In my previous class, Honors 1210: Polis, Republic, and Empire, the fall of the Roman Empire began in the West. The West was distinguished to have weaker systems than the East, which had a defensible frontier and well-fit emperors. Corruption within both the West and East occurred due to the poor government, economic, and social systems which flourished with the growing population. Additionally discussed in my current class, the fall of the Roman Empire endured social changes, such as the development of many distinct languages, dialects, and cultures thriving within Rome. I am glad I was able to learn and look back to the fall semester when we discovered the extensive history of the fall of the Roman Empire. This refresh of information also makes me wonder how we can relate this historical data to current topics within society.
The History of the Kings of Britain was quite an interesting piece. Beginning the reading with little to no prior knowledge, I intended this book to be an informational guide within the deep history of Britain. Nevertheless, the History of the Kings of Britain thoroughly explains the journey of Brutus, the Trojans, the King of Greece, and other major occurrences thereafter. Subsequent to the overview of Britain, Chapter 3 introduces one of the most noteworthy characters, Brutus. It was prophesied that when Brutus is born he would kill his parents and after banishment in various countries he would meet the “highest pitch of glory”. Surprisingly, the prophet becomes reality and his journey begins with the killing of his mother during birth and his father with an arrow, unintentionally. Although the Brutus' introduction was shocking, one of the most intriguing parts was near the end in which Locrin, Brutus’ son, falls in love with Estrildis. After marrying Corineaus’s daughter, Guendoloena, it was heartfelt yet saddening to see him still visit Estrildis. Therefore, I think it was justified (to an extent) that after Locrin’s divorce, Guendoloena killed Estrildis and their daughter. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot of this piece because of the romantic quarrels and commitment to power.
So far I have only completed a couple of chapters within Sunjata but it is a unique piece of work. Learning the new terms in the book was difficult, however, the themes within the book help to clear my misunderstanding. I was first introduced to Maghan Konfara who was Sunjata’s desperate father. Maghan Konfara's backstory foretells the difficulty and challenges that he faces while in need of a son. Praying to God, asking his moriw, and marrying the many, many, many women, he had no luck producing a prophesied son. Although poly-relationship ideals are not my type, it provided me with a better understanding of the deep culture. However, I also wonder about the perspective of these other women from a white, black, mixed, slave, and other backgrounds after entering this man's life (sounds traumatizing). At one point in his journey, he meets Manjan Berete and his younger sister, Sansun Berete, who he wanted to marry no matter the circumstances. He offers riches, popularity, and other values to Manjan Berete, even willing to adopt a new religion. It was shocking to see the extent this man will go just to bear a son. I am excited to continue reading the rest of Maghan Konfara’s journey and see the beginning of Sunjata’s life.
