We have already mentioned the street at the crossroads with via Marconi, where a broad space is formed, a sort of open space that contains the portal of tziu (lord) Màriu Caboni or "de su canònigu" (of the canonic). When I was a kid I thought to be pretty you had to have blonde hair and blue eyes, and I thought that for a LONG time. And I remember watching some Barbie movie (Diamond Castle?) and the blonde Barbie main character made a selfless choice while the brunette Barbie main character made a (temporary) selfish choice, and I asked my sister why the blonde was the good one but the one that looked more like me was the "bad" one, or at least the blonde was always framed as the true main character. And it's true in other Barbie moves too. Idk, something about your post about the Barbie mermaids reminded me of that. It's funny how much our perception of beauty is affected by things like that.

This! ^^^ I'm no cartoon/doll expert (tho wouldn't that be a dream job or what), but I'm sure many generations were attacked by the aggressive Blond!Princess!MainChara and Brunette!Chambermaid/PeasantGirl!SecondaryChara thing. With ofc any type of POC character not existing at all.

It's scary to me to think about how much this really sinks into kids' heads. And it doesn't even have to be in the text of the story at all, like with the movie you mentioned, it's about the framing. Yuck.

Also, I'm really sorry about the Barbie movie experience. Tho I find it impressive and cool that while being a kid you actually noticed it and questioned it. God knows I never thought critically about it when I was small. I noticed it really only when I went into my Goth phase and actively began rejecting all that is blonde and pink (the Violet Tail Mermaid phase).

Anyway, It's so easy to make children believe things like that during their formative years, and it pisses me off we all had to see it everywhere and lil children like you had to wonder about why their look-a-like is always the worse person. Agree it has a huge influence on how we view beauty.

I hope toys and kid movies are better about that now.
