An Extraordinary New Acquisition!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We are delighted to announce an important recent acquisition made possible by the generosity of Katharine J. Kilgour: a manuscript containing the texts of a Book of Hours and a Psalter. Written in Latin and French, it was exquisitely illuminated by one of the leading miniaturists working in Paris in the first two decades of the sixteenth century: Jean Coene IV.  Read more!

Direct from the Director Summer 2023
What a fantastic year of exhibitions and programs it has been - thank you all for being a part of it! I am delighted to share with you a brief recap of our successes - we presented six exhibitions, together with 74 in-person and virtual programs! We had over 8000 in person visitors, and over 60,000 digital engagements with our virtual tours, lectures and other programs. One reason this number is so high is that almost 30,000 people have watched the beautiful video tour we created for the Norma Minkowitz exhibition this past winter. Did you see it? If not, you should check it out.

I have just returned from the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries annual conference and am full of ideas for how to make our museum even stronger! It is always so inspiring to hear what our colleagues in the field of academic art museum are doing at their institutions all over the country. Michelle DiMarzo and I were both able to present some of the innovative and exciting work that we are doing at our museum as well. Michelle lead a round table discussion about student-curated exhibitions, sharing the two that we presented to you this past year, and the one we have coming up in fall 2024 (focusing on Old Master prints). I lead a group discussion about virtual programming, and shared our commitment to continuing to providing this service to our communities, where I was able to boast about our remarkable virtual engagement numbers!

This summer at the Museum we are all very busy getting ready for our major fall exhibition, In Real Times: Arthur Szyk: Artist and Soldier for Human Rights. Please take a look at our Eventbrite site, and register for the events that interest you, because some of them may sell out. We have people joining us from all over the country to attend this exhibition, the symposium, and some of the other programs. As always, we will livestream and record as much as we can, but events like gallery tours are limited to small groups and are in person only. We are the exclusive venue for this exhibition in the northeast, and are very excited to be able to share Szyk's remarkable and important artwork with our community. We look forward to welcoming you to the exhibition opening on September 28th, please sign up now for Philip Eliasoph's opening night lecture and for the opening reception.

We continue to work hard to build our collection through donations, and I would like to share the wonderful news of a recent gift to the Museum by a generous Fairfield alum. Patrick J. Waide, class of '59, had previously lent a collection of works from his collection, by artist Andrew Forge, to an exhibition that the museum presented in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries in fall 2020. Very few of you had the opportunity to see this beautiful and important exhibition because the campus was closed to outside visitors, due to Covid-19, during this time. Happily, these works have all now been gifted to the Museum, to be part of our permanent collection. We look forward to sharing them with you again in the galleries someday soon, but in the meantime please visit the exhibition webpage linked above.

Wishing you all an art-filled, relaxing, and restorative summer. Looking forward to seeing you in September! Carey

hi hellen! i'm a high schooler thinking of pursuing law - i know it's tough to get into, but i'd like to give it a shot. how did you know that it was right for you, and what would you consider to be the most important things to do to prepare to study it in advance? any additional advice would be great, thanks!
Well, the thing you often hear about "oh, you're so good at arguing, you should be a lawyer" is mostly bull. The actual main skills for a lawyer are research, writing, analysis/application, negotiation, debate (not arguing) and emotional regulation. If that sounds appealing, it may be a good fit!
I pretty much always tell people that you should do your bachelor's in something other than prelaw. In fact, it should be in whatever field you would want to have a career in if you weren't a lawyer. Law schools generally do not require specific undergrad majors, as I, with my double art degree can attest. Law school is geared to give you all the basic tools necessary for being a lawyer. I did not notice any meaningful advantage a prelaw major provided to my peers. If you have a particular law school in mind, look into their admissions criteria, but otherwise--get your bachelor's in your backup career.
Work on your reading and writing, and go to court. Courts are open to the public and these days most of them actually have facebook and twitter pages where they post dockets; many courts post-pandemic actually also livestream all proceedings, sometimes right on youtube. Look at what's going on in some of your local courts, and just go watch it happen. You are welcome to sit and watch court proceedings, just don't be disruptive and be prepared to go through a security check. Get a sense for what goes on!

AU where Danny is a stressed college student student aerospace engineering and is caught up in a fear gas attack, but since he's half ghost his biology is slightly fucked up when it comes to drugs and chemicals so it does the exact opposite and he's now as high as a kite while everyone is screaming in fear.
Meanwhile Scarecrow is curious about the young man who started giggling when he inhaled the fear gas and slips a little note into the man's pocket before dipping and the bats show up.
Cue Danny ending as the- actually paid- tester for Dr. Crane's new and other improved gasses which are actually good for him and awful for others. Like one guy is sent into hysterics as everything just hits him all at once, the air being audible, that one flickering light being ear shattering. Meanwhile Danny has just pulled out his notebook for his aerospace engineering class and started writing down new ideas with this sudden hyperfocus that seems chill to him.
This eventually leads to the bats finding out while Danny's just being given vapes filled with that overwhelming gas so that he can actually focus on his exam studying without getting distracted.
(Scarecrow is probably in the giddy stage of a new test subject that has positive feedback for his work. Mans had a contract written up and prescriptions made for Danny to use the gasses legally for himself.)

[AU Masterpost]
Little late this year, but joining the festivities: Ides of March is an awkward day to be SHSL supreme leader probably.
I am 95% certain its canon maki pulls on her hair as a nervous tick and we should draw it more. Also, don't worry about the parallels to Kokichi taking one for the team to keep blame off Maki for something again or the spread of Uncomprehending why someone would do something nice for you to their own detriment (but this time in lighthearted context) its a gag comic its fine

A gorgeous batch of new old books! Well, they are new to us, donated by the family of a booklover and scholar of religion.
Among these rare books awaiting cataloging and boxing are Foxe's Book of Martyrs (1684), Calvin's Institutes (1611), and Cotton Mather's Magnalia Christi Americana (1702).
We may not get to read them cover to cover, but they certainly captivate us.
