Pacific Rim is the best movie ever made for the same reason Sif is the best boss in Dark Souls. It's not bcs of quality or craftmanship or whatever it's bcs when I hear "giant robots fighting giant monsters with the power of love" and "huge wolf with a big fucking sword" I am overcome with the urge to scream "HELL FUCKING YEAH" at the top of my lungs before headbutting a wall so hard I leave a dent in the plaster.

Sif the Wolf should make you question what you're doing

Oh Sif, poor Sif.

As a character design, Sif is very much just a standard wolf, but bigger, and with a big sword in his mouth, but that's underselling his visuals, honestly, because not only is he beautiful to look at, his animation and the way he wields his master Artorias' greatsword is all patterned after how Artorias himself used it. He's a dog with a stick imitating what his human used to do.

Sif is determined to prevent anyone else from suffering the fate of his master, corrupted and broken by the Abyss, even if that means killing them, even if they are a friend. But the Abyss is where one of the Lord Souls hide, so the player MUST go through Sif to get there. The wolf limps pitiably in pain when his health gets low, but there is no way to spare him, no matter how heartbreaking it is. Unlike the inhuman monstrosities that otherwise block the player's path, the empathy that Sif inspires is a moment for the player to stop and think... hey, am I doing the right thing here? I just killed someone's dog. It's easy to feel like a fantasy hero when you're killing monsters, it's a lot harder when the monster might be you.
