2016 VoicePlay spring events — love all around

A busy winter for VoicePlay rolled into equally packed spring months, full of concerts, educational outreach, personal projects, and growing families.

Here, there, and everywhere

The guys began their spring with a few weeks working on new music at home, during which they fit in a colorful corporate gig alongside Layne's sister- and brother-in-law.

The second weekend in April was an absolute whirlwind. They started just outside Denver at the annual CHSAA music festival, where they got to spend two days with student vocal groups, and found a reminder of a friend.

.

From there they headed east for the Boston Sings festival and the CARA ceremony. They didn't win for their "Phantom" video, but they did get to see Deke receive his well-deserved lifetime achievement award in person.

The next day, they drove out to Worcester for a matinee concert and a radio interview with Bonnie Johnson on "Colors of Jazz" before flying back home.

The next weekend, the boys traveled back to Wisconsin to make up the second show that had been cancelled by winter weather earlier in the year. One stalwart young fan was so determined to see them that she and her prom date skipped the big dance in favor of the show.

During a brief few days back at home, Eli proposed to his girlfriend Ashley before the boys hopped on the Disney Magic for the first of four cruises they'd booked over the next couple of months.

The other work didn't stop just because they were at sea, though. Some of their downtime was spent creating new arrangements and rehearsing for upcoming video shoots. (They did get up to some shenanigans on board, of course.)

After the Magic ended, they had a few days at home before hopping aboard the Disney Wonder.

During the few days between the second and third cruise gigs, they filmed the video for "My Shot". Also, Eli and Ashley acquired a new little buddy, a pup named Anna (after the Frozen character).

Then during the three weeks between the third and fourth voyages, VoicePlay recorded their "Aca Top 10 — Bro Country" video with Chris Rupp, released the "Aca Top 10 — Old School Rap" video, and held a launch day event for "My Shot" at Full Sail University.

Just before they were scheduled to set sail again, Layne and Cyndi welcomed their daughter Doris to the world. (Her new uncles were pretty excited, too.)

A little help from their friends

With that happy event, the contingency plans for Layne's paternity leave kicked in, including a few local friends. On their final cruise of the season, Max Herskovitz stepped in on percussion. Erik Winger also subbed for Tony so he could focus on finishing preparations for the impending public launch of PattyCake Productions.

The weekend after they returned to dry land, the guys scooped up buddy Antonio Fernandez once more and trundled down to the Gulf Coast for a concert in Pinellas Park.

By the time they were ready to head up to Ohio for camp at the end of June, Layne was back in the mix (at least for non-oceanic matters), but that's a story that deserves its own post.

Wahahaha, I finished my room! Turns out the small room is just perfect in size for a cozy bedroom! Now I just need the rugs Zeki sells in his night market to not be so expensive...

Moving the bed out of the main room means now I actually have space for all the cooking stuff, and I am definitely subscribing to a large room when it comes to making myself a cooking space. I can have the kitchen on one end and the eating area on the other, that's fine, I just need space to work.

Speaking of space to work, Uncle B told me that he's not supposed to sell me any more garden soil, which is super not cool. I can totally handle more gardening space! But he said Auntie Del was worried about me just living on my home plot. Maybe I can talk him into one or two more later on...

Aaaahhh, I meant to get a picture of Jel, but then he turned and looked at me and I panicked. But he was so happy to see me, I don't think he noticed the Kamera.

It has been a bit since we talked, so he said he'd thought I'd forgotten about him. I could never, but I also couldn't tell him I'd never, so I just started talking about the garden, and the preserve jars, and the house, and he just... he listened. It was probably a good thing I had to run off to Bahari Bay before sundown. If nothing else, that gave me an escape excuse, and I could blame any face redness on the fact that I practically ran the whole way. Jeez. Why is he so good at making me feel flustered? Reth and Jina are both nice too, but they don't make me feel like he does!

Bahari, at least, was profitable. I finally found some Palium! Man. That's hard to find. I also found a weird little cave near some underground geysers!

I think I was directly under the bluffs? I wonder what this place was for. Lark said they think it was some sort of temple, but I think it looks more like a power source. Like whatever that used to be, that was something to do with this Flow that everyone's always going on about.

I feel like, if I could just get all the things I need for the Fish constellation in the Night Sky Temple--or even solve Jina's new riddle--that I could maybe start figuring out what some of this other stuff is. I've found so many doors that look like they need a flow battery, like the one I put in that door next to the Phoenix Temple place. But I can't find any more batteries...

I spent the evening moving stuff around again. I think on the left of my land, I'm going to have tents for things like the sawmills and the kilns and stuff, so that when it rains they don't get wet or rusty, but also so it looks less cluttered. And then on the right, there's my garden, and this little cozy spot here!

Hm... I should plant more trees when I wake up. I have a bunch of seeds for that, and I wouldn't mine having that be a bit more tree... oh, no, I just had an Uncle B joke hit me. It would be more Poplar-ated if I planted trees.

Damnit, now I need to go smother myself with a pillow. Maybe Dad will loan me one...

Oh, and Elouisa asked me what my favorite cryptid thing was, and I said a platypus. She told me that was a human myth, but I swear it's not! I remember what the thing looks like, and I know it was a real thing.

I just... I have no idea how I know this.

I've been doing that a bit more lately. It's kind of unnerving, but I can't really talk to anyone about it. Not even other humans. Lark has their own trials to deal with.

....maybe I'll go iron hunting with Lark later tho. They complained to me that they're struggling to find some, and it'd be fun to hang around another human again. Like. On purpose.

Week 5: Last days of the Australian Trip!

Hi everyone! This week has been busy so here’s a late recap of January 31 through Febuary 7.

The week started with the bus from Byron Bay to Gold Coast. During the 24 hours we had in Gold Coast, the weather was pretty bad. We got caught in a thunderstorm walking back from the beach, but we were faced with Australian hospitality when we were offered a lift down the road back to our airbnb by a woman outside her apartment building which we found shelter under. It’s true — Australians are fundamentally kind people!

The next day, before the bus from Gold Coast to Brisbane, I went from Surfer’s Paradise to Burleigh Heads to see the apartment where my parents lived in for a bit back in the day! The beach was absolutely beautiful. Later, we arrived in Brisbane and explored the city. At night, we went to Howard Smith Wharves which is an outdoor food and drink spot with amazing city and bridge views. 

Our last day in Brisbane was eventful. We started the day with communal hostel breakfast (hostels in Australia so far have exceeded expectations!). Then we walked around some markets and went to the Museum of Brisbane which was very unique and immersive. We then had a couple hours on a little GoBoat down the river which was a fun way to see some more areas around the river. Afterwards, we went to the Koala Sanctuary! We were able to feed kangaroos and wallabies in a completely open area - there were hundreds of them! Then, we got to hold a koala! We also saw tasmanian devils, dingos, and a platypus among other wildlife. The sanctuary was amazing since it is a place of rehabilitation for these animals.

I flew back to Sydney the next day and was pretty exhausted from the traveling. Over the weekend, I went back to the glebe markets. On Monday, I had my final exam for Econ, my summer class! It was challenging but felt great to finally be done and have a week without class before term 1.

The end of my exam marked the start of o-week which is orientation week at UNSW — a week of tons of activities, free stuff, and students all over campus! There were so many club stalls on campus (it even made festifall look small!) and I got to meet so many people moving into my dorm community. It was great to find basically every meal for free somewhere on campus and try interesting Australian snacks and meals. I also got to participate in the dorms’ dance competition as part of my dorm’s team, and I learned the Nutbush, an Australian line dance! The start of orientation week definitely felt like summer camp.

Apart from that, it houses eucalypt woodland, subtropical rainforest and freshwater systems. The forest is also home to 200+ native animal species that remain protected in the bushy lands. You will spot the day frog hopping around in this forest or the giant Platypus every once in a while. The Corymbia Henyri is also spotted here in abundance. Apart from the huge trees and species, it also holds a cultural importance, especially for the first nations. You may also find some incredible gold mines while in here. You should take your motorhome hire Brisbane to this national park while in Brisbane. You may take half a day to complete this tour. 2.    Samford Regional Park It is a conservation park that is located 20 minutes away from Brisbane CBD. It houses plenty of plants and animal species native to Australia. It is more of a protection forest designed for these species. There are species of mammal, reptiles and birds that seem endangered outside, inside this forest.you will also find ironbarked trees and flying foxes in this forest. It is the best place to quit the stressful life of a city and enjoy the weekend. There is a separate picnic area where you can park your campervan rental Brisbane and enjoy a picnic. There are no garbage or trash bins in the park so you need to take the garbage with you at the end of the day. You can try finishing this on day one itself, and end the day by returning to your hotel. 3.    Moreton Island National Park This is housed exactly at the doorstep of Brisbane city, and houses several reefs and wetlands. You will also find some seagrass and meadows while exploring this national park. It is spread from Caloundra to the Gold Coast, which is about 125 km. you will see many beaches and bays while exploring the national park. This forest was developed to protect the marine and coastal species, which is what you are more likely to find on your visit here. This national park houses several types of fish, crab, birds and turtles. Spend your day two on Moreton Island and Tamborine National Park. You can always end with one and come back for a biking trip in Brisbane CBD. 4.    Tamborine National Park It is an hour away from Brisbane, inside Gold Coast. The forest was created to protect the remaining species of Tamborine (plants and animals). You will spot some of the rare species here, nestled happily inside the park. You are likely to spot the Brush Turkeys and Albert’s Lyrebird in this forest. You might also find the rare Richmond birdwing butterfly while visiting the forest. 5.    Kondalilla National Park It is again one of the finest national parks that is surrounded by dense and green bushes and trees. The dense eucalyptus trees are seen just above the Kondalilla waterfalls. There are several viewing points in this forest. You can park your motorhome hire Brisbane at these points and get a classic view. You should try soaking in the culture and have biking trips around Brisbane CBD to learn more about the history of this land to conclude your trip.
