Refusing to Forget "The Reasons Why I Shipped Toi Kuji x Kazuki Yasaka" Part 1
Source: from my Twitter thread. I am rewriting again to celebrate Toikazu's Day on October 1st.
1. Both of them have brother complexes in their family even though in different ways. Then their problems lead them to impact their own morality and lifestyle. Even they want to use Dish of Hope for their each own brother. Here
Tumblr media
2. Both Kazuki and Toi have their own beautiful mom who looks the same as them, especially in their hair and eye color respectively. Here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Their eyes zoom which reflects some leak scenes (My favorite part of them of course is their eyes and the zoom of the eyes). Here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Their merchs sometimes being juxtaposed (just like ReoMabu did). Here
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Usually the 1st and 2nd protags' official colors are Blue and Red. Kazuki (Red), Toi (Blue) Same cases with other animes' protags. Banana Fish: Ash (Red), Eiji (Blue); Yuri!!! on Ice: (Blue), Victor (Red/Purple), turquoise (actual) here
Tumblr media
Explain: In the official merch, Victor's official color actually is turquoise, but since he has his Stammi Vicino's costumes are pink and purple, his color can be depicted as pink (or we can mention it red) and purple.
6. Speak of the devil, both of their official colors match with both their hair and eye color. Meanwhile, even though Enta's color is yellow and matches his hair color, not with his eyes which are green. Here
Tumblr media
7. Same pattern: One has a slightly hanging bangs style that parted a little bit of his left eye; the other has an asymmetrical parting on his hair, and some can cover one eye. All of them parted on the left eye, except Victor. Here
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. Of course many moments about them from all episodes (except ep 3). Update: even I like Ep. 7 since Kazuki is now smiling and calling Kuji 'Toi' which means he has become close to him. But the result is Enta's jealousness. Here
Source: https://www.tumblr.com/infizero/686998966516219904/heres-my-kazutoi-compilation-that-was-also (Unfortunately, this video didn't include their moments from episode 1)
9. they have different belt buckle types which can be depicted as their personality. Toi: frame-style buckle Kazuki: box-out buckle When they open/close their buckles, Toi's is more complicated than Kazuki's, just like their rep lives. Here
Tumblr media
11. In their childhood, both of them had pure cutesy round eyes and small gaps when they stared at something even though in different vibes. Seems parallel but opposite, isn't it? Here
Tumblr media
12. Both of them have the initiative to first clean their soccer field together twice (1st: Toi, 2nd: Kazuki) before they know that the actual culprit of ruining their spot is Enta who is the one who is always on that spot. Here
Tumblr media
13. Coincidentally both of them have upside-down lives that begin from 5 years old happiness to 10 years old sadness. Here
Tumblr media
14. They have slender and delicate necks, jawlines, napes, and collarbones which are always being exposed in every episode. Also, Toi's Adam Apple looks sexy. Kazuki still doesn't have it yet, huh? No wonder! Here
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
15. YEAY!!! Finally, the relationship between Kazuki's Miçanga and Toi has been the truth. Even they have their (side)forgotten 1st meeting. Do you remind them of some other couple in another anime?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
16. In fact, during the anime their left eyes have always been the focus of their scenes. I know why the left eye is special for being zoomed. Even Enta doesn't get that treatment yet because his eyes are being focused on both. Here
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Btw, bonus from Sara herself *even though not related to Toikazu hehe...*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
17. Kazuki Leak's OST and Toi Leak's have different basic chords but both of them are full instruments. If you listen their songs repeatedly (minus Enta's) you'll find that they have some synchronized beats and vibes even though different chords and instruments. Even their songs end with a fade-out chorus which gets quieter and quieter, unlike Enta Leak's song chorus which ends with some growing surprising strings (maybe). Here
18. Kazuki and Toi have the letter 'K' in front of their names (Kazuki and Kuji) and the letter 'i' as the last letter in their nicknames [Kazuk(i) and To(i)]. Are they only coincidences or there are the intended meanings behind these, guys? Here
19. The zodiacs Kazuki: Taurus Toi: Scorpio Believe or not, there are some fun important facts about their zodiacs and the compabilities between them. Here
Tumblr media
There is also the compatibility description between Taurus & Scorpio https://www.zodiacsign.com/compatibility/taurus-scorpio/
More compabilities about Taurus and Scorpio (are some of them very similar to Toi and Kazuki's connection). https://www.astrology.com/love/compatibility/taurus-scorpio.html
No wonder they're matched as a couple.
20. Did you realize that in that new official art, both Toi and Kazuki exchange their color themes throught candied-apple and kimono. Even those things colors matched with their eye colors sometimes. Here
Tumblr media
Now, let's continue to part 2

Animation Night 164: Yaoi, Yuri
The fashion on Tumblr lately has been to divide everything in the world into yaoi and yuri, hasn't it? Well, tonight we don't need to make any abstract stretches of the imagination: it's time for anime where boys kiss boys and girls kiss girls.
Tumblr media
So. Five minutes ago, before Tumblr deleted it, this post was off to a pretty good start! I was happily explaining about the differences of nuance between 少年愛 shōnen-ai, 耽美 tanbi, ジュネ june, やおい yaoi and ボーイズラブ bōizu rabu on the one hand, and on the other, why 薔薇 bara (rose) isn't a genre title but nevertheless the editor of 薔薇族 Barazoku ('rose tribe') magazine coined 百合 yuri as a distaff counterpart, the 'lily tribe', and that really caught on.
I was starting in on a brief sketch of some history, how Tokugawa Japan was super gay and had a defined set of social rules for gay relationships in the form of 男色 nanshoku, but this was squashed by the Meiji restoration, and thus gay manga became a subgenre cultivating its own specific otaku audience.
Tumblr media
So then I was gonna tell you about how the early shōjo manga focusing on gay relationships, taking the old term shōnen-ai [which originally referred to pederasty], were quite nerdy and literary, but the subgenre rapidly grew in the 70s and 80s, cultivating an otaku audience of its own - primarily women termed, somewhat disparagingly, 婦女子 fujoshi but this demographic breakdown is certainly not absolute and there is a term for male fans, which is 普段し fudanshi. We coulda gone into the whole world of doujinshi, of the massive convention comiket; I coulda cracked open Kimi Rito's History of Hentai Manga for some interesting tidbits about how certain images become encoded as symbols and then reused routinely in manga.
And you know, I might have talked about how this is distinct from manga aimed at gay readers in gay magazines (like the above mentioned 薔薇族 Barazoku) which might be termed ゲイ漫画 gei manga. Perhaps we might mention here the upcoming adaptation of gay manga meme sensation kuso miso technique:
youtube
I was maybe gonna talk a little about some of the older genre conventions of BL; the masc top or 攻め seme and the effeminate bottom or 浮け uke; maybe a little about how yaoi fandom got exported into anime fan culture in the West and the strange phenomenon of the 'yaoi paddle'.
Tumblr media
...well, it looks like I managed to skim over all that anyway. Spite works wonders for typing speed, it turns out. But believe me, that's really just surface level stuff. We're working on a followup to the legend of Animation Night 69, so we'll be able to get in a lot deeper in a few weeks~
Anyway, even today, BL and yuri works rarely get adapted into anime in a particularly high profile way. But 'rarely' is not never! In Animation Nights past, well: on Animation Night 69 we watched the delightful 風と木の詩 Kaze to Ki no Uta (The Song of Wind and Trees), an OVA adapting the seminal (ha ha) shōjo manga about a French twink at boarding school. That was the direction of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, known also for Venus Wars and definitely the subject of a future Animation Night, it was as moving and melodramatic as you could hope from 70s shōjo. Sayo Yamamoto (AN36) brought us the incredibly charming figure gay skating series Yuri on Ice; and then of course Kunihiko Ikuhara (AN155), bless his heart, made his always bold statements on yuri with Yurikuma Arashi ('Lesbian Bear Storm') and BL with Sarazanmai, which I will surely cover if we ever reach the point where we're like 'let's marathon a TV anime' again ;p
Tonight though? We'll be looking at a couple of relatively recent films on both sides of the fence.
Tumblr media
For the BL wing, we have the film 海辺のエトランゼ Umibe no Étranger, aka L'étranger de la Plage or Stranger by the Shore. Kanna Kii, the mangaka, had previously worked as an animator at Studio Hibari, a small anime studio that dates back to the late 70s and broadly seems to specialise in shōjo. Kii returned there to design characters and supervise the film, and evidently Hibari were very excited to adapt the work of their alumnus, because they absolutely spared no effort.
The story centres on orphaned highschooler Mio and his neighbour Shun, an aspiring gay novelist on a remote island in Okinawa. The pair grew close three years before the start of the story, but Mio had to leave Okinawa; we join him now as he returns to that same shore, still holding feelings for Shun.
I'll admit, I don't know a ton about this movie - but it comes highly recommended by kvin who described it as one of an 'oasis' of strong BL works released around 2020. And the clips I've seen - well, they're the gifs used in this post, really nicely drawn scenes of affection. So I'm pretty excited!
Tumblr media
Our yuri wing... well, there's a few good choices for yuri TV shows I could show you, but tonight it's late and we need something short and sweet, and that really narrows the field! What I have is あさがおと加瀬さん。Asagao to Kase-san [Kase-san and the Morning Glories], a one hour OVA adapting the manga 加瀬さん Kase-san by Hiromi Takashima. The OVA starts partway into the manga, when plant nerd Yui Yamada has already started dating her crush, the athletic Tomoka Kase. It follows the trials of the girls' relationship as they are coming towards the end of their time at school - relatively low-key, slice of life first relationship typea thing.
The animae was adapted by studio Zexcs under the direction of Takuya Satō, who you might remember as director of the first part of Armitage III [AN153]. Zexcs spun out of JC Staff at the end of the 90s, and they've been pretty busy since then - for me their most notable creation is Aku no Hana (The Flowers of Evil), a truly unique rotoscope anime with an incredibly engaging, tense story about teenagers and the imp of the perverse... which sadly never got the love it deserved! yes I'm still beating this drum!
Anyway, while I have not been able to find a ton of production information, I am told at least that Kase-san was a passion project for Satō - evidently a yuri fan given he also took on the adaptation of Otherside Picnic. It began first with five-minute web adaptation Kase-san and the Morning Glories in 2018 that's more of a musical montage of moments from the series, which was then able to be expanded the next year into an hour-long OVA...
youtube
A lot of romance stories focus on the characters getting together, so it's interesting that this one skips right over those chapters of the manga and gets going once the characters are already together, focusing more on the trials of an ongoing relationship between two goofy hormonal kids trying to figure out if this is just a class S thing or something that they want to last. A great deal of effort is put towards character animation, intimacy, the little flinches and reactions. You can read a little discussion about it here on ANN.
So! With apologies for the late start once more (T_T), it's time to begin! Animation Night will shortly be live at twitch.tv/canmom, and I hope you'll join me for a gay old time~

I watched the first Re:cycle of the Penguindrum movie!!!! Yes! It’s out now, although only in Japanese with no subs
This will contain spoilers
The movie opens with a shot of Tokyo and my first thought was how beautiful it looked. My second thought was - wait, that’s not drawn!!? Ikuhara got Tao Tajima, the person responsible for the first Sarazanmai trailer and ending working on the opening credits for this movie and it looks really good! It’s a pretty exciting sequence for containing new material, depicting a young Shouma and Kanba wandering around the Sunshine City Aquarium at night and then shifting over to them watching how Himari visits the Aquarium in the first episode of the tv anime. They don’t seem to remember who they are or why they’re there and are lured into an elevator leading to the same library where Himari met Sanetoshi in episode 9 by Princhupenguin; a new penguin character. The brothers actions match Himari’s as they meet Momoka, dressed in a Princess of the Crystal outfit at the library’s Hole in the Sky Annex. We get some really neat parallels (that I reblogged earlier today) between the tv and movie versions.
I loved how they introduce the retelling of the story in movie format by having Momoka remind the brothers of who they are by having them read their own story, since they can’t remember it themselves. Momoka’s introduction feels magical and mysterious and the boys are insanely cute so it’s a great start.
The movie continues as a speed-run trough the first 12 episodes, but with another live-action sequence and Momoka talking to young Shouma and Kanba halfway through the movie instead of the scenes with Himari and Sanetoshi from episode 9, as well as a few new scenes at the end. A lot of scenes get cut, naturally, and some have switched places to make the story flow better by focusing more on a single character at a time. A funny result from the more condensed story is seeing just how often poor Shouma gets drugged and passes out and collapses over his food or the Takakura’s have glass shatter and fall on them. There was always a lot going on, but it got spaced out between funny and more lighthearted moments, while this is more of a highlight reel of the worst parts, not just with accidents but all kinds of unhinged moments.
With more than half the material gone, I don’t think the movie works that well as someone's first introduction to Penguindrum since there’ll be too much context and characterization missing. In a way I don’t think this movie was necessary at all, since there’s so much the tv show did better, but the fact that it’s been 10 years and I get to be an active fan, waiting for new material to come out for my favourite anime is more than enough reason for me to support it regardless.
One notable difference is the music. I’ve spent the last few months curious at how much new music they’ve been producing for the movies and how they’d be able to fit it all in. I think they did a good job at adding them to the new scenes and replacing some for old ones. Since it’s by the same creators I don’t miss the old tracks and it’s simply exciting and fun to hear the new ones. I love the Triple H tracks in particular and can’t wait to hear their full versions. I’ve actually been so impatient I’ve gone and listened to the original ARG versions! I didn’t use to like them, but now I do :D
Besides the music my favourite thing in the movie is the live-action sequence in the middle of it. When I first watched Penguindrum all the way back in 2014 I didn’t realize or think about how almost all the locations are based on real-life locations. Some of those statues and playgrounds look so weird, it’s a shock to see how they actually exist in real life. Part of this is me weebing-out since I’ve gotten more familiar with Japan and I know they’re real now - I’ve seen some of them myself, part of this is me considering the importance of those real-life locations for a story that’s ultimately about a tragedy that took place there. Next time I visit Tokyo I’ll have to take my own photos of them as seen in this movie! In addition to this, the live-action sequence is accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack, it adds and mixes in character animations flawlessly and reminds me of the joy and excitement I felt when I first encountered it in the Sarazanmai trailer, so I had a good time watching it for multiple reasons.
My least favourite things about the movie is that we’re missing out on how powerful the repeated and similar yet different narrations by the different main characters at the start and end of episodes. The speeches are included, but it doesn’t hit the same way in the middle of a movie as it does as an introduction or ending. They’ve cut a lot of scenes with Himari, probably since they’re less essential to the story moving forward, but instead we don’t get to see as much of the strong sibling bonds, which is what drives both Shouma and Kanba, which in turn does drive the story forward. While the new scenes with Momoka and the brothers are cool, I’m also sad we don’t get to see much of Sanetoshi at all, as he’s one of my favourite characters. At least he got a cool entrance, even if that’s all he got.
I’m cautiously excited for the second movie. I’m scared Ikuhara might change the ending, and while I feel like he’d allow everyone to get a happier ending, any sort of change scares me, since I love Penguindrum so dearly for what it is already. I’m also worried there’ll be more focus on the romances that familiar love, because I prefer it the other way around. At least I can always watch it once and then go back to rewatching the tv anime, time and time again.

I finished Sasaki to Miyano. Shout-out to @electriccelery93 for urging me to continue watching when I was unsure whether to continue or not. The anime ended up addressing everything that bothered me so I’m really glad I watched it until the end!
My main concern was with how much time Miyano took to reply to Sasaki. At first it felt unnecessarily dragged out, but after getting more insight on Miyano’s thoughts I could appreciate how seriously he took Sasaki’s confession and how considerate he was of his feelings. Besides that, figuring out your sexuality can take a really long time and I think the way he went on about it was true to real life, which was nice to see. It’s weird how my initial concern ended up becoming a strength. The other issue I had was with Sasaki’s jealousy, but since he was conscious and apologetic over it, and Miyano responded well to it, I’m good.
The last episodes were cute! Besides SasaMiya being open about their feelings, I loved how supportive everyone was of their relationship.
I’m really glad we got a wholesome BL anime adaptation. There’s definitely an audience for it and I hope it’ll help improve the bad reputation BL has. It was a little too cute and too slow for my personal tastes, but a solid anime nevertheless.
