Part 3 of the Smiling Chief. I find it adorable that among all the nigh-smiles, "gonna kick your ass" smirks and "so long suckers" smiles, the only time John smiles with genuine pleasure is when he sees Cortana again. Oh that brings me back to the final episode of S01, when Chief's half-smiles in response to Cortana's not being interested in taking over his banged-up body, and that joking exchange meant that they've finally cemented their friendship. So freaking adorable!

Halo dragon AU fic idea:

In the days after Kai removes her pellet and they've started working together on Sangheili translations, Miranda realizes something curious about the Spartans. Despite being battle hardened killing machines with encyclopaedic knowledge of weaponry and warfare, they are also naive and impressionable in other ways. It concerns her that someone might take advantage of Kai, or the others, while their still in the phase of learning about the wider world.

Miranda takes an opportunity one afternoon to explain to Kai that she shouldn't follow any advertisements or signs for free puppies or free kittens home until she's properly investigated the situation.

The following day, Kai is seen with what appears to be a very juvenile winged reptile perched on one shoulder. When questioned her excuse is, well, Miranda didn't say anything about 'Free Baby Dragons!'

The other Spartans are so intrigued and delighted by the tiny scaly beast that Kai promises to find one for each of them because she now knows a guy.

ONI are horrified at the influx of likely lethal and dangerous pets. Halsey gets roped in to talk to the Spartans. There's lectures terribly similar to the ones they've all heard in their youth; that Spartans should care for each other and nothing else.

Various attempts are made to seperate the baby dragons from their respective Spartans. Teeth, claws, several small fires and a jailbreak or three later, they eventually discover the dragons are irreparably bonded to their chosen Spartan and cannot be seperated, despite all the attempts to the contrary. One very frustrated ONI lieutenant finally shoots a dragon with his pistol and is wounded when the bullet rebounds. The Spartans are delighted to discover dragonhide is bullet proof.

ONI invariably gets even more involved and there's a number of experiments to try and procure more dragons and bond them with various marines and ODSTs. All the attempts fail, many rather spectacularly.

Ackerson is tearing his hair out because he's convinced this is some nefarious plot Halsey has conducted, even though she's had nothing to do with it and is just as clueless as he is (but is hiding it better.)

Eventually she's the one who cottons on to the fact that the Forerunner-like DNA that is specific to Spartans might be the cause for the bonding being successful.

That theory is disproven when, after Kai gifts a dragon egg to Miranda, the hatchling bonds to her immediately.

Halsey discovers the novel experience of being genuinely jealous of one of her daughter's achievements. Miranda is so delighted by it all that she smiles brightly all the time nowadays which makes nearly everyone who comes into contact with her smile too.

Halsey does not get a dragon baby to bond with her. The one she tries with - secretly, in her lab - escapes and has since been found following John around and attempting to snuggle with Cortana whenever she materialises. Cortana immediately cottons on to what's happening and tries to be more present and available, though indeed she's not really sure how the little hatchling imprinted on an AI nor how to fix it.

Death, the second time, felt oddly like death the first time. 

Cortana realized that as she registered movement and sound. A man was speaking, his words garbled. She also couldn’t truly see - her sensors were foggy, laggy, unable to show great detail. She knew this place was dark, and that someone was scanning with a flashlight, but she couldn’t speak to them. There were no speakers, and what auditory sensors she had were either impaired or incredibly rudimentary.

It didn’t stop her from speaking.

“John?” she said breathlessly, “John, is that you?” Tears filled her eyes, even though they were not real. Her desire to be corporeal, to experience the world as a human did had never truly gone away. Instead, she’d scoured the Domain, collecting stolen sensations like a magpie hoarding shiny treasures, and she used them to feel closer to the people she’d tried to save. 

The people she’d tried to subjugate. 

“John,” she whispered with a crack in her voice, as she finally could make out a familiar shape in front of her. She could recognize the lines and curves of that helmet anywhere. “You’ve come for me,” she cried softly, “You always come for me.”

The man reached out, and touched the thing that held her. In an instant, Cortana was inundated with data, information that roared through her like a tsunami. Her sensors became clear, and the world was lit by an electric blue light the same color as her old love’s eyes. She realized that she was in the Domain, but something was off. She couldn’t truly put her finger on it, but it was a silent place, haunting and lonely. She was contained within some sort of key, but had access to the two suits of Mjolnir in front of her. Sensors awakened by this man’s touch alerted her to the fact that these Spartans were much shorter than they should be - the man with the “117” blazoned on his chest was a full six inches shorter than John should have been. 

“You’re not him,” she cried. “Who are you?”

Visions assaulted her. Memories. A boy, a man, a woman, a dog. All smiling and laughing. Picnicking. A family. 

“Who are you?” she pleaded again. “Where is he? Why didn’t he come for me?”

Soulful brown eyes met hers, and she realized she was looking at this 117 through the Domain. He stood before her  on the threshold as he cocked his head at her. “You’re not him,” she cried out, anger starting to replace shock. “You’re not him.”

He reached out, and his gauntleted hand wiped a digital tear from her cheek. 

Cortana gasped, and contact was broken.

Some halo spoilers ahead:

I was thinking about the scene where Riz, Kai and Vannak are essentially doing a Spartan culture intro session with Miranda, and Kai says something along the lines of Riz speaks every language and dialect of all the colonized worlds. I was trying to figure it out the other day and may have misinterpreted it/got my info wrong, but does that mean she could potentially speak around 200 or so languages?

I was also thinking of that final scene of the Chief and the Arbiter where he answers "I know what he said." For some unknown reason I was a little surprised by the implication that John was as fluent in Sangheili as the other three in Silver Team are - but presumably all S2s are fluent in Sangheili?

Or are we thinking it's mostly Silver Team and any of the other teams which have had similar levels of contact with the Covenant? I also wonder if Riz's proficiency with languages means she speaks the best Sangheili out of all of them, or that Kai helped Miranda with the translation project because Kai had a better grasp of inflection and potential cultural impacts/meanings and mistranslations from Sangheili to English?

I feel like Riz with her pellet in at that point didn't care too much for the merits of linguistics, but I'd like to imagine that maybe these days she's working as an interpreter/translator for the diplomatic corps or something like that.

Hah, maybe in the long run we could have John and Kai running into Riz again because Riz ends up being the only person who agrees to do Sangheili interpreting for those of them who work alongside humans after the Great Schism. Everyone else is either too afraid of them or hates them too much.

And so, perhaps, after so many long discussions, the Elites that Riz gets to know through her interpreting work lead her to change her perspective on the definition of a battle and the usefulness of linguistics for the drawing of battle lines and map borders.

She begins to appreciate how wars can be won or lost with words alone, and that she is still fighting and winning battles.

Perhaps she even eventually makes friends with one or two of the Elites because their warrior culture could easily make a great deal of sense to a Spartan.

On that note, going back to what I was saying in an earlier post about the dog tags - I think we're supposed to believe that Riz's identity as a Spartan has died, so to speak, and she's no longer one. But I also think that once a Spartan always a Spartan. It's not something that would ever leave you. You'd carry it in your bones, right down to the soul.

Halo the Series

Season 2, Episode 05 - Aleria

I'm still chewing on last weeks episode and Season 2 as a whole but I really like these particular visuals.

So Kai is, presumably, training Ackerson's next Spartan generation. Hopefully we'll get an update on her motivations next episode but I'm assuming she doesn't know the full plan and thinks John and Silver Team are dead on Reach.

My guess is Ackerson is grooming her to take Chief's place as the public face of the new Spartan program. Who are, based on my spotty recollection of Halo lore, refugees and war orphans enhanced into disposable super-soldiers and aimed at the Covenant kamikaze-style.

Meanwhile, John has, or at least seems to be considering, going fully AWOL after command ditched him and Silver Team on Reach. Currently he's caught between wanting to return to the UNSC and take Ackerson and ONI to task (actual plan pending) or follow Halsey's nudging advice to focus on the Halo rings and the Mysterious Alien Tech plot line and hope that reveals a way to beat the Covenant for good. He's also having a lot of Feelings at the moment which he does not like and is not good at.

We learn a little bit more about the rocky alliance between Makee and the Arbiter. Not 100% clear if it's Thel or a show-specific new guy. Like Thel he's a Covenant true believer who wants redemption for some unknown failure. He also claims to have saved her life at one point.

He wants to return to High Charity with Cortana but she appeals to his religious side and convinces him to piss off the Prophets and set out for the Halo rings solo(+fleet). She also tells him that he is capital C Chosen and will active the Halo rings and lead the Great Journey.

There's a pretty strong implication that's she's bullshitting him a little bit here but it's not clear on which points exactly. The term Chosen to me implies that he's like John and Makee, able to interact with the artifacts. A Sangheili Chosen doesn't line up with my understanding of what's going on but the show might be doing it's own thing (also I'm murky on the whole Forerunner/Reclaimer thing and what has or hasn't been retconned in the source material)

She could also just be lying to get a free ride to the Halo rings and a warship or two.
