The last decision you ever made was to follow him into the locker room. Once you saw him flex, he owned you. It started that day. You went back to his place with him, thinking that he’d bend you over and give you the rut of your life. That’s how fucking stupid you were.

You walked into the place and he started to take his clothes off. “I’m gonna take a shower. Make sure the dishes are done by the time I’m out” From that moment on, you were his house slave. You went to work each day to earn money for him. You came to his home at night to cook and clean for him. You slept on a thin mattress pad at the foot of his bed. When he brought women home to fuck, you slept on the floor in the basement.

One time when you spilled a beer while serving him while he was watching a football game, you saw the rage in his face build. But then he got calm, and told you to look at him. You never got the honor of looking him in the eye. So you knew it was going to be bad. “Go get my bat.” You knew by now to obey but you were confused. You went upstairs, got his bat, and brought it to him. You knelt and bowed your head, which was the correct position to be in around him until he gave you an order.

“No. Stand up. This has to happen to correct the problem. Lift your arms.”

You begged. You started to cry. You pleaded. He just watched you calmly, and let the scene play out for a couple of minutes. Then he held a finger to his lips and you went silent. You were well trained.

“I said, hold your arms up. And the longer it takes you to obey a direct order the worse it’s going to be for you.” He said this calmly, and looked you straight in the eye.

You did as you were told. He swung the bat full force into your ribs. You heard the crack, and you fell to your knees in agony.

He looked down at you while you gasped, trying to find air. Then he said calmly “Now go to the hospital and get that fixed up. When you get back, be sure to clean the kitchen. You can apologize to me tomorrow.”

the final dialogue exchange between obi-wan and anakin as friends, the moment before obi-wan leaves for utapau and anakin spirals into darkness, is a bit extended in stover's novelization from what's used in the movie, and it makes me sick haha with the amount of gentle validation obi-wan offers, how much he clearly loves anakin and believes in him... it's heartbreaking.

from the page before, we know they're touching here, with obi-wan gripping both anakin's mechanical hand and squeezing his arm, holding him tight as he praises him. anakin just apologized to him, said "your friendship means everything to me," showing vulnerability and admitting his flaws, so aware that he was disappointing obi-wan, and obi-wan can't help but reach for him, hold him, reassure him.

like those who say obi-wan didn't give anakin enough emotional support... i think he tried. he really tried. it just wasn't enough. like there's something so tender and beautiful about, you are a credit to the jedi order, you have greatness of spirit, your virtues are courage, generosity, compassion, commitment, you have done great things, i am very proud of you. he sees him, knows him, adores him.

but then, of course, the knife twist of the end of the chapter, with obi-wan departing, painfully innocent of the horror to come, and anakin walking slowly, head hanging, back toward his speeder because, of course, the chancellor was waiting. he's leaving obi-wan's gentle orbit and moving directly, inexorably into the open jaws of the sith. goodbye, old friend. jfc it hurts
