Somewhere on a remote mountainside in Colorado’s Rockies, a latch flipped on a crate and a wolf bounded out, heading toward the tree line. Then it stopped short. For a moment, the young female looked back at it’s audience of roughly 45 people who stared on in reverential silence. Then she disappeared into the forest.
She was one of five gray wolves Wildlife officials released in a remote part of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains on Monday to kick off a voter-approved reintroduction program that was embraced in the state’s mostly Democratic urban corridor but staunchly opposed in conservative rural areas where ranchers worry about attacks on livestock.
...
It marked the start of the most ambitious wolf reintroduction effort in the U.S. in almost three decades and a sharp departure from aggressive efforts by Republican-led states to cull wolf packs. A judge on Friday night had denied a request from the state’s cattle industry for a temporary delay to the release.
The group watched as the first two wolves — 1-year-old male and female siblings with gray fur — were set free. The male bolted up the golden grass, running partially sideways to keep an eye on everyone behind, then turning left into the trees.
The crowd watched in silence, then some hugged each other and low murmurs started up.

i tend to swear both on here and in my writing, so if you're sensitive to that, i don't think my blog or work is for you. i also use the word 'queer' a lot since i self-identify as such, when i do choose to self-identify.
i'm interested in so much, which would be impossible to fully state. there are so many new things out there and i love learning about them all!! this blog is mainly for writing but i'm not strict on that.
i also am pretty sure i'm neurodivergent (no diagnosis or anything yet) and tend to delve into hyper-fixations for weeks at a time. if i haven't posted for a while, it's probably because of one of my other hyper-fixations or school.
i'm going to college for my bachelor's in graphic design, which might make my responses during the school year delayed.
i'm always open to ask or tag games!! it might take me a few to respond but i'll respond.

─── writing -⋆⋅☆
you'll find a lot of diverse characters, the found/chosen family trope, romance or rom-com, angst, and references to actual history or historical events within my work. sometimes i throw in a little art fact since i'm an art student. in nearly every one of my works you can find a prominent lgbtq+ character, too.
i write for original works and fanfiction alike. i often alternate what project i'm writing on and tend to leave wips unfinished. there's no one specific fandom that i'm in since i tend to dabble in everything.
i enjoy reading all sorts of stories, but some of the tropes and genres that have a special place in my heart include:
[ genres : romance . action . sci-fi . dystopian . heists . cyberpunk . horror . comedy . mystery ] [ tropes : friends to lovers , enemies to lovers , fake/pretend relationship , college au , coffee shop au , domestic , fluff , angst ]

“By day, the shrubby clifftops of North Head, a thriving slice of bushland at the northern entrance of Sydney Harbour, Australia, are a popular walking spot for urban nature enthusiasts. But when night falls, this coastal reserve is ruled by a colony of bush rats, one of the most common native rodent species scampering along the shores of southeast Australia. For anyone lucky enough to spot one of the tennis ball–sized rodents, their endearing appearance sets them apart from their invasive relatives.
“They’re like little dumplings,” says Viyanna Leo, a wildlife ecologist at the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, a nonprofit organization working with the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust to conserve North Head, adding “[they’re] quite round and fluffy.”
Tumblr media

The Project
The 250-hectare headland hasn’t always been a bush rat kingdom, though. Following a century of being vilified and exterminated from areas around Sydney Harbour, the bush rat population in North Head was wiped out decades ago by urbanization, habitat fragmentation, and predation by feral cats and foxes. The reserve was overrun by a gang of black rats, an invasive species that’s found on every continent except Antarctica. While bush rats help maintain the ecosystem’s native species, black rats wreak havoc. At North Head, they wasted no time plundering the burrows and tree hollow nests of small mammals and gorging on bird eggs, says Leo. “They were causing a lot of problems.”
But when given the chance, bush rats can be formidable ecological gatekeepers. In 2014, Leo and her team began reintroducing bush rats to North Head to drive out their intrusive counterparts. The rewilding effort is working, with annual wildlife surveys showing that black rat numbers dropped from an estimated 112 in 2019 to 29 by 2020. In May 2021, a mere nine black rats were captured. The project harnesses the bush rat’s innate territorial streak. The native rodents outcompete black rats for habitat and food, and Leo suspects that North Head will one day be a bush rat–only stomping ground. “If they’ve got the fort, they can maintain the territory,” she says.
For the reintroduction effort, Leo and her team captured 180 bush rats over three years from abundant populations in Muogamarra Nature Reserve and Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, both located roughly 30 kilometers northwest of North Head. The researchers lured the rats into traps with a wholesome meal of oats, honey, and peanut butter, then assessed the animals’ genes to ensure they were diverse enough to build a flourishing new colony at North Head. After inserting a microchip into each rat, the team set the rodents free on the headland...
The Importance of Native Rodents
While most reintroductions focus on giving threatened species a boost, it’s just as important to prioritize common species in conservation efforts and rewilding projects, says Emily Roycroft, an evolutionary biologist specializing in native mammals and population genetics at the Australian National University. For instance, native rodents act as tiny engineers that shape the ecosystems they inhabit, spreading seeds, churning the soil, and keeping insect populations in check.
Native rodents provide fundamental ecosystem services, says Roycroft, who was not involved in Leo’s project. “We know that if [rodents] were once there, they were playing a role.”
Relocating common species like the bush rat can also provide a good dress rehearsal for riskier reintroductions, adds Roycroft. If something goes wrong when reintroducing a common species, there’s often enough time to tweak the approach and try again. But when researchers are dealing with a species that is on the brink of extinction, they only have one shot to get it right. “It might be the last chance for that particular species to establish a new population,” says Roycroft.
Leo suspects the bush rats have reclaimed their territory for good at North Head, which is now free of feral cats and foxes and protected from urban sprawl. “They’re pretty much established now,” she says. “I think they’ll continue to do well.”” -via Hakai Magazine, 1/11/23

Greetings!
Tumblr media
I seem to have gotten a lot of new followers over the past few weeks, and perhaps everyone isn't going to look at my pinned post, so I thought I'd do an introduction — or a reintroduction — of me and my account.
My name is Sapphire (yes it's my IRL name) and I'm probably too old to be on Tumblr, but I've been here for a long time and I'm not going anywhere any time soon. I'm a nerd, a dog mom, a lawyer, and I'm a person with low vision.
This is not a YOI fan blog. I get asked on occasion about it (probably because of the names of two of my main characters) and I'm sorry if you came here looking for that. If you want more elaboration about my Yuri & Victor, please look at this post.
This blog is ostensibly a Sims 4 blog. That having been said, I'm a writer above all, so although I do enjoy playing The Sims and I post a lot of Sims screenshots, my true passions here are my stories. Just so you're aware, some of my writing is not "illustrated" by Sims screenshots at all.
My currently active stories are: - The Art of Redemption - Caroline & Co. - Assorted Short Fiction
Links to other stories that are either completed or paused can be found in my pinned post.
I also make CC (@stargazer-sims-cc), reblog other people's CC (@stargazer-sims-finds) and reblog non-CC posts that I like (@stargazer-sims-reblogs). *** please note - my CC blog is currently empty because I'm in a process of sorting and reorganizing it, but I anticipate it being back up and running within the next few weeks. Meanwhile, you can find some of my CC and builds here on the main blog by searching the tag #made by sapphire
I like to chat and interact and I'm happy to help whenever I can, so please feel free to send me asks or send me a friendly DM any time. I also love comments. I'll never find it annoying if you reply to my posts, and I'm not against "like spam" so feel free to have at it!
It's nice to have you all aboard, and I'm glad you decided to follow me!

Hi! It’s been a while since I did anything like this! My name’s Katie – and I publish under K. E. Koontz over on Amazon, and Abalonetea on patreon! I used to train horses for a living but now I’m a professional freelance ghostwriter and dev/con editor (I sometimes do beta reading and outline making too!).
I’m the sole working individual in a household of four (plus many furry friends), partially blind, fully disabled, and always looking to make new friends in the writeblr community. My favorite thing in the whole world to write about are werewolves and you’ll see them a lot on my blog. I’m a big fan of horror, high fantasy, and any story that lets me mash twenty different genres together.
My big end goal is to eventually not have to ghostwrite other people’s works and to just rely on my own writing to support the family. It’s a far off dream but I’m slowly getting there!
But Katie, what do you write about? This answer changes constantly but some of my current favorites right now are…
Twice Bitten, the sequel to my YA werewolf novel, Howl, which is also about werewolves
Gorehound, the sequel to my horror novel, Coaltown, which is about monsters in the Alaskan wilds
SHED, which pretends it’s a monster story but really it’s a psychological thriller about loving your best friend so much that you’ll do literally anything to keep them safe
Of Wolves, a 2nd person PoV story about zombies in the Appalachian mountains
Abyss, a super long high fantasy about healers and curses and chosen ones (there’s a werewolf here too)
The Possession of Joshue Roe, as the title implies a possession horror novel but this one is also about best friends
(and if you've been here a while and you're going what about IDS85? well, that one is finished and getting published next month oops)
Some other story ideas I really like but I’m not actively writing are…
Like Clay, a super long story about monster hunters, angels, and werewolves, and also two guys that have the absolute worst lives you’ve ever seen
Pretty Things, following an Anatolian shepherd puppy who has to guard his flock of sheep from wolves once the farmer goes missing
Three Years A Dog, this one is more werewolves but high fantasy
The Summer Murphy Jones Dies, also about werewolves but it’s set on the coast
Dog Hunt, this one is about werewolves and the outline is at 8k and not finished yet
I try really hard to stay up to date on what people are doing on here but my brain is pretty much mush at all times and The Struggle Is Real.
You can catch me on @sweetwatertales too, which is where I post about my romance novel endeavors (Greek Vacation, published, but soon to be also Midwest Station) and eventually I’ll get active on my crime thriller blog, @gravelydevoted where I mostly will be posting about Meathook and Capetown Killers.

Some ecologists are calling for predators such as wolves and lynx to be returned to Ireland
They say this would help control Ireland's expanding deer population and so protect forests and crops
Sheep farmers in particular say they fear attacks on their animals and the threat to rural communities
The animals were hunted to extinction in Ireland in the late 18th Century, but there are increasing calls from ecologists to bring them back, potentially alongside another large predator, the lynx.
The benefits, they argue, range from controlling deer numbers and so protecting forests, to reducing road accidents.
However, the idea of reintroducing large predators is, not surprisingly, unpopular with Ireland's farmers.
Sheep farmers in particular fear attacks on their flocks and the impact on rural communities.
If there's one key reason for the calls to bring back the predators it's the ever expanded deer population in Ireland.
Overgrazing by them has led to damage to forests as well as crops.
Earlier this year, the chair of the Wicklow Deer Management Partnership said there could be more than 100,000 of the animals in that county alone.
Last year, 55,000 deer were culled in Ireland.
Ecologist Padraic Fogarty says that Ireland had pressing targets to meet for climate and biodiversity.
"Among those is restoring elements of our natural ecosystem particularly forests, peatlands and so on," he says.
"You just can’t have natural ecosystems that work without big predators.
"So if we want to re-establish big areas of forest that’s not going to be possible if we’re going to have deer numbers that are totally out of control or we don’t have the balance in those forests so that they can re-generate and perpetuate themselves over the long-term."
Mr McLoughlin adds that culling deer is not working.
"The first year that they culled deer in Ireland they killed 5,000 deer, last year they killed 50,000," he says.
"Every year, it’s cull, cull, cull and the numbers are still increasing."
He says by chasing their prey, wolves ensure they catch "the sick, the diseased, the old and the frail" and create a healthy deer population.
"The diseased ones that they’re taking out of the population are diseases that we really fear, like Lyme disease that affects thousands of people in Ireland," he says.
"They will also take out TB, which farmers dread.
"Crop framers have their crops destroyed by overpopulation of deer – the wolves will actually help the crop farmers, the tillage farmers."
Mr McLoughlin also cites a US study that suggested a 23% in reduction in road accidents involving deer in places with a wolf population.
"Wolves create a landscape of fear that keeps deer moving, it keeps deer away from the roads, it keeps deer up in the highlands where we want them, not down in our fields or in our gardens," he says.
"Despite intensive farming and urban sprawl, all it took for these animals to recover in mainland Europe was for people to stop killing them."
He says the public would have nothing to fear from the prospect of lynx reintroductions.
"There is not a single record of a human attack, let alone mortality from a wild Eurasian lynx anywhere in the world," he says.
(Against)
John Joe Fitzgerald is a sheep farmer from County Kerry and member of the Irish Natura and Hill Farmers Association.
"We have the domestic dogs in this country, they’re killing anything between 300 and 500, maybe 600 animals a year," he says.
"We can’t control the domestic dogs we have, how are we going to control a wild animal?
"I can’t see any way that they could reintroduce these animals, it wouldn’t be fair on the rural communities, it wouldn’t be fair on farmers and even small towns."
Mr Fitzgerald says across Europe where wolves have returned, thousands of sheep are being killed by them every year.
"Are we going to live in fear now that our animals are going to be slaughtered?" he says.
"The vast tracts of land are not in this country to reintroduce wolves, even if they’re going to be controlled.
"The only known predator to the wolf in Ireland is a gun.
"It’s not nice to reintroduce wolves and then we as farmers or rural communities have to start shooting them – it makes no sense."
(Meeting both halfway)
Padraic Fogarty said an important part of any reintroduction projects would be to pay farmers and local communities.
"We’re not talking about compensation, because that kind of implies damage, but if we start talking about the rewards communities could get from having large predators in their areas then I think the attitude might be different and we might have a different conversation that wouldn't be so vexed," he says.
Josh Twining agrees with this approach.
"Mitigation programmes in countries where people share their landscapes with large carnivores vary substantially, but increasing in popularity is the use of conservation performance payments," he says.
"I think for lynx reintroduction to ever gain any real traction, it needs to be led in collaboration with those who would be most affected, the sheep farmers, the game keepers, the custodians of the land."
Killian McLaughlin says that there is a "need to start educating people first of all and educating them that they [wolves] don’t kill people and they actually benefit us as well".
He adds: "There’s lots of ways of protecting livestock and our neighbours on the continent have gotten very good at protecting them."
Padraic Fogarty says that technically, these reintroductions would be feasible and that the species themselves could survive and adapt - "but it’s living alongside humans that is the problem".
Mr McLoughlin says it wouldn't take many wolves to balance the ecosystem.
"Top predators never overpopulate because if they do their food source disappears and they disappear," he says.
"We could initially start off with one pack and study them, but we would need a bit of genetic diversity, so you would probably need several pairs."
He adds: "It would really be about giving them the basics that they need to survive and then just leaving them well enough alone and letting nature take its course, because nature survived without us for millions and millions of years."

They just released the first 8 Spix's macaws back to their native range in Brazil after 22 years of them being gone from the wild, if you want to look into it!
Thanks so much for sending this in and giving be an excuse to gush about it!
Honestly I think the heart of this conservation story can be summed up by the very first line of the article:
"The Spix’s little blue macaw — extinct in the wild for 22 years — now flies free again in its natural habitat in Brazil, thanks to decades of research and effort by hundreds of scientists, conservation biologists, veterinarians, aviculturists and indigenous peoples."
So many people from so many different backgrounds cared enough to invest their time, money, and knowledge--often with no or very little financial compensation--to bring these birds home. Many whose names and contributions we will never know.
Eight birds were released earlier in June and 12 more are set to be released in December. This is only the beginning of the reintroduction phase of a captive breeding and reintroduction plan that has been in the making for decades. Parrots are challenging animals to reintroduce to the wild because they are so intelligent and social, but conservationists have learned a lot from both failed and successful parrot reintroductions in the past. I'm wishing all the luck in the world to those first eight birds--they have been given the best shot possible at making it in the wild.
This is one of those conservation stories that makes it all worth it. After 22 years, there will finally be little blue parrots in the Brazilian forest again.
Tumblr media
(For those who are wondering, yes, this is what the movie Rio was based on. Rio brought an immense amount of attention and support to the Spix's macaw reintroduction efforts)

reintroduction
hey, I used to post during my last 3 years of high school, but gave it up after my high school diploma. I started my undergrad since then and am currently in lack of some accountability, so I thought I might start this up again.
about me:
my name is gwen
I study math with a minor in econ in germany
after my undergrad, I plan on doing my masters in financial math
In my free time I love to read, draw and do weight training
I love coffee, cold weather, cats, lana and anything in pale pink
I am trying to learn norwegian (at uni) and keep working on my french (at home).
I think that's it, this is just in case anyone, who started following me a while back, is wondering what is going on...
have a nice day!

*Disc Scratch*
Alright, let's start again, shall we?
Last time I visited this blog, I was 22 years old. It's been 2 years now, and I think it's about time to reintroduce myself, hmm?
My name is Denisse, and I am a fan artist. For the last two years, here's my new interests:
• I discovered my interest in Greek Mythology. A bit overdue because most of my peers had this fascination in Greek Myth when we we're in high school, and I just shrugged it off like it was some nerdy sht. Turns out I'd be down to study it too in my mid-20s.
• Along with my interest in Greek Myth, I also fell in love with medias that are related to the myths, like Lore Olympus, Hooked on Chthonics, Gods' School: The Olympian Gods, and EPIC: The Musical. (Side note: I already lost interest in reading LO. It's been long overdue and the story is going nowhere.)
• Surprisingly, I also fell in love with anime, specifically Jujutsu Kaisen. I am DOWN BAD for Geto (not really) and Choso is my kin (how do you use that word? Kin? What I really mean is that I heavily relate to Choso).
• JoanFK? I've lost interest. CH S2 ruined them, and I have moved on from them.
• I also have gotten over my Trese and Disney interests since... The fandom is awfully quiet. I miss Trese though. I'm still interested to collect all 8 books since they already released the 8th volume.
I'll be posting some of my favorite works for the last two years here on a daily basis until we're all in sync with my IG page. And I hope you'll be there to support me.
See y'all soon 🫶🏼

Writblr Intro (Round 2)
Hey, everyone! Figured it was time to update my intro.
Call me Hendo, she/her, early twenties. I write fantasy, science-fiction, and sometimes horror, all with an emphasis on characterization over plot. In my longer manuscripts, there are always dragons, a casually queer cast, and at least one explosion.
I'm happy to do beta swaps under 15k, or honestly even longer depending on what my work schedule is that week. Said work schedule varies between "I'm basically on paid vacation for the next month" to "oh shit oh shit oh shit" without much warning, so, uh, yeah.
Tag and ask games are always welcome. If you ever just want to pop by and chat, maybe to say hi, maybe to work out a sticky plot thread, maybe to talk characters or editing, I'm here for it!
My WIPs
Let me know if you'd like to be added to the taglist for anything.
Reverberate | new-adult | complete, 124k | researching agents

WIP intro | tag: attenuate/reverberate
Prince for Hire | new-adult | draft 3, 110k | doing a paper edit
