Tank lives! Though, photography of said tank is still a bit fraught.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Java fern arrived as a surprise two java ferns, and the clump of Anacharis was a full six inches longer than I expected to get, but it all works out and fills out the background and midground of this little tank nicely! And I found an especially cool Crypt to occupy one of the rear corners and spiral out as it grows, which turned out to be about five rooted runners of the species which I spaced a little and hopefully will start poking out towards the front and the right side of the tank for me to split off and add to any new tanks I might have in years to come. Also, Red Root Floaters. Like, a lot of them in the cup size I ordered. They're pretty happy since their newest leaves are unrolling and they're starting some new roots!
Tumblr media
Also hurrah for my little Banana Lily Plant getting here safe and with two fresh baby leaves! And the bajillion strands of Christmas Moss everywhere--on the wood, on the cave, weighted into the front, sides, etc. XD It's very lush already!

KEEP A HOBBY OUTSIDE OF PHOTOGRAPHY.
Tumblr media
Above: Lush greenery of the LOWBOY PLANTED AQUARIUM comes to view during the artificial sunrise of aquarium lighting.
It’s important to have interests outside of photography. Stepping away to explore, to utilize our talents and curiosity in other areas is nourishing for the soul, not to mention our mental health. Hobbies are perfect for this. Keep it fun. Try new things.
Several interests and hobbies outside of making pictures grab my attention. Aquaria is but one. Aquariums and fish keeping has been with me since I was a kid. Over the years I’ve had many aquariums including a high-tech coral reef. Learning about fish, water chemistry, light and how to create and maintain an artificial ecosystem is incredibly rewarding. Depending on where you reside, there may be a thriving community where one can meet like-minded people, share knowledge, and buy / trade sea-creatures, plants and gear.
One can immediately see how knowledge of light in photography crosses over to light needed to help grow and sustain life in saltwater and freshwater aquariums. And, brackish tanks of course.
THE LOWBOY.
My latest aquaria project, now running for several months, is a 50 gallon freshwater planted riverscape. Measuring 4 feet (L) by 2 feet (W) by 10 inches (H), this style of tank is named LOWBOY, as this is what its dimensions refer to. This setup includes aquatic plants harvested over several months from small clippings. It’s a cool-water ecosystem home to a school of about 40 fish, with a few other inhabitants and species of plant life. It is referred to as a high-tech planted aquarium because it utilizes CO2 injection and high quality spectrum of lighting. The aquarium rests on a custom-designed extruded aluminum stand which is both light in weight and incredibly strong. It has a minimalistic, industrial look that I find appealing as a juxtaposition to the rest of the room where it is situated.
WRAP-UP.
Designing the aquascape, water flow, filtration, lighting and feeding requirements to make an aquarium thrive is a creative process, somewhat of trial and error until one gets it just right. It’s a lot of fun. Just remember that planning and patience is key to being successful in this rewarding hobby.
A bonus of being a photographer is it provides an opportunity for a challenging project. Creating still images of an aquarium, such as the photograph in this post of the LOWBOY, with its combination of low ambient light, artificial sunrise of the aquarium lighting, moving and still subjects, reflections and geometry, make for an interesting shoot. One could choose to perfect the scene with complete cable management of the aquarium. Perhaps that'll be a future project as the setup is still in its infancy.
There’s such variety in aquariums and fish keeping that it easily can be a life long pursuit.
I hope you found this interesting. What hobbies interest you?

was doing some more cleaning today. found a mason jar that i had been raising fairy shrimp in several months ago, and after their lifespan had run out i’d put it on my windowsill to let it evaporate down so i could see if there were any eggs to hatch. however, it had not evaporated NEARLY enough and was still half full. i was ready to dump it under the assumption that it must be nasty in there, but when i picked it up i realized the water was still remarkably clear (not even any algae buildup on the glass), the plants inside were still green, it smelled clean (didn’t have that yucky sulfur-y stagnant water smell, but it smelled… green. hard to describe but if you’ve been keeping freshwater aquaria for any amount of time you know what i mean). took a closer look and it was BUZZING with ostracods !!!
immediately topped the jar off with distilled water, put an airline in, and gave em some extra light… got me kinda weirdly emotional. imagine being a shrimp minding your own business in a closed-off world that is slowly evaporating and all of a sudden some creature larger than you could ever comprehend notices you’re in there and immediately picks up your entire universe and moves it somewhere special where it can keep a closer eye on you, and then starts showering you with fresh water and air and light and food

Hey fish and water plant people!
Best place you know for getting healthy live plants, live invertebrates, and live fish (can be different for each, if you got different experiences.
The closest in-person aquaria place is literally almost an hour drive away (that isn't a fuckin' Petco/Petsmart Hell), so I'm interested in what breeders of fish and plants work best over shipping. I got a load of my tank set-up supplies delivered yesterday (though the tank itself and its heater, thermometer, cleaner siphon and one bit of hardscape are still coming this week), so really plant experience online is more what I'd need to know at the moment.
I wish the old independent pet store with the nice aquarium room and all the supplies and advice from the keeper in the town ten minutes away was still open, but I think it closed in the early 2010s long after my parents got their kissers and such. *heavy sigh*

Fun question! If you had to choose, which do you prefer: benthic or pelagic marine life? Does the answer change if it's "favorite organisms" vs "favorite for studying/research"?
Bonus question: marine vs. estuarine vs. freshwater life? :)
Keep up the awesome blog!!! I love everything you post!!! Have a great day!!! :D
Oh boy! Great questions that really got me thinkin 😅 I love pelagics for the unpredictability of seeing them rise out of the blue. Thinking of the massive megafauna that exists out there out of view, so rare to see despite their size in the marine equivalent of the desert, is really magical to me!! But like you said, studying benthic life really is a special thing since they are so rare to find, especially in a study-able condition. Truly delicate aliens down there!
For your bonus question, how do I choose! I will say from an aquarist perspective, I've fallen in love with freshwater. It's so rewarding to recreate an ecosystem in miniature, which is relatively easy even for home aquaria since so many freshwater fish and inverts are so small. And the plants! I love corals but they are so terrifying to keep (for me at least, from experience), but I love planting a demure sprout and watching it take over a tank in the course of a year.
Thanks for the ask :) and feel free to reply your own thoughts!

Black Clover's Four Archangels
Tumblr media
After today's recent chapters, and doing some bear minimum research, I have had this thought in my mind for quite some time.
Although not outright stated, it's pretty clear that Lucius' Paladins are based in angels. And we now know that he has at least four at the moment: Sister Lily, Damnatio Kira, and two others.
While the fact that there are four may be a coincidence, I nonetheless did some digging and it's my belief that these four are meant to be based off the four archangels Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael.
●Sister Lily and Gabriel
Tumblr media
As the very first Paladin, Sister Lily is really the only one we can breakdown with strong evidence so far.
Sister Lily most likely represents Gabriel, Archangel of Resurrection.
"Resurrection" is very important to remember, seeing how Sister Lily is capable of using healing magic. Alongside resurrection, another pretty spot on connection is that Gabriel is often associated with the Aquarius constellation and the element of water which obviously ties into her magic and name: Lily Aquaria.
However, the most damning connection, and the main reason I'm typing this up, while Gabriel is often depicted as male it is just as common to depict Gabriel as female. And, one of Gabriel's most prominently used symbols happens to be a very particular type of flower
Tumblr media
Gabriel is represented holding Lily flowers.
●Damnatio Kira and Micheal
Tumblr media
The only other character we know of with Lucius is Damnatio, and while he hasn't been shown as a Paladin yet, it is very likely he will be one of them.
Damnatio has some of the strongest connections to his counterpart; Michael, Archangel of Justice.
If that doesn't speak for itself, I honestly don't know what will. Although he doesn't have the same elemental connection (Michael being connected to Fire), Damnatio in Latin means Condemnation: "The action of condemning someone to a punishment; sentencing."
The archangel Michael is often depicted weighing the souls of mortals with his scales.
Tumblr media
●The Other Two
Sister Lily and Gabriel, Damnatio and Michael.
While we have no idea so far who the last two figures next to Lucius are, if my theory is right then they will represent the archangels Raphael and Uriel.
Raphael is the archangel of Love, Joy, and Laughter. Connected to the element of Wind, and is most interestingly known as the "Keeper of the Tree of Life". Very specifically this is the Sephirot, which is connected to the reincarnated elves, so one of the figures is most likely Patoli or has a connection to the elves.
Uriel is the Archangel of Nature. Connected to the element of Earth, and is the "Keeper of Prophecy". I don't have a whole lot of theories for this one, but if I had to guess; They're most likely connected to Charlotte, since we still have her whole cursed family thing unresolved. My second, less likely, guess is that they're connected to Mimosa and Kirsch...because Plants, and nature I guess???

My 75 gallon Central African tank!
Stocking and such below
Fish/Inverts
Senegal Bichir (Polypterus senegalus) x2
AKA Dinosaur Bichir. They get 9-12 inches, they're badass predators but the tankmates will be safe, too big to be aggressed upon. I've got one albino and one normal one. Their names are Bulk and Skull, like from Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. They have true lungs and can breathe people-air! It's cool to watch them do it.
Leopard Bushfish (Ctenopoma acutirostre) x1
AKA Spotted Climbing Perch. Gets about 5-9 inches but is a slow grower, so considering moving him to a 20 long with one of my Krib pairs and my Synos when I eventually move them and he can return to the 75 when big. In the wild these guys drift along until they're close enough to nab some prey that thinks they're just a leaf. His name is Demi because of the famous Demi Moore photo.
Peters's Elephant Nose Fish (Gnathonemus petersii) x1
AKA Ubangi Mormyrid. By far my most interesting guy. He's an electric fish, and that silly proboscis is called a Schnauzenorgan, covered in electroreceptors, which he uses to snuffle around for worms. He has an organ in his ass that generates an electric field. No, really. They've also got the highest brain to body oxygen usage ratio of any vertebrate. He's super cute and full of personality! Wild caught, too, so this guy traveled across half the planet to get to me. In ancient Egypt these guys were believed to have eaten the penis of Osiris and were worshipped in the city of Oxyrhynchus.
Kribensis (Pelvicachromis pulcher) x4
AKA Rainbow Cichlid. An African cichlid that's not an asshole? Sign me up. Well, they're still assholes but only to each other. You probably could spot a full grown 4" male, a pair of 2" female and male, and a 1.5" female in the video if you look closely. Incredibly beautiful fish, very aggressive when they breed, so I plan to separate one pair of kribs into a 20g and leave the other in the 75. One of the rare instances where the females are the flashier ones!
Congo Tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) x6
One of the larger tetras kept in aquaria, they get about 4 inches or so too. Semi-aggressive, which here just means they steal everyone's food and get fat, so I have to distract them with flakes on one side of the tank so everyone else can eat. Beautiful, shiny blues and reds and clear fins. Love 'em. Way overpriced for tetras though, like 8 bucks per! Comparably sized South American tetras are still $2.50 at PetSmart.
African Butterfly Fish (Pantodon buchholzi) x1
You've probably seen them in nature documentaries. They're those guys that float at the waters surface looking like a butterfly or a leaf until they see some unsuspecting bug above the water and then BAM! They jump way up and snatch 'em. Relative of the Arowana. Beautiful little guy, goes bananas bonkers when I feed him crickets.
Upside-Down Catfish (Synodontis nigriventris) x3
AKA Blotched upside-down catfish. Adorable little guys with naturally tubby bellies. They're friendly and I love them, though they'll be moving to the 20 gallon long with kribs and Demi. They really do swim upside down!
FALSE Upside-Down Catfish (Synodontis nigrita) x2
Ohohoho, you fool, you fucker. You thought you bought upside down catfish, didn't you? Well, now I'm gonna get a foot long and poop a lot and suck the slime coat off your expensive fish and kill them and look so sillycute while doing it. AND I won't even swim upside down. Will be banished to local fish store rehoming tank to be sold under the correct name this time.
Snails (Various sp.) x999999999
I've got Malaysian Trumpet Snails (intentional), Nerites (intentional), Ramshorns (unwanted hitchhikers), and Bladder Snails (unwanted hitchhikers).
Plants
Jungle Val (Vallisneria americana)
AKA Eelgrass. Not technically African but it was cheaper than the African-native Corkscrew Val.
Narrow Crinum (Crinum calamistratum)
AKA African Onion Plant. Slow growing and small so far but looks cool fully grown.
African Water Fern (Bolbitus heudelotii)
AKA Congo Fern. Really sickly and shitty from PetSmart but should improve.
Cameroon Moss (Plagiochilaceae sp.)
Really pretty moss I attached to some driftwood in small bunches, should grow in soon enough.
Anubias (Anubias heterophylla, Anubias barteri)
Probably the most well-known African aquatic plant besides lucky bamboo, you'll find this in a TON of fish tanks.
Tiger Lotus (Nymphaea zenkeri)
Still just a wee baby, eventually this'll grow into some rockin' red lily pads.
Ammania (Ammannia gracilis)
Beautiful stem plant with red-tipped leaves. Lovely pop of color.
Duckweed (Lemna minor)
Fuck this guy kill this guy. Duckweed hell one million years forever!!!!!!!!!!
Tank Setup
75 Gallon (idk brand) I believe dimensions are 48x18x21
Fluval 407 Canister filter w/ spray bar
Secondary sponge filter with air pump rated for up to 100gal
Tertiary filter running water softener pillow and establishing spare biomedia
Substrate is pea gravel and Black Diamond Blasting Sand, coarse grit.
Wood is California driftwood/ghost wood iirc, got it at a reptile expo.
Light is Finnex Planted+ 24/7 (I just leave it on auto mode)
Heaters are 3 preset tetra 100W heaters. Nothing fancy.
There's caves made out of PVC piping covered with pond foam.
That bag you see is weighing the driftwood down since it's a little new, it still wants to float.
Leaf litter is mostly oak and live oak and a bit of catappa.
This shit all cost me way more than was reasonable at all jesus christ it was pricy but it's so worth it.

Ficlet: The Aquarium (B2J protags, No Gem Roads AU by @vinylroadsjunction)
Enjoy!
Mayday and Zuke were on their tour across Vinyl City. So far they have been to the “park”(Trees! Plants! Squirrels!!) and the “supermarket”(Food! Food!! Food!!!). It was amazing.
So Mayday was extremely excited to go to the “aquarium”. Apparently, it was a place where water animals were put into tanks. And for protecting and finding out new things about them. (Homeworld didn’t do any of those things, they just took and took and took until nothing was left.) Gigi and Zam were quietly talking to each other as the four made their way to Akasuka.
Zam turned to look at the two gems. “And here we are! Aquaria VCCC! It’s the largest aquarium out here!” He gleamed. “Hopefully the discount code works.” Gigi groaned. “We’re trying to entertain some guests here, zip your lips about that, man.” Zam finger gunned. “Wish me luck! I’ll be right back.” He disappeared into the building. He will come back, Mayday. He will be alright.
“Thank you for taking us here. I honestly like all the colors here.” Zuke was taking a look at a picture on one of the pillars. Many colorful creatures, large and small, were seemingly swimming. May found the large creature with sharp teeth and fins cool. Maybe she can make friends with them?
“The discount code worked! We can all go in there, at half price!” Zam was back with four pieces of paper, looking satisfied. “Rockstars, hand them to the people standing over there.” he pointed at the human smiling as a young one gave the paper.
Mayday rushed to the entrance, paper clasped in her hand. The human greeted her with a smile. Why was everyone so nice to her? “May I see your ticket?” May assumed the “ticket” was the paper so she handed it out to the human. She gave a soft giggle as the human stamped her hand. Strange, where was the ink? “For reentering, please show your hand okay?” May nodded. “Have a nice day!” The human waved. May gave her a grin, and yelled, “YOU TOO!” The human looked a little, surprised, but satisfied.
The rest of the team were with Mayday at the other side. It was so pretty, the water sparkling and the creatures swimming. “The biggest tank is over there, with the shark inside. Wanna check that out first?” Gigi asked. He was pointing at the really cool looking creature Mayday saw on the pillar a while back. Mayday decided that from now on instead of “squirrels”, “sharks” were the best creatures around on Earth.
“Zuke, let’s go!” Mayday tugged Zuke’s arm, who seemed to be in such awe he couldn’t move. They all dashed, and found themselves facing the shark tank.
In the tank, there were other creatures swimming. So carefree. So cool! So pretty!!
Mayday must have been standing there for a while, because she heard Zam yell, “Where is Zuke?!”
Zuke. Was. Gone.
“I was keeping an eye on them man. How did he just go ‘poof’!” Gigi’s brows were furrowed.
“The government took him! They are gonna cut him up and put him on display and-” Zam was going crazy with his arms, almost as if he was about to cry.
Zam and his ramblings were cut short when someone yelled “Look! Is that a merperson?”
The troublemaker was there, in the tank, petting a shark. The shark looked surprisingly happy, eyes closed in what seemed to be bliss. That wasn’t fair! May should have joined him! He even managed to shapeshift his legs into fins! He should’ve asked May first, and they could have gone together!
Zuke found Mayday and her human friends, pointed at them, and waved. Gigi waved back.
Now there was a huge crowd around the fishtank. Zam sighed. “At least this aquarium is probably going to get more visitors for a while.”
