Bearded dragon substrate, humidity, and diet.

Inspired by @kaijutegu's recent post, let’s talk about calcium sand.

So, calcium sand, and substrate in general, has been attributed to impaction in bearded dragons (and other reptiles, but for this post, we’re just focusing on dragons.) However, while some substrates are more natural choices than others, and as such are more digestible, substrate itself is typically not the root cause of impaction. Improper husbandry such as dehydration, improper lighting, diet and supplementation all negatively impact the digestive system as well as the body in general, and the problems only compact when these factors are stacked together.

Firstly, lets look at a bearded dragons natural habitat. This video courtesy of the veterinarian Jonathon Howard, known online as the Beardie Vet, shows the texture of the substrate that wild dragons live on. The sand is loose on top but packed underneath. The grain size is about 96% fine sand.

Next, lets look at this map.

This map courtesy of Claire Jaworski overlays wild bearded dragon sightings from iNaturalist over a soil composition map of Australia. Note how many of the sightings are found in Calsisol zones. Calsisol (also known as calcarosol) zones are characterized by containing 15% or more calcium carbonate. We know that bearded dragons engage in geophagy, or intentionally eating substrate. This is likely a natural behavior that they would perform in the wild to fulfill their biological need for calcium. We provide calcium as a supplement so that they do not perform this behavior in captivity (however this is not the only vitamin we should be providing!!!)

Next we should consider humidity, as there is not much standing water in their natural habitat, as well as diet, which they also obtain water from.

Contrary to popular belief, the natural habitat of bearded dragons has a very wide range of humidity, both throughout the day and throughout the year. When they are found basking, the humidity typically ranges between 10-30%. However, the morning after rain can be around 60%.

According to these maps, which measured the humidity of Australia over the course of 30 years, many dragons would be found in areas that range between 50-70% humidity in the morning and 20-40% at 3 in the afternoon.

It is also important to note that dragons are frequently found in burrows when not out and about. In these burrows, the humidity can be higher than the surrounding air.

As far as diet, this entire post is just a fantastic resource, again, courtesy of the Beardie Vet. In the wild, adult female dragons would be ingesting 48% plant matter in their diet, with males ingesting 68%. As far as moisture content, “Most plants/herbs are around 85% water – herbage 80% water, flowers observed eating >90% water; Insects are about 65% water – Termites 60% water, crickets 67% water.”

Bearded dragons, while they do not spend a lot of time drinking, are dependent on both the natural humidity cycle and their diet to stay hydrated. It is not natural to maintain a humidity of 30% or lower all year round, and compounded with poor diet and lack of access to water, can lead to dehydration, which in turn disrupts the digestive system’s ability to do its job.

So let's bring it back. Bearded dragons are naturally found on substrate with calcium in it. If you look at Zoomed or Fluker’s calcium supplement, for example, you will see that they are calcium carbonate. If you look at the ingredients for T-Rex, RepTerra or Komodo’s calcium sand, all are made with the exact same calcium carbonate.

So what’s the problem? The problem is, in the absence of poor husbandry, the ratio. Remember that Calsisol is 15% or more calcium carbonate. Well, most bags of calcium sand are 100% calcium carbonate. They should not be used straight, instead mixed together with other safe substrates such as children's play sand, excavator clay, and pesticide and fertilizer-free topsoil to create a natural and safe substrate mixture. The proper substrate will not only allow them to create burrows like they would in the wild, it will allow females a safe place to lay eggs (which they can do even without the presence of a male), help retain heat, and keep humidity at normal levels, as well as provide natural enrichment.

hi! it’s only nine am so not much has happened today so i’m gonna say the past twenty-four hours-ish 

three good things from the past twenty-four hours!: 

1. i called some of my best friends for the first time in awhile & it was really refreshing and truly the best cure for icky mental health. they’re all so funny and loving and it’s genuinely always a good time.

2. i played with my beardie & cats for a little bit this morning. not at the same time because cat saliva is toxic for beardies! i played with rex, washed my hands, then played with warlork & gave raven snuggles.

3. i started my premium savings account for moving in with the boyfriend next year and just deposited my first lil’ bit yesterday so!! we’re getting somewhere!!

three good things i’m looking forward to!:

1. one of the friends mentioned above has his birthday this week so i’m gna get a lil cake! exciting! 

2. idk, tomorrow is 4/20 so i’m getting snacks for that because that’s the type of person i am, rip. <3 

3. i have my eye glasses appointment next week which means soon i will be able to see once more.

Sappy, Crappy and Clean-shaven

I've had a busy day going to therapy and getting things done after postponing them for too long, and I'm therefore writing my GMM commentary a little later than usual. And, I had to listen to the new Ear Biscuit before logging in, just in case of spoilers of any kind. Since the Biscuits are currently a heavier in theme, I'll try to stay on a lighter and shorter side with this post. We'll see how that goes!

The last time I went to a McDonald's as a paying customer was around 1995. After that, I ordered myself a McMurder t-shirt, and it was very much off-brand for me to go there - besides, they didn't have any veggie options, until quite recently. We also don't have KFC or Wendy's here, and although Burger King is advertising their vegan whopper on every street corner at the moment, I haven't really felt a compelling need to try it. From this perspective, I can't really say anything about the fast food items Rhett and Link consumed today.

With the rate the guys are eating everything put in front of their mouths, they are going to be stuffed before this game is over. Rhett's appetite never fails to amaze me. I wonder if he's ever accidentally bit his own fingers? But synchronized eating is my favourite sport:

I wish Rhett wasn't just biting into his breakfast sandwich when Stevie said they should decide which sausage is better on their own time. He responds with a snort, but it's really muffled by the sausage in his mouth (think before you write moment here, but let's move on).

This is not an easy game. I'm a bit of an pickle conoisseur, but sliced inside a burger, I would not pay any attention to that part. I'd probably know if it's missing, but that's it. Also, what is the McDonald's fancy lettuce? And why is this sideview of Rhett biying into his chicken burger so aesthetically pleasing?

Okay, I don't know if there is any actual educated guessing knvolved in this game, but it appears like Rhett is winning, despite Link really doing a deep analysis on the dipping sauces. I would not be able to just lick a french fry (I realized I've never used the singular form, but fries...fry, right?) without eating it. I also can't look this sophisticated eating fast food, even if I really tried. I love how Link acknowledges they are divas - the two boys from a small town, eating fries like it was caviar.

I can't remember ever getting a Happy meal with a toy at McDonald's as a kid, but for what I remember, the toys were not that cool. I know I'm supposed to be a grown-up now, but I love those dinosaurs. I'm not so sure about the dinocentipede Link created, though. And actually, why weren't the dknosaurs made to scale? I know T-Rexes had small brains and all that, but that is not anatomically correct.

It's amazing how low quality some of the toys are. I'd be really bummed if my 7 dwarfs were twice the size of Snow white, and a Furby without the talking part is really just an ugly doll. And really, that game with the rings and hands thing is lame even for a "free" toy.

My absolute favourite thing about GMMore was Rhett and Link trying to remember the names of the seven dwarfs. Scrappy, Dopey, Oldie, Grumpy, Happy, Musician, Loopey, Sappy, Leader, Beardy, Clean-shaven, Crappy, Nappy...but I agree, Bashful is an odd choice. I want Link's version of the dwarfs be the next remake of the story.

TW: DEATH

Hey guys..

I uhh... Have some bad news.. So.. yesterday Rex was showing signs of illness. I had a feeling that something was wrong, so I told my boss at the place I got him from/work at. He said just to take care of him and he wished rex a well recovery.

Unfortunately... Today... He was still showing signs of being sick.. I gave him water.. food.. comfort.. even took him out of his tank to spend time with him.

And that... is sadly when he passed away. I gave him the best time before he did. He will be greatly missed... But just remember that he will always be in our hearts.

Love you, my little pancake... Rest easy...

4. What dream do you remember most vividly?

I actually have a few that I can still remember pretty vividly even years later. Maybe the craziest one was I was on a plane with my family on my mom’s side except I was searching for this little girl who I took to be younger me and my aunt had a cocker spaniel that apparently was me too. It was weird! I was just running around this plane looking for people.

17. The best name to give to a lizard?

I really don’t know if I’m the best person to ask this, the last lizard I named is a leopard gecko named Kiwi, my son named the other two Slider and Big Mouth, my beardies (bearded dragons) were Spike, Cordillia and Drusilla. But the best names any of our lizards had has got to be the iguanas named Fran and Earl (Dinosaurs reference I’m old lol). We are a bit partial to the crazy names in my house so I guess the weirder the better but I know my son wants to name a future lizard T Rex.
