Welcome one and all to PvWeek! The forefront for the lorefront.

In its world, there are only secrets.

In the world of Overwatch, there is no greater mystery than the Global Conspiracy (or GC, for short). The only person we know that is aware of the GC is Sombra. The rest of the world seems to be completely unaware of the GC’s influence. As are we. We haven’t seen much (explicit) actions or moves by the GC. Which is fair, conspiracies tend to be secretive and hidden. But still, there is a lack of development on what would be a major factor in the world of Overwatch. Hopefully, the story mode will shine some more light on the GC.

I say hopefully, because the only way we can learn about the GC is through Sombra. The hero who never gives out information easily. So, I don't think we're gonna learn much if Sombra is our only source. However, we can compile what little we know.

The Global Conspiracy has connections to Overwatch, Talon, Numbani, Volskaya, and Lumerico. There are also plenty of other entities it may have its hands in, but we don't have a full view of the picture. What I find most interesting is that there is no presence of the Shambali, nor Null Sector. Perhaps the Global Conspiracy has a more human focal point and means. Or perhaps the omnic centric groups are one of the connections cut off. Regardless, this is all we know of the Global Conspiracy. Which doesn’t leave too much to be interested in.

Furthermore, I'm not the biggest fan of the Global Conspiracy in general. The main reason for my displeasure with it, is the fact that it kinda steals Talon's thunder. Talon is supposed to be the shadowy organization pulling strings and fulfilling a secret, evil agenda. But nope, there is actually a conspiracy even higher which is currently manipulating Talon. It kinda takes the oompf out, you know?

There is, however, a way to rectify and redeem the GC. The Global Conspiracy should be a single person, not a collective. There are two candidates I have in mind.

Gaze into the Iris

The first sentient omnic was Aurora. Eventually, she reached tranquility and spread her gift across omnic-kind. This unfortunately costed her her life. (Zen ult causes you to die in Overwatch lore).

But what if death is not the end. What if through spreading sentience (or causing the Awakening as known in Overwatch lore) Aurora was able to find a new way of existence. Zenyatta even described her transcendence as beyond “this existence, this way of being,”. (Short story: Stone by Stone). Who’s to say there isn’t another way to live on?

What if Aurora is able to live on digitally through the power of the Iris? And if she’s one with the Iris, then a form like this makes sense.

However, there is one little hole in this theory. Why? Why is Aurora secretly manipulating some of the most powerful factions on earth? She very clearly believed in peace and understanding and selflessness. Granted, we haven’t seen any malicious actions from the Global Conspiracy. But still, why the secrecy, why the underhandedness? Aurora has no motive. She doesn’t even have connections to most (if not all) of these organizations. It doesn’t make to much sense for the GC to be her.

However, there is another candidate for the Global Conspiracy’s true identity. But this PvWeek has already gone on for too long. And I want a full PvWeek for the second candidate, as I have a lot to say about them. So, make sure you tune in next week for the final* PvWeek on a character that I've been dying to talk about.

Overwatch Crack Theory Time!!! (With a heavy does of serious character speculation)

Today's theory is what if Gabriel Reyes wasn't the first person to use the "Reaper" code-name?

What is Martina Reyes was the one who initially held the name?

NOW HERE ME OUT-

From what I remember the name "Reaper" was a name that circulated even before Reyes joined Talon, which wouldn't be possible because during that time he was with Overwatch, it was also during a time when he wouldn't betray Overwatch. (I think this was from his original backstory before it was retconned a bit, this is why this is a crack theory)

So looking at that while also looking at what little we know about Martina, it could be assumed that if she was an Overwatch agent, specifically Blackwatch, that she could have been the one with the code-name "Reaper".

Even if this isn't the case, I refuse to believe that Martina is a regular civilian character.

He husband was actively fighting Talon, thwarting they're plans and being an active threat to them, and you're telling me they didn't try and give her the Widowmaker treatment?

Not only that but Reaper and Widowmaker's interaction that mentions her supports the idea of her not being a defenceless civilian;

Widowmaker: Are you ever tempted to contact your wife? Reaper: No. Widowmaker: Afraid she would try to kill you? Reaper: I'd be surprised if she didn't.

This might just be a "joke" interaction, but I don't believe that. I believe that this is a confirmation that Martina was either a part of Overwatch or at the very least a highly trained individual. Trained enough that she wouldn't have any qualms about trying to kill her presumed dead ex-husband.

Also Reyes ran Blackwatch for around 20 years, and you're telling me that his civilian wife either had no idea or was ok with what they were doing? Absolutely not.

Anyway this was kinda a way of me saying I want Martina as a new Hero for Overwatch 2 or just some information about her other than she's Reaper's wife, they had a kid, and she is currently in a new relationship?

WE DON'T EVEN HAVE A CONCRETE DESCRIPTION OF HER!!!

Cause the picture in the Christmas comic could just as easily be Reaper's son and his family.

I was rereading your overwatch 2 speculation post when I saw that you said you can write a whole post about Widowmaker’s redemption through death. I would like to see this post please, for you and I have very different ideas about her redemption.

Thanks for the ask!

First off, just because I think it'll happen doesn't mean I agree with it.

To put my thoughts very, very simply: Widowmaker has done too much on-screen bad to ever be redeemed the proper way by Blizzard. There's a concept in storytelling called "character karma" which describes how to keep an audience satisfied by how characters act. It's a very basic concept: characters who do good things get rewarded, and characters who do bad things get punished. Generally, most stories that aren't explicit tragedies ensure that a character's karma gets appropriately balanced by the end of the story.

(There's a whole list of possible exceptions to this rule, of course, but please do consider: when was the last time you saw a villain win? Even if they win in the short term, they usually don't in the long term. Also keep in mind that Overwatch as a narrative (as its tone has been established so far) is not a tragedy. There are tragic characters, of course, but the overall story does not have a downward spiral. We as the audience know that Talon will be stopped at the end of Overwatch 2. I expect that I do not need to elaborate as to why, because we'd be here all week and I'd have to bring up the MCU.)

Okay, now back to Widowmaker- why do I think she won't get a redemption? Because she is Overwatch's most despicable villain. Hear me out.

She's Overwatch's most despicable because no other character in this franchise has killed an innocent person on-screen. By "on-screen", I mean depicted in a visual format- animated shorts and custscenes taking priority, then comics, then current-timeline short stories. And when we look at canon, on-screen killings, we actually have very few: we have Mondatta, and we have the mob boss that Reyes killed in Retribution. On-screen killings score the highest on the "bad guy" karma scale because they're tangible and immediate. They represent a character's current actions and they're things that directly impact the audience, too, who is invested in this current world and characters. Actions in the backstory and lore don't have the same punch for this reason.

The next step down on the "bad guy" karma scale is backstory/lore killing and torture, though- Doomfist, arguably the main villain of Overwatch, is hanging out right here with an unspecified number of murders at Numbani Airport, but the fact that the audience isn't shown it lessens the oomph. Hanzo would be here if Genji stayed dead, but given that he's not it significantly lessens the "bad guy"-ness of it. Similarly, I'd place Moira here, too, because we know she did the fucked up things to Reaper, Widowmaker, and (partially) Sigma, but we're only briefly shown Reaper's torture in her introduction short and that's it.

Given how much of a narrative and moral focus was put on Mondatta's assassination. . . I just don't think it's something that Widowmaker will be able to get away with. "Redemption" in storytelling is inherently a reward, and Widowmaker just doesn't have the character karma to justify that kind of reward, and I doubt Overwatch 2 will dedicate the screentime to it. Even though we as the audience know that she's a victim, Overwatch's narrative so far isn't painting her as someone who can be saved, not after she's crossed that moral event horizon.

However, however, however, it does leave one option- redemption by death. Redemption by death is a classic one because a heroic sacrifice does wonders to balance out character karma. It's quick, it's easy, it's free, acknowledging her tragic backstory while also making it so that they don't have to put the work in and ask the hard questions of "how would this character make up for what they've done?"

TL;DR: Because Storytelling Reasons, Blizzard isn't gonna spend the time to try and properly redeem her and will instead have her die for her sins.

Overwatch 2 Map speculation/theory

So as of late we've gotten a TON of news on the future of maps in Overwatch 2, from Antarctic Peninsula as Season 3's big new content to the confirmation of a new game mode with multiple new maps at once coming later this year!

This begs an interesting question though: how?

We're already at 8 new maps with just the first 3 seasons, and with a confirmed no less than 3 new maps being "required" for a new mode according to the devs, that's even more coming this year all at once. Which, seems like a lot, so... how?

Well one obvious explanation is that the new maps are all a part of the internal backlog of content due to Overwatch 2's weird development, but there's another detail with the two newest maps that may also help explain this extreme rate of new maps:

Shambali Monastery and Antarctic Peninsula are not completely new locations to Overwatch. They're based, at least in part, on Nepal and Ecopoint: Antarctica, two maps that have been in the game for years at this point. As a result, while obviously standard technical elements like map design and balancing wouldn't change, there would be a lightened load due to the ability to reuse at least some assets from these older maps to make new ones easier.

There's also the curious case of the ""lost"" Overwatch 2 maps.

First up is Gothenburg:

The homeplace of Torbjorn and his company, Ironclad Industries, this was one of the first maps shown for Overwatch 2 back in 2019. However, it was meant to be an Assault map, which as we know has been removed from standard play as of OW2, meaning this map has been without a mode for a while now. I highly doubt the work done on this map will outright go to waste, but it's unclear as of now what role this map will have in the future (outside of a very very likely presence in PvE).

Worth noting that if Gothenburg was meant to be an Assault map, and is being reworked into another game mode, that bodes well for some of the old Assault maps to be reworked as well, and would also explain multiple new maps coming this year all at once for the new game mode.

The other "lost" OW2 map is simply known vaguely as "India":

Now, we do know a few interesting details about the map: 1. It was mentioned specifically as "one of the largest maps in the game". This is important, as recent info about the upcoming new mystery game mode also claims that the maps in that mode would also be the largest in the game, making it very likely that India will be one of the maps for that mode.

2. While inconclusive, it's very likely this is the same location used for the small map shown for the Restoration Challenge login screen from back in November 2020, meant to go alongside the Stone by Stone short story.

This is a fully unique backdrop with a small but full model in-game, which between its visual cohesion to the India map, the contents of the story (that you can read yourself), and other details on the map, lead me to believe that this small login screen background and the India map are the setting of the short story: Suravasa. And as such, the map's final name will also likely be the more specific Suravasa, as most Overwatch 2 maps started out with a broad regional name (Toronto, New York, Rio) but ended with a more specific location name (New Queens Street, Midtown, Paraiso)

3. This map also appears to have a PvE presence, where according to the Blizzconline 2021 showcase, we can see Widowmaker swinging throughout the map, and then seemingly setting fire to it. These are undoubtedly the same location, and while I'll save the other story implications for some other megapost, it's definitely worth keeping in mind it has some major implications for (what we can assume to be) fairly early events in the story campaign (featuring Zenyatta!!)

So uh.

I don't know where I was going with this, I just wanted to dump all the information I've been pooling up about the weirdness of OW2's upcoming maps, even though I doubt even most of the Overwatch fans on this site care too much. I just don't have friends who are that into Overwatch so enjoy my ramblings that may be salvageable into further speculation fodder!

For the fanfic ask game: 🍬📗💘

Do you write for multiple fandoms? If yes, what is your favourite fic of yours for each fandom?

Yes! I write for multiple fandoms for enrichment purposes (what I learn in one fandom space can be translated to another and I am literally a hunter-gatherer for tropes and prompts for my friends of one fandom).

Uh, this answer will be long, but favourite fic for every fandom I've written for (as recorded by Ao3, as my Quizilla fics and FF.net fics are no longer accessible):

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Cliché Spy Tactics. Rivals-to-friends-to-mutual-idiotic-crush meet-cute! I still find it actively hilarious.

Red vs. Blue: Storytelling. An unreliable narrator fic told entirely by the world's most eccentric best friends.

Overwatch: Sostener. A start of redemption, built out of the Year 1 Overwatch Lore of Scraps. One of the things that endears me to this story is that I got to play with my SoCal heritage with it.

Warframe: Midnight Mother, Cinnabar Children wins by default, being my only Warframe fic 😂 I do think there's good about it though, simply from the two lines

Simaris snorted. “I’m so glad you’re not like them. You’re sensible.”

“False,” she teased, “I have you to be sensible for me. Like a father of ancient myth.”

Dungeons & Dragons: Dangerous Woman wins by default, but also because it spawned me to write a 72-page homebrewed worldbuilding document that's gained a life of its own.

DC Comics: Guardian. My beloved "Drag Black Adam from Lawful Evil to Lawful Good" fic. What stands of it now is largely me pulling together different instances of his backstory together into something remotely coherent. Runner up is A Study in Cyan, largely because it has a cat-based hero who compares the experience of her boyfriend slowly coaxing her down from her various traumas to "getting a cat out of a tree" and that's a metaphor I'll stand by.

Young Justice: It has 3 fics in it, but the Low-Key series overall is my baby. I think it gets extra shoutouts for having 80k words of platonic slow-burn (it takes Captain Cold a LONG time to figure out that Theo is His Kid. Like, not biologically his kid, but oh my gods is She His Kid. Like, emotionally. He has been dadding her for 75k words and he writes it off as being a team leader and a mentor for a baby hero. Understanding he's Being a Dad takes him an embarrassingly long time. His teammates knew before he did, the bastards [derogatory]. Like. Way before him. Right when she first stole his signature cold gun from him, the little shit [affectionate], which is at like. Chapter fucking One of the first fic in this series)

Guild Wars 2: EASY WINNER the four times that pact commander magna and shining blade asset canach gave the rumor mills false ammo and the one time they didn't. It's SO FUNNY. Fake dating during a dragon-slaying saga between two non-humans with different cultural spheres. All because a nosy 6-year-old thought they should have (gasp) friends.

Fallen Hero: Rebirth: Does it say? is still. So fucking good. I took a scene from the game and slipped in personal traits in between, lovingly-crafted flashback sequences pondering the nature of what it means to be human. Fall In Line is a very close second, as it unpacks a LOT of gender trauma for me (in a way that's subtly mirrored by Felicette's Everything. Fall In Line is more blatant about it than Felicette's arc will ever be).

Pokemon: Do Something Crazy! It's a story of healing and growth for everybody involved! And also includes speculative biology, because y'all know I Am Like This.

FFXIV: Ganzhyllsyn's 4 Steps to a Heist, hands down.

Critical Role: I was broken; now We're golden. I saw Essek and went "what if big brother?" and ran with it.

Fairy Tail: the heart is hard to translate / it has a language of its own. My sole attempt at a NaNoWriMo-esque challenge. I still like this weird translation of the manga's events as MMORP events and inter-guild drama.

Miraculous Ladybug: of Sages and Warriors. Duh. You knew this. Close seconds are O' Neighbour Mine and A Tricky Treat.

Na Daoine Maithe: I only have Lighting the Wick thus far, but there'll be more. This visual novel has lit brainworms and they are persistent.

And uh, if you're still here after all that, here are the OTHER TWO questions you asked (I'm sorry, I like a lot of things and thus write a lot of things)

Do you want to write something outside of fanfiction? If so, what about?

So like. I have three original project ideas, two of which are interactive fiction games. The first idea is that I take Dangerous Woman, strip it of all the DND stuff, and make that a novel in its own right (because that'd be extraordinarily easy for me to do, I'd just have to, y'know, finish it. I know how it ends, it's just a matter of landing the execution).

My two interactive fiction game ideas:

You play as an orphan in the setting of Dangerous Woman, ending up as one of King Oberon's adopted kids. You investigate a weird anomaly in Oberon's territory and meet a cast of odd characters (some of whom are romanceable, all of whom are friendable).

You play as someone who just got reincarnated as one of those flat villainess characters in a fantasy novel...that you, the player character, have never personally read. Frantically remembering the info-dumping of your best friend, you try to survive: will you give in to how easy it is to be what people think you are or will you fight it?

Is it easier to write angst or fluff?

Fluff. Any day of the week. I find a lot of what people consider to be angst to be boring melodrama and a lot of what people think of what I think of as angst to be "tame". Like a lot of things with me, both terms have an asterisk and a lot of variables, but fluff has fewer variables, so fluff wins.

Gabriel Reyes enters police force at min. age of 21 (to enter the LAPD you must be 20 yo at time of application and 21 by completion of training, high school education or equivalent or a 2/4 year degree)

finish a 4 year degree at the age of 22 (needed for becoming a commissioned/senior officer)

spend a minimum of a few years on the force

join the military ~25-26 as a senior officer

get recruited into the SEP as an already "respected veteran"

get recruited as into Overwatch as Strike Commander at ~28 (Gabriel s 50 by time of Retribution, 8 years before Recall so he's 50-51 during Zurich, Jack lead OW for ~20 years meaning he got promoted when Gabriel was 30-31 and the assumption is the Omnic War was longer than a few months)

run a covert ops team for 20 years which he somehow got trained for back in his short military career

had a family and is speculated to have split from his wife

get blown up at ~50

then spend 7 years fucking with Talon

I did say I was done but now I’m perplexed, you genuinely don’t seem to understand why I have no reason to believe what you say because you haven’t provided anything concrete, like you just don’t understand the concept of evidence. I’ll try to explainone last time myself as best as I can and why your arguments don't stand as is.

You said that in the leaks an unnamed consultant company was mentioned, however by your own accord the leaks are nowhere to be found now, so you can’t even see them yourself. You didn’t quote anything from the leaks or told me where to find archives or screenshots and you didn’t offer any precision on what exactly was said about the consultant company. You just implied that it was named as a reason why Spiderman 2 had to make rewrites in the leaks. That is not proof, your source here is literally just “trust me bro” tell me why I should take what you said at face value here ?

You said you “noticed patterns” and that you had a list of games that were negatively affected by SBI implying that SBI was the cause for games having to scrap content and make rewrites, yet you only listed spiderman 2 (you can’t make a list with only one thing ?!) and even then as I said above, there is no real evidence that spiderman 2’s cut content was because of SBI, and even how exactly it affected the game. So far you had only provided speculations. If you were to make a constructed argument here, you’d give me some of the names of games in that list and links to articles saying they had to make rewrites or to cut content. GIVE ME THAT DAMN LIST DINGUS >:(

Also most games have to cut content or make rewrites for a plethora of reasons, Elden Ring had to cut huge chunks of content for example because it was too ambitious, Overwatch 2 cut the whole PVE campaign and only released what are really just half-assed archive missions. Half-life 2 had to scrap 2 years of work because it wasn’t up to par with the rest of the game and SBI didn’t have anything to do with any of these games. The quality of the games I cited above vary a lot despite making cuts. Cut contents and rewrites aren't an indicator of quality just of setbacks in the developpment.

When I asked what you meant by corrupt, you said that the people working at SBI’s main goal was social justice, how is that being corrupt ? You then said that “they also make it clear in that same space the ultimate goal is to control how people think”, again, how do they make it clear, do you have any quote or link ?

Your main "proof" of SBI being bad and biggoted was you vaguely gesturing at twitter and telling me to go look at SBI’s employees posts, if you truly had something you could’ve given me ANYTHING, a twitter handle, a screenshot, an article. I am not going to scour twitter looking for proof for your argument. And from what I did see there was only one employee who asked people to report a steam group because they were getting harassed in mass because of said group.

You seem convinced that Miles being the "ambassador of his culture" as you put it is the fault of SBI, and not the original decision of the studio. Changing characters, and any big creative decisions are not what SBI do when they work with studios, they don't go around telling devs to completely change their characters. That wouldn't be feasible anyway because the edevs would have to redo pretty much everything if the main character was fundamentally changed. Go look at the links at the bottom of this post to find articles talking about what SBI really do.

Tl;dr : At any point in the conversation instead of getting increasingly angrier you could have just shut me up with solid proof If you had any. You weren’t even able to point to one of those videos peddling misinformation and ragebaiting. You gave no screenshot, no article, no link, no name or twitter handle, not even a quote. Nothing concrete, simply nothing at all. When you make wild claims like you did, the burden falls on YOU to substantiate it with evidence and proof. Claims alone aren’t arguments and they aren’t proof. People don’t live in your head; you need to actually build up an argument to convince others. I can't just take you at your words when you make insane claims.

But I know why you provided nothing. You didn’t notice patterns. You didn’t make lists. You didn’t do any research. All these ideas in your head aren’t yours, you watched a video, or read an inflammatory post that told you what to think, and what to be mad about. And you didn’t need convincing, you were already mad and wanted a target so you just went along with it because it was so easy to swallow. Do you even know why your claims are so vague ? It’s because the guy you got them from who made the steam group “SBI detected”, also had opinions based solely on vague feelings. He never even fucking played the games he claims are “different” and that "show a pattern" ! And here, some real fucking juicy PROOF (start at 2:19, he states he didn't play the game at 2:28).

Is there tokenization in media and video games ? Yes of course, and it sucks ! Is Sweet Baby Inc. the big bad that is surgically taking out all the fun from your favorite games ? Absolutely the fuck not ! There is no easy answer, no single target to remove that will magically solve everything. So launching a whole harassment campaign against them won’t make your games better, you’re just punishing people for nothing. Executives that want minorities’ money and who don’t care about art or storytelling are the ones making horrible decisions that make games worse as a result.

If after all of this you still don't want to buy games that SBI worked on at some point, great that's your choice, as long as you're not spreading lies and participating in harassment.

OP, I have a line up of questions. Hope you don't mind, but I love your blog, and these thoughts been bogglin' my mind since day 76.

1. If there was a hero you'd like to see, what weapon would you prefer them to have? Are there any primary weapons that we have yet to see in Overwatch that you'd like to see? (I love Illari's gunblade, especially her melee animation.)

2. Are there any speculations on heroes and their weapons befitting their personality?

(Tracer's are guns that are very spread shot (noting her upfront and open personality and sometimes spread out attentions, you find it hard for her to sit still, her sitting emote she's rocking side to side.))

(Mercy's gun quite literally being tucked away and using her staff primarily noting her weariness against violence, yet still needing it. Meanwhile Torbjörn's hammer's tucked away instead, maybe showing his willingness to fight, but is an engineer and a mechanic when it comes down to it.)

(I could be reading too much into that. Whoops.)

3. Are there any heroes and backstories and lore that you haven't discussed that you would really like to, but never got the chance?

Ok first question, my main wants for heroes are Lynx 17, Iggy and Sanjay (Mauga is there too but we are definitely getting him), for Iggy I would like for her to either have some musical based weapon (Like Lucio) or a bat, cause she is a regualar civillian so her having a simple weapon would be a very interesting change. For Lynx I think they would be a support with a hacking ability which is fun on it's own, but as for a regular weapon, I think it would be a mix of Symmetra and Zenyatta's secondary fire. For Sanjay I think he'd have a similar weapon to Sym and Lifeweaver but more direct and streamlined, idk what that would be exactly but I think it would be a lot more structure based.

Second question, I think all the weapons mirror the personality of those using them in some way or another. Some other examples I can think of is Cassidy's gun is effective at long ranges, signifying that he is more of a sniper type character (I've even seen some people call him a close range sniper) and Sombra's gun is quick and most effective at close ranges, she's a stealth based character so it makes sense that her weapon would work that way.

Third question, I want to talk about Echo and Orisa more but I need to read the other novels first but I am so busy and I don't have the energy to read when I'm not-

Other than that I do want to talk about Angela and Sombra's back stories a bit more, especially with what's implied happened to them after the crisis in contrast to each other and characters like Cassidy and Baptiste.
