“Jett,” you half-laugh, half-whine, drawing your hand back from him, “Go kiss Remy if you want attention that much, I’m sure he’d be happy to oblige.”

Oooof, the last half year or so since my big move have been b a d so this is like an exercise in what still compels me 😂

1. First and foremost is my cat Moxie, better known as Moo. I've had her for 6 years, since the day she was born, and we are Very Attached. She is my babyyyyy 💕

2. Animal Crossing! I'm eagerly awaiting New Horizons but in the meantime there's something v comforting about New Leaf.

3. Travel! Last year I went to Japan three times!!!!! In one year! And it was amazing. I took my first solo trip and proved to myself that I'm far more capable than I tend to think. I regret not doing it sooner, not seeing more countries before leaving Korea. I want to take a trip to Canada with my friend next year and I want to plan BIGGER for a trip to Iceland - and a return to Korea and Japan trip. 💕

4. Art makes me pretty happy, I'll say. I went from subpar skills, thinking myself "untalented" and, admittedly I did things kind of backward, starting with watercolors before realizing I didn't possess the drawing skills to create what I wanted 😂 I bought myself some sketchbooks and learned how to do gestures and have tried to make a habit of drawing frequently (but I didn't all last week). I have a long way to go but I'm ENJOYING it again and don't feel so frustrated about my inabilities anymore. (Funny enough, art is not the first time I decided to teach myself something overwhelming and difficult; I've been self learning Korean too 😂) I follow a TON of art Instagram and twitter accounts and it just makes me happy to see people produce these lovely pieces of work and I hope one day I will, too!

5. Finally, I wanna say my trash shrine makes me happy. 😂😂😂 I first started listening to kpop in 2011 and my first love forever love was B1A4 lmao and I remember buying my first album in 2012. At that time my money was tight and I couldn't always afford to buy things as they released. The things I bought were precious and I saved for them. But then came a time I could more easily afford them and THEN I spent 2 years in Korea and idk it's v materialistic but also something about the accumulation if things you want and love is NICE. I'm staying with my inlaws at the time and all my belongings are in storage, but I managed to set up a tiny trash shrine with the things I acquired since and no lie, it had 200% improved my miserable spirits. 😂

Anyway, sorry for the rambling but it's early and Moo woke me wasaay too early and I'm just waiting til coffee is ready and hella rambling cos I am nothing if not loquacious and happy to talk about joyous things! Thanks for asking me! 💕

Characters. I often get an urge to just make characters, no context no story nothing. That is... kind of how From the Roof of my Mouth started if I’m being completely honest

4. Do you have writing habits or rituals?

Eh, not rituals. Habits... I have a habit of starting scenes, forgetting them, and coming back months later to a surprise five thousand words of some nonsense I wrote while half asleep, but is worth salvaging... does that count?

6. Favorite character you ever created.

Nakoa and Ryan. Dallas is important to me, too, but by far it is Nakoa and Ryan.

20. Post a snippet of a WIP you’re working on.

Nakoa heaves a sigh when he shuts the passenger door behind him. Settles into the car and says, “You need to fucking clean in here.”

“Half the mess is yours.” But his tone is flat. He’s tired. Tired of fighting with Nakoa on whether what he does is good for him. Tired of trying to convince himself that Nakoa is going to change. “Look, Nakoa…”

“No, I get it. Fuck, man, I get it, I just…” He hesitates. “You don’t know the half of it.”

“You could—”

“And I’m not in a place to tell you.” Nakoa exhales. His hands are shaking in his lap, and Ryan wants nothing more than to reach out for him, hold him until the world beneath their feet is stable again. But then, maybe it never was. Maybe Ryan’s been kidding himself all these years, building a foundation on a world rocking itself to pieces.

53. What does writing mean to you?

Oh I dunno. From a really obvious point of view, storytelling :p but it’s the only medium that I have ever created art in that has stuck with me, despite desperate interest in music, in painting, in drawing, in a number of everything else. So for me it’s a lot of... how I work out stress. So when I say ‘I feel like crap because I can’t create’, it’s not because my self-worth is based on the sum of what I produce, but because the act of creating in itself is stress relief. Can’t relieve stress, won’t feel good.

54. Any writing advice you want to share?

Absolutely everything has been done before, so focusing solely on originality isn’t going to get you anywhere. Build your world how you want to build it, and the rest will fall into place. It’s okay to abandon works. It’s okay to pick them back up. It’s okay to write complete self-indulgent “garbage” if it makes you happy. Your work likely gets less response than it deserves, and not getting a response does not mean that no one likes it. All writing advice is subjective. There aren’t “rules”, there are guidelines, and you can break any number of them that you desire.
