just clearing your mind tee hee :|| )

You felt numb, empty. All you could think was how your life is a hell, no light and no color. You just wanna give up and rest peacefully, you have nothing to lose.

"Hey, uh is this seat taken?" A certain red head suddenly spoke, interupting your flood of thoughts. As you look at her, you were lost again. Those green eyes made you feel alive, the small smile that she gave  you made you want to see more of it anytime.

You didn't know for how long you were staring until you heard a light laugh coming from the girl, its like a music to your ear.

"Uh,,, not at all" You awkwardly smile, She sat beside you and gave you a quick cute glance before playing with her fingers.

"So.. Im Ellie, what's your name?" the girl reluctantly asked.

"Ellie" A name that feels like home, safety.

She nods, giving you a shy smile before playing with her fingers again. She look so perfect. The way her green eyes would linger on you felt like it brought color to your life, the way her voice sounds is just so good.

You found yourself talking to the strange pretty girl for hours in the train, laughing at her stupidness, talking about how shitty life is, you felt like you trust her even though you just met each other.

The way she made you feel is indescribable, she made you feel something, something that makes you wanna go on and face all the challenges in this hell of a life.

She gave light to your life by just being with her and it made you feel so pathetic that you just met her but she had this effect on you.

"earth to y/n..?" Ellie laughed as she pat your shoulder lightly. You didn't know how long you were staring again, "Am I really that hot huh" You playfully slap Ellie's arm lightly.

After the train went to a quick stop at a station, it's finally the cue to say goodbye.

"So... this is my stop..." You spoke sadly, wondering why you dont want to let her go. Ellie went quiet for a second, "Uh hey- do you maybe wanna- hangout sometime?"

"Sure" You smiled.

You gave her your adress and number. After that you went home with a smile on your face, a smile that has never been shown before. A smile full of happiness and hope.

6 years later

"I pronounce you wives, you may kiss the bride" the priest happily announce.

Ellie grab your waist and kiss you passionately.

People cheered around you and the bright light shining through the both of you.

Ellie had proposed to you after 6 years of relationship, It was the years of your life full of love and joy.

She gave you a light to your life, a joy that no one has ever given to you. A love that will last eternally.

For once in your life, you finally found a light and you will never forget that night you both met.

jesus, i see that the Snyder Cut of Justice League is available now from HBO... I'll admit I just want someone else to tell me if it's worth reactivating my HBO for it. I wanted to watch the movie when it came out (esp all the cute guys and Gal Gadot!) but... i got cringey cold feet. And I'm the guy who said thanks to you for the Supes/ HoloDad convo that was worth more than the movie itself. so.... i think I'm looking for justification to paw over Henry Cavill again?

I watched it and I, just, ugh, I mean, kudos to anyone who can vibe with this four hour monstrosity, but good god.

It looks better now, color grading is better and pacing is better, which is to say, it’s more coherent. Which in turn is to say it’s mostly the same muted ominous palette with occasional bursts of Amazon armor or Cyborg’s glowing LEDs, and a snappy energetic pace of a Bela Tarr movie about farmers in the 19th century slowly starving to death.

Overall, it’s kinda maybe an improvement over the theatrical cut, but mostly it’s a lateral move. Like, if you’re not particularly into DC film universe, Zack Snyder, filmmaking snafus, or Hollywood behind the scenes drama, you probably won’t be super entertained by a four hour epic with a story on par with the first Suicide Squad. Or maybe you will be. What do I know.

Like, something is fundamentally fucked up with your movie if you need four hours to tell its pretty simple, formulaic story in a coherent way.

Things are wrong on a deeper level, be it misunderstanding of your own story, or misplaced ambitions, or the fact that this particular universe is simply not prepared to handle a team-up movie. Because see, if you have successfully established your characters in prior films, you can just do quick reintroductions for new people in the audience and move on to fun stuff (see: Avengers). And DC universe technically has prior films, but Justice League wastes like half of its runtime reestablishing who’s who, giving everyone full-fledged scenes, and those, while kinda all revolving around the same setup of a world without Superman, those don’t really connect all that well.

Also there are bits of backstory and such, and those are given the same weight as everything else, like, imagine watching The Fellowship of the Ring and not being able to tell if it’s a Frodo story or an Isildur story because they get the same runtime and attention. And everything has one monotonously foreboding pace and tone (again, imagine that Mordor and Shire hit the same). The death of Superman awakens the mother boxes (actual good scene! also ridiculously over the top! but in a good way!). The Icelandic women watch Jason Momoa take his shirt off and burst into a dirge. Men in funny hats talk in gravely tones to Connie Nielsen in a funny hat. It’s all grim.

It’s kinda wild, really, the individual parts, but it would be cool if those were a tad betted stitched together. You end up watching a bunch of long, ponderous scenes which kinda make sense on their own, and are kinda all parts of this story, but don’t flow into one another whatsoever. For two hours. It’s kinda this movie’s first act.

(There are also super-nitpicky moments like Ma Kent and Lois sandwiched between Batman failing to recruit Aquaman and a Wonder Woman action scene. Like, I can see Martha and Lois mourning bits happening earlier right after Clark’s death, and then things kicking up a notch, Batman going on a mission, moving from Aquaman to another future member of JL pretty smoothly. Instead we go to Iceland, then watch Martha and her U-Haul being sad, then have a little Nick Cave as a treat in a Lois scene, and only then cut to Diana. Why. What kinda emotional trajectory is this bullshit.) 

And without a clear story or drama momentum propelling the whole thing forward, well, it’s kind of a slog. And some scenes are just gratuitous and should have been cut entirely, like Barry Allen’s introduction featuring what I can only describe as a Lindsay Ellis reference.

Cyborg is more front and center this time, and while I actually liked him a lot in the theatrical cut, I kinda feel like expanding on his backstory does him a disservice maybe? Like, the backstory is textbook level superhero backstory 101. And it takes forever, like everything in this version. I dunno.

Everyone else is pretty much exactly where they were in the theater version. Steppenwolf gets a bit more motivation and backstory, but still is Steppenwolf. I’m not sure if he was the problem really. The team not feeling like a team coming together despite all odds was, and it still doesn’t feel like a team coming together despite all odds. We fixed the problem that wasn’t there, great.

Superman’s resurrection makes more sense now, because it looks like the theatrical version was not entirely reshot, but more like carved from whatever footage there was. So now the mother box on top of a cop car is justified better, Superman flying over his monument flows way more naturally, but what precedes it is the interminable scene of JL members arguing the logistics of resurrection, the Flash running, Cyborg doing sciency stuff, and it’s, like, I see why it’s there, but it shouldn’t be there. I see why it was cut, but also everything after it is tied directly into it, sooooo. It’s a mess.

And Superman’s freakout is still not the most sense-making thing in the world. And collateral damage is higher this time I think? Which, great, didn’t have enough of that. Lois is there again being a sexy lamp tenuously tethering Superman to humanity.

(Those de-mustached scenes in the theatrical cut with Superman shot on a phone and cops fighting parademons themselves after Clark’s demise? Those were good scenes. They provided much needed context of Superman’s relation to mankind. Here we’re back to Lois shouldering that whole thing alone.)

Then the gang goes to fight a bunch of ZBrush CGI stuff in Russia or whatever, the end.

Look, it’s still basically the same movie you saw in theaters. It’s improved visually, if you’re into that Snyder doing his best Nolan impression style of prior DC movies, and it has fewer leaps of logic which came from tightening the whole thing, and there are some extra new bits here and there, but overall it’s the same story. Only longer. So, so much longer.

And it has an epilogue now, and it’s the worst.

Cas was walking around the cabin with muted awe and you held back a smile as you watched him. The Airbnb had been a last-minute decision on your part, but you’d wanted to make his first Christmas as a human a special one. He’d never had any kind of holiday celebration as an angel, and when Sam and Dean had told you they didn’t have any plans, you knew that you it was up to you.

“Do you like it?” you asked.

He looked over at you from where he was inspecting the stockings hanging from the fireplace and smiled. “How did you find this place?” he asked. “Is it from the app you were getting Sam’s help with?”

“How did you—?”

“I used to be an angel, Y/N. I’m a human now, but I’ve learned how to tell when people are hiding things for me. I just don’t always pursue it,” Cas said.

You grinned and carried your bags over to the bedroom door. “Well, I’m glad you like it, even if it wasn’t as big a surprise as I was hoping.”

Looking around, you smiled a little at all the decorations. The owners had truly gone all out, just as they’d said, and you honestly couldn’t remember a time where you’d been in such a festive place for the holidays. The whole cabin was already decorated for Christmas, saving you from having to come up and do it yourself. Evergreen boughs were all over the place, as were candles and ribbons. A lush, full tree took up the majority of one corner in the cabin’s main room. The owners had decorated it just as beautifully as the rest of the cabin—it was draped with tinsel, sparkling ornaments, and glass balls that shone in the light coming in from the big, frost-covered windows along one of the walls. There were wreaths on every door too, inside and outside the cabin.

“Come on, Cas,” you said, making your way over to him. “There’s firewood outside and we’re gonna need to get some if we wanna keep the fire going all night. The stuff in here isn’t a whole lot.”

He nodded and followed you out the side door of the cabin, then down the balcony stairs to the yard. The snow was fresh and deep, and you let out a little squeak when you sank down and some of the snow slipped down in between your jeans and the tops of your boots. Cas was immediately at your side, lifting you out of the snow with ease and setting you on the bottom step.

“I can get the wood,” he said. “I don’t mind the snow, and you’ve worked hard to drive us when the roads were dangerous.”

Smiling softly, you nodded and watched Cas walk off towards the firewood hutch just before the treeline. He trekked through the snow with little difficulty, and after a moment, you turned and went back inside, leaving the door propped slightly open so that he could get in without a problem.

It wouldn’t be long before Cas returned, so you quickly hurried to the bedroom and took your bags inside. At the bottom of your larger bag laid his gift, and you listened to make sure he wasn’t back yet before reaching inside and pulling it out. You could put it under the tree in the main room and he probably wouldn’t notice it until you mentioned it on Christmas morning. The tree skirt was colorful and elaborate enough that it would probably just blend in. 

The sound of the door banging against the cabin wall, followed by Cas’ footsteps and the firewood tumbling into the metal holder beside the hearth, made your heart speed up. Quickly, you tucked away the gift and put your bag on top of the wooden chest at the end of the bed. Cas appeared in the doorway with a smile on his face a few moments later. His cheeks, nose, and ears were rosy from the cold, and you couldn’t help but smile back when you saw the excited glimmer in his eyes.

“There’s a trail by the firewood outside,” he said, and you chuckled.

“I didn’t think you liked to hike.” Turning back around, you began to unpack your clothes and put them in the dresser, making sure you picked up the gift as well when you pulled out a particularly bulky sweater. It would hide it well until you could sneak it out into the living room, assuming Cas didn’t go snooping.

“I’ve never really been hiking for fun,” Cas answered. “I’ve only been hiking on hunts, and the only thing I’ve noticed since becoming human is that it’s a lot easier as an angel.”

That made you laugh. “I’ll bet it is. I didn’t really bring great hiking clothes, but if it warms up a little we can probably go for a short hike.”

“I would like that a lot, Y/N. Do you want me to start a fire?”

Nodding, you pushed the last drawer closed and stashed your bag under the bed. “That would be great. I can make something to eat? Unless you’re not hungry…”

Cas was always hungry nowadays, and the eager nod he gave you made you smile. He left you to go start the fire, and after a moment you followed him out. On one side of the open living room was the kitchen, and you quickly got to work making dinner.

The casserole was almost done by the time Cas had started a fire and found a pine chest full of soft, warm blankets. His hand on the small of your back made you smile, and you looked up from the potatoes you were preparing to bake.

“Hey,” you said, smiling wider when he leaned in and pressed a kiss to your cheek. “What’s with the PDA?”

“PDA?” Cas asked. His eyebrows furrowed slightly and you chuckled, leaning towards him and returning the kiss.

“Public Displays of Affection. Kissing, touching my back, that kinda stuff.”

Cas glanced around the room. “I didn’t think we were in public.”

“Nevermind,” you chuckled, shaking your head slightly. “I was just commenting on how you were being more affectionate than you are when we’re in the bunker.”

“Oh. I wanted to thank you, Y/N. You’ve made this Christmas special for me already. I’ve never really celebrated before, but there’s no one I’d rather celebrate with you.”

You smiled up at him, glowing under his praise. “You sure know how to flatter a girl, Castiel. You wanna help me with the potatoes?”

He nodded, standing beside you at the corner after you shifted to make room for him. You showed him how to poke holes in the potatoes so that they wouldn’t explode, and then let him take the casserole out while you set two places at the table. 

“This is perfect,” Cas said as the two of you finally sat down with your food. 

“Yeah?”

“Yes. In all my years, I don’t think I’ve ever felt more… welcome and at home than I do right now. You help me to be content, and you make me feel safe, Y/N.”

Your cheeks warm, you reached across the table and took Cas’ hand, squeezing it gently. “You make me feel safe too, Cas. Now come on, if we’re gonna stargaze tonight, I wanna do it before it gets too cold. Let’s eat!”

Ellie May is a 2.5 year old Great Pyrenees who came to GRRAND from a shelter where she was surrendered when her family was divorcing and and moving. She is a beautiful and sweet girl who is now on the lookout for her forever family! This beauty is quite a gentle giant at about 90lbs (most is white fluff!) so be prepared for her to take up your whole couch! Here’s what Ellie May’s foster mom has to say about her: "So far Ellie May has been very easy. She’s on the skittish side, which I’m attributing to all the changes in her environment. I had 8 gals here for dinner tonight and she was shy but eventually accepting of attention. She eventually ended up under the dinner table while we finished eating. (after visiting everyone and getting some attention) She likes to be on my bed but I’m not letting her sleep with me as she seems content on the bed I’ve made for her on the floor by my bed…there is no doubt she’d be very happy to be there at nighttime if she were permitted. So far, she hasn’t been on any other furniture in the house. Ellie May goes outside when SHE wants to (typical GP breed), but it's not easy to get her to go when she’s not ready…Typical Great Pyrenees…on the stubborn side, but VERY sweet and gentle and she has not jumped up on anyone, but possibly because she’s shy about meeting people when they first come in. She’s definitely a counter surfer but only when you’re not looking...She is very gentle about taking treats and she doesn’t just gobble those down, so I guess she’s just not that interested in food as she has eaten very little, even with chicken broth on her food. As far as I can tell, she’s ambivalent about other dogs. I haven’t had a chance to walk her yet, but she pays little attention to the neighbor dogs on the other side of the fence. The Helps (2011)

The story starts with Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis) interviewed by someone and asked about What does it feels like to raise a white child where her baby raised by other people? She was silent. Aibileen starts to narrate her life looking after little Mae Mobley Leefolt (Emma and Eleanor Henry) from the Leefolt family. Elizabeth Leefolt (Ahna O'Reilly) as the mother of the child but, Aibileen thinks she is not ready to have a baby yet.

Then Aibileen starts to narrate the other character which is Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan (Emma Stone) as no man, no baby. Skeeter just graduated from the University of Mississippi and applying to Jackson Journal as a stepping stone to become a writer. She got the task to do a column about cleaning advice called Ms. Myrna column because apparently, she died overdose from hairspray.

Aibileen then narrates again about Mrs. Leefolt having a luncheon with her friends and introducing another character, her friend Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer) fellow maid for Mrs. Hillary "Hilly" Walters Holbrook's mother-in-law (Sissy Spacek). Hilly (Bryce Dallas Howard) is the leader of The Women's Socialite group and also president of the city's Junior League chapter. At the kitchen, Aibileen and Minny talk about their employee and Minny go to the living room to prep Mrs. Walter TV. Skeeter comes to the scene as also a friend of Hilly and Elizabeth.  They talk and Hilly is in need to pee but she holds it because Elizabeth's bathroom also being used by Aibileen. Then, Hilly purpose to the other ladies to build a separate bathroom for the helper or colored people. Skeeter is uncomfortable and tries to change the subject by asking Elizabeth's permission to lend Aibileen time for her Ms. Mryna column. Elizabeth asked why not go to Constantine, Skeeter said she quit. Along with the conversation, there is a phone call from Celia Ray Foote (Jessica Chastain) asking for Elizabeth but Elizabeth again but never get through her because Hilly hates her.

Skeeter goes back home and her mother, Charlotte Phelan (Allison Janney) tries to makeover her to be presentable for the family dinner. At the family dinner, Skeeter asks why Constantine quit which turns out she is fired and Skeeter having a flashback after leaving the dining room. In the morning, Skeeter called Elaine Stein (Mary Steenburgen) the editor in Harper & Row publisher about the story she wants to write. She wants to write about The helps point of view about raising white children who become their boss after they grow up. Skeeter tries to approach Aibileen first but got rejected and Skeeter can't have Aibileen helps anymore.

On the same day, the storm hits and Minny is in the house and wants to go pee but, Hilly insist Minny to go using the bathroom outside of the house. Minny lied and use the guest bathroom but Hilly knew and fired her while Aibileen is given a separate bathroom outside but, she is all sweaty inside due to there is no ventilation. Elizabeth talks about how Aibileen should be grateful for the separate bathroom. After Elizabeth has gone, Mae Mobley said the Aibileen is her real mother and Aibileen protecting Mae Mobley from the storm.

Minny is unemployed and returns to the Walters residence after bumping to Aibileen and Yula May Davis (Aunjanue Ellis) at the bus stop. Skeeter then approaches Aibileen again but, Aibileen refused her again. Skeeter then goes to the Missippi Council (I think) to acquire a copy of African-American rights and law. At night Aibileen got a phone call from Minny talking about how she lost her employment and her anxiety about what his husband going to do with her. In the morning after church, Aibileen finally decides to help Skeeter with her story, and the first scene of the story repeat.  

One day, Yula asks a loan to her new employer, Hilly but Hilly refused to give her and mock her decision while Minny prepares her daughter to be a maid also because her husband made her quit school to help pay the bills. Minny then goes to the only white that not gotten with the lie that Hilly made for her, Mrs. Celia Ray Foote. Celia is a very lovely and cheerful lady who bad at cooking. She is so happy that Minny accepts the position but, it was supposed to be behind her husband back. Hilly later held another society meeting for the charity ball progress while asking about the initiative she asks Skeeter to put on the newspaper she worked in.

After that day while Skeeter is writing with Aibileen, Minny shows up and mad about it but later comes around and tells Skeeter her side of the story. Later, Skeeter got a date with Hilly's husband's friend, Stuart Whitworth (Chris Lowell) that turns bad. Minny on the other hand teaches Celia how to cook and they have meals together. Later, Elaine asks Skeeter to give a dozen more interviews for the book with the help of Aibileen and Minny but none show up. Skeeter tries to approach Yula later on but got rejected and Hilly found them and forces Skeeter to write her initiative on the news. Skeeter did write about it but later give Hilly a prank by replacing old coat to old commodes which Elizabeth angry and spank Mae Mobley for misbehaving. Meanwhile, Skeeter watches the news about Martin Luther King's motion, Aibileen has to walk home because there's been a shooting. She walks to Minny's home and then Minny got so worried about Skeeter's story.

Nex day, while Minny was cleaning the house, Celia suffers a miscarriage and reveals to Minny about the other two and buried the miscarriage fetus in the garden. While Yula got arrested for pawning Hilly's ring that she found while cleaning. After this incident and Medgar Evers's assassination many of the help willing to share their story with Skeeter. Hilly makes another gathering in Elizabeth's house which Celia comes uninvited and brought Minny chocolate pie but later laughing at by the other ladies. Celia wonders what makes Hilly hates her so much and Minny reveals it that Hilly and Celia husband, Jonathan "Johnny" Foote (Mike Vogel) used to date and when they broke up Johnny married Celia due to, she is pregnant. Celia reveals that she has a relationship with Johnny after the break up not before. Celia also treats Minny's wound says that she should leave her husband.

Following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Skeeter, Aibileen, and Minny fear the maids' stories will be recognized. Minny reveals the "terrible awful" she did to Hilly. Minny brought Hilly her famous chocolate pie but revealed that she baked her own excrement into the pie after Hilly had finished two slices. The inclusion of this incident in the book would prompt Hilly to crusade in denial that the book is about Jackson. On the night of the charity ball, Celia shows up and tries to make amends with the ladies and Hilly. She tries to make sure Hilly won Minny's Chocolate Pie but it only makes Hilly angrier and dismisses Celia.  The next morning, Celia is going to go back to Sugar Ditch and leave Johnny but Minny stops her and tells her the whole truth. Meanwhile, Skeeter confronts her mother about firing Constantine, and Charlotte reveals that during a Daughter of America luncheon, Constantine's daughter Rachel disobeyed Charlotte's orders to enter through the kitchen, embarrassing her. To save face, Charlotte fired Constantine; Rachel took Constantine to Chicago, where she later died.

The book is published anonymously and is a success. Even Mrs. Walters read and tells Hilly about it. Celia who finally sees what a manipulative bully Hilly is, and writes a check to one of Hilly's charity groups, made out to "Two Slice Hilly". Incensed, Hilly threatens Skeeter with legal proceedings, but she reminds Hilly that she would have to admit the pie story was about her in chapter 12. Charlotte intervenes, letting on that she knows about the "terrible awful", and orders Hilly off the property. Charlotte and Skeeter reconcile when Charlotte tells her how proud she is of her courage, the book, and her job offer in New York City.

After Minny does some grocery shopping, Minny got scared because a man follows her who later reveals as Johnny. Johnny then tells her that he knows everything and Celia told him also how Minny being around helped Celia to cope with life after losing their babies. Johnny then takes Minny to the house and turns out Celia has been cooking everything that Minny taught her and give her a permanent job. Later Minny got the courage to take her children and leave her husband and Aibileen got a little surprise from their church and give the book that full of 2 church society of the colored people to Skeeter and encourage her to take the job at New York and leave them to take care themselves. Apparently Hilly has a plan to get her revenge by framing Aibileen for stealing silver cutlery and she stood up to Hilly and bit her goodbye to Mae Mobley, ask Elizabeth to gives Mae Mobley a chance, and did her last narration that she find closer and looking forward to her future as a writer.

 Huh, the story really did get me or my emotion into a twist. The actor and actress are so good at what they do because I cried seeing Aibileen and Mae Mobley scene every time and what mother who needs to be asked to give her children a chance to feel her love. No mother should be told to do that. I also so pissed at Hilly but man Bryce really nailed the antagonist character. I also like Chris and Mike they really got the look and do act well based on their character. Emma Stone also did great at portraying Skeeter, she is really Emma stone style, I think. My favorite would be every scene of Minny and Celia. Jessica Chastain really gives me the vibes of Celia the young gal that married her husband for love. The story is not failing me at all, it was wrapped nicely and I feel like I intrigued every scene. For me, this movie really enters my movie list to watch over and over again especially a part where Minny play by Octavia Spencer told Hilly that she just eats her shit. It really makes me wonder if Minny always bakes her pie that way?

In addition, a silk pillow case is a great thing for hair that has been processed.

It is not for the everyday ponytail type of gal as this can break these delicate silver hairs. I also let customers know that silver / white really shows lack of pigment in the skin tone, so if they are not makeup wearers, they will feel washed out without a bit of lipstick.

It is not for the everyday ponytail type of gal as this can break these delicate silver hairs. I also let customers know that silver / white really shows lack of pigment in the skin tone, so if they are not makeup wearers, they will feel washed out without a bit of lipstick.

Light metallic purple

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this type of platinum as silver purple. It is icy platinum that is almost iridescent in color. When it moves and in different lighting, you see pops of purple, silver, white and almost a shade of blue.

Because we made her platinum so modern, I wanted to add some vintage waves to make up for it. These were made with my Isa Professional flat iron. I took four 2.5 ″ horizontal sections around my head and created half-on-base curls with vertical 1.5 ″ partitions. Each lock was curled in the same direction and fixed on the head until it cooled. After that I brushed the hair and the finger waved the style until it formed. I styled it with Mydentity Mycontrol Spray and TIGI Afterparty.

The haircut was soft long layers.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This light purple hair dye was considered a pastel shade. Whenever we are dealing with soft pastel shades such as silver, blush, lilac, baby blue or even mint, to name just a few, we speak of a semi-permanent tone. This means that depending on the care, it can take just a few washings to a few weeks. Wash with cold water, only 1-2 times a week, and help with styling to extend the shade with zero to very low heat. If a customer wants to keep a color like this, they have to be willing to visit the salon once or twice a month with home care in between. The stylist can make a special tinted Olaplex # 3 (no matter what color the customer's hair is) or a tinted shampoo brand, like Viral, as take-home color care.

This is not a cheap hair color to achieve. The lighter the hair, the easier it will be to lift. Anything darker than a dark blonde can either expect a very long day in the salon or multiple visits to even reach that level of the blonde and not affect the cuticles of the hair. Talking to your stylist beforehand and running a strand test can help both the customer and the stylist determine if the look is even possible for the customer.

This particular customer was initially a natural blonde, so we were able to achieve this look safely in one day.

Vintage waves are a great option! Always classy and timeless. For an easier way to reach these waves, curling iron or a magic wand can be used at home to achieve a portable version. As long as all the curls around your head are pointing in the same direction, waves will appear. The closer the curl is to the scalp, the narrower the wave. Curl away from your head for a soft, subtle wave.

Note: the more layers and the shorter the hair, the more difficult it will be to achieve the uniform vintage wave look. However, if you do, go for it! You get a look with tons of body and a textured wave look.

A hint of purple in this platinum blonde seems to do the trick to make a beautiful shade of light purple.

hope sterling, growing pains (dc au) - she’s anger but also she has such a hero complex? her arc is mainly her learning how to manage her shit mental health but also learning that she can’t sacrifice herself. she thinks she’s independent and she just has to learn how she’s coping isn’t....healthy??? idk originally she was just anger but it was never justified and i felt with her that if i didn’t explain it she would seem really one dimensional so i added in stuff to make her more human i guess.

liv tobin, ultraviolet (mcu but no specific character) - she’s the feeling that you can just run away from all of your problems? she’s not selfish, but she’s that self-preserving part of me that most characters of mine tend to avoid? idk she’s not the typical hero. she doesn’t have a death that happens that makes her want to become a superhero, she just gets superpowers and says “hey! let’s be a good person and use these for good!” she definitely wants glory too, and she’s not selfish for that i don’t think. i think she’s smarter because of that. she just wants to be recognized as a good person.

reese bassett, [working title] (into the spiderverse) - she’s not really a feeling. to me she’s just the girl that everyone wants to be. she’s not a manic pixie dream girl either, she’s just cool. she’s got this aura to her and miles and gwen instantly recognise that. it’s kinda chill actually. she’s in a sense just a cool gal. she’s who i thought i would turn out to be???

venus picard, [working title] (it (2017+2019)) - the feeling of being “the new girl.” she moved from across the country to DERRY, MAINE of all places. i moved from right outside of houston, texas to a small town in maine so she’s really out here being a self-insert. also i wanted to write an it fic that actually made sense like.....maine-wise. everyone’s fics either make it seem like canada/alaska or they make it less small-towny. also castle rock was based off of my town and stephen king went to the high school i almost went to so i feel like it’s my right to tbh. 

america hugo, catharsis (stranger things) - depression. she’s HARDCORE what my depression feels like on the inside turned into a person. america is similarly if i succumbed fully to my depression & anxiety and didn’t have an outlet. this fic is really just cathartic, hense the name of the story. she doesn’t have the light at the end of the tunnel like i did when my depression was off the chain awful. however, she doesn’t get together with steve (she’s ace......and she has to love herself in order to properly love others so no romance for her!!!!!!!) and she doesn’t have it fixed overnight.

eleanor cate, leia, oh leia (steve harrington) - ellie, (or leia...yes steve calls her that yes i know) is the feeling of pure happiness. she’s got a good fam, she’s got a boyfriend (who is a shitbag but don’t worry steve swoops her in from billy.....) and she’s happy. she’s the euphoric feeling i get when i truly love someone (romantically or platonically) and she’s just a pile of mushy gushy love tbh. ellie is babie in all forms. but the mind flayer and hawkins in general kinda ruins that for her. whoops. also she’s just so cute ugh i love her!!!!!!! also she’s the soft oc. all of the other “soft ocs” have trauma or they have a bad coping mechanism so in reality they’re only soft in their head. 

(PSA: phoebe is “soft” but she takes out her deep-rooted feelings on peter, vera goes through some deeply TRAUMATIC shit, and hope is soft deep down but doesn’t know how to express it. whoops.)

As I loaded up and headed east towards Okemah, and day two of the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival, I couldn’t help but speculate. Could it top the previous day? I mean after all, Thursday’s performances had been exemplary, and I mean each and every single one. How rare is that? I mean, usually in a festival setting you’re bound to get a clunker; a less than enjoyable set for whatever reason. That simply hadn’t happened, and I almost felt like I was struggling with this fact. I decided to chalk it up to a euphoric reaction. The simple presence of music, as well as the welcoming and engaging atmosphere had most certainly played tricks on me somehow. Surely today would expose a shortcoming or a weakness. I readied myself somewhat unconvincingly.

After all,  Friday’s lineup was packed with artists that I really, really like, several of whom I’ve seen before, or even reviewed albums or live shows for here on Americana Highways: REVIEW: Tim Easton’s “Exposition” is Vibrant Personal Testimony with Indefinable texture. Additionally, there were several artists that I had been really wanting to see, but for one reason or another hadn’t managed to up to this point. Certainly there would would be a disappointment or two today. As I pulled into downtown Okemah just before 1pm, I immediately noticed an increase in pedestrian traffic. Already, things were well under way, and I immediately regretted not arriving sooner.

Having meticulously studied the festival schedule, I had ensured my arrival would be more than adequate to ensure I didn’t miss Tim Easton’s 2pm set at the Crystal. This proved to be one of the best decisions I made the whole weekend, as it lead to one of my favorite musical discoveries in quite some time. As I made my way into the Crystal, Radoslav Lorković  was just starting his set. Over the course of the next 45 minutes or so, Rad (as I came to learn he is affectionately called), along with his accordion and piano performed his unique blend of classical, jazz, country, blues and folk, all accentuated by his Croatian heritage. Throughout the remainder of the festival, Lorković would be in high demand, and would guest on set after set.

Still somewhat mesmerized by Lorković’s set, I settled in for Tim Easton’s.  I had recently been given a download of Tim’s new album “Exposition” to review for Americana Highways here: REVIEW: Tim Easton’s “Exposition” is Vibrant Personal Testimony with Indefinable texture and was really excited to see those songs performed live. No disappointment here either. The songs live were even more vibrant and warmly presented than the recorded versions. The context that a song on the album had actually been recorded next door in the Okfuskee County Historical Center really brought things full circle. Already, my day was two for two. Next, as Annie Guthrie began preparing for her set, none other than proud papa Arlo Guthrie walked in from backstage and took a seat next to me at the front of the theatre for his daughter’s performance. It was perhaps the most surreal moment I’ve experienced over the course of several decades worth of concerts. I simply uttered a “Hi Arlo” as he settled in and gave me a friendly return hello and nod. Annie’s set was lighthearted and fun and already day two was looking as memorable as the first.

Next came my first true dilemma of the festival. Two artists I was really excited about seeing would be taking the stage at the same time in different venues. First, I headed over to the closer Bound For Glory tent to catch Nellie Clay. Nellie is an Oklahoma native, that has compiled an impressive catalog of songs as a “ramblin’ gal”. She and her guitar case have traveled some miles, and her songs made her one of my must-see sets. Nellie, who now lives in Okemah, seemed to be everywhere at once. If she actually wasn’t, she should have been an official fest ambassador.  I saw and spoke with her at various  venues and backstage areas as she showed support for countless artists. Nellie’s good people. Unfortunately, I was only able to take in about half her set, as I also really wanted to see fellow Oklahoman Ken Pomeroy a few blocks west at the Hen House. Despite her young age, Ken is quite an accomplished songwriter and performer and I was happy to finally catch one of her sets. Pomeroy won the first annual Jimmy LaFave Songwriting Contest, and for good reason, her songs are good. Here at the Hen House, she was joined by her band that featured Kyle Reid on guitar, her dad Skip on percussion and Johnny Carlton on bass. As much as I hated leaving Nellie’s set early, I was really glad to catch some of Ken’s songs as well. Pomroy’s set became one of my favorites of the whole fest.

Next, it was back over to the Bound For Glory Tent to catch yet another new favorite, Jared Tyler and band. I had already seen Tyler playing with Monica Taylor on day one, but I absolutely wasn’t prepared that he would also become one of my top three new discoveries of the festival. All three, discovered on the same day no less (Lorković , Pomroy and now Tyler). Joined by Seth lee Jones on guitar Tyler’s set was inspiring and the perfect warm up for one of my local favorites, Carter Sampson. Joined by her band, Luke Mullenix on bass, Kyle Reid on pedal steel, Jack Waters on Drums and Mike Satawake on guitar they tore through her latest album, “Lucky” with a “Queen of Oklahoma” encore. Easily another highlight.

Following Sampson’s set I headed over to a local restaurant for a quick bite before heading over to the Pastures of Plenty main stage for the headline performances. As I ate, I watched artists and coalition volunteers sharing meals and conversation as I processed the day so far. Seven performances on the day so far, and every one outstanding. Hard to believe, but 100% true. I made my way over to the main stage and caught the tale end of the “Songs of Audrey Auld” tribute featuring Nina Gerber, Pam Delgado and Jeri Jones. Auld, an Australian singer songwriter and festival mainstay passed away in 2015. These three ladies played a moving, yet fun set of her songs that culminated in the spreading of a few of Auld’s ashes on the Pastures of Plenty grounds. A really special moment for sure.

Next was one of my most anticipated sets of the weekend with John Paul White’s festival debut. Speaking with John before he took the stage, he joked with me wondering if any in the crowd even knew “who the hell he was”. If they didn’t they certainly did by the time he wrapped up a hypnotic and beautiful solo set. As I moved about photographing throughout his performance, over and over fans and other artists couldn’t stop commenting how wonderful White’s performance was. If White was truly concerned, he surely overcame those concerns with a wealth of new fans. His special rendition of Guthrie’s “Pastures of Plenty” proved to be yet another magical festival moment for me. Closing out Friday night’s performance’s were the one-two punch of Joel Rafael followed by Ellis Paul. Both men are Woody Fest Coalition Advisory Board members, staples of the festival, and add an immeasurable degree of sincerity with their songs. It was my first time seeing each songwriter live, but I certainly hope it won’t be the last. In particular, Raphael’s “Glory Bound” was truly wonderful, while Paul’s moving “God’s Promise” (joined by Terry Ware and Radoslav Lorković) certainly captured my attention.

So here at the close of day two, I pull onto westbound I-40 still somewhat in disbelief of all I’ve taken in so far. Tomorrow’s another day, and I can hardly wait. Day three’s schedule is another super one on paper and at this point I have no doubts that it won’t live up to its promise.

A fashionable health and fitness group came less than hearth Friday for Instagram posts from a fitness retreat that social media end users explained appeared to use regional tribespeople as “props.”

Russell’s Skinny B—- Collective, which costs alone as the “most special physical fitness course on the planet,” held the retreat in Kenya for roughly 10 women who were captured in the films.

In an apology posted on the internet Saturday afternoon, the conditioning group claimed it understood the photographs from the journey experienced bolstered “colonial-period depictions of persons of colour.”

A trendy health team arrived beneath fire on social media Friday for a series of movie posts from its retreat in Kenya that depicted area tribesmen as what one account described as “props.”

Russell’s Skinny B—- Collective, which serves celeb clientele such as Suki Waterhouse and Ellie Goulding, and charges itself as the “most exceptional health class on the world,” was called out over posts from a exercise retreat in Kenya that featured Maasai tribesmen standing nearby or in in between women who were being working out.

The tale 1st caught flame when @eating plan_prada, an Instagram account devoted to trend sector commentary, re-posted the health account’s films of the retreat, which it reported featured “a gang of seemingly cloned, pony-tailed white gals.”

“Ummm…happy Worldwide Women’s Working day?” the account wrote.

“Among the sisterhood-fostering things to do like sizzling air balloon rides, chef-prepared organic foods (that chia berry jam!), and dancing ’round a tree of life, they also managed to use the regional Maasai individuals not only as a backdrop, but as literal props in their conditioning routines,” the account wrote.

A comment on the submit from Instagram user @tracy_njeri hit back at the videos, which she claimed “ridiculed” the tribesmen as they had been “relegated to perform in the background.”

“As an African girl I am drained of seeing my people today relegated to enjoy in the background,” the consumer wrote. “As a Kenyan female it enrages me to see my people remaining made use of as PROPS, staying ridiculed in his posts, being employed to be their own “cheerleaders” asking them to conduct their common jump/dance to increase to the “atmosphere” of their exercise routines.”

An apology posted to the health and fitness collective’s Instagram account Saturday afternoon mentioned the retreat was meant to encourage “cross-cultural exchange,” but the group understood it had reinforced “colonial-period depictions of persons of colour.”

“It has been rightly pointed out that significantly from advertising a optimistic conference of opposing cultures, we might have in its place unintentionally performed into a racial record of ‘othering,’” the apology additional.

It looks like there is another wedding in Meghan Markle‘s future as her close friend Misha Nonoo is planning her walk down the aisle.

The Bahran-born designer, who claims that she set-up Markle with her now-husband Prince Harry, is engaged to millionaire entrepreneur and oil heir Michael ‘Mikey’ Hess. 

In a photo posted on social media, Hess, 32, can be seen down on one knee proposing to his future bride, 34, on a boat during what appeared to be a romantic getaway to Cabo San Lucas for Valentine’s Day.

‘Thank you for making all my dreams come true, Misha Nonoo,’ wrote Hess in the caption. 

‘I am so in love with you, and I feel so lucky I get to spend the rest of my life with you right beside me.’ 

DailyMail.com has also obtained the first photo of Nonoo’s sizable diamond ring, seen on the designer on Tuesday morning in New York.

We do love looking back at the Duchess of Sussex’s old outfits. Or Meghan Markle as she was when she attended the 2015 CFDA Awards! Who knew then that in just a few short years, the Suits star would be married to Prince Harry?

This will be the first marriage for Hess and the second for Nonoo, who was previously wed to Paddle8 founder Alexander Gilkes.

Nonoo was just 17 when she started dating the 24-year-old Gilkes,and two eventually married in 2012.

That union only lasted a few years however, and in 2017 the pair finalized their divorce, with Gilkes now dating Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova.

Nonoo is the daughter of an Iraqi businessman and English mother, and at the age of 11 moved to London with her family.

She is also Jewish, as is Hess, whose grandfather Leon founded the multi-billion-dollar Hess Corporation.

Hess’ father John is now the CEO of the company.

It dos not seem that Hess will be joining the family business any time soon though, having worked at Goldman Sachs and the Royal Hashemite Court after graduating from Harvard and Harvard Business School, where he met best friend Josh Kushner.

He is currently an associate at KKR & Co.

Nonoo and Hess first made their relationship public at the royal wedding last year, and a few months later joined Kushner and his then-fiance Karlie Kloss for a trip down the Amalfi Coast on David Geffen’s yacht. 

The couple were back on a boat when Hess popped the question, though their location is unclear. 

There was a brief stop before the couple made their way back to New York, with the pair paying a visit to Hess’ family in Beverly Hills.

Then it was back to New York, where Nonoo was seen arriving back to the city on Tuesday morning after taking a red-eye flight. 

She popped into her apartment for just a few hours however before heading back to go do some work at her New York studio.

Nonoo will have another reason to celebrate this week as well, with her good friend Markle having returned to the States for the first time since her wedding to have her baby shower in New York. 

DailyMail.com obtained the first images  of Markle stateside on Monday, as she snuck into a waiting car with her bodyguard

Markle did her best to try and conceal her identity by wearing a newsboy cap and carrying a jacket to conceal her baby bump.

She will be feted on Tuesday with a baby shower at the very posh Mark Hotel on Manhattan’s Upper East.

Markle headed there on Monday night after spending the day at Nonoo’s duplex in Greenwich Village. 

Vans full of flowers were seen entering the hotel on Tuesday morning along with a crib.

Photographers had lined the entrance to The Mark by noon, which for years has served as base camp for the A-list crowd of stars, supermodels and fashionistas attending the Met Ball. 

Among those spotted arriving on Tuesday was Markle’s Suits costar Abigail Spencer.
